i have two more mcs besides her (as always lol) but for now!!! anne briars returns!! After getting her heart broken by a monochrome menace in her hometown, anne packs her shit and makes a run for fairfield, ny, usa. Her major in law (and minor in psychology) threw everyone for a loop, considering she'd wanted to drop out of high school. Nevertheless! she's back to her usual bullshit, despite the intense workload. With a closet filled with various aesthetics, she makes her keyframes debut!

Like the infamous campus boyfriend, many take their shot at a date with this peppy girl, but unlike Mr. Porter, Anne welcomes the attention. She's alot more sarcastic than her reputation claims, and some would claim her "too" approachable. Regardless, if you need anything at all--she's there to help!

YEEEES, EXACTLY!! And like, I get the time limit especially when Baxter's DLC is the longest and it's clear to see why, but it does move a little fast. At the same time, in the moment of rewriting it all, it kind of worked more for me and I think what really helped was being able to incorporate more dialogue and scenes.

Like when Xavier can insinuate that the MC and Baxter are the couple at the bakery-- that only happens with certain lines if you chose to act professional so I would never get that officially in my playthrough with my too heartbroken to deal with this MC, but it would still work in the moment.

Or the car ride-- having the 'professional' conversation before my MC can no longer take it and asks him to talk and they pull over works more than her immediately cutting him off to begin with.

The scene at his apartment after the wedding as well-- I usually pick the break-down crying option which works best for Jemma, but she would go through so much of the other dialogue if we could pick more than one so it was fun getting to weave things together and I genuinely adore the dynamic between the two of them a lot.

Going to put more of my personal MC talk under the cut since I know I don't know how to shut up.

I always had Step 3 be a rather hard one for Jemma, even before Baxter's route was fully finalized. She enjoys doing too much, she doesn't know what she wants to do in the future, and doesn't handle change well.

On top of that, her shyness has her feeling lonely sometimes even in her friend group feeling more like she's part of it due to Cove more so than anything on her part and generally feeling if she didn't run into him on that hill, he'd easily have found someone else to befriend instead (the truth of it doesn't matter-- it's just how she feels deep down) so when Baxter ended up purposely seeking her out and asking in Step 2, it made her feel really special and then combined with what he can say in Step 3 at the country club, she fell hard.

If it was anyone else, she wouldn't have agreed to such a thing. In a way, she didn't even confirm she was okay with that so much as saying she understood his reasoning. And she goes into it hoping maybe it can turn into more.

But… Maybe something could change. Maybe it'd go so well, he'd reconsider? He said he wasn't claiming to be, but that didn't mean he couldn't be. You still had shortly under three months together. That's a lot of time. You already had one miracle, maybe another wasn't impossible?

And then when Summer ended and she already had to deal with Cove saying he wouldn't be her neighbor anymore (too big of a chance, too much of a constant), still struggling what she even wanted to go to college for, and then gets told by the one person who she felt reached out solely due to her doesn't even want to talk to her anymore, let alone anything more, it really breaks her and part of her remains frozen in place with that door slammed in her face.

Which is why she just crumbles apart when he finally lets her into his apartment just to talk. But adding all those other things she could say while she's bawling adds a lot more to the scene and extends it all longer in a way that I felt works more.

Because no matter how much she still has feelings for him, she's terrified of reaching out and causing him to run away again which is why he ends up having to confess to her. She won't admit how she feels or say anything further because she's worried he'll be scared off. Even though he's never ceased being both her friend and someone very important to her-- he's the only one who thought otherwise.

But yeah, Jemma goes through the full range of defeat, sadness, and even some anger and she will fight for that fairy tale even when he's being an idiot. And to make things worse, Jemma ends up blaming herself nearly as much as she's upset with him.

I think I've done like 2-3 AUs on the situation too at this point because it's just so good a dynamic. A friend and I did a silly Dance AU thing where they end up re-meeting sooner after Soiree and there's so much more underlying anger and cruelness to it by doing that.

It's just such an interesting dynamic and I really love writing along with it and this is why Baxter Ward has single-handedly had me in a chokehold since May. Darn you, sir.

Partially just felt like writing this up due to the Anti-propaganda in the Most Dateable Poll in conjunction with something I spoke about with a friend a while back when first doing my rewrite-esque of things.

Baxter is absolutely kind of a mess, but he's still honest in the sense that he outright stated:

This wasn't a romantic thing (and he can even say how he isn't much of one depending on the choices you make)

It's for the Summer, no more, no less.

That he doesn't think of himself as the MC's 'one and only'.

He also literally won't ask if you admit to having a crush on him in any present sense-- only if you had the crush from the Soiree (which he makes an assumption that it's not necessarily still relevant which has its own irony attached to it*) as he doesn't intend to (or at least hopes he won't) hurt the MC.

And yet he can admit at the end that he had a crush on the MC as well if you tell him when he's breaking up with you/saying goodbye.

He only ever goes as far as the MC seems comfortable with, which he likely assumes (or what I more expect, hopes and denies the possibility that it's going too far-- in for a penny, in for a pound after all) is okay within those deadlines. Even when the MC suggests going into their hotel room during Mountains, it had to be confirmed you want that.

And only then does he actually have the option to make the first move physically because he already thinks it's what the MC wants and is okay with.

