Togepi’s Secret
Tumblr media
This is the very first Togepi card ever released, from the Neo Genesis set. It has Poison Barb as an attack. That’s a bit weird, right?
Tumblr media
This one is the second ever Togepi card, released as a Wizards Black Star Promo... except over in Japan, this card was released before the Neo Genesis one, in 1999. If you don’t notice anything odd about this one, check the Pokedex description:
Still only a hatchling, it uses poison to chase off its enemies when threatened.
This Pokedex entry mentions poison again, and it’s not actually used anywhere in the games.
The reason this is relevant is that beta/unused Pokedex entries have been known to end up on early Pokemon Cards before. This makes it very likely that this card’s description was once Togepi’s beta Pokedex entry, which hadn’t yet been updated at the time of this card’s release in 1999.
Tumblr media
Finally, there’s this card from Southern Islands. The scan makes this almost unreadable, but the description on this one reads:
This Pokémon is still immature. When threatened, it releases poison from its head and tries to drive its enemies away.
This was the third Togepi card ever released. After this point, the descriptions start lining up with the Pokedex entries we actually got.
Basically, the implication of all this is that Togepi was originally designed to be a poison-type. Those seemingly random spikes on its head were meant to be its way of distributing poison.
Note that its category, the “Spike Ball Pokemon”, probably references this beta, as something like the “Egg Pokemon” would be more fitting with the final version. Likewise, its Japanese name references spikes as well. To quote Bulbapedia:
Togepi and Togepy may be a combination of 刺 toge (spike) and ピヨピヨ piyopiyo (onomatopoeia for a bird chirping).
Also worth noting is the Spaceworld demo. While Togepi is a normal-type in the 1997 build, The Cutting Room Floor notes this:
Dex placement indicates a late addition. Is quite larger than its final counterpart. Has no evolution.
It being a late addition is likely due to it having been revised from the earlier poison-type version, which may have had a different design. The fact that it was larger and didn’t evolve meant that either it was intended as a single-stager originally, or it had a poison-type evo that had already been scrapped by the time this demo was created.
TL;DR: Togepi was likely a poison-type at one point in Gen 2’s development.

Pokemas having safe writing for protags is SO TRUE, esp for the girls. They all have the same sweet, ‘flower girl’ personality, which is fine on its own! It’s just that when they all have the exact same personality, it gets irritating. From Kris to May to Hilda to whoever else, they all act pretty much the same besides one or two quickly forgotten quirks here and there, which really sucks. Looking up their mas quotes on bulbapedia really shows how little substance they have.
Surprisingly, the male protags don’t fair much better (poor Victor and Lucas barely have anything) but at least there’s *something* there that distinguishes them personality wise. Ethan is kind, Brendan is confident (and has a dad), Lucas is a sorta awkward nerd, etc. While still one dimensional, they’re at least distinguishable from one another. The gacha brainrot is so incredibly real.
nevertheless, do not let this type of safe writing discourage you. take everything these characters say anyway and work from it. kris wants to learn EVERYTHING, perhaps mostly about ecology. shes a pretty dang overworked professor to me. lyra talks about red a lot, what kind of shenanigans can i create from these two personalities? dawn will be all haha about barry being so impatient, but sometimes its like its HER thats even more of an impatient worrywart. and so on and so on.
and well... seriously its okay to make stuff up if nothing else. because people already do that all the time with dudes.

Some interesting tidbits about Tabitha's personality
Hello everyone!
I've found out interesting tidbits about Tabitha's personality in ORAS. Yesterday, I was looking at his quotes from ORAS at the Pokémon Wiki, which is a Japanese encyclopedia about anything Pokémon related, similar to Bulbapedia. I used machine translators, so even if they weren't 100% accurate, I've still found out some interesting stuff. If you want to read his quotes, here is the link!
Tabitha often uses "watakushi" as his personal pronoun. What is special with this personal pronoun? It's more formal than "watashi". According to the TvTropes page for Japanese pronouns, this is what is to be said about "watakushi":
"An ultra-formal term, often used in anime by characters who are profusely polite, very sophisticated, or somewhat old-fashioned. Fictional royalty tends to use this, especially princesses and the like. The archetypal Ojou pairs it with frequent use of the emphatic sentence ending わ (wa). It's also used in place of watashi in very formal speech (for example, a job interview). A more feminine variant is atakushi あたくし."
He uses "watakushi" in Pokémon Masters too. He uses it when he introduces himself for example. Here is a video with all his voicelines in Japanese.
Tabitha uses "watashi" sometimes though. An example of this is after you defeat him at the Weather Institute, he uses it when he talks about Maxie going to Mt. Pyre.
In conclusion, Tabitha speaks in a formal and polite way!

