Recently on twitter, an artist is being harassed/attacked by some racists, loli supporters and what-nots for simply making a character, Noko-tan from my deer friend Noko-tan, a transfem blasian.. And these are the exact same people who say shit like this

Like, people are allow to draw or make an AU or redesign a canon character however they like... like, take what I did to The President from The Bacon Hair, I made him into a gay, white elderly transman..

Bc I was one of those people when I was younger. I got into a fandom bc of this one character, and they mostly interacted with this other character who was their sibling. Not by blood, but raised fully as siblings and called each other that way. I, being the stupid 13 y/o I was, shipped them bc "they're so cute together!"

Down the line, I met people who disagreed, obviously, they're siblings, and the more I learned about the media and characters themselves, I started realizing that shipping them that way was wrong, and I fell off it after a year or so

Now I don't know the statistics of pro-shippers. I don't know if many start out as one then stop, or the other way around, and I'm not going to pretend to know. But what I do know is that if someone had never told me, "hey, this ship is problematic" and would've continued seeking out romantic content of them and most likely would've continued shipping them today

And when someone is never told that, when they see these pairings and are told "it's okay bc it's fiction", they continue. They not only continue, but seek out more problematic content, and tell others that it's perfectly fine. Bc they think it's fine, these sorts of behaviors get normalized in their everyday life. There could be a ship where one of the love interests is being abusive to the other, physically putting them down and demeaning them (and the other could be doing the same), and someone young who ships them thinks it's alright, that toxic behavior is normalized for them, they tell others it's fine, and the cycle continues

I know some of you are gonna think I'm reaching, but fiction does affect reality, whether you like it or not, and it is vital that we use critical thinking skills in these sorts of content. Pro-shipping can be very harmful in the long run

If you're an "anti" and you're against harassment, against people telling other to kill themselves and against people doxxing others for their ship- and you go like "I don't like this ship and it's disgusting for me but I will just block the tag/the user"- I'm sorry to tell you this, but you're a closeted proshipper. And no, a "proshipper" is not a person who likes "problematic ships". Pro doesn't come from "problematic", it comes from "pro" as in supporting something.

Proshipping ≠ Problematic shipping

Proshipping = Pro + shipping = Be in favor of shipping

So if you don't harass people for a ship (nor accept antis doing it), if you don't tell other "kys" for a ship (nor accept antis doing it) and if you don't doxx people for a ship (nor accept antis doing it) then you're not an anti. You are a proshipper.
