Watching ROTK for Downfall of Sauron Day and once again I have chosen the Extended Edition. And, look. I know they couldn’t include everything and it’s nearly 4.5 hours long already. But the Scouring of the Shire is SO IMPORTANT to Tolkien’s themes and especially to Pippin’s and Merry’s character development. And I really don’t think the confrontation between Theoden and Saruman is adapted very well *anyway*, and to just… stick the deaths of Saruman and Wormtongue on at the end? So the hobbits don’t get the victory? No!
#I love the scouring of the shire#it’s up there with A Conspiracy Unmasked for me#and it goes along with the films pretty much jettisoning Merry and Pippin as anything but comic relief of course#but that’s probably my least favourite change the films made#justice for merry#oh and I don’t like Aragorn leading Éowyn on which i think he kind of does in the films#and very clearly does NOT in the books#there is a lot I love about the films#Gandalf is perfect#Frodo and Sam are very good#there are many things I love honestly#I like the films a lot! as long as I remember they are about different characters from the books#lotr

listen there really was just something about how in the book, snow’s 3-page descent from hesitant lover boy to deluded mfer happens entirely in his mind. lucy gray gives him no indication whatsoever that she suspects him, that she’s going to leave or betray him. he’s just sitting quietly in the cabin waiting for her to return when that seed of calculated suspicion, which he has needed to survive the capitol, takes a hold of him and chokes the life out of any goodness left inside him. it really drives home your terror as a reader that “oh my god did he kill her? did she escape? what happened to her? why would he even think that?” in a way that when the movie had to adjust for visualization it lost some of that holy shit this guy has lost it emphasis.
#seeing some discourse and im not saying lucy grey didnt know#im saying she never dropped the kind of hints that she knew like she did in the movie#or if she did snow isnt worried about them until he very suddenly is consumed by them#snow is not concerned about whether or not she believed him. of course she did! hes snow!#but then shes gone…. for a while……#and its the sudden immediate drastic unravelling that comes across so clearly in the book#that i knew wouldn’t translate to screen yet still cant help but miss#the hunger games#coriolanus snow#tbosas#lucy gray baird#not a crime or anything just a note that i cannot stop thinking about#the ballad of songbirds and snakes#this is all from memory of reading it quite a while ago. so maybe 3 pages is an exaggeration#but i remember it happening VERY quickly and without much external cause#like we as the reader have no indication as to whether shes nearby or not.#snow has no idea either. he just SUSPECTS. and his suspicion breeds the hatred that has been bubbling inside him all this time#he hates how she undoes him. he hates that he WOULD run away with her if shed let him keep his secrets#and he HATES more than anything that she makes him WANT to tell his secrets#he wants to be vulnerable and reveal the ugly nasty parts about himself and still be loved#but he does not let himself and it is everyone’s downfall#he chooses cruelty bc it is easy and familiar and makes him feel more powerful than the vulnerable give and take that real love requires