Omfg, you're so right I totally forgot about the Klinklangs!! Which, lmao, you can also get in chargestone cave and it evolves at level 38. This is so funny for them if these are like, their first five pokemon, and they got four of them at the same cave, and litwick you can get pretty much right next door to it if I'm remembering it correctly. I don't know why, but this is so funny to me. Maybe they got their klinks because their starters were just way too squishy, so they needed something that could tank a few hits and of course they were going to pick steel types for that because they love them.
God, grinding litwick, tynamo, and joltik from level 5... they are very hard workers and had to have been good at strategy to make it work the whole way through. They're definitely more dedicated than a lot of trainers, who just want whatever is strongest. I know that like a blitzle probably would have worked out better in terms of power levels, but when has that ever stopped them from just using their faves? Their team comps are terrible as adults, but they clearly are just ones that they like best, screw getting ones solely to make their teams more comprehensive.
And yes!! They were definitely already sharing pokemon, probably pretty much from the start. As you said, they're a team, and more than anything else their absolute specialty is multi battles. (I like to imagine that Tate and Liza really look up to them lol)
Which... makes me have a lot of feelings suddenly about that fight in Ounce of Prevention?? If Ingo, despite not having any memories of it, was subconsciously training his pokemon to work well in multi battles. You know how in the game, when you fight him he actually says Emmet's lines, not his own? What if he was also training them sometimes the way Emmet would his own? And that's why they worked so easily with him, because they already knew his signals. They share pokemon so much that Ingo just automatically started preparing them to work like they would if Emmet needed them for a double battle
"You know how in the game, when you fight him he actually says Emmet's lines, not his own?"
ok kind of addressing the last thing first but you have no idea how fast i ran to check this in my pla copy when bulbapedia didn't have the training grounds quotes and oh my fucking god he does... "Follow the rules and drive safely! We're headed for victory! All aboard!" it's not 1:1 but those are so obviously emmet's lines. SPECIFICALLY his multis lines! i'm going to cry how am i possibly supposed to handle this! ingo!!!!
...i actually was about to type the rest of this post but i decided to actually finish the battle against him, just for the hell of it and to see what he said afterwards, and guys. fucking. "Sometimes I find myself saying things without knowing where the words come from... yet those words seem to fill me with power. But returning to the matter at hand: I hope you'll challenge me again sometime." INGO I CAN'T FUCKING TAKE THIS
anyway ahem. normal again. what were we saying. oh right, starters. yeah, klink are still not really on the level of the other pokemon you'd generally be facing in the 30s-40s, being a first evolution, but they're at least sort of defensive (as much as anything can be with that bst, lol) and they have the steel type's nigh-comprehensive type resistance going for them. so yeah those two probably uhhh Carry for a while i'm betting
yeah it's like. they're like these, once-in-a-generation strategy-minded trainers, and they use that power to do whatever they want and use their favorites forever. and honestly good for them. and YEAH THEIR SPECIALTY IS MULTIS... ok tate and liza looking up to them is adorable.
and yeah in ounce of prevention,,, for ingo it was just like he was given some pokemon to train, mostly free rein, and no actual memories to guide him, so he was just like. well, This Is How You Train Pokemon. to respond to all these cues, in a wide variety of strategies, in multiple different battle formats (...battle whats, now?) you teach them to... recognize these signals that you rarely, if ever, use... because it just feels like The Thing To Do... it feels important, for some reason...
...god i'm sorry i'm still not over the fact that ingo says emmet's actual lines and then proceeds to muse that those words seem to fill me with power. how am i POSSIBLY supposed to deal with this. lies down on the floor

hey so i saw the Gary Oak post and it involved pokemon masters and i could've sworn that the characters in pokemon masters are not the same ones from the main games? i wasn't sure though where i heard that from and i didn't want to say anything based on hearsay or my own faulty memory, and I'm not too versed in your criteria of who is or isn't the same character. Bulbapedia *does* have separate pages for masters version of characters which say they're "based" on the ones in the main games? so i guess do with that what you will? (here's Brock's masters page as an example)
Tumblr media
I feel pretty good about saying that "based on" isn't asserting anything about character identity beyond "hey maybe they look a bit different." I have likewise seen nothing that suggests that they aren't the characters in question. Pragmatically, I suspect the separate pages on Bulbapedia are to keep the pages from ballooning in size, given that Masters EX info takes a hefty amount of space on its own. The Quotes subpages also include the Masters EX quotes, so there's that.
Even if all of that wasn't true, though, they all pass the duck test with flying colors, so it's ultimately a moot point.

Yea you do learn Ns name here you go, I've never played so I dunno XD
Tumblr media
oh no i do know his full name! but as far as i remember said name was never actually IN the games, it was on game freak's website. at least thats what i'm getting from bulbapedia since it lists that as the source of n's full name and not an ingame quote or smth
while writing this i did remember the game reveals the harmonia part of his name but not the gropius part, or that n was short for anything

Oh my gosh I love the design of Cinna!! Curious, but what would their Pokemon battle quotes be? Things like victory, defeat, their Pokemon landing a super effective hit, their Pokemon taking a super effective hit, Pokemon on low HP, Pokemon fainting, low HP victory, stuff like that?
Welp, guess the name Cinna's sticking for her then, good thing the only Bulbapedia results for "cinna" gave me stuff related to Cinnabar Island so I don't have another Mira situation hehe X3
I would have to think about that sort of thing more before I just spat out an answer, tbh. Though I suppose there'd be a general theme of referencing cinematic techniques, comparing the battle to the art of film, stuff like that. Like I said on my art of her, Cinna's region is one I'm still very much in the planning stages for--only three characters have any design work done for them, besides her there's also the professor and the champion, and none of the 'mons are designed besides a rough sketch of the starters--and as her region's actually going to be my fourth Fakemon region out of four (not counting any potential Legends-style ideas that might spring forth) I really should be prioritizing that sort of thing for characters from my current region of focus. ...Heck, I don't think I have anything so specific figured out for the Cantessy characters, now that I'm giving this more thought, and I'm actively writing a fic version of that hypothetical "game" XD Some good food for thought, though! Thanks for giving my brain something to ponder over, hehe :3
(fun fact: I didn't consciously realize it until shortly after I'd made the decision and was trying to figure out why the names felt like they belonged together, but Cinna's Ditto partners ended up being named after the two main characters of I Love Lucy [Lucille Ball and Ricky Ricardo], and yeah that was TV and not film but they're similar enough mediums for me to count that as a retroactively intentional reference hehe)

