Okay last one I think…lovely stuff as always, I’m just juggling another brainrot right now, but I was itching to make some remarks. First off I’m glad midwesternvibes mentioned the text thing in the most recent update, because I was tickled to see that too! Probably the first time he had color since before their “spat” in the kitchen. As much as I know it’s still a roadblock in his recovery, I’m glad to see the voices coming back for Donnie. I kinda get this feeling they are hanging out with him until they know he’s going to be “okay”. And I have this little idea to myself, that when Donnie is able to start healing and processing his trauma, he stops hiding from them and is no longer afraid to see them. Of course that would be when they would start to slip away. (And that would be so rough for Donnie) Grief is kinda like that too. Sometimes you can be okay for a long time and you’ll have bouts where you still miss that person(s) even when you know you have accepted and moved on.

So I’m curious what is the situation that Donnie is on a watch. Is it just Draxum’s concern? Is it in case Donnie gets catatonic again? Is it in case he gets violent again? Is it to save his liver (those supersoldier genes only thing keeping it from failing)?

Also Draxum fixing Donnie’s sweater like a dad (only for Donnie to have his femme fatale shoulder thing as soon as the door is closed)

I’m a little surprised that this is the first time Kendra has seen Draxum do his mystic vine magic…or… he just hasn’t had too…or…all the mystic stuff happening lately has made Kendra more aware to it…or… but whatever the reason…appropriate reaction, lol

So something I have noticed that has me enticed is Donnie has been wearing his hand prosthesis more often.

Before the trauma induced episode, the only time we ever saw Donnie wearing it was when he was out or in “mission mode”. It makes sense, he needs to be able to save his ninpo for more than just temporary fingers. So why now… I was gonna suggest he is on edge, but I also remembered, as I was writing this, that you mentioned him having a slight disconnect to his ninpo…so yeah fingies is not a luxury he can afford right now. In any case…. Hmm…Donnnie….you know…if you didn’t shut your second dad outside…he mighta told ya that Kendra went out…ya know…? Also not sure if it’s just clueing us into Kendra still being sick or that trope of “if you sneeze three times it means someone is talking behind your back.” ? (I quote this one when I sneeze a lot, I’ll go “okay who’s trash talking me?!”)

I think I showed it a few times that despite Donnie constantly wanting said voices to stop, whenever they actually do, he feels uneasy. It’s quiet and he feels alone. Both want no risk of not being able to get to Dibble so keeping him out of the lab that he can lockdown is a must for them

Do you have any advice on how to begin drawing a cetacean? When I'm drawing terrestrial animals, I can break them down into simpler shapes pretty easily, but cetaceans are just Big Tubes and I'm completely stumped on how to start

(Disclaimer that my work is rather stylised, so I'm not looking for advice on photorealism! Just any advice you have in general. I admire your ability to understand and render these sausage-bodied beasts)

Hi! That's an interesting question. I have to admit I had to draw a couple of dolphins first to see how I actually deal with them when free-handing lol. So much of my work as of late is scientific illustration, where in many cases I can build upon my own older illustrations. The new pieces are always 100% new, but correcting a base - however poor - is easier than starting from scratch.

Before I go any further let me stress the eternal importance of references. I can draw a dolphin fine from memory but for it to be actually accurate I need references. I always use them. Especially when it comes to weird poses or angles, but even for illustrations I will reference 25-50 photographs. Use them, study them, find them. They are a resource not a cheat.

Also, years ago I actually started work on a whole series of dolphin drawing tutorials. Or rather, collections of notes and tips for different topics (anatomy, differences between males and females, colouration, variation). Looking at the files now I see I had actually written and drawn a frightening amount already. Perhaps I should try to finish them? Is that something people would be interested in? Anyway, it starts off with a word of encouragement, which I do want to share here:

Actual advice is below the cut:

ONTO METHODS - illustrations

I found that for me, my method depends on whether I'm making an illustration or a full scene painting. For illustrations - which are in flat side view - I actually embrace the sausage. I drew a dolphin for you and saved the steps of how I go about it.

And this is the first. I start with a sort of flat-bottomed airfoil shape, and then add fins and a beak in approximate locations.

Next is refining the appendages and giving a face. Shape and placement of appendages as well as eye and mouth line is all experience and/or reference work.

