one thing that’s been kinda bewildering to watch over the last few years is the slow and steady income of black people to Kazakhstan. and it’s like. why HERE? like. we always had a very ethnically diverse population, kazakhs, russians, chinese, koreans, germans etc etc but it’s all very explainable with history. and our universities have some kind of agreement with India, so that explains the influx young Indians and Pakistanis to cities. but like. before 2015 i think the only black people in Kazakhstan were kids of mixed marriages where one parent was African and studied in university in USSR and businessmen here on short work trips. but like today i saw a black security guard at pull and bear. and last week there was a new barista in the coffee shop close to my office. and i’m obviously not saying it in like an angry/racist way im more like. why Kazakhstan? literally what do we have here that made u wanna move HERE?
#literally if i wasn’t born here i would wanna like maybe visit just for the sights but MOVING here??? why#there’s a pretty short list of places this would be an improvement over and that’s not counting the fact that both russian and kazakh#are very difficult languages to learn#and i’m self aware in knowing people don’t fucking know about Kazakhstan. like how do u even find out and decide to move here#ig the students are like offered these by their schools/unis but other than that i’m so so lost#laila.txt

can i make a post about being irritated by antimaskers as a disabled person without annoying people trying to condescendingly explain accommodations for my disability to me! btw!
#like how poor is your reading comprehension that you don't understand that what i'm mad about is antimaskers' BAD FAITH invocation of#a disability that i have#like with these customer freaks i am making good faith attempts to accommodate them and they are rejecting those attempts and#refusing to work with me to identify and enact an accommodation#and instead just double down and harangue me for wearing a mask and keep insisting i take it off#which like. does not make me feel like these are good faith attempts to request accommodation#and are more likely antimasker customers trying to badger me into compromising my safety with like#a weaponized invocation of disability that if i'm being honest feels very flippant about the actual difficult lived reality of disabilty#so to be honest it feels VERY annoying to be condescended to by people on here lack reading comprehension and think that i#simply do not know enough about accommodations!#also to the person who brought up sign language in the replies it's actually a know language education and rights problem that#many Deaf/HOH don't know ASL or their contextual sign language and may not have access to opportunities to learn/practice/use it#so tbh i'm sure that person meant well but it did make me feel the exact same strangled rage#as when white people speak a bit of mandarin are like 'oh teehee i guess that makes me a better asian than you' like fuck OFF#at least no one has pulled a full how dare you say we piss on the poor yet but can people actually read things somewhat or at all#and not try to tumblrsplain hearing disabilities to me!!!!!!!#i'm soooooooo irate when i should be having pizza movie night with my beautiful girlfriend i think i'm gonna turn off reblogs on that post#the horrible temptation to reply really rudely then block#personal nonsense#eta: also to be clear the sign language issue is that even if i hadn't studied asl (i have)#it wouldn't actually be a silver bullet for communicating with people who rely on lip reading#so like......that just comes off very ignorant to act like i'm too stupid to think of that#or like it's a simple solution that people with hearing disabilities are just forgetting about