i was the one who uploaded both nemona and (the rest of) geeta’s quotes to bulbapedia, it was smth that really stood out to me too as i was rereading the game’s text files/transcript
mostly because when it comes out of nemona’s mouth, it feels rehearsed, in a way, a verbal reminder to herself that she deems important enough to repeat and keep in mind
"I know La Primera’s watching, but no need to get worked up. Just stay cool!" "Haha, wow! You seeing this, Primera? I’m getting backed right into a corner!" "Did battling in front of La Primera give you the jitters, maybe?"
these lines during the battle with geeta watching, also feels related to the subject of how nemona presents herself... there’s moments where, in the presence of the player, nemona finds difficulty keeping composure (hence geeta mentioning how it can be unsual to see nemona excited)
"I thought you were too busy to spend your time checking in on Gyms!"
"Even La Primera seems like she wants to keep an eye on you..." "Maybe I’ll go find her so we can cheer you on together when you battle the Gym Leader!"
these lines here also pique my interest, because they imply that nemona might reach out to probably ask geeta for a battle (or in the champion storyline, to get geeta to come watch you battle) though geeta has likely frequently turned her down in the past, on the account of being so busy being chairwoman of the league, being on the school board, and being champion
"I got word from La Primera when you cleared the Elite Test!"
they’re in enough contact where geeta will contact nemona for something not even directly related to asking for a favor, such as telling nemona that you’ve beaten the elite test
and of course. the thing about how nemona holds herself back when battling geeta, and how geeta knows this:
"The respect you two share is palpable. Even a bit enviable, to be honest." "I am known as La Primera—but even when facing me in the final test of her Champion Assessment, Champion Nemona didn’t reveal her full might." "In you, I suspect she has found someone she can battle without holding anything back."
its extremely intriguing because you see nemona idolize geeta, and yet, she holds herself back when battling geeta. whats more is that geeta describes this as “enviable respect”, which could mean that geeta may feel perhaps a little hurt that nemona holds back for whatever reason
"Show this inspection thing who’s boss so that La Primera can join our tournament, OK?"
yet, despite holding back on geeta, nemona is really excited for the possibility for geeta to have enough free time to join the tournament
anyways.. yeah i agree, its an incredibly interesting dynamic
a few thougts on geeta and nemona
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kind of Obsessed with how we hear Nemona say that Champions have to be understanding bcs its like, a statement that originally stood out to me? like a 'oh they do? since when? am i supposed to know thats a rule?" but like... then at the end you have geeta specfically telling Nemona that and it just kinda clicks like... i wonder how many times Geeta's told her that.
It's such an incredably interesting dynamic, like you have to rememer its not just Nemona hero-worshipping Geeta. They're close enough Geeta asks favours of Nemona. It's like some sort of unoffical unspoken mentor mentee thing.
Tumblr media
That line in paticular strikes me so hard, because there's this sense that like. The excitable overeager joy we associate w/ Nemona isn't even regular for her. ough... What is she like in her typical intereactions w/ Geeta? how does she present to various people? what about geeta? her presentation reads as so distilled to me, i wonder how much of herself she shows.
theyre so endearing to me, I want to see so much more!!!! i have more to say but like.. for the sake of this not being a long post just know i am constantly thinking about them.

hoenn
Most Johto citizens know the story behind Ecruteak city, just like how most Hoenn citizens know of the legend that Hoenn was formed when Groudon and Kyogre formed the land and sea. They probably have things like: legend has it that Regigigas was sent to sleep in Sinnoh (near Hoenn, according to Bulbapedia), but three keys leading to its awakening were hidden throughout Hoenn (the three Regis). Bulbapedia notes that Hoenn's cities and town are immersed in nature, as compared to other regions.
The Hoenn region has tropical-like environments, and the region also introduced the idea differing weather (constant rainfall, thunderstorms, falling ash, and rays of sunlight). Hoenn is likely an equatorial region, as its temperate is more humid/warmer (beaches, frequent thunderstorms, the area with tall grass where you can find Tropius...)
They probably also have legends about Mirage Island (Wynaut and Wobbuffet) and Mirage Tower (Rayquaza). The difference is that some people have actually been to Mirage Island (I think it only appears if you surf a certain way or after a rainy day or something like that) but Mirage Tower is pretty much seen as a myth.
Bulbapedia: "The Hoenn region boasts many dramatic environments from rainforests to deserts, but its most striking feature is its abundance of water, a strong contrast to other core series regions, especially Sinnoh. Much of the region is covered in water, almost equal in size to the mainland, exemplifying the theme of the games. There are several large and populated islands off the mainland only accessible via water routes, many of which are deep enough for diving." > So water sports are probably a common regional past time. A large portion of the citizens probably have Pokemon that can Surf and/or Dive.
Bulbapedia: "Much of the interior area is forested or mountainous, so most notable cities are found on the coastline. People who live in towns and villages in the mountain areas must adapt to the harsh environment. An extreme example of this is the inhabitants of Fortree City, who live in tree houses. This is in stark contrast to other regions in the Pokémon world, as noted by Ruby in Pokémon Adventures, who preferred Johto's many modernized cities to the wilderness and countryside in Hoenn.”

