Hi it's just to let you know that the official romanization of Revaan's name is Raverne ! Also they have romanized Baul's name to Baur !

I do like Raverne though, I think it's got a nice fancy sound to it! (I had kinda suspected it was going to be an R instead of an L, so the fact that it's SO close to Laverne except for that is hilarious to me personally.) and Dragoneye Duke is honestly probably the best translation for his title, I wasn't envying the localizers that one. :') Baur instead of Baul I was NOT expecting, but in retrospect I think his name's supposed to be a reference to the Bauru crocodile, so that actually makes way more sense!

someone else also said Meleanor has become Maleanor, which is the REALLY weird one to me, because I was so surprised it was written as Mel instead of Mal in the first place?! oh god no I can't decide which one I like better. 😭 (I wonder if they might change it to Mal...they have made romanization changes before) (like I remember House of Distraction being corrected to House of Destruction in Playful Land) (I did check and she's still Mel for now, but I dunno, they might Mal her up and some point and save me from having to make a decision about which one to use) (HECK I CAN'T DECIDE)

Question. Are you or anyone else you know working on translating some of RotM's dialogue from Japanese? I understand if that's not the case right now, but there are a lot of things in the English translation that I don't think make too much sense, weren't elaborated enough on, and/or are likely inaccurate (wouldn't be surprised, really) from the original Japanese (one of the biggest for me is when Mr. Grizz saying he needs Cuttlefish's brain and an "Earth's ambassador", what was that supposed to mean, Grizz???).

I would love to try and do this myself, but I, unfortunately, can't read Japanese nor have access to the Japanese dialogue. I know that you were one of the people responsible for the Octo Expansion Re:Translated mod, which is now my go to for characterization for Octo Expansion related things.

Sorry if this was kind of random and I understand you're busy right now (not to mention the game hasn't even been out for that long for something like this to be accomplished at this moment), but I've been curious for some time now.

@SoggiestWafflz has actually been transcribing the JP dialogue in Return of the Mammalians, and they have also retranslated some bits too, but not all. You can see it here! There aren't plans for a "ROTM Retranslated" sort of thing on my end yet since its pretty early. I did take a shot at retranslating some of the lines a few days after the game came out because i was kind of lost on those specific points. big takeaway from when i looked at the jp version was that grizz's lines are more flowery business speak. meanwhile the english version while they tried to do some of that, they just made him. lean fully into business puns even though that was never part of his previous characterization. it just feels inconsistent... *buries head in hands* For the Earth's ambassador thing... (after cuttlefish tells grizz to untie him) ENG: Ropes? Those are Corporate Engagement Facilitators. And they're helping me save the world. I simply require a representative of Earth. Like you. Don't you see? You're going to help me. JP: ワタシはこれからこの地球に生きる すべての者を救う... キミは地球の代表として、 その手伝いをしてくれたまえ From here on I will live on this Earth. And to save us all... You, as a representative of Earth, will help me do that. To me it reads a bit more clear in JP that Grizz just needed cuttlefish to help him carry out his plan to bring back mammals and not to like. literally tote him around like a representative? but like. i think the point of grizz's dialogue (this is acknowledged in the jp text too) is that it sounds kind of insane and confusing..... Now about the brain thing... ENG: Your brain...ensconced though it may be in your hideous form...contains the beautiful essence I need!

JP: 経験を積み上げた君の頭脳は美しい。そのエキスであれば申し分ない With your cumulative experience, that brain of yours is beautiful. It's extract(/essence) would be perfect."

...he's a bit more specific in JP about why he needs Cuttlefish's brain. but it's still unclear in what way exactly he needed it for to bring back mammals?? honestly this story is kind of a mess and its not just localization's fault

see, the issue doesnt lay on whether the eng translation is discourging it or not as both versions come to the same conclusion: its not incest because the two sombrons are different. Rather, the issue in terms of translation as i understand is that the eng version in its eagerness to over clarify the matter accidentally made it more confusing, thereby doing the opposite of what they intended.

