#are there any other gender-neutral pronouns in spanish?

speaking french and spanish and having non-binary pronouns is a curse
and i'm not even talking about the fact that the whole language is gendered
i'm talking about the fact that "elle" in spanish (pronounced "eyé" (?) is a gender neutral contraction of el and ella
but "elle" in french is basically "she"
So saying that my pronouns are iel/they/elle confuses french speaking people when they read it because they think that my pronouns are basically french-they/they/she and it's annoying lmao
#language#non-binary#btw i'm pretty much a beginner in spanish since i'm learning on my own#all that to say that i use “elle” bc i've been told by spanish-speakers about it#i wanted to specify because i know there's a whole discussion about latinx (apparently not created by actual hispanic ppl) and latine#so i might be wrong but i think “elle” is pretty common in spanish for non-binary people?#are there any other gender-neutral pronouns in spanish?#in french “iel” is the most common and recently added to the dictionary#but i know some people use “ille” and sometimes simply neopronouns#french#french language#pronouns#queer#gender#gender identity#spanish language#latine

Gained in Translation
I speak four languages (at varying degrees of fluency) and do translation both for smooth and peaceable family reunions and for fun, with works of literature I enjoy. It's practically a truism at this point that meaning gets lost in translation; in fact, I'm currently reading an excellent book, Babel by R.F. Kuang, in which there is magic powered by the meaning lost in translation. But a topic I hardly ever hear anyone discuss is how meaning can be gained in translation.
Example 1: References
A type of meaning that can be gained in translation is that when you translate from language A to B, you can make references to other texts in language B that the person who wrote the original in language A wouldn't have been aware of. Here is an example from a translation I did of a Pablo Neruda poem:
Yo te recordaba con el alma apretada
de esa tristeza que tú me conoces.
I remembered you with my soul gripped
by the tragic ordeal of being known by you.
These lines in Spanish reminded me a lot of the meme based on the viral New York Times article about how you need to submit to the mortifying ordeal of being known in order to reap the rewards of being loved. So I decided to make a subtle reference to that quote in the way I phrased the English translation. This meaning, of course, doesn't exist in the original Spanish; I added it in.
Example 2: Meaningful Distinctions
Meaning is often gained in translation because the target language makes a distinction that the source language does not. The translator has to choose one side of that distinction, and so meaning is gained.
Here is an example from the Spanish localization of the Japanese RPG Fire Emblem: Three Houses. There are two unlockable scenes in which the character Hubert is given a gift as a romantic gesture. Now, I don't speak Japanese, but through reading the analyses and translations done by Japanese speakers, and by checking for consistency in the kanji, I can see that the same word for "gift" seems to be used throughout these scenes. However, in Spanish, there are multiple words for "gift" with rather different connotations, which becomes relevant in the localization.
In Spanish, there is no generic word for "gift" that applies in every situation. There is a distinction made between gifts that are personal, between people who care about each other, and gifts between people who are not close, such as charitable gifts and formal gifts given to a diplomat. The translators of the game had to choose which of these words to use in the Spanish, and they used the distinction to add some very interesting meaning to these romantic scenes.
In each scene, what happens is that Hubert notices the person has a gift and comments on it, thinking it's for somebody else. In these lines, in Spanish, Hubert uses the personal intimate word for gift. Then, when he finds out the gift is for him, and reacts very awkwardly, he switches to a formal word for gift, creating an emotional distance between himself and the romantic token. This is excellent characterization and adds a layer of meaning in translation.
Example 3: Meaningful Ambiguity
Sometimes, the opposite phenomenon occurs, where the target language does not make a distinction that the source language does, and that ambiguity or vagueness adds something to the translation.
I have a Finnish friend who has told me that fiction that plays with gender is often more meaningful for him in Finnish translation than in the source language, because Finnish does not have gendered third person pronouns. Where books like The Left Hand of Darkness or Ancillary Justice have to make a conscious decision about which gendered pronoun to use for characters that fall outside the Western gender binary (The Left Hand of Darkness uses "he" and Ancillary Justice uses "she"), the Finnish translations can just use the default neutral pronoun they use for everyone, and never have to resolve that ambiguity in any direction. My friend has told me that there are some books about non-gender-normative characters that he wishes he'd read in Finnish instead of English because the experience would have felt more authentic in some ways.
What It Means
The reason why I bring all of this up is that the concept of meaning lost in translation is tied to the idea of translation as an act of violence. Indeed, there is a saying in Italian, "Traduttore, traditore," which means "Translator, traitor." I agree that translation can definitely be an act of violence that destroys the intended meaning of a text and warps it to suit the needs of the speakers of the target language. But when we focus only on what is lost in translation, at the expense of what is gained in translation, then we deny that translation can be an act of liberation and power.