Mun donut just wanted an excuse to ramble about Emmet’s dialogue. And also I guess tips for those who might have a hard time writing Emmet
I’ve been musing Emmet for upwards of two years now, and while I am certainly far from the best portrayal of him (seriously, some of you guys are so cool), I think it’d be beneficial to at least have one post analyzing his speech patterns on here.
If anyone is interested in seeing me list references and overanalyze Emmet’s speech patterns, I’ll have it all under the cut :)
// I’m making too many edits to this so I’ll just list the changes at the end of the post Last edit: 19.07.2022
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To preface, Emmet is very clearly autistic. Please keep that in mind while portraying him and make sure you aren’t falling into ableist stereotypes.  There are many wonderful autistic (as well as other wonderfully neurodivergent) people in this community, so I’d suggest looking to them for advice or guidance (though, you should make sure they are alright with sharing, of course! Please do not nag people who do not want to talk.)
I also highly suggest reading this post outlining some of the ableist characterizations in the submas community and why they are harmful. Please try to commit its messages to memory, they are CRUCIAL!! For those of you hesitant to read such a long post, I’ll also include a shorter list of the posts’ relevant points here as well:
Emmet’s “simple” speech and smiley demeanor have made infantilizing characterizations an easy pitfall for some to fall through. Autistic and neurodivergent people have been infantilized as a form of ableism, so please ensure you steer clear of that!
Seeing Emmet express strong negative emotions in an unhealthy way can be a harmful or insensitive characterization if taken to an unrealistic or extreme point.
Before proceeding with writing, ask yourself why you’ve decided to portray Emmet in a certain way, and if that “reason” perpetrates narratives that may be harmful to neurodivergent (as well as mentally ill) communities.
Now, with that out of the way, I’ll actually start this ramble haha.
Let’s Talk References!
There are quite a few places that you can turn to for references, but my go-to source is Bulbapedia! It’s one of the most reliable sources we have in the Pokemon community, too, so if you want canonical lore about anything, you can go here as well! If you have not consulted Emmet’s quote page, bookmarked it, or left it sitting on your browser window for the rest of eternity then I suggest you take a minute to do at least one of those :>.
There are also multitudes of resources for you to stream official content online, which has been compiled in this neat little masterpost. It includes links to find things from Pokemon BW and BW2, Pokemon Masters, the Pokemon Anime, and Pokemon Special. I highly suggest scrolling all the way down to the reblog portion- @/mala-sadas linked an awesome website that host Pokemon Special Scans- not to mention a whole bunch of spinoff mangas. There shouldn’t be any ads either :>
Any sort of canonical information would be ideal to use as reference, though I personally would advise against using the anime. It’s entertaining to watch, but there is much more nuance to be found in his other portrayals.
Unfortunately I haven’t read that much fanfiction lately, but heart hungry like a fire (cw cursing, only a sprinkle of angst) definitely has my favourite interpretation of Emmet :).  Other than that, try reading fanfiction where the submas are portrayed similarly to how you’d like to portray them!
Keeping his autism in mind also, I’d also like to direct you to @/1863-project’s posts on Emmet (if you have not heard of her, please visit her blog! She’s a very nice and funny person and is always happy to inform people about submas, trains, and autism :>). She’s made many a post about autistic submas and the important ones are linked on her pinned post, but I’ll link some of helpful ones down here as well:
Emmet from Pokemon Gen V is Autistic, Fight Me - This highlights the specific Autistic traits that Emmet exhibits (Scripting, Stiff Dialogue, etc) and gives possible reasoning as well. Cool, huh?
A Verrrry Short Look At A Verbal Tic - crying why is the title so good for this one?? But yeah it’s just a brief overview of Emmet’s “verrrrrrrry” verbal tic
A Few Lists of Train Terminologies - Many people seem to struggle with Ingo and Emmet’s train lingo so I think it’s worthy to add here as well. (The last two links are probably more relevant for the purposes of this post, though)
Man, I totally forgot to link a particularly fun ramble made by my friend @/kotekie!! I’ve talked about it here before but it deserves a spot on this post:
Ingo, Emmet, Dialogue, and Truth and Ideals - A ramble about how Ingo and Emmet’s dialogue actually ties into the Truth/Ideal theme that BW/2 has going on. Reading this can give you a certain mindset to frame their dialogue in, so I highly recommend checking it out!
Analysis Time!
Arceus, you thought I would’ve already gotten here by now, right? This is just me rambling about things I’ve noticed specifically about Emmet’s dialogue and what I try to apply when I go in-character with him.
Let’s start with his dialogue after he beats you on the Super Multi train:
Tumblr media
First of all: AW,, HE IS SO ENDEARING I AM GOING TO CRY-
Second! This is a clear example of one of the trademark aspects of his speech: short and choppy sentences. His ideas tend to spread out among multiple different sentences. For example, the “I won against you. But this is not the end.” bit could be combined to form a single sentence, but Emmet tends to stop his sentences after one idea / clause (making them very short).  Thanks to this, his speech is extremely direct. What he says, he means. There is verrrrry little extraneous details added. In short: keep his dialogue short, and to the point.
It’s a very striking quality that very few Pokemon characters have, and it’s most definitely the reason why I latched onto his character over three years ago.
He also will occasionally emphasize a certain point with a shorter sentence (sometimes with a repeated word) afterward, such as here:
Tumblr media
and here:
Tumblr media
and here:
Tumblr media
also here:
Tumblr media
and also his semi-rare use of “yup/yep!”:
Tumblr media
But wait! There’s more :>
We see that he has two main scripts in the games- one for himself:
Tumblr media
and one for Subway procedure:
Tumblr media
Looking through the things he says throughout the games, it seems he uses the first one to introduce himself (naturally), though it’s not unusual for him to start his sentences with “I am Emmet.” This has made way for some portrayals to make him refer to himself in the third person, which I think is pretty neat (though he hasn’t really done that in canon).
The subway procedure script replaces the self script when he is battling someone he’s already battled before, like we can see in his pre Super Multi-Train battle dialogue:
Tumblr media
At this point, he’s already infodumped about himself so he goes to the next best thing: subway procedure :)! He also tends to use this script when he’s with Ingo, as Ingo mainly does the introduction for the two of them and gives Emmet the space to chime in when he needs to.
I’ve also noticed that during moments of strong emotion he does tend to drop the choppy sentences thing and use more commas, as we see in his dialogue after being beaten in the Super Multi-Train:
Tumblr media
Three commas! Three! This is also the longest sentence he has in the BW/2 games (and is probably comparable to the length of his sentences in Pokemon Masters- where his dialogue is notably more relaxed).  I think this is meant to convey how fast he’s speaking, as he's too excited pause in-between sentences as he normally does.
Since I’ve also went through the hassle of linking individual manga chapters, I’d also like to analyze some of their appearances in the manga as well! (Note that I’m not using an official translation, so the specifics wording you see here may vary from other translations that exist on the internet!)
Tumblr media
Here, when they introduce themselves, Emmet doesn’t use “I’m” or “I am” before he says his name, which could possibly a nod towards his tendency to speak in shorter sentences? Hm.
Tumblr media
Once they start watching White test out the Battle Subway, we can see Emmet getting rather impatient and excited to see her get better at battling- interrupting Ingo and also bluntly stating his opinion on her skills. Though, this iteration of Emmet is a lot more mischievous than other canonical media (which makes sense- the manga did make a lot of characters sassier, haha).
We can also see that his usual “choppy” speech pattern has been downplayed in the manga, though Emmet’s blunt and excitable personality shines through brightly!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m only putting this here because this is peak sibling dynamic. Specifically using Ingo’s words to tease him is absolutely HILARIOUS to me, and one of the reasons why manga Emmet is my favourite Emmet.
Is that it? Yeah I think that’s it. Feel free to chime in with your own opinions and thoughts and criticisms if you’d like!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit History:
- Clearly, I wrote this while being kinda tired. I fixed up some of the weird wording haha - Added a new reference from @/1863-project, it was made after the post was created and it’s very useful I promise!! - The links to the manga stopped working so I updated it with a new streaming site, hopefully with actually working links now. Also added a ramble from my good friend @/kotekie because I think it shows the functionality of Emmet’s speech in contextualization to BW/2’s themes as well as contrasting it to Ingo’s.  - Added in the “Please Be Careful About How You Portray The Submas” post in the beginning. It seemed kind of odd to say “don’t be ableist” without giving some concrete ways to help avoid that. - Changed my sad links to the manga on a site with nsfw ads to just one- the Submas Official Masterlist post :), including the addition from @/mala-sadas because I just adore jb2448.info.