Shadow is aplatonic: an argument.
"Friends? I'm only temporarily working with you to achieve a goal. Don't get the wrong idea."
from Puyo Puyo Quest's 25th Anniversary event
@apl-swag-bracket
What is aplatonicism?
Here is a quick definition to catch you up.
The aplatonic spectrum, otherwise known as the aplatonic umbrella, is a group of platonic orientations that fall under the umbrella term of aplatonic. Those on the aplatonic spectrum may lack platonic attraction or feel it so little that they relate more to aplatonic experiences. The common link between those on the aplatonic spectrum is that they do not feel the "standard" amount of platonic attraction or they don't feel it in the "standard" way, that alloplatonic individuals do.
Here is some more reading you can do on the topic.
Resources about aplatonicism are scarce and anyway, this is meant to focus on character analysis first and foremost, so forgive me if I cut this section short. Anyway, I believe I have given enough context, so let's get into the meat of this post.
Is Shadow aplatonic?
As stated outright in the Sonic Ultimate Character Guide, Shadow is a loner who relies on himself first and foremost.
from Sonic Ultimate Character Guide (2016)
He is extremely individualistic and doesn't compromise for the sake of others. He prefers to act alone rather than as a team, believing the latter to be futile, and will even choose violence over cooperation to get his way.
from "Team Sonic Racing Racers!" Interview (2019), IDW Sonic the Hedgehog (issue #09), Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) and Sonic Rivals 2 (2007) respectively
If he teams up with others with cooperation in mind, it's always in the interest of a higher purpose. He'll actively ditch crowds and avoid gatherings once the action is over.
from IDW Sonic the Hedgehog (issue #11 and #31 respectively)
Most of his interactions with the rest of the cast follow this pattern, however there is some nuance to be considered when looking at his dynamic with a select few characters.
Rouge and E123 Omega are two characters Shadow has often been partnered with. Although the word "allies" would be more appropriate to describe their relationship, they're easily the ones Shadow is closest to out of everyone else. In the case of Omega, Shadow even displays bouts of camaraderie, likely due to the fact they share a similar mindset.
from Sonic Heroes (2003)
from Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (2008)
from "Team Sonic Racing Racers!" Interview (2019)
Another notable dynamic that stands out is that between Shadow and Sonic. Shadow's attitude towards him could be much the same as with everyone else if it weren't for their rivalry. Although Shadow is always focused on his goals above all else, Sonic's presence brings out a competitive side that distracts him and pushes him to act recklessly.
from "Team Sonic Racing Racers!" Interview (2019)
from Team Sonic Racing (2019)
Shadow doesn't see Sonic as his friend, but considers him an important part of his life despite himself.
and lastly,
from Sonic Channel's Shadow character bio
Conclusion
Shadow doesn't feel the need for companionship and doesn't seek to bond with others if he doesn't have an ulterior motive. He's a loner and a misanthropic, and would rather work alone to achieve his goals in the most efficient way. Because of his standoffish personality, the few close/intense relationships he has are with people who are "like" him in some way, given the impression of an unconventional connection in a very tangible and grounded manner, and not so much driven by feelings of affection or love. Hence why I think Shadow is aplatonic or is on the aplatonic spectrum... I rest my case.
(I would have liked to give more examples, but the 10 image limit makes this very difficult haha)
Here's where you can read the translated version of the TSR Interview (which I referenced a few times) in its entirety.
Here is Shadow's official character bio.
#this was very difficult to do bc of the image limit forcing me to cram everything together#but i hope the alt text is readable#anyways i want to spread apl shadow.... i want us to learn bc i care#shadow the hedgehog#shadow#sth#sonic the hedgehog#blingee.txt#also don't be fooled by the language i use#not speaking from a place of authority im just sharing my vision bahhh#aplatonic#aplatonicism#i would have also liked to talk about maria but once again the image limit would have made it impossible... maybe another time

Is there a place or specific post where I can start learning sannena'iši?
Unfortunately the only place is in all of my documentation. I've never intended it to be learned, at least not until it is finished to my standards, which considering how I think about it and work on it will be never. In my fantasy where I am motivated and hard working I would write a fantasy novel set in the world of the people, and I've always conceived of it as told from an explorer from another continent's perspective, so the reader learns of the world along side the narrator. And they would learn the language beside them too. So, the ideal would be a book that slowly replaces words as you learn them until at the end the narrator's journal is entirely in the new language by the end.
#conlang#constructed language#totally unrealistic I know#I do appreciate the interest but I dont want to teach#by which I guess I mean I down want to make a bunch of posts about how the language works particularly#that's just lots of work#and considering how difficult and long I took to do that last translation I cannot imagine other people learning too#if you mean the script it is very simple really

Hi, I was curious, have you learned or plan to learn any sign languages? Fluent ASL user here!
Hi! Interesting question!
I know some simple signs in the Finnish sign language and some ASL as well but have never tried learning either "seriously". I've also learned the basics of the Korean sign language because I know Korean and the signs are (in my opinion) very intuitive compared to Finnish signs.
I haven't really been in a position where I'd be around many hard-of-hearing or deaf people but I feel like I should learn the Finnish sign language anyway. Who knows, maybe someday I'll need it!
#finnish#langblr#langblog#suomen kieli#finnish language#sign language#I can kinda sign “I am hearing” in all of these but not much else#also my hand-and-eye coordination sucks (autism) so learning is difficult#I am very much a spoken/written languages person when it comes to learning and linguistics#which SUCKS

I know I've talked about the issues with indigenous languages and their inaccessibility for people from their cultures and how easily outsiders learning those languages can become disrespectful and even colonialist
but if Duolingo started offering Anishinaabemowin courses (made by actual Anishinaabe speakers and educators who are WELL COMPENSATED and TREATED FAIRLY), I would be on that shit in a fucking heartbeat.
#i know that there are courses online but#1) i'm poor#2) a lot of free ones are restricted to enrolled tribal members#and 3) i'm a flavor of brainweird that makes learning languages very difficult and not at all intuitive for me

