I hate now that Barbie is forever connected to that bad depressing 2023 movie. I want my barbie movies! My love stories. Friendship, and magic and girl power. Beautiful outfits and beautiful dolls. Where Ken isn't an asshole. Where Barbie world is great place for guys and girls! Where there's no dumb hate for enjoying dolls. Now everytime I look up Barbie that dumb movie is connected to it that makes fun of Barbie lovers and people who loves dolls and fashion in general. I'm all for feminism and being a feminist. I'm a 27 year old woman in 2024. But Barbie was my childhood as a lonely little girl. I loved dolls. And I feel like this movie constantly makes fun of that.

Please, don’t forget about the women in Afghanistan.
This image is not at all a commentary on Islam and/or of the different head-coverings that a woman may choose to wear while respecting her faith. Wearing a burqa/burka does not equate to an inherent lack of rights/freedom. This is also not a criticism of the Barbie movie. This is a statement about the brutal treatment of the women and girls in Afghanistan (as well as in Iran).
I loved the Barbie movie and think it’s a very important and empowering film. However, it is a bit jarring when I’m scrolling through my phone, listening to the Barbie soundtrack, and I come across an article detailing the mounting horrors these women face in these countries. There is so much happening in the world, and it all needs news time, but the virtual media silence on this topic is frightening.
Even though my country isn’t perfect (especially so after June of last year), it’s easy to lose perspective on how privileged I am.
The many different flavors of western feminism aren’t for everyone and every culture; to think so would be privileged and tone deaf. There is no "one-size-fits-all" kind of empowerment. But, objectively, what is happening to women and girls in Afghanistan and Iran is abhorrent and cannot be forgotten.
If Barbie can be anything, then Barbie can be an advocate and an activist. Do what you can, Barbies.
“I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own.” ― Audre Lorde

My post about hating the Barbie movie and how it actually spat in the face of feminism and all that the franchise stands for is done and dusted, I'm afraid, but that being said there are still some points I left out of it that I would like to address, and I will do so here:
The movie portraying women as hopeless endless victims who have no hopes of succeeding or getting what they want out of life is bad enough, but there's a brief blink-and-you'll-miss it scene where Barbie is taking Gloria and Sasha back to Barbieland, and as they're on the spaceship, she says to them that women control everything and have all social and political power, which is fine...but THEN she goes "basically everything men do in your world, women do in ours" and that...that line just makes me so appalled and angry I could SPIT. Like you're really spelling out that you think women in the real world have no power or control in any aspect of society? I understand that it's supposed to be "commentary"(it's not good commentary tho) and that the real world IS a patriarchy, but we HAVE women in power in our world too! We HAVE female Supreme Court Justices! We HAVE women in high office! We HAVE female mayors and CEOs! We HAVE women in positions of power and leadership, period! And yet Barbie creates this illusion that women in our world such as Sasha and Gloria would have NO knowledge of or point of reference for women in power who do any important shit at all; it's completely fucking absurd. But then again, this movie was written and directed by a white feminist. A white feminist, who, like all white feminists, has a complete miserable victimhood/defeatist complex. So of course she projects it onto her female characters(even female characters of color, who are ofc SUPPOSED to be more sad and let-down than SHE is!), like the sad, pathetic fuck she is. And y'all wonder why I hate persecution flips so much. We need to shove that bullshit trope six feet under. If you want to tell a story about the patriarchy, then FUCK, WRITE ABOUT THE ACTUAL GODDAMN PATRIARCHY!!! Don't just do this nonsense "uwu what if men were the oppressed ones and women were the privileged--" no. Stop. Cut it the fuck out. This is getting ridiculous.
This part is probably incidental but fuck that, I'm still gonna knock it. Sasha and Gloria never actually get to experience the matriarchal utopia, and I just find that so depressing. Despite the bleak and frankly miserable lives that they lead, they never get to experience the escapist freedom of living in a society in which they are in charge, where womanhood isn't looked down upon and is in fact honored, where they have power and aren't in danger of being stalked, followed, or killed by men just for walking down the street. They leave their patriarchal world, hoping to see a world that is better, and instead enter a world that is just as bad and equally as patriarchal as the one they tried to escape from. It's truly depressing, especially for Gloria who specifically wanted to get away from her anxieties with real life and just have fun with her daughter for a bit. Instead she has to be confronted with ANOTHER patriarchy, watch the childhood doll she loved and played with have a panic attack and give up on life just like she did, and then give her infamous, cliche, and paint by numbers "being a woman is suffering" corny as hell speech. Before reinventing the matriarchy and getting her power back only by leaning in to patriarchal stereotypes about women's bodies and sexualities. And then leaving back for her regular patriarchy world without getting to experience any of it. It's almost like the movie was literally saying that women will never be able to free themselves from patriarchy and that a better world than this one does not exist. Patriarchy is insurmountable and all-prevailing, says this movie. It's truly tragic.
And honestly, with regards to that shitty ass clusterfuck of a speech, isn't it like, so totes ironic, that part of Gloria's speech is her complaining that women have to apologize for men's bad behavior...only for the "happy" ending of the movie to involve BARBIE HAVING TO APOLOGIZE FOR KEN'S BAD BEHAVIOR?!?!!??!?! Like no one fact-checked that shit and went "wait, something ain't right"? Are you fucking kidding me?!?!?!?!?! I hate that scene with every fiber of my being and realizing this makes me hate it even more now. Just, ugh.
Tldr: Fuck this movie, but then again, I've said that shit like...several times before. lol.

