do you think there could be a weird route with your oc ham? maybe like RadioRaze or something? anyways have a good day!!! :)
i like to think a weird route with ham would be pretty much impossible bc ham is a kinda stubborn and maybe-a-little-mean-on-purpose 12 year old with no allegiances NDNDNHSJ she’d find out lancer was in your inventory and just talk to him the whole time and ignore you and the only reason he doesn’t immediately ditch you for trying to tell her what to do is bc lancer is there and he wants to talk to him bc he seems like fun. have a good day too :]
#you’d tell him to do something and she’d go ‘you didn’t even say please so no. also you’re old.’#the monarch’s court#like in beatdown route with sweet he thinks you’re on the same side with the same goal and you pretty much peer pressure him int#into worse and worse shit in the name of his cause like ‘this is what you wanted. this is how we do it’#ive been thinking ham doesn’t care about his brother’s revolution bc Well Queen Was Nice To Me I Think She Just Doesn’t Like You Guys#she does think the music ban is real though he just doesn’t really care bc she’s not part of the band anyway#deltarune ocs#mostly unrelated but i think it’s neat that (with my headcanon) that kk and ham grew up with the same parents(capn and sweet dont reme#don’t remember them) that kk seems to hav become a neutral ground people pleaser type of person to avoid conflict w sweet and capn but h#but ham became combative to people telling them what to do. he also doesn’t like conflict but in that she’ll tell her brothers to stfu#kk became passive while ham became combative even though they came from the same environment and upbringing. thats what i was trying to say#anyway i should draw ham again. i miss him

The Geraskier Soccer Parents AU of my dreams (in an early morning strike of weird-brain):
-Geralt knows he isn't the best dad ever. He tries so goddamn hard, but his job is demanding and consumes so much time and even with Ciri being seven already, he still has essentially no clue what he's doing. He sometimes falls into bed, half-dead, and she is the one to give him a good-night kiss. He sometimes forgets she prefers cheese and puts ham on her sandwiches. He is sometimes too happy to have her sleep over at her friends rather than invite them to their house. He doesn't read her all the children's classics, doesn't go trick-or-treating with her, doesn't even pretend Santa Claus is a thing. He isn't the best dad ever. He tries.
-There is one thing he never, ever fails to do and that is take Ciri to soccer practice. Ciri picks up and drops hobbies, interests, even tastes by the week, still unsure what she wants to pursue, but soccer isn't only her favourite pastime, it's theirs. Practice is twice a week and they have a ritual for it. Geralt picks her up from school and drives her there, she tells him about what the dumb boys in her class said, how her art project is going etc. Geralt is there throughout practice, tucked in between Foltest - a guy who is constantly worried for his daughter Adda to get hurt and also very much anxious for her to do well - and Tissaia - a woman who has not one, but three girls in Ciri's age group and several more in others, and knits like a magician - and watches. He takes notes, silently cheers for Ciri.
-After their games and while Ciri changes, Geralt chats with her coach Vesemir - who used to be Geralt's coach, but now prefers to train the girls' teams - about the progress of the team, upcoming tournaments etc. Sometimes when Vesemir is indisposed, Geralt even leads the practice. When Ciri is all done, Tissaia usually has another hat or mitten finished and Geralt and her drive with their girls to whatever food place the girls are in the mood for. They have an early dinner in which Tissaia lectures the girls on their form and in which Ciri is sometimes allowed to sit on Geralt's lap - but only if Fringilla or Yen don't tease hear about it - but in which she definitely gets to steal his milkshake (Geralt hates milkshakes). Geralt only praises her when they're back in the car and Ciri tells him he's too much of a softie with her and should be more like Tissaia. Should maybe marry Tissaia. They both laugh because that is never going to happen.
-Life is good that way. It's not perfect, it's not without bumps, certainly not without tears and scrapes, but whatever the job, whatever injury Geralt carries with him, however long he has to drive, he never, never ever misses soccer practice.
-The season's just kicked off in the year of Ciri's eighth birthday when Geralt and her arrive early on the field to find the stands empty save for a girl in the most ridiculously colorful excercise clothes and blond hair that is braided intricately around her head. With her is a man, maybe five years Geralt's junior. Ciri bolts towards them with a bright grin and Geralt is hesitant to follow. He knows neither the girl nor the man, but from what he can gather she wants to join the team which is just what they need as they're one girl short this season. "Hi, I'm Ciri, I adore your braids." Geralt holds back on the eye-roll. It's nice Ciri can make friends this easily, but his house already is a shrine for role-playing and board games, dolls and random DVDs and another friend means more things Ciri will want to try out. "Thank you," the girl replies and tilts her head to better show them off. "My uncle Jaskier braided them for me, I'm sure he can do yours too." Both girls look up expectantly at the man and Geralt only really notices him then. He is averagely built with bright blue eyes and an even brighter smile. His floral print shirt has three open buttons and his pants barely reach his ankles. He has the look of a flippant music teacher or a hipster coffeeshop owner. His eyes meets Geralt's and, wait, did he just wink? "I'd love to, dear," he says in a smooth voice that absolutely does not go straight to Geralt's guts. Geralt turns on the spot and decides to pressure check the balls, but he can hear the others giggling as Jaskier braids Ciri's hair. "I'm Priscilla by the way. What's up with your dad?" - "Oh, don't mind him, he's bad with meeting new people." - "Very intense." That's Jaskier. Oh, Geralt will show him intense.
-Ciri invites them to their after-practice dinner. Geralt wants to begrudge her that, but she and Priscilla have latched onto each other in record speed and Jaskier actually fights Tissaia on some of her more strict stances and he braids Yen's and Sabrina's hair too, only Fringilla doesn't want him to touch hers which he respects. Geralt and Tissaia glance at each other. Come to a silent agreement. They may not befriend Jaskier, but he's sunny and so good with the girls and they can use someone like him among their ranks, someone who doesn't have Calanthe's tendency for swear words or Crach's tendency to break out beer in the middle of practice or even Nenneke's tendency to relate everything to the workings of god.
-Jaskier is as faithful as Geralt, perhaps the only one who shows up every time without fail. Shani's parents only drop her off and Crach switches between Cerys' and Hjalmar's practices and Tissaia sometimes texts Geralt to pick up her girls. Jaskier is there, every time, earlier than any of the others. He chats with Vesemir about his day-to-day, brings home-baked cookies for everyone, he cheers and whoops and tries very hard to understand soccer even though it's evident he doesn't. Geralt never wonders why it's him and not Priscilla's parents that come, it's none of his business. He begins to tolerate Jaskier, but he knows that is where he has to draw the line. He has his hands full with Ciri and his job and his brothers too. He can't afford friendships that extend beyond the field.
-Jaskier doesn't let him off though. He always takes the spot next to Geralt (technically an improvement over Foltest's sweaty visage) and prattles on and on, at least until the game begins. When it does, Jaskier divides his attention between the girls and the stack of paper on his lap which he annotates during practice. It's often either sheet music or the illegible scrawl of pre-teens or wonkily drawn instruments. Jaskier already told him, but from that too it is obvious that Geralt's hunch was right, he is a music teacher. Geralt finds his eyes darting to Jaskier's long fingers, nimble and calloused from the various string instruments he plays. Finds himself glancing at where Jaskier's tongue peeks out in concentration. He listens to the man's ramblings and hums his replies and comes to dislike the days when Vesemir isn't there and he has to focus all his attention on giving the girls a good practice. Not that he doesn't want to, it's just that having Jaskier at his back unnerves him.
-(Jaskier for his part doesn’t care at all about soccer, but he cares about Priscilla so he convinced her parents to let him take her; after that, she said it would be fine if he dropped her off and picked her up again, but Jaskier pretends he is super invested in the sport and the team and he is, but mostly he’s invested in charming Geralt)
-After an entire season of mutual pining and obliviousness, Tissaia decides she's had enough and rallies the other parents. She has Foltest organize a big party at his country house, has Nenneke promise to look after the girls (the woman doesn't drink) and has Crach whip out the finest spirits he has in storage. Calanthe makes a phenomenal playlist and it's Tissaia's job to get Geralt to the party (Jaskier's not a problem) and dress up nicely. Only Aridea, Renfri's stepmother, refuses to pitch in, but she's been a bitch anyway.
-When Geralt picks up Jaskier at his downtown flat he has to grip the wheel of his rover hard in order not to short-circuit. Jaskier has done something to his hair that Geralt can't name but that makes him go woozy inside. He wears a plain shirt that compliments his eyes and hugs his body just right and he looks high on life with color in his cheeks and the most dazzling smile. He's gorgeous. "Darling, don't you look dashing," Jaskier says excitedly and props his feet up on the dashboard, only after kissing Geralt on the cheek. Which is not fair. "Likewise," Geralt mutters, then blushes furiously. He didn't want that to come out, oh no. Jaskier either didn't hear or acts like it and they drive in silence to Foltest's country house. Well, aside from the songs Jaskier hums under his breath, some new composition no doubt.
-At first, Geralt thinks it's a nice enough party for someone who doesn't like parties. Foltest's grilling burgers, they all have cocktails, the music is mellow. Not that that stops Jaskier from swirling an already quite drunk Calanthe over the terrace in dazzling moves. Geralt wants to be swirled like that. "You really have it bad, don't you?" Crach comments when he notices Geralt staring. Geralt downs his beer (he's no cocktail drinker) and tries pointedly not to stare at how Jaskier's swinging his ass around.
-The buzz makes it easier and he relieves Foltest at the barbecue for a bit. But then Jaskier walks up to him, a little short on breath and grinning his most flirtatious little grin. It gives him fucking dimples. Sigh. "Hey you big strong man," Jaskier says. He smells like pineapple and coconut, but isn't even a little drunk. "Jask," he says, pointedly flipping a burger. "Foltest says he has an old karaoke machine in the shed, but it's too heavy for me. Help me?" - "...fine." Geralt gestures for Foltest to keep up with the meat and he and Jaskier make their way along a garden path that winds through thickets and by a small pond. The shed is painted blue and white and Geralt and Jaskier find it very much cluttered, but not dirty which is nice. Geralt only understands it's a trap when it's already sprung on them. The tiny click of the look is almost inaudible over Jaskier's anxious commentary of their search for the machine. There is only one small window and no light Geralt can see. Fuck.
-"Ehm, Jaskier?" he reaches out and gently touches Jaskier's shoulder which has the other man yelp and jump. Which doesn't bode well for what Geralt has to tell him. "I think we're trapped." The effect is immediate. Jaskier goes rigid, his breath catches. Is he afraid? Claustrophobic perhaps? Shit, so he can't be in on the joke. "Jask?" - "Geralt. I know we aren't the closest, but I need you to hold me right now." And he launches himself at Geralt. Maybe he is in on the joke? No, he's trembling too hard for that. Geralt catches him and does as asked. "I am absolutely going to die," Jaskier whines into Geralt's neck and Geralt can't help a small chuckle as he rubs Jaskier's back soothingly. This is... surprisingly nice for a trap. Also likely Tissaia's doing. Geralt has a rare idea. "What if I distract you until someone finds us?" he murmurs against Jaskier's hair and Jaskier draws back a little. In the half-dark his eyes glisten, widen when they meet Geralt's. "You would?" - "Close your eyes, Jaskier." Geralt feels a surge of daring, perhaps granted by the intimacy and seclusion of the situation. He catches Jaskier's lips with his own. When they part, Jaskier grins, shaking from something other than fear. "I thought you didn’t much like me," he whispers. "I thought I got on your nerves." - "Idiot." They kiss again and, faintly, Geralt can hear someone cheer from outside.

"Weakness: dogs," Joel muttered, his eyes flickering over the page he was working on. On it was a small picture of Boy attacking the creature they had fought yesterday, but his gaze fell upon the drawing that he had added at the last moment. One that looked a lot like the girl that was currently still sleeping beside him and was holding katanas in the air. Smiling softly, the boy scribbled down another word before whispering, "And Robin."
Joel glanced over at his best friend at that, his eyes slowly tracing over her face while his smile softened a little at the sight of her. He stared at her for a moment longer before turning his attention over to Boy who was watching him. "That's you," Joel said as he gestured towards the dog drawing in his journal. "It's a little rough around the edges, but that's what I get for attempting to draw with one arm."
Joel looked back at Y/N at that, smiling softly as he glanced down at his arm which she was currently resting on. He hadn't wanted to move it in fear of her waking up, so he had just been very careful and maneuvered his body so that he could draw with just one hand while the girl slept.
Boy titled his head and Joel chuckled softly as he closed his book and set it aside. "You wouldn't happen to have a power source to a ham radio in here, would you?" Joel asked as he peaked over the girl's shoulder at the dog, making sure to talk quietly so he wouldn't wake Y/N up. "'Cause I have a. . ." Boy lowered his head and the boy frowned. "Never mind."
Joel laid his head back against the pillow again, letting his other arm wrap back around Y/N’s waist as he soaked in the moment for a little bit longer. He wasn't sure how long it would be before they were able to find another place to rest that had a bed or a couch. Maybe that's why he had let Y/N sleep for as long as he had. It's definitely not because he liked getting to have her this close.
Nope. Not at all.
Although he would be lying if he said he hadn't gotten the best sleep of his life last night.
Soon enough it would be Aimee he would be sleeping with like this, Joel reminded himself. And at that thought, he knew it was time to get up and moving again if he hoped to be reunited with Aimee soon.
Sighing, Joel let his gaze fall upon Y/N once again and he smiled as he reached over and gently poked her face like he used to when they were younger. "Robin," he whispered. "Wake up." She let out a small groan and turned before nestling her face against his neck, an action that made him freeze momentarily while his cheeks became a tinge pink. "Robin, you got to get up. We need to get going."
Y/N let out a small sigh, her breath fanning against his neck and sending chills down his spine. "Not a morning person, remember?" she muttered.
"I know, but the sooner we get going, the sooner we get to Aimee," he reminded her. "And the sooner we get to Aimee, the sooner you can get back to sleeping in."
Y/N leaned back at that and opened an eye to look at the boy. Their faces were mere inches apart and she felt her heart skip a beat because of the fact, but like always, Joel didn't seem fazed. "You make a compelling argument," she finally said before letting out a sigh. "Fine. I'm up."
Joel grinned at that and Y/N let out a huff as she sat up and stretched, the movement finally allowing Joel to move both of his arms once again. The two pulled themselves up off of the makeshift bed after that and they got ready and picked up their things.
It wasn't long before they were both standing in front of Boy with their backpacks on their back once again. The dog looked back up at them, his eyes never leaving their own which made Y/N frown slightly. She bent down and Boy trotted over to her, allowing the girl to pet him while Joel watched with a soft smile.
His eyes flickered around the bus one last time before hesitating on a small object laying on a table. He was quick to pick it up, his smile widening as he said, "Huh. Look, Robin. Lipstick."
Said girl looked up and hummed in response before getting distracted by Boy once again, the dog licking her face while Y/N softly laughed. Joel continued to look at the lipstick before saying, "Aimee. Hey, would you mind if I kept this?" He looked to Boy who merely glanced at him before turning back to Y/N. "Thanks."
"All right, well. . ." Joel began, letting out a sigh as he shoved the lipstick into his bag. "This is it. Thanks for having us. I should. . .stop talking to a dog."
Y/N chuckled and looked up at Joel. "Probably," she teased earning a playful glare from the boy.
Joel held his hand out and Y/N took it before he helped her back up onto her feet. He squeezed her hand once before letting go and giving Boy a small wave. "Okay. We'll see ya," Joel said. He then began to walk towards the bus door, Y/N smiling one last time towards Boy before following after her friend.
Joel opened the bus door and hesitated as he looked out. Y/N stuck her head out beside him, the two both looking around before she said, "Looks clear." Joel nodded in agreement and hopped out of the bus. Y/N right behind him.
They started to walk off in the direction they had been heading the day before, but Y/N couldn't help but glance back at the bus with a small frown on her face. Joel noticed this almost instantly and frowned as well before gently nudging her arm. "What's wrong?" he questioned, his eyes flickering over her face in concern.
"I'm just. . ." the girl hesitantly flickered her gaze back towards Joel and sighed. "I'm just going to miss Boy. It was kind of nice being able to see a dog after all this time."
Joel gave her a sympathetic smile. "I know what you mean," he told her before wrapping an arm around her shoulders and pulling her close to him as he squeezed her comfortingly. "After we get to Aimee's colony I'll make it my next priority to find a dog just for you, okay?"
"Cause finding a dog will be that easy," Y/N muttered with a small roll of her eyes and the beginnings of a smile starting to appear on her face.
"All I need to know is that the dog will be for you and it'll be easy no matter how long it takes," Joel assured her. "If Boy could make it this long, then there are bound to be more. Besides—"
However, Joel was quickly cut off by the sound of the bus doors opening up behind them. The two friends froze and Joel let his arm drop back down to his side as they turned to look back at the bus where they could now see Boy sitting in the entrance. He barked instantly and their eyes widened in alarm.
"Oh, hey, hey, hey!" the best friends exclaimed, both of them putting their arms up in alarm as they attempted to hush the dog.
"No, no, no. None of that," Joel insisted. "Something might hear you."
Boy stared at them for a moment before exiting the bus and walking over to them. Y/N glanced towards Joel, the two sharing a look before looking back at Boy.
"You. . .you wanna come with us?" Y/N offered, her eyes flickering over the dog who titled his head and sat down at her words.
"Okay. You can come," Joel replied, smiling softly before glancing towards Y/N. He gave her a small wink. "Found you a dog, Robin."
Y/N rolled her eyes and playfully shoved the boy making him laugh while Boy just watched them. "Let's go," Joel said after he managed to calm down his laughter. "Come on."
Y/N and Joel both turned to begin their walk once again, but Boy ran back into the bus. The two hesitated, turning back to the bus in confusion before Boy came running back out with the red dress in his mouth. Y/N put a hand over her heart, her gaze turning towards Joel who momentarily locked eyes with her before looking back down at Boy.
"Yeah, we can bring that. You want me to put it in my bag?" Joel questioned. He reached down to grab the dress but Boy instantly growled. "Okay. It's okay. I'm gonna keep it safe. I promise." Boy reluctantly let go and Joel nodded slightly before stuffing it in his backpack. "Going in the safe backpack. See? Okay, you ready?"
Boy wagged his tail and Y/N instantly smiled before kneeling down on the ground to pet the dog and give him a hug. Boy began licking her face and Y/N let out a small laugh while Joel watched them fondly. "Let's go. Come on," Joel told them. The girl looked up at him and he smiled before holding his hand out. The girl took it and he helped her up onto her feet before they began walking off once again, Y/N swinging their hands between them in an exaggerated way while Boy barked happily and followed behind them.
"Okay, that's really gonna have to stop," Joel insisted as he glanced back at the dog. Y/N chuckled and Joel looked her way, his eyes flickering over her face before down to their hands which she was still swinging between them. "I've said it before and I'll say it again, but we're kind of like Batman and Robin. I'm obviously Batman, but don't worry. Robin's pretty cool too."
Y/N playfully rolled her eyes and let go of Joel's hand in order to wrap her arms around his shoulders in a small sort of lazy hug as they walked, a thoughtful look upon her face as she asked, "What does that make Boy?"
Joel glanced her way and she let one arm drop in order to gesture towards the two of them. "If we're Batman and Robin, then what does that make Boy?" she repeated, now pointing towards the dog who was happily trotting along beside them.
Joel hesitated a moment before asking, "Have you ever heard of Bat-Hound?" Y/N shook her head, her arms falling back down to her side as she walked beside the boy. "Bat-Hound isn't really well known anyways, but he was in a few things. He was the canine crime-fighting partner of Batman and Robin for a little while. So Boy could be our Bat-Hound."
Y/N smiled softly and looked down at Boy before whispering, "Batman, Robin, and Bat-Hound." Her gaze flickered up to Joel who turned his head to look back at her. She flashed him that smile of hers before saying, "I like it."
Joel smiled back at that, his hand gently reaching out to grab ahold of her own and give it a small squeeze. Batman, Robin, and Bat-Hound.
He liked the sound of that too.
- - -
As time began to slip by, Y/N found herself feeling happier than she had in a really long time. They may have monsters to stay away from and they found themselves having to fight, but they were back on the surface. They were together and they had Boy. It was almost like she was back in the good old days before the apocalypse and Aimee, the days where it had just been her and Joel.
Sometimes she wished she could go back to those times. Everything had been so much simpler then.
Her heart hadn't been broken yet.
Y/N had to remind herself every once in a while that they were traveling so that Joel could reunite with Aimee, but when she wasn't thinking about that, she was enjoying the time she had left with her best friend. The conversations that they had, the moments where they took a break just to sit and pet Boy while they softly whispered to each other, the adrenaline coursing through their veins as they ran hand in hand to hide from monsters before bursting out into laughter once they realized how ridiculous they were. It all made her wonder why they hadn't tried living on the surface years ago.
"Robin," Joel said, elbowing the girl in her side and managing to throw her out of her thoughts. The girl winced slightly and looked to Joel who gave her an apologetic smile. "Sorry, look." She followed where he was pointing to a bush of berries. Her eyes widened while Joel was already jogging over to them.
He picked a few off and tossed them to Y/N and whispered, "Sustenance. Perfect." He began to try and peel off some more while Boy nipped at his leg and Y/! stared at the berries in her hands. "Ow. Ow! Ow!" Boy grabbed his pant leg and began pulling on him. "What. . .What are you doing?" Boy let him go and started barking while Joel furrowed his eyebrows and stared closer at the berries.
"But they look so good." Joel held it up to the light and frowned at the sight of the dark lines within. They were poisonous. One bite and he would die without question. "Yeah, you know what? I don't think I should eat these."
"Shit, Boy. He was so close to eating those. Why'd you stop him?" Y/N asked in a teasing manner, having already dropped hers once she noticed the way Boy was acting. Joel feigned hurt and threw a berry at her which Y/N quickly dodged.
She stood back up with her mouth open in surprise before saying, "Joel, did you just throw poisonous fruit at me? I thought we were best friends."
Joel just rolled his eyes with a small smile on his face as he dropped the rest of the berries and began to walk away. However, he didn't get far before something hit the back of his head. Joel stopped instantly and frowned as he turned around to see a berry now on the ground beside him.
Joel glanced up at Y/N who smirked as she wiped off her hands and said, "Now we're even." She then walked pass Joel without a second though and called out, "Come on, Boy." Boy was quick to run after her and Joel stared after the two for a moment before smiling softly and shaking his head as he jogged after them.
"Hey! Wait up!"
- - -
Dear Aimee,
Guess what? Robin and I got a dog, and he's the coolest. His name is Boy.
He helped Robin save my life from a giant frog in a pool who tried to eat me with his tongue. And then we hung out on his bus.
Man, do the three of us make a great team.
We found out we have like a ton in common too. Boy fits right in with me and Robin. I feel like the three of us can talk about anything.
You got to see us out here. We're like this iconic trio.
I don't know. Feels like when we're together, we're unstoppable.
It's crazy the things you forget about the world. Like the smells. The grass, the trees, the flowers. I had almost forgotten what Robin was like outside the bunker. But seeing her out in the world again, the sun lighting up her eyes while her personality flows around her like the wind in her hair. I hadn't realized how much the bunker seemed to suppress who she really was. And seeing her back to herself is something I would never want to see be taken away ever again.
I mean, sure, you get the occasional bloody corpse, but—
Joel let out a yell of surprise as the floor suddenly gave way below him. Before he knew it, he was falling down and hitting the ground with a loud thump, his notebook which he had been writing in going flying down beside him.
"Joel!" Y/N yelled out, Boy barking alongside her as the two scrambled over to the hole and looked down. Joel let out a groan from where he was laying before blinking his eyes open.
"I'm okay," he muttered, slowly pulling himself up onto his feet and wiping the dust from his clothes. He stuck his notebook into his backpack before taking in his surroundings, a frown appearing on his face as he whispered, "Oh, no. I fell in a hole."
"You'd make a much better Captain Obvious than a Batman," Y/N stated, a teasing smile playing on her lips while she pulled her backpack off and began rummaging around for something she could use to help the boy.
Joel sarcastically laughed from below. "I always did love you for your humor," he shot back earning a wink from the girl in response. Joel looked away at that, the corners of his lips tugging up into a small smile. "Okay, I just gotta. . .climb out. I can climb out."
"You work on doing that while I actually try and find something to pull you out. I could've sworn I packed some rope. . ." Y/N muttered. She then hesitated before whispering, "Or was that on the last hunting mission?"
"Uh. . .Robin," Joel called out, his voice pulling the girl from her thoughts as she hummed in response. "Are there any monsters that dig holes like this one? Maybe some that dig a series of holes connecting together?"
"Yeah?" Y/N said in a confused voice before her eyes widened in realization. "You're not alone down there. . .are you?"
"I don't think so," Joel admitted, his voice a little softer. The girl was quick to peak over the side of the hole, her eyes scanning the area with more attention than she had before. She could see a system of holes all connecting to the bigger one that Joel had fallen into and the closer she looked, the more she could see the dozens of bones lining the floor.
Y/N’s breath hitched in her throat and Joel tensed a little at the sound. "Joel," she whispered, her voice a little shaky. "Don't move."
"Don't move? Why? What's happening? What's down here with me?" Joel asked, his voice growing more panicked by the second.
"Joel, you need to calm down. Don't worry. I'm going to get you out of there," Y/N assured him before disappearing from up above.
Joel looked up with a panicked look flashing across his face. "Robin?" he asked, his voice growing shaky as he felt his anxiety start to take over. "Oh, no. This is bad." His eyes locked onto Boy. "Oh, this is so bad." Boy began to bark and Joel's eyes widened, "Stop. Stop it! Shh. Stop it!"
He could hear the rustling of a creature at this point coming from one of the holes right in front of him. His hands shook a little as he turned his gaze towards the hole. "Robin?" he called out again. "Please, come back. Batman kind of needs his backup right now!"
The rustling suddenly grew silent and Joel froze, his eyes flickering over each of the holes before he felt the hair on the back of his neck stand on end. The sound was now coming from directly behind him and for a moment Joel felt as if he might pass out.
He didn't know why he did it, but Joel found himself turning to look at the very hole that the noise was coming out of. Before he knew what was happening a worm looking creature came lunging out at him and Joel had to quickly jump out of the way before its teeth could sink into his face.
Joel fell to the ground and against the pile of bones. "Robin!" Joel yelled out as he desperately grabbed ahold of one of the bones before getting back up onto his feet. He could hear the noises all around him now and his hands shook due to his own nerves. "Y/N!"
Then, right as a few of the monsters were about to jump out at him something fell from up above and wrapped around his hands. Joel let out a yell and tried to get whatever it was off of him, but stopped as soon as he got a closer look at it. It seemed it be—
"It's a rope, you numbskull!" a male voice yelled out causing Joel to blink in surprise before looking up. He could now see Y/N up above with a young girl and an older looking man.
"Joel!" Y/N exclaimed, her eyes wide with fear. "Put it around your foot and grab on! Hold on tight!"
Joel did as she said, his eyes widening as the worm creatures began piling out of the holes without hesitation. "Okay, come on! Hold on!" the man told him as he began pulling Joel up. "Pull up!"
Y/N was at the top with her crossbow in hand. Her breathing was heavy, her heart beating erratically in her chest as she started shooting at the creatures that got too close to the boy for her liking. As soon as Joel had grabbed ahold of the land up above, Y/N was pulling out her katanas and jumping over him in order to slice at the few worms that had managed to make it out.
The man pulled Joel further back and exclaimed, "You wanna look at 'em? Oh, shit! That girl of yours is slicing them up like their sushi!"
Joel managed to look up, his eyes locking onto Y/N as she sliced through each of the worms as if it were nothing. One flew by her, but the man pulled out a machete without hesitation and sliced through it, nodding towards Y/N who quickly returned it while the young girl ran over to the two with a small object in hand.
"Minnow, finish 'em off," the man said. The girl nodded and threw the object into the hole before grabbing ahold of Y/N’s hand and pulling her back.
"One, two, three, four and. . ." Minnow fell silent as an explosion rang out from below, throwing dirt and work guts up into the air. Joel's eyes widened as he realized it had been a grenade while Y/N began to grin.
"Are we. . ." Joel began only to get a chunk of worm guys tossed at his face. He hesitated and spat it away.
"Always count to five," Minnow told him while Y/N rushed past her and over to Joel. She knelt beside him on the ground and chuckled softly as she reached out to pull the worm guts away from his face. She tossed them to the side and Joel gave her a thankful look.
"You okay?" she whispered, her hand reaching out to gently rest upon his shoulder. Joel's eyes locked with her own for a moment before he nodded his head. Y/N let out a small sigh of relief and squeezed the boy's shoulder once before looking back towards Minnow and the man.
"Was that a samurai sword?" Joel asked, his eyes narrowing at the two strangers while he sat up and leaned closer to Y/N in an almost protective manner.
"Why'd you fall into a Sandgobbler's nest?" Minnow questioned.
"I didn't mean to, you know. I was just. . .I was walking," Joel replied.
"He wasn't paying attention," Y/N clarified, winking playfully at the boy as she pulled herself back up onto her feet and shoved her katanas into her backpack. "Too busy writing letters in his notebook to see the big hole in front of him."
"Hey!" Joel complained.
"What's your name?" the man asked.
"Y/N L/N," the girl replied with a soft smile.
"Joel," the boy replied. "Joel Dawson."
"I'm, uh, Clyde. This is Minnow," the man told them while Minnow gave them a small peace sign in greeting.
"You're lucky we weren't monsters. You were yelling like a girl," Minnow said as she gave a pointed look towards Joel. "Oh, this is bad! This is so bad!" she mimicked in a high squeaky voice.
"Okay, I don't sound like that. My voice is not that high-pitched," Joel insisted.
"Yeah, it is."
"Yes, it is."
"It was higher than mine, and I'm eight," Minnow commented.
Joel frowned and looked to Y/N who just looked away without saying anything. His frown deepened. "Robin," the boy complained. "You're supposed to be on my side."
"Robin? I thought your name was Y/N?" Minnow muttered.
"It is," Y/N replied before holding a hand out for Joel to take. The boy quickly grabbed ahold and she helped him to his feet.
"I just. . .I. . .uh. . .call her Robin," Joel explained, wiping the rest of the monster guts off of his shirt.
"What in God's name are you two doing up here alone anyway?" Clyde asked.
"We're not alone. We have each other and we've got Boy too," Joel insisted as he pointed towards the bush where Boy was currently hiding.
Both Minnow and Clyde were quick to raise their weapons in Boy's direction. "Woah! Hey! No!" Y/N exclaimed as she began running towards Boy.
"Oh, wait, no! No, wait, wait!" Joel cried out, his hands up in the air while he glanced back at Y/N who had now reached the dog. Boy was hiding in the bushes, but as soon as Y/N reached him, he was quick to hurry to her side where the girl began to pet him.
Minnow dropped her weapons almost immediately. "Oh, my God, it's a puppy!" she exclaimed happily. Y/N looked back at the young girl and smiled before gesturing for Boy to go ahead. The dog ran over to Minnow without hesitation and Y/N watched with a fond smile as the young girl began to pet the dog.
Y/N returned to Joel's side with a small sigh of relief while the boy ran a hand through his hair. He looked her way and muttered, "They almost killed our dog."
Our dog.
The words seemed to ring through his head almost instantly and he hesitated as he realized he had just referred to Boy as being their dog. However, a smile was already beginning to take over his features at the idea of Boy being their dog and Y/N was already smiling a little too, her eyes not leaving Boy and Minnow.
"I wouldn't have let them. No one hurts Bat-Hound on my watch," she whispered, her words making Joel smile even more.
"So, uh, what happened with your colony, man?" Clyde asked. "They kick you out?"
"No, I actually left on my own," Joel explained. "Something I had to do."
"And I followed him," Y/N added.
Clyde's eyes flickered over to Joel and he gave him a pointed look. "You stole food, didn't you?" he asked.
"He's a food stealer," Minnow said.
"Yeah," Clyde agreed.
"No, I didn't steal any food," Joel insisted.
"Right," Clyde muttered while Y/N tried to hold back her laughter. Joel nudged her side with his elbow and she just gave him an innocent smile that made him roll his eyes.
"Me and my colony were really close. Like family. Okay? They were super upset that we left. Y/N knows. Ask her," Joel told them.
The two looked to Y/N and she opened her mouth before saying, "He stole food."
Joel's eyes widened in surprise while Minnow held Boy closer and whispered, "I knew it." Y/N let out a loud laugh and leaned against Joel's shoulder while the boy pouted beside her.
"Oh, come on. I'm just messing with you, Dawson," Y/N insisted, winking at the boy and reaching up to fix his messy hair while he looked away with a small blush dusting his cheeks.
Everyone fell silent when a loud noise filled the air. Y/N instantly went rigid, her hands reaching out to grab the hilts of her katanas while she surveyed the area with narrowed eyes. Joel just looked around confused beside her while Clyde and Minnow both straightened up.
"Time to go, Minnow," Clyde said, nudging the girl softly. She quickly rose to her feet and began to walk after Clyde, the two walking away and leaving Y/N and Joel to share a small look.
"Time to go? Why?" Joel asked.
Y/N rolled her eyes. "Why?" she mimicked. "Did you not just hear the ominous noise that filled the air literally a couple of seconds ago? There's obviously a monster on our tracks."
Joel shot her a small look before gazing back in the direction of the noise. "So, what. . .What, uh. . .What was that? What's going on?" Joel asked as he looked back towards Clyde and Minnow who were still walking away. He quickly grabbed Y/N’s hand and dragged her along while Boy ran beside them.
"Could've been a lot of things," Clyde replied.
"Tree Flamer. Herd Stomper. Rockdiver. Limbsnapper. Limpcrusher. And my favorite. . .the Chumbler," Minnow listed off as they began to walk further into the woods.
"Okay, I get it. A lot of. . .A lot of names," Joel muttered.
"Whatever it is, it took your screams for the dinner bell," Clyde explained. "If it's got your scent, it's gonna be on you for a while."
"Shit," Y/N muttered seeing as that wasn't exactly the kind of news you wanted to hear on your journey on the surface. "I told you to stay calm."
"You left me," Joel retorted, pointing at the girl. "How was I not supposed to freak out?"
"I was trying to find you help," Y/N insisted. She looked towards the boy, her eyes locking with his. "I wouldn't have let anything hurt you." Joel watched her for a second, his shoulders relaxing a bit for he knew the girl was right. She never had let anything harm him.
Reaching out, he gently took ahold of her hand and gave it a small squeeze before looking to Clyde and Minnow. "Hey, maybe we could, like, I don't know, come with you guys?" Joel suggested.
Minnow and Clyde both stopped in their tracks before turning around to look at them. Joel was quick to wrap an arm around Y/N’s shoulder, giving the two a big smile while Y/N smiled softly beside him.
Clyde and Minnow looked between the two before glancing towards one another. "Which way you headed?" Clyde asked.
"West," Y/N replied.
"To the coast," Joel furthered. "Jenner Beach."
"Yeah. We're not cutting north just yet," Clyde agreed.
"Not cu—Not cutting north just yet," Joel muttered.
"Come on. Come on," Minnow told them.
Joel's eyes widened in surprise and he smiled before squeezing his arm around Y/N in a small hug of excitement. He then quickly cleared his throat before saying, "Uh. . .yeah. Whatever you want. You guys want us to come, we'll come."
Y/N chuckled softly and shook her head at the boy. "Come on, Batman," she muttered before hurrying after the two.
"Okay, but does my voice really sound like a girl?" Joel asked after her, hurrying behind her with Boy on his heels while Y/N’s laughter filled the air.
And with that, the two were on their way once again, this time with three new members than they had initially started out with.

