Finally finishing all these guys we’ve got charts and headcanons! (Long post)
Tumblr media
(Height)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Wingspan)
Tumblr media
(Body length & basic shapes I used) (it might be odd but ignore any detail on the back, the shapes are for general body shape)
Headcanons:
Seawings: - Colors range from red and purple to yellow - Aquatic is based off areas of bioluminescence rather than singular scales (because no one wants to draw all of those) - Although they average small compared to the other tribes, gigantism is more common - Wing bioluminescence gene is always present but for some doesn't show, thus aquatic doesn't utilize the wings
Rainwings: - Can change the texture of their scales alongside color - Weakest bite due to their fangs, probably why they're vegetarian - Mimic interesting behaviors - Have forked tongues
Mudwings: - Colors range from olive green to purple-ish red - Very resilient - Able to breathe fire regardless of body temperature, the heat of the flame depends on body temp - Their horns constantly grow and sometimes have to be cut due to dangerous growing patterns - Love gnawing on things, tough foods like jerky is popular - The horn covers of fallen siblings are harvested and turned into instruments to remember them by
Leafwings: - Colors range from gold to teal (and pink to olive green during cold seasons) - Can appear to have false eyes - Bug-like just like the other Pantalan residents (because they're just some weird outlier like what is going on here) - Leafspeak doesn't actually allow them to hear voices from plants but rather increase the sensitivity of their antennae which pick up on the changes in plants - In colder seasons, regions that have deciduous trees influence leafwings in that their scales change into warm tones similar to fallen leaves for camouflage but this also negatively impacts one's leafspeak ability; this doesn't apply to evergreen leafwings however
Hivewings: - Colors range from hot pink to olive green - Can appear to have false eyes - Have elbowed antennae just like their "cousins", Hymenoptera (wasps, bees, ants) - Tend to disregard personal space/get close out of habit, being close means better temp regulation and better communication - All hivewings have stingers, wrist stingers, and a venomous bite but it largely depends on preference of which they choose and like muscles, they can be exercised to become deadly weapons - They're not capable of "emitting a horrible stench"
Icewings: - Colors range from white to pale indigo - Melanism is still very rare but more likely in icewings - Can be iridescent in any color, especially visible in lighter scaled individuals - The scales on their face is very fine and is flushed with blood which darkens the area and allows them to see in the snow by absorbing light, otherwise the glare from the sun reflecting off would be a hinderance - Their wings are thin and thus have visible veins most of the time - Idk how to describe their scales other than its kinda like basalt formations - From the side they appear large but are actually thin and flexible - They can freeze to death if they've gone without cold for a long time and then reintroduced too quickly - In hybridization, they have dominant genes, partially because the animus gene - The extra mane of horns can appear randomly on the body in singular spikes, they also make a clink sound when they collide as if they're made of ice, making a pretty scary rattle when disturbed
Nightwings: - Colors range from orange to purple - Albinism is still very rare but more likely in nightwings - Dwarfism is more common - Teardrop scales are always present, highlighted when the dragon has powers regardless of type - Pitbull ready to bite kids - They CAN hang upside down as the books suggest but not for long - By taking dust baths, they dull their scales to reflect less light and blend in better in the dark - Have white fire but cant breathe for long due to how hot it is (this is mainly to add onto the mysterious factor of em and I always liked the idea) - Due to eye sensitivity, they hate sudden bright lights and will close their eyes as they breathe fire
Silkwings: - Can have black or dark accents but never as a whole body color unless they've hybridized - Wing shapes vary widely - Can appear to have false eyes - Flamesilk is rarer than one might think - Very flexible and have strong tails used as a sort of 5th limb in climbing - Albino or melanistic dragons still keep their iridescence - Silk is emitted through a spinneret on the chin rather than the wrists - Prefer to travel in pairs (instinct)
Sandwings: - Colors range from red to olive green - Dark patters often mimic a snake's - Horse-like in complexion - Alongside their snake-like appearance, they have pit organs - Tend to move like birds - Poor eyesight but good hearing - Their horns angle upwards sort of like a bull
Skywings: - Colors range from red to yellow (and green because skywings are meant to be your typical fire breathing dragon which is most often depicted to be red but can also be green) - Tend to move like birds - Weaker than they appear - Green skywings are incapable of being or having flamescales - Their horns constantly grow and have to be filed down - A flamescale cant melt rock or metal by touch alone, only via fire is it possible - It's not that they don't want flamescales that they kill them, it's more of a mercy killing because of how lonely their life can be

Went extinct a little before Earthwings, but after Soarwings
Range in colors found in the water, from the blues of the waves to the pinks of coral
Powers:
Ability to hold breath for a long time
Webbed talons
Powerful swimmers
Strong tails
Night vision
The Dividing Era:
The period that followed the Scorching, when the tribes began to split up and organize into proper tribes and cultures.
Insectwing:
Status: Extinct
Evolved from Earthwings who lived in exclusively jungles; happened a little while after the scorching
Went extinct a while later after their tribe mostly became Beetlewings while the rest became Sandwings
Colors can range between yellows, greens, and browns
Began to develop another set of wings, though they are currently useless
Powers:
Deadly poison that can be injected via bite or tail
Leafspeak (extremely rare)

What remained of the Earthwings who continued to live in the forest while the Insectwings moved to the jungles
Colors range in shades of greens and with hints of colors found in nature
Powers:
Leafspeak (uncommon)
Can absorb energy from sunlight
Icewing:
Status: Healthy
Split from Aquawings to live exclusively in the icy tundra
Range in shades of white with blue-tinted accents
Where the first animus was found
Powers
Freezing ice breath
Serrated claws
Withstanding cold temperatures
Night vision
Sandwing:
Status: Healthy
Result of continuous breeding between Insectwings and Skywings
Moved to the desert because of space; no one else wanted to live there
Lost the second set of wings completely from Insectwings
Colors range in shades of tan and brown
Powers:
Fire
Deadly venom (only in tail)
Can survive in hot environments for long amounts of time
Can survive with little water and food for long amounts of time
Radiates heat
Beetlewing:
Status: Extinct
Evolved from Insectwings who didn’t breed with Earthwings
Formed 2 sets of wings that are fully functional
Can come in any color, usually bright colors
Powers:
Deadly venom that can be administered through tail
Antennae that can sense things around
The Growing Era:
An era where there is a lot more mixing of tribes and the start of a more civilized way of life
Seawings:
Status: Healthy
Formed out of what was left of the Aquawings who didn’t move to the arctic, began to become more and more aquatic
Colors can range in shades of blues, greens, and accents of different colors found in the sea
Powers:
Ability to breathe underwater
Webbed talons
Powerful swimmers
Strong tails
Strong night vision
Bioluminescent scales
Rainwings:

Colors can range from anything
Powers:
Color-changing scales
Prehensile tails
Deadly venom in teeth
Nightwings:
Status: Endangered
Formed from Skywings who left to become nocturnal and pursue knowledge and sciences
Mind reading and future sight was a gift from an animus
Toxic bite did not develop until after living on the volcanic island
Colors can range in shades of dark gray and black
Powers:
Fire
Mind Reading and/or future sight (rare)
Night vision
The Modern Era:
The newest dragon tribes that just recently came to be
Mudwings:
Status: Healthy
Formed from continuous breeding between Seawings and Skywings
Often treated as less by the Phyrrian dragons because of how recently the tribe was formed
Colors can range in shades of browns and greens
Powers:
Can hold breath for long periods of time
Can be healed by mud
Can breathe fire if warm enough
Hivewings:
Status: Healthy
Evolved mostly from Beetlewings, only with Clearsight’s small genetics mixed in
Was created because of the impact Clearsight left, every dragon wanted to be like her, so any dragon with black scales was deemed a descendant of Clearsight; every dragon with black scales began breeding more than usual, eventually creating Hivewings
Colors range in shades of yellows and blacks
Kept the four sets of wings from Beetlewings
Powers:
Venom and/or stingers in teeth or tails (uncommon)
Silkwings:
Status: Healthy
Formed of what was left of the Beetlewings that didn’t have black on their scales
Have been seen as inferior to Hivewings for a while since they didn’t have any black scales
Flamesilks were originally a rare mutation that grew as the Hivewings began selectively breeding them
Colors range from any color under the sun except black
Powers:
Antennae
Can produce silk from their wrists

Some more dragons
To give more context to people! Yes this story sounds very silly but I was trying to make things work with the tons of headcanons I have lol
Geno (sky/ice), Fresh(rain/ice), and Error(night/ice) are all half-brothers (they share the same mother who is now dead) They live in the rainforest together between the Nightwing and Rainwing territories
Geno is sickly and often needs a scarf or blankets to make him feel warmer. He sustained injuries to an attack to the rainforest and Error found out he was an animus by wishing his brother to stay alive
Fresh is a very clever hybrid who can change the colors of his scales but not as well as full Rainwings. He tends to stay either bright colors mixed with his original white
Error learned he was an animus after an attack on the rainforest, he's best friends with Ink despite always getting mad at the happy-go-lucky rainwing (Error is cousins with Cross but that'll like never get brought up or found out by any of them)
Ink is just a regular Rainwing but is friends with the hybrids out of the village so people thing he's a little funky. He's an artist through and through and Error gives him a giant brush that makes his drawings come to life using his animus powers
Dream and Nightmare are both twin Nightwing/Sandwing princes (Nightmare got bullied too hard for being a "bastard prince" even though Dream is also one) Both are empaths and can feel other's emotions!
A massacre happens in the Sandwing Kingdom when the royal family (trying to stay pure) tries to kill Nightmare when Dream isn't around. Nightmare escapes, angry that his brother got better treatment than him, while killing many other dragons in the process
Blue is a royal Seawing guard in training even though his parents wanted him to be a cook and Red is a Skywing who is captive by the queen since he was experimented on by his father (scientist)
Reaper is an outcasted Nightwing due to accidentally killing people with just a touch (animus curse by xgaster) He uses it to his advantage with his Nightwing powers by being able to prophecy someone’s future or find parts of their past. He is known as this Reaper judge that gets sent for when giant disputes happen and the Queens of the tribes need to figure out who to punish. When he meets Geno, who is also animus touched to not die, Reaper is fascinated that he is able to touch Geno
The broad animus stuff is due to Xgaster (Nightwing who is part of a split tribe situation with eviler Nightwings lol) trying experiments on Nightwing eggs to make their dragonets stronger. I imagine its a group still like wanting to be better than every other tribe and resides in the old Nightwing palace
Cross is a Nightwing who is gonna stop his dad in the big storyline
MURDER TRIO! All of them are dragons that were outcasted and seen as incompetent or needed a home. They pledged their allegiance to the Sandwing prince Nightmare and promised to help him take the throne.
Dust is an animus prince in the Icewing tribe that went crazy after killing his siblings, he tends to be calm but becomes crazed easily and can kill easily with his powers (although he tends not to use them anyways and is just a very good fighter). He created a cloak to calm himself down and he tends to keep it over himself. He actually ran away because the judge (Reaper) was going to be sent to their tribe
Killer is a Rainwing that was captured and trained to fight in the now shut down Skywing arena. He was used as target practice for his changing scales and they even burned a target onto his chest so they'd always be able to see him even when his scales changed
Horror is a bigwings who watched all his sibs die during a famine in the Mud kingdom (due to drought). Older Mudwings tried to kill him for being a waste of space but he escaped and joined Nightmare.

Here's an idea I think you might enjoy: animus but Des is in their head, controlling them. They can feel it and talk to him and everything, ratatouille style.
……………… You know what would be funny, nonny?
If Desmond sucks at controlling them.
Like, we’ve heard the rites of passage in AC games:
We make them jump instead of doing a leap of faith
We accidentally make them climb the wrong high building and the actual viewpoint is the tower next to it
We miscalculate a jump and fall into the waters below or into an unsuspecting civilian
And there’s the game specific problems I refuse to believe I’m the only one who suffered thru it.
So just imagine Desmond trying to control them in the Animus and they know they’re being controlled.
There’s this… change in the air around them. It feels more charged. More… mysterious.
And they also become clumsier for some goddamn reason.
Incidents include:
Altaïr falling into the waters in the docks of Acre for the fifteenth time and he just hisses under his breath, “What is wrong with you?! Do you enjoy seeing me wet?!” and Desmond’s just “Dude, your control sucks!” which leads to Altaïr having an argument with Desmond under his breath about how his ‘control’ (whatever that means) does not suck, Desmond just sucks at this thing he likes to call ‘platforming’ and they both just agreed that, yeah, okay, they’re gonna assassinate Sibrand by going around instead even if it meant Altaïr had to walk slowly and pretend to be praying the entire time.
Altaïr breathing heavily as he glared at the ten (nope, five more guards found him in open combat, damn it) guards trying to kill him. One of them stepped forward and raised his sword. Altaïr readied himself and he still got hit, “(Growl)! Desmond! Get your timing right!” “Your Hidden Blade counter timing is too fast, Altaïr! Let’s just use your swor-” “No! You will learn how to counter using the hidden blade or, I swear, I will find a way to control you and drill it to your body myself!” (Guards just glance at each other, thinking “oh shit, he’s insane”)
Ezio just staring into the sky as he places his hands on his waist as he called out, “Desmond! How about we try this again later?” “No! I almost got it!” “……… It’s been an hour, Desmond. Let’s try clearing this tomb after-” “No! We’re gonna get that Armor today if it’s the last thing we do! Just… this goddamn time limit is annoying! Time limit sucks!” Ezio who is already used to the mysterious voice (who calls himself Desmond)’s strange words: “………… (sigh)”
“I can take them out. Desmond, please, I’m begging you, let me take them out. I can do-” (Desmond takes control and Ezio watches as his recruits take down the targets) The recruits looking at Ezio for approval. Ezio: Bene, that was a good takedown. (inside, Ezio is just tired because Desmond is enjoying all this ‘summoning’ thing too much…)
“Why can’t we have different lethal bombs?! You have the ingredients for it!” “I don’t know, Desmond. Could we just please finish preparing all the bombs?” “Dude, wouldn’t it be better if we have, like, all of these bombs?” “… I don’t think I have enough space in belt for all of them…” “You should get a bag.” “(Sigh) Desmond, we already talked about this. This Animus of yours don’t allow more ‘inventory’, right?” (inside, Ezio is wondering what his life has become that he sorta kinda understand the words leaving his mouth)
“Desmond… I’m imploring you to not mess this up.” “I’m trying, man, this is hard.” “Who are you talking to, Haytham?” “Ziio! No… no one.” “…” “… sigghhh… Desmond say hello to Ziio.” “Hi, Ziio.” “… is this a curse placed upon you white men?” “…” “…” “…” “Perhaps.” “Sorta?”
“You are a Templar. May the Father of Understanding guide us.” “May the Father of Understanding guide us.” “Wait, what?!” “…” “…” “Master Kenway, is something the matter?” “… no, Charles. I simply… remembered something foul.”
“It’s okay, Desmond. You’ll get this soon enough. Just take a deep breath and………… Desmond. Desmond. Please stop doing whatever you’re doing right now. My head is starting to hurt.” “It’s not me! The cameras of these tree view points sucks ass!”
“How is it you came to captain a ship, given the way you sail?” “Oh, screw you, Haytham! You wanna talk shit, why don’t you try doing this shit yourself, huh?!” “…” “…” “…” “… Apologies, father. Desmond was out of line.” “No, I’m not, fuck you, Haytham!” “I can say with absolute delight I have not missed you one bit, Desmond.” “Bite me, tacohead.” “I still do not know what that means.”