Pokemon fans, I NEED HELP!
Greetings potential helpers,
I hath started a fic!
(˚v˚) ~ “Ingo in Wonderland” ~ (˚ʌ˚)
An ambitious project (at least for me) that I fully intend to write and complete. The biggest issue is that I urgently require assistance for it to even be finished.
I basically need a buddy or a group of consultants knowledgeable on anything Pokemon. This includes knowledge regarding:
Regions - specifically Unova, modern Sinnoh and Hisui
Storyline of the related main games
Characters - canon backstories, relationships with other characters, role that they play in the main game
Pokemon (mostly from the aforementioned regions)
Pokemon battling mechanics and strategies
Lore and themes/motifs
…And probably some other things that I’ve forgotten to mention
*It’s also highly preferred if you do actually have the games, because I obviously don’t.
I’d like the info to be as canon as possible, although some fanon opinions are also good if there’s a general lack of canon in the first place. Of course, I’ll be consulting Bulbapedia as well but that inevitably has many limitations (there aren’t even quotes for Melli on there smh).
Should you be on board this wonderland train, I’ll mostly be pestering you with questions or points of discussion about these canon-related aspects.
Umm, I’m not sure what’s the best way to go about hosting discussions and I don’t really know how to tumblr… I’m open to any suggestions so just get in contact with me whatever way you can? DMs? Comments? (Also, should I get discord?)
I look forward to working with you! (...if anyone even wants to help *cries*)

Reading over Ingo's dialogue and, wait. Taken from Bulbapedia:
(BW:)
Tumblr media
(BW2, scripted story encounter:)
Tumblr media
That's appropriate, I think. :3
Emmet doesn't have anything as blatantly relevant, but he does have a line about things not being fun if they aren't serious – ie, if you aren't being truthful about how much they mean? – and one about being able to trust your team. And– huh, actually...
Tumblr media
That's not bad either :D
YEAH I REMEMBER SEEING THESE WHEN I WAS DIGGING THROUGH QUOTES FOR RESEARCH!!!! i really am so true and correct /j
I like to imagine Emmet always wanting a Fair and Truthful fight - battling to him is the most honest way of communicating with one another. Ingo loves the Belief involved in battle - belief they can win, resignation they will lose. battling is the best thing for both twins, and it's why they enjoy it so much

This is who I reckon fits well with Scott! If you're interested, I've put my reasoning under the cut
Clockwise from the giant steel bird lol
Skarmory - [Steel/Flying type] Look me in the eye and tell me that this isn't Thunderbird One in the Pokemon universe. You can't, I'm right and I know it. Wings that are hollow and capable of flying at incredible speeds, "clad entirely in ironhard armour". Needs regular maintenance as it can rust in rain and must regrow its wings once a year to keep them sharp.
Quilava - [Fire type] Nimble and quick when attacking, its "fire burns more strongly when it readies to fight" and will demonstrate this before a battle. If you're about to get into a fight - it's already warned you of the potential consequences and you will get scorched as it turns its back on you (this is analogous with Scott's temper in my opinion - always present, ferocious when angry, then warning signs are all there and in a fight he's likely to drop a devastating one-liner that ends the battle)
Ditto - [Normal type] Can transform into anything as needed by the situation, but this can fail when emotions are strong, or if it's relying solely on memory to transform. It "does not get along with fellow Ditto" which I think we can interpret here as strong personalities clash for our purposes.
Marshadow - [Fighting/Ghost type] I honestly chose this one because Scott's always fighting ghosts in his past, BUT it utilises mimicry to learn and "as it improves, it becomes stronger than those it's imitating" which is a Jeff-Scott parallel if I ever heard one.
Arcanine - [Fire type] Brave, loyal and well known for its speed; "running 6,200 miles in 24 hours with a speed and grace reminiscent of flight". Has a loud, commanding bark that people listen to and protective instincts over those it cares for.
Taillow - [Normal/Flying type] Small but courageous and "very gutsy and will stand up to powerful opponents without backing down". Also flies incredible distances when migrating and gets grumpy when hungry ahaha