I was raised in a bicultural household speaking both English and Spanish, and when I translate between these languages, it makes me feel empowered and proud of my heritage. It feels insulting to me to claim that when I translate, I can only ever deplete the meaning. That is not true. Every translation requires a translator, and we are more than thieves and traitors. We are more, even, than archivists, trying to minimize loss and decay as much as possible. We are creatives and inventors who can add something beautiful and meaningful to the text via our translations.

Imagine:
Being frenemies with Javier Peña
Request: Yes or No
Making up for my absence with the king himself
Pronouns for Y/N: technically gender neutral although it was written with a male y/n in mind
~~~
Steve never fully understood what started the feud between you and his partner, Javier Peña. He'd been occupied on his first couple of days on the job, but he certainly hadn't missed the passive-aggressive remarks you tossed at Javier or how Javier would scowl whenever you entered his vicinity. He learned quickly that Javier had a way of getting under people's nerves and assumed he'd done or said something to you that set off the rivalry. But you weren't exactly a saint either. With an ever-persistent smug smirk and a sly way with words, Steve understood why Javier disliked you, although not to the extent he did. Nobody bothered explaining it to him either. Javier liked shrugging his shoulders whenever Steve asked and you would ignore his existence until you needed him for one reason or the other.
Sure, he should've been spending his time trying to bring down the Narcos terrorizing the country, but he needed a break every now and again. And office drama was exactly the type of distraction he needed to keep himself sane and remind himself he was still human. It was why, whenever he had spare time, he found himself watching the way you and Javier interacted in the office. Javier complained and groaned whenever you got involved in something, but then he'd spend the whole day attached to your hip with his ear hanging on every word that drifted past your lips. Steve chalked it up as Javier taking his job seriously while out on the field but then he noticed he'd do it in the office as well. Javier watched you speak, listening intently as if you were preaching to him. The more time he spent around you and his partner, the more the dots connected.
"And what about you, viejito?" Your typical smirk sat prettily on your face, a finger running around the rim of your cup. Javier rolled his eyes and brought the glass of whiskey to his lips, dark eyes piercing into yours. Steve could never fully read Javier whenever you were around. It was as if a totally different man took over him. He leaned back into his seat and folded his arms over his chest, resuming his job of observing.
"What about me?" Javier swiped his tongue over his top lip and set his cup back down on the table.
"You gonna spend the rest of your life chasing after 'informants'?" You tutted softly and shook your head. Steve knew what would come next. "I guess I can't blame you, Peña. If I couldn't keep a woman satisfied for more than a night, I'd stay single too." The blonde snickered quietly under his breath, covering the sound up with a cough when Javier glanced in his direction.
"It's a choice, (L/N)."
"Sure it is."
"You're single too, you know." Javier braced his arms against the table and leaned forward, gulping down the rest of his whiskey and setting the empty cup aside. You lifted your own cup and tilted it, pouring the remaining whiskey into Javier's glass. The movement was fluid, no split-second hesitation or any thought put into it. Steve wondered how many times you'd done it before. Surely, you'd gone out to a bar with other agents alongside Javier. But had you ever gone out with just him?
"How do you know I'm not seeing someone right now?" You shot back and raised a brow at him. Steve swore Javier's eyes narrowed for a moment, and from the way you grinned, you'd seen it too. You mimicked Javier's position and leaned forward as well, eyes darting between his dark honey-colored ones. "¿Te molesta? Que vas hacer si tengo novia o novio, Javi?"
Despite having been working at the agency for a while now, Steve remained rather clueless about Spanish. He spoke very little of it and mainly relied on Javier for translations. But he knew at least half of the words you'd said and translated them in his head to create a sentence that made sense in English. And boy was he glad he'd been paying attention. His gaze immediately turned to Javier, studying the way his jaw clenched briefly. His leg lightly bounced under the table and he looked away, looking over the others eating and drinking in the establishment.
"Why would I give a shit about that?" Javier's voice held an edge to it.
"You look like you give a shit."
"I just feel for whatever sorry soul ends up with you." His reply sounded less hardened and bitter, taking on a more playful tone that still had you rolling your eyes. Javier took his glass into his hand again and Steve shifted in his seat. Your attention jumped to the American and you regarded him with little care.