On Your Six, Chapter 2
And thus we come to another day, another chapter.
Day 2: Stealing Hoodies for @taiqrowweek
Rating: T for this chapter, M for overall
Words: 3k
Summary: Qrow was what most of society would call a small-town criminal. But to those oppressed, he hoped only to be a healer. In an effort to make a change in the world, he moves from kingdom to kingdom, searching for branded omegas in need. His goal? To turn the derogatory words the reformatories forced them to bear on their skin into works of art.
Then one day, his past catches up to him in the form of Taiyang, his former best friend, with a brand of his own stained onto his skin and a plea for help in his eyes. Qrow has no choice but to answer, even if it means he’d have to face his mistakes once and for all.
[An ABO-style universe in a modern-day style Remnant. No Grimm, because people are the real monsters in this one]

~
Tai rolled in Sunday with a brisk breeze and a hint of last night’s rain following him. The awkward timidness he’d had, had evaporated quicker than the puddles outside, burned away into steely determination as he got right down to business. “Alright, so, how do you want me?”
Qrow nodded to his bed, the recliner having been pushed up alongside it. His kit was sitting on the nightstand. “Take off your shirt and lie down.”
“Gee, at least buy me dinner first.”
He supposed he walked right into that one.
“Hah. Let’s see if you have any jokes left after we pass the fourth hour.” He strode over to his chair, fetching a roll of paper towels on his way. “I told you we’d be at this for a while. Trust me, you’ll be glad to be in a more comfortable position.”
Qrow had calculated it. He’d have six sessions per letter. At eight to ten hours per session, he’d have a range of 48 to 60 hours per design. It seemed like a lot of time, but drawing on paper wasn’t quite the same as drawing on people. Paper didn’t need potty breaks, for example, and it tended to stay stationary the entire time. Add on to the fact this was easily the biggest project he’d ever undertaken, and he knew he was going to need every second he could get.
At least I won’t be enduring it alone, he thought as he watched Tai kick off his shoes and shirt and climb onto the bed. Qrow poured the alcohol onto one of the paper towels, and as he dabbed at the other’s skin, he noticed the face the other man was making. “Sorry, guess it’s a little strong.”
“It’s not that.” Tai said, rubbing his nose. “Uh, not to be your maid or anything but, you really need to wash your sheets.”
For a split second, Qrow was offended. Then the realization hit. “Oh. You’re smelling the ink.” He indicated the row of bottles organized in the case. The only one he’d need today, the black, was sitting next to his rotary machine. “I mix it with my own pheromones. It helps neutralize the stench.”
The omega reached for the little bottle, giving it a whiff. His eyebrows shot up and suddenly, he was staring at it like it held the meaning of life. “That’s… incredible. But won’t that give me away?”
“Not when your RO can’t smell her way out of a canteen.” They were all betas. Being the neutral dynamic meant there was no risk of ‘going soft’ on their parolee like an omega might, nor get over-protective like an alpha absolutely would. But it also meant that after Qrow finished relining the tattoos, the dramatic shift to Tai’s scent would be almost undetectable. “And if she does notice, just tell her you’re trying out a new perfume.”
“That smells like matchsticks and blueberries?”
“You’ll be fine. You’re good at improvising.”
As Tai eased himself back down, he finished sanitizing his back, then moved on to getting himself ready. He double-checked the machine, made sure the parts were in place and the wire running back to the outlet was untangled and slack. Taped the paper copy of the design over the edge of his nightstand and uncapped the ink bottle. “So, this is how this works.” Qrow said as he pulled on his gloves, “You need to be as still as possible. We’re gonna have a five-minute break every hour, give you a chance stretch and move around. We’ll stop a bit longer half way in or so to eat. But if you need me to stop for any other reason just let me know. And uh, fair warning – when I start tattooing over the letter itself, it’s gonna hurt like a bitch.”
Tai nodded. “Got it.”
“Okay.” He dipped the needle and turned on the pen, the quiet buzzing filling the room. “Here we go.”
The moment needle met skin, he felt muscle tense under his hand. Spotted the way Tai’s toes curled in his socks and his face screwed shut. Qrow continued on slowly as he looped one line from the top of the S and connected it to down the middle, then did it again from the bottom part of the S. By the time the S had turned into an 8, the omega had relaxed again, sighing softly. He took that as a sign to continue and started coloring in the new side.
Hour one passed in complete silence.
~
“So, how’s it looking?” Tai asked, swiveling his head around. If he tried any harder, he might become an owl.
Qrow watched him from the stove. “Most of the line art on the top is finished.” He turned on the burners for the kettle and pot of water. “Should be fine to get the rest done in a few hours.”
“I can’t believe how fast it’s going.”
“Yeah well, this is the easy part.” He opened the pantry, eyeing over the options. “Wait until we get to coloring. I have to switch between needles for shading and clean between them.”
There was a dragging noise as one of the dining room chairs was pulled back. “I’m sorry it’s so much work. We don’t have to do all that, if you don’t want.”
Qrow was grateful only his shelves could see his scowl. He breathed out slow, pulled down the pork-flavored ramen packets, saying casually as he went back to the stove, “I mean if you’re too scared to keep going…”
“I didn’t say that! I’m just trying to be nice.” Tai grumbled the last past.
I don’t need you to be nice to me! Frustration welled in him, but he forced it back down. Getting angry wasn’t going to help. Even if this extremely complacent, easily guilted Tai made him want to go out and burn down every Gods’ damned reformatory there was. “Forget about it. I’m too much of a perfectionist to half-ass my work anyways.” He tried to brush off. But now Tai had that kicked puppy look that told him he was feeling bad, which only made Qrow feel bad in turn, so he deflected instead, “I mean, unless it’s too much for you. You’ve been quiet. Is it hurting that bad?”
“Oh, no it’s fine. I, uh,” He rubbed the back of his neck. “Didn’t want to distract you.”
“You won’t.” He cracked the bags in half twice, tearing open the pack. “And it helps pass the time.” He dropped the ramen noodlesinto the water that was just starting to bubble and got the mugs down for tea, absolutely refusing to look at the other lest he read all over his face just how much he missed talking to him.
“Well… besides illegal tattooing in the tiniest apartment known to man on the shady side of town, what else have you been up to?”
The kettle was picked up just as it began to whistle. Like the cups filling with water, Qrow opened his mouth and let the words flow out just as easy.
~
As evening approached, another storm blew in. Rain drops smattered against the window every time the wind picked up, drowning out the noise of his pen. Qrow had rearranged his furniture, putting the recliner and nightstand in opposite positions so he could work on the lower half of the design in the 8. His focus was completely on the coastline coming to life over tanned skin.
“Remember that time we snuck out your window so we could put all those plastic rats on Professor Port’s porch for April Fool’s Day?”
Well, maybe not completely.
Qrow snickered. They had camped out in the bushes until dawn, just so they could take the TA’s picture when he came out to get his morning paper. “His face was priceless.”
“Not sure the punishment was worth it though.” Tai bemoaned.
“It was only a week’s detention.”
“For you. I got three month’s grounding on top of it.”
He reinked his pen. “Which you immediately broke by coming to my house every day.”
Tai took the brief pause as a chance to scratch his nose. “I never would have got caught if dad didn’t go home early that one time.”
“Ugh, don’t remind me. My ears are still ringing from that lecture.” He flipped back on the pen and continued working on the islands that would split the sea from the sky.
The omega cleared his throat, deepening his voice just enough it was an almost disturbingly perfect imitation of his father, “‘If you don’t want to land yourself into juvie, then you’ll stop leading my son into a life of delinquency.’”
Qrow grinned, continuing for him and really hamming it up, “’Don’t you know my delicate boy’s future depends on finding a proper and upstanding alpha?’”
“He didn’t say delicate.” But Tai was laughing with him.
“Might as well have.” It wouldn’t have been too off-base for the Xiao Longs. They’d always been the traditional, overbearing types, trying to jumpstart every little bit of their only son’s future in every possible avenue. When they’d been young, it always seemed like Tai was going to some lesson or appointment. Swimming. Woodworking. Jeet Kune Do. It had been so excessive it had given his own mother ideas – but at least she let Raven and him choose what they wanted to learn.
After looking through the primordial alpha courses, Raven had chosen fencing.
Qrow had wanted to go with her but there was nothing like that in the omega pamphlets he’d been given. In the end, he kicked his feet all the way to his first few art lessons.
His dad had been pretty ticked off they’d wasted the money when, a few years later, puberty had Qrow shooting up past six feet and presenting as an alpha.
But that was nothing compared to the nuclear war that went off when, just shortly after his fourteen birthday, the Xiao Longs discovered Tai was an omega. The lessons stopped and the strict rules started. No going out past seven o’ clock. No cursing. No dating. No kissing. No sex. And especially, no alphas in the house. Ever.
By the time Tai was fifteen, he’d already broken every single one of them.
Qrow, who hadn’t exactly been an angel himself, thought it was hilarious and maybe encouraged him a bit more than he should have. But honestly, what did anyone expect of either of them? After being caged in like a defenseless pup, he was finally allowed break free and be a little reckless. Meanwhile, Tai refused to be shoved into that same cage, smashing through the doors all on his own. They’d been quite a pair, back in the day.
Nostalgia hit him in a wave. “How are your folks doing these days?”
“They’re fine. Dad’s started a new garden. And Mom’s been talking about renovating the old cabin house we used to vacation at. Said it would be a good place for the girls to enjoy. I was gonna help but…” Tai trailed off, his eyes glazing over a bit. “They wrote to me a few times while I’d been…. yanno.”
Something bitter built in his chest. A long-forgotten fury that had weighed on him when his mother had likewise been ripped from their family to stay at a reformatory and the only comforts he’d got was from the Xiao Longs reassuring him she’d come back as a ‘better omega’. “I’m certain they were just bursting with encouragement and support.”
“Definitely isn’t winning any motivational speech awards.” He joked humorlessly.
There was a quiet lull. Qrow took it as a chance to re-ink and stretch out the crick stiffening his fingers.
As he lowered the needle once more, Tai spoke up, hesitant. “What about you? Heard from your family at all?”
He frowned, knowing there was only one of those two people he actually cared to hear about. He indulged him regardless. “Well, you know my old man. Probably still doesn’t even know I’m gone.” He tapped his pen down, drawing the m-shapes that were meant to be a couple of gulls flying away in the sky. “As for Raven, haven’t seen her for years. Not sure she could find me.” When he paused to survey his work, he couldn’t help but think that the shapes really could have been any birds. “Even if she could, doubt she’d want to.”
The kicked puppy look was back. “I’m sorry.”
“Not your fault.” Qrow lied, as if the last argument he and Raven ever had wasn’t entirely about Taiyang. But he didn’t need to know about that.
~
“You left? Raven you can’t leave!”
“Don’t growl at me. And anyways, what’s the problem?”
“The problem is Tai’s your mate. You guys have a daughter!”
“And that means I’m bound to him for life? We made a mistake! We were dumb kids. It happens.”
“So you just pack up your shit and tell him ‘good fucking luck’? He loves you! How can you act like that doesn’t matter?”
“…”
“Well?!”
“Really, little brother?”
“Wh-”
“If you want to go and play house with him, be my guest. But don’t project your feelings onto me. This is my life. My choice.”
“…Yeah. Yeah, I guess throwing people out of your life is a fucking choice. Just don’t be surprised when you get the same in return.”
“Are you seriously-”
“Get out. And until you get your head out of your ass, don’t bother coming back!”
~
Qrow taped down the bandage over Tai’s back, the antibiotic cream he’d spread along the new tattoo squishing against the adhesive. He ran through the aftercare steps almost subconsciously. “Keep this on until you go to bed. When you do take it off, wash it with warm water and soap. Do that a few times a day tomorrow and the next day too. If anything seems wrong, just call me.”
“Got it.” Tai reached for his shirt. At least he’d had the foresight to bring a button up. As he pulled it on, he gave Qrow a crooked little smile that made him look adorably boyish. “Same time next week then?”
“Uh, yeah.” He slipped off the bed, making a great show of looking for the other’s shoes. His cheeks felt a little less hot by the time he was returning to the bedside with them. “We’ll have to work on the U next. I’ll keep sending you designs, but a little direction would help.”
Tai slipped into his shoes, getting to his feet. “I don’t really have the eye for this kind of stuff. Just pick something easy.”
“Feel like I’m having a case of déjà vu here.” Qrow huffed, tapping a finger to the center of Tai’s chest. “This is your body Tai, not mine. So could you please put just a mite bit more effort into something you’re gonna have to wear the rest of your life?”
The other’s eyes widened before he looked away. He made an aborted motion towards his neck, fell short, and worried the corner edge of his collar between his fingers. “Could you do words?”
“Yeah.” He replied haltingly, taken aback by the sudden shift. “I’ll probably want to craft stencils to keep the script nice though – and no, it’s not hard.”
Tai nodded, another one of those not-quite smiles on his face. “Then I think I do know what I want for this one. I’ll send you some pictures later tonight.”
“Well… good! See was that so hard?”
“Immensely.” He answered, laying it on thick as honey.
Qrow jabbed him in the shoulder. “Don’t oversell it prima donna. You should start heading home, unless you’re planning on doing a rendition of Singing in the Rain out there.”
Tai spared a look to the window. “It’s really coming down out there, isn’t it?” The sky had darkened with the setting sun, making the already heavy clouds appear thick and ominous. Rain battered against his window at a continuous rate. The minute the omega left the complex, he was going to be soaked. “Think this’ll be okay?” He waved vaguely to his left shoulder where the tattoo began on the other side of.
“Mm, probably. But I guess a little extra cover wouldn’t hurt.” He crossed over to his little box of a closet, rummaging through the sparse selection. “This’ll work. It’s a bit oversized for me, so it should be perfect for you. Here.”
He snapped the black hoodie off its hanger, tossing it. Tai caught it. “You’re sure?”
“What are you gonna do to it? Dye it pink?”
“Well now that’s a thought. It’d match your eyes.”
“My eyes aren’t pink!”
Tai’s laughter was muffled in fabric as he gingerly slipped the hoodie on, being as mindful as possible of his back. By the time his head popped back out, his hair was all mussed up.
It was unfairly cute and Qrow tried very hard not to think about it as he walked him to the door.
Tai stepped into the hall, then paused, turning back to him. He reached out and placed a hand on his shoulder. “Hey uh, thank you. For all this. You have no idea how much this means to me.”
Qrow was pretty sure the touch was electric, because he was suddenly paralyzed. How he even got his jaw to work was a miracle in and of itself. “Don’t mention it.”
The omega hesitated, as if he wanted to argue, but only said, “Sure. I’ll see you soon Qrow.”
He wasn’t sure how long he stood there, but it was long after Tai had left the hall that he finally found the strength to close the door, slumping against the wood with a pitiful groan.
He thought he was over this. He should be over this. He wasn’t a lovesick teen anymore and this wasn’t a romantic comedy where after a bunch of wild, misleading antics, everything came together in the end. He’d lost his chance – twice over apparently. It was useless to try now.
So why did his stupid, pathetic heart still yearn?
“Come on Qrow.” He knocked his head against the door, hoping to rattle some sense into himself. “You did this for six years. You can do it again for six months.”
As he trod his way back to his bed, falling into it only to realize it smelt like Tai and would continue to every Sunday for weeks, he burrowed his head in his pillow and screamed.
Six was becoming a very unlucky number for him.