Portuguese and Spanish are really the best languages. Not too beautiful like french but also not too weird like Italian.
#italian is also quite beautiful but idk its a bit odd#also Portuguese is just very easy in terms of writing and pronunciation#the grammar is a bit more difficult to learn if it's not your first language#but we come up with so many funny words lol at least in Brazilian Portuguese

I have to write a relatively long German paper, and man its just so difficult for me. The pro side is that I can pick any topic I want, so of course I picked Charles VI. But I've literally not written any German in months, and I'm almost 100% sure our prof doesn't actually read them. I should just write and submit boy king fic....
#i wish it was in English#bcs i would be very happy about it#but i have lost so much capacity for any German writing#bcs he sucks so much as a prof and has dropped the ball on actual language learning imo#how am i supposed to suddenly write a 7-8 pg paper after youve spent all our class time just lecturing at us#and giving us no real opportunity to really learn or test our skills#i shall.. probably just cheat.#LIKE i want to learn german so badly#but what the fuck is the point of even trying when i know im not going to get actual feedback on my writing#why should i even try at that point. put that much effort in and know that he doesnt really care at all#it just sucks so much bcs i genuinely love and am so fascinated w the topic#but the idea that id put so much work into translating it only for him not to read it really kills me#again. just submit boy king fic and see if he notices sjfkgllblb#but do you know what i mean? like im sure ill write a good version in english that i think is actual good content#but translating it is such a lost cause bcs all the effort is reallt for nothing#like atp im jusy interested in the history more than making an effort w the language#ugh i wish i wasnt this way but yknow lack of stimulation anf feedback really kills my enjoyment and interest#like see i can convince myself that thr eng version of teh paper is my typical personal research#<- i mean im making a fucking family tree for funsies so this isnt that far off#but the translation part is so difficult bcs my german has been eroding a bit SOB SOB#lol anyways i say this bcs i was plotting a boy king fic in my head as i was goong to bed#and was like oh i shoulf write it out tmr! and then remembered I HAVE AN ESSAY UGH#well yeah. suffering. we'll see how i feel abt i write the original copy and if i have the capacity to germanify it#i just feel so guilty about it. cheating. I dont want to and it feels so low effort and terrible#but why would i force myself thru all that for a guy who barely reads it#catie.rambling.txt

sooo . . . i did my first interview round with one company this morning, and i felt like it went really well. what i wasn't expecting was the recruiter sending me a request to schedule my next five rounds fifteen minutes after that.
#;; i'm also still sick 😭 BUT I REALLY FELT LIKE I POPPED OFF DESPITE IT#;; APPARENTLY I DIDN'T KNOW I POPPED OFF THAT HARD????#;; ***THE NEXT FIVE?????*** it's with a big company so i'm like 😳#;; SOOO these interviews often have a component that is live coding...and for this particular test there wasn't any way for me to#;; test my code so i had to be *confident* that what i was doing would actually yield the correct results. also they want to hear your#;; thought process and it's very collaborative because you can ask questions and ask for help#;; AND I TOLD MY INTERVIEWER THAT IF HE WANTED TO SEE ME DO SOMETHING QUICKLY AND EFFICIENTLY...I'D LIKE TO SWITCH LANGUAGES FOR THE Q#;; AND HE WAS IMPRESSED THAT I ASKED AND THEN HE WAS MORE IMPRESSED THAT I DID IT FAST. HE WAS LIKE 'i'm quiet because i have no notes-#this is flawless'. I WAS LIKE AYOOOOOOO!!!!!!!#;; LIKE I WASNT TRYING TO PLAY WITH OUR TIME AND I WASN'T TRYING TO BE CLUMSY IN MY IMPLEMENTATION#;; THEN HE SAID THAT HE'S NEVER SEEN ANYONE ANSWER THE QUESTIONS IN THE LANGUAGE I CHOSE AND I SHOULD FEEL PROUD OF MYSELF#;; BECAUSE IT'S A DIFFICULT CODING LANGUAGE TO LEARN!!!! I WAS LIKE 'AW SHUCKS'#♕░░ queen of the summer isles ( LUXX SPEAKING )#;; tbd.