Hi it's just to let you know that the official romanization of Revaan's name is Raverne ! Also they have romanized Baul's name to Baur !
Twst coming back at us again with the least expected romanization! thank you everybody (oh god my inbox) (no it's great, I literally asked for this and the reactions have been INCREDIBLE, thank you all!)
I do like Raverne though, I think it's got a nice fancy sound to it! (I had kinda suspected it was going to be an R instead of an L, so the fact that it's SO close to Laverne except for that is hilarious to me personally.) and Dragoneye Duke is honestly probably the best translation for his title, I wasn't envying the localizers that one. :') Baur instead of Baul I was NOT expecting, but in retrospect I think his name's supposed to be a reference to the Bauru crocodile, so that actually makes way more sense!
someone else also said Meleanor has become Maleanor, which is the REALLY weird one to me, because I was so surprised it was written as Mel instead of Mal in the first place?! oh god no I can't decide which one I like better. 😭 (I wonder if they might change it to Mal...they have made romanization changes before) (like I remember House of Distraction being corrected to House of Destruction in Playful Land) (I did check and she's still Mel for now, but I dunno, they might Mal her up and some point and save me from having to make a decision about which one to use) (HECK I CAN'T DECIDE)
uhhhh thank you for letting me ramble about anime names, let's just say MONOGRAMMED SWEATERS FOR EVERYONE
#twisted wonderland#twisted wonderland spoilers#twisted wonderland episode 7 spoilers#twisted wonderland book 7 spoilers#twisted wonderland episode 7 part 4 spoilers#twisted wonderland book 7 part 4 spoilers#mel is so cute but mal fits with the rest of the draconias better#eng version no you were supposed to save me not make things MORE confusing#anyway raverne huh#that uh. that sure feels like it's supposed to evoke raven doesn't it.#what does it mean WHAT DOES IT MEAN#hold on i'm going to flail around embarrassingly about anime character theories now#(okay first a disclaimer: i do think we need to sit down as a fandom at some point)#(and have a discussion about exactly what is actual canon versus meta speculation versus jokes)#(because i think there has been. some confusion. over that re:crowley and raverne specifically)#(but i do feel justified in being like THEY ARE PROBABLY CONNECTED SOMEHOW RIGHT?! right now)#like i really don't think it's as simple as crowley being raverne but with memory loss or something#(and if they pull that on us i'm going to need an EXTREMELY good explanation to go with it to justify that)#they've gone out of their way several times now to make a point about them acting and sounding different and it feels very intentional to m#(and once again: i super 100% absolutely do not believe that lilia wouldn't recognize him with the top half of his face covered)#i just think the contradictions are a lot stronger than the connections right now but there ARE some connections and i'm 👀ing at them#to be fair the connections are mostly meta like crowley being diablo/raverne being evocative of raven#also the general 'raverne mysteriously disappeared and apparently had distinctive eyes' thing#versus 'crowley's past is unknown and he never shows his eyes'#(i will argue that crowley DOES seem to have some kind of canon connection to briar valley)#(since he is clearly some sort of fae and the masks are a briar valley thing)#and that is kinda it right now isn't it#okay hold on i had to delete some tags because i used too many (thanks tumblr for letting me know and not just vanishing them OH WAIT)#so tl;dr: i'm in the 'crowley is connected to raverne somehow but it's more complicated than just him being in disguise' camp personally#but that will probably change as we get more info and also don't take this as an anti-speculation thing because i love theories HOORAY

Horrible thing to say but I think there's a real chance Jiang Yanli was both of her parents' least favorite child and knew it and just kinda. Had to go on with her life knowing that.
#mdzs#jiang yanli#yunmeng siblings#madam yu's favorite kid is jc. she doesn't. um. SHOW it in a very affirming way but he's clearly the one she's emotionally most invested in#jfm's favorite kid is wwx. is he even one of his kids? doesn't matter. he's the favorite#(madam yu does NOT see wwx as her child so he doesn't factor into the calculation for her.)#i think jfm's neglect of jc is talked about. mostly because the both jc and wwx are clearly aware of it and so it's mentioned in novel#but um... DO we see either of yanli's parents give much a shit about her? ever?#jfm doesn't even ask if she WANTS her engagement dissolved before doing so#also the reason stated by other characters for jfm not liking jc is that he's madam yu's child. you know who is ALSO madam yu's child?#i think jfm may find jc.. harder to get along with. but i also think whatever discomfort from his marriage he projects onto his kids#it also extends to yanli. it's just that he's not constantly REMINDED of yanli like he is jc#(because madam yu keeps yelling about it)#and so he just... doesn't think about her much at all#madam yu meanwhile treats yanli with this air of disappointment. she seems to resent that she's 'weak' and gentle and quiet#and that she cares so little about status so as to treat wwx like her little brother#i think yanli is just fundamenally so clearly... not the child either of her parents wanted. and it shows.#i'm slightly peeved fandom doesn't talk about this as much as they talk about the effects the jiang parents had on the two boys.#but to be fair to fandom the book doesn't either#which is probaly just danmei-typical misogyny. but to give a slightly more watsonian reason#i think the yunmeng bros are genuinely unaware of this. yanli is PERFECT how could her parents not love her?#(of course they notice something like zixuan's initial dislike of her but that's blatant.)#(vs the attitude of the jiang parents towards their daughter which seems to be mostly... disinterest and disappointment)