Agent O looked up from the report he was working on, trying to surreptitiously glance at the ghost in the van. One of the other agents had put a blanket on her—why did they have blankets in their ghost hunting van?—and she looked… cozy, for lack of a better word. Curled up even smaller than she already was, with the cape wrapped tight around her body, holding it tightly with her small fists, like she was afraid they might take it away from her otherwise.
Knowing what they had seen, where she had come from… O wouldn’t be surprised if it was a fear formed from experience.
She seemed stable enough for now, as long as she wasn’t using any of her powers. Which was good, because O wasn’t sure how they were supposed to stabilize her. When he’d promised to help her, he’d assumed that the scientists back at the base would know.
Hell, he hoped they knew. He’d promised, and knowing what she’d gone through, he would feel terrible going back on that promise now.
Looking down at the report again, he frowned. Turned back to the ghost. Cleared his throat to draw her attention. “Do you… have a name?” Was there any way to find out who these ghosts had been in life? To find out whether Masters had taken children and killed them, turned them into ghosts?
Were there parents, somewhere out there, whose child was gone and left behind the shade sitting opposite of O?
“Danielle,” she muttered, so quiet that O almost missed it. She repeated, a little more determinedly, “Danielle Phantom.”
And there it was again. Not only did she looked like Phantom, she used his name as a last name as well. How odd.
“Any relation to Phantom from Amity Park?” he asked. Had Masters somehow modeled her after Phantom? And if he had, would he have told her?
“Yeah, um.” She glanced away, eyes on her fidgeting hands. “He’s my… cousin.”
“Did Masters tell you that?” Agent L asked before O could work out an answer. “Or did you know that yourself?”
“I…” Danielle paused, clearly working through her answer. “I knew we were related,” she finally settled on. “But Daddy told me to call him my cousin.”
“And your brother?” O prodded, glaring at L over his glasses to get him to back off. “Did you know he was your brother for sure, or did Masters tell you that, too?”
Because it was undeniable that Danielle resembled Phantom more than just a little. Far more than what O would consider normal for humans. For ghosts, who could look like just about anything? It seemed suspect.
Was Phantom the first attempt? An escapee who wouldn’t listen to Masters? If he wanted another ghost just like Phantom, of course he would’ve prioritized her brother over her.
God, if only they had seen the other ghost before he’d destabilized. If he really had looked just like Phantom…
Well, it certainly had implications, didn’t it?
“No, I…” She frowned, then shook her head. “It’s different. We were all siblings, me and my brothers. Bones, Mo, Pixie… So of course he was, too, even if he never got to leave the incubator.”
“I see…” Bones, Mo, Pixie… those must’ve been the other ghosts near the mansion. Bones likely the skeletal ghost and Mo the muscular ghost, which meant that Pixie might’ve been the small one. “Your name seems a little strange, compared to theirs. How come?”
She shrugged, tugging the blankets further up, trying to curl away into it. “I… I was the only one who Daddy named. Bones, Mo, Pixie, we all picked their names. But Daddy called me Danielle…”
Her face crumpled, suddenly, somewhere between sad and outraged. “He didn’t even care about any of them! He only pretended to care about me! I— I—” The glow around her body brightened, the light visible through the blanket. Green coalesced around her clenched fists.
“Shh, shh, calm down,” O hushed, hands out and paused before putting them on her. “Danielle, you’re going to destabilize if you keep this up. Just calm down.”
“No!” she shouted back, her bright eyes snapping up to meet O’s eyes. “They’re all gone already! Nobody is going to care if I go to! Maybe—” The fire in her cut out as sudden as it had come. She sniffled, tears in her eyes. “Maybe we’ll get to reunite someplace else, someplace better.”
“Hey, shh, don’t talk like that.” O finally finished the motion he’d started, placing one hand on her shoulder. Damn this entire squad for being emotionally constipated. “Don’t look at it like that. Just think of it this way. You still remember your brothers, right, even though they’re gone? So as long as you still live, still remember them, they won’t be entirely gone.”
“Besides,” K cut in, finally. “This way, you can help us ensure that Masters gets punished properly, so he won’t ever be able to do what he did to you and your brothers. Don’t you want to help us with that?”
Her glow settled down, finally, as her expression grew determined. “Yeah,” she said. “Yeah, I would like to do that.”
O drew back, then threw a glance at the report he’d abandoned to the floor. Shook his head as he picked it up, then put it away properly, instead taking out a voice recorder. “Alright, how about we start with this then. You tell us everything you know. We can record it, and you won’t have to talk about any of it again if it hurts too much, okay?”
“Yeah, that sounds good.” She nodded, shifting her shoulders underneath the blanket like she was bracing herself. “Tell me where to start, please?”
---
“Danielle,” O said, disapprovingly, frowning at her. “You know the rules.”
“K said it was fine!” she immediately retorted, gesturing at her plate. Which was, of course, loaded with all kinds of sweets. Sometimes she maybe it rather easy to remember that her apparent age and her mental age didn’t quite line up right.
“Did he now?” O asked, raising an eyebrow at her. “So if I go over there right now and ask him…”
“No, don’t!” She grabbed onto the plate, holding it away from him. “L said I should, not K! But—”
Why was it always L? O made a mental note to speak to the man later, and then to talk to L’s partner M as well, just to be safe.
“Danielle,” he said, more patiently now. “I know you like the sweet things, but you need to eat properly, okay? You need to stay healthy.”
“But the ectoplasmic stuff is yucky.” She made a face, then jerked away when he stepped closer. “You can’t stop me from eating this!”
“Danielle,” O said, again, feeling his patience rapidly deplete. “You can have it after you’ve eaten all your regular food, okay?”
She narrowed her eyes at him, clearly considering it. Finally she heaved a deep sigh and put the plate back down onto the table. “Fine.”
“I’ll go and grab some from the kitchen, then.” He stepped past her, ruffling her hair on the way. “Behave yourself, or I’ll have P and Q watch over you next time.”
“Noooo,” she whined, sprawling over the table. “I’ll behave, I promise!”
O hummed thoughtfully. “You’d better, little lady.” And with a last wink to her, he left the room.
Time would tell whether she would actually listen or not. O wasn’t sure if it was proper parenting behavior but, to be fair, none of them were proper parents anyway.
Besides, what kind of parenting advice would apply to a young ghost, anyway? Danielle appeared to be about twelve, but her behavior often seemed to fit a child much younger, and she couldn’t remember a life before being a ghost, either.
At least they had managed to stabilize her. It took quite a bit of work to convince the scientists to help stabilize her, rather than experiment on her, but they had managed it. After all, Danielle had been one of their few captures, and her behavior was so complicated that it clearly required further research. Not to mention her similarities to Phantom. Subjecting her to regular research would’ve a waste, no?
O scoffed to himself. A waste, definitely, but not for any of those reasons.
Now all they needed to keep her stable was a steady diet of ectoplasmic contaminated food. And also some regular food, because Danielle burned through quite a bit of energy just by existing.
And boy, was she intent on doing more than just existing. They needed all Agents on base just to keep her safe and occupied sometimes. Over time it had just… somehow become standard fare for all of them. They were all living on base anyway, so why not help take care of the little ghost?
O shook his head to try and dislodge the thoughts and focus on what he was doing. With a resigned sigh he opened the designated Danielle fridge, peering over its contents to find something lunch-worthy. Ah! Sliced ham. Perfect.
Quickly, he set about making some sandwiches, letting his thoughts stray once more. Yes, somehow Danielle had become the base’s shared child. No one present among the Guys in White would dare to harm her anymore. The few scientists that had let their curiosity stray a little too far had been corrected and, when they refused to learn, got fired entirely.
Or, well. They weren’t around anymore, at least. O might be in charge of his team, but he wasn’t that high up. He assumed they must’ve gotten fired, but who knew with government organizations like theirs.
Either way, Danielle was safe among them. She was cared for, protected, and okay. They hadn’t gotten Masters locked away yet, building a perfect foolproof plan first, but he was under constant supervision. No other children would suffer, no other ghosts would be made by his hand.
And, soon enough, he would pay for what he had done.
O finished the sandwiches, cleaning up the supplies and carefully picking up the plate. Now, time to see if Danielle had behaved herself.
He stepped through the doorway, back into the room where he’d left Danielle. Quietly, he inched closer to the table, then put down the plate with sandwiches right between her hand and the plate with sweets.
“Busted,” she murmured, withdrawing her hand.
“Busted,” O echoed with a grin, drawing away the other plate. “Lunch first, Danielle.”
“I know, I know.” She sighed wearily, like it was a huge task, and pulled the sandwiches closer to herself. “But sweets after?”
“Eat all your lunch first, then we’ll see if you have space left.” He sat down opposite of her, the plate with sweets in front of him. “Who’s watching you after?”
“Agent K is,” she said around a bite of food. “Why?”
“Well, we wouldn’t want you to get sick while she’s watching you, would we?” O smiled down at her. If it had been L, he might’ve considered it. It would’ve been a good lesson for both Danielle and L, who had encouraged her. But K? She was a good Agent, and she took good care of Danielle.
O watched Danielle tuck a strand of black hair behind her ear, feeling… satisfied. Yes, they were taking pretty good care of her, all things considered. She’d stabilized, and her core had grown mature enough for her to develop her own unique powers. She was a fully grown ghost now, even if her mind remained young.
Still, he was curious to see if she would grow in body, too. One of the first unique powers she had developed was a minor shapeshifting ability, after all, allowing her to look perfectly human. Which made sense, according to the Agents on base, since Danielle was so human, and spent so much time around humans as well. Of course she would develop powers related to that.
It was perfectly possible that she would continue to develop her shapeshifting ability to allow her to look older as time passed. O would be curious to see it. To see what she would look like, fully grown.
And, yes. Sometimes he wondered if this was what Danielle had looked like before she’d died. If somewhere out there, there were parents who could look at her and know this was their child. But they didn’t know how long Masters had her, or any of the other ghosts. Didn’t know what happened to their parents.
For all they knew, Masters had taken only orphans, or had killed the parents and made them orphans. It was better not to worry about it, when there was nothing to be done about it anymore.
Danielle finished her sandwiches, then turned big, watery, blue eyes onto O. “Please?”
He sighed, then slid the plate with sweets back over to her. “If you get sick, it’ll be your own fault. And L’s.”
“Yes!” she cheered, taking the plate from him. “I’ll be careful, promise!”
“Uh huh,” he said, dry and unconvinced.
She started munching away on the sweets, scattering crumbs all over the table as well as her clothes. Mentally, O made a note to have someone clean the room later.
“Hey,” Danielle said, suddenly, lowering the piece of chocolate she’d been about to bite into. “O? Is there… any chance you guys might take me to Amity Park someday?”
Amity Park? Why?
Apparently he’d taken a moment too long to respond, because she quickly added, “Y’know, to meet my cousin?”
“I… I’ll talk to the others about it, see if we can manage something.” Right. Her cousin. Who they were hunting down for haunting Amity Park. Who might be another one of Masters’ victims, and who might be just as human as Danielle.
That Phantom.
Danielle grinned at him, bright and cheerful. “Thank you!”
O sighed, reaching over to ruffle her hair. “Don’t thank me just yet. I can’t promise anything, just that I’ll try.”
“So? I can thank you for trying, can’t I?” She patted his hand, then suddenly jumped out of her chair. “Oh! I’d better get going before K gets worried.”
“Go, then,” O said, waving her away. “And Danielle? Stay out of trouble.”
“Like K will let me get in trouble,” she answered, blowing a raspberry at him. “Bye, O!” she called back before rushing out of the room, running down one of the hallways.
He listened to her rapidly decreasing footsteps, then heaved a sigh.
Right. Time to look into Phantom and Amity Park once more.

Are you still there? /Part 6/
I sat quietly in our barrack in Camp Shanks, New York City. It was so surreal that tomorrow we would be going to set our foot out from our home country. It made all of this so sickeningly real
Skip who had just been laughing with Penk and Don, decided to plop next to me onto my bunk.
“Ahh!”
And in the process bump me onto the floor. The shocked look on his face was too hilarious. “Sorry, sorry, fuck sorry Bambi”, he mutters as he scurries up and helps me once again to plop next to him.
I giggle softly and shake my head. “Don’t worry Skip”,I pat his head gently as he too chuckles. Then he turns more serious and makes it clear that he wants to have a more private conversation. We both turn so that we are on our sides facing each other, with our hands under our heads like sleeping children. Luckily being private wasn’t that hard in the noise the men were making.
“you seemed pretty bummed about getting the pass to the city”, he starts softly. “I mean you don’t drink, and you usually spend the free time in the base anyway. I’m just curious to what was so special now?”, He finishes. I sigh. I could lie to him and make up a believable story about how I wanted to see the city before stepping out, or then I could be true to him the way he has always been to me.
“I was going to spend time with my husband”, I whisper. His eyes widen at my confession. “He’s here?”, he whispers urgently. I nod, my heart racing so hard it feels like it’s on run to my mouth. I gulp and reach into my shirt where lies a ring on a chain with my cross. And on the ring there is a small engraving of my husbands name.
I gently take the chain off and pass the ring to him. He takes a little time to inspect it and get his eyes work in the bad lighting. Then his eyes widen and mouth opens. I quickly jump up and slam my hand onto his mouth.
“What the hell are you two doing?”, comes the voice of George Luz. I turn sharply and grab my ring away from Skip. “Talking”, I answer quickly. He just raises his brows and blows out some smoke. Then makes a face and nods. I turn back to Skip with a serious expression and mouth: “No ONE”
He just grins and smiles. “Not gonna have my Bambi thrown to the wolves”, he says tenderly and boops my nose. I breath out and smile back. It felt good to let it out. Skip was so dear to me, it always felt so wrong to keep lying to him.
It also felt very odd to be sleeping with the men. I was now officially put into their barracks. Sink’s orders: “You’re familiar now, safe to start blending in.” And it was true, I felt more in touch with the men now. Even if Bill laughed at me because I was too scared to come down from the top bed of a bunk bed. Which lead to Bull gently lifting me down:
“There we go ma’am safely on the ground”
“Please, if I ever get a daughter, let them marry a gentleman with your manners”
I take a hold of Don’s watch and see it’s already 7.30. Shoot, I need to find Joe. “Joe!”, I shout and in my turn plop down onto his bed, like the true lady I am sitting with my posture perfect and ankles crossed.
“Ye ready to go, Bambi?”, he asks and I nod. He slowly gets up and stretches his back. “Well off with us then”. And so he starts singing once again. A strangely pleasant and soothing sound.
I had asked Joe to escort me to the officers barracks tonight. I wanted to see Dick before we leave. If this was the last time I saw him, I didn’t want it to be just a brief tender moment.
Once we made it to Dick’s barrack, he was already sitting on the steps with his garrison cap on and the dress greens too. I was still in my skirt, but the cap and the hobby jacket were long forgotten.
“Thank you, Joe”, Dick nods to Joe as a dismissal. “My pleasure lieutenant”, Joe smiles and takes off. I turn to my husband with a tender grin.
“I’ve missed you”, I whisper and put my hand on his abdomen. Just to soothe me that he’s actually there.
“We’ve been together most of the day”; he chuckles. I shake my head still smiling. “Not like we used to be”, I whisper a little strained. His brows furrow as he brushes my hair behind me ear. He then sighs and cups my face kissing me longingly.
His lips are always so, so warm and soft. The warmth and softness wasn’t the concrete feeling maybe, but it was the feeling that brushed my heart. I didn’t notice the tears streaming down my face before he pulled back. My hands were still around his waist, and his now cupping my neck.
“Don’t cry, darling, not right now”, he whispers and kisses my tears away gently. “We should probably go a little further, someone could walk here any minute”, he then adds.
I nod and give him a small kiss onto his adam’s apple, before moving to grasp his arm. Moments like this reminded me so much of our first meeting, well first time we actually got the words out of our mouths.
3rd of May 1936
It was an early morning as Sonja Savolainen was smiling and singing in front of a group of young girls who were singing along with her. They all had their hymnals and catechisms out and smiles on their faces.
Sonja was only 18 and now substituting her aunt as a Sunday school teacher. She was a young, timid girl with a sharp head on her shoulders. Teaching the small girls during the Sunday service was something she thrived on. She was always very lonely with the people her age, not really having the will to socialize, the courage chat and having a strange accent to go and to top that a strong interest in education and research, had quickly left her the odd one out.
Her mother had always said that she is too curious for her own good, but Sonja never saw it as a flaw. She wanted to learn more about everything, and she dreamed of a husband who would support her and be ready to built a whole corner of the world just for them.
She was as pure and proper as a young lady could be. She worked hard in her parents farm, she rarely cursed and tutored children. All in all, she was a kind human being. But with the standards she set for herself, she ended up being self-destructive.
“Alright, alright, children. We can sing more next week, I will still be here. Ms. Miller will come back soon, I promise”, she grins. All the eight girls were so sweet, and such dedicated little things. There was this one girl Lena, who had hard time reading, but Sonja promised to tutor her on Friday nights while she still was in Lancaster. In a months time she would be going back to Ham Lake, Minnesota.
Slowly the girls get picked up by their parents. Sonja getting numerous hugs from the children and thanks from grateful mothers and fathers. And bless Lena’s mother who had brought her a small piece of raisin bread as thanks for her teaching.
Now only ones left in the room were Sonja and small six-year-old Ann Winters. “Ann, darling, isn’t your mother picking you up?”,Sonja asks softly and kneels next to the still brightly smiling girl. Ann cutely shows her teeth as she giggles. “No, Ms.Sonja. my big brother will come though, he’s probybly lost.” Sonja smiles and almost giggles at the way the girl pronounces probably.
“Well we shall wait for him, I’ll stay with you until he finds his way. Maybe you can draw him a map for the next time?”,she chuckles.
“ohh, It can be like a treasure map, ‘cept the treasure is me”, Ann giggles making Sonja’s heart warm with her adorable little idea.
“What a sweet treasure you are”, she says and taps the little girls nose. Their chat is interrupted by a knock on the door. Sonja quickly rises and goes to open it.
“Hello, you...m-must be Ann’s brother”, Sonja almost whispers the last part as she looks at the man before her. There stands a tall, red-headed man with the softest blue eyes. Sonja bites her lip, he was stunning.
Richard almost as red as his hair, as he looks at the woman. He was never the most confident with girls and he hadn’t expected his sister’s Sunday school teacher to be a pretty young lady.
“I-I am, ma’am. Richard Winters”, he says and offers his hand. Sonja takes it smiling softly “Sonja Savolainen, please come in”, she almost whispers again. His hand is so warm and big, in contrast to her own small and as her brother said it, delicate, but chubby hands.
Ann almost screams as she sees Richard. Richard grins and helps his sister get dressed and takes her catechism for safety keeping. “Dick, imma make you a big big map, and you will find big big me!”, she giggles enthusiastically. Sonja’s heart pumps so fast as she looks at the man. He is so calm so soothing, at least from the five seconds she’s interacted with him.
“Forgive me ma’am for keeping you waiting, is there anything I could help with?”, he asks as he takes Ann’s hand and tries to keep her from jumping to the roof. Sonja really can’t stop her heart from jumping like Ann.
“oh, no no , Ann is a very well behaved girl. It was a pleasure”,she says and starts to gather her own things. “off you two go, I can manage”, she finishes. Richard smiles at her softly. His own heart beating so fast that he cannot get the words to of “thank you, truly” out from his mouth.
“Goo’bye Ms.Sonja!” Ann says and waves. Richard smiles and offers his free hand to shake again. “Thank you ma’am, we-we will probably see each other again”, he gulps. Sonja bites her lip again and takes his hand.
“Lets hope so”, she says and then blushes blood red. Why did she have to say that. My god, why did she have to be so forward. Richard takes one look at her warm chocolate eyes again, nods and then takes off with his little sister.
The moment their eyes had met, their souls were bound.
Present
I grin stupidly at the memory. We finally find a dark corner where we can sit and talk in peace. We take a seat on this big rock with our arms still wrapped together.
“You alright?”, he whispers as he looks at my grin. I nod and cup his cheek with my free hand. “You seem to be awfully in your head tonight”, he then adds.
“Just thinking of you”, I answer and giggle as he still after all this years manages to blush. “Do you think that the lot we were looking at could be free in a couple years?”, I suddenly ask. He shrugs.
“If we get enough money from here, we can start making an offer”, he says quietly. “But we still need some money to built the house, so we’d still have to live in the barn.” I can see the pain in his eyes as he says those words.
I smile at him tenderly now stroking his brow and take his garrison cap off. “I don’t really care, the barracks are even more uncomfortable. And in the barn I’ll have you”, I try to soothe. He smiles a little strained as he seems too to be deep in thought.
“I did carry you over that threshold”, he says. I give him a sound kiss. “yes, you did”, I grin.
Then his face turns grim. “And next time I carried you we were both covered in your blood”, he swallows. My grin fades and the tears try to gather again. I shake my head and kiss him softly again. I leave my face so close to his that our noses are touching. “I’m still here, Richie, and no one is taking me away”, I whisper. He presses his forehead against mine strongly and closes his eyes.
He then presses his lips to mine with urgency. He maneuvers me so that I’m sitting sideways on his lap, his hands firmly supporting my waist. I deepen the kiss and press as close to him as physically possible with our clothing on. His other hand goes to cup the back of my head as I tangle my hands into his fire red hair.
It feels so good to kiss him, to feel his arms around me. But it’s torture, because I want him, I need him. And this was only stoking the already existing fire.
When he pulls away I can see his pained face.
“I-I need you, but I can’t do this. Not like this”, he says his voice rough, his bedroom voice. I can feel him against me. It all makes me so needy that I almost feel ashamed. It would, if I didn’t love this man as a part of my soul.
And that’s how we sit. For an hour and a half. Trying to calm ourselves, softly talking, kissing and praying.