[ID: A series of Instagram graphics, mostly black text on a pale pink background.
Image 1: Barbie Is Taking the World by Storm, and Fast Fashion Is Capitalising on It
Garment workers deserve better
Image 2: With the recent release of the Barbie movie captivating audiences and breaking box office records (the film made $162 million in the US and Canada its first weekend, making Barbie the biggest debut ever for a film directed by a woman), it's no surprise that fast fashion brands are jumping on the bandwagon, launching their own Barbie- inspired collections.
That's bad news for people and planet
Image 3: What's happening?
Problematic fast fashion brands like Zara, Primark, Boohoo, ASOS, and GAP have all launched Barbie-inspired collections, capitalising on the Barbiecore trend for their own gains.
While the allure of a pink-infused, Clueless-like wardrobe may be enticing, we need to pause and question the true cost of these collections.
Image 4: Exploiting garment workers isn't empowering
Seeing fast fashion brands claim their collections "empower women" is just giving us the "ick". It's purplewashing.
Fact: the majority of garment workers are women, mostly women of colour, and the fast fashion brands promoting these collections don't pay living wages. Most have terrible track records for supply chain transparency and many labour rights violations.
Launching a pink collection won't fix that.
Image 5: Fuelling overconsumption
Fast fashion brands are already producing far more clothes than anyone in the world actually needs.
Barbie collections are simply more of the same overproduction and overconsumption that ultimately ends up in landfills-but disguised in pink.
Dressing up for a movie experience? Fun! Luring people to buy new clothes they are likely only to wear a few times? Not fun!
Image 6: Life in plastic is not fantastic
Most of these fast fashion collections are made of virgin plastic. According to Forbes, nearly 70m barrels of oil are used each year to make polyester fibre, which is now the most commonly used in our clothing.
Worse yet, loads of these trendy fast fashion garments end up wasted in landfills, where it can take more than 200 years to decompose.
Fashion's plastic waste is already wreaking havoc on the environment, and these collections only add to the problem.
Image 7: As the character Sasha (played by Ariana Greenblatt) tells Barbie early in the movie: "You're killing the planet with your glorification of rampant consumerism."
The message ironically rings true when it comes to the fast fashion Barbie collections.
Unfortunately, the movie of the summer is once again become another trend exploited by fast fashion giants to make more plastic clothes the world doesn't need.
TL;DR—dress up! Wear pink! But shop your closet and check out the second hand options instead.

barbie was such a disappointment, but retrospectively it shouldn’t have been. i just had misplaced hope for greta gerwig’s skill over libfem capitalism. obviously the set/costumes/aesthetic were perfect but the actual story/plot/message kept contradicting itself and couldn’t make up its own mind. im mad.