I actually always rather like sombrons cobra design, it helps distinguish him among the villainous dragon designs and i think it suits his character in the manner that he's less about raw powering his way to victory and more prone to subtlety, manipulation and playing it smart [even if he is a powerhouse at the end of the day, and the writing of his plan doesnt always make sense]. in that manner hes a solid combo of medeus and gharnef which makes sense and works in his favour.

as for the other designs, nel and rafal are sombron lite designs that work for what their going for, and well i really wish we got to see more of lumineras dragon design what we do get to see is fairly standard but work well.

tikis is pretty obviously based on her warriors dragon form design but more fa'ish in the sense it looks more chickenish this time. which, i dont mind cause the chicken destroyers of worlds are adorable.

the generic enemy dragons ya come across are fine for what their suppose to be, though it does make me wish we had a manakete unit to play with in the base game. that woulda been cool.

joking aside, i imagine they went with the design less because of the biological nature of a king cobra and more so because of its cultural and symbolic significance. namely hypnotism which sombron uses rather prominently in the plot and which cobras are often connected with due to portrayals of snake charming. aside from that its also a very distinctive snake with its frill thing and a poisonous one.

idk anon, kaga if anything set the precedents for skirting around incest implications but in a very obvious way in fe that the series has dutifully followed to this day. deirdre and arvis are if anything more of an outlier being a very direct case of incest.

but speaking of fe4, i seriously doubt it'd get slapped with an m rating. putting aside the incest, well its a dark game its not any more explicit then any other fe in terms of content, and taking the incest into consideration even thats not particularly explicit in its depiction. it undeniably happens, but even then its a while into the game before its clarified that it did indeed occur and its treated with a tragic gravitas as opposed to being hyper sexualized.

You certainly can't win if ya go about things the way treehouse does. I dont doubt there would be discourse over these things mind, but ever since treehouse got involved in fe translations these matters have been particularly egregious. so i dont largely blame the fandom outside the bad actors.

I agree the internal story logic is confused anon, but i would note that a story need not necessarily be logical to work if the emotional appeal is there.

and in that regard fell xenologue is a mixed bag, admittedly in part because its internal consistency is kinda muddled. fighting the mirror royals, seeing and engaging with their personalities, the atmosphere, even the intellectual implications of the twist all work i would say [atleast for me they do]

but how we get to this points is underwritten, the twist doesnt quite work in implication because of the questions it rises, and the actual heart of the story going on there with nel and nil and rafal feels somewhat disconnected from its world and sloppily handled.

i would have been fine with a delay on the dlc if it gave em time to hammer out the finer details of the xenologue, but as it is... mixed bag.

Hi :) Have u read Volume 34's official translation? I was just reading the part where Levi's talking to his fallen comrades and sth struck me. So in the original translation he says "When you all dedicated your hearts, was it to trample on the lives of others?" And in the following he goes "No. The dream *you* all had, of a world without titans, that was an exhaustingly idealistic world"

So in the previous translation Levi apparently said "when *we* dreamed of a world without titans" and was referring to himself evidently as one of those dreamers too. So what do you think this alteration changes about *his own* ideals and goal in following the same path as his friends in the SC? What could this mean for his character when he's excluding himself of owning such ideals? We all know part of the reason Levi joined the SC - other than saving humanity - was to breathe a fresh air outside the walls. He said many times he wanted to rid the world of titans so humanity could be free but does this right here add new information to our knowledge? Sorry for the long ask and thank you in advance!

Well, we're in the same boat regarding what the new ENG translation means (I was wondering about it yesterday).

I know some other old Japanese volumes of snk had a few sentences rewritten in the final physical version (i.e; Reiner during his fight with Eren in chapters 118-120, and the "unrequited love" kanji too). But since the release in Japan was months ago, and no one mentioned changes in Levi's speech, I assume the "we" continued in the original up to these days (someone correct me if I'm wrong, please).

Thus, until it's proved that Yams himself changed the kanji to "all of you" or similar, I think it's wiser to stick to what Yams himself had written. He wrote "oretachi", then it's "we" - with Levi included. And based on our experience with the mixed translations confusions, we know by now how things get tangled up in the official translations. Which is a pity, imo.

