For the last six months, my overwhelming feeling has been: we should know better.

For centuries, the Jewish people didn’t have a nation-state--we had a diaspora. And a big part of Jewish identity and culture is born of that diffuse geographic situation: we didn’t have nationalism to hold us together, so we held together through spirituality, history, tradition, language. Now we have a nation-state, and guess what? Turns out we can be just as xenophobic, territorial, and violent as the nation-states that persecuted us throughout our history.

We celebrate hanging Haman on the very gallows he set up for Mordechai. We symbolically mourn the death of the Pharaoh’s first-born, but we acknowledge it as the final blow that facilitated our liberation. We are the children of the Maccabees. This isn’t to say that these are examples to emulate, only that our mythology and history are full of resistance in the face of tyranny, persistence in the face of persecution. If all we have learned from the legacy of antisemitism is self-preservation, then we have missed the more universal lesson: do not persecute people because their identity differs from yours, and do not underestimate the underdog.

When is Israel going to look in a mirror, and recognize our old oppressors in its own face?

We (I’m speaking not personally, but historically) have experienced oppression, ghettoization, dehumanization, and state-sponsored violence. We carry that generational trauma. We should know better.

To deny a people liberty, systematically impoverish them, and keep them under siege for years and decades; to demand that a million civilians evacuate their homes overnight, but prevent them from traveling safely and restrict them so severely that they have nowhere safe to go; to bomb a dense population center, while cutting off access to food, water, medical supplies, and electricity; to send in air strikes as hospitals run out of power—how could you look at such cruelty, and imagine it to be anything other than an attempt to destroy a people, body and spirit?

And Jews know the legacy of persecution with the goal of annihilation. We know the sorrow, the horror, the resilience.

This Passover, I’m giving to the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund. Because what Israel is doing is wrong. Because what the US is aiding and abetting is wrong. Because on this holiday celebrating liberation, I’m watching a government commit genocide while claiming to represent my people.

Because my people should know better.

As a Jewish historian, I fucking hate Israel in ways most probably will never be able to comprehend. I'm going to try and explain it anyways. The central creation myth of Israel is that it is Jewish, and then consequently, that Israel is a part of Jewishness. Its easy to simply state this is false, but fully comprehending this and putting it into practice in thought and deed seems rare to me.

The evil at the heart of this violence predates the recent acceleration of genocide. Israel is a colony, and more than that, an antisemitic fraud itself. After WW2, when Israel was being founded, the Jews of Europe generally did not wave goodbye to their neighbors and head to the promised land. Many were expelled from their homes. Zionism itself, as an action, was a false choice at the time. A mere excuse to place an ally in the middle east, and an excuse to complete the expulsion and destruction of the European Jew. The Zionist Jew is more than complicit in this, they actively seek the destruction and assimilation of all other Jews.

Many fail to realize, and largely because of Israel, that Jews are not inherently white, Ashkenazi, European-descended people. Our faith and culture has an immense variety that is spread all across the globe. Jewishness, in population and volume of culture, exists more so outside of Israel than within it. Israel is for a very specific kind of Jew. The kind that lets Yiddish die, that attaches themselves to European things, that makes themselves and their practices as white as possible.

And they have the nerve, the fucking belligerent GALL, to frame themselves as the necessary saviors of our people. To the Zionist, questioning Israel is to question Jewishness itself. They bake adoration for the colonial machine into their very prayers, and push them on us even as children. To *not* oppress, to *not* kill, to *not* genocide, is to invite death. This is the core of fascistic thought, of course. "Kill them before they kill us." And they KNOW this too, they really do. The truth of that irony does not matter, because as is true for all fascists, the truth itself does not matter to them. They wanted this, they wanted this even before the British saw it in their best interest to give them the land. Any excuse to RETVRN, as the neo-nazis say of Rome, or the German Empire, or whatever the fuck stupid country they want to poorly animate the corpse of. A few weeks ago, I was walking through a Jewish neighborhood in Jerusalem.

An Arab deliveryman had parked his motorbike on a busy street. He layed out a mat on the sidewalk and began his prayers.

What happened next was shocking.

People started walking past and noticing him. They kept walking. Nobody bothered him. Not one comment, not one glare.

And a Muslim man stops to practice his religion in public, completely confident in the knowledge that he's safe to do so.

Jews are scared to show any signs of their religion even in cities like New York and London.