Pokémon of the Week! #239: Elekid!
Tumblr media
Welcome, nerds, to Pokémon of the Week!
Where I, Sesh, generate a random Pokémon to highlight each week!
Last week, we highlighted the flappin' apple dragon, Flapple! You can find that post down below:
This week, we have our first Pokémon of the Week that isn't a final evolution form. Rather, we have a "baby" form. The pre-evolution of OG Electric-type 'mon, Electabuzz: Elekid!
Tumblr media
Does this energetic, slightly angry "baby" 'mon have anything more to it than being based on an electrical plug?
Let's find out and get to it!
~ORIGINS~
Elekid debuted in 1999's Gold & Silver versions for the GameBoy Color. Generation 2 introduced a handful of "baby" pre-evolutions for some of the OG 151 Pokémon, such as Pichu and Magby. As stated above, Elekid was introduced as the pre-evolution of Electabuzz alongside the other "babies".
Tumblr media
Elekid is a pure Electric-type Pokémon, and lemme just take this opportunity to say how much I LOVE Electric-types! Fire-types are my best true love, but Electric-types are a close second.
Why?
They are only weak to ONE TYPE: Ground.
And that's pretty neat.
In the anime, pro-douchebag rival Paul from the Diamond & Pearl seasons of the anime has an Elekid. It evolved into an Electabuzz later, but dang, is Elekid cute in the anime.
Tumblr media
Other Elekid have made appearance a time or two, and overall, has an iconic look I feel most Pokefans will recognize.
Unfortunately...
I can't really find any super cool lore behind Elekid...
The obvious inspiration for Elekid are American and (to my surprise) Japanese electrical plugs. I had NO IDEA we had the same voltage as Japan here in the states...I need to pay more attention in anime, I guess.
Tumblr media
#shocking
BUT let's move on to what the Pokedex has to say about our angry electric child.
According to Generation 2, Elekid generates electricity by spinning it's arms. It also loves to play while thunderstorms, hoping to steal some delicious electricity from the sky. from "violent thunder".
Tumblr media
Generation 3 Pokedex entries state that when it's charged, it cannot touch metal, or all of the stored electricity it has will discharge.
Oof. Silly little baby Pokémon...learn your BASIC SCIENCE ON CONDUCTIVITY, DUDE.
Generation 4 dex entries add on the fact that Elekid can't store electricity it creates itself, which is why it constantly spins it's arms to charge itself and why it plays in thunderstorms hoping to get struck. It's also made known there's a small electric current that's constantly flowing between it's horns...er, prongs...
Tumblr media
A Generation 5 dex entry states that spinning it's arms to generate electricity gives it's horns a "light blue" color.
Um...ok? Doesn't show in the games or art, but ok. Maybe it's in the anime?
Generation 7 dex entries tell us that...pff...Elekid uses electrical outlets as "baby bottles"...
...right. Guess it sneaks into people's houses to suckle energy from outlets.
Gen 7 also introduces a rivalry between Elekid and Gen 7 Pikachu clone Togedemaru, competing for electricity.
Tumblr media
Gen 7 also gives advice to potential trainers who want to raise an Elekid, saying that since thunderstorms are something they love, "it can be useful to record that sound and play it when Elekid's feeling down."
That's...kind of adorable.
The Legends: Arceus Pokedex says that if you hear children laughing and playing in the wilderness during a thunderstorm, it is actually Elekid playing in the storm.
#creepy
~DESIGN~
Here's Elekid's official artwork:
Tumblr media
Quoted from Elekid's biology section on Bulbapedia:
"Elekid is a yellow, round-bodied Pokémon with black stripes. Elekid's arms are bulky in proportion to its body, and it has three claws instead of fingers. It has two stripes on its arms, which wrap all the way around. There are two horns on top of its head which resemble the prongs of a plug, complete with holes in their sides. These horns glow bluish-white when Elekid is fully charged. Elekid has a black lightning bolt marking on its chest. Two rows of stripes are near the marking, with the pattern continuing around its lower back. Its legs are black, and its feet are rounded and toeless.
Elekid tends to become restless and full-on rowdy when it hears the sound of thunderstorm coming, and likes to play out in the middle of thunderstorms. It can generate electricity by rotating its arms, but it tires easily and can only charge a small amount. Elekid cannot store the electricity it generates, so it prefers to break into the houses of humans in order to consume electricity from their electrical outlets. It lives in the grasslands."
~ADVANTAGES~
As I've said before, the biggest advantage all pure Electric-types have is a weakness to only 1 type: Ground.
Very useful against Water and Flying-types (if this li'l baby knows any good Electric moves).
It's resistant to Steel moves as well (in a throwback to our lesson on Electrical conductivity from earlier).
It's ability, "Static", is a common Electric-type ability. But BOY is it useful. If your Elekid is hit by a physical attack, there's a 30% chance the offender will end up paralyzed. This can even effect Ground-types.
If your Elekid has the hidden ability "Vital Spirit", it CAN'T FALL ASLEEP. That's awesome.
It's pretty fast for a baby Pokemon. It's highest stat is Speed at 95.
~DISADVANTAGES~
It's biggest disadvantage is that it's a baby. Simple as that. It's base stats are all really low (with the exception of it's Speed kind of). Unevolved, it won't be very useful as a endgame Pokémon or against bosses or gym leaders.
Obviously, don't use against Ground-types. #onlyweakness
~HOW TO OBTAIN~
Elekid's been around since Gen 2, so like with Dewgong, buckle up.
In it's debut games Gold & Silver, Elekid can only be obtained by breeding Electabuzz at the Pokemon Daycare and hatching the resulting egg.
In Crystal version, in addition to the breeding tactic, the player can receive an Odd Egg on Route 34 from an NPC. This egg can potentially hatch into any of Gen 2's baby Pokemon, including Elekid.
In all the games in Generation 3, Elekid can only be obtained via breeding Electabuzz in FireRed version and trading it over.
In Diamond & Pearl versions, wild Elekid can be found in Route 205 and by the Valley Windworks (a power plant...which makes sense).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Generation 5, Elekid is a version exclusive Pokémon that can only be obtained in White and White 2 versions. In White version, wild Elekid can be found in the White Forest. In White 2, wild Elekid can be found in the Virbank Complex.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In X & Y versions, Elekid is only obtainable via breeding Electabuzz and it's evolved form, Electivire.
In Gen 3 remakes Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, wild Elekid can be found on a Mirage Mountain postgame.
In Sun & Moon versions, wild Elekid can be found on Route 12 and Blush Mountain.
Tumblr media
In Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon versions, in addition to Route 12 and Blush Mountain, wild Elekid can be found on Mount Hokulani.
Tumblr media
Elekid is unobtainable in Let's Go! Pikachu & Let's Go! Eevee.
Elekid was originally a #dexit victim in Sword & Shield, not being included upon release. Upon the release of the Crown Tundra Expansion, Elekid and it's evolutions were reintroduced. Elekid is only catchable in certain areas of the Crown Tundra.
~COOL ELEKID FANART~
Our electric baby here actually has some pretty epic fanart!
Tumblr media
The Elekid family of Electric beasties!
Tumblr media
HE GON PUNCH U
Tumblr media
Finally found some art of the supposed "light blue" electricity it can generate...
Tumblr media
BLEH
Tumblr media
I'm a real fan of these cartoony takes on Pokémon that I've been finding.
~CONCLUSION~
In my first playthrough of White 2, I did catch myself an Elekid at the Virbank Complex pretty early in the game. Before evolving it into Electabuzz at level 30, it was a pretty solid beginning-of-the-game Pokémon!
AND IT'S GOT ATTITUDE
What are your thoughts on Elekid? Have you ever used one? Let me know!
Until next time! Join me next week for a classic villain from the anime and games that spews farts into the air!

