So who in totals travelled with the doctor? I know we saw donna, but what other companions are there?

This is gonna be a big one, so *Takes a deep breath* In his first incarnation, the First Doctor started his travels with his granddaughter Susan, accidentally taking her school teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright. Along his travels, people would come and go, including Vicki Pallister, Steven Taylor, Katarina, Sara Kingdom, Oliver Harper, Dodo Chaplet, Ben Jackson and Polly Wright.

In his second incarnation, the Second Doctor would continue his travels with Ben and Polly, taking on Jamie McCrimmon, who would stick with him through his life. Along the way, The Doctor would also travel with Victoria Waterfield and Zoe Heriot. It was during this time that The Doctor would also meet Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart, who would become an important figure during his most of his lives.

In exile is his third incarnation, the Third Doctor was forced to work with the Brigadier as UNIT's scientific advisor. Working initially with Liz Shaw, Mike Yates and John Benton, he would finally be able to travel again, first with Jo Grant, and later Sarah-Jane Smith.

In his fourth incarnation, continuing to travel with Sarah-Jane Smith and joined by Harry Sullivan, the Fourth Doctor would go on to travel with Naomi Cross, Leela of the Sevateem, Margaret Hopwood, two models of the robot dog K9, "Anne Kelso", Romana in two of her incarnations and Adric.

In his fifth incarnation, The Doctor continued travelling with Adric and took on Nyssa of Trakken and Tegan Jovanka, who he had met towards the end of his previous incarnation. Along the way, he would also travel with Marc, Thomas Brewster, Hannah Bartholomew, Vislor Turlough, Peri Brown and Erimem.

Still travelling with Peri in his sixth incarnation, The Doctor would travel with others including Frobisher, Evelyn Smythe, Charlotte Pollard (retroactively under the guise of Mila due to already travelling with his Eighth Incarnation), Flip Jackson, Constance Clarke, Melanie Bush and Hebe Harrison.

Continuing to travel with Mel in his seventh Incarnation, the Doctor would go on to be joined by Ace McShane, Bernice Summerfield, Hex Schofield, Sally Morgan, Lysandra Aristedes, Mags, Raine Creevy, Elizabeth Klein, Will Arrowsmith, Chris Cwej and Roz Forrester, though ultimately ended up travelling on his home.

The Eighth Doctor would find himself starting afresh, briefly meeting Grace Holloway and Chang Lee, before going on to travel with Izzy Sinclair, Fitz Kreiner, Charlotte Pollard, C'rizz, Mary Shelley, Lucie Miller, Tamsin Drew, Molly O'Sullivan, Liv Chenka, Helen Sinclair, Tania Bell, Andy Davidson and Bliss.

The War Doctor would go on to make a point of travelling alone, never taking on a travelling companion during his life.

Though he would continue travelling alone for much of his life, the Ninth Doctor would finally yield and take on Rose Tyler as a companion, and later Adam Mitchell, Captain Jack Harkness and Tara Mishra

In his tenth incarnation, The Doctor would continue travelling with Rose, though would later go on to travel with Mickey Smith, Martha Jones, a returning Captain Jack, Donna Noble, Gabby Gonzalez, Cindy Wu, Anya Kingdom and Mark Seven.

The Eleventh Doctor would start his travels with Amy Pond, going on to take on Rory Williams, Alice Obiefune, John Jones, ARC, The Squire, Abslom Daak, The Sapling, Valerie Lockwood and Clara Oswald.

Clara Oswald would continue to travel with the Twelfth Doctor, who would go on to travel with Hattie Munroe, Nardole and Bill Potts.

The Summers that Made Us: 1997

Summary: Leia could easily say her 17th birthday was the worst one yet.

Over the next year, Leia and Jay didn't speak to each other. Which upset them, not that the other knew.

However, the one thing Jay doesn't know - Leia now has a boyfriend.

The way Jay found out? Seeing the girl who makes his heart flutter like no other girl, was seeing her climb out of the car, after a young man - only to have him throw his arm over her shoulder. Then a kiss to her cheek, similar to the one he gave her the first summer.

