“Care to watch the show? You can’t stop it, so you might as well enjoy it.” B grinned, sparks in their eyes and the air.

“Oh be quiet dear, this will all be over soon.”

“You say that we’re doing something different, that we’re making the right changes to protect people, but all I see are more corpses.”

“Are you sure this is the right thing to do?”

“Oh god, oh fuck…” A crumpled to their knees, helplessly watching B’s blood pool on the floor. “What did I do?”

“I… I think we’re the monsters here.”

“Did you actually think you could save them?” B laughed in disbelief.

“People die all the time, why would you be any different?”

A looked at the sky, avoiding B’s gaze. “The night is in everyone. Hope dies like stars, happiness crashes like meteors. The night remains.”

“If you do this, heaven will not know your name.” “They will know it, and they will fear it.”

“You asked for a savior, not a saint.”

Their face was carved from the malice of millions.

“They chose me. I must carry out my duty or thousands more will die.”

“That’s enough A! We’ve tried everything, hell, nearly lost everything too. One of us will die if we keep going...” “And we let them win?” “It’s the only way we get a happy ending.”

“I’ve been waiting to do this for a long time.”

“Why are you doing this? What did I ever do to deserve this?” “Don’t be naïve. You know exactly what you’ve done.”

“You should’ve seen the look on their faces. It was delicious.”

A collapsed, thoughts swirling in a mess of confusion and betrayal. Their arm stung. Their bones ached. Their heart hurt. “What happened to you?” “Nothing happened. You became weak.”

“I don’t want to do this. But it’s the only way out.”

Thomas Blake has been having a day, well no, he’s been having a life actually, but he’s been good at not letting the self-loathing win these days and he’s not giving up on that progress today. 

Still.

It’s the anniversary of his pride’s murder and Lawton’s face is hard to look at. 

Venice is a nice place to get lost in though, and he is desperately in need of some alone time lest he starts thinking too hard and ends up stabbing Lawton.

He walks up a bridge and leans against the railing, staring down into the water below, where the moon’s reflection shines.

"You got a lot on your mind?" a voice sounds from somewhere behind him.

He swivels but is met with nothing more than the canal.

"Up here," the voice sounds again and as Blake looks up, he finds himself looking at a white-haired flying little girl.

He blinks for a moment but the girl is still there.

"Yes?" The girl asks innocently. He narrows his eyes at the too-wide green eyes.

Ok, if she wants to play it like that. 

Blake consciously relaxes himself before shrugging. "Just memories."

"Oh yeah," the girl nods sagely. "Those are wild. Only been having them for a year, but boy are they a trip."

The man doesn’t offer any reaction behind a sympathetic hum to the weird info drop. If he’s playing the game and he’s damn well sure going to win it. "What about you, what’s kept you awake?"

The girl pulls a face. "Couldn’t find a bed I liked."

"Too hard or too soft, goldilocks?" His lips are pulling into a smile despite himself.

"Too haunted," the girl answers, deadpan. "This city is crowded, my dude."

Blake raises an eyebrow. "Is that so?"

The girl nods. "There’s gotta be something in the water, I’m telling you."

He looks down into the dark waters, as he remembers every warning he’s been given about taking a dip in the canals, and he’s tempted to agree.

"You got money?" The girl asks non-sequitur.

"Some," he says, wanting to see where this is going.

"I know a gelato place not too far that should still be open," the girl says. "I’ll show you if you get me a nocciola cone."

Blake looks up into the kid’s glowing eyes and smiles.

"Deal."

In Nothing But Shadows, Ragnor tells James that he’s been waiting for James to come to him for help on his warlock powers, and James says he’s only ever wanted to be a Shadowhunter. I think this should have been explored much more in TLH, where James is struggling to differentiate himself from his warlock side but it’s hard because of his abilities and his warlock mark.

On the other hand, we have Lucie who always says she doesn’t appreciate being overlooked (even though she ends up being overlooked through the whole narrative even though her power is more plot-relevant than James’s). Objectively, Lucie has the more powerful ability between her and James, and she does not have a warlock mark and is unafraid to use her power. She has a willingness to learn about her warlock side. Therefore, I think she definitely should have started warlock training so we could see the way that James and Lucie have opposite views on their powers and whether they are a blessing or curse, something to hide away and tame or something to utilize. It would also be interesting to see because, although this is not discussed in TLH, it is mentioned in the short stories that even at a young age people in Shadowhunter society think that Lucie is never going to be married because of her warlock blood and that any little misstep could forever ruin her reputation. So her warlock training just adds even more risk but I think that seems like something Lucie would do regardless. It could have added much more dimension to Lucie’s character and furthered an antihero arc (that I so desperately wish would have happened).

One thing I love about Jeff Parker's Hulk run is seeing Thaddeus Ross broken and vulnerable. Like he isn't a Boogeyman like he comes off as sometimes.

Imagine being one of the top dogs of the US military, having literal legions under your command.....but you can't even save the only person you have left.

Ross was manipulated into becoming Red Hulk and you can tell he doesn't want to do it. Yeah he talks about coveting power in World War Hulks but he sold his soul to the devil to save his daughter's life.

He doesn't regret saving Betty....but he regrets allowing himself to trust devils. They turned his baby into a monster and it's because of him.

Yknow i think that if they made House slightly more empathetic to the average joe his character couldve done wonders for the rights of people with chronic pain re: getting the medication they need without being labeled as drug seeking or addicts

I always like to think that Morris is actually a rather kind person with a soul, capable of showing empathy for others. And before he started working for the mega corporation, he was... just an ordinary humble guy, with ambition, good friends, classmates, and most importantly, loving parents who invested love in their child.

but it was his work at Joja Co. that made him what he is today. For the sake of such a prestigious job, according to others and a heap of publicity from the corporation itself, Morris had neglected everything he had and everything that made him what could be called human.

and I think he realizes what he's done to himself. but it's too late.

but despite all that, he still has a little, little piece of that same kind and empathic persona hidden behind the mask of a brash, arrogant manager

man, one of my favorite things about nightheart as a character is that, as an apprentice, he went to a gathering where the adults were discussing the leader thing and he just pipes up from the kids table and says "hey, how about we try democracy" and everyone gets mad at him