The perfect gift
Christmas was flooding the air in Tokyo, people making their last minute shoppings before celebrate the holidays, in the Kamata Crafters’ workshop, their members were having a good time while they were preparing everything to receive the Shinjuku Summoners to their Christmas party, mostly because Jutaro wanted to celebrate the holidays with both guilds, the crafters were enjoying the daytime before the party decorating the workshop...well...except for one crafter.
Hephaestus was in his lab having one of his ramblings about his insecurities, mostly for the Cristmas gift he made to his lover, at first he was happy with the gift, but now he became insecure and sad after some pondering about the gift...and himself.
“What I was thinking?!...I got carried away by my filthy feelings!!...Mama deserves only perfection!!...not something like this!!...not someone...like me...“
He kept like this until someone came, his android Talos was worried for his creator, wanting to help his father to light up his emotional weight.
“Creator, are you alright? do you need something, maybe some hot cocoa to calm yourself a little?...“
“Leave me alone! I don’t want your pity!“
“But...“
The android offers his hand to help him in some way, but Hephaestus rejected his help once again.
“I told you Leave Me Alone!!!“
after hear that order again, Talos obeys silently and closes the door, he leans his back against the wall and cries in silence while says some words quietly, words he wanted to tell to his creator.
“but Papa...today is Christmas...and is supposed to be a happy day to us...a happy day to you...“
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nightime falls over Tokyo and the crafters finished with the necessary things to start the party, the only thing was missing were the guests that would come in some minutes, then someone knocks the workshop’s door, Talos opens it and welcomes the summoners to the party, the summoners greet them while they were holding some gifts and snacks for the party.
“Merry Christmas!“
after come in to the living room, the summoners and crafters were having a good time, the younger summoners and Salomon were playing with Vritra and petting the modified dragon, at change for the petting, Vritra was making some tricks to get snacks, Tvastar was getting Moritaka some nervous because he was asking to him if he could give him some genetic material to further investigations, Amatsumara was chatting with Kengo and Gullinbursti about how get more defined muscles while the old man was showing off his biceps and muscle gut, Kurogane and Shiro were chatting while Shiro was showing to him his D-Evils, the youngest crafter was amazed by such little creatures, Ryota and Talos were serving some eggnog to the guests and enjoying a conversation about why Ryota sings so messed up songs in Christmas, Toji and Takemaru were talking about invite Toji to his Oni’s reunions with Motosumi and Oniwaka, Talos was still a little sad for his father because of the earlier berating, meanwhile Jutaro and Hephaestus were having a time alone in the kitchen, Hephaestus was checking the timer in oven while the summoners’ guild master was admiring his profile in silence, he notices Heph was some sad.
“Heph, are you ok? you look a little gloom now“
“i-it’s ok Mama...nothing happens“
“Hephaestus...if there’s something wrong, please tell me, I’m always at your side when you need me...“
Hephaestus blushes when his lover takes his hand and tells him those gentle words...he stays silent until the oven’s timer chimes signaling the time to turn off the oven, Talos approaches to them to see if they need some help.
“Creator, you need help with the oven?“
“I’m Ok, I can handle this...“
Hephaestus answers plainly while he opens the oven to take out a tray with the main dish of the party... a honey-glazed ham, the crafter takes the tray with his bare hands shocking his lover and the android by that reckless act.
“C-creator!! what are you doing, that tray was at least 200 Celsius degrees! it could have caused a severe burn in your hands!“
“Hephaestus, are you crazy?! that was so reckless!! you could have hurt yourself!“
The crafter was leaving the ham in the kitchen’s bar without notice Talos or Jutaro were startled until he sees them face to face.
“eh?...s-sorry for that, but high temperatures doesn’t affect me at all, I’m used to it, see?“
Hephaestus shows his hands unscathed with just a slight reddish tone in his hands indicating it was a dim burn.
Jutaro asks Talos to bring something to cool down the burn and some bandages, after tie the bandages in Hephaestus’ hands, the summoner lectures his lover for his recklessness.
“Heph, that scared me a lot! did you ever thought how I would feel if you hurt yourself like that? “
“but M-Mama, I said I’m used to it, this is nothing to me!“
“even if you said so! I don’t like when you get hurt!, you should be more considerate with yourself!!“
their little discussion was heard by their friends making them feel some awkward, both lovers stay silent and blush because of shame, after that silence, Jutaro is the first one to break the ice.
“A-anyways, I only ask you to be more careful, at least do it for me...please?“
“O-ok, Mama...s-sorry for have scared you...and t-thanks for heal me...“
after their little quarrel, Hephaestus takes the ham to the table, having at his mind the idea he didn’t deserve the kindness and love from Jutaro.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was 10:00 pm, the dinner was hearty and hefty to the guests, to make the digestion lighter, the guests were playing some board games or charades between guilds, but the summoners splited in two teams: younger team and main team to keep it balanced with crafter team, Hephaestus retires to his lab for a moment to pick up the gift to put it under the christmas tree, he’s still insecure about it until his lover asks him something.
“Hephaestus, will you not going to play with us?“
“s-sorry, Mama, I’m not very good at charades, I’ll wait for another game, I guess...“
“ok...hey! is that my christmas gift?“
“DON’T LOOK AT IT! “
“sorry, I was just curious“
“excuse me for yelling you, Mama...I-“
Hephaestus was interrupted by Takemaru’s voice calling them aloud.
“Hey, you two, lovebirds! will both of you keep like that or you will come to play?“
“come, Heph! let’s play!“
“But...“
Jutaro takes his hand and pulls him to the rest of the guests to play, after a long charades’ round finishing in a draw between summoners’ younger team and crafters’ team, it was time to open the christmas presents.
“OK, boys! I think it’s time to open the presents! but we will do it with a raffle“
Amatsumara took a box filled with balls, every ball had a number, the idea was about who takes a ball with certain number, that would be its turn to give its present to its chosen person.
the first ones to give a present were Salomon, Agyo and Kurogane while last ones were Talos, Hephaestus and Jutaro, Salomon had chosen Talos to give him a book, a fantasy novel that was getting trendy in Tokyo, Agyo gave Shiro a kokeshi doll with Shiro's face and smaller dolls shaped like his D-Evils, Kurogane gave to his grandpa a new kettlebell weight, after almost all the guests had received their present, it was Hephaestus’ turn to give his gift.
the crafter was very nervous about his christmas gift, he felt it wasn’t the perfect gift he wanted to his lover.
“my c-christmas gift i-is to...“
his hands were trembling as his voice, his eyes were showing concern and his face was getting red, Talos approaches to him concerned.
“Creator, are you ok? you need something?“
“I CAN’T , IT’S NOT PERFECT!! I’M SORRY JUTARO, BUT I CAN’T GIVE YOU THIS TRASH AS YOUR GIFT!!“
Hephaestus runs with his christmas gift toward outside the workshop directing himself to the college, Talos and Jutaro tries to stop him but he dissappears from their sight, both guilds were looking for him while the younger summoner stayed at the workshop to don’t expose them to the snowstorm, after a half-hour, nobody could find him, even with his large physique, he was skilled in hide from others, meanwhile Hephaestus was still running until fall face down because of a hidden stone in the snow, the gift slips from his hands anf falls into the snow, he reaches his hand to take the box worried, but after some seconds pondering about why he made this gift and considered it trash, he curls up in the snow and cries under a tree in the college’s west courtyard.
after some time looking for him, Jutaro and Talos find him thanks to the flame in Hephaestus’ right eye as a signal, he was in fetal position holding the gift and crying.
“Hephaestus?“
“M-Mama?“
Hephaestus rise his torso from the snow to seat over his knees, Jutaro bends his knees to look at him face to face, then, he slaps him leaving a mark of his hand in the cheek to later berate him while sobbing.
“what did I told you?! I don’t like when you get reckless!! why did you do this?!“
Hephaestus looks at him crying, it made him feel bad with himself, and gives his answer ashamed.
“I- I got carried by my filthy feelings when I made this gift...I w-was afraid that you would reject it...because is a trash like me...you deserve only perfect gifts, because you give me your love and kindness, and I feel that I don’t deserve them!...you deserve a better me, like Talos!!”
after hear those words, Jutaro slaps him again
“I’m tired of that thing...do you know how I feel when you say you’re trash?! I feel so terrible because I feel I haven’t done anything to help you!!...I love you because I know you will be at my side always!! you’re not a trash as you say!! you’re gentle, noble, brave, a wonderful man to me!... you would never abandon me...and neither I would abandon you! I love you because you have a wonderful heart! you don’t have to do anything to deserve my love, because you already did it!...the only thing I ask you is to love yourself at least a little more to don’t say again you’re a trash!...you’re the only one I can call my lover, so please, don’t say you’re filthy again, your feelings are truly pure as your heart, you’re not filthy, you’re perfect to me...”
“J-Jutaro...I...“
the summoner hugs him tightly to make him feel better leaning his face in the crafter’s chest feeling it’s body warmth, a soothing warmth, Hephaestus feels surprised at first to then feel comfort leaning his face in his lovers’ hair, Talos watches them while he keeps them warm with his heat, after stay like this for some minutes, they proceed to come back to the workshop, but Jutaro slips and hurts his ankle because of a puddle made from melted snow when Talos was keeping them warm, the summoner almost falls to the ground but a pair of strong arms stops his fall, Hephaestus holds his lover like a princess, Jutaro observes him for some seconds admiring his manly features and his gentle golden eyes, the summoner blushes, uttering something in a quiet tone.
“you're so gallant...“
“w-what did you said?“
“n-nothing...“
Hephaestus carries Jutaro in his arms because of the hurt ankle, when they come back, Hephaestus was lectured by his guildmates while he attended Jutaro’s swollen ankle, after that, Hepheastus gives him his christmas gift shyly.
“M-Merry Christmas, Mama...“
Jutaro takes it and opens the box, there are two things inside, one was a tablet made by Hephaestus, the summoner was amazed when Heph told him he made it, but the other gift was getting the crafter more nervous.
“No! don’t turn it on!“
It was too late, Jutaro opens it and finds a small projector, he turns it on, the projector showed a virtual snowglobe with images of a mermaid holding a child in her hands in a hug, then the image changes to Hephaestus and Jutaro dancing like a couple while sounds a music box-like tune, Hephaestus blushes and hides behind a wall, but Jutaro goes with him with the projector still on.
“Hephaestus, did you really made this?“
“y-yes...“
“I love it...a lot...thank you“
Jutaro kisses him in his cheek and takes his hand to give him his present, Hephaestus opens the large box with care, inside there was a fine tailcoat tailored to his size, including a plegable top hat, a fine cape and a walking cane, Jutaro started to explain why he gave him a tailcoat.
“I-I thought you would look very handsome in a tailcoat...so I asked Arachne to design it for you as a payment for a favor I made to her before, but if you don’t like it...“
“N-No, I really like it...I mean it...thank you..“
both are silent until Amatsumara interrupts them
“If you really like it, wear it now, at least to please your boyfriend...“
“OLD MAN!! what are you saying?!“
Hephaestus blushes embarrassed until he notices his lover was blushing too to what Amatsumara said...after see him like that, in a sudden act of courage, he goes to his room with his gift in hands, after some minutes he comes back completely dressed with his new outfit.
“H-How do I look, Mama? you like it?“
Jutaro was astonished, looking to his lover with gleaming eyes and having a slight nose bleeding while smiles with excitement, Hephaestus looked so elegant and ravishing in his tailcoat, like a gentleman from past times.
“Could you please...stay like this for the rest of the party?“
when Hephaestus hear his request, he took Jutaro’s hand like a gentleman and kisses it delicately.
“A-As you wish...my lover..."
Takemaru grins and shouts a request to his brother a little drunk by the spiked eggnog.
“Hey, phantom of Kamata! sing for us!“
“you’re ruining the moment, Takemaru!!“
he keeps upset by the oni’s request until he feels a little pull from his lover to pay him attention and asking another thing quietly equally shy.
“at least one song, please?“
Hephaestus sighs and pleases his lover, he takes position and asks Talos to play an according tune to the season, the android plays “Silent Night” while Hephaestus takes some air to show again his hidden talent blushing, the guests were silent until he finished his song, Jutaro took his phone to record his lover's performance in video, then a round of applauses sound to his performance, Hephaestus bows to the guests still blushing, but glad that his little performance was liked by everybody.
The party is over and the summoners comes back to their dormitory, Jutaro stays a little longer because he was kissing his gentleman before say goodbye, Hephaestus says goodbye to him taking off his top hat and bowing to him courteously, the summoner blushes to his act and gives him a last kiss, the crafter goes to his room and looks to himself in the mirror admiring his new tailcoat and turning himself to see his cape move, Talos opens the door with a gift in his hands.
“Talos...what are you doing here?“
“I wanted to give you this, Creator“
Talos gives him the little box, the crafter opens it revealing a golden flame-shaped boutonniere made by the robot.
“you made it?“
“yes, creator...It may look a little rough because is my first craft...“
Hephaestus pins the boutonniere in the jacket’s lapel, complementing the outfit nicely.
“I like it...thank you...but...why you haven’t call me Papa during the day?“
Talos was surprised by that question, and responds ashamed.
“you looked very upset at daytime, and I believed if I called you Papa...that would make you angry...“
“I see...I’m very sorry, it wasn’t my intention to yell to you...I wasn’t aware how you felt before...you just wanted to help me...I'm truly sorry..."
Talos embrace him tightly and smiles again.
“It’s Ok, Papa! I know you would come back to be yourself again...the gentle and lovely papa you are...and I love... "
“Merry Christmas, Talos...and sorry for what I did before“
“Merry Christmas...Papa”

Word Count: 2738
Warnings: Mason being an adorable little asshole
Pairing: Natasha x Reader
(pt.1 pt.2 pt.3 pt.4 pt.5 pt.6)
I can do this, you think as you decide to take the stairs up to your 9th floor apartment. She’s just a kid.
My kid.
It shouldn’t bother you as much as it does. You’ve co-parented Mason for five years. You literally grew her and pushed her out of your body. So why were you so nervous to have to parent her alone for a few days?
Because you’re not okay, your mind tells you, but you ignore it. You’re fine. Everything is fine.
You want to run away, but it’s fine.
And as you open the door to your apartment and see Mason drawing, you don’t want to run away anymore. You haven’t gotten to spend alone time with her since- well, it doesn’t matter. You missed hanging out with her and having some alone time.
So you make the best of it.
It’s not as bad as you thought it would be. She helps you make meals. Well, she bosses you around (like her mother, you think) while you do the work. You play, you watch movies, you have sleepovers. One night you even made a fort.
“What’s the password?” Mason questions you from her spot in the fort.
The very same fort you built and she kicked you out of.
“I love you,” you offer.
“No! Try again,” she giggles. “I love you, too,” she quickly whispers after only a moment’s hesitation. Much better.
“I have pizza,” you offer again. She sticks her head out just enough to catch you in your lie before hiding once again.
“Mommy is a better liar.”
Well, she’s got you there.
“Is it…” you look around, hoping to find some clue as to what the password could be. In truth, you think she’s just making it up as she goes. She spends enough time with Nat that it wouldn’t surprise you.
“Hurry hurry!”
“I need a hint,” you practically beg, really trying to ham it up. “Pretty please?” Mason may be just like Nat, but she has a few of your qualities.
One of which is that she’s a sucker.
“I’ll make a deal,” Mason says as she sticks her little hand out of the fort. “Pay the entrance fee.”
Where did she even learn this shit?
“Name your price.”
“10 pieces of chocolate,” she says while wiggling tiny, always sticky fingers.
“That’s too high, three,” you counter.
“Nine.”
“Two.”
“You’re going the wrong way!” Mason giggles and finally sticks her head out of the fort.
“I’ll give you five,” you tease as you lean forward and touch your forehead to hers, scrunching your nose when she laughs even harder. “Take it or leave it.”
“No deal!” She practically screams, and you flinch back from the noise.
The scream of metal twisting in ways it shouldn’t. The team in your ears, your own screams deafening as you-
“-Momma?”
Your eyes shoot open and you look into Mason’s green ones, and you’re home again. Not on the mission, not trapped, just home. Your daughter is right there, looking at you, and you just have to reach out and touch her.
“I’m sorry,” you whisper. It’s not enough. You know it’s not enough.
“It’s okay,” she says softly before leaning forward and giving you a sticky kiss on the forehead. It’s gross. You love it.
You’re okay. You’re fine. You have to be fine.
Natasha is set to return on a Sunday. Mason had woken up early, far too early for anyone to wake up on a Sunday, but she wanted to get started on breakfast. We can’t let mommy come home to no breakfast, can we? Yes. Yes you can.
But you get up anyway and let your daughter boss you around about what breakfast should be made: eggs, toast, pancakes, waffles, bacon, oatmeal, coffee, tea, chocolate milk, the list goes on. It’s as if she thinks Nat has never had breakfast in her life. You both know Nat only ever just eats fruit.
Hell, Mason even put the leftover Thai food out.
She was definitely Nat’s child.
You’re desperately trying to listen to Mason talk about her dreams while also not getting distracted and burning the bacon when someone knocks at the door. Who would be knocking so early?
Nat had a key.
Before you can stop her, Mason runs to the door calling for Nat. You don’t think she’s old enough to understand your wife can get in if she wants. It’s a rush to move the bacon and turn the stove off so you can stop Mason from opening the door for a possible stranger.
“Uncle Nick!” Mason cries, and you can hear her giggling.
And you hear your heart stop.
Nick doesn’t come over unannounced.
You aren’t sure if you want to go greet him at the door. Nothing good comes from unannounced visits, especially not from Nick. Who does he think he is to show up when he knows Nat is away on a mission.
She’s on a mission. She’s fine. You’re fine.
“Don’t say it,” you whisper when you make it to the kitchen entry and see Nick holding Mason.
“Say what?” He asks, looking straight at you.
“Don’t,” you say even quieter, if it was even possible.
“Is mommy home?” Mason asks, and you give Nick a look. A look that says you’ll kill him if he tells your daughter that something happened to Nat.
Nothing happened to Nat. She’s fine. You’re fine.
“It’ll be a little longer, kid,” Nick says. “But she sent you a gift.”
He puts her down and hands her a small box of chocolates that he got from his pocket. Mason cheers and runs off to the kitchen to open the box. Her sweet tooth was too big for her to ask if they wanted a piece.
“Y/N-”
“I said don’t, Nick,” you say, more forceful now that Mason is slightly out of earshot.
“She’s fine,” Nick says. He reaches out to you but you step back. “It’s safer to extend the mission than to pull her out now.”
She’s fine. You’re fine. Everything is fine.
“You would tell me,” you shoot back. “Right?”
“I would tell you,” he confirms, and you nod and invite him to breakfast.
He wouldn’t lie. He couldn’t lie.
What was supposed to be a short, few day mission ends up going past two months. In that time you have to manage taking care of Mason, getting her to school, doing your work, training agents. You worry about Nat the whole time and feel on edge every time someone comes up to you at work.
Maybe that’s how Nat felt when you died. But you were fine.
Maybe throughout the time, when Mason can’t see, you break down. Maybe you cry in the shower because you’re scared and the water agitates your cybernetics that Tony says are flawless. And maybe you can’t sleep because you have nightmares, about dying, about Nat, about Mason.
But you’re okay. You’re fine.
And you’re absolutely fine when Mason says she doesn’t feel good and asks if she can go to work with you.
That’s fine, too.
You know she’s lying. She always bites her lip when she lies. But she’s your daughter; if she asked you to steal the moon, you would do it. So you help her pack a day bag and get her in the car.
When you look in the rear view mirror, you can see her practically bouncing in her seat. At least she’s happy.
Her purple Hawkeye backpack is bigger than she is when she puts it on. You have to fake a cough to hide the laughter as you reach out for her to hold your hand. She grabs it eagerly and you both walk into the Compound and head to your office.
It’s nothing fancy, just a small office. As a “higher up,” you at least get a semi-private office, but it still made you claustrophobic. Not that it mattered because you were fine. And you were even more fine when Mason sat at the little desk you had against a wall.
A desk just for her.
You know she’s going to cause trouble. You can feel it in your bones. She’s too quiet while you fill out paperwork, and every now and then you hear her giggle. But when you look over at her, she’s just colouring.
Why was she so suspicious?
“Hey boss,” you hear, and you look over to see Luke standing in the doorway. “Hey Little Boss,” he says soon after with a wink at Mason.
“Hi, Uncle Luke!” Mason calls and tries to wink back, but she used both eyes. Well. It’s the thought that counts.
“Need something?” You asked as you leaned back in your chair, trying not to groan as your skin stretched over the augmentations.
You were fine.
“Mind if I take Little Boss with me on a few errands?” He asks. The way Mason practically jumps up leads to more suspicion.
But you see her smile, and how can you tell her “no?”
“Please don’t teach my daughter bad things,” you plead, but you know it’s useless. She was raised around the Avengers, after all.
“I’ll keep him out of trouble,” Mason says with a serious look on her face. You gesture for her to come closer and give her a quick kiss on the head before shooing the both of them out of your office.
And once they’re gone, all hell breaks loose and everyone knows it’s your fault.
It starts when Tony stops by your office only half an hour after Mason and Luke ran off. You didn’t have to ask what happened when you see Tony with damp, pink hair.
“I’m sorry,” you say even though you want to laugh until you can’t breathe.
“She’s evil,” is all he says before walking back out. You can’t argue with him.
The next disaster happens 15 minutes later. You were trying to brew some more coffee to try and fight your nightmare-induced fatigue when you hear someone clear their throat behind you. You have to bite your cheek to keep from smiling.
“New friendship bracelets?” You ask as your eyes land on Bucky’s and Clint’s hands.
“Who gave her handcuffs?” Bucky asks as he holds his wrist up, forcing Clint’s hand to follow.
“Did you ask her?” You shoot back.
“She was too busy running away laughing,” Clint grumbles, but you can see the blush creep up his neck when Bucky’s hand grazes his own.
“You’re handcuffed to an assassin, Clint,” you say softly, “have him pick the lock.”
“We’re not done talking about this,” Clint says as he pulls Bucky away to take care of their problem. Maybe while Bucky picks the lock, they’ll take care of all that sexual tension between them.
It only gets worse as the morning goes on. Two of your agents come up to you with tears in their eyes and donuts in their hands. Apparently the donuts had been filled with mayonnaise.
Bruce comes to your office with his hands stuck to a hand sanitizer bottle. One that was now filled with clear glue instead of sanitizer.
Nick came to you with half an oreo in his hand. An oreo that smelled suspiciously of mint toothpaste.
Your personal favourite was the screams of agents that was soon followed by the overwhelming smell of Febreze. When you looked out your door, four empty, zip-tied Febreze cans were piled outside.
When Mason walked back into your office with a guiltless grin, you wanted to have her explain. You knew you should tell her that she can’t just prank everyone at work just because she wanted to.
But it made the day… interesting.
What harm was there in a few little pranks, right?
“Don’t tell me about it,” you say as you hand her the sandwich you had made for lunch. “I need to be able to claim plausible deniability.”
“What’s that?” Mason asks as she scrunches her nose and takes a bite of her sandwich.
“It means I can keep you out of trouble,” you tease before kissing her scrunched nose and eating your own sandwich.
You teased each other as you munched on your small lunch. Sometimes you would steal a chip from her pile, other times she would reach over and “steal” a bite of your sandwich. At one point she ended up tossing grapes at you and laughing when you couldn’t catch them.
It was just… mundane. You were okay.
“Busy?”
Both you and Mason turn to the door to see Maria standing there, arms crossed over her chest. As usual. She looks as professional as always and you can definitely see why Nat used to have a crush on her.
“Hi, Auntie M,” Mason says around a mouthful of sandwich.
“Hi, Little M,” Maria shoots back with a small smile.
“Whatcha need?” You ask as you set the last few bites of your sandwich down and wipe your hands off on a napkin. Normally you would use your pants, but Mason doesn’t need to learn that habit.
“Nat’s jet is landing soon,” Maria says. She keeps eye contact with you. It’s comforting.
“Mommy’s home?” Mason asks. She drops her sandwich when she stands up and rushes out the door as your heart races.
“Mason wait!” You call and run after her, but she’s got a good start.
You hate when she runs off.
“Mason stop!” You shout after skidding around a corner and seeing Mason still heading toward the hangar. She doesn’t answer you, and she definitely doesn’t stop.
How was she faster than you?
How was she in better shape than you??
You jumped off the stairs to the hangar to try and land in front of Mason, but the landing jars you too much and you groan and fall to your knees. Good as new, you think cynically to yourself, what a load of bullshit. Tony was going to get an earful later.
The jet had already landed and Steve walked out as you managed to push yourself back up to your feet. You’re almost desperate to see Nat, but you feel a million times better when you see Mason jump into your wife’s arms.
She’s okay. You’re okay.
You walk the rest of the way, stopping just far enough away that Nat can’t touch you. It makes you want to cry that you’re worried about touching your own wife. But you’ve hurt her, you died, you can’t just pretend like everything is fine.
Even though it is fine. You’re fine.
Instead you stand there and cross your arms defensively over your chest. At least Mason is happy, and Nat looks happy to be home. They’re both chatting and laughing and smiling and that’s all you want. And you wait patiently until Nat looks up and locks eyes with you.
And it’s like everything around you disappears. You get the same feeling you had when you first saw her, and your palms get sweaty and your mouth is dry. It’s like nothing ever happened, nothing had gone wrong, you were just the happy family you used to be.
But you see that pain in her eyes. There’s a desperation that you only recognise because you’ve seen it in the mirror. And you know you’re going to have to talk about it, and you’re going to have a lot of talks about it. But you can see that she knows it, too.
Maybe that’s a start. But that’s okay. That’s fine.
So you step forward and wrap your arms around the both of them. Nat doesn’t stiffen like she has since you came back. No, this time she melts into you and you swear you hear her whimper, almost inaudibly. So you squeeze them tighter because you won’t hurt them again.
You pull back just enough to look at her, and only then are you so bold. Leaning down enough to kiss her, sighing into the feeling that you had missed more than life itself. That feeling of home.
“Gross,” Mason teases, and you feel Nat smile against your lips before pulling back and giving Mason a kiss on the nose.
“Any after-mission-requests?” You ask, and Nat just looks at you for a moment with teary eyes that she blinks back.
“I want to go home.”
And you both smile.
“Home sounds good.”