So what do you think this alteration changes about *his own* ideals and goal in following the same path as his friends in the SC? What could this mean for his character when he's excluding himself of owning such ideals?

I'm sticking to the first official translations + the Japanese version, so nothing changes in my view. But for readers non-aware of the issue, I think this might solidify a bit of a borderline issue about what Levi's goals were regarding his overall purpose in joining the Survey Corps and fighting.

Like, most people already mistakenly think that Levi was 1) just fighting the whole time for Erwin [as his "vassal"], 2) to avenge Erwin's and SC soldiers' death, 3) to kill Zeke, 4) was Ackerbonded with Erwin in a way that made him lost his life's purpose when his "liege" died. So, imo, the way the new translation makes Levi exclude himself from fighting for the dream of one day humanity living free from the terror of Titans will suggest (or hint) more that Levi was like a tool fighting more for the sake of the dead rather than the living - and worse, because he didn't believe in what his comrades were fighting for.

Idk if I can explain it properly, but in other words, it's like this new translation makes Levi skeptical of the reason why all his comrades were fighting for, like, almost as if he was distancing himself/ looking down on their "naive hopes for a better future" without including himself in the same hopeful boat?! And I think Yams didn't mean it like that but rather that they (Levi included) were ALL together in the bloody fight and life of sacrifice and devoted hearts because they hoped one day that hellish struggle against the nearly impossible would result in something hopeful too?!

Also, of course, we know Levi's post-RtS narrative has a clear focus on giving meaning to fallen comrades' deaths (and there is nothing wrong with it). But this moment right here in chapter 136 seems a clear recall of the main goal of the Survey Corps as a whole (and also Levi's). The chapter title is "Devote your hearts" or "Dedicate your hearts", and the chapter is an answer to all the terror we saw happening in chapter 134, and chapter 135 - where the Marleyan Commander asked, "What do you think those people are fighting for?" And the SC's goal was primarily Humanity's freedom. So I think it's a misstep of the official translation to take Levi out of this shared dream since Yams himself purposely included Levi in it.

Additionally, while it's actually arguable that the word "dream" hold different weights for everyone individually, as each character has their own particular wish - dream - life goal regarding WHY they joined the SC, and WHY they were fighting Eren now at the cost of their lives, I think it's quite clear that together, in the collective sense, everyone just wanted to see a world where people would live with some dignity and free of constant fear of Titans. In other words, "To put an end to their recurring nightmare", as Levi explains with his own words in chapter 56. Unless, again, we're dealing with translation mistakes.

We all know part of the reason Levi joined the SC - other than saving humanity - was to breathe a fresh air outside the walls. He said many times he wanted to rid the world of titans so humanity could be free but does this right here add new information to our knowledge?

This passage of Levi you mentioned is one of the most significant and yet (and sadly) one of the most brushed off pieces of his narrative.

I really feel like the weight of his words here is real, and he meant it... (I also have a more personal and philosophical take on what Yams might have intended to imply here, but it's long and relates to the Yeager brothers take on life and freedom so let's skip it for now)

"I finally saw what I'd been missing"

Interestingly, just like Hanji’s personal reason to join the SC is more directly revealed in a close-up interview, Levi restated in a close up that he joined the SC after also realizing that he had various reasons to follow Erwin and for join the SC:

"The feeling of the wind when we’re going beyond the walls… it’s different from the wind in the Underground or even the wind inside the wall, and it’s quite alluring."

Now, I know Levi is the most selfless character of AOT and he never did something with the intention of particularly being benefited/fulfilled in the way Erwin, Armin, Kenny, and other people did. But remembering that Levi wanted freedom doesn't mean Levi is any less selfless than he is, nor that he had a dream to give up or wanted something selfishly for himself. In fact, there is nothing that makes it denigrating or less of Levi's devotion to humanity in him wanting the freedom outside the Walls.

It's even more relevant to remember that at the time Levi got the chance to breathe the air outside the Walls he was literally riding in the unknown world outside of Wall Maria - where barely no man was capable of wandering out and coming back alive. So it wasn't a matter of Levi simply getting out of the Underground and retaking the land humanity lost to the Titans, but Levi really realizing there was more to life out there and him wanting to know the opportunities hidden in the freedom that the Titans had stolen from humanity (at that time, Paradis). It's a very credible and worthy reason to join the "SC Dreamer Bunch", together with his sense that he had the power (and responsibility) to help humanity achieve freedom and that - looking up to this ideal from Erwin - he could make this his life mission.