However, despite your indifference toward him, he enjoyed prodding Javier just as much as you did. "Is it that pretty girl you were talkin' to the other day? The tall brunette with the cheetah print dress, right? What was her name again? Maria? Mary?" There'd been no tall brunette with a cheetah print dress, but he didn't need Javier to know that. Especially from the way he frowned and leaned back in his seat. You stared at Steve, face unreadable, and for a moment he wondered if he'd crossed a line. Then, you grinned.
"Miranda." You 'corrected', looking back at Javier. His leg bounced a little faster. "She's from Medellín and came here for business."
"A hooker, then?"
"You sound relieved, Peña," Steve noted teasingly and Javier's head snapped in his direction, brows knitting and forming wrinkles between them. He scowled suddenly and stood up from the table, his chair loudly scraping against the tiled ground.
You laughed and stood as well, fishing your wallet out of your pocket and tossing some money down on the table before giddily following the sulking detective. Steve took one last swing of his whiskey and followed, tugging his jacket closer to his body when he stepped out into the cool night air. Javier offered him the keys to the car, lifting the cigarette between his fingers when Steve looked at him questioningly. You winked at Steve with that familiar smirk and Steve smiled, unlocking the car parked at the curb and getting inside. He felt it rumble to life beneath him and he subtly rolled down the window an inch to eavesdrop.
"Miranda no existe, pendejo." You giggled, tucking a cigarette between your lips and cupping your hands around the lighter when Javier flicked it on. The detective grunted at your words and stuffed the lighter back into the cigarette pack.
"You're a real asshole, you know that?" Javier muttered and exhaled a puff of smoke into the air, notably more relaxed than when he'd left. You inhaled and pulled the cigarette from your mouth, releasing the smoke and bumping your shoulder against his. Javier dipped his head but Steve caught sight of the small smile that appeared on his face.
"You said it was never going to get serious, and yet here you are." You purred softly and Javier looked back at you. "You're lucky. Eres lindo cuando te pones celoso."
"We'll see what you think after we drop Murphy off."
Oh, yeah. The dots had thoroughly connected.
hiiiii could you do Floyd and jade reacting to s/o calling them Mi amor or other pet names like that fem or gn reader and head cannons also hope your having an amazing day!
FLOYD & JADE x gn reader
『 floyd ,, jade ,, gender neutral reader 』
-> s/o that calls them mi/ma amour
— fluff ,, sfw ,, crack
— i aint too knowledgeable about spanish since im taking french 3 ,, but i think ma is the feminine form ,, but i just put it as ‘mi/ma’ so it can still be gender neutral somewhat (as much as i can do it possibly since im not sure if theres really any gender neutral terms in spanish ,, since there isnt any in french 😶) so its kinda just a pick n choose ig ? reader’s pronouns arent used or specified but its implied theyre gender neutral n stuff
- jade
| • the first time you call him 'mi/ma amour' is when you were about to part ways for the night ,, going to your respective dorms . least to say he wasn't surprised but definitely not disappointed . it was new but not unwelcome ,, more so encouraged
| • the second is when he whips out a nice dish for you ,, of course sneaking in a few of his well grown mushrooms that he's put his heart and soul into
| • the third time is when he calls you 'mi amour' ,, quite a surprise to you and also quite the turn around .
| • after a lovely date outside the college ,, a hike in the woods of one of the national parks on the island ,, followed up by a lunch at a somewhat expensive restaurant ,, jade spared no expense on you for the day
| • to end it off ,, he reciprocated your sudden petname for him ,, a sly smile planted amongst his lips as he kissed you goodnight after walking you to ramshackle
| • least to say ,, he definitely enjoys the new name you have for him
- floyd
| • he doesn't mind the new name ,, pretty neutral about it in general
| • the first time is when he happened to be swimming with you during spring break ,, the weather could easily fool you for it being summer
| • he had suggested going to the oceanside for the weekend ,, both of you free from school and any work needing done ,, or so he said (after all he would abandon all his schoolwork for any time spent with you)
| • and so you two took a trip to the oceanside ,, him in his mer form laying on his back with you laying against his chest ,, occasionally flicking water in your face just to see you grumble about it
| • when he threatened to let you fall off him into the ocean below ,, 'mi/ma amour' just happened to slip from your tongue ,, hands holding on tight to his shoulders as his own were grasping your waist
| • he immediately became intrigued at the new name ,, poking your sides to make you say it again
| • floyd enjoys hearing you say it but it should definitely be reserved for special occasions ,, like when he scares the piss outta you when you go searching for him around octavinelle's dorm
I did study Japanese for a few years, and I can confirm that in the panels you shared Koko did not refer to Senju with any pronouns, just her name, and did not use any other gendered words, so all the speech bubbles in those pages are perfectly gender neutral. Which, even if it probably isn't the case, would be just too funny to interpret as "i have no clue, so let's be safe here."
