lily and regulus in the backseat of remus car drunk and giggling, singing at the top of their lungs and being so silly while remus chastises them
sadly my reg & lily don’t get along all that well with remus……. or like they just generally don’t care for the marauders and the only reason they ever played nice with them was when 1. lily was james’ gf or 2. because reg is sirius’ brother

@wolfstarmicrofic September 6 - prompt 6: Time-Turner [word count 622]
It had become a sort of routine, the first night after they all came back to Hogwarts after spending the holidays apart. After the train ride, and the banquet, when they closed the door of their dorm, they kicked off their shoes and gathered on James’s bed. There, Sirius finally let the cheery mask he had worn since that morning drop and nestled in James’s arms, James delicately passing a hand in his hair. Remus kneeled at the bottom of the bed and slowly rolled up Sirius’s trousers, doing his best not to grimace at the sight of the new wounds appearing on the back of Sirius’s calves, and delicately applied a healing pomade Poppy gave him every Full, before bandaging them. Peter then carefully measured the right amount of drops of the Sleeping Draught he had brewed to give Sirius a good, dreamless night of sleep without knocking him out immediately. After that they all relaxed back on the pillows, or on James’s chest in Sirius’s case, and played the Time-Turner game.
“If I had a Time-Turner,” Peter was saying in that moment, “I would travel back and meet the founders of Hogwarts.”
“That would be cool,” Remus agreed. “I wonder how different they were to how they’ve been pictured in History.”
“I’m a direct descendant of Salazar Slytherin, according to family lore,” Sirius yawned, the Sleeping Draught evidently close to achieving its goal. “So he must have been insanely hot too.”
“Of course, Pads,” James smiled, patting him on the head.
Remus caught himself nodding and stopped immediately, but not before Peter shot him a knowing look and he turned away, feeling his cheeks heat up. Damn that stupid crush of his on Sirius fucking Black of all people.
“If I had a Time-Turner,” James went on, “I would travel back and watch a Quidditch game when McGonagall played Chaser for Gryffindor.”
“That would be awesome!” Peter exclaimed. “Also, can you imagine her at our age?”
There was a moment of silence, then they all shook their heads laughing. Sirius managed to yawn mid-laugh and ended up closing his eyes, his nose buried  in James’s shirt.
“If I had a Time-Turner,” Remus said, “I would go back and meet Merlin himself.”
“I kind of imagine him like Dumbledore in a way. Maybe you would find out they’re related,” James smiled, moving his hand in Sirius’s hair. “Pads? Do you want to keep playing or are you asleep?”
“If I had a Time-Turner,” Sirius mumbled without even opening his eyes, “I would travel back and stop my mother and my Uncle Cygnus from murdering my Uncle Alphard, so that he could live on and take me and Regulus in.”
A stunned silence followed, the only sound Sirius’s snores. They looked at each other, eyes wide, each wondering if what they had just heard was true, each of them knowing deep down it was. Nothing was past the so-called Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, and they were well placed to know not even their own members were safe. Remus’s hands balled into fists as James’s arms closed protectively around Sirius’s sleeping form.
“If I had a Time-Turner, I would go back and blast both Orion and Walburga Black out of existence,” Remus whispered.
He swallowed, his eyes moving from Sirius’s bandaged calves to his face, finally serene in his sleep. Peter leaned closer and silently pried Remus’s hands open just before he could break the skin.
“Unfortunately,” Remus went on, his voice trembling, “they did manage to make one of the things I love the most in this world and I would never want to lose him.”
He was grateful his friends chose just to nod and smile at him.

Four Names
A microfic written for Day 5 of Jily Week 2024, run by the very lovely @sunshinemarauder and @kay-elle-cee, and inspired by the theme Matchmaker, Matchmaker - a little push for our stubborn duo!

Albus Dumbledore has an important choice to make...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Albus Dumbledore sat at his desk, staring at the list in front of him. Four names, from which to make his choice. One by one, he considered them carefully.