And his heart shattered.

She had completely moved on from him, when he knew that no-one would make his heart race like Leia Anne Forman.

Safe to say, Jay tried to spend as much time as possible avoiding Leia and her new shiny boyfriend.

But, it didn't last long.

The day of Leia Anne Forman's 17th birthday, the gang plus Leia's boyfriend were hanging in the Forman basement. Leia's boyfriend - who Jay refused to learn the name of, had gone upstairs to get another can of Coke.

When the phone rang. It rang for a few moments, until Leia got up from the very old yellow couch - Jay was surprised it hadn't fallen apart yet.

"I'll get it!" she called to her grandparents, who still had a corded telephone somewhere in the house. She pulled up the silver receiver, answered the phone as she stepped away from the group.

It wasn't until a few moments later when ass-face (a nickname Jay had just come up with for Leid's boyfriend) came down the stairs, an open can of Coke in his hand, that Leia walked over to him holding the phone out.

"There's someone on the phone for you, darling," she told him, an almost sickly-sweet smile on her face. Jay hadn't been hanging around the pair for long but he knew she wouldn't call ass-face 'darling'.

But Leia looked pissed and also heartbroken.

"Leia?" Jay got up from one of the chairs he had claimed, and was by her side in a matter of moments. "What's happening? What's the matter?"

He very nearly took her face between his hands, when ass-face had hung up the phone and was trying to speak to Leia.

Jay paid no attention to him. "Leia?" This time he did cup her face with his hands pulling her attention back to him. He spoke so softly it almost couldn't be heard with human ears, but Leia heard it.

"Why don't you tell my friends about your other girlfriend?" Leia asked, looking over Jay's shoulder at her (definitely now) ex-boyfriend.

Gwen and Nikki pounced, and the second they did, Jay turned Leia around and they headed upstairs, the sounds of shouting and cursing getting both louder and fainter as they walked.

When they were in the kitchen, Jay watched as Leia got a cup out of the cupboard and got herself a glass of water. "Leia, I'm really sorry."

She shrugged. "Of course my first long term boyfriend had to be a cheater, what else could he be?" The way she said 'long term boyfriend' was only said because Jay was in the room, he doesn't know if she counts their short relationship as a relationship...

But he does.

She puts the glass in the sink and makes her way for the swing door.

"Where are you going?" He asked.

"To either get ice cream or commit a felony. I'll decide in the car," Leia had been waiting to say that since she started watching The Golden Girls with her Grandma last year.

Thankfully, they found themselves sat on the hood of Jay's car.

And they were quiet, digging their plastic spoons into the ice cream pots. When Leia started sniffing.

"Leia?" He looked over at her, and saw the shiny tear forming in the corner of her eye.

"I'm fine."

He said nothing, as he reached over and pulled her into his side. The comfort must have done something, because the moment she was pressed against him, the sniffles turned into quiet whimpers, to hiccups and then into full on sobbing as Leia's head dropped (nearly falling into her ice cream).

"How could he do this to me!"

Once they had eventually calmed down, possibly at the promise of more ice cream, Jay took her home.

Neither noticed the car parked in the driveway, as Jay gently guided her to the front door, opened it and that's when they noticed Leia's mother waiting.

Leia stood motionless, as she took in the sight of her mother. Chicago is nearly 3 hours away, but somehow Donna had dropped everything and come to see Leia in an hour and a half!

"Leia, baby."

"Mommy," was Leia's whimper, as she nearly dropped her ice cream pot and herself if it wasn't for Jay - who quickly grabbed her under her armpits, and as best he could manoeuvred her into the waiting arms of Donna.

Before Leia could wrap her arms around her mother, Jay gently took the ice cream pot from her hand and went to put it in the freezer.

"You're good for her," Kitty said, when Jay shut the freezer.

"I'd do anything for her. Even if that means being her friend."

Iconic ‘Austintatious’ mural became work of a lifetime

Kerry Awn knows they’ve said it before: “This will be the last time.”

But really, this time it has to be true.