However it wouldn't have been too outrageous if Koko thought her a guy, since she has shown a certain tendency to present ambiguous or male. For instance, in the infamous toy Concorde scene, tiny Senju yells sometjing like "I wanna play too", and Takeomi immediately chastises her saying it's "unladylike". That's because she used a pronoun for *I* that is both a masculine word and one considered rude.
So, in summary: Koko used gwnder neutral language but Senju is probably referred to as a male more often than not.
P.S. in the Spanish version, the Concorde scene gets lost in translation and is rather sexist anyway, so the original meaning was dismissed and Takeomi's nagging was translated as something like: "stop yelling like a wild animal!"
Oh thanks!!! Ngl I put those on there thinking someone else may know. It is funny to imagine Koko using her name just to make sure he doesn't accidentally get anything wrong though. If he did get it wrong then I kinda feel like Takeomi would be more offended then Senju and if Senju did get annoyed I think it would be more over her assuming Koko said that because he thinks girls can't fight rather then her appearance.
#oh I didn't know that about the Spanish version either! The English one has a little explanation as to what's going on and that she used the#wrong word#tokyo revengers#tokrev#tokyo rev#tokyo revengers spoilers
Okay this took me three days bcus I spent Way too long thinking about it but! here's my guys in @t6fs' template!
The only bit of this that was left blank for non character reasons is the dreams- I avoid all the dream cards in game to avoid nightmares, so I don't really know the vibes oops. Oh, and the key items are distinctive things they carry regularly, excluding things they'd own at home. Otherwise, detail bits under the cut! I ended up with a lot of notes and wanted to ramble, it's really fuckin long <3
Silverstein
"His" pet is Pembroke's Half-Wild Mandrake (from bag a legend). They both agree that it is still hers, it's just hard to take care of in the middle of the city so it lives out with him. Otherwise, he keeps no pets.
Apathetic but also opinionated: On most things, he's very apathetic, simply agreeing with other people's decisions. On the other hand, though, he is strongly revolutionary and aiming for a lot of change... Not that he'd tell you that, not that you should know.
Dreams: It's canon that clay men can't dream :( No rights
Habitat: He likes being out and about, he spends most of his day out in the streets. He does a lot of "low skill" but high strength work, like moving services or construction.
Both hot/cold and coffee/tea are Neither for clay man reasons: Very high and cold temperatures cause him issues in different, equally annoying ways, and he can't eat/taste either, so no preference on food or drink.
Items: The gloves are clay stained, actually, and primarily on the inside. He started collecting first city coins for heart's desire and just has a habit of keeping some on him now. Horse head amulet... fear of death and uncertainty about the particulars of clay men :)
Flower, white rose: Did you know all the funky coloured roses (ie blue or rainbow) are made by dying white ones? :)c
Animal, saint bernard: Big but fairly gentle and lazy, would be a guard dog if asked but is mostly content to just sit
Element, rock slide: Change! Upheaval! Rocks :3
Pembroke:
The pet is her hunting dog, lovely lil thing <3 She doesn't keep many pets as she's a very busy person (and wouldn't want to put that on her poor housekeeper) but a good dog is always useful.
Rude-polite range is because she defaults to, and is usually, quite polite but often is also overcome with the need to be an absolute lil shit. Duality of man <3
Lodgings: Rooms above an ex-bookshop, now her tailoring shop!
Enemies: See: habit of being a chaotic lil shit. Apparently people don't like it when you think their party is too boring and try to spice it up smh
Items: A wedding ring with no match. A pocket watch to keep a tight schedule. A weapon of some sort, picked from a diverse collection. A travel sewing kit for rogue buttons and popped stitches. A hat pin, back up weapon :)
Flower, green dahlia: .......This one's mostly a pun off of Delia ngl
Animal, borzoi: Fancy and elegant looking, but still a hunting dog. Pretty but vicious~
Vincent:
The pet listed is a frost-moth but they have so. many. bugs. The phosphorescent scarabs are also pets. They have spiders. They keep any and every type of bug to either study or have as a pet. Please never visit their flat if you don't like bugs.