Chapter three
TRIGGER WARNING:
- MENTIONS OF DEATH
- VIOLENCE
I love you all, enjoy.
"remember the sorting hat ceremony bubba?" i ask draco, interrupting his boring lecture. he grunts, ending his sentence.
"asshole, but yeah, i do. what about it?" he mutters the beginning, gradually getting louder.
"i don't know, i just want to go back. i miss it." i huff, laying my head on draco's lap.
"but we still go to this school? what do you mean?" he pets my hair gently, making sure not to pull on it.
"i don't know. i guess i want to go back in time, before everything went in the gutter." my eyes well up with tears which i pat away with my palms.
draco lifts me off his lap into his arms, holding me tightly. i quickly wipe my tears on his clothed shoulder. i sit back up. draco takes my chin in between his index finger and thumb, staring into my eyes. his soft lips meet my cheek, cooling my nerves. i let out a prolonged sigh, eyes closing shut.
"it's over now annie, you're safe know. i'll never leave your side. promise." draco holds out his pinky finger, i take it in mine. our foreheads meet, resting against each other.
"sorry i got your shirt all wet." i sniffle waiting for draco to reply.
"i wasn't gonna say anything because you're sad, but yeah, pretty gross." we share a low chuckle, draco pokes at my side. i squirm myself off his lap, falling to the floor. draco only points his finger and laughs.
"you are so mean! ugh, why do i have to live with you?" i shout from the floor, draco holding out his hand to pick me up.
"well, i have to go to potions, and you need to get yourself to herbology. walking with me or not annie?" he slides his robes on, waiting for an answer.
"yeah, i'll walk with you. but only because you have no other friends." i stick my tongue out at him, face contorting in a confused manner.
"says you! i'm your only friend you prune," he remarks stubbornly. "and for your information, i have blaise, and- um..." draco trails off while i collect my belongings for class. i shake my head at him, chuckling to myself. i hear a subtle knock on the door. my eye rests against the peephole.
"hey mister popular, astoria greena- i mean uh astoria greengrass. she's behind the door, waiting for you."
"oh! i didn't know she was stopping by." he scrambles to ruffle out his hair. my eyes roll to the back of my head out of disgust. astoria greenass has draco wrapped around her finger.
the pair met when they were put together for a potions project last year. he was amazed by her beauty, and fell head over heels in love with her. this is what i assume, of course. they have been inseparable since. i'm not sure why, but i really really hate astoria.
"your hair looks fine bubba." i say, peeking my head out of the bathroom where i was hiding from the devil herself.
"don't call me bubba! astoria is here!" he whisper-shouts, opening the door for astoria. draco's pale complexion lights up when he sees astoria's. i feel a wave of heat flows down my spine. her presence ignites a strong fire inside of me.
astoria is wearing her robe, tie, and her long brown locks are tied with a emerald colored ribbon. i don't know why draco fancies astoria to such extent. although, her lack of personality and gorgeous genes are probably enough for him.
"pepperpup! i missed you so much!" draco engulfs her into a hug, astoria wrapping her arms around his shoulders.
"aw i missed you as well babe." she replies, kissing his cheek softly. i notice draco's face turn beet red when her lips touch his upper jaw bone.
"babe? i didn't know you guys were snogging! good thing draco got headgear when he did." i wittily interrupt. their heads whip around towards the couch, huffing at my comment.
"we're no-"
"indeed we are. we have been for a month today." she grins, pulling draco into her arms for the second time today. draco's face goes blank, his eyes glued to my hands. which were fiddling with the snake ring on my left middle finger.
"oh really? that's so cool! i'm thrilled for you both," i manage to mutter out, counting down from fifty in my head to control my growing rage. "anyway, i have to go to class. have a good day you two. i'll see you tomorrow for the quidditch game." i quickly gather my bag and sprint out the door, slamming it behind me.
(ONE HOUR AND FORTY-SEVEN MINUTES LATER)
"are you feeling alright darling? you look, sickly." my friend aera asks. her hand caresses mine in a soothing manner, snapping me back into reality.
"yeah! i'm good. wanna grab something to eat? i'm starving." aera's fingers stop and her face holds an unconvinced look. aera is far too intelligent to believe my lies.
"do you think i'm a bloody imbecile? i insist you tell me what dilemma you are facing this instance." she states, all whilst lacing her shoes to go to dinner.
"no i don't, but there is nothing wrong with me aera. really." she raises her eyebrow quizzically. her alluring eyes stare deeply into my soul, searching for the truth. aera's head slowly turns as the rest of her body goes still.
"fine! draco and astoria are dating but i hate her stupid brat face! ugh, i hate her so much!" i scream, allowing anyone in the common room to hear.
"divulge me in your problems. toni, why do you loathe her to such extent?"
"i literally have no idea. maybe because draco is obsessed with her, and is a dickhead to me when she is around. or because draco calls her pepperpup, god that's so stupid. pepperpup, like she's a fucking dog. i'm sorry, excuse my language, they just make me so angry!" my feelings pour out into the world while i scream my lungs out. aera just stays silent and nods her head, waiting for me to finish.
"thank you for sharing with me. let's head to dinner." she takes my hand in hers and leads me to the great hall, which is jam-packed full of ravenous students.
"can we eat in your dorm? i don't want to sit by him tonight." i ask, hiding my face in the beanie i'm wearing.
"i'm afraid not hun. besides, i have a date tonight. goodbye!" with that, aera is gone like the wind. just like that i'm standing by myself in the middle of the great hall.
i try my best to be discreet while getting my dinner plate. ham, carrots, a bun and some mash are what i grab to eat. after gathering my food, i eat it as fast as possible making sure not to draw attention to myself. i hear blaise call my name, meaning draco was near. i turn my head to the person next to me, pretending to be in a conversation.
as i'm trying to 'converse' with the girl next to me, i feel a harsh tap on my shoulder. i look up to find blaise zabini roughly tapping me, signaling for me to sit with them. them being blaise, pansy, astoria, and draco.
"nettie! come on and sit with us mate! draco won't stop asking for you." he mumbles the last part so only i could hear. i shrug, pick up my plate and walk over to the group. draco's glum expression lights up, his eyes filling with joy.
"nice to see you again antoinette! we were just chatting about the quidditch game tomorrow. ravenclaw versus slytherin! should be a good one." astoria states, her bright smile never dropping. i ball my fist when i hear my full name come out of her mouth.
"don't ever call me antoniette you dumb bitch!" i shout, standing up from my seat. my hand nearly collides with her face, but someone's hand stops it. draco's eyes bore into mine, telling me to calm down. i let my hand fall back to my side, the same angry expression plasters my face.
"i-i'm sorry, i didn't know! i swear!" astoria cries, pansy holding her tightly. the disappointed face on pansy grows.
"if you didn't know, maybe you could have fucking asked! did you not notice the fact that nobody around calls me fucking antoinette!?! jesus christ astoria, are you that fucking stupid!?!" i scream, tears spilling from astoria's eyes. i feel like i could punch a hole into the earth with my one fist.
"oh my god toni, take a rest. you sound fucking crazy." blaise says calmly, only fueling my fire more. i hate that word, hate it. draco knows that. i tilt my head to the side, thinking of all the ways i could kill everyone at this table. draco clears his throat, finally stepping in.
"annie, let's go to our room. i'm growing very sleepy. come on darling." he takes my hand in his, but i pull back from him.
"are you fucking joking? i will tie your brain stem to your shoe laces, you stupid fucking idiot. god, why are you friends with such brain dead morons? call me crazy again zabini, do it. i dare you. come on, little bitch, do it! i'll kill yo-" draco looks at me again, signaling that he needs me to leave with him.
"what, you can't take being called crazy? astoria didn't know any better! what, are you mental?"
"blaise, enough! i can't believe how fucking childish you're being right now. fucking prick." draco shouts at him, blaise flinching at his harsh words. i'm already halfway across the great hall, taking my plate with me. draco runs to catch up with me, not looking behind himself once.
(12 MINUTES LATER)
"annie, you okay in there? i'm sorry about what blaise said. it was out of hand." draco knocks on the door gently. three knocks. just like mum. i hate when he does that.
i'm crying when draco started knocking on the bathroom door. i quickly wipe my eyes and let myself out. i sit down on the satin green couch.
"i'm completely fine draco. it was my fault. i'm a horrible monster, just like mother said." i state calmly, grabbing my wand polish. draco shakes his head and sits down next to me.
"don't be like that annie. don't try to hide your feelings from me." he takes the wand polish from my hand. i give my attention to him, which i know is what he wanted.
"she didn't deserve that. i know she didn't mean any harm. she's a real sweetheart. i'm just an asshole." i admit, twirling a piece of hair between my fingers.
"you're not an asshole, annie. you can't control it. i know that, they don't."
"that's beside the point. i'm a bad person. that's the truth and it always fucking will be. astoria did nothing wrong." i get up, pacing around the room.
"she triggered you, whether she meant it or not." draco grumbles, pulling his hair loosely.
"it's fine. it's over now. i'm going back to my room." i get up and head out.
"annie, don't go. we need to talk." he mumbles, standing up from his spot on the couch.
"draco there's nothing to talk about. you and astoria are dating, you didn't tell me, and your friends are douches. goodnight." and with that, i'm out of the door, heading to my own room.
(14 MINUTES LATER)
after taking off my school clothes i run a bath for myself. i grab the bath salts i bought from hogsmeade and sprinkle some in. i let the lavender scented salts absorb me completely, taking in the fragrance.
after the water is warm enough, i gently slide into the tub. the water relaxing my tense muscles. a long sigh leaves my mouth as i lather soap onto my body. once i rinse it off, i submerge myself under the water, making my body feel still and peaceful.
peace. something i never get to feel. water is peaceful. so calm and tranquil. maybe if i drown myself, the water will let me be peaceful. that's a good idea. death will make me peaceful. i want it so fucking badly. but i will never will.

Of Being a Ladybug part 2
So, Paris is about 6 hours ahead of Metropolis . So if Marinette sent the message at say… 8 pm, and Jagged got it at 9 because he was at dinner, then getting lawyers straightened out and all that ...say Marinette starts school at 10 am, then it would be approximately 4am in Metropolis. It would be a 7 hour flight, meaning she'd leave at noon on Monday, and arrive at 2am on Tuesday.
The cons of being a reporter.
TUESDAY 2AM Paris
Lois was as excited as she was exhausted. Paris! She'd always wanted to go to Paris. As her taxi drove her past the Louvre and she could see the Eiffel tower in the distance, she couldn't help but remember the call she received yesterday.
"I know it's early, Lois, but I have a job for you in Paris" Bruce said from the other line.
"I'm listening."
"The satellites from the Tower have been picking up irregularities. Burning buildings, the Eiffel Tower toppled or completely missing, then the next pass everything is normal. Hal even claims he saw a giant baby on cams once. I've gone over all the pictures of the last year, a couple of weeks ago there… I can't explain it. I'll send you the images and we'll try to find a believable cover story for going in the middle of the school year like this"
"I understand, thank you Bruce. I'll book the earliest flight I can." Burning buildings? The Eiffel tower toppled? Nothing had been said in the news. If something on a grand scale like that were happening, they would already know.
"Thank you, Lois. I will of course pay for your accommodations while there," Bruce offered. A consolation for sending her around the globe for film effects.
She barely got a "thank you" out, before he hung up. She flopped back onto the bed, Clark raising an eyebrow at her. Of course he'd heard both sides of the conversation, so he obviously had his own opinion to share.
"Well? What do you think?" she asked him. If Clark gave it some weight, she might take it more seriously.
"A video was sent by the Mayor of Paris about a year ago, asking for help because his city was being overrun by stone monsters and their only hope lay with a couple of kids. I watched it and it looked like some cheap special effects and deleted it like the other publicity stunts people pull. Diana was the one to notice the inconsistencies with the Eiffel tower, and she swears she saw a couple kids flying on rooftops. It's why Bruce started investigating. But he has no reason to be in Paris at all, since Wayne Enterprises doesn't have an hq there, and he wants to save that excuse for if there IS any trouble. Anyways, try to enjoy your little vacation while you're there" Clark smiled.
"... Does Bruce know the mayor called for Justice League intervention?" Lois asked slowly. This… Was… Not… happening.
"No? I mean, just some publicity stunts, Lois. We get 20 of them a day" Clark dismissed. Lois was beyond words so she got up and started packing, and turned on her civilian phone to call for a flight. Before she could get dialing she got a call incoming.
"Penny? Is everything okay? WHAT? YES! Of course I do! That's huge! Yes, let me just call my boss…. Oh? Oh wow! Thank you! Yes, I'll see you tonight… Or I guess tomorrow for you…yes. I understand. Thank you" Lois couldn't believe her luck. She grabbed her JL phone and called Bruce.
"Bruce! I've got a cover! I've been asked by an old college friend to interview her client and a few others on Parisian TV. Yes, totally legit, she just called me… Penny Rolling. Yes, yes Bruce! I will keep my eyes open. Did you know the Mayor tried to call for JL intervention a year ago? No? Clark told me there was a video but thought it was a publicity stunt. Maybe try to find it and give me a heads up… okay… Thank you Bruce. That'll be perfect! I'll get to the bottom of this… Okay, thank you."
Finally done with the update she rushed to call the airline.
" NOON?!"
Before she could take in the breathtaking view any longer, the cab stopped. Lois paid the fare and stepped out and looked up. It was a beautiful hotel, owned by Mayor Bourgeois. The cabbie was loading her bags onto a trolley with a Bellhop waiting stoically by the doors. Just as Lois went to inquire about Penny, the door opened and out she came.
"You cut your hair!" Lois exclaimed, giving her friend a hug and a LA Bise.
"You, my beautiful ginger, are late! Had you arrived a few hours earlier you would have had quite the show!" Penny said with a smile. She'd always been jealous of Lois's hair.
"It's Paris, Penny. How exciting could it possibly be?" Lois asked jokingly, wondering just what her visit here would truly reveal.
I was going to end it here, but I believe I owe you all an action scene 😉
MONDAY 10AM PARIS
Ladybug flew over buildings in the direction of the explosions. She really wished she'd had a chance to see the classroom before leaving to see if she would have to once again go up against Alya. Or Lila.
Maybe if she was lucky it would be another unfortunate soul altogether. One she hopefully didn't know personally. Because it was starting to really take a toll on Ladybug, every time she came face to face with a friend or loved one.
Before she was ready she was at the scene. And she was shocked. The Akuma of the day was a barely visible outline of a woman. She had a flowy garment on and only became visible when she touched a person. The person would immediately admit to bad deeds, anything from finishing the ice cream container to more horrible crimes.
Ladybug watched as a couple hid behind a vehicle to escape the fate, only for the akuma to lift and throw the car, one handed, into another vehicle, creating another explosion. The akuma drifted ghost like towards the couple and became fully corporeal as she touched them, first the man ("I tapped your phone! I hated how much time you spent always going out!" he blurted out) then the woman ("I can't stand being with you!" she screamed back). Ladybug swallowed. This was not good. A non corporeal being with the strength of ten men and the ability to… Spill secrets? Ladybug wasn't sure, but didn't want to get too close before she had the full story. She went to grab her yo-yo to call Chat, only for him to pop up, baton swinging.
"What have we here? Another scary movie victim?" Chat asked, drawing all eyes to them. Ladybug wanted to scream. Or toss him off the building. Once! Just. ONCE!
"I… am Guilty Conscience. That voice that should tell you not to do bad… It Is too quiet in most people's heads. So therefore I shall make you scream your misdeeds to the world. No longer shall there be hiding behind white lies for innocence" the ghost whispered, yet to Ladybug she may as well have screamed.
"Che, you're out of your league! I have a picture perfect record!" Chat smirked, ever brash and fearless. Without a second thought, he jumped off the building towards the ghostly form. And just as Ladybug predicted, went right through her. She did not become solid upon contact with a human unless she so chose to. Great…
"Chat! Fall back, we need a plan!" Ladybug called, stepping back from the roof and readying her yo-yo.
"Just lucky charm her and we can go out for coffee!" Chat yelled back, swinging his baton uselessly through GC. Ladybug shook her head. She was almost 90% sure they'd need more backup.
"Lucky Charm!" she cried, throwing her yo-yo high. Down fell a teapot. Back up it is, she sighed.
"Chat! Fall back, I'm going for backup!" she called out again.
"Awe, but M'lady, I thought I was the only one you needed in your life!" she was sure he thought he sounded charming. She cringed.
"Not now Chat. I'll be back in a while, keep her from following me but keep your distance. No need to waste your energy for now."
Had she looked down, or paid more attention to her surroundings, she may have seen Lila hiding in an alley not far from the akuma. She may have noticed her trying to follow her. She may even have taken another route to get where she was going. Later she would regret not being more vigilant.

Magic in the Air: Chapter 5
Description: Patton offers to help. That’s all he’s really ever wanted to do. Help his friends. But will that eventually lead to a mess that he wasn’t prepared for?
Pairings: roceit, analogical, intruality, platonic DRLAMP
Warnings: food mention, blood mention, slightly gorey image mention (please let me know if I missed anything or if you want something tagged)

“Watch out!”
The yell came from the living room and at the sound, Patton instinctively ducked (quack), biting his lip as a book slammed into the kitchen wall behind him. He had been doing a lot of that recently…ducking that is. With Roman, Virgil, and Dee all working on their magic over the past few weeks, the household had become a bit of a chaotic mess.
“Sorry, Padre.” Roman apologized coming into the kitchen to grab the book. “You ok?”
“Perfectly dandy, Ro.” Patton grinned, standing up and patting Roman on the back. Roman returned the smile and hurried back to the living room when Logan called his name.
“Hello, Patton.” A smooth voice greeted from the front doorway. Dee made his way into the kitchen to stand next to Patton and sighed gazing int the living room. “How is our favorite prince doing today?”
After Roman had gained a little more confidence, he had started having his lessons separate from Dee once again in order to make the best of all of their schedules. Needless to say, their schedules had become a bit hectic ever since everybody started gaining magic all of a sudden. Even Remus and Patton were swamped with trying to help Logan in his experiments, keep up with their own class schedules and being there for the three struggling with controlling their magic.
“I think he’s doing great. Only one book flew in here today, so that’s a bonus!” Patton cheered, smiling at Dee.
“Oh?” Dee purred letting a soft grin inch its way onto his face. “How marvelous.” Patton nodded in agreement, looking toward the living room where Roman had six things hovering in the air.
“That’s the most he’s gotten to, right?” Patton asked as Roman started moving the things in a circle in the air. It looked like he was juggling without actually touching anything. He’d been working really hard to get that part right. Since he had had his magic a bit longer than the others and now knew a bit more about his limits thanks to…what had happened, he had really mastered just floating the objects and had moved on to rotating them, moving them, and adding more objects. It was amazing to see him improving rather fast, even if he sometimes still lost control of an object or two. After he had set the objects down, he glanced into the kitchen and spotted Dee. With a quick word to Logan, he ran over and jumped at his boyfriend. Dee let out a little oomph as he caught Roman and supported his weight while the actor wrapped his legs around Dee’s waist.
“Did you see, Dee?” He gasped, like an excited child. “I got six objects up this time.”
“I saw, my prince. You did amazing!” Dee encouraged, pecking Roman on the nose.
“I’d say you’re actually improving quite quickly Roman.” Logan chimed in from where he’d come to stand at the doorway of the kitchen. Roman smiled gratefully at him as he finally released Dee.
“Thanks, Lo.”
“I’m only speaking the truth.” Logan replied, smirking softly as Roman blushed at the compliment. As Logan opened his mouth to continue, a heavy thumping on the staircase drew all of their attention.
“Logan, we’re gonna be late for class! You said you’d come get me ten minutes before we had to leave.” Virgil panicked as he rushed suddenly downstairs and headed toward the door. Surprised, Logan checked his watch and cursed under his breath.
“Great job today Roman. Don’t forget that you and Dee have tomorrow off because I have to help Virgil make one of the backgrounds for the play.” Logan reminded as he grabbed his bag and quickly followed Virgil to the door. Patton smiled after them, giggling at how obvious it was that they were dating. They hadn’t outright said it yet, but it wasn’t hard to tell. He knew that Dee knew as well from the knowing looks he kept giving the two. It was great that they got to work in at least one of the same classes together. With Logan being in Theater Design and Technology and Virgil being in Stagecraft, they often worked together on projects for the school’s major productions too. In fact, all of the others were also pursuing careers in theatre: Dee in costume designing, Remus in stage makeup, and Roman in acting. However, Patton himself was majoring in Dance. Sometimes he was a bit sad that he was the only one that never got to help in the production of the plays, but he at least got to help Roman when he was auditioning for a musical and needed help with the dances. Plus, Remus often helped him practice his partnered dances since he had always been interested in the subject. Speaking of Remus…
“Has anyone seen Remus? I have something he needs for his makeup class.” Patton remembered.
“I think he was in his room last I saw him.” Roman answered as he began to get the ingredients to make himself a sandwich.
“Would you like a sandwich Pat?” he offered, looking up.
“Aw, thanks kiddo! That’d be great! Could you make one for Remus too? I don’t think he’s come out of his room all day, so he probably hasn’t eaten.”
“Sure, but I am not adding sardines to his ham sandwich this time. He wants those he can get them himself.”
Patton giggled softly before heading upstairs to get the makeup brushes he had for Remus. He had borrowed them to do his makeup for a costumed dance routine he had to do for class last week and kept forgetting to give them back, but Remus could only last so long making up excuses for why he didn’t have his makeup brushes in a makeup class. He was getting ready to knock on Remus’s door when he heard angry muttering from the other side. Slightly worried, he hesitantly knocked on the door anyway.
“Remus? Kiddo? Roman made some sandwiches for lunch if you want to come and eat” he called. The muttering fell silent but there was no answer.
“Um, Are you ok?” Patton asked hesitantly.
“’M fine.” Remus responded, sounding unconvincing. His answer was much quieter than usual and there was a slight waver to his voice.
“I’m coming in, ok?”
When there was no answer, Patton took that as an ok and cautiously opened the door.
Remus was slumped over at his desk, his head resting on a piece of artwork of a girl with half of her face completely covered in tiny cracks that branched out and bled into the rest of her face and down into her neck…like a china doll that had been dropped and shattered, just on the verge of breaking completely. It was haunting but still beautiful, and though it wasn’t Patton’s type of art, he could still admire the talent and work that went into it.
“That’s beautiful, Remus.” He complimented, still gazing at how intricate the cracks were drawn. Remus snapped his head up and stared at Patton then looked back to his drawing.
“You think?” he asked, chewing his lip as he studied the picture.
“Yeah, of course! The cracks in the face are so intricate and you did her hair so nicely and the way the fractures kinda start to bleed into the rest of her face but fade off. It’s really great. You did amazing.”
“It was gonna be my project for my makeup class. I was gonna add some blood seeping from the cracks and not paint her face so it’d look like an actual fractured human face instead of just a cracked doll and everything! I mean, a cracked china doll is so overdone, right? This way, it’ll look much cooler and probably be a lot creepier. And a bit more gory, with the blood and flesh and stuff.” Remus ranted, smiling at the thought. Patton tried not to grimace at the concept. It really was very cool…just not his type of thing.
“What changed? Did you find a better project to do?” Patton asked noticing that Remus’s smile faded at the question.
“My professor said that it wasn’t possible for someone with my skillset to get it perfected in time and recommended I pick an easier design.”
“What? But that doesn’t make any sense. You’re not going to learn new skills if you don’t challenge yourself. I mean you are in the class to improve your skillset.”
Remus was silent for a minute before speaking again.
“So…you don’t think I have the skillset either?” he asked quietly.
“Wh—No, Remus. That’s not what I meant. Not at all. I actually think this is right up your alley. I’m sure you’d do amazing. I’m just saying even if that’s what he believes, he should still let you do the project. So what if its challenging? You’re there to learn aren’t you? And if you want to push yourself so you can grow, I think he should encourage that not turn you away from it.” Patton pointed out. Remus smiled, but it still seemed too sad for Patton’s taste.
“What if you did it anyway?” he suggested. Remus’s grin suddenly turned mischievous as he raised an eyebrow.
“Patton are you suggesting that I disobey authority? I never thought I’d see the day.” He gasped dramatically. Patton flushed bright red as he slapped Remus’s shoulder playfully.
“I-I just think that if you do it and perfect it anyway, then you can prove it to him that he was wrong.” Patton defended “But this isn’t worth a lot of your grade or anything right? Because it might be best if you don’t test your professor when you can fail the whole class because of it.”
“No, of course not. It’s just a little project.” Remus replied, waving it off and looking away. Patton raised an eyebrow at his suspicious reaction but shrugged it off as Remus continued.
“I need a subject to practice it on though. None of my classmates like to be my subject anymore.” He pouted.
“Well, I could be your subject if you like.” Patton offered.
“You—You will? But this—I mean, this isn’t usually your thing.”
“It’s not but it still looks really cool, and you always help me with my dance routines. It’s the least I could do.”
“Ok, then. Thanks Patty Cakes!” Remus grinned. Patton nodded, hiding a blush.
“Anytime. Now let’s go get those sandwiches.”