So to me, these are some of the many layers of his character that help people to feel closer to him irl, and to be more empathetic to his battles and plight. And I think that WIT did a terrible thing in presenting Levi without showing these parts of him because most people know Levi by the anime characterization. It's really a disservice to his character.

And now, with the official translation that had been already putting Levi under a stronger "I live to get revenge for monkey's deed" light, I think this final official translation does another disservice to Levi too. Also, there are more problems with the other sentences in this monologue that I feel it has mixed up what Yams also intended to show especially regarding Levi's close-up on Hanji and Erwin...

twisted wonderland theories part 3 : Opening explanation and parallels

Well well , hope you guys enjoyed reading the previous two parts of twst theories so far

Anyways , this is the third part . I decided to go through the opening and original disney animations and also black Butler anime references one more time so this is the combination of all I've found this time , together with some stuff you might've missed

Twst's official opening was pretty mysterious and is most likely giving us hints of the upcoming adventures during the storyline . Well here's the link to opening with eng sub and also the summary of the main character references that were given to us:

1) Ace and Deuce's rivalship : We talked about this one a lot back in (part 2) so let's skip this one

2) Leona's sadness and pain : Leona's tearn falling to the ground and the Ruggie and Jack coming for him ; that's just how he always is : mentally sad and broken with a horribly frustrating past , but will avoid expressing himself and letting anyone see his pain anyway . Not really weird that these two are always around him , Leona does really need to be looked after ...

3) Azul's seek of power : He just looked...mad in this scene . Ursula's shadow on his fave and that creepy smile totally freaks anyone out. It really explains how great his desire of power is . His neglected self in the childhood and pretty poor talent got him to this point...

4) Jamil's cold and kinda confused self : Well this one isn't really clear yet since ch 4 isn't out . But perhaps depression has this guy... spending his whole life serving the the nasty Kalim he might've grown the same characteristics as Jafar , who was so long sick of being the second one in everything . But still his ideal of life is much different from Jafar's . We saw him hypnotizing Kalim in order to make him force students to do better at school . He's trying his best to leave up to his promises as the vice dorm leader but still , having the nasty Kalim as the dorm itself is making it a lot harder for him so he's got no choice but to hypnotize him...

5) Idia's severe anxiety and his protectiveness toward Ortho : This one was mentioned in s rather old re blog but here e go again : Well with how the rumors of the "cursed Shroud family" , Idia's anti-society self might be a bit explained . This guy's overblot is surely going to be EPIC ... we just know very few about him and yet that's more than enough for him to overblot at once . Also the mention of the process of bringing Ortho back to life was a bad hit...His family curse might've been the reason of whatever thst has happened to Ortho

6) Vil's anger of not being the fairest and breaking the mirror: This one's been pointed out a lot . His anger being the same as evil queen's and also the fear of him actually poisoning someone to become the fairest one more time....**

7) Malleus' isolated self and his hidden evil aura : This one's being shown too obviously . The lonely dark prince exposing his evil side under the full moonlight . All alone , beyond the forest of thorns (Lol how ironic) while the others are running to save him before it gets too late...***

Very well these were the general hints found on the opening , but don't miss the final seconds which included the biggest hidden facts you could've missed

Firstly , the splitted ink (This one was previously discussed on part 1 but still...) : We talked about how in the "Epic Mickey", Mickey accidentally splits the magic ink over the kingdom and which led to the creation of "shadow blot". This sight seems to be much similar to what we had here in the epic mickey

Well this parallel might be more than just an accidental one and finally and it might actually be that overblot is kinda Crowley's fault , too

Crowley crosses the mirror , turns into an actual crow and flies away...(DaMn YoU bIrDiE wHERe ArE yOu gOinG I'M noT doNe YeT-)

Well the reason he suddenly runs away isn't clear yet but being a fan of black butler for years , I was suddenly reminded of how Undertaker disappeared all of a sudden at this scene from the movie :" Book of Atlantic "

pretty similar , aren't they..?