Gender: Bureaucratic misunderstanding. They filled out various forms wrong when they were first travelling to the neath, rolled with the neutral pronouns, realised they like it more than they probably should, and simply refused to think about that at all
Logic-emotion range is them trying to lead with logic but also having high anxiety
Lawful-chaotic and apathetic-opinionated are also anxiety, honestly. Though, for the latter, they are just quiet about their more out-there opinions, especially in the realm of politics. It's a culture thing kinda sorta, if I get into that here it'll add like 3 paragraphs at least.
Cultural identity: Catalan! Very proud of that! But won't default to that and will usually say they're Spanish. I can't get into that for the exact same reasons as the last point oops
Allies: This guy ☝ is depressed and isolating themself
Remember vs forget: When you're this far from home, your culture comes just from your own memories that you can't afford to lose. But also fuck wouldn't it be nice to simply forget the things causing you anxiety.
Items: Big round glasses to counter their shortsightedness. Bugs. Anti spider goggles that aren't prescription, both because they were originally lent and because they don't usually need to see very far with them on. Catholic rosary, worn under their shirt. Bugs. Surface currency, specifically Spanish pesetas, sent from their parents. Bugs. Bugs. More bugs.
Flower, forget me nots: Blue, anxiety coded, pretty <3
Animal, mantis: Awkward looking, vibes <3 Also, specifically hierodula papua bcus it's blue!
Heya! I come from that-kid-fromtheplayground's blog! They reblogged your post and I thought It was pretty neat!
Um, If it's not much trouble then could I maybe get headcanons for being Alejandro's (tdwt) sibiling and being as hot as him and driving all the boys crazy just like he does with the girls but reader liking and flirting the most with Cody? Idk if I explained myself well lol /cries
[please, if you could maybe do the reader also protecting Cody from Sierra by putting her on her place? That girl creeps me out and also terrifies Cody and he's my fav character so... 💀]
Oh dear anon. Of course. Though I hope using gender neutral terms is okay. It's just what I work better with.
Info:
Reader is the younger sibling to Alejandro, so they'll have the same genetics. (
Reader is implied to look slightly more feminine than their brothers.
Any Spanish used will come from Google translate...I'm sorry.
I've decided the team Reader is on will be The Amazons, better for Cody and Sierra interactions.
Relationships: Platonic!Reader x Alejandro, OneSidedTDWTboys x Reader, Implied!Cody x Reader, Sierra vs Reader
Pronouns: They/Them
Warnings: Swearing, Manipulation from Reader, obsessive behavior from Sierra, terribly translated Spanish, only Alejandro being able to understand Reader and vice versa, Chris McLean
The World Tour contestants thought Alejandro and Sierra were the last surprises. But that changed when the young Spanish boy helped someone else out of the bus. They weren't super tall, just about 5'6" or so. They also looked surprisingly similar to Alejandro.
They had the same brown skin and dark brown hair, not nearly as long as Alejandro's. When they got closer to the contestants it was then the others noticed the lighter green eyes.
"This," Alejandro spoke up and pulled the shorter teen closer "is my youngest sibling, -Y/N-."
"Hola¹." Their voice was soft, but just as alluring as their older brother's. "I hope we can become good friends, even while competing against each other." -Y/N- smiled at the others and gave a particularly long look to Cody.
That was the beginning of the end.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was an off day for filming. Slow and easy flying for the cast and crew. Team Amazon was in first class, enjoying the luxuries of winning. -Y/N- wasn't with their team, rather they were in economy. They claimed they wanted to see their brother but that went out the window fast.
The younger Burromuetro did talk to Alejandro for a bit. They quickly started talking to some of the other guys though. Especially since their brother was talking to the girls. They both had the same idea and plan going on, being siblings and all.
"So then what'd you do next, Tyler?" -Y/N- was sitting close by the (mediocre) high school athlete. The brunette teen flushed.
"Well then I pushed past some of the guys and-"
"Hey. Time for bed." An intern walked to the teens. "Chris's orders. -Y/N- head back to first class, please." The Spanish teen pouted for a moment but nodded and got up.
"I hope you'll finish the story later, Ty." -Y/N- leaned down and hugged the boy.
"Y-yeah, of course." The athletic boy agreed and hugged the other contestant back. This got a smile from the Spanish contestants.
When the lone Amazon walked back to first class they heard a happy shout of their name. Looking over they saw Cody. He was waving them over, happily but frantically. The teen happily bounded over.
-Y/N- quickly hugged their brother "Buenos noches, hermano²~". Alejandro hugged them back, also saying goodnight. "Buenos noches, tontos crédulos³~". They waved to the others, the boys waved back.