Good Fortune (Soulmate AU) Chapter 14: Games
In the coming weeks of March going into April, there had come the next wave, the next vital stage of his attentions and the days that Angel had started to look forward to the most. These were nothing like the voices in her head, the phantom hands stroking her skin, or the experience of finding him on her favorite TV channel. Angel had spent such time these days simply pining after him, waiting for him to worm his way back into her mind, distract her, take her away from all her worries and doubts. To tell the truth, this wasn’t much different from the days of before, all those days spent patrolling the TV for the Derry Children’s Hour and all the time she spent sleeping in the hopes of stumbling across those delicious dreams once more, but now that she had tasted the true sweetness of his presence, there was simply no turning back now. Yes, Angel had truly experienced something she’d never had the pleasure of experiencing before, that is, the love and touch of another living, breathing thing, and now she wanted more. She wanted more, and knowing that the time was ripe to do so, Pennywise was more than delighted to offer it to her. It had begun one warm April afternoon, when the Losers had come to bless Angel with their blithesome, whimsical company. A conversation about the perils and pitfalls of pre-pubescent life at school eventually dissolved into listless boredom, and then Angel had saved the day with a simple deck of cards. They took to it immediately, all sitting in a circle around the coffee table. It was Angel, followed by Bill, followed by Eds and Richie, followed by Stan. The TV is chattering quietly in the background behind them.
“Alright, host goes first, and we’ll move in clockwise.” Angel had announced. She laid down a blue card inscribed with a three.
Bill is thoughtful for a moment, rifling through his cards and finally he sets one down on top of it. Blue seven. Eds places down a yellow seven and Richie grumbles before drawing a few cards out of the deck in the middle. He finally places down a yellow five and Stan counters with the same number in green. And so the cycle continues, the silence progressively growing more and more tense, just waiting for the first shoe to finally drop. It comes back around to Stan again.
“...Sorry, Anj.” Stan says with a wryness in his voice, as though he wasn’t really sorry. He theatrically sets down a card and a death knell practically descends over her head. “Draw four.”
She gasps dramatically. “You little bastard!” She draws four cards out of the deck with a leisurely chuckle, and then places one of them into the middle with a flourish. Reverse card. “Your turn again, Stan the man. This way you can’t betray me a second time.”
“Fine by me, now I get to betray Richie.” Stan says with a devilish smirk. Skip turn.
“Oh come on!” Richie wails. “I had a good one!”
Eddie snickers and places down a green nine. “Sucks to suck, doesn’t it Trashmouth?” Bill places down a green two.
“Can it, wheezy, or I’ll sic the hounds on you next go around, I've got some good cards.”
“Oh no you won’t.” Angel says with a wag of her finger. Another reverse. The entire party flares up with a chorus of controversy and uproarious laughter. Bill snickers and puts down a second green two, then Eddie follows with a wildcard. “The color is red.”
“Yes!” Richie pipes up with a triumphant shriek. To the horror of everyone, he places down a red skip card in the middle. Stan stares at him silently with contempt.
“Nice one, idiot, now we know what color you have the most cards for.” Eddie says, his tone snide and condescending as he shuffles through his own hand.
“Yeah, and now the color is yellow.” Angel announces, placing down another wildcard.
“NO!” Richie howls. The room flares up again with laughter.
They continue in their childish game, taking one round into the next and then a third and a fourth after that. Bill was a silent and unassuming winner, taking home the gold in the first two games and Stan and Angel taking home the third and fourth. As time goes on everyone is growing increasingly bitter at one another, a cloud of competitive loathing settling over all of them as they fight to best the next player. Angel could sense the tension growing in the air, tension surely unavoidable in such a high stakes game as this, and couldn’t stop herself from becoming consumed in the heat of it as well. She’s sitting crosslegged on the couch, leaning forward in her anticipation for the next move, waiting to see what pandemonium surely awaits with the placement of each new card. After a while, though, they all fall into caustic silence. The clock ticks insistently overhead. The chatter on the TV seems to grow louder in the increasing absence of sound. Then the matter-of-fact words of a news reporter gradually intrudes in on their collective thoughts, and before they know it grim conversation is born from the quiet.
“Who knows who’s doing it?” Eds had said. “I hear about this shit constantly, but they never seem to catch anyone.” He sets down a blue four. “Your turn Bill.”
Bill puts down a green four. “Yeah, it’s... It’s ruh-really weird. T-two kids from a grade down went m-m-missing in the last month. The p-police don’t even have leads on them, and it's been weeks.” He says quietly. Angel feels her stomach start to roil with something unpleasant but she ignores it. She puts down a green six and doesn’t say anything.
“It feels like the police don’t even care.” Stan adds, placing down a card of his own. “I mean, they say they’re looking for the missing people, but my dad says that’s just a bunch of bullshit posturing.”
“Really, Rabbi Uris said that?” Angel asked, cocking an eyebrow.
“Well,” Stan says sheepishly. “Not in those exact words.”
“I don’t know, man, it just feels like things have been different lately.” Eddie says, placing down a reverse card. “Things haven’t really been the same since... You know, ever since...”
Ever since Georgie.
They all fall into discontented silence. Bill is the quietest of them all. The TV continues on behind them, unphased.
“...Hey, uh, can we get a fuckin’ change of scenery in here?” Richie breaks the silence loudly. There’s an uncharacteristic nervous edge to his voice. “I hate the news- it's, uh, it’s killing my buzz, know what I mean?”
They all immediately agree. Angel picks up the remote. “Good idea.” She says uneasily. She starts to flip through the various available channels.
“Your turn again Angel.”
“Oh. Uh...” She interrupts herself to place a card into the middle and then refocuses her attention back on the screen. There’s a baseball game on Channel 4, a hokey soap opera on Channel 10, a couple dull historical documentaries on Channels 14 and 15... Yawn. She continues. Even Channel 27 was nothing but static. She sighs and gets up, disrupting the game briefly to pluck a movie off the shelf instead. She slides her choice into the VCR slot and lets it play, comforted by the familiar sound of product-placement ads she’d heard a thousand times before. Everyone else seems instantly placated by the change of tone in the room too. The Paramount Pictures logo flashes briefly over the screen, and then the sound of a radio host announcing the beautiful weather in the city of Chicago cuts in sharply over the silence.
“Ferris Bueller?” Richie mutters absentmindedly, his eyes flickering up to the TV as he rifles through his cards. “Good choice, Anj.”
“...Ferris? Ferris? Tooooom!”
Two well-to-do parents are fussing over their apparently sickly child. “What, what’s wrong?” His father asks.
“What’s wrong ? For Christ’s sake look at him honey!”
He’s laying in bed, eyes wide as saucers, staring off into space. His father says his name and his spacey stare rolls lazily upward. He seems dazed and fatigued but it’s clearly an act, his voice child-like as he addresses them from under the covers and dramatically plays up his imagined illness. His theatrical performance is laughable and thin but somehow they miraculously buy into it anyway, even insisting he stay in bed as he makes meek attempts to sit up. “I have a test today,” He says, in intentionally weak protest. “I have to take it. I wanna go to a good college so I can have a fruitful life.” His mother adamantly refuses out of concern. “Honey, you’re not going to school like this now.” Cynical big sister arrives in the room, rightly skeptical of her brother’s supposed ailment but is nonetheless dismissed by her family anyway.
“I’m okay,” Ferris says after she’s gone. “I’ll just sleep. Maybe I’ll have an aspirin around noon.”
After not much deliberation, the parents both agree to let him stay home, telling him they’ll check on him and to call them at work should he need anything. He hams it up even more, buttering them up with weak praise, lauding them for being such loving, caring parents, and they both bid him an affectionate goodbye. They start to leave the room, and his mother tells him she loves him before starting to shut the door behind her. There’s silence. After all is well and the boy is alone in his room, he cautiously sits up in bed. He listens to the door close, and then his eyes dart to the center of the screen. He’s smug.
“They bought it.”
The game continues on as though it had never been disturbed. The unpleasant conversation of before is nothing but a distant memory now, their minds now engrossed in the intense heat of competition once more. A fifth game turns into a sixth, and the better part of an hour passes over their preoccupation. Though the kids seem to have forgotten the grim topic of the disappearances, Angel is less fortunate, and whether she likes it or not, thoughts of it all are starting to stew in her mind again. It was true, Angel had been able to dodge these ruminations lately as a result of her lovesick euphoria, but they had all been buried in a shallow grave rather than six feet under. It was hard to ignore the unease creeping up when she was reminded of everything she’d heard and experienced, and then slowly but surely those thoughts would come rising to the surface again for her lack of delight. She didn’t like thinking of it, of any of it. If she’d had her way, she would happily keep her head buried in the sand with Pennywise and never let her mind linger on any of it ever again. But no such luck unfortunately. The only thing worse than being aware of such strange and ominous dealings was the frustrating knowledge of knowing there was nothing you could do to stop them. Angel had given up a long time ago on any foolish notion of ending whatever force of evil lurked within the town, not that she ever truly had had such a notion in the first place. No, Angel was more than aware that she was fairly inconsequential to this town, even as an apparent fascination for an esoteric guardian angel, and that there was little chance at all she might have any sway over its cosmic fate. But it didn’t stop her from feeling guilty about it all. It was such a futile and helpless feeling she couldn’t control.
Angel pushes it from her mind and tries to become consumed in the game again. In the process her mind starts to wander to other places, and she wonders where Pennywise might be now. He hadn’t been around much in the last few days; though of course, when he wasn’t whispering in her ear or monopolizing her attention on the TV, he was present in other ways. He would leave her gifts and notes just as he had done before, and they were more affectionate now, more personal. He’d leave her things that specifically catered to her interests. Special inking pens he’d conjured up from god only knows where, little pinback buttons and squares of fabric perfect for patch-making, her favorite candies from childhood... She thought it so sweet that he was trying so hard to keep her interest. It was refreshing and new and she, so enamored with him, leaned into the attention wholeheartedly. Pennywise knew it to be important to keep laying on the charm, knew it was crucial to continue in his courting behavior, but he had held off on continuing to be there with her in person, at least for the time being. He wanted her to long for his touch and his presence, wanted her to want him there, holding her, keeping her within the unwavering security of his protection. The time was coming for him to make his return, however, and the reunion would be so sweet, so delightful, the beginning of a new stage in their budding relationship. He had been so patient in the weeks following Valentine’s Day, and now he simply couldn’t wait to be with her again. He would come back to her, and she would welcome him with open arms.
“Oh, you motherfucker.” Richie breathed.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off had finally reached its third act, and now focused on a conversation between the eponymous character’s girlfriend and best friend. They walk through Chicago’s crowded downtown thoroughfares during a lively parade, discussing Ferris and his whereabouts, seeming to have lost him somewhere in the crowd along the way. They’re meandering through hundreds of people trying to find him, the chatter around them loud and boisterous as they make their way down the congested street. The kids paid little attention to the movie, focused instead on the happenings within the fascinating yet frustrating world of Uno. Angel finds herself having forgotten about Pennywise and everything else for the time being, having gotten absorbed in the game herself once more. Bill had a tally of three games won now, Stan with two, Rich with one, Eddie with four somehow, and Angel with two, but the group had now forgotten how many games they’d played, having gotten lost in it for hours. They were playing through the deck for the umpteenth time, and this one had been a real nail biter so far. So many twists and turns, flimsy alliances turned inevitable betrayals, and obscenities shouted at one another that it was truly a sight to behold. At one point Mayor Jello had sauntered into the room, gotten a good, long look at the unfolding commotion, and promptly slinked back out to attend to his own matters.
“You can’t stack draw fours!” Richie had exclaimed incredulously. “That’s against the rules!”
“Nuh uh.” Angel informs him, reclining back on the couch. “House rules. Stacked draw twos and draw fours are totally free game.”
“Yeah, Richie. Read ‘em and weep.” Eds says smugly.
“Fuck that shit!” He’s appalled. “I refuse to honor three stacked draw fours!”
Psst.
“You can’t just refuse, dipshit!”
“Like hell I can’t! I’ve got seventeen cards already, it’s not fair!”
“You’re being a sore loser, Rich.” Stan sighed.
Psst. Hey.
They continue to squabble amongst themselves. Richie is adamant and will not budge, and everyone else is needling him to simply honor it and move on.
“Okay then, if you pussies get to stack draw fours, then I get to do this.” He throws down a blue reverse card.
“Hey, you can’t do that!”
“Sure I can. If you get a pass on breaking the rules then I get a pass too.” Richie says with a shrug. “Draw twelve, asshole.”
“I’m not drawing twelve, Richie!”
Psst.
She finally hears it. Her ears perk up.
Angel.
While they’re arguing, she feels a shiver run up her spine, and she turns to face the source of the sound. The TV. The movie is still playing, Alan Ruck and Mia Sara still journeying through downtown Chicago, the crowd still chattering on in an endless chorus of white noise. A voice starts to address them from a P.A speaker; one familiar, smooth and lilting, but nothing at all like Ferris’s.
“Ladies and gentlemen, you’re such a wonderful crowd. We’d like to play a little tune for you. It’s one of my personal favorites, and I’d like to dedicate it to a very special girl who doesn’t know just how special she is. Angel, darling, look at me.”
She stares hard, her whole world dissolving into static around her. The camera shot falls on a parade float in the center of the screen, but instead of Ferris dramatically lip syncing the words to Danke Schoen on the stage, Pennywise has bafflingly taken his place on the screen somehow. She’s warm now, she can’t believe her eyes as he walks among the costumed dancers, miming the words and playfully gesturing with his hands toward the center of the screen. He was singing to her.
Danke schoen, darling, danke schoen
Thank you for all the joy and pain
Picture shows, second balcony was the place we'd meet
Second seat, go Dutch treat, you were sweet
Danke schoen, darling, danke schoen
Save those lies, darling don't explain
I recall Central Park in fall
How you tore your dress, what a mess, I confess, that’s not all
He turns to face her completely now, and the movie continues on without him uninterrupted. The children don’t seem to notice his voice, or his presence on the TV. They simply proceed in their heated contention. It's just him and her.
“Hello, sweetness. It's so nice to see your lovely face again.”
Warm phantom hands cup her hips now and she has to resist the urge to gasp. He’s firm but affectionate.
“Uh uh, precious girl. Keep it quiet, would you? Wouldn’t want them to catch on to us, hmm?”
She gulps with a nod and holds her breath as those hands start to wander up, over her clothes, toward her cotton-clad breasts.
“Yes... I’m sure you’re not ready to have that conversation, are you? Wouldn’t even know how to explain it... Oh, look at you, your face is already all red. Cute little Angel. Cute cute cute!”
His hands ghost delicately over her breasts and go to her collarbone, stroking sensually there with one feather-light finger until she’s squirming. He cups her cheek now.
“Oh, darling... How good your skin feels underneath my fingers… Did you like my song? Did you find it as lovely as I find you? Oh, hold on- I think I have another one coming up.”
You had better watch me.
Richie smacks Eddie’s cards out of his hand and the argument flares up again. Angel doesn’t even process it. She’s off in her own world now, and his touch is so titillating that she feels that tingle start to work its way from her belly all the way between her legs again, even as Twist and Shout comes on over the loudspeaker. Pennywise is lip-syncing the words to the upbeat number now, shimmying and dancing on the parade float as he pretends to sing into the microphone. All the while those hands are continuing to grope at her body, lewdly venturing over her curves while a marching band spiritedly plays along to the tune. They follow the beats of the song with brassy enthusiasm.
Well, shake it up, baby, now
Twist and shout
Come on, come on, come, come on, baby, now
Come on and work it on out
Well, work it on out
You know you look so good
You know you got me goin' now
Just like I know you would
Pennywise is bolstered by the excitement of the crowd and the sheer look on Angel’s face, the way she can’t keep her eyes off him and his on-screen antics. A small flash mob starts to form in a plaza and they mime the words too as they dance down a small flight of concrete steps. The entirety of the parade seems to have congregated around the float in a circle now; the parade-goers are all caught in their own rhythm, moving in different fashions but all in tandem at the same time as they sing along. And all the while Angel is staring, her heart pulsing restlessly inside of her, ignorant of the kids’ growing dissent amongst one another.
Well, shake it up, baby, now
Twist and shout
Come on, come on, come, come on, baby, now
Come on and work it on out
You know you twist, little girl
You know you twist so fine
Come on and twist a little closer now
And let me know that you're mine
That feeling inside of her belly is only growing more and more as she watches him. The way he struts and sashays across the stage of the float, the way he performs so electrically that it riles up the whole crowd; she can hear the bells on his suit jingling with every one of his movements, the sound ringing in her ears as she fights to maintain some semblance of normalcy and composure. And all the while his eyes keep flickering back into hers, reminding her just who he was singing to, just who he was doing this all for.
Who she belonged to.
“Angel, tell Richie he’s being fucking ridiculous!” Eddie demands, and suddenly she snaps back into focus.
“You’re the one who’s being ridiculous! Now you’re telling me you can use a fucking skip card on yourself?”
“Yeah, I figured if we’re all breaking rules, why not?”
“That just passes the draw twelve onto Bill! He doesn’t deserve that!”
“Oh, so I do deserve it?”
“Guys, for the love of god, shut up!” Angel practically roars, her assessment of the situation all suddenly caught up again.
They all fall quiet. She sighs a labored sigh and pinches the bridge of her nose. When she glances at the TV screen out of the corner of her eye, she notices the movie is back to normal. No Pennywise miming the words to Twist and Shout, no saucy side glances or teasing little gestures, just Ferris amid the cheering parade crowd. She can’t feel his hands anymore either.
“You know guys,” She says with another heaving sigh. “It's getting late- I think you should probably be heading home after this game.”
“Okay but-”
“Richie, just take the damn loss and draw twelve, I’m not gonna watch you two bicker and argue for another three hours.”
He sulks. “Fiiiiiine.” He draws his cards, angry cloud of chagrin palpable in a three foot radius around him.
The game continues. As they slowly make their way through the rest of the deck, Angel finds her thoughts wandering back to Pennywise; wondering where he had gone, if he might come back, finding that she missed him and his touch, not that it was at all surprising. The children have come to a stiff truce and are now quietly placing their cards into the center pile, leaving her to continue stewing over his whereabouts. To tell the truth, the sight of him was such a pleasant surprise that she’d gotten a little… Excited. She hadn’t seen him in days, had only kept correspondence with him through the gifts. He hadn’t even been talking to her all that much; the last time she’d heard his voice was on Tuesday as she had been drifting off to sleep, and though she hadn’t dreamt of him, she could still feel his presence keeping her warm throughout the night. But after that, nothing. If not for the gifts, she would have thought that he was abandoning her again, would have sent that familiar panicky dread roiling up in her gut at the idea of being left behind, but thankfully there was no such feeling of alienation. There was only this delicious feeling of want and desire, bubbling up inside of her as she watched him dance and perform; just for her, only for her, making her feel special. It was a feeling that only seemed to become more apparent as the days went on, this delightful little feeling that made her start to lose her grip on reality. She starts to get lost in that wonderful madness, vacantly placing cards into the pile with every turn, silently contemplating the scenario of his return and finding that a blush was starting to stain her cheeks again at the thought of him. His tall form, his striking eyes, those massive hands; towering over her, looking into her, pinning her against the wall-
“Dirty, dirty, naughty little girl.” His voice whispers directly in her ear. “You’ve got company over, you should control yourself.”
She almost gasps but she restrains herself. She can hear the smile in his voice, can almost see him wagging a finger at her.
“...Need to wait, little thing, need to be patient.” The phantom hands are back at her waist, slowly trailing down to rest at her hips again. Soft and gentle, comforting and sweet. It drives her mad.
“Reverse card. Angel, it’s your turn.”
Suddenly she’s not paying attention again. She’s whining silently, she’s screaming at him in her mind and that only seems to please him more. His voice evokes a shit-eating grin now.
“Wouldn’t… Want to rush things, would we? No, no… We should take our time, we should savor it all…”
Those hands are wandering lower, lower, ever so slightly…
“Angel?”
Her heart is thundering against her chest. She swallows hard, staring off into the space at her feet as she sits, rooted to the spot. He chuckles in her ear as he watches her squirm, clearly delighted at her embarrassment. “Orrrrrr…” He whispers. Her heart stops.
“Angel, are you okay?”
“Maybe... Just maybe... We should throw all that caution to the wind, be bold, adventurous. Maybe I should just wait until they leave. Maybe I should wait until you’re all alone, and then I’ll come... I’ll back you up against the wall, corner you with no escape like a pretty little mouse. Tell me, would you like that?” His hand trails inward, his voice raspy and sonorous in her ear, and her breath hitches in her throat when it brushes up against the tender spot between her legs.
“How about it, pretty girl?”
How about it?
“P-Pennywise…” She breathes.
"Dude, she’s zoned out.”
“Angel!”
She snaps out of it.
“What? What?” She’s pressing her hands to her hot cheeks.
“You spaced out.”
“Are you okay?”
“...What’s P-P-Pennywise?”
She shakes her head quickly. “Sorry, I…” She finally processes the last question and feels her cheeks getting hotter again underneath her fingers. “Nothing, no one.” She clears her throat and thumbs through her hand, placing a red six into the center pile. But his voice is still there, calling to her, teasing her, needling her, just trying to get her to break.
“...Hey Angel,” he breathes huskily. “Wanna hear a poem I wrote for you? It goes like this- Roses are red, violets are fine, you be the six, and I’ll be the--”
Stop. Stop. She tries her best to look normal now but she’s starting to sweat profusely. They continue in the game; there’s a palpable uneasiness settling over all of them but each and every one of them just tries to ignore it. Red nine, red four, blue four, blue skip; blue seven, green seven, wildcard yellow, draw four. Angel is trying her best to ignore him, ignore his little games and rhyming; ignore the pleasure building inside despite her greatest attempts to fight it off, ignore her embarrassment and the way she could feel them all staring at her. The day was long now and she wanted them to go so it could finally be over. She places down another card.
“Oh ho ho, I can see how flustered you are, darling! Poor girl, poor little pet… Be careful now, they’re starting to worry…”
She’s so frustrated that she can hardly breathe. Her face feels like a furnace. She can’t even look them in the face now as she continues laying cards down into the middle of the pile; she can only keep her eyes rooted shamefully at her feet as she listens to the clock tick judgmentally overhead. The minutes crawl by at a snail’s pace, but thankfully the game is nearing its end. Pennywise continues his teasing though, content to torture Angel with his words and devilish sing-song as she fights to maintain her thinly-veiled facade. Stan appears to be pulling ahead, he’s about to call Uno but then-
“Pennywise and Angel sittin’ in a tree, F-U-C-K-I-N--”
“OKAY!” She cries out suddenly. They all jump about ten feet off the ground. She immediately processes her outburst, and now she chokes, she struggles to explain herself. “It’s uh…. It’s getting late guys. I think,” She swallows. “Think you should all be getting home.”
“Jesus Christ, are you okay? Your face is on fuckin’ fire dude.”
“I’m fine!” She insists. “I’m just… Not feeling good. But I’ll be okay, I just need to sleep.”
“Angel-”
“Talk soon?”
She practically pushes them all out the door, and they leave behind a mess of Uno cards amid their protest. She reiterates that she’s fine and then they all hesitantly bid her goodbye from her stoop, further unnerved when she doesn’t even reply. She shuts the door, she takes a deep breath in through her nose and out through her mouth. All of his teasing had gotten to her more than she cared to admit; she couldn't help it, no one had ever shown her such attention before, especially not... That kind of attention, not unless they were trying to be insulting. She found it facetious, vulgar in a way that was amusing and fun, though she'd be lying if she said the time and place could not have been any more inappropriate. The worries of what the kids must think is slowly seeping into her brain and she feels her face getting red all over again. What would they think if they... If they knew? It's not as though it were anything bad, she just... Wouldn't know how to explain any of it. How he had romanced her with all of his gifts, the way they'd met... The things he was saying. Oh god. They were privy to a lot of dirty jokes, sure, (Lord knows Richie was incapable of working anything but blue) but she simply couldn't divulge such intimate details of her own romantic courtship like that, they had no business in it. She's sure they wouldn't understand anyway, that they might misconstrue his intentions and try to convince her that he was bad news or something. Children though they were, they were much more mature than most of the adults in this town, and they were not immune to being overprotective of her. She tries not to let her concerns get to her so much, not right now. Now, all she could do was simply splash cold water on her face, put all the Uno cards back where they came from, and leave this mortifying ordeal behind her. She takes another deep breath and sighs, pinching the bridge of her nose and rubbing her face tiredly. She counts to five and when she turns around she has to bite back a breathless shriek.

Random Storytime!
February 14, 2020 is the 23rd anniversary of my becoming a vegetarian!
Most people wouldn’t have this day memorized; it’s not as though I actually celebrate in any way. The only reason I remember is because how I became a vegetarian happened in such a ridiculous way (& semi-traumatizing for myself as a child) that it has remained a very vivid memory of mine to this day.
When I was in 2nd grade my family up & moved across the country to Texas. As we settled into our new home, my mom took up a temporary job as a substitute teacher for the school district my older brother & I were enrolled in.
On February 14, 1997, a Friday if I recall, my mom happened to be the substitute teacher for my 2nd grade class (Cheers to my 2nd grade teacher for ditching her class of children to leave a whole day clear to get dicked down for Valentine’s Day. Respect.). This wasn’t the first time my mom had been my substitute teacher (my hometown was very small at the time) so I didn’t think it would a day different from any other.
Our teacher had left us with a bunch of busy work - random worksheets to fill out, drawings to finish, stories to read. My mom wasn’t required to teach any lesson plans, just to move us from one task to the next after a set time.
One particular worksheet required that we “connect the food to the animal it comes from.” The left column had various foods (eggs, hamburger, steak, sausage links, chicken nuggets, & a ham) & the right column had a few animals listed (cow, pig, chicken, ostrich, & horse).
What kinda fucking worksheet????
Should have been easy-peasy, right? Yeah, the rest of my class thought so as they were all zooming through the worksheet without being confused as fuck like I was. I spent a good few minutes sitting in my chair looking around at my classmates & back down to my paper several times, wondering why nobody else seemed to not need any help. After a while I thought maybe since I was new to the class, as I had only recently moved to Texas, that I had missed the lesson explaining this concept.
No big deal. I’d just go up & ask my mom since she was my substitute teacher that day. I brought the paper up to the desk where my mom sat, handed it to her & said, “I don’t understand.” She took one quick glance at the page & simply repeated “connect the foods to the animals they come from.” Blink blink. Blink. Yeah, I can fucking read, mom. Thanks. What does that mean exactly? I asked again, “What does that mean?” My mom took a pencil & drew a line connecting the hamburger to the cow on the page. My exact words to her were, “A cow poops a hamburger?”
I will never forget the look on my mom’s face when she fucking realized she had never taught me what meat or animal products were or where they came from, particularly how they were obtained. ‘Oh shiiiiiiiiiiit’ doesn’t even being to cover that expression she wore.
Now, at this point, I should make it known that by the age of 8 years old I was deadset on becoming a veterinarian; it was all I had wanted to be since I was 3 years old (at the age of 25 I officially became one, heyoooo!). I loved animals more than anything else. I had once beaten the shit out of my older brother because I saw him try to kick a pigeon - I went into a blind murderous rage! Even after my dad had pulled me off of him & held me upside down I didn’t stop swinging & kicking. Point being - I LOVED ANIMALS MORE THAN ANYTHING. I would never do anything to hurt them.
My mom wasn’t gentle when she dropped the earth-shattering knowledge on me that some animals were used for human consumption.
“No, a cow doesn’t poop a hamburger. The cow is killed and cut up for meat to make a hamburger. *she draws a line from sausage links to the pig* Sausage comes from pig meat. *she draws a line from chicken nuggets to the chicken* Chicken nuggets are made from chicken meat. *she draws a line from eggs to the chicken and ostrich* Birds lay eggs, some kinds that we eat. *she draws a line from the ham to the pig* Ham comes from pig meat.”
Here is where I finally overcame my absolute shock & horror at all this new information that had been thrown at me about my precious animals... & broke down crying, very loudly, then proceeded to run out of the classroom because I remembered that my dad had packed me a ham sandwich intended for lunch that day. Wasn’t fucking eating that anymore. Nope.
My mom gets a neighboring teacher to look after the class & goes off after me. It was easy to find me, just had to follow the noise of the wailing & sniffling little girl in the bathroom stall.
I don’t exactly remember how she coaxed me out of the stall back into the classroom, but I do remember yelling at her that I thought her & dad were liars & monsters for letting me eat animals & that I would never trust food ever again, lololol.
She didn’t make me finish the worksheet. Years later she told me she finished it for me so I’d get the credit, but she figured I’d been traumatized enough.
Lunch time rolled around a short while later. I had a packed lunch that my dad had so lovingly made me, the monster-liar-animal-eater that he was! I refused to eat anything that was packed for me until I asked a bunch of questions about it. I sat with my mom in the classroom during lunch & pointed at everything that was packed for me & everything that she’d brought for herself, asking if it came from an animal & which animal. The only thing I’d deemed safe eating were my carrot sticks, some grapes, and my apple juice - but even then I was still suspicious. I glared at my mom the entire time she ate her own ham sandwich.
On top of that, it had been Valentine’s Day! Everyone in my class had exchanged chocolates, my absolute favorite food! Which animal did chocolate come from? Monkeys? Penguins? Turtles? I didn’t fucking know! My mom explained it came from a bean grown from the ground, but that it was sometimes made with milk from cows. Alive cows that were only milked & not killed. I was suspicious & no longer had any trust in me, so I didn’t eat a single piece anyway. Do you know how it was for me to not eat any of the chocolate that day???? IT WAS THE HARDEST THING I’VE EVER DONE!
It took me a while to come to terms with the fact that people ate animals. I was very upset & offended, but decided that just because they all did didn’t mean I had to! So, I became a vegetarian that day. My parents thought it was a phase, that I’d grow out of it. At first they joked that I liked meat too much to give it up forever. After a few weeks of that not working, they took me to a doctor to have him explain the importance of having a balanced diet for a growing child, but I didn’t care to listen. I did get sick a few weeks after that - surprise, iron deficiency! A different doctor helped me make a list of vegetables I needed to eat more of if I wanted to stay healthy.
So that’s how I became a vegetarian; a shitty ‘connect the foods to the animals’ worksheet that traumatized me. A day that was meant for love was the day of my worst heartache. At the time it was horrifying, but now it’s become a funny family story my mom likes sharing with people. Occasionally she will randomly say “a cow poops a hamburger?” & laugh at me.