The losers club favorite barbie movies:
Eddie: Barbie as Rapunzel. Because he can relate to Rapunzel's feelings of being trapped and a prisoner by their parent. Plus dragons are cool
Tumblr media
Mike: Barbie in the twelve dancing princesses. Mike has a soft spot for tthe theme of family and strength. Makes him think of the losers.
Tumblr media
Richie: Barbie and the diamond castle. Because of how gay the movie it is. Richie has day dreams of running away with Eddie and having a life of their own. With maybe a couple of dogs.
Tumblr media
Ben: Barbie in the Nutcracker. Ben is a romantic.
Tumblr media
Beverley: Barbie and the three musketeers. She loves the outfits, the swords, and the music.
Tumblr media
Stan: Barbie in princess and the pauper. I kind of like to headcanon that Stan has a soft spot for musicals. Plus he loves the song if you love me for me.
Tumblr media
Bill: Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus. Mostly because of the arc between the siblings. Plus flying horses.

i watched barbie recently and i understand your take on it, like when america ferrera delivered her monologues, it just sounded like something i've heard a million times, word for word, it felt less genuine and it didn't move me in any way, just very lazy writing and it's so frustrating like ik they could've done better
Exactly! I don't mind the fact that they focused on feminism at all, I just hate that they went about in the most easy to understand, "ironic", consumable way that could have everyone in the audience patting themselves on the back for understanding something "smart" while delivering nostalgic bliss.
And tbh a lot of the way America Ferrera's character was dealt with reminds me of how WOC are often used as supporting characters to the white woman's sorrow. Like why didn't we hear more about her depression? It just instantly became all about barbie and that part wasn't satisfyingly written. I feel there are a lot of loose plot holes that don't make sense. Everything about America and her daughter was unsatisfying.
But because we're currently in an era of girl power and ironic, cynical, nostalgic consumption, people won't question it, nor will they act like anything was bad about the movie. They'll just keep hyping it up like they're afraid to be wrong.
Also I feel like it's well known, the more popular something is, the more mediocre it probably is. When a movie reaches a lot of people and many can relate to it, it has to be kind of basic in its execution so not to be controversial enough to truly resonate with some people and push away others. Barbie is mediocre by design, it doesn't say anything new that feminism hasn't been saying for years.

Need to get this out for my head, if the Barbie movie was Anti-Men then it would’ve portrayed the Kens as irredeemable monsters, have no Allan, and probably would have killed off Ryan Gosling Ken.

At one point, after being called fascist, Barbie flexes her encyclopedic knowledge of fascist history, “I don’t control the railways and flow of commerce.” So Barbie knows about fascism, and still only cares about cellulite ?? Her big arc is learning to accept her flawless appearance. The only thing she pursues in life is a gynecologist. That’s it, folks. That’s your feminist role model, a woman who takes no interest in anything that’s happening in the world outside of her looks. Great !
Why is it considered feminist and positive for young girls to watch a film where the third-act conflict is resolved by Barbies learning to PLAY DUMB so they can manipulate their boyfriends and get what they want ? It’s the film’s entire resolution, it saves the day ! A montage of Barbies dumbing themselves down so they can manipulate their Kens is how peace is restored in Barbieland. Yikes !
tbh the movie is very much of a failure. not only it’s not feminist or whatever they claim, it wasn’t enjoyable at all. script makes no sense, dialogues are cringe and boring. i didn’t understand a shit about what was its purpose or what story ended with. what it achieved? what we should have learned from it? long ass movie and nothing happened.
sure, again capitalism won. this movie(!) distorted feminism & feminist perspective and diminished its meaning like we do not fight to preserve it for ages.
i can’t believe how many women think it’s a movie of all times, specially made for us.