psa that the day there are no jgy stans left on tumblr dot com is the day i am dead
but rest assured i'll go to my grave exactly as i lived: obnoxiously proclaiming to everyone within earshot how great lianfang-zun is. narratively, metaphorically, spiritually. sexually, too, like why limit myself. i like to keep my options open
#the spirit of su minshan possessed me for a minute there but like. i'm fine with it#jin guangyao#he did crimes??? good for him 😌#editing this post to add that while the tone here is clearly joking#i really am fundamentally still engaged with this fandom#and with this book#almost exlcusively because of my enjoyment of jgy#even xiyao is secondary for me like i love it and i'm ride or die for it obvs#but jgy as a character is the main draw for me. and he would have me by the throat even if there was no zewu-jun#(tho i think jgy's life would be more depressing for his absence obviously)#but he is just. /clenches my fists!!!#THE most compelling character in the story and i cannot stop thinking about him!! cannot will not!!#who else in this book has his range? who else can be the doe-eyed idealist AND the spy with blood on his hands who ends a war?#who else is two different greek tragedies and at least two separate shakespearean tragedies rolled into one antagonist#an antagonist who but for the POV of the novel could very easily have been the protagonist#whose moral event horizon is so deeply entwined with his own trauma and abuse that there is no way to meaningfully separate#the violence he does to others from the systemic violence that was done to him for his whole life?#who else in this book manages to get five separate sect leaders utterly obsessed with him no matter how you choose#to interpret that obsession?#no one!!! that's who!!#ain't no one else in the jianghu doing it like lianfang-zun and that's just a goddamn fact

"the Gabe and Sally dynamic in the show is abusive" and "the way they've portrayed Gabe in the show is distinctly different from his book counterpart and fans can criticize that" are two discussions that can coexist
#I understand that this is hard topic to navigate#but me saying that /they've changed Gabe and that's consequently altered the dynamic he has with Sally in way I don't like/#is NOT me saying I don't think what they've portrayed onscreen is non-abusive#or that I WANT to see him abuse her???#its just the guy in the show while clearly controlling and abusive (emotionally and financially so far)#...I don't believe he's the guy who's presence was so horrid and disgusting MONSTERS avoided him#I wouldn't call him /Smelly/#in the book his abuse (all forms) is much more overt#(and just to be painstakingly clear: abuse doesn't have to be overt to be abuse)#but the guy in the show does not have the same presence as the guy in the book#book Gabe is menacing#he growls and he threatens and both Sally and Percy have developed very specific responses to deal with it#I've seen one take saying that people can't recognize the abuse in the show because its not physical (yet?)#but even disregarding the physical abuse entirely#if you compare the book scene and TV show scene of Percy arriving home and he and Sally readying for Montauk#there is a pretty stark difference in tone#and in how both Sally and Percy interact with Gabe#in the book Sally goes out of her way to avoid /provoking/ Gabe and asks Percy to do the same until they can leave for Montauk#and Gabe is just itching for any excuse to keep them home#and imo if Book Sally had said the things that show Sally did to Gabe#Gabe wouldn't have let them gone!#and again im not saying that the show's depiction is nonabusive#or unrealistic#im saying its simply /different/ than the book#and im upset that it doesn't feel like dynamic depicted the book#and no book sally is no simpering wilting flower#but she's also not what they depicted in the show either#pjo adaptation#sally jackson#pjo