Then comes fixing what I messed up lol. I always make the head too big first try (would have been good for a baby dolphin though!). Using cutting/transforming/moving selections around I correct proportions to what feels correct to me (again, that part comes from having seen and drawn a lot of dolphins).

Add some markings and hooray we have a spinner dolphin! This is the part where I would seriously start consulting references to check all the details and proportions are in order. If you don't need (photo)realism you can skip that step and use refs further back in the process just to get the shape/idea/colour of the species you're trying to paint right.

MORE METHODS - for different poses

When it comes to dynamic poses, my workflow is completely different. I just start from the nose and build my dolphin from there. Because as said above, they do have anatomy. And I think the way the beak flows into the cheek, the eye bumps connect, then the curve of the throat, the attachment of the pectoral fin, the way the belly curved up towards the genital region, the slight bulge behind that, then the muscles of the peduncle which flow into the flukes - I think the relations between those separate parts are enough for me?

These are the little dolphins (and a porpoise) I sketched from memory. In all cases I started from the tip of the nose and built from there, with minimal or no adjustments/erasing along the way. It was very much outline work. Details on eyes, mouth, etc, would come later. The killer whale is a bit different and got way more detailed than the rest. With such a front view angle I do use some spherical shapes to break it down for the body and face.

Otherwise I've never really liked or used the method of breaking an animal down into shapes, it never felt logical or intuitive to me. My "method" (if you can call it that lol) just comes from having drawn a lot of dolphins. I don't know if it is necessarily helpful when you want to get a grasp of them when starting out. Regardless I do hope this answered your question somewhat and you could get something useful out of it!

Also, I realise now I mostly talked about "standard "dolphins - for whales/short-beaked smaller cetaceans/etc my process is mostly the same, except their heads just have different shapes.

i love boxing. i love boxing and i love combat sports. there are SOOO many things to talk about, i will not be able to get into all of it but i can give yall some combat sport basics!

SO. I will try to be succinct, but sorry in advance:

—not even touching on weapon arts types, there are three primary fighting styles of combat sports: STRIKING, GRAPPLING, and HYBRID

things like boxing (my wheelhouse) are striking combat! you can get a little locked up sometimes but you can’t actually intentionally grapple your opponent, and the ref will split you up to reset if it gets too tangled up.

things like wrestling and bjj (brazilian jiu jitsu) are grappling combat! you’re trying to pin your opponent or put them into submission via cinching and grappling, sometimes throws and knock downs, but there’s no striking allowed

things like aikido and combat jiu jitsu are hybrids! they use a combination of striking AND grappling techniques to varying degrees. MMA is the main hybrid combat sport, but i don’t think of it as a “style” on its own, by virtue of it being a combination of tons of other ones haha

—the next element is: what parts of your body you’re allowed to use and what parts of your opponent’s body you’re allowed to target. grappling sports are going to be a lot more full-body compatible, while striking styles can vary! punches only vs punches and kicks etc.

so, for example: boxing is limited to punches only and localized to above the waist, head on. whereas bjj is essentially full body to full body

—the last part is whether or not the combat allows groundwork. is this going to be fully upright (boxing) or can the fight continue if someone ends up on the ground (bjj).

—OK SO: MUAY THAI

it is a HYBRID combat sport, so it utilizes both striking and grappling. (it would probably be considered primarily a striking combat sport BUT it is technically a hybrid. most of the grappling comes in from catching your opponents strikes and utilizing that hold against them, as opposed to like, wrestling lol. you’re wearing boxing gloves so you can’t like, grasp anything with your hands, it’s more like arm locks and holds)

it is UPRIGHT, so both fighters will be standing the entire fight, and there is no groundwork or floor-based grappling

it uses MIXED STRIKING, punches as well as strikes with the feet, shins, and knees. lots of blocking is done with the knees and shins actually, which i find very cool

it can look a lot like boxing until the kicks come in to play! hand wraps and gloves look the same, but fighters will go into the ring shoeless and with ankle supports. professional muay thai fights prohibit shoes and shirts. sparring would include shin pads and sometimes head gear, depending on the setting

you CAN strike your opponent pretty much anywhere but the groin, knock your opponent down by getting them off balance (leg sweeps and throws), kick or push them away from you

you CANNOT pick your opponent up to grapple or throw them, grab their clothes or hair, headbutt them, or tackle them

if you’re curious about how it looks, I recommend searching “muay thai sparring” on youtube, it’s more casual than actual fights and you can usually see the fighters moves a little more clearly since they’re not going 100% (and, for fic purposes, that’s more likely what you’re going to be angling towards)

Watch Dogs Headcanons - Animal Quirks/ Symbolisms.