"Cody, mi hermosa florcita⁴." -Y/N- sat by the shorter Amazon member. Completely ignoring the very obvious glares coming from behind them somewhere. "Are you doing okay?"
"Uh I'll just say," Cody started off, looked to the side real quick and leaned into -Y/N- "being around you makes me feel safe." He finished off with a whisper. This caught the green eyed teen's attention.
"Well, Cody," -Y/N- pulled the boy as close to them as possible "I'll stay with you all night~" Cody's face got very very warm and very very red. Yeah he's had fans before, Total Drama and his boy band, but never has someone so pretty willingly doted on him....without it being Sierra and her creepy habits.
"Thank-" the boy's voice cracked and he cleared his throat. "Thank you, -Y/N-. I really appreciate it."
"Anything for mi hermosa florcita⁴~" Cody moved a bit closer to his teammate. From somewhere behind them Sierra nearly ripped into her pillow with how tight her grip was. She did end up ripping into it when the Spanish contestant ended up running their fingers through HER Cody's hair.
The late night hours seemed to fly by. Soon an intern started waking up the contestants. Breakfast was served and eaten, Cody was sticking by -Y/N-'s side. Sierra didn't do that great of a job hiding her anger.
When the Amazons finished eating -Y/N- went to economy class. Cody tried to convince them otherwise but that was pointless. The Spanish contestant made their way to the other teams. Gotta keep the guys thinking they had a chance.
Sierra immediately took the opening and nearly tackled Cody. The day before he was allowed to sit with Gwen and Courtney. Then -Y/N- came back and took up her rightful spot by Cody. The purple haired girl took the opening immediately.
The Burromuetro siblings were talking. It was quiet and in Spanish. Most of the others assumed it was about their family and home life. What they wanted to do if they won the money.
Around lunch -Y/N- went back to their team. What they were greeted with was quite the sight. Most of the girls were eating a 5 star lunch on one side. Sierra was being Sierra and that got to the young Spanish contestant.
"HEY!!" -Y/N- shouted and got everyone's attention. "ACOSADOR LOCO⁵!!" They stomped over to Sierra, who had Cody trapped in her arms. "What the hell do you think you're doing?"
"I'm just eating lunch with Cody-kins." Sierra frowned and waved a hand dismissively. "No need to get so worked up over it." The girl held onto her victim teammate tighter, Cody was getting more visibly scared. "Can't I talk with my fellow Amazon?"
"When that teammate is Cody?" The Burromuetro crossed their arms, clearly more irritated. "No. You have NO self control when it concerns Cody." -Y/N- gestured to their trapped crush teammate. "He's absolutely terrified right now!"
"Now you pleito esperando a suceder⁶," the Spanish Amazon grabbed Cody and with all their strength pulled him away from Sierra "I recommend you keep away from mi hermosa florcita⁴."
Unknown to the mostly girl team Chris had heard drama happening and being Chris he ordered the crew to start recording. And ho-boy did he get the drama he was looking for. Sierra tried grabbing Cody while -Y/N- tried to keep him away from the stalker.
”Listen here you maldito psicópata delirante⁷," the Spanish teen was glaring at the tall girl "if you don't stop your mierda espeluznante⁸ I swear on my bisabuela's⁹ grave," -Y/N- grabbed the front of Sierra's top and got as in her face as they could "if I EVER see you bothering Cody again I WILL ruin your life."
"You can say goodbye to ALL your blogs. All your online followers. Your ENTIRE internet existence will be whipped out." Sierra was struggling to get her shirt free and when -Y/N- finally let go the girl nearly fell backwards. "I'll make sure of it personally." Sierra just nodded, actually kind of scared and wanting to avoid the Spanish contestant.
The younger Burromuetro grabbed Cody's hand, being careful to not squeeze it too hard, walked to a couple of seats further away from everyone and sat down. They ordered some food for themself and their shaken up teammate. The taller of the two placed their head on the other's shoulder.
"Let me know if that perra psicópata¹⁰ is bothering you okay, mi hermosa florcita⁴."
"Alright." Cody spoke quietly and held -Y/N- hand gently. "Thank you." In that moment the Burromuetro promised to themself they'd protect the shorter contestant.

On racism in the QSMP fandom
The QSMP was a large, year-long event intent on uniting the world's assorted Minecraft communities. The idea was that people would share languages and cultures, and intended on helping everyone gain cultural awareness and set aside their own biases.
Because of this, the QSMP largely centered on the most beautiful and fun parts of each culture. Carnaval, Dia de los Muertos, French Independence Day, and the Fourth of July come to mind first.
However, cultures are not simply the existence of fun holidays, outfits, and foods.
