can u write something with the hedgehogs? sonic amy shadow silver? idk what about i think it would just be funny for them all to interact or something
hell yeah! admittedly this isn’t “funny” and more marginally contemplative, but i hope you still enjoy :) also I definitely fudged some details (intentionally) about the auroras lights… also on ao3!
“It’s not that I don’t like climbing a mountain at the crack of dawn,” Sonic begins, not bothering to stifle his yawn. “But remind me again why you woke me up to do this, Ames?”
“We’re going to see the aurora adabalis!” Amy exclaimed, cheerfully clasping her hands together, the sound echoing in the stillness of night. It sent a few animal friends skittering away from surprise, and Amy apologized to the poor animals she had spooked before continuing, slightly quieter, “We only see the southern lights every ten years, and this year's weather conditions are perfect for seeing them!”
“That’s right,” Sonic said, idly stretching an arm behind his head. “And you said it does some witchy spiritual stuff to see it?”
“It’s said to revitalize your spiritual energy. And, it’s seen as a token of good luck to witness it! So I made Tails figure out the best possible viewpoint to see the light show to make sure we soak up all that good energy and fortune.”
“Well, I don’t know if I believe in all that, but I do appreciate a good light show.”
“Tails calculated the very top of Widget Mountain in the Gimmick Mountain range of South Island would be our best bet of seeing the most visible section of the aurora. I’m so excited, I just can’t wait to see them!”
“Looks like you won’t have to wait too much longer. We made it to the top.”
The trees had thinned out tremendously by the time they had climbed to the plateau of the mountain. Amy cheerfully bulldozed ahead of Sonic while he settled himself at the very peak of the mountain, over looking the rest of South Island. The topography of the island was always in constant flux thanks to spending decades housing the Chaos emeralds, yet Sonic couldn’t help but reminisce fondly on the good old adventures that happened here, spotting a few familiar landmarks.
“Oh!” Amy cried, catching Sonic’s attention. “Someone beat us here!”
“I didn’t expect to see you here,” a familiar voice said. Sonic spied Amy standing over Shadow, who was sitting at an edge of the peak, just below the very tip of the mountain. Unlike Amy, who had brought a blanket and a picnic to celebrate the event, Shadow had seemingly only brought himself, tearing his gaze away from the stars to give them his attention.
“Amy’s all into this astrology stuff,” Sonic explained, jumping from the tip of the peak to the cliff Shadow was nestled on.
“Don’t you mean astronomy?”
“In this case, it’s technically both!” Amy cheered. She set her basket of goodies down and began to unfold the blanket. “I’ve always loved astrological phenomena- it’s why I wanted Sonic to meet me at Little Planet all those years ago. And it’s fun to think about the possibilities of destiny and fate the stars might be trying to tell us. The auroras are seen as good fortune to those who watch them!”
“I suppose it’s not unlike wishing upon a star,” Shadow muses. “I hadn’t heard of the spiritual significance of it before. Maria had only explained the scientific aspect behind them, as disturbances in the Earth's magnetosphere caused by enhanced speeds of solar wind from coronal holes and mass ejections.”
Despite all of his space travel, Sonic can safely say he wasn’t following. Amy smiled at the mention of Maria. “She really liked space then?”
“Adored it. I think even if she didn’t grow up on a space station, she would have found it as a calling. As much as she longed to go back to earth, she was greatly interested in exploring other planets.”
“I bet she would have loved the Wisps,” Sonic adds, thinking fondly of Yacker as he glances up at the stars.
There was a faint smile on Shadow’s expression as he thoughtfully gazed at the horizon. “Certainly.”
“Oh!” Amy exclaimed. “Shadow, you were alive fifty years ago, did you and Maria watch the aurora adabalis?”
“From the ARK, yes. Maria hoped to one day see it from Earth. She calculated this mountain would have the best viewing range.”
“She was a Robotnik,” Sonic considered. “Tails got the same result, too, which is why we’re here. It’s supposed to start in five minutes or so, if I remember right.”
“Tails was speaking in a lot of jargon,” Amy admitted, checking her watch. “But I think you’re right. You can already feel the magnetic warmth of good fortune in the air.”
“Or it’s the magnetospheric plasma,” Shadow added wryly.
“Blah, blah, blah!” Amy settled the blanket on the ground, then began to prod at Shadow to push him towards it. Sonic plopped down at one end while Shadow begrudgingly moved to sit on the other, Amy settling herself in the middle. Sonic was already sneaking a treat from her picnic basket as she began pulling out a few drinks, hungry from the traveling. “I bet you don’t even know what that means.”
“Much like Tails,” Shadow began, carefully, holding the drink Amy had set in his hands. “Maria was prone to rattling off information at the drop of a dime. I may have memorized what she had said, but I can’t confidently admit I followed along perfectly.”
Amy giggled. Sonic leaned back, hands behind his head. “Genius siblings, huh?”