Feels like I'm writting a newspaper but nah, just more delulu Aiza journal 😭

Anyways!! Remember when I said I had Headcanons of giving my fav characters animal refs/ symbolisms? Well... Decided to do that today! 🥳

So lemme start with the list! First gonna do with some of the characters from WD1 that got most of my attention/ are more well-known. ( PS: trigger warning for people with Arachnophobia when arriving at Clara's part? Is right under Aiden's, skip if you so wish)

Aiden Pearce - Gray Fox. (Urocyon cinereoargenteus)

Ok, this one is basically common knowledge since we all know that's where his damn nickname comes from lol.

Aiden has a lot of paralels with Gray Foxes, from the round faces, to climbing skills to hunting abilities!

Foxes in general represents Cunniness, Witt, a Sharp Mind and a Dubious Morality with it's Trickstery Nature. However, Gray Foxes represent neutrality, a symbol of maturity, but also sadness and indecisiveness... That sounds familiar, does it? It fits Aiden's description awfully well!

For my HC of his mannerism:

- When Aiden was younger, he used to climb trees all the time back at Belfast. His mom used to yell at him afraid he would fall. ( Wich he did. A lot actually.)

- Like a fox, he has great hearing, detecting easily when people are approaching by.

- He loves fruit (He likes Strawberry Shortcake and Banana Cake) and meat! Although he rarely has time to cook for himself and relies heavily on fast food, he is an enjoyer of chicken and hare meats!

- When Aiden manages to sleep without stress (in very rare occasions), he tend to sleep curled up under his sheets without noticing.

- He has a strong smell. When not because of his constant exercises running after criminals, is because of his wooden deodorant + his trench coat of leather. lol

(Like even after showering, his smell is not bad, just strong than usual.)

- His face is secretly very sensible. If he shaves his face and gets touched their somehow, he'll shiver and recoil bc that's a VERY sensitive face. Even with his stubbles, he can easily feel the texture and touch of someone on his cheeks, like a fox with it's whiskers. 🥺

Clara Lille - Trapdoor Spider! (Liphistius malayanus)

This one is also, once again, common knowledge! I mean, she's called like that in game- lol

Our dear Badboy17, the tattoo girlboss herself, it's pretty obvious where the spider parallels go with Clara: Her lethality, how she work in the dark, carefully using the web in her favor... But is there more to it? 🤔

Spiders represent the Resilience, Unseen Danger and the Connectedness.

All those meanings fit Clara perfect: She's connected to many things, Aiden, the Club, Dedsec... She works in the dark corners, weaving her web of connections and the benefits she can get of it. Similarly, she is an unseen danger, a person that can discover everything about others without them even suspecting, and using that against them... But she's also Resilient. Despite her connections and actions, she weaved her own path to redemption on helping Aiden, to try to fix her mistake and make amends for her past actions... And much like a spider, she was easily killed, because while Spiders are easy to disappear from our sight, people won't think twice about killing them if they're considered a "threat" to them...

For my HC of her mannerisms:

- Clara is excelent with handscraft: Eletronics, Art, Sewing... She's great at anything that requires hand work since she's very precise and perfectionist.

- She's into Urban Exploration! She loves to find dark, abandoned and hidden places left in urban areas, specially if they have some connection to Blume as a bonus.

- One of her favorite foods is Sushi! Is quick, pratical and she just like fishes. (One of Trapdoor Spiders prey 🥰)

- Is not afraid of insects but doesn't like them at all, will either kill or try to take them away from the place, if the insect is harmless.

- Clara has pretty good instinct, mostly reflex in near-body combat, but she rarely displays them since she rarely needs to fight someone nowdays or is caught offguard by gunned opponents.