Dream SMP Pokemon AU Part One
Aka I’m bored and started thinking too hard about this. Hit the image limit so I’ll post part two later when I get the motivation.
General Lore
Humans and Pokemon share lives because of a curse from the gods
Humans used to abuse Pokémon’s power and did the old “get cursed for their arrogance thing” that always happens to humans in myths
Now when humans catch Pokemon, it’s understood by both parties that their sharing lives in exchange for getting to bond and battle together
If a human runs out of their three lives, the Pokemon they are bonded with dies
It’s considered a major dick move to forcibly separate a pokemon and trainer
Humans can only share lives with pokemon when they are at least 10 years old
Like getting a pokemon in the anime basically
This is basically just an excuse for why everyone has one Pokemon and I didn’t want to just say I was lazy
Dream
Tumblr media
Him and Ditto have the same freaking face
Nicknamed Spirit
Disguises itself as a Gyarados, Rapidash, or Dragonite depending on what’s needed
Nobody knows it’s a Ditto
People just assume Dream is confident enough in his abilities that he’s willing to give only one life to each of his pokemon
Nope, he just has a Ditto that’s really good at transforming and battling
Wears a mask that looks like Dreams when it transforms so it can hide the Ditto face
Dream does his spiel about not caring about anything on the server and the poor thing gets sulky
Dream has to apologize to it and gives it a lot of hugs
George
Tumblr media
Slaking
Nicknamed Beckerson
Also has a tendency to take naps during important events
Could be one of the strongest pokemon there if the two bothered to train
Was a huge asset in the Dream Team vs L’Manberg War
Seriously this things attack stat is freaking insane
Already fully evolved when the war started
Sapnap
Tumblr media
Pyroar
Nicknamed Mars
I just looked at fire types and Mars fit the best
Plus Lions automatically equal awesome
Sapnap threatens to have Mars eat the smaller pokemon all the time
Will intimidate others by just gulping down magicarp in front of them
In like one bite each
Loves getting to set things on fire
Already fully evolved when the war started
Sapnap uses the “talking to a cat” voice with it
Still tries to sit in Sapnap’s lap after evolving and crushes him everytime
Tommy
Tumblr media
A primeape nicknamed Henry
To quotes it’s sun pokedex entry “It has been known to become so angry it dies as a result”
That’s about all I needed to pair him up with Tommy
Shares Tommy’s temper and loyalty
Considered more loyal to his trainer than the average pokemon
Him and Tommy met in the woods when Tommy was about nine and Henry was a mankey
They just both looked at each other and got in a fistfight
Then Tommy took him home after he accidentally got hurt
Evolved when Tommy was exiled from New L’manberg
Dream was keeping him captive in a pokeball and only let him out when they visited Tommy
When it was let out it always tried to beat the crap out of Dream
Was told to stop doing that by Tommy because Dreams a friend
Which Henry thought was bullcrap but anything for Tommy
He’s doing better at Techno’s now
Trains with Carl a lot
But he misses Spins :(
Tubbo
Tumblr media
A Vesiqueen nicknamed Spins
Picked because bees
Best friend to Henry
Evolved at the festival in a last ditch effort to try and protect Tubbo because combee have really bad stats
Didn’t work because fire beats bug but she tried very hard
It didn’t work but the thought counts
Worried about her trainer due to all the previous leaders becoming corrupted by the power
Has vowed to stick by his side no matter what
Loves to make honey and brings it to Niki for her bakery
Currently sad because she thinks Henry is dead :(
Honestly wishes literally anyone else would be president for her trainers mental health
Wilbur/Ghostbur
Tumblr media
Toxitricity that was not nicknamed
Picked because it’s the only pokemon with an association with music that actually looks like it can fight
I tried to find something with the colors but nope
There are probably better options out there but idk what they are
Met Wilbur as a Toxel when it’s parents abandoned it
Heard Wilbur playing his guitar and listened from the bushes
The it just followed him home and they got along
It evolved when Wilbur was exiled
Was one of the first to realize that something was wrong with him
Was one of the few who could snap Wilbur out of his delusions
Eventually even that didn’t work
It probably knew in the end that Wilbur was doomed
But It couldn’t just abandon its trainer
Not Wilbur no way
It was glad it got to see Gramps one last time
Now it exsists like those ghost pokemon in Lavender Town
Not a ghost type pokemon but literally a ghost
Called Ghostricity
Remembers about as much as Ghostbur
Techno
Tumblr media
An Emboar nicknamed Carl
Picked because it is, and I am quoting Bulbapedia, the “Mega Fire Pig Pokemon”
In other words, it’s a big boy!
How it met Techno will be explained in Philza’s entry so we’re gonna skip that
Was already fully evolved by the time Techno came to the Dream SMP
Just as bloodthirsty as his trainer and extremely good at battling
Loves to go to the Nether and soak in lava pools like a hot tub
Finds it very relaxing
Had an extra cost in bonding with Techno in that he also hears the voices
Finds them very annoying
Got jumped and taken hostage by the Butger Gang due to having water dumped on it
It was a lot of water
Which has managed to mega piss off Techno
Is very embarrassed at having to be rescued by Dream and Spirit
The closest to knowing what Spirit actually is
So looking forward to toppling the government
Currently training by sneaking out to waterfalls and standing under them
Very protective of Gramps
If you wanna do a speed run of getting fireblasted hurt Gramps in front of Carl
Philza
Tumblr media
A Drampa nicknamed Gramps
Literally all of its pokedex entries are about how it takes care of kids and is extremely threatening when pissed off
Gramps met Philza when It was raising a Tepig in the woods
Techno was little and had gotten lost in the woods and ran into Tepig
They got along and Tepig took him to see his “dad”
Drampa helped Techno get home and Philza let them stay at his house out of gratitude
Philza and Drampa got along and the rest is history
Considered a dad by Carl, Ghostricity, and Henry
A very nice dragon who has accidentally adopted like half the servers pokemon
Extremely long lived
Feels extreme guilt about Ghostricity’s whole situation
Hard to make mad but when it is mad
LOOK OUT
Totally doesn’t have a favorite pokemon in Carl
Who would dare spread such obviously and totally false slander
Currently under house arrest along with Phil
Wants to see his kids
Fundy
Tumblr media
A Delphox nicknamed Sally after his mom
Was gifted to Fundy when he was little by his mom
Evolved from Fennekin to Braxien after the Final Control Room incident
Evolved from Braixen to Delphox during the final fight in the Manberg Vs Pogtopia War
Uses her magic to help Fundy build things
Has mixed feelings about Ghostbur and Ghostricity
Just wants to Fundy to be happy and appreciated
Currently sticking with her trainer and making sure he doesn’t get himself killed in trying to fight some of the most powerful people on the server
Is slightly freaked out by The Buther Gang thing
Quackity
Tumblr media
An Empolean named Party
Picked because Club Penguin raid lol
Also blue and couldn’t find any cool duck pokemon
Quackity crashed on an island filled with the Piplup line
Had to stay for a couple of days to fix his boat
He left and found a piplup had snuck into his boat and decided to keep it
Has already evolved to Prinplup by the time Quackity was whitelisted
Evolved to Empolean during the duel with Technoblade in the control room
Loves screwing with people by freezing their stuff
Still has a surprisingly strong moral compass
Extremely loyal to its trainer and hated Schlatt with every bone in its body
Totally froze Schlatt’s gravestone at the funer
Hates going to the nether