In the latest chapter, actress Gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen in the upcoming rendition of Snow White, has been subject to these same targeted attacks. As images of Gadot in the new role surfaced, the “humanitarians” and “anti-racists” emerged from their “safe spaces for intersectional liberation” to launch a witch hunt against Gadot for her Israeli Nationality, explaining “how fitting” it was for Gadot to play a “character that tries to kill a child and steal her kingdom.” Content creators with huge platforms immediately demanded that their audience boycott Snow White in protest of Gadot’s participation, with others parroted the old antisemitic trope that she was only cast because “Jews run the world”
To be clear: this was not a boycott against the war in Gaza, against Netanyahu, against the Likkud, against settlements, or against Ben-Gvir. No. This was a Jewish boycott.
This is not the first we’ve seen of the Jewish boycott. Earlier this year, Marvel erased the Israeli heritage of Sabra, a Jewish superhero, seemingly to appease the anti-racists who were offended by her race.
This Jewish boycott is often found in art-dominated spaces, where radical liberals most susceptible to this mind virus tend to congregate.
We’ve seen Jewish and Israeli artists ostracized from the arts and entertainment industries purely for their ethnicity or nationality alone. In July, a British art museum canceled a show by Israeli artist Pomidor (which was about Russian dissidents resisting Putin’s oppression and had nothing to do with the Israel-Hamas conflict) purely because she was Israeli, and released a statement reflecting the same. To be sure, Pomidor had not posted anything about the war except on Oct. 7 to stand with the victims of those massacred. My good friend Zoe Buckman, a British Jewish artist from Hackney now living in New York, has been frequently made the target of such attacks and boycotts against her works as a Jewish artist (again, her works having nothing to do with the conflict and despite constantly expressing her solidarity with both Jews and Palestinians but calling for an end to antisemitic hate crimes), even having a prominent voice in the art world change her Instagram handle to “Zoe Buckman’s number one hater” and encouraging peers to disassociate with her.
One would like to imagine that as our world advances, we progressively mature from the animus of bigotry, race-based hate, and xenophobia in all forms. While fronting as reasonable, antisemites and anti-Zionists trade acceptance only for purity, requiring Jews loudly shed themselves of all ties to Israel in exchange for entry into the “progressives” club - something that thousands of years of stateless persecution dictates the vast majority of Jews cannot do.

“We Rock ‘n’ Rollers Will Resist—And We Will Triumph!
When the Smoke Cleared on Disco Demolition Night, Debate Over Its Cultural Meaning Began.
— October 26, 2023 | Kirstin Butler
Tumblr media
Courtesy Chicago Sun-Times. Photo by Jack Lenahan
In the bright glare of Comiskey Park’s stadium lights, the rising column of smoke takes on a spectral quality. Riot police approach from the right to close in on the phantom, a smoldering pile of vinyl records, at center field. Debris litters the turf below; haze obscures the deck above. Disco Demolition Night, as captured here by a Chicago Sun-Times staff reporter, had turned into something far more out-of-control than a promotional stunt during a double header.
The July 12, 1979 event was the brainchild of a Chicago shock-jock-style radio personality, 24-year-old Steve Dahl, and Mike Veeck, Chicago White Sox promotions manager and son of the baseball club’s owner. Dahl had become a self-appointed anti-disco activist the previous Christmas Eve when he lost his job; his then-employer had switched overnight from rock to an all-disco playlist, following a nationwide trend that saw many radio stations jump on the disco hype train.
Dahl landed at WLUP 97.9, another rock station, where he developed a loyal following. He opened each morning’s broadcast with a ritual: According to a 2019 interview with NPR, Dahl would first cue up a disco song, and then after a harsh record scratch, play the sound of an explosion. He began hosting “Death to Disco” rallies at local Chicago nightclubs, and his band, Teenage Radiation, recorded a disco parody track (sample lyric: “Look at my hair, it's perfect/I saw Saturday Night Fever/Eighty-seven times”). “We have to destroy all disco, it’s our job,” Dahl told his listeners. He planned to make good on his destructive mission, literally, by blowing up a cache of disco records at a local mall. When Veeck learned of the idea, he offered Dahl a much larger venue for the pyrotechnics. The event would take place on one of Comiskey Park’s teen nights.
Dahl was tapping into an animus that had as much to do with anxiety over the zeitgeist as dislike of a musical genre. “It’s worth remembering now that in 1979, the economy and economic opportunities for people who don’t have a college education is actually shrinking,” Adam Green, a professor of African American history and cultural studies at the University of Chicago, told American Experience. “The city is changing because of things that have to do with the economy and politics; it’s not changing because of disco music. But if Steve Dahl says that he’s been screwed by disco, it gives permission to other people to say, ‘you know what? I’ve been screwed too.’”
youtube
Steve Dahl’s band recorded an anti-disco parody of Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy.”
Disco had first emerged earlier in the decade, evolving out of funk, R&B and soul music; its innovators were Black, gay and Latino, and its milieu was the underground nightclub, where those marginalized groups found safe spaces to socialize. However, once record labels realized the genre’s commercial potential, disco music went mass market. And those now-mainstream clubs where disco was played (of which Studio 54 in New York City was the ne plus ultra) developed an elitist cachet that alienated the young, mostly white working class Chicagoans who listened to Dahl. With songs like “Y.M.C.A.,” “Night Fever” and “I Will Survive” topping the Billboard charts, the genre’s ascendance by the end of the Seventies was complete. It was also, then, a prime target for takedown.
These currents were all swirling in the air around the nighttime double header in mid-July, a showdown between the last-in-league Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers. Veeck simply thought Disco Demolition Night would draw several thousand more fans during a losing season.
Dahl wore a combat helmet and fatigues to the park. His anti-disco army turned out en masse, drinking and growing increasingly rowdy as the innings went on. By the time Dahl rode out onto the field in a military Jeep after the first game, nearly 50,000 spectators were crammed into the park; an additional 10,000-plus were outside.
For reduced-price tickets to the park that night, many attendees brought records to be destroyed; all of the sacrificial vinyl filled a bin that was set down, ceremonially, in the middle of the field. Dahl got the crowd chanting “Disco Sucks,” a message matched by homemade banners hung from the stadium’s upper deck. “They’re not gonna shove it down our throats,” he yelled into a microphone. “We rock ‘n’ rollers will resist—and we will triumph!” The records were detonated, tearing a crater into the midfield sod. “That blowed up real good,” Dahl crowed, echoing the signature line that accompanied his on-air disco “explosions.” Triumphant, he got back in the Jeep and rode off the field—along with many of the ballpark security staff. That was when the true mayhem broke out.
Tumblr media
People started streaming onto the green by the thousands. They stole bases and tipped over a batting cage; they ripped up turf. They rushed both bullpens and began burning signs. Fights broke out. Veteran White Sox announcer Harry Caray tried to shift the tone by singing ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame’ over the PA system. No one listened. A message on the scoreboard—PLEASE RETURN TO YOUR SEATS—pleaded, futilely, with the attendees still stoking fires. White Sox announcer Jimmy Piersall opined, “I hope they don’t let you people see what’s going on here at Comiskey Park; one of the saddest sights I’ve ever seen in a ballpark in my life.” Eventually the Chicago riot police arrived, some on horseback, and cleared the field.
Later, after the smoke cleared, and critics and commentators began evaluating the event, many would describe Disco Demolition as an opening salvo in the culture wars. What role racism and homophobia played in Dahl and his groupies’ rebellion remained up for debate. Even from today’s vantage point, a definitive interpretation of Disco Demolition is still murky. “If we seek a true memory,” Green said, “this is the meaning of the backlash against disco, then we're probably going to find ourselves in a situation where we never settle the argument. And I think that that’s the way of all major cultural transformations.”