- She is a solitary person, in the sense that she stays hidden in her little corner and rarely gets out with others, aside for working at the tatto studio she works on. :')

Jordi Chin - Korat Cat. (Felis Catus)

This one was suggested by @paul-poppy-art but I think everyone here agrees Jordi gives major cat energy. XD

Our favorite Fixer is funny, odd and sarcastic lovable sociopathic asshole and we all know it, but saying out loud, that does fit the description of a cat! 😂

Cats are hunters, and their symbolism is mostly tied to Indenpendence, Inteligence and Mystery, this fits Jordi perfect.

A man that works indenpendely, his only criteria is who pays more, wich will be more advanteging to him. An Inteligent and calculative killer that always has a plan in mind and a mysterious person whose' past we know nothing about! Still, he stays by Aiden's side and display his affection in a more non-verbal way (like a cat lol)

For my HC of his mannerisms:

- He has a pretty light walking, you can't hear him comming behind you... Wich is either very dangerous or annoying, depending on your situation.

- Jordi is incredibly sensitive to his surroundings and always knows what is happening around him. You can't surprise him, you simply can't.

- When not working, he tends to stay layed down or sit a lot, like a "big lazy cat". lol

- Is a clean freak. Likes to keep all his work and himself the most well-presented her can. He absolutely despite Aiden's lack of self-care. 😭

- Has extremily good reflexes and flexibility, if he gets to you, you're Fcked. (proof is at WD2)

- Is not a verbal type of guy to express his feelings, but more of the type of doing small gestures to the people he cares for. He brings them food as one of his love languages.

(Kinda like when a cat brings a bird at home to "feed their human". lol)

T-Bone Grady - Bearded Collie Dog. (Canis Lupus Familiaris)

Now is turn for the legendary Hacker Dilf himself!! 🥳

Honestly T-Bone was both easy and hard because well... His name. XD

I struggled a Lot with what race he could be, but looking a bit up, I think Bearded Collie would fit like a glove! For his character design, mostly. 😂

Dogs symbolism is tied to Loyalty, Fidelity, Alertness and Protection.

We see this a lot on T-Bone, he won't hesitate to attack to defend himself, although to his friend's he's loyal and always watch over them and their safety.

(Him trying to reach Aiden to alert him in the Bad Blood DLC) and of course, him always being in alert for Fixers after him.

My personal HCs for his mannerisms:

- Will occasionally pace around or throw/ destruct somethings if too stressed.

- Spend a lot of time on his hair and beared, and tends to let some hair strings behind.

(like a true big furred dog lol)

- Like the Bearded Collie breed, T-Bone doesn't usually "bark", he bites first.

- Can't really stay inside for too long, gets easily bored and just generally hates being idly by.

- Is curious and enjoys a challenge, this old a-hole will take anything to unlock areas/ information that no one else has access to.

- Will always be around the people he cares for, like, physically. He follows/ stays around his friends like a dog with his owner. 😭

Nicole Anne Pearce - Bumblebee. (Bombus)

HEAR ME OUT OK? The patterns on her shirt and her color palette reminded me so much of a Bumblebee! 😭

They're so chonky and floofy! Tell me Nicky ain't cute like them? 🥺🥹

Bumblebees symbolises Hardwork, Productivity, New Beginings and the Importance of a Community! I think those describes Nicole very well!

She's a hard-working single mother providing for her child(ren), her job as an Event Planner reminds me of the systematic work system of bees! Her community (family) is extremily important to her and she fought for their best... Unfortunetly, she had to re-start her life after everything that happened in WD, so all the animal symbolisms fit her character very well. :')

My personal HC for her mannerisms:

- She has the habit of "hum" while working, doing chores or running errands.

(Like the buzz of a bee lol)

-Nicky loves flowers but she doesn't have a garden since she rarely has time to dedicate to it. :')

-She loves honey! And she used to eat a lot of honey-made when she was a kid! 🥰

- Woman can't stay still, she's always moving around trying to do things: Chores, return calls, etc. Aiden used o joke she was "too much of a busy bee".

- She has a pretty characteristic floral smell. Almost all her house smell likes a garden, always with a floral hint in the air.

(Aiden used to find it comforting whenever he visited her and the kids.)