It is the way people speak, behave, and think.
It is the reason why, in private text messages, even in English, I will use "Spanish" punctuation rules. It is why I make certain jokes, even if I know they won't work the same in English. It is why I dress the way I do, why I express interest the way I do, and scream the way I do.
Language affects culture, and as such I have my first point: Spanish-speakers and gender. I should preface this by saying that the way Spanish affected my perception of gender is different than others like me - because everything has a gender, in my mind, gender is largely irrelevant. What should it matter if a table is a girl, or a pencil is a boy, or a teacher is any specific gender? However, in many others, this leads to a stronger adherence to gender, because EVERYTHING has a gender. See: Vegetta. He, personally, does not understand the idea of someone who is not a girl or boy, and therefore struggles with the idea of calling someone that. For him, gender is firmly entrenched.
Now, if this personally affects people, then I do apologize. However, there is a strange habit of people looking down on Spanish speakers for "struggling to catch up". This is, in the nicest way, a xenocentric attitude. The idea that your culture is automatically "better" and "more civilized" than another is the outright definition of xenocentrism.
In the English language, there IS a gender-neutral pronoun ("they"), but in Spanish there is no such thing. You would default to male if you do not know the gender of the person you are talking about. The idea that someone could simply change their language - ESPECIALLY when there isn't yet a consensus on how to accommodate enby people, because ending things with the letter 'e' has not officially been deemed 'correct' by all Spanish queer people (source: I AM ONE) - because you want them to is unrealistic. You may be upset, but you must also be understanding.
Another, similar, example is one of ForeverPlayer. Please know that I am not defending him, I believe that an adult kissing a minor is wrong, even when it is lawful. However, many Brazilians have already noted that this was seen as NORMAL at the time, and that many people had been much worse.
And we cannot forget the reason that these allegations were brought up in the first place: racism and xenocentrism. The person who had brought the allegations to the public eye was not the victim, but a random person who had already attempted to cancel several other Brazilian streamers. Yes, they did a good thing in making people more aware of the streamer's behaviors, and for that I commend them, but it was not done with good intentions. People can defend themselves with "oh, I watch XYZ Latino streamer, I'm not racist" all they want, but have any of you truly contemplated your biases? Do you not hear how close you are to saying "I'm not racist, I have a black friend"?
White people only care about "understanding" cultures when it is appealing to them. When it is "aesthetic" and "fun", when the people they know are "entertaining".
People of color should not need to be entertaining to be seen as valid. They do not even need to be seen as good people to be seen as valid human beings with their own thoughts and emotions and rights.
The problem is that you wish to coopt the "beautiful" parts of our cultures, but you do not care about the "ugly" parts. You praise us for being "interesting", but you condemn everything that is not.
Your understanding of us is nothing more than fetishization. And THAT is the true problem with the QSMP fandom.

hello!
i was wondering how do you pronounce and flex the pronouns "ləi/lɜ/lə/-ə" in your bio?
Hi! Thanks for asking, it's probably a good time to leave this out there… These are my pronouns in Italian, so idk how familiar you are with them and if my explanation will make sense but here we go:
L simply makes the sound L, ə is taken straight from IPA (international phonetic alphabet) and is also called schwa if you wanna look it up, it sounds like the first letter in English "about", "again", "across" ect. (Tip: just open your mouth slightly without making any shape with it, keeping it relaxed, and then release air), and i is just an i and it slides from the previous letter, so its IPA transcription would be ['ləj]. You can listen to it on this website by inserting the text in brackets between the slashes: x
All the other forms share their spelling with their IPA transcription to a T. The sound ɜ in lɜ is called long schwa, it's the vowel from the English word "bird" (pronounced with a British accent, its IPA transcription is ['bɜːd]). Its technical name is "open-mid central unrounded vowel", so it's similar to a schwa but your mouth should be slightly more open.
As for inflection:
Ləi is the "subject"—or, more accurately, nominative pronoun, also used with the accusative case ("object"), and, if you put a preposition before it, with any other case, e.g. "di ləi" for genitive ("of them", "their"), "a ləi" for dative ("to them"), and "con ləi" for instrumental ("with them"), if you want to stress the pronoun (it's called a "stressed form").
Lɜ is the unstressed dative form ("I gave them a book [I gave a book to them]": "Lɜ ho dato un libro"), and lə is the unstressed accusative form ("I'll call them": "Lə chiamerò"). They're clitics, so they can also attach to the end of a verb ("Give them a book": "Dallɜ un libro", "Call them": "Chiamal").