He’s 74.

So is Tom Bauman, better known as tommy b. Rick Turner is 75.

The trio who created the “Austintatious” mural in 1973 as University of Texas art students in their early 20s, rendering weird hippie Austin in bright colors on the north outer wall of the University Co-op, never expected they would continue repairing this community treasure well into their 70s.

“We didn’t always realize it was a lifetime job,” Awn told me, breaking into a hearty laugh.

The artists are back this week – Awn from Alpine, Bauman from Driftwood and Turner from New York City – to repaint the central stretch of the iconic, fisheye-lens mural after a tagger scrawled 5-foot-tall letters across it last month.

The three artists had already made plans to be here in April to repair their other mural at the 23rd Street pedestrian mall, “Tejas,” which was vandalized in January. (April seemed a nicer month to be outside painting.)

Both murals were covered in an anti-graffiti coating called Vandl-Guard.

If someone spraypaints on top of that, a companion product called VandlClean can be applied to break down any paints sitting on top of the VandlGuard coating.

At least, that’s the theory.

Turner said the product worked pretty well in protecting the “Tejas” mural, though some touchups are needed.

But the damage to the “Austintatious” mural, which is decades older and painted on a fussier stucco wall, was extensive, requiring repainting of large areas from its depictions of the Texas Capitol to the former Gethsemane Lutheran Church (home to the Texas Historical Commission).

Much of the surreal, cloud-filled body of Stephen F. Austin must also be redone.

The artists, who last saw each other exactly a year ago for a party and official city proclamation celebrating the “Austintatious” mural’s 50th anniversary, picked up the conversation and their paintbrushes as if no time had passed.

I nodded toward a freshly painted green spot where a small figure had been.

“Who was that?” I asked. Awn shrugged. “Some street guy from 30 years ago.”

No one with the staying power to be included in the restoration.

Bauman, who earlier showed me his prized 2002 addition to the mural, an image of his son, Erick, as a 12-year-old Boy Scout on the Capitol steps, interjected: “We reserve the right to subtract as well.”

The mural started as a mirror of 1970s Austin counterculture, featuring figures such as musician Johnny Winter, comic book character Oat Willie and Roland DeNoie, the Salvation Sandwiches vendor who famously sparred with UT and city officials.

The mural reflected a time when that stretch of the Drag “was the center of the universe,” Awn said, alongside a thriving artists’ market and the church basement where the People’s Community Clinic (previously the People’s Free Clinic) got its start.

But the mural was no time capsule.

New figures were added with each restoration, including former Gov. Ann Richards and former U.S. Rep. Barbara Jordan (peering out windows in the Capitol), actor Matthew McConaughey (naked with a bongo drum), cartoon character Hank Hill (on his riding mower), and the late American-Statesman humor columnist John Kelso (in his typical tropical print shirt).

The mural changes, Bauman said, “because Austin changes.”

At the outset, none of the artists expected the mural to last this long.

They have lives and commitments elsewhere.

They’re proud of this mural, but they can’t tend to it each time a vandal strikes.

If this is a cherished Austin landmark – and there’s no doubt it is – then it needs greater community ownership.

Kelli Hanks, director of operations for the University Co-Op (which owns the wall and provides the paint for restorations), told me she’s brainstorming possible partnerships for UT art students or someone else to make any future repairs when needed.

Meanwhile, documentary filmmaker Mike Woolf launched a stunning interactive website last year (23rdstreetmural. com) to preserve some of the stories of characters in the mural. But there are more stories to tell, and sponsors are needed to underwrite that work. “These three guys are part of the reason (Austin) was cool in the first place,” Woolf told me Monday afternoon, as we watched Awn, Bauman and Turner bring the mural back to life, one brushstroke at a time. Though Turner lives the farthest away, he returns to Austin about once a year. He can tell the speed of change is accelerating. But when he visits, he stays on his sister’s 2.5-acre tract near Mueller in an Airstream trailer among a few older cottages that can accommodate all kinds of guests. Turner smiled. “It’s very much like old hippie Austin,” he said.