People are so boring about classic literature sometimes. Like I know it’s cool to be critical of men in books from the 19th century or whatever but it just leads to ripping out all of the nuance in favor of “Uh all of the Brontë men were evil and abusive and that’s all there is to those characters.” Say something interesting. I’m begging you
#yes this is about a class I’m in. what of it#There is a scene in Jane Eyre where Jane approached Rochester to ask him for leave for a few weeks to see her sick aunt#and he protests and makes a fuss out of it and he gives her a bunch of money and then takes it back and gives her less than he owes her#and if you read it in the strictest and least charitable fashion then you could say that Mr Rochester is an evil piece of shit who won’t#let Jane out of his sight and doesn’t give her what she’s due#but if you actually read it in the context of the book it’s so obvious that he’s joking around with her#and she’s ribbing him back in that same scene#because when you start out with the idea the Mr Rochester is an irredeemable monster and therefore everything he does is suspicious#you miss out on the very obvious fact that he and Jane are best friends! Their personalities gel perfectly#which is why they become so infatuated with each other#Saying ‘well Rochester didn’t give her all her money so he’s clearly manipulating and abusing Jane in this scene :(’#is such an awful boring take that ignores what Charlotte spent hundreds of pages doing with these characters!#try having reading comprehension how about that#wuthering heights#jane eyre#the tenant of wildfell hall

This Fatal Kiss
spooky whimsical YA fantasy romance
a water nymph bound to the river where she drowned desperately wants to become human again, by gaining a freely-given kiss from a mortal
a brooding boy from the local town who exorcises meddlesome spirits is constantly trying to get rid of her - but after he messes up an exorcism she blackmails him into playing matchmaker for her
….but he also has a crush on the boy she chooses (who has secrets of his own)
bisexual MCs, developing polyamorous relationship
#this fatal kiss#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#bisexual books#polyamorous books#his is so fun I enjoyed it a lot!#it’s reasonably low stakes and is cute and whimsical but with some darker elements#and some very endearing characters#There’s a few things I wanted answers about - but clearly it’s going to be a duology#so I guess I’ll have to wait. I feel like it *could* have wrapped things up as a standalone if it wanted to though#some nods to The Dark Tide too (the MC is from there)#I enjoyed all the queerness and bisexuality plus some brief interesting moments of gender thoughts even from the ostensibly cis MCs#(i say ostensibly cis - she does actually pretty explicitly say she has no feelings about gender but it's just easier to be a girl)#(also says she's love to be a big buff guy at some point. but it's not really explored)#I assume this will be a part of book 2 but uhhh I couldn’t stop thinking about alexi’s body. like. iykyk. r we gonna address that#also LOVE THE COVER

Replaying The Desert Rose and man the dynamic between Mustafa and Yasmin in the first season was everything. It's a shame how his character was ruined.

A few people in the tags on my Agatha romance plot line poll are voicing the same sorts of thoughts I had. I did not like her romance plot line because she had all these lines in the two previous books that, to me and many others, were implying her aromanticism. To have a chapter from her POV where she expresses feeling broken due to a suspected inability to feel that type of attraction only to later have this “resolved” by her finding the right person was extremely frustrating and disappointing.
Even beyond an aro reading of the character, it’s disappointing to see her coupled up at the end of the third book. So much of the first book was about subverting the expectations that come from these types of stories. One of these expectations seemed to me to be not just that the chosen one gets the perfect girl, but that all the characters are neatly coupled up by the end and have romance as a part of their story. In the first book not only is Agatha not with Simon, the chosen one, her supposed destiny, she’s not interested in coupling up and fulfilling that expectation placed on her by the world in which she lives and by the type of story she inhabits, at all. It feels like backtracking on her character growth to watch a romance play out for her in the third book.
#this is made worse to me that Penny also has a romance plot line in the final book#so we’ve gone from book one where some characters couple up#one starts and ends in a relationship that isn’t important to the story or her personal character arc#and one chooses to run off on her own#to book three where all main characters have romance arcs#not my favorite! when I loved the way the first book handled romance plot lines so much#I do think there is an argument to be made that ignoring an aromantic reading#agatha ending up with a woman does not necessarily walk back character traits and development from carry on#because she’s running away from a heteronormative world#but is too trapped within those expectations to yet realize#she may experience attraction to women instead#but 1. when she talks about wishing she had a crush on a girl because it would explain things about her#that feels pretty clearly aromantic to me#and 2. I HATE when a character feels like something is wrong with them because they aren’t falling in love#and the resolution to that conflict is them falling in love#makes my aromantic heart very angry#I don’t say any of this as a dig at people who did enjoy it . Just my thoughts on the matter#Simon says#agatha wellbelove#fine tooth comb