Remus Lupin had the character, certainly, but Albus couldn’t help thinking that Remus had enough on his plate, what with managing the effects of the lunar cycle on his health on top of his N.E.W.T. workload. At times, Albus wondered whether his choice of Remus as a prefect had been too much; this would certainly be a step too far.
Next, William Foster, of Hufflepuff. Albus made his decision quickly, though with more than a little regret. William would make an excellent Head Boy, but choosing a second muggleborn Head Student was more of a statement than he wanted to make, given the current political climate.
Jonathan Corner wasn’t really a contender either. He was competent, efficient and (clearly, as the Ravenclaw prefect) extremely intelligent, but he was unfortunately somewhat abrasive, and lacking in the leadership qualities that Albus felt were so important in the role.
That only left Josiah Carrow. None of Albus’s other objections applied to the Slytherin prefect  - he didn’t have any health issues to consider, his pureblood status would satisfy the need for balance, and he was certainly the most natural leader of the group. Josiah was the obvious choice - and yet Albus hesitated.
The problem was that Albus wasn’t supposed to know about the Carrow family’s close links to Tom Riddle. He wasn’t supposed to know that young Josiah had already been introduced to his inner circle. And he certainly wasn't supposed to know that Josiah would be taking the Dark Mark at a ceremony scheduled for some time in August, and would be a Death Eater himself by the time he returned to school in September. No, he wasn’t supposed to know any of it - but thanks to the latest intelligence received by the Order of the Phoenix, he did. And he couldn’t in all conscience pair his stand-out pick of a Head Girl, Lily Evans, with an actual Death Eater of a Head Boy.
So - what to do? Albus tapped his quill on the parchment thoughtfully, considering his options. He’d never chosen a head student from outside of his prefect group before, but perhaps, for once, it might be his best option. Was there someone else that would fit the bill? Someone who thrived on more responsibility, not less. A pureblood who wasn’t a blood fanatic. A charismatic and popular leader. When Albus thought about it like that, one name in particular suggested itself immediately; James Potter.
Lily, of course, might have an entirely different set of objections to James as her Head Boy than she would if Albus were to appoint Josiah Carrow. Albus probably wasn’t supposed to know about that either, but wasn’t blind, and nor was he as unaware of the… less academic aspects of his student’s lives as many would have suspected.
He’d seen their relationship change over the years, from indifference to antagonism and finally blossoming into friendship. Over the spring term, he’d noted the lingering gazes and sudden blushes and he’d wondered if he would soon hear murmurs that spring’s blossom had become summer’s blooms - but it hadn’t happened, not yet.
Albus would never, of course, appoint a pair of Head Students if he wasn’t totally confident that they were up to the job, but neither was he averse to finessing his selection if offered… other possible advantages. He generally kept it very well hidden, but the fact was that Albus Dumbledore was a hopeless romantic, and in this case, he couldn’t help but wonder if throwing the pair of them together in this way might not provide just the little push they needed. The more he thought about it, the more he warmed to the idea.
Slowly, a smile spread across his face.  Decision made, he selected a fresh sheet or parchment, and began to write.
Dear James, Congratulations on your appointment to the position of Hogwarts Head Boy! Please find enclosed your badge…
Fic Name: A Beautiful Disaster
Writer Name: @r33sespieces
Rating: Explicit
Content Warnings: No Content Warnings Apply
Pairing: Sirius Black/Remus Lupin/James Potter
Prompt: Prompt #4–Character A is an omega making some money as a surrogate. As he meets the couple, he quickly discovers one of them is an old hookup he didn't quite forget, so carrying his child and keeping the situation strictly professional will be a challenge.
Summary: After Remus Lupin finishes Hogwarts, he largely removes himself from wix society. It's a dangerous place for a werewolf omega; he prefers the anonymity and relative safety of the muggle world. But even there, things aren't perfect, and it's hard to make ends meet. As a last-ditch attempt to keep himself afloat and finally finish his degree, he decides to act as a surrogate for a pair of mated alphas. Unfortunately for Remus, he and one of the alphas already know each other well. Perhaps a little too well.
