I watched this while babysitting and I had a great time. It's a kids movie, but hey, I have Scooby-Doo nostalgia and a soft spot for campy Batman, this does both very well.

Vic shows up, is annoying on purpose, and gets his shit rocked and his identity stolen. Extremely Vic behaviour.

Justice League Unlimited - Fearful Symmetry

I know this is a beloved portrayal. Jeffery Combs' performance is well regarded for a reason. It's the biggest adaptation Vic's ever had. It acknowledges his comic connections to other characters. I get it. I just do not enjoy him as the baseless conspiracy theorist and it drives me up the wall that it's the best he's got.

Like I'm sorry but he would not fucking say any of this. He's annoying and bad at superheroics for many other reasons but he is extremely aware of the real roots of corruption, he's not going to be repeating antisemitic conspiracy shit. Even when he genuinely sucks he sucks in very specific ways.

I do actually like Vic getting deeply upset by the thought that the bad future is predestined and trying to throw himself under the bus for it. That feels fitting to me even if the details aren't.

There's a version of this story that lives in my brain where Vic is more of his stubborn, no-nuance early reporter self, and he breaks into the secret government facility to try and leak everything to the world only to get his ass kicked instantly by Captain Atom.

JLU - Grudge Match

This is the world's dumbest nitpick but Vic fucks. It's the one part of being in a relationship he doesn't suck at. I have no real problems with this sequence, it's funny and does the conspiracy bit better than his main appearances, but I discovered while rewatching that this is a thing I have opinions about and where else am I going to put these extremely stupid thoughts.

It's just rude that Vic is in the suitup montage but has his mask on the whole time. Let him transform.

I liked his JLU episodes a hell of a lot less this time through than when I first watched them. It's generally a good show, but knowing that this version of Vic is the most accessible one is incredibly frustrating, and the overall strength means that I'm annoyed about missed potential. BatB was never going to be the serious showcase of his nuance or whatever, but JLU could have been an incredible adaptation, and it just isn't for him. Sorry JLU fans.

Given a lot of people are playing around the whole "Jews should shut up" card, I need to tell you a little story about why you should be on the watch for antisemitic discourse, whether you are Jew or not, and why also some of you need to start looking at things in their entirety, not just through one specific angle.

(I want to go back to making my dumb little Ségurant posts but this story kept hanging over my head so I just need to get it out of my chest, maybe as a way for people to open their eyes about this)

If you were here some times ago you will recall I made a post about the recent boom of antisemitic behavior, posts and speeches on Tumblr after the attack of the Hamas on Israel (an attack some people claim never existed and was completely made up, just like 9/11, but that's another trash pile to get rid of later). My post wasn't even about the Israel-Hamas situation, but about simply "Wow, there's a LOT of antisemitism on this website, and many people use the Israel-Palestine situation as an excuse to say the dumbest shit". Which is no surprise because Tumblr always had a massive trend towards the worst side of what, using the French political spectrum, I'd refer to as "the left" - and one of the worst of the extreme-left is of course antisemitism (which is precisely what proves that extreme-left and extreme-right are basically the same thing, but that's yet again another subject)

So I made this post pointing out "Wow, there's a lot of antisemitism here". And it got quite popular - of course because of all the current events, etc, etc... And somebody came to me directly to react to my post. And this person said, basically, "You know, it is not because you had some negative experiences about yourself that you should blow things out of proportions. It is not because you dislike what you see people write about your kind that it means there's antisemitism on this website. Stop making a mountain out of a mouse."

Which is when I realized I got the person in blatant antisemitic behavior. Because there's one easy trick to get antisemitic people, and that you don't even need to "activate" consciously - let them believe you're Jewish, or let them assume you are Jewish, and see what they say. Because surprise surprise... I'm not Jewish. I just happened to see a lot of antisemitic stuff, and say I was really shocked by this. And this random person came in and assumed I was Jew... Aka they played the archetype of "The Whiney Jew". Because I complained about antisemitism, they assumed I must be Jew because in their mind only Jewish people will complain about antisemitism, because all-non Jewish MUST certainly see the "truth" of how Jewish folks are just self-victimizing. (And down this line, the person did not say this, but I know some who did, we get down the path of stuff such as "Oh yeah, the holocaust did not exist, everybody knows the Jews made it all up").