In a similar sense, if you've seen all of his moments and aren't dating (whether it be because you didn't ask about his relationship status, rejected him asking/didn't want to take it lightly, or said you had a crush in present times), you have the option to kiss him in Planning if it's the last moment regardless. (Italicized text is the same as if you kissed him while dating)

You knew what you wanted. You kissed him. As you pressed your lips to his, Baxter let out a quiet chirp of surprise. You had caught him off guard, and though he didn't pull away, he was wary. His body was hunched, tense, but after a moment he apparently decided to throw caution to the wind. His shoulders relaxed, and his jaw began to move in rhythm with yours. The way he hastily pressed into your lips was like he knew he'd regret it later. You suspected that somewhere in his mind, he considered this to be a misstep he was making. And all too soon, he carefully pulled back. Your heart was racing. You could feel a matching sensation through his shirt, an agitated staccato. Baxter let out a heavy breath, pressing a hand to his sternum. His pale complexion was stained with a vibrant flush. It was such a captivating color, in contrast to his usual monochrome. He cleared his throat and leaned away to place his champagne flute over on one of the coffee tables nearby, eyes avoidant. Baxter: "Perhaps it's best-not to be too distracted when we decorate the cakes after all. Or drunk, for that matter." This was directed inwardly as much as it was to you. A low murmur; an attempt to calm himself. Neither of you said a word about what had happened. The room lulled into silence, the heady buzz of the past few minutes fading slowly.

And in a way, it's a type of selfishness on both sides. The MC either is hoping things can change and/or feels too strongly to risk not having it at all and despite Baxter putting out the offer in the first place and having feelings for the MC, he can't see why he would still be valued when he can't physically be there and that setting a deadline on feelings doesn't necessarily work.

But there's still that underlying selfishness for the MC as well because, regardless of those feelings, Baxter did say he only wanted the relationship for the Summer. And even if he says it's fine if they say no, he still clearly wants their companionship-- more so than he will admit to himself.

In the same sense, this kiss moment in planning can happen after Baxter says how the MC will find those kinds of people who will always remain in their life and that while "nobody can say for sure, I'd bet that you already have." Depending on the choice you pick, you can essentially say your MC included him in it. There's even one choice that straight up asks in which he apologizes for giving you that idea, but if you don't and the MC chooses to kiss him, I do wonder if part of that hesitancy, as he has it even if you're dating, is that he possibly did give you the wrong idea-- he doesn't say anything (and the other part is him making sure he doesn't drink more to not do anything he'd regret), but there is still this uncharacteristic nervousness in both counts.

And yes, he can completely break your heart, but the MC can also be understanding and break it off fine understanding the time limit on it... until it affects their friendship as well. Because while Baxter said their romantic relationship was temporary, he never suggested for their friendship to be too.

And that's the constant problem. Baxter doesn't see what he can offer by just being. He says as much when breaking up with the MC where he won't be there to "give you rides or make cupcakes together or take you out for drinks. We can't sightsee or go on trips." Why would the MC still want to talk to him just to hear him? Check up on him? It doesn't make sense.

So when Step 4 happens, he makes it worse by trying to act like that past relationship doesn't matter. And it's interesting because, at least according to GB Patch, how he felt between Step 3 and Step 4 varies based off how your MC took the situation.

If the MC was fine with it and took it for what it was: A fun Summer fling, then he does feel bad about not reaching out, but still more or less moves on to some extent (still nothing serious though).

If the MC was heartbroken, the guilt more or less eats him alive. He regrets it and feels awful, but doesn't feel he deserves to reach out no matter how much the MC tries to still message him anyway.

He keeps the souvenirs, he keeps the MC's number, he still thinks of their time together and just doesn't think he deserves to fix it until it finally hits him that he's being stupid by forcing himself to stay unhappy when the MC isn't the one pulling away.

Anyway, I don't really know why I felt like typing all this out. I just like talking about him too much and his silliness until he stops being a butt.

*. I think about the dialogue for the Soiree crush a lot because god, Baxter, what did you think the MC would do after hearing you say something like this? Like if they hadn't already fallen hard...

Baxter: You know, that's incredible. It really is. He murmured an aside to himself, under his breath. Baxter: In for a penny… Then he addressed you directly, his eyes still bright. Baxter: As it happens, the first person to turn my head after the first was somebody I met only once. It caught me completely off guard, to tell you the truth. It was years ago. At this very country club, in fact. I didn't know anything about this person, and yet such a strong impression was left on me that I've never forgotten it since. I wonder who that could have been? His manner was light, teasing. Full of all sorts of implications that made your head spin. So he'd felt it too, all that time ago. You hadn't been the only one swept away in the magic of it all. And maybe you weren't the only one lying awake that night, thoughts full of a stranger's smile. You couldn't quite believe it. The thought of it had you giddy. You beamed at Baxter, your cheeks flushed and full of warmth. He smiled in return. He didn't say anything more about that night, but you had already gotten everything you could have possibly wanted. You felt as if you were walking on air for the whole rest of the day.

Briar is a little out of touch with Christmas, but will occasionally get the longing to celebrate it again. She has fond memories of it as a kid, and even a bit into her teenage years, but time (and Lucifer) have changed her, so she hardly thinks about it anymore. When that time of year does roll around and Lucifer gets the sense that she’s feeling a bit nostalgic, he’ll find some cheap christmas decorations, put them up at wherever they happen to be holed up at the time, and surprise her with his half assed effort and a genuine little gift.