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion - Harvard's Claudine Gay cited 'racial animus' in her resignation letter
In Claudine Gay’s resignation letter on Tuesday, Harvard University’s first Black — and now former — president cited the fear of being “subjected to personal attacks and threats fueled by racial animus” while battling allegations of plagiarism and her congressional hearing comments related to the Israel-Hamas war. But Gay and DEI — or diversity, equity and inclusion — experts point out that racial animus was not the only driving factor that led to her resignation.
“She was targeted partially due to her race, but as part of the larger, extremist, right-wing push to reverse social progress under this banner of anti-wokeness,” Lily Zheng, a DEI strategist and best-selling author of DEI Deconstructed, told Yahoo News.
Here’s what racial animus means and how it fuels the resistance to diversity, equity and inclusion in academic and corporate spaces.
What is racial animus?
Zheng defined racial animus, in plain terms, as “racial hostility.”
“She is talking about having a target on her back for being a Black woman, the first in Harvard's history. That's essentially what I am reading, when I see her words, ‘racial animus,’” Zheng said.
A day after stepping down, Gay penned an op-ed in the New York Times in which she said she was “called the N-word more times than I care to count,” in her short six months at Harvard.
“It is not lost on me that I make an ideal canvas for projecting every anxiety about the generational and demographic changes unfolding on American campuses: a Black woman selected to lead a storied institution,” Gay wrote.
Racial animus is fueling resistance to DEI
Civil rights activist the Rev. Al Sharpton said on Tuesday that the resignation of Harvard’s first Black president (she’s also only the second woman to hold the position) was “an assault on the health, strength and future of diversity, equity and inclusion.”
Gay also shared her views on diversity, calling it a “source of institutional strength and dynamism,” and said she advocates for a “modern curriculum.”
But as the academic world and corporations moved to create or enhance DEI initiatives in the wake of the May 2020 murder of George Floyd, conservative leaders in the U.S. have attacked such initiatives as “tactics of liberal elites who suppress free thought in the name of identity politics and indoctrination.”
“Understanding our current racial landscape as a zero-sum game, where only one group of people can ‘win’ is at the heart of a lot of the current anti-wokeness, anti-DEI movement," said Zheng.
In her op-ed, Gay spoke of the conservative campaigns that “often trafficked in lies” to oust her and “often start with attacks on education and expertise.”
“They recycled tired racial stereotypes about Black talent and temperament,” Gay wrote.
In an email to Yahoo News, Christopher Rufo, a conservative activist who has taken credit for leading a conservative campaign to push Gay to resign, compared Gay’s “racism” to that of her critics.
“Evidence that Gay is racist: she oversaw a discriminatory admissions program ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court; led a discriminatory DEI bureaucracy that sought, among other things, to reduce the visual presence of ‘white men’ on campus; minimized antisemitism and the call for the violent ‘decolonization’ of Jews; supported policies that reduce individuals to racial categories and judge them on the basis of ancestry, rather than individual merit. Evidence that Claudine Gay's critics are racist: Claudine Gay claiming, but providing no hard evidence, that some unknown person or persons sent her mean emails,” Rufo wrote.
“It is a shame that some people appear to be using the tragedy playing out in the Middle East to further their agenda around attacking what they see as a too-liberal institution of higher education,” Sarah Soule, a professor who teaches organizational behavior at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, told Yahoo News. “If such attacks on higher education hadn't been playing out in other places in recent years, such as in Hungary, it might seem surprising. But it is just plain terrifying.”
‘Extremely strong desire’ for social progress
Zheng says that DEI efforts have historically been about “eliminating discrimination, creating fairness” and building organizations and universities that work for everyone.
“There are articles from Harvard themselves essentially admitting to, in the past and in the present, the social networks of these kinds of prestigious universities have been typically rich white men, building social, political and financial connections with other rich white men that weaves the fabric of America's political and corporate landscape for decades to come.”
Zheng added that this model of Ivy League institutions needs to change.
While Gay’s resignation, political efforts to ban DEI initiatives and the Supreme Court striking down affirmative action have been “disheartening,” according to Zheng, the decisions have not deterred people’s attitudes toward social progress. Zheng said DEI continues to be an “extremely strong desire” for working Americans and students pursuing higher education.
“There’s value for DEI for institutions at Harvard, institutions that have in the past, and in the present, continue to be bastions of this ‘old boys club,’ this kind of informal network that is fundamentally anti-meritocratic, and is about people from one set of social groups helping others from the same social group,” Zheng affirmed.
“We need to build institutions that actually work for everyone, that support everyone, that give everyone a fair shot for success that open up the doors of opportunity for everyone.”