Anyway this person thought I was Jewish, and so tried to gaslight me. By assuming I had some personal antisemitic attacks, and by making me believe I was projecting my personal experience onto a whole website, and that I was just victimizing myself. Having been gaslit for a very long time on other subjects, I immediately recognized the move - and it was even easier to see what they were doing since I never had any personal antisemitic experience in my life since I am NOT JEWISH.

I easily cut off their deal by pointing out I was not Jewish. And what the person did (I later learned they were very into Orthodox Christianity, even making their whole blog about it) was what we in French call "noyer le poisson" - drown the fish. Take a side-subject or a detail in my speech, and make the discussion all about it to try to smother the thing that made them look bad. In this case they accused me of lying about not being into devil-worship (because if you notice I have a Black Butler icon, and a Goya painting on my blog). For them it was proof that I was either a "witch" or into "devil-worship" and when I said no they insisted I was lying... But if I had defended myself about this, it would have completely derailed the conversation and THAT is what they wanted. Because they wanted me to stop talking about how, when they believed I was Jew, they tried to gaslight me into believing the antisemitic boom of Tumblr was all in my head.

I did not gave them this pleasure. But this little story of me and this person actually completely encapsulates so many other interactions I had or posts I saw or discussions I "heard" on this website. People who just come in to either try to pretend antisemitism does not exist, either start changing the topic of a talk every time antisemitism is brought up.

Everybody knows that the antisemitic depiction of the Jew is the "greedy, hooked-nose, manipulator who secretly controls the media and politics", right? But everybody seems to forget that there are many, many vicious and vile caricatures of Jewish people made by the hydra of antisemitism, an hydra that keeps changing head depending on the era, the country or the political leaning. And so there are many, even contradictory, antisemitic depictions of the Jews. The "whiney, complaining, victimizing" Jew is another antisemitic cliche that people claiming things such as "The Holocaust did not happen" or "The attack of Hamas did not happen" are gleefully using.

I already was disgusted by what I had seen on Tumblr before (I even considered quitting the website) - but having this person try to target me simply woke up by natural bitterness and misanthropy and desire to burn down all those nasty perverse brutes. So this is why I will be very active and vocal about every time I see antisemitic behavior.

So again, if you have antisemitic beliefs, please get the fuck off my blog. If you believe Jewish people have no right being in your country - whatever country it is - go fuck yourself and leave. If you support the Hamas while turning a blind eye to their openly antisemitic and genocidal agenda, go fuck yourself. If you support the Hamas while KNOWING their openly antisemitic and genocidal agenda, I won't say what I think should happen to you. If you support those dangerous organizations that want to "Give back France to French people" - and thus hunt down anyone that is not a White Catholic, go fuck yourself. If you are one of those neo-Nazis who think the Holocaust should continue, go fuck yourself. If you are one of those negationists who claim the Holocaust never happened, go fuck yourself. If you are one of those extreme-leftists who believe the Jews are like the Asians an "elite" or one of the "privileged" minorities, so priviliged they do not deserve to be ranked among other victims of oppression, go fuck yourself.

And you see how long and varied this "go fuck yourself" list is? That's the point I want to make. Antisemitism isn't about "Good people against antisemitism" versus "Antisemitic people". It is about "We have to face tons of various forms and types of antisemitism coming from all sides at once". Antisemitism lies in the extremes, but in the extremes of what? Of everything. Of Christianity, of Islam, of the left, of the right, of many nationalisms... A few years ago, "Everybody wants to kill the Jews" was a comedy-line, a joke referencing the historical persecution of the Jewish people - but now? Now that's literaly the news. It is happening on social media, in Europe, in America, in the Arabian world. And even though I'm not Jew I can't even escape it myself - it is everywhere on the news, be it TV or newspaper ; it is everywhere on the Internet (I do not even check the tags that could bring out the most antisemitic part of this website because I am not ready to quit Tumblr yet) ; it is even IN THE GRAFFITIES INSIDE THE TOILETS OF MY UNIVERSITY! Is it so far fetched that Palestinians will be hauled into concentration camps?  Well, they have and continue to be.  Since December 2023, there exists a place to which Palestinian males are taken and detained, without charges or access to legal counsel—a camp called, “Sde Teiman.” While there, Palestinian men are humiliated, mistreated, and tortured. Many have died. The IDF soldiers running the place must have been given a crash course about the notorious French writer, Marquis De Sade. You say Israel has the right to defend itself? Then answer this question: How is Israel defending itself by ramming metal sticks up Palestinian men’s ass holes, starving them, torturing them with electricity and beatings, and other abuses. You tell me! Oh, then on Tik Tok, there are IDF soldiers wearing the lingerie of dead or displaced Palestinian women and dancing around, laughing. Yeah, that will teach evil people to behave! Yes, it’s true: you always become what you hate. It never fails.