AOT/SNK Veterans: Academic Headcannons (but Marauders-style/vibes!)
This is from an ongoing idea I had and a post I saw saying that the veterans are just AOT's version of the Marauders Era. It's for that 5% crossover in both fandoms.
Levi Ackerman is the Remus Lupin when it comes to playing pranks on the school. He lived the thug life (ATYD reference), he knows the ins and outs of not getting caught.
Hange Zoë is a bit Sirius Black. She actively searches for ways to prank, unlike Levi, and whenever he has the slightest idea, she is all over it, filling in the details and making the actual plans.
She loves to blow things up in classes and lectures, too. She has a streak for mischief.
Erwin Smith has James Potter's heroic streak, but Remus' study habits. He and Levi always pretend not to be amused by Hange and Mike Zacharias' prank ideas, but they find themselves participating for some unknown reason anyway.
Unfortunately, most Marauders content doesn't go into detail with Peter, because a lot of people hate Peter (young Peter is so innocent, though). Mike is now Peter Pettigrew because he sniffs and Peter is a rat (I just did them so dirty, I'm sorry).
Now I am imagining that instead of houses, the school is just split into the Military Police, the Survey Corps, and the Garrison. I am not sure what that means, though.
All four of them are known for their smarts, because what are the Marauders if not effortlessly [and infuriatingly] intelligent? Erwin is top of the class every time, and is often seen studying and putting the work in. Mike follows soon after, despite being seen as a slacker (nobody ever seems to be able to find him studying). Levi studies like a normal human being and passes with low A's. Hange doesn't really study, but she goes out of her way to apply the knowledge outside of lectures and classes; she may not have the best exam scores, but she knows the material the best (because the school system is broken).
Erwin always looks perfectly put together; necktie done, buttoned up to the throat like a loser (jk), his hair done as it usually is. He is unerringly civil with his peers and underclassmen, and people look up to him as some sort of star student.
Levi is the same in appearance, though with his blazer thrown stylishly over his shoulders instead of worn correctly (he took Hange's). He's seen as very aloof by his peers, but not unkind. Though I imagine he did bully Erwin (not entirely seriously) when they were younger. This amused Erwin to no end. He didn't care then, but now Levi is made fun of for it.
Mike looks fashionably disheveled, but not in the way that makes it look intentional (though, it may be intentional). His tie is a little loose, top few buttons undone, sleeves rolled up to his elbows. The whole charade.
Hange looks unfashionably disheveled, but as is insisted upon by my biased mind, he's still really beautiful. He's one of those people who are only ever outside with their hair up; only Levi, Erwin and Mike (their dorm mates, I suppose) have ever seen him with his hair undone. It is oddly intimate, but nice.
Each of Hange's friends carries a spare pair of glasses for her, because she always breaks her own in the strangest of ways.
For their lunch hour, the four of them routinely congregate in the same bathroom because Levi makes them all wash their hands before leaving to actually eat.
Erwin and Hange are study buddies! They like to sit in the library as a pair and Hange will quiz Erwin because he cares about studying. He likes to study with her because she always has interesting things to add on, or she might be elaborating on a piece in the textbook and helping him understand better.
Of course, they do all sit in the library together. Erwin and Hange do their studying, Mike gets bored and bothers Levi, and Levi gets annoyed as he drinks his tea and reads a book.
They stargaze as a group in their dormitory, either at the windows or on the rooftops.
They also get drunk together and stumble home laughing on the weekends or on hot summer nights.
It was a pleasant morning in the mindscape. The weather was warm but not humid, with a gentle breeze and a speckling of fluffy white clouds in the bright blue sky. Birdsong drifted through the air as if in celebration of this marvelous morning, a cheery start to this lovely day.
Remus didn’t notice or care. He had spent the last two days cooped up in his room working on his latest project, far too absorbed in the obsessive enthusiasm of his work to even acknowledge the passage of time. It was certainly well past time for breakfast by now and Remus was definitely in the mood for a snack or two, but this was way more important. It had taken him hours of planning and plenty of pain in his hands, but his work was finally finished. He stretched and sat up with a wide grin, admiring his newest masterpiece.