What's interesting is they're largely deleting a keystone trait of "westerners" in world history — the very same trait which otherized Jews living in Europe.
Because "Westerner" largely means Christian, and then also mostly white and mostly European in origin. The east/west divide pretty explicitly comes as a division between Christianity and Islam, with the "South East" being Hinduism, and "Far East" being like, Buddhism, Shintoism, Confucianism, Daoism, and so on.
No one says "Western religion" when they're referring to native american religious beliefs, because indigenous people were not included as full members in "The Western World," or even considered as founding groups of "The West." Because it has absolutely nothing to do with geography. So Christian Europeans treated native Americans as being in the dominion of "The West" and therefore "theirs" to subjugate, rule, and convert. But they never allowed native western peoples to define "Western."
Ironically (or amusingly?) enough it's like....maybe read famous Palestinian author, Edward Said's book called Orientalism?
Because his book elaborates on this quite a bit (there's even a moment where, quoting someone else, he discusses the notion that Arabs are ultimately "Jews on horseback.") the external, Christian view of Jew vs Arab-Muslim is explored extensively. And both Jew and Arab-Muslim are, in Said's words, Oriental, which is forcibly frozen in time. It's precisely that being a Zionist gets treated as "modern" and not "uncivilized" that people call Israelis westerners and Israel "the west," despite the fact that Jews themselves remain "Oriental."
Tumblr media
[Edward William] Lane's ability to deal with the Egyptians as present beings and as validations of sui generis labels was a function both of Orientalist discipline and of generally held views about the Near Oriental Muslim or Semite. In no people more than in the Oriental Semites was it possible to see the present and the origin together. The Jews and the Muslims, as subjects of Orientalist study, were readily understandable in view of their primitive origins: this was (and to a certain extent still is) the cornerstone of modern Orientalism.
Renan had called the Semites an instance of arrested development, and functionally speaking this came to mean that for the Orientalist no modern Semite, however much he may have believed himself to be modern, could ever outdistance the organizing claims on him of his origins. This functional rule worked on the temporal and spatial levels together. No Semite advanced in time beyond the development of a "classical" period; no Semite could ever shake loose the pastoral, desert environment of his tent and tribe. Every manifestation of actual "Semitic" life could be, and ought to be, referred back to the primitive explanatory category of "the Semitic."
I'd also suggest his coverage of Israeli-Zionist vs Jewish person illuminates a way more complicated view of whether or not Jews are westerners or "Oriental". He paints a picture of caricaturized images, stereotypes which cast upon Jews and Arabs have harmed both (by way of outside occidental views shaping and changing interior perceptions, and leveraging antisemitism as a wedge, and trying to create a westernized Israel, while continuing to cast Jews as inherently oriental):
Yet after the 1973 war the Arab appeared everywhere as something more menacing. Cartoons depicting an Arab sheik standing behind a gasoline pump turned up consistently. These Arabs, however, were clearly "Semitic": their sharply hooked noses, the evil mustachioed leer on their faces, were obvious reminders (to a largely non-Semitic population) that "Semites" were at the bottom of all "our" troubles, which in this case was principally a gasoline shortage. The transference of a popular anti-Semitic animus from a Jewish to an Arab target was made smoothly, since the figure was essentially the same.
Thus if the Arab occupies space enough for attention, it is as a negative value. He is seen as the disrupter of Israel's and the West's existence, or in another view of the same thing, as a surmountable obstacle to Israel's creation in 1948. Insofar as this Arab has any history, it is part of the history given him (or taken from him: the difference is slight) by the Orientallst tradition, and later, the Zionist tradition. Palestine was seen-by Lamartine and the early Zionists -as an empty desert waiting to burst into bloom; such inhabitants as it had were supposed to be inconsequential nomads possessing no real claim on the land and therefore no cultural or national reality. Thus the Arab is conceived of now as a shadow that dogs the Jew.
In that shadow — because Arabs and Jews are Oriental — Semites can be placed whatever traditional, latent mistrust a Westerner feels towards the Oriental. For the Jew of pre-Nazi Europe has bifurcated: what we have now is a Jewish hero, constructed out of a reconstructed cult of the adventurer-pioneer-Orientalist (Burlon, Lane, Renan), and his creeping, mysteriously fearsome shadow, the Arab Oriental.
While he supposes Zionists may take on orientalist ideologies towards Arabs, he also indicates this remains a hierarchy within the occident. Jews, even the orientalizing ones, are still ultimately Oriental in the eyes of western Christians. At best, they're serving western interests or treated as being "under western domain", and temporarily a countermeasure to the "other" orientals, but because they're Oriental, they are still not Westerners.
The division he is discussing is still a constructed view from the occident — that is, western Christians.
Now I don't think I fully agree that "The Jew" (archetypal, orientalist) split after WWII into "orientalist-zionist-adventurer" and "The Arab shadow" completely, and I think this misplaces the timeline, some of the ideologies, etc, but like...at every turn, Said is saying that The Jew and The Arab are both Semites, that is, conceived of as Orientals and not Westerners.
If Zionism is also casting orientalist conceptions (and thus shaped by occidental ideology) towards other semites, that's an internalized issue resulting from the influence of western orientalism, but not guaranteed membership to the occident. (Similar: if someone is a POC, and colorist to someone darker skinned and the same race as them, that doesn't make them white. It makes them colorist. Merely adopting or internalizing negative ideologies wielded against you doesn't actually grant unquestioning belonging to the groups who first used it to subjugate you, and who will use it again if you don't serve their purpose.)

israelis are absolutely not westerners lol this is just rootless cosmopolitan rhetoric taken right from stalin. are you proud yet?