In my special self-indulgent headcanon version of speech gifts, telepathy is a mind gift, but the equivalently difficult Speech gift is speaking in concepts
#so instead of using words you use straight concepts#this is a difficult skill not just because of its technical challenge but because there’s a proverbial language barrier#The way you think about something the way you understand certain ideas is different than other people’s#So communicating in concepts becomes a very intimate act in which you must intrinsically learn to#wrap your head around someone else’s worldview and respond in kind#The way I imagine it when you get to this level of study Speech classes begin to resemble anthropology#for example#what is a woman? What is a house? Are these concepts immutable?#How do those ideas translate across the bounds of culture? How do you specifically conceptualize these things?#One of the final assessments in Speech is choosing a word and defending how/why you conceptualize it the way you do.#You do this in a conversation with a professor that is held entirely in the language of concepts#It’s not just an assessment of eloquence but an assessment of whether you’ve#thought about how and in what ways you want to participate in society#anyways#yeah#I can and will extrapolate about dem sense higher ed and speech gifts and are so fun and malleable#celias journey#speech gifts#worldbuilding

Someone insisting we don't learn language intuitively unless homeschooled...Did...did your parents put in you in school at 18 months of age? Did a teacher go around a room of toddlers with a dictionary saying, "This is what 'mama' means"? Because if the answer to that is no--and it is definitely no--you learned language intuitively, like everyone else. The finer points you learn in school, and later on your own, but even as you're doing that, you're still picking up words and phrases just by talking to people and reading.
#I was perfectly polite in my response to her#but she clearly wants to have a superiority complex#“you must have been homeschooled by an illiterate”#wasn't homeschooled and in fact excelled in English and creative writing classes#and happen to come from a family with three English teachers and two university professors thank you very much#language is and has been a particular interest of mine#when I did manage to get hold of a dictionary and thesaurus after leaving my mother to live with my nana#(one of the aforementioned English teachers) I pored over those for hours#but I didn't learn every word there is to know#that would be impossible#I was also an avid reader#I have learned many words from the dictionary or actively looking them up#but I've also learned intuitively because that is the primary way we learn language#sometimes the words you learn intuitively end up not being to the accepted definition#that's just how it goes#when writing you try to catch yourself#particularly on proof-read#like there's a fucking reason it's much more difficult to acquire a new language after the age of 10 years#and it's not because we become less adept at reading a dictionary or thesaurus after that age#but hey if we want to make baseless assumptions I'll assume she was one of those kids in the gifted program#who never got over the fact it meant absolutely nothing

Adhd will be like “you’re not dyslexic, you just don’t read the whole word. Good luck with math you dumb fuck”
#emma posts#there is more to dyscalcula and having trouble remembering how to spell long words#but these sure aren’t helping#me. learning Norwegian. reading the sentences and or putting words together to make one ‘I’m so fucking good at l this’d’#okay. now spell the word for ‘difficult’#me crying on the floor because I know it. I can read and hear it. but the letters blend together in my mind#it’s bad enough trying to do this with English. which is my FIRST LANGUAGE#but then it’s like ‘spell complicated words you are learning in another language’ and i feel like smashing my head on the carpet#I can’t speak it for the life of me though. which is actually getting frustrating#without an actual person to explain how to pronounce the words I’m failing so badly#but the primary reason I’ve been learning since April is to read it anyway#and listening is good too. harder though#I’m going to be so fucked up when I start taking Swedish lessons#the word means the same thing and also sounds almost the same (to an English speaker)#BUT THEY SPELL IT VERY DIFFERENTLY!#and with whole new letters#I’m going to write the Norwegian spelling and fail#I will admit that my plan to learn Norwegian first has been working otherwise though#them using fewer unfamiliar characters and being slightly more similar to English really is making it easier to learn#than Swedish first would be. maybe I’m just biased because I’m doing decently at Norwegian#but now when I learn a Swedish word it feels easier because i have two Germanic languages to compare the words to#and one of those languages is even another Nordic language! I dread finding Icelandic lessons though. but it will probably be several years#before I even attempt that! I am doing this because I want to be able to read old family records and objects but learning about#the linguistics of the language family both are in has been super fun and made it actually easier to learn Norwegian!#Spanish is the other language I want to learn but I’ve been putting it off#because it’s more for day to day utility and I can’t fixate on it the same way. I’m terrible at concentrating on it#plus. I’ve already had four Spanish classes so I figure I’ll at least have something to start from! I think I even kept my highschool notes#it’s been really frustrating figuring out which ‘the’ to use. having everything be masculine or feminine has probably been my biggest issue#when making sentences in it. also having had teachers from totally different dialects has been hard in the past#Mexican Spanish can be very diffident from the South American one my highschool teacher taught