Twilight Wings - Leon
Hey so I’ve been thinking over Sky all day long and I am not okay
Leon is not theatrical or full of himself as (at least I had) imagined him. He doesn’t even seem that unintelligent, as funny as I found all the ‘lol he’s a dumbass he gets lost all the time’ jokes, rather he seems quietly intelligent in an almost reserved way.
Opal: I can’t tell whether [Leon] wants to win... or lose. (The suggestion here seems to be that Opal means Leon is fierce on the battlefield, refusing to back down, but that off of it... He’s aloof, constantly “lost,” and that makes her wonder whether he really wants to lose. It’s a paradox. He wants to lose, but he doesn’t want to outright throw a match.)
John: He’s not really smiling, is he? (Although John is saying this in regard to the TV program, I feel like it’s an interesting choice of words considering the scene on the mountain... The fake, forced smile and upbeat tone, the gritted teeth, the slight wince he gives John and the cab driver when they find him...)
Which they find him standing on the plateau... of a mountain... despite saying he didn’t want to tire out his Charizard and he got lost “on the road.”
The resigned happiness he uses when he’s addressing John to try to inspire him to become a trainer. Again, he’s putting it on well enough to inspire John, and it clearly meant the world to him and inspired him, but it’s still just... doesn’t seem enthusiastic.
How he fails entirely to react to Raihan’s taunt and instead just poses. It’s not theatrical or bombastic. He just walks over and poses because... that’s what the crowd wants.
Yet, it doesn’t seem Leon wants to be displaced by just anybody and as Opal suggested, he doesn’t want to just throw a match. Leon legitimately wants to lose. He wants someone to show up and beat him and show him this isn’t all he’s meant to be, that there’s more to life than this. Remember, this man was shoved into this position at 10 years old... Also, the “I got lost” excuse. I feel like he maybe started off legitimately getting lost as a kid, but as he grew older, he leaned into this excuse to get more time to himself and avoid the constant public pressure.
Now, ladies and gents, I present to you... some scenes from the Sword and Shield games that hit a little harder with all that in mind.
1: Slumbering Weald, near the opening. Leon, who apparently can’t find his way down the straight line from Wedgehurst to Postwick, was capable of finding Hop and Victor/Gloria when they were unconscious in the Slumbering Weald which is full of thick fog. Hop even comments on it: “But you’re pants with directions!” To which Leon retorts something along the lines of, “Oh, that’s rich coming from my brother who had me worried sick!” (That’s probably not exactly it, I can’t remember and am too lazy to pull up the Bulbapedia Quotes page, but I know it’s something like that.)
2: Motostoke after Bede beats Hop. Leon remarks that Hop saw him, apologized profusely, and then ran. Ran from him like he was scared to face him. Upon learning Hop was beaten by Bede, Leon awkwardly gives some spiel about “Oh, yeah... losing makes you feel bad and... uh... well, I gotta go. Seeya!” I always thought that was really funny, but now it hits a little different. Learning that Hop didn’t want to see him because he had lost probably disillusioned Leon some and threw him off his game, and more than that, he might have had a hard time relating to the sensation of losing because he hasn’t. He wishes someone could beat him. This conversation topic verges on something rather uncomfortable with him, so he gives his practiced spiel, then dips so he doesn’t have to talk more about it.
I mean I’m not saying he’s cripplingly depressed or anything like that, don’t stretch my words, but I do think he’s over this position as champion, wishes someone strong would come along and show him this isn’t all he’s ever meant to be, and is too uncomfortable/fearful of Hop’s chasing his tail to actually talk to Hop about it.