So with Run It Again’s latest chapter there was a bit that had Abu’l basically haunting Kadar, and I feel I need to expand upon an explanation for why I went this direction and how in a way it could be canon.
First things first my realization comes from Unity and Arno. In Unity it is made very clear that Arno’s particular brand of Isu Fuckery is actually legitimately happening and not a unique story disambiguation for the player—which does in fact change a great deal.
The thing with Assassin’s Creed is that it has to play a line between gameplay and story, and allow for the ways that gameplay elements equate to story elements. In this I mean that we as a player see things in a 3rd person perspective, but to the characters Desmond’s experience in the animus is more akin to VR, so it would be in a first person perspective instead of this over the shoulder view.
This means things we see Desmond technically might not in the Animus (barring the fact that Isu Fuckery is a thing). This also means that Ubisoft has to take some story liberties to get across the full breadth of what happens. This has resulted in what we’ve called the Animus White Space – those post assassination conversations. Plenty of headcanon derives that these conversations actually happen before the kill, or in the moment of the kill, and this makes some form of sense.
The Animus from the way Desmond, Rebecca, and Shaun of talked about it works very much like a VR game, only it pulls from genetic memories to fill in the gaps between intense moments that are inscribed in Desmond’s DNA. This means to form the world it comes from a mesh of many memories, NPCs are built because these places are supposed to be crowded, but specifics are left just off the edge for the mind to fill in. This means that aside from specific cutscenes we can take things as not necessarily a specific memory, but more the mesh of multiple things over time – every memory of travel, interaction with a salesman, all kind of blurred together to create this background gameplay that Desmond is able to essentially crawl around in. The specifics of memory itself work as cutscenes – except then there is that weird White Space memories that don’t quite fit.
Of course these could be weird Animus glitches because these White Space memories are often wrapped up in the act of killing, which could have its own consequences on the Assassin that Desmond is living in the memories of. To make that conscious choice to kill – we don’t know what it could have done to the memory recorded in Desmond’s DNA.
Arno changed this. Arno revealed that he essentially sees the memories of his victims. He pulls them out of their minds in that moment of death. Combine that with Bayeks “white space” moments and it paints a rather clear picture – these events happen, but they don’t happen in reality they happen in memory – in the mind. These events are basically the Assassin grasping that soul as it leaves the body for one last conversation, questions to be answered, things they don’t necessarily derive.
I’ve talked about on the comments of my fic that I plant to compile here how Isu Seventh Sense interacts with Human Sixth Sense and what that specifically means and how it sort of changes things, how it explains Eagle Vision etc. Essentially every Isu descended human has the Human Sixth and Isu Seventh sense meshed together in some form, and the Human Sixth sense often has ties into paranormal events including spirits, souls, and ghosts.
To this end I decided in Run It Again that anyone with a significant portion of Isu DNA can essentially grasp a soul in that moment of death. Altair does this to ask his final questions, and it is not questioned that he talks to his victims. Al Mualim does not even find this odd except in how it changes Altair’s perspective…so to Kadar – Kadar, and by extension Malik’s, Isu DNA is lesser than say Altair, but that does not mean they do not have their own gifts. Malik has seen the specters of his victims before, but he has fortitude of mind and he’s somewhat religious incidentally and so he ignores them. He pushes them away and does not interact – often he chalks it up to potential Djinn trying to trick him.
Altair converses with them, clearly.
Kadar…Kadar does not have the fortitude to stop them, to grab them and converse – he wasn’t even prepared for the possibility. Instead the ghosts grab Kadar, they cling to him and dig into him where Altair digs into them – it is a foil to Altair’s ability in a way. They reveal things, but they reveal things in the way they take and it leaves Kadar…well. Kind of concussed.
Malik never prepared Kadar for it because Malik himself doesn’t realize what is happening, and Altair never prepared Kadar for it because Altair has always thought himself the only one ‘gifted’ and is completely ignorant of the other ways several of his Brothers are actually gifted as well, including Malik and Kadar. He knows they are talented for sure, but he hasn’t put together that technically they are talented/gifted in a way above base human since most of the Brothers are, in some way, above base human. The few who aren’t very rarely end up as Field Assassins.

hoodie>arent ‘punishment’ and ‘fair negative consequences for your actions’ pretty much the same thing?
All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.
Punishment can be unfair and onerous. Especially is someone's so quick to punish that they hurt an entirely innocent person.
Which happens a lot!
someone white getting fired for calling his black coworker the n-word is, by the dictionary definition of punishment, being punished.
Of the top of my head, it could be possible that the black co-worker actually approves, or it's a personal joke between them that someone else reported, or the white guy was quoting what an actual racist said to them, or that wasn't even the actual word he used.
Tumblr media
Also, a lot of the people who really want to punish others don't want to go through a process, with checks and balances and accountability. They want to yell at a stranger on the internet because that stranger supposedly did a bad thing.
And very often, that stranger's family.
And employer.
sparx>and that's what "don't trust people who want to punish" is getting at, because the urge to punish is often really strong - especially in christian, especially evangelical christian, spaces, where there's this internalised "if you sin you go to hell" logic.
I can think of multiple people who online left-wing mobs went after in recent memory. High-profile examples too.
You seem to be thinking "Okay, this might be a problem, but no one on MY side does it".
"well it's okay to do X to Y group" (e.g. it's okay to remove voting rights from felons) - you are then motivated to turn anyone you want to do X to into a member of Y group (e.g. mass criminalisation (felonisation?) of black people via racially-selective policing and lawmaking).
Agree with your point, dispute your examples.
You don't need active malice or racism for that. You just need cops focusing on areas where more crime happens.
Which is disproportionately…black neighbourhoods.
And most violent crime is intra-racial, IIRC.
You could easily end up with the exact same results without any racial animus at all.
Also, there are a lot of black neighbourhoods in America right now complaining about high-crime rates and lack of policing.
tributary >to add on to d) “what about punching literal nazis”, very few people who posture about that will show me their knuckles.
I keep asking those people what happens if they punch innocent people by mistake, and their response is always either "shut up, you're enabling Nazis", or "well, it's their own fault for being close enough to a Nazi for people to mistake them".
Even if the person is question is at best highly unlikely to be a Nazi. As in "in multiple minority groups, and also is explicitly against them".
Heck, there's one particular minority individual who "hangs out" with (remarkably diverse) supposed Nazis, probably because they're less likely to attack him on sight than the Nazi-punchers.
daily reminder to distrust those in whom the urge to punish is strong

A DEEPER LOOK;
BACKGROUND: Percy De Rolo was born the third child of seven children in the prominent De Rolo family of Whitestone.  With no possibility in his eyes of receiving a lordship.  He turned his studies to innovation and engineering.   His genius level intellect lead to his aspirations of renovating and revolutionizing his own home state.  A desire he would never see fulfilled.  One night his family hosted a traveling noble family.  The Briarwoods.  A seemingly normal couple that would devastate his family.  A usurpation.  Old Allies of his family had betrayed them and in one foul swoop they laid dead at his feet.  The torment he endured turned his hair pale white from fear.   One night he managed to escape, freeing his last remaining relative his younger sister and fleeing into the night.  Chased by the betrayers, Percy was helpless to watch as his sister was impaled with multiple arrows.  Seemingly dead.  He made it to the river at the end of his family’s property when he jumped into the cold embrace of the water. He could not tell you what transpired in the years following his escape until the dream happened.  A roaring cloud of smoke offered him vengeance and he awoke with a design in his mind.  Soon after Percy created his first gun.  The first of its kind in his world.   He would later join up with an adventuring party named Vox Machina.  A team that helped heal his broken soul, a group that would venture into his old home and help him reclaim it from the clutches of the very people who destroyed everything he once loved.  Monsters he would never stop fearing as they seemingly defied death time and time again.   Vox Machina saved his soul.