And that's it for today!! There are still missing some other characters from WD1 I still wanted to correlate to animal symbolisms, but this already long af 🥲

As for the tips I find it hard to come up with something out of my mind (i usually provide tips with specific topic) so this post will be quite random

How I learn muscle anatomy when Im bored (or when nothing is drawing out properly

Here's a file for a random study with some heavylifter that i was turning brim into. I never got to actually draw it and i still dunno if i ever will, but his musculature will help me make a couple of points

When i start a study drawing the first thing i do is finding the spine of the person (taking that i am making a study of a character ofc) sometimes it doesnt matter much, but as an exercise to see through something its a good thing.

*Vsauce voice* But what if... You have no idea how to see through something?

In this situation when even I can struggle I decide to make a fast set up with a model (here I used web version of Magic Poser, there's also an app)

You set the model to the pose from the ref as close as you can and then try to understand how their spine works. Honestly, in general if you even already have a ref, sometimes its good to make a model set up for it to get multiple angles and full understanding of shapes. Even better if you have models irl, but those quite expensive. Add. info - I started college this year and its my first ever year to sculpt with clay and i found out that if you try to sculpt anatomy YOU immediately get a better understanding of where what should be after a couple of tries to make an arm or maybe a face (shocker). Its another great exercise. Anyway

The next thing i'd do is to make a kind of a stickman model over the photo, to get a better understanding of simpe shapes like the tubes for arms

Dont get scared because i skipped a lot. but Its really not that much. What I like to do is to trace the silhoutte of the character and then provide myself with references for muscle, so after that i can also look at the photo and try to make pathways of the muscle tissue over what is already drawn. Tracing like this helps a lot to understand how musles work. At this point you can also stop and maybe move on some other study.

I also recommend using brushes that react to pressure you apply to the stylus both in shape and transparensy. Take any picture with pronounced muscle and just try to make out every shape you see and seperate them from each other.

also dont ever underestimate drawing when you're bored on paper. Just drawing your own hand sometimes will help you understand a lot about the way how skin works, or how muscle tense, etc.

TW-Vent bc I js need to get ts outta my sys and written down somewhere.

So I got some shit wrong with me, like mentally. I have these brief periods of extreme depression, like actually attempting suicide multiple times a week or day. During this time and leading up to it I get insane paranoia and I hallucinate and disassociate a lot. It used to be only a couple of less than a few days a week episodes, maybe once of twice a year when I was stressed, then it grew to become ore frequent when shit started heading far south to the industrial sized shit fan.

It usually includes manic type bipolarity, brain fog, seizures (? can't confirm this one considering they're not always clonic tonic and only have others reports for them+ are nocturnal), Nausea, extreme paranoia based anxiety, self harming, suicidal idealation, despair, like total despair, dissacociation, panic attacks, bad decision making and self-imposed isolation in the form of bedrotting and executive dysfunction for anything other than killing myself.

It used be only in extreme stress, but recently (last year or so) it started progressing to happening at any slightly stressful interval. I usually lean on drugs like nicotine or alcohol during this time, but bc I'm only 15 its hard to get my hands on them (well nic, my parents r alcoholics and do not give a fuck what I drink as long as it doesn't affect them legally).

I'm questioning most at the moment whether I'm heading into another episode (I'm only 3 weeks out of my last one which lasted nearly 2 months and v nearly killed me) or its js withdrawal. I'm also wondering whether to break it off with my long term (over a year) gf. We starting dating just after ts started when I was in a 'normal' period, but bc I've only worsened since and tend to tether my mental state to our relationship, I don't want to pressure her too much by having to deal with my mental issues, nor make her feel responsible for my health. Yet, she is also my only life raft in this because not even my counsellor knows about most of this bc I'm scared of the consequences. I know that if I do I will completely isolate myself and probably not make it if its as bad as the last one. Also it could just be the self-isolating tendencies talking, but I don't want to drag her down to drown with me. Its nearly exam season again, she has mock exam in a week and I have them in March. OOOHH i have so many thoughts on this thank you so much for asking. this is long and there are. many images in this post because visual aid is required so under a read more it goes

firstly i have these little bit wonky concepts i made on my phone like months ago for shadow and sonic inspired aggressive skates. id actually kill for shadow and sonic inspired skates sega get on it

anyway though i made these i actually have far more in depth thoughts on these two that deviate from these so it’s time for separate sections!