In Book of Atlantic , Undertaker revealed his original identity as a reaper and the mastermind behind the "Bizzare dolls' " project after pretending to be a just a crazy cookie lover for so long . And at once , he comes up with his stunning sudden self-reveal , leaving everyone in the room speechless

Now now , what do we have with Crowley?

A principal who keeps hiding his face (remember that Undertaker hid his eyes , too?) , telling everyone "how kind he is" many times ... also:

1) In the opening , he was standing smiling in the mirror hall while the seven dorms were burning through seven mirrors

2) He didn't ever try to stop anyone from overbloting ; even Riddle whose overblot occurred right in front of him

3) In the beggining of the game, he asked the mirror to choose the right one and then! and MC was chosen ! MC took the hand of the one appearing through the mirror (seemingly Dire Crowley) and came here. With all said , so why did the mirror reject MC afterwards?

Also , how couldn't he help MC return to Their own world and didn't know about it if he himself brought MC here..?(Could it be that...MC doesn't remember how she/he was brought here?)

4) If he literally is THIS useless and can't ever stop or help anything, then why would he be the principal.....?

Sooooo enough with Crowley ; but what's with these two....?

The spindle wheel & the poison apple ; Sleeping beauty and Snow white

Well it seems that Diasomnia and Pomefiore are going to play a greatly important role in the storyline . We were kinda sure of Diasomnia's but Pomefiore's...? What's so special with it?

(A few hours earlier)

(Me : Hmmm ... the black mirror...where have I seen this before..? *googling - searching Snow White- going to the magic mirror scene* Me : Uh...)

Well... here it is : The Crowley's beloved flower of evil , back at his days with evil queen

feeling old yet ...?

Btw , just how important is being "the fairest one of all "to him ? How 'far' would he go to be the fairest...? With the bitten apple in the last few seconds of opening , it most likely seems that he IS gonna 'kill' to be the fairest again ...Who would he kill ? We don't know . But how about our pretty small guy Epel? Could it be him ? The stubborn freshman who refuses following Vil around and is usually mistaken with a girl......?

Also , why would the original mirror be so important to Crowley? If Vil's supposed to represent evil queen , why isn't 'he' the one owing the mirror...?

And now , the spindle wheel .Great maleficent's legacy , in the hands of Crowley...Well well this is 'too' much . Malleus' family treasure being kept hidden in NRC... pathetic

Also , the mirror which Vil broke in the opening . Well well seems like he isn't having the original magic mirror , afterall....

But wait , if there's the spindle wheel , who's gonna be the evil witch to pull the sweet princess to eternal sleep..? Right , there's only one who might be...

Well we talked about all we'd got so far , but what about Grim ? Isn't anyone going to mention his importance or why he was also mentioned in this chaotic final seconds of opening ???

So... this is what we had in the final seconds :

4)Grim

5)The spindle wheel

We talked about all of them except nu 4 . But before that , I've got the same question as before : Why is it "Sleeping beauty" & "Snow white"..?

Very well , ever heard of "Grimm brothers"...?

In the case that you don't know who they are , here' the point : They are the authors of 'original' versions of sleeping beauty & snow white; two of the darkest , deepest and possibly creepiest stories of their own throughout the history

I believe that most of you are familiar with the original versions , but you may like to take a look at these two if you haven't yet heard of them check the two of these stories out : (note: I'm aware that there are darker , deeper versions of these too but I'm not gonna mention any of them because : 1)They aren't written by Grimm brothers & 2) They include overly sensual and inappropriate content which has no place in my posts . If you care to know about them , check them at your own risk)

Alright , if you ever wondered who was Grim named after , I guess we've got it now . Mentioning Grim , Snow white and Sleeping beauty together at once is too direct to be a coincidence ...but it's also terrifying ...

Thinking that Disney is actually referring to the original books written by Grimm brothers is a bit too dark... Original stories are really horrible and a great way to ruin one's childhood , but all these hints fit each other way too great and now , they may no longer be just a coincidence...