Christmas Eve: A Rina Fic
Author’s Note: Literally no one asked for this, I just wanted to write it. 😂 I’m also in the process of making a part two to this fic for New Year’s Eve, so I’ll link it when I’m finished!
“Both of my parents are working...” Ej sighed.
“Ok, well- moving on!” Miss Jenn said awkwardly as she looked over at Carlos. “What will you be doing for Christmas?”
Carlos smiled at Seb and placed a hand on his desk. “We’ll be singing Christmas Carols door to door”.
“Oh how wonderful! Please make sure to send me copies,” Miss Jenn requested.
Carlos gave her a look of disbelief, “what kind of co-captain would I be if I didn’t send my leading lady a copy? Of course, you will get one”.
Miss Jenn gave an amused giggle. She brought her composure back. “Ricky? How about you? And your dad? Right? You’ll be with your dad Christmas Eve? He shouldn’t have to be alone”.
Ricky grimaced uncomfortably. He didn’t mind Miss Jenn liking his dad, or even them dating, but she asks about him... a LOT. And the last time she asked, she asked if he wore the skinny jeans she bought him for Christmas. Apparently it “outlined” his figure nicely.
“Yes, Miss Jenn,” Ricky said, slightly through his teeth. “It’ll just be my dad and I”. She looked hopeful- Ricky crushed that quickly. “But we were probably going over to Nini’s to help her, her mom’s, Kourtney and her family bake cookies. They give them to the homeless shelter every year”. Ricky hesitated over every part of his remark, especially the part about Nini.
He had spent all of his time with Gina before she moved, then when he thought she wasn’t coming back, he kissed Nini. He liked Nini, right? And they dated and now she finally liked him, so what was the problem? Well... it’s Gina. She moved back and ever since things have been... weird between them. They smile awkwardly at each other in the hallway, almost hugged opening night during the last scene but decided against it, and one time they almost had a conversation more than five sentences when Gina asked Ricky about the missed science homework. But then Big Red came in and saved the day himself. Gina gave a gracious thank you and eye roll and walked away.
Gina’s head was eyeing the marks on her desk, so Ricky couldn’t tell if she was upset or not at the mention of Nini. She traced the writings on the wood with her finger as Miss Jenn asked everyone else in the cast circle about their holiday plans.
Big Red was going to play video games and seemed saltier than usual that Ricky was bailing on their annual video game plans to spend time with Nini, Ashlyn invited EJ to fly down with her family since her sister was in college and ended up not being able to make the family trip in time. EJ had the money to cover the costs and gave a delighted, “yes!”
All eyes shifted to Gina, who was last to be asked. “Oh, you know, we’ll be doing all sorts of fun plans. Decorating the tree, making treats, watching movies... Christmas is... great”. Ricky knew Gina was lying.
The bell gave a sharp ring. Carlos was in the background yelling, “ok everyone! Pre-order for mine and Seb’s Christmas CD is on the piano! 40% off if you order now!... Red! Phone numbers ONLY please. Stop drawing that!...”
Ricky tried to run up and stop Gina, but she was about two steps ahead of him. Just as he began to speak, Gina bolted out and he felt an arm on his shoulder. Miss Jenn.
“Rickyyy!!!”
“H-h-hey, Miss Jenn,” Ricky said, avoiding eye contact.
She placed a firm arm around his shoulders as she walked him to the door, speaking without taking a breath. “Listen, I know you’re going to be busy with Nini and I’m sure your dad doesn’t have any plans, so if your dad wants I won’t be doing anything. I would love to have some company that night. My mom got me this ham, but I don’t really want to eat it all by myself- oh! And then you two can have leftovers and I’m sure you guys needs ham leftovers, right? Well, if he wants to hang out with me or something like I said I won’t be busy so he can just let me know,” Miss Jenn pushed Ricky out the auditorium door. “Ok bye now!” She shut it enthusiastically as Ricky shook his head trying to make sense of what happened.
Ricky looked around the semi-crowded hallway as students made their way to their classes. Gina was long gone.
***********
Miss Jenn breathed a quick sigh from behind the door, perked up, flattened her skirt, and swiftly made her way to the piano to pick up some extra sheet music.
“Miss Jenn?” She heard a soft voice come from opposite stage.
“Gina?” Miss Jenn’s face crumpled as she double checked the closed door. “I thought? I saw?... you leave that way?...”
“There’s a door on that side of the stage too”.
“Oh, yeah, right.”
“Anyway...” Gina gritted her teeth awkwardly, “want some help?”
“Umm... sure, Gina”. Miss Jenn smiled delightfully. “There’s some chairs that need to be stacked”.
Gina made her way over to the chairs. She stacked two in silence and began the third by asking, “so you don’t have plans for Christmas Eve?”
Miss Jenn froze. “What?! No! I have tons of them. Family, friends... so many wonderful people-“
Gina cut her off. “I heard you tell Ricky you didn’t”.
Miss Jenn lowered her head while she meekly straightened her papers on the piano top.
“It’s ok, Miss Jenn. I don’t have any either”.
“Well, that’s interesting Gina, considering you told the entire class you did,” Miss Jenn shot back defensively.
Gina threw her hands up, surrendering, “ok, ok, I’m caught. I just didn’t want anyone worrying about me. My mom is my only family around, but she’s working. So yeah, it’s just me. But... I was planning on just watching YouTube tutorials on how to make eclairs and build puzzles that day anyway... and I think those are activities you can do with two people”.
Miss Jenn finally made eye contact with Gina, “...do you like ham?”
Gina grinned, “love it”.
*************************************************
Christmas Eve
Nini was pulling the last batch of sugar cookies out of the oven while Ricky and Kourtney were slapping on globs of green, blue and red frosting on the cooled ones.
“Oh no...” Dana, Nini’s mom, said scrolling through her phone.
“What?” Nini asked as she started sliding cookies onto the cooling rack.
“The weather... it looks like a bad storm is rolling in tonight. The homeless shelter will be incredibly hard to get to with traffic and this storm. I don’t know, Nini, I don’t think we should go”.
“But mom, we do this every year!” Nini protested. “And what would we do with all of these?!”
Ricky used his finger to take some frosting off of his chin and eat it. Nini glared at him as if her eyes were to say “not the time”.
“Oh. Sorry,” Ricky set down his currently half frosted cookie and knife.
Kourtney got up and gave Nini a side hug as she rested her head on Nini’s shoulder.
“There’s got to be something we can do”. Ricky’s dad, Mike, interjected.
“Well, It’s not the exact same, but we could give them to some people around the area. And we can always make cookies again for New Years or something and bring them then,” Carol suggested.
“That works,” Nini looked disappointed, but accepting considering the circumstance.
**************
Gina was adjusting the fork next to the paper plate at her small table. It wasn’t much, but Gina really tried to make the place nice for her special guest. She turned on her fireplace, hung up two socks with duct tape, set out some holiday paper plates and plastic ware, and even cut and taped a bunch of paper snowflakes all over the house. She had strung some lights and put up the few Christmas decorations she found in a small box in her attic. She didn’t have a tree, so she put up a faux one on her tv screen from a channel that showed it with Christmas music playing in the background. It wasn’t much, but it made Gina giddy.
Gina heard her doorbell ring. She swung the door open fast and immediately her eyes fixated on Miss Jenn’s arms. In one she was carrying her cooked ham and the other had a small gift bag and her purse. Gina couldn’t afford to get Miss Jenn anything and immediately felt horrible.
“Uh... um... come on in,” Gina stammered.
Miss Jenn looked around as she placed the items on the kitchen counter. “Gina, it’s beautiful”.
“Oh, it’s nothing,” Gina said sheepishly.
Miss Jenn set a gentle hand on Gina’s shoulder. “Really, it looks great”.
Gina bit her lip thoughtfully. “Well, how about that ham?”
“Oh yes! I have just the thing for it!” Miss Jenn zipped open her purse and pulled out a plastic handle with a cover. When she slid the cover off it revealed a giant knife- to which Gina’s eyes widened with surprise.
“Uhm... you don’t carry that around with you... all the time... do you miss Jenn?”
“Oh no, of course not silly,” Miss Jenn said as she made the first carve into the ham. “I can’t carry it at airports,” she said as she winked playfully at Gina.
Right when Gina was about to say Christmas was cancelled, she heard the doorbell ring again.
“Weird. I didn’t invite anyone else,” Gina thought outloud.
“Nini? Ricky?” Gina said, her face puzzled. She heard the knife clud! in the background and Miss Jenn scurry to the front door. “Mike?!” She said, enthusiastically.
Nini, Ricky, Mike, and Kourtney were all standing in the doorway holding a giant plate of cookies.
“What are you guys doing here?”
“We brought cookies!” Ricky said as he tried to present them with a fancy hand gesture.
Kourtney, unable to keep her mouth shut, piped in, “No offense, but Miss Jenn what are you doing here?”
Nini shot Kourtney a look.
“Celebrating Christmas?” Miss Jenn said with a strained smile.
“Come on in”. Gina has to force the words out of her mouth. As soon as she turned around, she rolled her eyes and mouthed “whyyyyy”.
The gang let themselves in. The teens put the cookies on one of them empty counters in the kitchen and Mike made his way over to the ham. “Hey, Jenn, did you carve this?”
Jenn perked up, “yes, why?” She said with a confident smile.
“Well... uh... it’s great... it’s just you carved into the bone and that might break the knife”. Jenn’s eyes widened in embarrassment.
“It’s ok! You did great”. Mike tried to save himself.
“No, I actually don’t know how to carve a ham”. Miss Jenn got a calculated look in her eyes. “But maybe you could teach me?”
Mike looked at the kids, knowing they had more stops to go. “Would you guys be alright if I helped Miss Jenn with this ham?”
Everyone said yes, minus Nini who said no, but when she realized she was the only one, quickly changed her answer to yes.
Gina heard the doorbell ring again.
“What the-?” She asked outloud. She opened up her door and “The First Day of Christmas” was belted in her face by none other than Carlos and Seb. They barely got through the first day before Gina hushed them and stepped onto her small porch.
“What are you guys doing here?!”
“Caroling!” Carlos chimed, before noticing everyone else in the window. “What are they doing here?!” He asked offended. “Are you having an official cast party without me?! Gina! How could you? I thought we were frie-“.
Gina cut him off, slightly annoyed. “Will you be quiet? It’s not! I lied. Ok? I didn’t have anyone coming over for Christmas so I invited Miss Jenn and then the Three Musketeers and their father randomly showed up and they’re the last people I want here”.
“Gina, the more the merrier. Seb and I’s families can wait. Let’s make sure you get a Christmas to remember”.
Carlos then pushed past Gina and went into her house. “Hellooooo everyone!” He greeted. The other three ran over and gave him and Seb enthusiastic hugs.
Gina accepted her fate and walked back inside.
About fifteen minutes later, she was showing Kourtney how she found her “tree channel” on the TV when another knock came on the door.
Gina opened it up, now officially confused. “Red? What on Earth could you be doing here?”
He was carrying a small Christmas bag. “Well, I heard there was a party here-“
“Carlos?”
“Yeah,” Gina perched her lips, “anyway, Ricky also left this at my house and I heard he was here so I made sure to bring it with me. I also brought video games!”
Red let himself in and that was when Gina noticed the giant black backpack stuffed to the brim hanging from his back.
Gina yelled out to the empty street, “anyone else want to join? Apparently there’s a party at my house!”
And as if, on cue, Gina saw two more figures appear. Ashlyn and EJ. “Hellloooo! We heard there was a party here!” Ashlyn hollered carrying a giant pack of soda’s and EJ with chips and other treats in his arms.
“You two are supposed to be in Denver!”
“We were,” stated Ashlyn, “but my flight was with my sister- which EJ took- and it ended up being cancelled because of the storm. My whole family is there so we’re stuck here”.
“Storm? What storm?” Gina asked puzzled.
“Dude, you didn’t hear?” EJ asked.
“No, dude,” Gina retorted in a salty tone, “I didn’t”.
“Well, it’s massive. People are being told that after 6- so like fifteen minutes from now- we need to stay indoors. It’s supposed to be icy and snow like fifteen inches. It’s crazy. So we decided to come here, hopefully beating the storm. Besides, when Carlos declares a party, we have to be there”.
Gina sighed as she gave up. She should have expected a Carlos-party at her house sometime, might as well be now. She let the two, now shivering, in.
She called her mom and explained the situation. Her mom was surprisingly ok with all of the people there, mostly because there was adult supervision. Unfortunately, because of the storm, her mom wouldn’t be back until tomorrow. The office was requesting people stay to be safe, so the entire city was basically on lockdown at this point.
Gina made her way back to the kitchen. Everyone was scattered and chatting throughout her house. She found Miss Jenn and Mike finishing up the ham. She gently tapped Miss Jenn on the shoulder. “Um... Miss Jenn... some more people showed up”.
Miss Jenn must have really been in her own thoughts because she jumped back into Mike’s arms when she noticed all the new people that had arrived since Mike. They awkwardly pushed away from each other and brushed their clothes off.
“Oh... I’m going to need more ham”.
Gina saw Ricky approaching her and tried to push past Red and Ashlyn having a rousing conversation about dinosaurs.
“Hey, Gina!” She heard him call. She pretended not to hear him as she pushed through Red and Ashlyn. Ricky shook his head in frustration and returned back to Nini.
“Everything ok?” Nini asked cautiously.
“Yup. Just fine. Can we please just get back to... whatever we were doing?”
“We were just talking Ricky”.
“Yeah um, never mind. I’m going to get a drink,” Ricky said as he made his way to a canned Dr. Pepper.
About twenty minutes later, Carlos saw Gina sitting alone in her home office. She was sitting in a giant, faded swivel chair- her back to the doorframe, staring somberly out the window.
Carlos sighed dramatically. “OOOhhhh”. This caused Gina to jump, swivel around quickly, and glare at him.
He sighed even more dramatically as he fell against the doorway, palm to his forward, “OOOOHHHHHHH”.
“Yes, Carlos?” Gina asked, unamused.
“Well,” Carlos said, sauntering to a chair, his antics still high. He fell dramatically in the chair as he whimpered, “I’m just so. bored. at this amazing party you threw”.
Nothing.
“So I was thinking we should play a game”.
“Carlos, I own like, no board games”.
“Oh that’s fine!” Carlos perked up. “Charades doesn’t need board games,” he said with a wink. He popped up and held out his hand fashionably toward her.
Gina smiled and shook her head as she took his hand and they ran out to the living room. She noticed they were all already sitting around, a bag with paper strips sat neatly in the center of her coffee table. “Attention! Attention! We are ALL playing charades. No one gets a choice. Pick a teammate,” Carlos demanded royally.
Carlos ran over and grabbed Seb’s hand. Ashlyn and Red looked at each other and shrugged. Jenn scooted closer to Mike in the kitchen. Which left Nini, EJ, Ricky, and Kourtney sitting on the couches and Gina awkwardly standing in the corner.
“I call Gina,” Ricky said without hesitation. Both Nini and Gina gave him weird looks.
“Well then...” Carlos said apparently discomfited, “ I guess that leaves Nini, EJ, and Kourtney on the other team. That’s fine. Throuples are fun!” Carlos didn’t even hesitate with his last statement, but it made the entire room incredibly tense.
“Well go on!” Carlos pushed Gina in Ricky’s direction. “Go sit by your teammate”. Gina sat down next to Ricky, who was now perfectly settled in between her and Nini on the two seater couch.
“We’ll go first!” Miss Jenn volunteered. The game was fun, but Jenn was incredibly competitive and rubbed the fact she and Mike were winning in everyone’s face. Red and Ashlyn cheated the entire time which made Carlos annoyed. And Nini was barely giving any spirit to her team. Gina and Ricky cooperatively played together- at first it was awkward, but about two turns in they were already high-fiving and celebrating their victories and secretly celebrating their opponents losses.
It was the fourth round and it became Gina and Ricky’s turn again. She reached in the grocery bag and pulled out a little white paper with Seb’s handwriting poorly written on it. It read “Gabriella”. She got horrible flashbacks of seeing Ricky and Gina kiss during the show and after the show. Behind stage. Where they still don’t know she saw them.
“Uhh... umm...” she made an elephant trunk draping her arm from her nose and flailing her hand.
“Elephant!” Ricky yelled gleefully.
“Yeah, sure,” Gina said and then swiftly exited the room.
“That’s weird...,”Seb said under his breath. “I’m pretty sure I didn’t put elephant in there...”
Ashlyn chimed in, “let’s keep going,” which was perfect, because it broke the tension. Red ran over to Gina who was walking quickly to her bedroom. “Are you still playing?”
“Umm... no... I’m gonna take a break. Games wear me out,” she said as she let out a half-hearted laugh. “Just have Nini be Ricky’s partner or something”.
“Ok...” Red said as he awkwardly exited the room, slightly tripping on her bedroom frame.
Gina grabbed the small box filled with thick string and began braiding an intricate design on a bracelet she had been working on the past week.
She heard a small tap on the door and looked up from her bracelet.
“Hey Nini, what’s up?”
“Are you alright?” Nini asked, approaching and slowly sitting on the edge of Gina’s bed.
Gina sat up from laying on her stomach and let her back fall into her pillows. She began fumbling with her bracelet again.
“I’m good. Why wouldn’t I be?”
“Well... you left the game kind of... abruptly?”
Gina shrugged.
“Alright, I’m just going to ask. I don’t want to beat around the bush. Is this about Ricky and me?”
Gina scoffed. “Hah! No. Why would it be? Why would I care if the guy I got close to and hung out with for weeks turned around and found someone else right after I left? We were just friends. No big. It’s chill or whatever..”
This stung Nini a little- because it’s what she did to Ricky.
Nini let out a breath. She couldn’t believe what she was about to say next.
“Ricky liked you too”.
Gina dropped the bracelet.
“What?! I- I- mean... what?!! I never said I liked him”.
“It’s ok, Gina. It was obvious you did. I couldn’t blame you. I was pretty jealous. And yes, Ricky and I are together, but things haven’t been the same since. He never said he liked you, but he talks about you non-stop. And he’s the one who suggested we bring you cookies tonight- honestly, I tried to stop him. I don’t think he ever stopped liking you”.
Gina didn’t understand.
“W-why are you telling me this? You said you’re together with him”.
“Because I think I’m realizing what I realized before I got back with him the second time. I don’t want someone who’s only half-in. I deserve to have someone who wants me completely and so do you”.
“Are... you saying you want me to be with Ricky?”
“I’m saying, let’s see where things go”. Nini gently touched Gina’s hand. “But please don’t let some boy come in between our friendship and this party. I thought we were starting to become friends again before you moved”.
Gina laughed thinking of Thanksgiving and almost getting to have a sleepover. “We were, weren’t we?”
“So come just enjoy Christmas with your friends, ok? No matter what happens, we’re all family and that’s what matters”.
Gina smiled. Nini grabbed her hand and they walked downstairs. Everyone was eating ham and smiling and joking around. Gina was glad Nini came when she did. She would have been bummed to miss out on everything.
“Hey Gina! Glad to see you join us again!” Jenn said with a big grin.
“There’s some ham left on the stove!” Mike piped in, standing next to her.
Gina made herself a plate and walked quietly around the room. She saw an empty seat next to Ricky.
“May I sit here?” She said with a soft smile.
Ricky’s face beamed. “All yours”.
Nini glanced over at them and smiled. She went and sat at the small table with Kourtney and Ashlyn.
Red, Carlos, Seb, Gina, and Ricky sat and laughed and cracked jokes about the play and things that went wrong that none of the audience would have noticed. Gina couldn’t help but feel right at home with them. She and Ricky exchanged a small glance and she blushed as she looked away.
“Hey, do you want to play the switch, Ricky?” Red asked.
“It wouldn’t be a normal Christmas Eve without it”.
The night passed with video games, the girls doing each other’s hair, a lot of snacks, a small living room karaoke session, and a wild game of sardines. People had began to fall asleep in random places throughout Gina’s house. Some on the floor, couches, her mom’s bed and even Jenn had an emergency blow up mattress in her car she brought in.
Red and Ricky were the only other two up still playing video games at about 3 am. Gina decided to turn in and go to sleep.
Ricky jumped up and ran over to her while Red pretended not to listen.
“Hey Gina?”
“Yeah?”
“Thanks for letting us stay here. It was really nice of you guys.”
“Well, we didn’t really have a choice,” Gina giggled. “It was over -45 outside. You would’ve frozen immediately”.
“True,” Ricky smiled.
They stood in silence for a moment.
“Good night, Ricky”.
“Good night, Gina. Merry Christmas”.
Gina began to walk to the staircase, laid her hand on it, turned around and gave a soft smile to Ricky, and then walked back up the stairs.
The next morning, Gina went into her hall closet and got out the emergency stash of tooth brushes her mom keeps. Because they have times when they frequently run low on money, her mom keeps a large collection of necessaries handy (when she does get paid), for emergencies. Things like soap, shampoo, tooth paste, and tooth brushes that are long lasting are among the stored parts.
She placed a tooth brush and mini tooth paste from previous dentist visits next to each person, so when they woke up at least they could brush their teeth.
She then went into the kitchen and got out a frozen loaf of toast to thaw and the filled carton of eggs. It wasn’t much, but hopefully it could tide everyone over until the city was cleared to be on the roads again. Nini and Mike were among the first to wake up, with Jenn and Red the last. (Red also woke up in his own drool puddle, but no one was surprised. Ricky was just thankful he didn’t bring any of his “sleeping gear”).
Everyone sat around and ate breakfast, called families, and watched Elf. During Elf, Gina noticed Nini lay her head on Ricky’s shoulder, feeling like their conversation last night was too good to be true. But she could have sworn she caught Ricky giving her a couple glances...
The morning was quickly dissembling when Gina watched Nini and Ricky walk off to another room after the movie finished while everyone else helped clean up decorations and garbage from the day before.
Seb was on his phone when he screeched, “FINALLY. WE CAN GO HOME”.
Carlos looked at him, concerned. “Seb, honey, you ok?”
“I WAS GOING CRAZY. I WAS TRYING TO BE NICE BUT I HATE ENCLOSED SPACES. I CANT BREATHE AND I WANT TO GO HOME. THIS STORM IS OVER- thanks again, Gina- BUT LET’S GOOOO”.
Carlos just shook his head and giggled. They were definitely the first to leave. Red, Ashlyn and EJ were next. Mike walked Miss Jenn to her car, while Nini and Kourtney were in Gina’s room talking. Gina was watching Mike give Jenn a hug when she heard Ricky’s voice behind her.
“You think she’s going to be my new mom?”
“I don’t know. Would you be upset if she was?”
Ricky smiled. “I don’t know”.
Gina watched them talk a few more seconds and then turned around. “Listen, Ricky, about last night...”
“It’s no worries. I get it’s been a little weird between us...”
“A little?!-“
“-ok a lot-”
“-We’ve hardly talked! I mean I get you’re in a relationship and all-“
“What relationship?”
“... with Nini?” Gina asked confused.
“Yeah... I think we decided during Elf to put the breaks on that”.
“Is that why you left?”
“Yeah... Nini feels like she needs to find herself without someone.... whatever that means”.
Gina felt a little tingle swirl in her stomach. She repressed the smile that was beginning to take over her face.
“Well... that’s just a big bummer then”. The statement came out a lot more sarcastic than Gina intended, but luckily Ricky didn’t notice because he giggled back.
“Yeah, a real bummer”.
Nini and Kourtney came down the stairs.
“Ready to go?” She smiled at Ricky.
“Sure,” he smiled back politely.
“Thank you so much,” said Kourtney to Gina.
“Yes, thank you. We owe you. You sure you’re going to be ok? I don’t want to leave you alone on Christmas,” echoed Nini.
“I promise, I’m good. My mom will be home in like, an hour, tops. You guys go enjoy your missed time with your families. They need it too,” Gina reassures them.
“Ok, well, Merry Christmas,” Nini said.
The others copied this sentiment with some goodbye’s and a giant group hug before they headed out the door.
Nini smiled as she locked the door behind them and went over to the kitchen counter. The gifts! They had been so wrapped up in the fun, they never opened the gifts. Gina hurried and look at the tags to see who they belonged to so she could return the presents to their rightful owners.
The one from Miss Jenn was definitely for her so she decided not to make that call... but who’s was Red’s for? Gina looked at the tag.
To: Gina
From: Ricky
Gina set both presents down at the table and slowly pulled the paper maché from the gift bag from Miss Jenn. She had given Gina a handmade ornament that looked like a little cartoon version of herself with a small name plaque that read “Taylor”. Gina smiled as she stared at the detailing on the little figurine. It was so thoughtful and she appreciated Miss Jenn coming over in the first place. Regardless of what actually happened last night, Gina couldn’t help but appreciate how much fun she would have had with Miss Jenn alone. She really was an amazing teacher.
Then she pulled the other little bag towards her and carefully pulled the paper out of it. Inside was a knitted scarf. There were multiple colors in no particular pattern and parts of it had looser seams than others. Gina wrapped the scarf around her neck- it smelt like Ricky. It smelt like home.
Just then she heard the door bell ring. She stood up to answer it, but then realized her scarf was still on. She fought it like a snake wrapped around her neck. When it was finally done suffocating her, she ran to the door.
She swung it open and Ricky bolted in, slamming the door behind him.
“I forgot to give you your present!!!”
Gina giggled, “no you didn’t.” She nodded toward her table.
Ricky giggled. “It’s so bad. I’m so sorry. I was just trying to do this really nice thing-“
“Ricky, stop,” Gina said as she laid a hand on his shoulder. “I love it”.
Ricky blushed as he hung his for a second.
He began to walk back towards the door but as he reached for the handle, he dropped his hand. “Oh and Gina?”
“Yeah?”
“I meant what I said about how nice it was that you let us stay here. I don’t even think I realized how much I appreciated it when I said it”.
He then leaned over and gave Gina a soft peck on the cheek, making her entire body relax with this one small moment.
“Merry Christmas, Gina”.
She smiled and said, “Merry Christmas,” softly as he closed the door behind him.
Gina then walked over, wrapped her colorful scarf around her neck, put her little ornament up to her cheek, and did a small happy dance. This happy dance broke into full on spins. And as she moved and hummed throughout the bottom half of her house, she promised to herself that she would not forget about her best Christmas ever.