shadow:

i think i 100% have to make him a skate geek he’s THE skate guy so i think he’s gotta own a pair of like every kind of skate. choosing what he’d most prominently use is a bit hard cause like on one hand, it’s very important that he’s able to grind; sa2 introduced grinding and shadow so i gotta go with aggressive skates in that case because aggressives are skates designed specifically with performing grinds and jumps and such. HOWEVER they’re also really slow cause they usually have only 2 small wheels and are very heavy, so they aren’t suited to skating distances. so i think i’d also consider giving him city skates skates which are skates that are for navigating city terrain and going fast thru it, as well as some tricks like jumps, manuals, n stuff.

aggressive skates / city skates close to what i’d give him

sonic:

of course, similar to shadow i’d probably give him either city skates and/or aggressives, but with the difference that i’d give him a 3 wheel setup on city skates mainly cause it looks neat and distinct and id give him a four wheel setup on aggressives which are faster and a bit harder to do tricks on than the two wheel setup you can see above on the skates i gave shadow (they have those 2 smaller central anti-rocker wheels that make grinding easier but go slower cause only two wheels that you move on. i think sonic would appreciate the speed and the challenge)

aggressives (imagine they have a four wheel setup lmao) / city skates close to what id give him

also it’d be completely remiss of me to not mention speed skates! speed skates are very very fast indeed. they don’t have much ankle support unlike most skates, and if i’m being quite honest i don’t find them nearly as cool as i find aggressive skates or city skates so i’m not really considering them lmao; cool factor is very very important when it comes to sonic. marathon skates are slower speed skates with more ankle support and i think they get a pass, there’s some fairly cool designs out there, but they’re just not cool enough to me to give to sonic lol

an example of a four wheel aggressive skate (notice how all four wheels are the same size and touch the ground unlike the aggressive skates above) / an example of speed skates (see how they don’t have any ankle support and have huge wheels? you can go very fast on them but they’re not maneuverable in varied environments like other kinds of skates)

silver:

i actually have such a vivid image of silver on tacky soft boot recreational/fitness skates (recreational skates don’t specialize in anything in particular. soft boot skates especially being unsuited to anything past beginner level) with glow wheels.

like something like the second one with the wheels of the first is just so. tacky yet endearing to me. i’ve been coming around on glow wheels honestly but personally most soft boot skates don’t look nearly as cool as other skates to me. the combo of glow wheels and soft boot skates make me think of overconfident beginners or children. no better way to put it but i think a little endearing lameness suits silver quite well. yknow, as a treat.

amy:

honestly i don’t have much to say but i think i’d give amy hard boot recreational skates

something like these! i really think these are so cute

i don’t have any more specific visual ref nor a lot to say for everyone else so

everyone else:

id give blaze slalom skates which. like are the same as city skates but with a different use case. slaloming is like, an agility thing where you maneuver around cones and do spins and such idk how to describe it well. i could also give her inline figure skates, which are just figure skates with wheels. figure skating blaze is something so real to me honestly

charmy would have the most obnoxious and brightly coloured kids recreational skates imaginable. glow wheels are a must. i think i’d give espio city skates and vector aggressive skates.

i’d give tails city skates i guess? i’m so sorry tails i have no idea what’d suit him best

1) Does Mysterio use glitter?

Well, I would be disappointed if he didn’t LOL

Special biodegradable glitter that is a-ok for the environment is definitely something he’d use! Mostly for his entrances and exits tho, just to add that extra bit of flair to his performance. He thrives on the melodrama.

Edible glitter would also be good, just in case someone inhaled it by accident when he makes his grand appearance or get away. I mean, he’s not a killer, he’d actually be upset if someone innocent got hurt during his “performances”, someone he wasn’t intending on hurting in some way.. He’d feel horrible about it and, if given the opportunity, he would apologize.

But yeah, this man absolutely uses glitter! :D (despite my loathing of glitter that isn’t sealed to prevent it from transferring to other things, I’d so totally hug him still regardless of the risk of getting glitter on me for days after)

2) Does Acedia have seasonal outfits?

3) How did you come up with Acedia?