If there is a God, why in the burning pits of hell does God need the Israeli Defence Force to do his deeds?! Theocracy is the dumbest form of government! No matter it be Islam, Christian, or Jewish! And, if God does exist, why in the fuck does Israel need a military?! Or an Iron Dome? How come God never gives a State of the Union speech? The Communists are correct—Religion is poison!

I note with some dismay that the whole affair over Azhar Ali is being broadly categorised as an ‘antisemitic row’ or just generally something based on antisemitism, when what he did pretty obviously and unequivocally was criticise Israel. You know? The state of Israel? The state? We’re still tussling on the whole “Is criticising Israel the same as criticising all Jews?” issue and that’s kind of depressing.

Because there’s people out there who will use Israel as an ever-so-clever and ever-so-subtle way of sneaking in some antisemitic nonsense because there are people out there who seem to spend every hour of every day feverishly working out some new, secret way of rolling out the same tired, aggravatingly stupid cannards against Jews. That’s just life, apparently, even in the future. That’s also depressing.

(Seriously, it never fails to knock the wind out of my sails whenever I get some peek into the endless arms race between those who hate the Jews (and really need a better hobby) and those who have to keep track of those who hate the Jews and have to keep track of their ever-expanding list of weirdo secret signals and code words. “Ah! He’s turned around three times and tapped his foot and glanced at the moon! We all know what that means! It means he thinks Hitler was alright!” No! No we didn’t know that! And I’m annoyed now that I do!

Also, as a further aside, that that whole fourteen words and double-H thing remains popular is mind-numbing. It is the dumbest shit. The bar is so low.)

But Israel is also, you know, a state. It takes up physical space. It is a thing. It does stuff. That stuff sometimes impacts places that are not Israel. And if you police people’s opinions on this in a way that’s set up to instantly brand any negative stances as just inherently anti-jew, well, that’s not helpful, is it? Were the protests they were having against judicial reform in Israel also antisemitic because those people were criticising Israeli policy? That seems to be the logic you’re using.

That said, Azhar’s actual statement – that Israel let October Seventh go ahead to serve as an excuse to roll into Gaza – is stupid. Antisemitic? Eh, you can argue the toss on that and I’m sure you’ll find people who’ll go to their graves insisting it is, but I’m less sure. The insinuation that the present administration of Israel, being as it is mostly rightwing nutbags, would want an excuse to go into Gaza? Not crazy. That they’d let an attack like that happen so they could have an excuse? No, sorry. Not buying that.

It sits alongside “Nine-eleven was an inside job”, it’s that kind of thinking. Both attacks were “Allowed to happen” in the sense that in both cases there was fairly obvious information relayed that something was about to go down and then nothing was done about it. So the problem here is complacency more than actual malice. It wasn’t “Muwhahaha I’m going to let people die so I can do a thing!” it was “Yeah yeah sure warnings whatever look I got problems of my own right now oh shit oh fuck what is happening” followed by, you know,  a lot of airstrikes.

But that’s me.

And this is all leaving aside of course Labour continuing to cover itself in glory by, for once, standing by someone only to then give up. Why they’d stand by this and not the people, oh, calling for a ceasefire or saying something like “From the river to the sea” or, oh, going on a picket line I’ve no idea given that this was a non-starter from the, er, start.

Israel Palestine venting

Israel-Palestine discourse is a fucking mess partly because all communication seems to be laced with signaling about what side you're on or risking being taken as supporting one side or another, and discussing the nuances is incredibly difficult without coming across as supporting a given side.

But also paradoxically I deeply wish I knew exactly, precisely, and in detail what people are implying when they talk about it, because a lot of anti-Zionist takes absolutely freak me out, and also because I want to know how many friends and family and community members I can actually trust to not support Israel.

A lot of the anti-Zionist side freaks me out because there IS some antisemitism in there no matter how progressive the movement tries to be, and there seems to be a pretty deep undercurrent of people either wanting Israel to be ethnically cleansed or (sometimes, often ambiguously) supporting Hamas and the Oct. 7th attack (which is both morally despicable and the absolute fucking dumbest possible action to defend as a strategic move, like holy shitting fuck what would ANYONE expect the benefits and consequences of an escalation like that to be!)