you know what im actually so obsessed with the jackal. We spend most of the first book hyping him up as a mysterious yet distant threat who is backed by the proctors, who cuts his own hand off without hesitation, willing to do ANYTHING just to kill Darrow, and was given his nickname because he trapped himself in a cave in HE CAUSED and then ATE THE OTHER PEOPLE HE TRAPPED IN THERE WITH HIM. and then the book ends by him getting his shit kicked in by his sister off screen.
And THEN after losing hes like oh haha let's be allies <3 and seems to Actually Care about darrow and co with no hard feelings up until he Finds Out. And even then instead of doing anything right away he waits in order to betray Darrow in the MOST FUCKED UP WAY POSSIBLE. he waits until the Big Ceremony to celebrate how cool and awesome Darrow is and has someone who Darrow cared about and trusted present the severed head of Darrow's benefactor/the learder of the big insurrectionist group and then shoots his dad in the head point blank in the ensuring chaos before torturing Darrow for like a full year presumably just for his own amusement. Like what the FUCK is wrong with this kid
#howling#red rising#like ok. the series in general but especially the first book is very clearly meant to be an alternative take on ender's game#And the Jackal is the story's equivalence to Peter with Mustang being Valentine#but i think red rising actually pulls it off better specifically because of the stretch of time where darrow and the jackal are allied#ESPECIALLY after all of the instances of darrow befriending total asshole psychopaths and they turn out chill actually#because it turns out that nurture DOES make a difference.#and then theres the jackal. the absolute worst person in existence

The past couple weeks it’s been really hitting me how much harder it’s been teaching Pride and Prejudice this year—which was so disappointing at first? Because works I’ve traditionally had a harder time with I’ve felt like i’ve broken new ground while teaching and am teaching the kids BETTER. So initially I was so frustrated that my historically easiest work to teach was feeling so difficult! But there’s been some good days that have let me see that part of what was happening was that I have simply never reached this number of kids with pride and prejudice before and so consequently I have never had so many kinds of reactions before! In the waking up from the sleep of simply never paying attention there IS going to be plenty of stupidity, contrariness, crankiness, and almost arguing? Like even with themsELVES. And that’s a good thing.
#it’s hard because I am simply very sensitive and very tired#but I know it’s so good#like I just want to reach as many of them as possible and draw them in#and sometimes the words they say—as hard to hear as it can be for me—are simply proof they are being reached#something is Happening to them#of course not all. there is the usual garden variety boredom adolescent angst and checked out-ness#but this is more than that#anywayyyy of course this is mostly about teaching teenage boys#they’re not going to show you when they’re moved. in words.#but it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening#I talked to another teacher today about it and she goes ‘I can see it happening among them too’#and it has helped! because I really was just in my head about it#first about the book itself (an insane thing but I had a bit of a wobble of just like. okay should I be teaching this)#and then about my own ability.#but it’s just that thing of leveling up.#and yeah some days it DOES make me miss the time when I and the book was sooooo under the radar that 90% of the class quietly checked out#and me and the rest of the students had an undetected fun time#I LIKE to stay in the shadows. in the peace and quiet#but clearly I am not meant to and I have a true compulsion to draw in as many people as possible#it can be scary but I know it’s good#teaching tag#ANYWAYS. thanks for listening