THE QUESTIONNAIRE;
HOW DOES YOUR CHARACTER FEEL ABOUT BEING DROPPED INTO THE CAMBRIA PROGRAM? ARE THEY EXCITED? SUSPICIOUS? CONFUSED? : Confused.  Space travel was never a thing he could comprehend let alone imagine.
WHAT DOES YOUR CHARACTER HOPE TO SEE THE MOST DURING THE CAMBRIA ONE’S JOURNEY?  : Honestly just being here is a whole new lifetime of adventure for Percy.
IF YOUR CHARACTER COULD BRING ONE THING OR PERSON FROM HOME, WHAT WOULD IT BE? : His sister.  He spent enough time away from her.

Hello dear angle. I'm back with an ask that idk if it's wierd or not. Actaully I'm trying to start a fanfic about a civilizade xenomorph society and I'm turing everthing I like to these cute little parasites. So… I wanted to ask what do you think about an android Desmond with his three white xenomorph ancestors? I've read several comics and novels of alien and what I discovered was that xenomorphs were created to be a biological weapon. So I was thinking what if Desmond android was created by abstergo to controll the xenemorphs. He is like a queen to them because of the DNA they share. In this au the assassin-templair war is not still over. And even in the sky they are trying to take cotroll over the galaxy. What if Desmond works in one of abstergo's labs. Until he saw a xenomorph for the first time in his life. It was pure white with a strange looking mark on its forhead. Some thing about this mark was familiar to him which he didn't know why. The first time he saw it he felt a strong bond between them. He felt so safe around that monster. It felt like family. Like home. He put his hand on the glass. The creature came closer with curiosity and placed its hand where was desmond's. And suddenly something flashed before Desmond's eyes. A face. A man with white cloak that was standing there and staring at him in a kind smile. And then he was in the lab again. He stared at the monster and smiled. "Ezio. So it's your name."
I will leave it from here for you. I belive in you. You can turn this to a movie that worths watching. And mabey it's ezides? I love ezides fanfics and i don't know why. They're kinda apposite but still cute. Your blog is wonderful 🤩
(Thank you! While I cannot promise I can make this a movie worth watching, I will do my best to make this something monster fuckers would at the very least be curious about XD)
It’s not weird. I mean, I’m fine with weird ideas XD
Also, Alien is one of my favorite horror movies.
For this one, what if we just throw away Alien/Prometheus canon and spin this into another AU (mainly because this gives us an excuse to not use the canon explanation of white xenomorphs and the proto xenomorphs.
For this one, let’s set up Abstergo as being sorta in a decline after humanity decided to live among the stars. While they had been focused on profiting and trying to eradicate the Brotherhood, Weyland-Yutani slips pass them and became the juggernaut corporation that more or less controlled human settlements.
DESMOND was meant to be the prototype of an android line that should have exceeded everything Weyland-Yutani approved androids could.
But there were a bit of problem with DESMOND. For one, he appeared too cold, less expressive than the cheapest android and has a hard time understanding orders.
It was a failure.
So Abstergo had to pivot and create a new product. They manage to get samples of Weyland-Yutani’s ‘prized’ secret project and a basic ‘overview’ of what it’s meant to be.
Unfortunately, the samples didn’t have enough genetic information to complete their version and they thought, “Hey, you know what we have? The DNA sample of some dude that died during the 21st century! That might work!”
In their defense, the lead of the project, Dr. Vidic (relation to the late Warren Vidic is unknown), believed in this ‘rumor’ that Sample 17 is the golden ticket to Abstergo’s success. It was the key to the success of the Animus Project. Why not this project as well?
If the human DNA is unusable for this project, Sample 17’s Isu DNA might be what they needed.
For this one, they made three Prototypes to use for different ‘experiments’.
They were called Zero-One, Zero-Two and Zero-Three.
Zero-One is taken to the deepest part of the space station to be experimented on.
Zero-Two is kept in one of the more secured floors to be observed with limited ‘contact’.
Zero-Three is kept on stasis while Zero-One and Zero-Two are being ‘observed’. Once the observation period is over, Zero-Three will be eliminated and dissected to gather more data using what data they gathered from Zero-One and Zero-Two.
DESMOND has been turned into a messenger android, delivering devices and other items and acting similar to someone who takes picture of the person who took a package.
It was one of the few things it could do without having to be supervised the entire time.
It is during one of its delivery to Dr. Vidic that it sees Zero-Two.
There was something about Zero-Two that makes it feel something.
Makes him feel something.
Their first meeting ends with him calling Zero-Two ‘Ezio’.
His Ezio.
DESMOND starts visiting him whenever he has the chance.
And Abstergo sees this all.
Hard not to considering the floor Ezio is in is covered in surveillance tech.
Dr. Vidic thinks this is a good thing.
DESMOND can communicate with Zero-Two. With enough time, DESMOND can be used to control Zero-Two.
No.
Control an army of them.
So he takes DESMOND under his wing and starts to supervise the meetings.
The tried and true method of carrot-and-stick.
With DESMOND being the carrot.
During that time, the team in charge of experimenting of Zero-One fuck up big time.
Maybe they didn’t take in consideration the idea that Zero-One would use its acid blood to destroy its cage.
Maybe they underestimated Zero-One’s intellect and it manages to get them to open the cage by pretending to be sick or dead.
Whatever the reason will be, the end result is the same.
Zero-One kills the team that has been experimenting on it and starts to hunt down everyone in the Space Station.
During this time, Dr Vidic gets the idea of hunting Zero-One using Zero-Two.
And he does it by having DESMOND become bait because he knows Zero-Two will protect DESMOND.
He didn’t take in consideration that DESMOND’s connection might not be exclusive to Zero-Two alone.
So when DESMOND sees Zero-One, he sees him about to kill another Abstergo personnel. The personnel begged for help but DESMOND simply stood there.
Dr. Vidic thought (as he watched the feeds from a drone) that DESMOND is doing as ordered, to find Zero-One and to place himself in danger until Zero-Two gets to his position (Zero-Two has been fashioned with a device that would push a strong sedative inside him in a push of a button, deliberately placed in a part of his body that he cannot use his acid blood to dissolve it)
Zero-One kills the personnel and starts moving to DESMOND’s position on all fours. A predator slowly making its way to its next kill.
That’s when Dr. Vidic sees DESMOND take a step towards Zero-One and reach a hand.
Without any mirror, DESMOND touches Zero-One as he says, “Altaïr?”
“You want to kill them all? Okay.”
“… We can do that.”
.
Unorganized Notes:
They take Ratonhnhaké:ton out of stasis during Altaïr’s rampage and DESMOND stays with him because he hasn’t gotten used to moving yet and is the most vulnerable of the three.
Considering it’s me, I would suggest we just turn this into all three main couples (AltDes, EziDes, ConDes) for triple the ‘fun’.
They feel a connection to DESMOND because he is created to be a complete copy of Sample 17 with an android body. Technically, his ‘genetics’ is more or less in that ‘white fuel’ he creates himself and a bunch of 1s and 0s makes up Sample 17’s entire DNA.
In a more… ‘strange’ level, they feel a connection to DESMOND and DESMOND feels a connection with them because they’re the closest species to one another. Both created from Sample 17.
If you want smut in this one, well, they see DESMOND as their Queen and they have the instinct to mate with their Queen because Sample 17’s genetic code had a hardwired ‘order’ of needing to reproduce sexually. (to create Desmond Miles but the order is still there). Otherwise, they feel the need to protect DESMOND and to satisfy his every desire.
The xenomorphs take one more and more characteristics of the ‘target’ ancestor in terms of personality and habits. On the flipside, DESMOND starts acting more… ‘selfish’ the longer he stays with the three.
This would end with the space station succumbing to the xenomorphs but Dr. Vidic manages to send out an SOS before he dies.
This is the part where we can focus on developing DESMOND’s relationship with the xenomorphs (insert smut here if you want).
Then… an Abstergo rescue ship is pinged on the radar and… more cannon fodders as well as the possibility of finally leaving the space station.
The twist is there’s an Assassin aboard the rescue ship and this Assassin would get in contact with DESMOND and realize who he is based on because the Brotherhood never forgot Desmond Miles. (this gives us the chance to make this either (1) DESMOND and the xenomorphs joining the Brotherhood for a sorta morally gray good guys scenario or (2) they kill the Assassin and go on full on corrupted “the world against us” setup)

