Ok I need some help understanding… when is paraphilia bad or is it all bad? I see a lot of discourse about it in fandom and other communities and these words are just flying over my head so I’ve chosen to be neutral about it.

I’m sorry if the tags aren’t perfect, I used mixed pro and anti to get a side of both opinions so if y’all start arguing or being ugly tho I’m blocking.

Well, looks like objectum paraphile discourse is back I guess…

I’m here with what might be a controversial take.

I don’t think the terms “paraphile” and “paraphilia” are at all useful in of themselves.

First off, how is “paraphilia” defined? Because the answer I’ve always heard is that it is any atypical sexual interest.

But who defines what is considered “atypical”? Is it simply “something the majority of people aren’t into”? By that logic, something 49% of people are interested in sexually is a paraphilia because that’s technically a minority of people. This basically renders the term paraphilia useless. Or does the percentage have to be smaller? 30%? 20%? 10%? But then we run into another problem. Say new research surveying the adult population found that a large proportion of adults did experience some level of attraction to children. That pedophilia is actually much less atypical than we are led to believe. Would it no longer be a paraphilia? Most people would say no. Additionally, isn’t what is “atypical” dependent on the norms of a specific place and time? There is literally no way to pin down what is and isn’t a paraphilia by the “atypical sexual interest” definition alone.

But how else should we define paraphilia? “Sexual interest that causes distress” is out because it apparently implies that paraphiles should be ashamed of their attraction. “Sexual interest that could cause harm to the self or others if acted on” is apparently out because it furthers the myth that paraphiles are dangerous. There does not appear to be a single clear definition of this term, and therefore no easy justification for forcing people to apply it to themselves.

I’m sick and tired of “x group is inherently all paraphiles”. Sick and tired of it to the point that I’m debating dropping the label. It doesn’t communicate anything of value about myself.