OK SO. STORY TIME:

I originally thought about joining everyone during the initial big spidersona bang when Into the Spiderverse was first released and everyone was making their own. I saw a few people talking about spider crab based spidersonas and wanted to join that but, well.. that was too difficult and I never was able to come up with anything cool.

sometime down the line I was initially interested in the anime My Hero Academia (thank heck I never watched more than barely the full first season, knowing all the drama and junk that’s happened, I dodged a bullet LOL) but I did come up with some oc’s for it and even a ‘quirksona‘ that was sloth based named Acedia, basically myself, but more sloth and also not as cool as I wanted:

nothing came of that character so cut to years later, this year, I recently rewatched Spiderverse and started to get into the Spiderman side of things again out of the blue after watching TSSM and falling in love with the show all over again, and doodling Doc Ock, too. I thought back to my old failed attempt at making a spidersona, so I decided to try my hand at that again.

I remembered Acedia’s design and tbh I really did love the design so I reworked it and made adjustments to better resemble a sloth and better resemble Spiderman’s iconic appearance. On top of that I did also just make the character under the costume ME with no real changes at all. And thus, Acedia, The Cryptid Crawler was created:

Anyways, that’s the story behind Acedia’s creation!

Hi! I just wanted to say I absolutely love your art. Can I ask how/where you find references and how you use them when you draw? I have a hard time finding reference pics and then knowing how to actually use them? I'm sorry if that doesn't make sense lol

np at all! depends on the ref really, for drawing things ive never drawn before i just google drawing tutorials lol; sometimes you cant find any that fit your style so then you just kinda wing it? for other things like bodies and such i usually just pose myself and use that as a ref pic! even if you dont have the same build as the person you are drawing you can still use yourself as a base for the flow of the human form and such. if that still isnt working right for me ill just find refs on google, i know if you want to be very careful about using correctly sourced refs there are sites specifically for royalty free images, you can even change your google search results to be specifically free images.

people can be very weird about how to “correctly” use refs but its really as simple as “use refs how ever you want, but if you are directly tracing from the ref, or lifting unique design elements from the ref (ESP if its someone elses original design) then credit the OP of the ref and do not sell the work.” like ive seen discourse over things like “pose theft” or “color pallet theft” and like thats not a thing i promise. meanwhile if you are tracing/lifting from your own original photos it literally doesnt matter, you can do whatever the fuck you want with those. id actually recommend tracing as a warmup/way to study!

personally the way i use reference images either goes:

A: i pull up the image on my canvas/ next to my canvas and just look back and fourth as i draw

B: i do a sketch over/ silhouette of/ skeleton trace over the ref, and then use just the sketch as a ref (this is a lot more useful to me when im trying to reference a pose or general weight and flow of a body rather than specific tangible features) its actually very helpful to not have the original ref distracting you in this case

heres a few examples of refs i used and their finished products, i really have no advice besides like...if you are worried about being too similar to a ref use multiple refs/ change up prominent features? as far as im concerned your finished product shouldnt look exactly like your ref anyways unless its a study

i dont do it because im cheap and lazy, but id also recommend looking into programs that offer assets specifically for tracing over/ referencing! i know most professional art programs utilize them in some way, things like backgrounds in comics or animation are usually either traced over a 3d model or just straight up copy+pasted premade vectors

Ref anon: that's a coincidence that your response disappeared itself cause that's kinda what happened to me. The message that i sent asking for your refs was actually my second message. The first claimed I wasn't allowed to send messages ( i think i took too long to send it?) And i did a faster message after haha.

yeah tumblr 'fixes' things and yet somehow it's always worse. except maybe for the direct message zombie spread that was pretty funny and useful.

anyway what i had been saying in the previous ask before it zapped away was that (jokingly) the 3D person would be best...there's a million and one images of ahk's face from almost every angle but getting references of his hands and arm guards was a challenge and i couldnt find a single screencap of his shoes/feet (so im cheating by having his cape/tunic long enough that you can't see them lol). I used my own hands and arms a lot, posing my fingers and examining the muscles and then trying to replicate it in sculpt. so they might look like my hands a little bit haha - one of the reasons i asked @edteche2 to take a look at it for me - she's an expert on rami's hands :P. this is why i dont sculpt as much as i draw - i get too picky on anatomy and structural details. im hoping that during the holidays - when i'll get a week off work - i will try to do a portfolio sculpt of steve with his guitar /without/ using reference (i've drawn him so much, its memorization at this point). i miss the process of drawing/concepting characters and then sculpting that in my old educational job - but that was always creatures and animals rarely humans. my goal is to get to the point where i can stylize human anatomy like some of my favorite artists do, but i have no idea how they make it look so natural and easy??? (these are times when i think wtf am i doing in an art field i should have used my computer science degree im more useful there).

i think that's pretty much all i've got left to say on references. oh, except one of my friends here was an illustrator at one of those swanky mad-men esque advertising agencies and his collection of 'references' is wall sized. i mean drawer after drawer with clippings and binders of reference and inspiration carefully stacked and labeled. we are LUCKY to be living in a time when all my saved images can fit on a tiny little external drive and are easy to swap in and out.