Philosophies which I like
Plato’s Allegory of the Cave
This is a beautiful idea. There is a dark cave and in it are blind men; there is a bright light emanating from the outside and the men are groping for light. What Plato meant was beside the world of the senses there is an ideal world of forms.
Hegel’s idea of Thesis Anti-thesis and Synthesis
Hegel has said that in every philosophical proposition there is a Thesis, an antithesis and synthesis. Let me illustrate this by an example. The harsh treaty of Versailles imposed on Germany is a thesis. The rise of Hitlerian dictatorship became the result and it is an anti-thesis. The outbreak of World War II can be considered as the synthesis. I would like to show another example. The capture of India by the British invoked a colonial rule and that’s a thesis. The coming of Mahatma Gandhi as freedom struggle Messiah is an ant—thesis. The liberation of India from British yoke is a synthesis.
The Signifier and the Signified by Roland Barthes
Roland Barthes is famous as a post-structuralist philosopher. He has introduced to Philosophy, the concept of the signifier and the signified. The signifier is a visual idea and the signifier is an abstract idea. For example, if I say Dove is peace, Dove becomes the signifier and peace becomes the signified. If I say God is Truth, God becomes the signifier and Truth becomes the signified. If I say, rose is passion, rose becomes the signifier and passion becomes the signified.
Derrida’s Deconstruction
The Philosopher Derrida introduced deconstruction to the realm of Philosophy. Deconstruction as an idea means, texts privilege some and marginalize others. Deconstruction aims at a critical reading of texts. Let us take an example from Apartheid. Apartheid in the textual realm privileged the Whites and marginalized the blacks. From deconstruction, I have developed the idea of binary fusion. Binary fusion is s state in Philosophy where texts neither privilege nor marginalize anyone. Let’s take an example from Blues Music. Blues music has emerged from Black culture and it has become a universal legacy. Blues music as a text neither privileges nor marginalizes anyone. Another example would be Jazz, a musical style developed by the Blacks which has won worldly acclamation. Another example can be taken from History and History can be made into binary fused text as Her-story.
The Philosophy of Existentialism
Existential heavy weights are Sartre and Camus. Sartre’s existential philosophy is one of angst and it says: existence precedes essence. However, I would love to intrude into Sartre’s space and rephrase existential philosophy as the celebration of life. Camus’s existential philosophy compares the state of man to that of the mythical creature Sisyphus. Sisyphus is a Greek Tragic hero who is forced to roll a boulder only to find to his shock that it rolls down again. Sisyphus is forced to repeat this meaningless and monotonous chore. I would like to reword Camus philosophy by saying existences is the preciousness of life. Existence is the celebration of life. Meaning of life as a process undergoes Cathartic affirmation and negation. Existence in life can be made positive by making creative choices. Existence is the celebration of both angst and joy.
Julia Kristeva’s Semiotic and Symbolic Texts
Julia Kristeva has introduced the philosophical concepts of Semiotic and the Symbolic. A semiotic text is the one which is non-grammatical and avoids punctuation. Semiotic texts are prevalent in dance, music and also streams of consciousness narratives. A symbolic text adheres to the rules of grammar and flows as a linear patter. Examples of symbolic texts come from legal and medicinal texts.
Freudian Id, Ego and Super Ego
Freud has contributed the ideas of Id, Ego and Super Ego to literature and Philosophy. Id is the primary seat of passions. Ego is the language, culture and traditions imbibed from society. The super-ego is the laws of the society. A creative intellectual is the one who deifies the ID, glorifies the Ego and subverts the super-ego.
Ideas from Jung
Jung is an interesting psychoanalyst who has introduced the ideas of Animus and the Anima and the idea of archetypes.  Animus is the feminine side of masculine personality and the anima is the masculine side of feminine personality. Archetypes are universal symbols of the collective unconscious and they can be historical stereotypes like the father figure, the mother figure, the wizard and the witch. They can also be abstract geometric patters like drawing of the Mandala.

Miraculous Tarot – XIV: Temperance
For those not yet following this series, I’m designing and drawing / painting a Miraculous tarot deck – all 78 cards. You can read about my approach to tarot in a previous post, but briefly: I don’t use the cards to ‘tell the future’ – I see symbolic imagery as a tool to help us pinpoint the answers that are already within us.
This time, the card is Temperance – a little bit lighter than the previous card (Death). Without further ado, here’s my painting!
Tumblr media
The traditional Rider-Waite-Smith image has an androgynous angel dressed in a blue and white gown (water), with huge read wings like in The Lovers, holding two cups and pouring water from one into the other. (I used to think this was impossible, but then I saw videos of Thai tea making – seriously, look it up.)
We can see this as mixing the two aspects shown by Adam and Eve in The Lovers card – a harmonious blend of the anima and animus / conscious and unconscious / rationale and spiritual.
Tumblr media
In fact, everything in this card speaks of balance, steadiness, moderation, and tempering ourselves. This isn’t the same as repression; it’s about embodying that liminal space. It is the threshold to the next 7 cards, which are the most mystical part of this journey.
For my painting, I started with the yin-yang place setting for the ladybug and black cat miraculous, in the miracle box. I then put Ladybug and Cat Noir on each other’s spot, to show how they balance each other out. I previously drew this with coloured pencil, last year, but then redid it digitally. The first version had more predominant black and red halves to the yin-yang. I ended up with quite a lot more red in the updated version, simply because I thought it looked good. I also went heavy on the fire colours, despite the traditional image being so watery. Oh well…that’s obviously what speaks to me! I think it still gets the ideas across.
Next time, The Devil, another one of those cards that can put people off. There really could be only one image for it – stay tuned for that!