For those who know Italian, basically lɜ is the gender-neutral equivalent of masculine "gli" and feminine "le", while lə is the equivalent of masc "lo" and fem "la".
Italian possessives and reflexives don't work like in English so there's no need to list them.
As for the -ə at the end, that's the "gendered ending", just like in Spanish and Portuguese it replaces feminine ending -a and masculine ending -o, so for example tío/tía in Spanish, tio/tia in Portuguese, zio/zia in Italian—which would become "ziə" in my case. It's again pronounced like the first letter of "again", "about" etc etc.
This also replaces the last letter in all gendered words, by attaching to the root of the word, even when they don't follow this simple -o/-a structure, so pairs like "autore (masc)/autrice (fem)" (author) become "autorə", or "professore/professoressa" (professor) become "professorə".
One thing that we don't usually list is the ending for plural words: instead of -i for plural masculine and -e for plural feminine, it's supposed to be -ɜ, so zii/zie (tíos/tías, tios/tias) becomes ziɜ.
For those who can read Italian and want to know more, check out the website italianoinclusivo.it!

Hi maia i just wanted to thank you for genderqueer i found it the other day in my library and translated into my language no less! There isn't a lot of progressive talk about trans issues in Poland and the translation of your book was the first book about nonbinary person in my language that i think i've ever seen. I never thought i would ever get to read it because the shipping prices are so high so i genuinely cried while i saw it on the shelf. I don't know how involved you are in translation process but it was such a well done job and the note the translators wrote at the beginning tought me more about nonbinary culture in my country than i've ever hoped i would get to know. Also I was wondering do you consult with translators what set of pronouns to use in other languages? I imagine it's a hard decision when the gender neutral pronouns don't have a direct counterpart. Sorry for rambling and thank you once again for this amazing book and for sharing your story <3
Thank you so much for this message! I am so glad you were able to find a Polish version! Polish and Czech were some of the very first foreign translations we sold, and I remember being very surprised, but very happy, because it was a few years ago when I was starting to hear about a rising wave of conservative politics in Poland. But a publisher took a chance on it and I'm very grateful <3
Yes, I generally consult on every single translation, for exactly the reason you pointed out: pronouns are different in every language! Some languages already have a widely used gender neutral pronoun set. Some languages have one that's new, but being developed by trans and nonbinary people today (like elle in Spanish). Some languages don't have any gendered pronouns to begin with! Because the English edition contains two different nonbinary pronoun sets (they/them/theirs and e/em/eir) we also have to decide how to distinguish between the two. What I always tell the translation team is: I would rather the translation be useful than faithful. I don't want to try and replicate the English. I want the book to demonstrate a pronoun set that could be practically used in the language it's being read in.
Generally, the publisher hires a professional translator and then often a second person who is trans or nonbinary to read over the translation and to write a forward, such as the Polish edition has. I believe the French edition has a forward as well. The only other language aside from English I can read halfway decently is Spanish, so I am always really glad to hear from someone who has read any of the other versions saying it was well done!
And for anyone else interested in Gender Queer in other languages, currently it has been released in Spanish, Polish, Czech, French, Italian, and Dutch with Norwegian, Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), German, Japanese, and Korean forthcoming.

What pronouns do nonbinary people use in Spanish?
any pronouns they want but lenguaje inclusivo does exist. If someone wants to use neutral pronouns in spanish, they can use elle or substitute the e in articles and adjectives. its becoming more popular, and lenguaje inclusivo isnt just about making language neutral, but also about subverting gender dynamics. my favorite professor during my study abroad in Barcelona always greeted us as "chicos, chichas, y chiques", and many other greetings he included both the feminine and neutral version of the word. It's about destroying the idea of only using the "male" version of words because grammatically they also include women (ex, "los cocineros" can mean all men or 1 man the rest women, while "las cocineras" means all women only). Idk, it's kinda cool and it was nice seeing it in practice while abroad, but yes, nonbinary folks can use any pronouns they want, but if they want neutral terms, we usually add the "e" or "x" ending to words. There are other versions I've seen around but I dont remember them.
#muertoresponds#that professor was so dilfy and hot#dude was like a 40 something crusty barcelonan man who looked like he was hungover every time he walked into class#but i had the fattest crush on him for his brains and dishelved look#he was so tall and he was like dad bod extreme#i was in love to say the least#anyway#he was really cool and awesome and super up to date on everything thank god#im thankful everyday i went to bcn and not cordoba#cuz i for sure would have been hate crimed there#but in bcn life was perfect ugh