OK I am going to be cringe and analyze my own video for you because I want to share my intentions when making it. If you’d like to watch it first and make your own analysis of it please do and if you see something different I’d love to hear. Anyways I just wanted to post something positive for the community and to share some Luz love :)

LUZ ORDINARY

I’ll break it down one ‘scene’ at a time but to start I want to explain why I made it. Hot take, but I’m actually not the biggest fan of the song, it just doesn’t fit my personal tastes. I like the writing and singing but it’s just not my cup of tea. I listened to it a few times to get in on the fandom hype and then... my mind just made the clearest picture for a PMV I’ve ever had (and I have many in my brain).  I wanted to make something about Luz, not about lumity. Obviously it’s a lumity song, but I wanted to do something similar to ThatOneDorkDraws where the first half of the song is about the character, and the end is about the ship. I haven’t watched nearly all the Ordinary animatics out there, but I haven’t seen anyone else do this, and Luz deserves to be independently characterized.

Now lets dive in.

Imho the intro is really rocky, I drew everything in order for the most part and I was still getting the hang of things. I used the grom picture of the girls to indicate Luz knowing about Amity’s interest without needing to bring Amity in too early. 

I like the song referencing not having enough poc in media, but the song is also clearly referencing Azura, who is a poc, so I decided to make it a more personal note for Luz. She wants to be a chosen one, to know she has a purpose, and whatever she does will lead in the right direction, but that’s not reality. She has a choice in front of her, make a life in the boiling isles, or go home.

To illustrate that she literally goes home, goes through the door. I wish I had something more interesting here, but I used “goes with the grain” as a through line to try and tie the animatic together. Each time it plays Luz interacts with a tree, this time hesitantly. She knows the human world isn’t where she wants to be. But she turns around, still unsure if the boiling isles is the right choice.

When Luz sings about amity in the human world, she is singing just as much about the world as a whole.

(also calling myself out, the full view of the house thats transparent-ish is roughly traced of a screenshot. It was just a placeholder but I forgot to replace it e-e all the other bgs are hand drawn though)

I wish I hadn’t made Luz seem so upset about being awkward. She likes her quirks, even if they don’t always play to her advantage. I would change her expressions a lot while she talks about being awkward if I could do it over again. That did partially have to do with me not being good at drawing faces though. Drawing luz smiling while singing was next to impossible x-x

then she gets on the roof, which when scripting this I thought was a canon location, but I actually think the fandom just decided this roof was here lol because I could not find ref for it

Then we get to the next “go with the grain” line, this time she’s moving forward, towards something great, but she holds onto the tree like she did before because she is still unsure.

When Luz looks at the key she is considering going back to the human world again, but she realizes magic is a part of who she is, and that finalizes her choice to stay. Both to stay on the isles and to be with Amity.

That part and the rest of the video is where I feel like I got the hang of this whole PMV thing, and I’m proud of the movement and framing and compositions and stuff. I think I made some clever choices here c:

With the final “don’t want to go with the grain” Luz fully rejects normality and the human world. (not to say she never wants to go back, but the boiling isles is her home) so she birsts through the treas instead of pausing at them. Mirroring Amity on Grom night with her impulsive choice to put her heart on the line.

Amity is hard to draw, but she only shows up a couple times so it’s fiiiine just ignore it lol

Luz shows her affection to amity and they like confess feelings before we go into the little finale shot

I know at this point Luz would not have the door, but I needed it for my concept so this PMV is not fully canon (it was never gunna be because the song doesn’t perfectly fit canon)

Anyways in the end it shows Luz giving Belos the door and blowing it up. She regrets losing connection with the human relm, but Eda and king are there to help her figure things out. Then she drags amity into the little family unit because we couldn’t end without seeing amity again for a sec