And posts like this one are the kind where I really, really want to clarify what I'm trying to signal and feel like I have to say, which is frustrating again because I feel like I'd end up misinterpreted and get yelled at by people I mostly agree with. Do I have to put up a bunch of signs that explain that I think Israel is committing genocide, that it's been committing crimes against humanity for decades and was built on awful colonialism?

I was picking apart this document and went from wanting to question and pick apart half the points in good faith to going YIKES when they argued for a misleading and bad-faith definition of antisemitism; and then conjoined statements about not advocating for specifically Jewish genocide and Israel not being specifically Jewish (I can hope they're not implying they're advocating for genocide or ethnic cleansing of Israelis, but they worded it in a really concerning way) to going MEGAYIKES when they say that Judaism is a religion and not an ethnicity, which is (to boil down a complicated explanation) false and extremely antisemitic!

Also, man, the stuff people keep bringing up, about the unequal power dynamic between Israel and Palestine, and using that as a shutdown of the bad-faith silencing tactic of saying it's too complicated for you to have an opinion on, which is a valid argument and partially true with regards to that one specific take, but also is in and of itself a bad-faith shutdown of any discussion of nuance and moral complexity when those things are still incredibly important and consequential, like seriously, those little asterisks and subheadings all have fucking body counts

And if I say all that, will people think I support violence against Israeli civilians, or any form of genocide or ethnic cleansing against them? Will they think I hate Jews?

I think the thing that has emotionally exhausted me since this particular conflict started is that so, so many people supporting both sides of this conflict (obligatory I don't think both sides are equal in power or moral standing) seem to think there's a wrong and a right group of people to massacre, torture, starve, expel, etc. and anyone who thinks that there's no such thing as a right group of people to do those things to is either a wishy-washy both sides moderate or a secret troll who ACTUALLY supports genociding the WRONG side.

(this isn't getting into the horrible sense of mass alienation from both the left who seem to ambiguously maybe support a hypothetical genocide of an ethnic group I'm a part of, and, much more tangibly and heartbreakingly, all of the friends and family and old classmates and people I went to synagogue with, who mostly do seem to be supporting a very real and ongoing and massive and horrifying genocide. And the paradoxical sense of betrayal from the Zionist side, even though I'M the one that changed my values, because the moral weight SHOULD BE ON THEM, on the people I grew up knowing and talking to every day and making friends with and playing games with and learning lessons from and being supported by, to be good people and not be vile, racist scum supporting horrible torment and murder and starvation! Fucking starvation! That should be the line that fills every single one of them with disgust to cross, in the wake of the goddamn Holocaust!)

Look, an example of exactly the kind of delusional viewpoint I was thinking of.

This idea that Trump and the Republicans just indulge in the occasional intemperate rhetoric while Biden empowers Holocaust deniers and enacts a radical anti-white legal agenda is openly delusional. It does not comport with reality.

During Trump's disastrous handling of the George Floyd riots, it made the national news that vans would patrol Portland streets, grabbing up people who looked like maybe they could be protestors. What didn't become a national story was that the US Marshalls protecting the courthouse were caught on film shooting a peaceful protestor in the head with a rubber bullet.

An internal investigation petered out, and he also can't sue, due to a recent supreme court decision.

Hey, which justices do you suppose wrote the case that prevents this brain damaged person from my city from receiving any compensation for a crime that was caught on video?

Anyway, after US Marshalls caved in the skull of one of my fellow Portlanders for no reason, Trump's only comment was to say what a great job federal forces did in Portland.

I am not going to pretend to live in this illusory reality where moderate color-blind, trans-friendly Republicans struggle in vain to stop an anti-white legal regime imposed by the Democratic party because that is not real.

One of the things that's weird about being a white guy in the US right now is that expressions of disgust about you are common and said directly to your face.

I've had coworkers say, "Ugh, white men are disgusting" while I was within earshot. Coworkers who are married to white men!

You're supposed to have a very strange double consciousness about this stuff, as best I can tell; all that stuff about white men doesn't mean any man who is white, it means *white men* which is a totally different thing, but watch out, only a man who is white can become a *white man*, but obviously not you, except you might, but don't worry about it, but also do.

You really are culturally expected to accept that people will talk about how disgusting your physical traits are right to your face, and that this is tolerable because you obviously have money and power, and also you know that you aren't actually that thing, except when you are.

I suspect that this kind of thing will drive you slightly insane even when you do have money and power.