These Fanfics of Shin and Carla of nice and all...but we want the story on how Carla Tsukinami stoke your ham sandwich! The greedy bast*rd he is...
Anon, this is one of my favourite asks ever and I love you. Thank you so much for giving me an opportunity to shamelessly insert myself into the world of DL I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it :)
I wrote myself as a nameless herione (because I don’t think most of you know my name) which also means you can treat it as a reader insert if you want to, but bare in mind this is based on how I would react in this situation and there are some details that are a bit specific to me.
“Hm, I wonder if I’m allowed up here?” The girl glanced back at the door to the rooftop of Ryoutei Academy, trying to spot any sort of kanji that could translate to “Keep Out” but found none. Shrugging to herself she concluded that if anyone caught her up here when she wasn’t supposed to be, then she would have to play the confused foreign student card and hope for the best.
A mild scolding seemed better than going back to the cafeteria anyway.
She looked down at the slightly sorry looking lunchbox in her hands and loosed a sigh. It was only her second day at her new school and already she felt herself desperately missing her friends and the familiarity of her old school.
The other students had all been pleasant enough- aside from the boy with glasses in her class, who she’d caught eyeing the hemline of her skirt with obvious disapproval, as though it was somehow her fault that whoever made the school uniform had not done so with five foot nine female transfer students in mind- but the thought of trying to navigate getting food when almost all of the signs were in kanji she didn’t recognize made her gut roll with anxiety.
Besides at least the rooftop was pretty, with troughs of well kept roses lining the space and a perfect view of Kaminashi town, just beyond the iron railing, the lights from the small shopping district a warm glow against the midnight blue sky.
The girl walked over to the edge of the rooftop, intent on giving herself a moment to admire the townscape when a nearby rose caught her eye. It’s petals were such a dark red, they looked almost black in the modest illumination provided by the few lights lining the roof. She crouched down on the balls of her feet and set her lunchbox carefully to the side. Something about the scene, the dark flower with the night sky behind it, made her fingers itch with the urge to sketch it.
“I don’t think I could do the dark colors justice with my watercolors and I can’t do realism with markers so maybe colored pencils would be best?” She muttered to herself she tried to find the perfect angle for some reference photos she could use later, while reaching into her pocket for her phone. “Acrylics could work I guess but I don’t have any canvas here and I-”
“What are you doing?” A low voice came from right beside her ear. The girl let out a high-pitched shriek and jolted in surprise, barely catching her balance in time.
She loosed a breath before turning her head in the direction of whoever had spoken, but before she could, they spoke again.
“Hahh, that’s no good… Hmph!” A rough shove sent her sprawling into the roses. Thorns scratched at her skin and she cursed as her hands plunged in the damp mulch, just barely stopping her from face-planting into the dirt. The rest of her however, was not so lucky, and she knew from the way her torso had landed in the soil that her skirt’s hemline had just become the least of her worries as far as her uniform was concerned.
A cruel laugh came from behind her and she turned to look up, filled with some mixture of anger and embarrassment.
But whatever had been brewing petered out the moment she laid eyes on the culprit. He was quite possibly the most beautiful boy she’d ever seen; short choppy, strawberry blonde hair framed pale face with an eye the most incredible shade of gold.
He was utterly stunning.
The effect was promptly ruined however, when he opened his mouth, face twisting into a sneer.
“Haha, how pathetic, crawling around in the dirt.” He continued to chuckle as she pushed herself up onto her hands and knees, wincing slightly at the way they stung where they’d scraped against the ground.
“Heehhh, aren’t you going to say something?” The boy asked, the humor in his expression dying down as he regarded her as one might a spot of mould on a piece of bread. “Or is it that you’re so stupid, you can’t understand what I’m saying?”
The girl froze slightly, unsure how to navigate whatever was going on. Was this guy a bully? Her strategy for dealing with bullies until now had generally been to avoid them or ignore them, neither of which seemed like a good idea here.
“Oiii Miss idiot, are you going to keep ignoring me until I do something like this?” Before she could react the boy placed a heavy black boot on her hand and started to put his weight onto it.
Shit.
“What do you want from me?” She blurted out, praying silently that she hadn’t messed up the Japanese grammar, which really shouldn’t have been a concern given this encounter could feasibly end with a broken hand.
The pressure stopped briefly and she took the chance to tug her hand out from her under his shoe and get to her feet. The girl was a little surprised to find that the boy was no taller than she was, although his general aura of menace certainly made him intimidating enough without needing any extra height.
“Ah, so you can talk. As for what I want… why don’t we start with an apology for shrieking in my ear earlier? It hurt you know?” He made a show of obnoxiously cleaning out his ear with his finger and the girl found herself completely lost for words. Well, that wasn’t entirely true, there were a lot of words swirling in her brain, all of them English and not to be used amongst polite company.
Biting back the urge to tell him to fuck off, she reminded herself that she was currently alone with this guy on a rooftop and angering him further probably would not end well. “I apologize for shouting in your ear, you surprised me. I’ll be going now.” Lunch forgotten, she went to make a hasty retreat to the rooftop door but was stopped short when the male put himself directly into her path.
“Not so fast, you haven’t answered my question yet. What were you doing up here, sticking your head into the roses like some kind of animal?” The girl tried to keep her breathing even, as she felt panic rise in her veins.
“I wanted to take pictures as drawing references, I didn’t realize that-” an arsehole like you would show up “-someone else was already here, forgive me, I’ll be on my way.” She went to take a step around him, when the boy took a step towards her, forcing her to take one back. Soon her back was pressed up against the railing and she internally cursed.
“You just wanted to draw some pictures of the flowers? Isn’t that a bit childish? Well, I guess you still wear kid’s underwear so I shouldn’t be surprised.” The girl spluttered and instinctively went to yank down her skirt, a slightly ridiculous action, considering he must have seen everything when he pushed her earlier.
“That-that doesn’t have anything to do with it,” she said, eyes on the ground as her face burned with shame. “Please, just let me leave.”
“You know, you still sound pretty demanding for someone who’s shaking and is covered in mud. Also,” he paused, sniffing the air briefly before glancing down at her knees, “ah I wondered where that awful scent was coming from, geez human blood really isn’t appealing at all.” The girl looked at her legs and caught sight of red liquid staining her knees, but that wasn’t what made her pause.
“Human blood? What are you-” A cold dread spread through her as she looked back up at the boy and the inhuman color of his iris. This had to be some sort of awful prank right?
“Oh, maybe I spoke too much, but that reaction isn’t bad, haha. Hey, what do you think I am?” He asked her, opening his mouth just wide enough to reveal a pair of gleaming white fangs.
“That’s… There’s no way… You can’t…” The girl struggled to process the image in front of her, trying to find some sensible sounding explanation. He had to be a nutjob with fake fangs right? A nutjob who liked to terrorize girls on rooftops and happened to go to a night school.
“Ah how boring. Shouldn’t most girls be crying with fear by now? I don’t want to but, would you react a bit more if I pierced you with these fangs?” He lowered his face and panic surged through her. Lunatic or something else, she had no intention of being bitten by him. The girl went to shove him away from her, but before she could blink he had her arms pinned above her head.
“It seems you still haven’t learned that I’m not the sort of person you should fight back against. Hey, how much would it take to make you cry?” His grip on her wrists tightened and she winced at the strength in his grip. “Your wrists are pretty thin, I’d barely have to use any of my strength to snap your bones.”
“Please stop!” She begged, as she silently prayed for someone, anyone to intervene.
“Oi Shin, what are you doing?” An incredibly deep voice came from the entrance to the rooftop and the girl said a silent word of thanks.
“Huh,” Shin looked over his shoulder, allowing the girl a glance at her savior. He was tall, with long white hair, that appeared dyed pink at the tips. A dark scarf covered the lower half of his face, while above it were a pair of piercing golden eyes.
A shudder ran down her spine as her gaze locked with his for a moment, suddenly feeling a lot less safe than she had just a moment ago.
“Ah brother, I was just having a bit of fun.” The girl wasn’t sure which part of this statement horrified her more. That her so called savoir was actually related to the demonic pile of steaming garbage in front of her or that this was Shin’s version of fun.
“That’s enough, we have matters to discuss.” The man walked over from the door to the roof, his footsteps stopping just behind Shin.
“Tch,” Shin let go of her arms, only to grip hold of her chin, moving his face uncomfortably close to hers. “Hey, if you tell anyone about what happened here, I’ll rip your tongue out, got it?” His fangs caught the light as he spoke, and the girl felt very close to tears as she muttered a soft yes.
Shin flashed her that nasty smile of his before letting go. “Well then, get out of here!”
Needing no further prompting, she hastily got away from him, pausing only to grab her school bag. As she did so, she caught sight of her lunchbox in the older boys hands and faltered.
“Go!” Shin yelled and the girl concluded that the ham sandwich and peanut butter flavored chocolate bar contained in the hundred yen tupperware were not worth her life as she borderline ran to the rooftop door, slamming it shut behind her.
***
Carla watched the girl flee from the rooftop with a dispassionate expression.
“What exactly did you do?” He asked, more concerned with trying to keep their low profile as they furthered their objective than anything else.
“Nothing much, I just toyed with her a bit. She’s only a human so it doesn’t really matter does it? More importantly, why did you keep hold of that?” Shin nodded towards the plastic container in Carla’s hands.
Carla said nothing as he opened up the box and pulled out a modest sandwich wrapped neatly in clingfilm. Removing some of the wrap, he sniffed it briefly before muttering.
“I thought so.”
Shin took a deep breath through his nose. “Ah, I see, a dry cured ham sandwich huh?”
“Normally I would never eat something prepared by human hands but to take away the taste of that polluted blood, it can’t be helped.” Carla lowered his scarf and took a bite of the sandwich, chewing a few times as he deemed it to be palatable before swallowing. “Oi Shin, take this.” He threw a plastic wrapped bar at his brother and Shin caught it without effort.
He turned it over in his hands before spotting the reason why his brother had given it to him. “Peanut butter huh? Well at least it seems that girl’s good for something.”

Fic: Parent Trap 4/10 (Keanu x Reader)
Summary: Annie and Hallie are twin sisters who never met until they end up in the same summer camp together. They decide to switch places to see how the other lives. Hallie heads to Los Angeles to meet Keanu, owner of Arch Motorcycle Company, while Annie goes to New York to meet you, rising fashion designer and their aunt. Their plan is simple: get their parents together to make the perfect family. If only it could be that easy… Previous chapters: prologue | 1 2 3:
Author’s notes: So here we are, back with parent trap. I shall remember for future references that I can’t manage two series at once. Anyway, let’s get to it and as usual feedback is always greatly appreciated.
Wordcount: 3404
Warnings: none. Just lots of fluff
You looked away from the blank page of your sketchbook and across the cashier’s counter to Hallie. It had been a couple of days since the girl had returned home and to your surprise, she asked to come to the store with you.
It wasn’t completely unusual for her to come. There was a nice bookstore a couple of stores over and she sometimes liked to spend time reading there. The elderly couple that owned the place pampered Hallie with cookies like she was their grandkid and in turn, she helped them with computer stuff and small tasks around the shop.
What was surprising was to see Hallie browsing the racks of clothes in the store, picking up a few pieces and bringing with her to mirror to check it out, adding this and that accessory to see how she could look on the outfit. Once in a while, she would ask if there were any of them in her size and if she could have it.
That along with all the other odd things you had been noticing about your niece were starting to, well not exactly worry you, more like get you to notice and pay attention even more than usual. It was all small little things, like going off meat and making sure to stylish her hair every morning or how she would try to sneak some ham pieces to Salem to get the cat to come over or how she was always on the phone…
Of course, you didn’t expect her to stay the same forever. Hallie was a teenager, she was growing up, discovering herself and what she liked, who she wanted to be. It was just weird to witness the process and how fast it seemed to be happening. You didn’t remember going through so many changes at once. Then again, your teen years had been spent under Mary’s shadow since she demanded so much attention from your parents.
You were the quiet kid, the one that didn’t give any trouble. Maybe that was why you didn’t feel like much had changed for you. You were always the one that spent hours in your room, either reading or drawing, Mary was the one with all the friends and parties and behavior issues. Now here you were, raising her child, while Mary…
Letting out a sigh at your gloomy thoughts, your attention shifted to the board you built as inspiration for your new collection. Color pallet and textures, geometric figures and flowers and movies and songs, they all called to you whenever you were trying to create, but it almost felt like this time you couldn’t get anything down on paper and it was getting so frustrating.
“You have that look on,” Maggie said, coming from storage with a few new outfits to change the mannequins. “The I can’t draw and I want to punch something look. It’ll come to you. Just be patient.”
“I didn’t know you had a name for it,” you chuckled, setting the pencil aside. “And I can’t afford to be patient, we have bills to pay.”
Once again you sighed, reminded of the three envelops of overdue charges that you stuck in your drawer on Friday. You needed a new collection ASAP and it needed to do well otherwise the store would have to close doors and everything you and Maggie had fought for would be over.
She had been with you since the beginning, the marketing and sales guru to your artistic tendencies. Maggie was the one to suggest the store in the first place. The one who built the website for online shopping… Basically, she was the one that made all of this possible and you couldn’t even deliver your end.
“We still have some savings to hold us until next month,” Maggie assured, squeezing your shoulders. “Just go easy on yourself, enjoy your time with Hallie and it will happen.”
At the mention of your niece’s name, you turned your attention at the girl again. She was spotting one of the dresses on sale, along with the personalized denim jacket you made for her, her battered old converse and a pair of aviators from the store. She looked amazing and stylish and you stood up, picking up the camera you kept in the store.
You were hoping to sneak a picture since you knew Hallie hated them, but as soon as she saw the camera, she actually struck a pose for you. Deciding to think about it later, you snapped several pictures of the girl noticing she had a natural talent for modeling.
“Put this one on, please,” you asked, giving Hallie one of the daisy overshirts from the latest collection and she dutifully obeyed before you led her outside where the light was better.
You got lost in the process of taking pictures. It had been quite a while since you had done it. Usually, Maggie was the one to take pictures for the store social media so you forgot how this could be fun, especially with such a willing model. Hallie worked effortlessly through the suggested poses, only pausing to change outfits, always with a wide smile in her face.
“What do we have here?” the familiar smooth baritone of Jason brought you back to the present and you realized it was almost noon. “Hallie willingly letting her picture to be taken?”
You put the camera down, tilting your head to receive the kiss Jason pressed on your cheek, his hand resting on the small of your back as he looked over at Hallie, which made your attention turn to her as well.
Hallie loved Jason. He was like an uncle to her, but right now she was looking from him to you to the point of contact between you two with a deep frown. You didn’t know why her stare made you self-conscious, but you stepped away so Jason was no longer touching you and offered him a quick smile.
“I guess she was feeling generous,” you joked weakly and Jason at least flashed a smile back, but Hallie didn’t react at all.
“Well, I hope I’m not interrupting. Just thought I could take my two favorite girls to lunch.”
His smile widened all white teeth and sweet dimples. His blue eyes warm and hopeful and you felt the familiar warmth in your chest as you nodded, glancing at Hallie once again.
“That sounds great, doesn’t it, Hal?”
“Sure,” the girl replied dryly. “I’m gonna change.”
She was gone before you could even think about saying anything else, leaving you to stand alone with Jason in awkward silence.
“Is everything ok?” he asked, with a confused frown and you just shrugged because you had no idea.
The walk to the deli was made in a strange silence because every time Jason tried to strike up a conversation, Hallie would just give him monosyllabic responses and whenever he tried to talk to you, she would just give you two this look and any conversation would simply die down.
You wished you knew what was happening, why she was being so cold with Jason, but you couldn’t just ask when he was right there. It would be rude.
“Did I do something?” Jason asked when Hallie excused herself to go to the restroom. “I mean, she’s usually hard to please, but today…”
“I don’t know,” you sighed and shrugged. “She’s just…” you trailed off, unsure what to say because how could you definite it without being weird?
“Anyway…” Jason started, thankfully moving on from the subject. “I ran into Becky yesterday.” You just arched your eyebrow at him in expectation, because whenever he ran into his ex trouble seemed to follow. “She’s helping to organize this fashion show in Los Angeles and one of their designers dropped off last minute so I kinda showed some of your stuff and she was interested.”
You froze, bagel halfway to your mouth. Did you just hear Jason right? He had asked his ex-girlfriend, a woman you couldn’t stand, for a spot on her fashion show on your behalf.
“I know what you’re thinking…” Jason started and you snorted.
“I don’t think so.”
“Seriously, I know you have your issues with Becky, but this a real chance for you and the store.” You hated that he was right.
“When is it gonna be?”
“In two weeks,” he said with a grimace. “And it has to be all-new pieces.”
“Fuck!”
You had been struggling for a month to get anything on paper and now you had to have an entire collection ready in two weeks. You wiped the cream cheese filling that has spilled from your bagel on the napkin and looked out the window. There was no way you could do it. But if you didn’t do it, you’d be missing a huge opportunity.
“Alright,” you sighed, squeezing the bridge of your nose. “Tell her yes.”
“You can do this,” Jason said with a smile, taking your hand across the table. “I believe in you.”
You wished you could be as confident in yourself as Jason seemed to be, but right now a knot of anxiety had just formed in your belly, the loose ends snaking around your chest, squeezing your lungs and making it harder to breathe.
“I should get going,” you sighed, grabbing your things just as Hallie finally emerged from the restroom, her expression lighting up as she noticed you were getting ready to leave. “Talk to you later.”
“Bye Justin!” Hallie called out over her shoulder with a barely disguised smirk as she followed you outside, her own uneaten veggie sub in hand.
“What was that?” you asked with a suspicious frown as the two of you made your way back to the store. “Justin?”
“I messed up his name. Sorry.” She shrugged looking to anyone else like the picture of innocent, but you knew better. So you just stared Hallie down, eyebrow crocked up in expectation, arms crossed over your chest. “Fine!” she sighed. “What’s up with you and Jason?”
You weren’t expecting this question and it took you by surprise, making you start walking again as a way to avoid Hallie’s piercing green eyes. She always had a way to look at you that made you just talk about anything even if she was just a kid and you shouldn’t just tell her everything you were feeling.
“He’s a friend, you know that,” you said trying to take the safe path out of this mess.
“Who’s clearly in love with you and you know it, Dave,” Hallie pointed out, quickening her step so she could step in front of you, making you halt. “Do you love him back?”
Of course, it would be Hallie to voice out the question that had been running through your head for years. Did you love Jason back? A part of you wanted to say yes. He was your best friend and had been with you through thick and thin.
He had been there through your parents’ death and Mary’s crisis and her death… He was there through all. He was that person you called when everything turned to shit and part of you knew you loved him. Of course, you did. You just…
“You love him but you’re not in love with him,” Hallie said with a soft smile and you huffed a breath, relief mixed with surprise. When did your kid turn that perceptive?
“I guess,” you shrugged, wrapping an arm around her shoulder so you could restart their walk. “I don’t really know why. He’s great, he’s just not…”
“What you want,” Hallie cut in, as usual, reading your mind and you nodded. “But do you know what you want?”
You thought about it for a moment, considering all the men you had been in love through your life. It had been many, especially not since Hallie, but there were two or three that left you wishing it could have turned into something more.
“He has to be good with kids,” you said at last. “And have a good sense of humor. He needs to understand that you and the store are my priority right now and he needs to have his own thing. I don’t like clingy guys.” You mused a little more, bottom lip caught between your teeth. “He needs to be kind, you know? And loving and supportive.”
As you spoke, you could see Hallie’s smile growing, her eyes looked brighter and excited like she was in on a secret that you weren’t, but you decided to let it go for the time being.
“And he needs to know how to cook, because you know I’m hopeless,” you joked, making Hallie laugh. “So if you know anyone like that, please send him my way?”
“Absolutely, Dave!” Hallie said with a quick wink just as you reached the store.

Keanu hummed happily as he busied himself with kneading the dough, a big smile on his face at his family was together joking and laughing as they got everything ready for pizza night as per tradition. It was the first since Annie returned from camp so he was determined to make sure she enjoyed it as much as always.
He would never admit it aloud, but ever since she asked for the camp, Keanu had been silently panicking. Annie was the most important person in his life right now and the thought of her growing up and slowly distancing herself, learning to be more and more independent, terrified him.
Keanu knew that he was being irrational. Annie wasn’t a baby anymore. She was a teenager and of course, she needed her independence and he needed to give her that. Help her build her life. And it wasn’t as if he was one of those parents that live for their kids. Yes, Annie was his priority, but he had Arch and his friends and family. He had a life. Which mostly consisted of his work life lately, but it was still a life, right?
Even if he couldn’t remember the last time he went on a real date with someone he really cared about. Maybe it was time to put himself out there again. Keanu wasn’t getting any younger and even if he had more or less gave up on his idea of the perfect little family, he still wanted to have someone in his life. Someone to share things, to love and support and who would do the same for him. Someone who understood Annie’s place in his life as well as Arch’s and how that didn’t mean Keanu would love them any less. Someone to share the wins and losses, someone to be his partner. Someone…
“Ke, I think the dough is good,” Karen called out making him snap out of his musings and look at her.
She was giving him a half-amused, half worried look from where she was cutting up the veggies for the topping. In her eyes, Keanu could see the silent question: was he ok? Did he need to talk about it?
He sighed and surveyed the kitchen. Annie was working on grating the cheese, while her cousin Daisy worked on the sauce. They were talking quietly and laughing like the great friends they were and Keanu smiled.
Even if he didn’t get that partner that he envisioned, he still knew he would be a pretty happy man. He was luckier than most.
“I’m good,” he whispered to Karen, wiping his hand on his apron, so he could pick up the pizza trays and olive oil spray so they could start spreading the dough. She just nodded in reply, her attention turning the two tweens to check their work.
It took longer than usual to get the two pizzas ready for the oven. One completely meat-free for Annie and Daisy and a pepperoni one for himself and Karen. Keanu really admired his daughter's stances on animal cruelty and he knew she wanted to go completely off animal products, but he still couldn’t bring himself to let her. Not yet at least. And it became something they could bond over, cooking together and the least fun bit of cleaning up together too.
“How long until they’re ready?” Annie asked, gathering the topping ingredients to store in the fridge. “I’m starving.”
Keanu checked the timer before turning to Annie to reply just to freeze as she casually popped a piece of pepperoni in her mouth. He glanced at Karen and his sister had the same bewildered expression that he sure was in his own face.
“Annie, what are you doing?” Daisy exclaimed, her tone getting high pitched and Annie stilled, looking at her. “We don’t eat meat!”
Keanu thought Daisy was overreacting a little bit, but the younger girl idolized Annie, following her around like a shadow whenever she came over to spend the summer and mimicking Annie in all possible ways, from her clothes to favorite music genre and lifestyle choices. Daisy had even gone off meat as well and he knew it was more to impress Annie than out of any real belief of her own.
“Right!” Annie said, looking alarmed as she glanced at her cousin. “Well, the camp had such terrible vegetarian options that I have to go back to eating it, but I’m going off again.”
She put the bowl of pepperoni away almost as if it had burned her before flashing a small sheepish smile to everyone in the kitchen. Keanu just shrugged. Sure it was weird because he was pretty sure he remembered something about the vegetarian menu in the camp as a criterion for her choice, but maybe it was just bad?
To him, it wasn’t a big deal. Annie was learning about herself every passing day and she was bound to go through changes. And sure, ever since she came back from camp, those changes seemed more prominent and it almost felt like Keanu was faced with a brand new Annie, but she was his daughter. She would always be his daughter, no matter how many little or big changes she went through.
So he pushed out of his mind, heading off to the back porch with Karen and some wine so they could watch the stars and talk while Daisy and Annie went to her room to do their hairs or something else.
Keanu laid back on one of the porch chairs, keeping a bit of a distance from his sister as he puffed in his cigarette, deep in thought. He could hear Karen shifting in her own seat, her intense gaze, much like his own, set on him.
“So mom is coming over next week,” she said conversationally and Keanu just nodded. He knew it already. “She has news to share.”
“Which usually means she has a new boyfriend,” Keanu sighed, rubbing his forehead. “Hope he’s not a dick like that Richard guy.”
“Me too,” Karen snorted. “How come our mom has a better love life than us?”
“I have no idea,” Keanu replied with a chuckle of his own. “Maybe we should ask for tips or something.”
“Maybe.”
“Or maybe we should accept the fate that we’re gonna die single and alone,” he joked dryly and Karen snorted.
“Aren’t you cheerful person, tonight?” she said, giving him the sideways glance. “Is that what got you so moody? Singlehood?”
“Not moody, just…” he paused, considering his words, but he couldn’t find a way to really describe it. “I’m 55. Maybe it’s time to just let go. Dating, I mean. I have my family and Arch and my friends… that’s enough, right?”
“Ke…” Karen let out a long exhale and once again he could feel her gaze on him, heavy and worried. “You’ve always wanted to get married. Maybe it’s taking a bit longer, but you’re gonna find that right person. I’m sure of it.” She reached over to squeeze his hand. “I bet they’re somewhere out there and when time is right, they’ll come into your life. I do believe in fate, you know?”
“Well, could you tell fate to hurry the fuck up?” Keanu joked with a grin, squeezing Karen’s hand back to let her know he was alright and that she didn’t need to worry about him.
And even if she was wrong. Even if that person never came, Keanu knew he would be alright. He had everything he needed right here.