The peace between the three of them was broken one minute before the light show was going to begin. A flash of brilliant white, not involved in the typical aurora, appeared right in front of them. A figure stumbled, nearly falling off the cliff, not expecting the ground to be less solid, and it’s Sonic’s quick reflexes that pull them back from the edge.
“I had it handled,” Silver says, though his slight flailing seconds ago said otherwise. “I have psychokinesis, after all.”
“And you sure were using it,” Sonic teases.
“What are you doing here?” Shadow intervened, before Silver decided to try to pick a fight with Sonic. The last thing Shadow wanted was for them to miss the aurora because of them.
“Oh!” Silver straightened, brushing off his fur. “Reports in the future said there was an astrological disturbance today! I was afraid it could be associated with the apocalypse, so I cane to investigate.”
Sonic laughed, settling back down on the blanket, earning an irritated scowl from Silver at his blase reaction. “Ha! Well, you don’t have to worry about all that. It’s just the aurora lights.”
“The… aurora lights?”
“Yeah!” Amy cheered. “You should watch them with us!”
Without much choice, Amy latches on to Silver’s wrist, dragging him to sit next to her. Silver stumbles, falling gracelessly on to the blanket, earning another snicker from Sonic, and a crack in Shadow’s stoic, supposedly unimpressed look. Silver didn’t have time to bicker, however, because Amy was manhandling him to look at the horizon.
“The aurora lights are a natural phenomenon,” Amy began to explain. “I don’t really know the science behind it, but the basic concept is that it lights up the sky with beautiful colors. It occurs every ten years, and Ii’s completely harmless!
“It’s harmless?”
“Totally,” Sonic confirmed. “Unless Eggman somehow manages to harness the power of color, I think we’re safe.”
“Watch it with us!” Amy insisted. “It would do you some good, I think! The aurora lights are said to bring good fortune to those who see it!”
“Good fortune?” Silver repeats, peering thoughtfully at the stars. He frowns, crosses his arms, then decides. “Well, I guess I better double check that it really is as harmless as you claim.”
“It’s about to begin,” Shadow warns, ceasing the chatter between the rest of them.
It truly was a spectacular sight, watching the sky become alight with brilliant swathes of color. It was as if the planet had been shrouded in colorful veils of plush purples, gorgeous greens, and pleasant pinks. Silence seemed to hush over the entire world as the sky was draped in magnificent lights, stars twinkling in the distance as the world was covered in marvelous shades of ethereal colors.
It lasts for roughly half an hour, the four of them watching the spectacle in a hushed awe. Sonic smiles serenely as the lights begin to fade, wondering at the natural beauty of their world. It’s was always a wonderful reminder to see the things Sonic was protecting in action.
Perhaps Amy was right. Sonic did feel rejuvenated at the sight of such a magical scene.
“Wow,” Silver murmurs, the first to break the silence. “That was beautiful!”
“It really is better to see on earth,” Shadow muses.
“Too bad it only comes every ten years,” Sonic complained. “It’s a real sight for sore eyes.”
“That just makes it sweeter,” Amy decides. “Would it be just as pretty if it wasn’t so rare?”
“I guess so,” Silver considers, appearing lost in thought. “Nothing would be beautiful, it if was permanent.”
Shadow and Silver peer thoughtfully at the stars, watching the last of the colors fade into nothingness. The moon was still brilliant, however, waxing over the planet as it always did, and Sonic wondered if that was necessarily true. Strawflowers bloom across the grass down the mountain in abundance, and Sonic thinks of a world far away, of an eternal kingdom that would cost the habitants their souls.
Forever was impossible, that much was certain. Things in life were meant to be short but sweet, slipping from your hands like the grains of a sand. It didn’t make them any less meaningful. But did rarity always make things more charming?
“I don’t know,” Sonic says, turning his eyes towards the stars like every one else. “We can see the stars every night, but their beauty never dulls.”
Silver leans back, considering his words. Shadow closes his eyes, lost in thought. Amy smiles, looking at Sonic, watching as he breaks the tension through another yawn.
“Well,” Sonic begins, standing back up. “I’m about to fall asleep here, but Amy brought a real nice breakfast. Why don’t we race to get the blood flowing, hm?”
Silver groaned. “Can’t you ever just enjoy the moment?”
“The moments been enjoyed. Now come on, are you just afraid to lose again?”
“No way!” Silver hops to his feet, itching to go. It was never that hard to goad him into a fight, thought it was clear he wasn’t genuinely irritated.
“You’ll both be eating my dust,” Shadow said, unimpressed, standing up slowly, just for the drama.
Amy pouts, crossing her arms. “Our food will be cold by the time you’re done!”
“Then we’ll just have to make it a fast race!” Silver enthuses.
“Isn’t that the goal of every race?” Sonic asks. “Come on Amy- last one to the Aqua Lake has to buy everyone dessert!”
“Ready! Set! Go!”
Amy chases right after them as they scramble down the mountain, laughing so loud the wind doesn’t even drown her out.