reading alison weir's new novel; she's adapted and altered the primary source material she's clearly using in a way that is...um. something?
#i mean it's a novel. and it is not called creative license for nothing#i also know im not the target audience and that#the vast majority of the people reading this book are not like me (insofar as i've#read what's available from the archives/state calendar papers from 1533-36...#probably. front to back altogether; chronologically; about a dozen times or so? taken detailed notes etc )#*so i doubt it's a bugbear for many; if any; other than myself#but i was very easily able to pick out the primary source quotes ; and her intent in#placing; for example; a quote from a chapuys report of 1536 in late 1533#and switching the identities of certain people (here; norfolk subbed in for shelton ) for certain incidents#so as to bolster certain theories she clearly has about certain people and their loyalties...#i mean again it's a novel but this is what she does in her nonfiction too; she just has had more liberty to do so here#and there is a reason training in history is important to being labeled 'a historian'#you are to develop your theories from the evidence. not vice versa.#(or more specifically...she does literally the opposite of what historians are trained to do. she molds the evidence to fit her theories. )#anyway. review forthcoming...maybe#i'll have to read her author's note once i'm done with this section to see if she admits to any of these specific alterations#evidence first; theory after! otherwise we end up with all these superficial renderings

Allow me to preface with: I love where OFMD ends up. Every time I see something that makes me fear for a renewal (Taika noooo), I remember that everyone was was okay where it ended, and dammit the ends justified the means
But:
Fuuuuck it's overstuffed, objectively. And my measurement of overstuffiness is: Big Musical Moments.
OFMD has these amazing sequences where the music and the action and the story all blend together in this glorious literal symphony. A normal episode has 1-2 of these sequences, and they're fucking glorious and eternal.
The finale of S2? The finale of S2 has FOUR Big Musical Moments! Five if you count Ed coming out of the water!
It's too many, it just is. There's missing links between character moments, missing plot details--it's a mess.
But I fucking love it and I'm so, so glad they rushed, because a TV season ender is a balance between the story as a whole and the investment of its watchers. Jenkins and co. decided that the investment of the watchers--and the wholeness of its charaters--was more important than the mechanics of story. And if that make you feel cheated, that's fair and that stinks. But fuck, so many stories are about the endless continuance of the characters and the ego of the creators--it's pretty damn amazing to feel like the fans (*cough* of the main arc *cough*) are valued and the creators are less important than getting to a place where it's ok to end.
The last line of this show might be "fuck that's strong!" "maybe we just air it out a bit..."
And that's actually okay. And it is, somehow, beautiful.
But goddamnit, JUST FIVE MORE MINUTES and that episode would have been PERFECT...
#this may not age well: there's now an interview with Taika where he says oh I think it's over that just came out which isn't scary at all#ofmd s2 spoilers#ofmd#our flag means death#ofmd s2#ofmd meta#random fandom crossover anyone else a Veronica Mars fan?#you wanna talk about rushed character deaths Izzy is NOTHING they clearly TRIED and CARED#Logan Echols of Veronica Mars tv show was grotesquely murdered offscreen and we immediately cut to ONE YEAR LATER#it was so underwritten that people very justifiably said "wait maybe he isn't dead because no body no funeral hey what#ofmd spoilers#ed teach#stede bonnet#blackbonnet#still legit the finale of s1 is 36 min and the finale of s2 is 29 and does MORE character work for more characters#well if wishes were horses and money grew on fucking trees#then we'd all be in hitchhiker's guide book 3

If you're saying how Penelope needs to keep Whistledown, or how her giving it up harms the story, you may not understand the character I fear.
#bridgerton#penelope featherington#like I'm sorry did we miss how all her emotions have been on the page early this season because she felt it was all she had left?#how she very clearly doesn't view this as her purpose?#how she keeps hurting people she loves and cares for and is wracked with guilt each time to fhe point of quitting at one point?#Whistledown is harmful for Penelope its *not* healthy#I've been saying for a while I few it as an allergory for addiction because of how similar the beats are#everyone talks abouthow like Portia she is in Whistledown but the nature of it is very like her father#something that hurts her and everyone around her; smething that started innocent enough and has spiraled outof control#something she wants to give up but keeps coming back to or finding reasons why she shouldn't#I'm aorry but if you think this is her purpose that this will continue to bring her joy when she could use her skills for anything else#like...idk WRITING A BOOK? Like she does in the books?#you are wearing blinder to certain aspects of her character#but fr where did this narrative that Pen gives it up and then is just a fucking housewife come from?? thats not how that goes??#who lied to you?? she still writes just something that makes her actually happy??.?