It was a doll, small but sturdy and sewn with more practiced care than Remus even thought he had in him, crafted in Janus’ likeness.
The idea had come to him after the Secret Santa, when he saw the piss poor attempt at a gift his brother had given Janus. Socks, really? As if that somehow made up for his petty bitch slap? Well, Remus was ready to show his brother what a proper gift looks like, and what better present than a personalized plush like the other sides had?
It took time to get what he needed, gathering the materials by rifling through the sides garbage when they were too busy to notice. He had already used up everything he could from Joanne Fabric but there were plenty of recyclable items in everyone else’s rooms, and it’s not like they’d miss stuff they’d already thrown away. One side’s trash is another side’s treasure and all that. He had taken the hair from their hairbrushes for stuffing, spare scraps of cloth from their trash, and even repurposed a couple of the socks from the dryer, along with the lint he had found there. By far the best thing he had found was the shed snakeskin he had pulled from Janus’ trash. Remus didn’t even know Janus could shed, but it was definitely cool. All he needed left was a reference for the pattern, so he had nicked Roman's plushie from his room as well. He was sure Roman wouldn’t mind too much, and he was going to put it back when he was done anyway.
Once he had what he needed, he got straight (hah) to work and didn’t stop. He wanted to make sure he could get it right, and what better way to do that than with a rough draft.
His eyes drifted over to his own plushie Remus, letting himself feel a twinge of pride in his finished project. It wasn’t completely like the Roman plushie, but then again that was the point of it being a rough draft. It was flawed by design, and he liked it that way. The plushie stared back at him with a lopsided smile that was barely visible under the crooked mustache he had embroidered. There was a spattering of blood on it from where he had pricked his fingers over and over as he stitched, but it only made the doll look even cooler in Remus’ opinion. The outfit looked surprisingly good and it matched his own quite well, even though it lacked the more subtle details and designs he couldn’t properly apply. The limbs were a little longer and looser than they were supposed to be, with the seams visible and the stitchwork evident. He had used buttons for the eyes after he gave up on embroidery, and they only added to the Coraline/voodoo ragdoll look of the plush.
It was creepy and morbid and cool in a weird way, just like him.
The Janus doll was much better than his own, at least in quality. The seams were more subtle, the outfit more defined. He had even managed to make a tiny hat for the doll after discreetly borrowing Janus’ original to copy off of. He had originally attempted to stick the shed skin right on the doll, but when that failed he instead sewed sequins to the left side of the face as scales. They sparkled and shone in the light in a way that Janus’ own scales never did. The button eyes were two different colors, an ordinary brown one and a yellow-green one for his snake eye. It was far closer in size and proportions to the plushie Roman reference, and while it wasn’t exactly like the real deal it was still impressively close. It really was some of his best work.
Remus leaned back in his chair and smiled, relishing the aching stiffness in his back as if it were a badge of honor. What better gift to give Janus than his own unofficial plushie, a symbol of his acceptance into the group? The mere thought of it brought a warm glow to Remus’ chest. Janus had been struggling and fighting for recognition for years now, and now that he had it he deserved his own plush like the others. Besides, Remus felt he ought to thank Janus for giving him a nice day. It had been the best day he’d had in a very long time, and he wanted to do something to let Janus know he appreciated it even if he wasn’t the best at showing it outright.
Janus really did deserve something nice for putting up with him all this time, anyway. After Virgil abandoned them like that they had no one left but each other, and Remus would have lost what little of his mind he had left if he had been completely alone. Instead, Janus stayed with him and kept him company, and while their little family had diminished, he at least still had a part of it with him. Now they were being accepted by Thomas, and he could finally be around his brother again. He could see Virgil more and hang out with Logan and Patton in a way he was never able to, and he wanted to show them that he was happy to be a part of them now. They all had their own plushies, and now so did Janus and Remus. It was perfect.
He grabbed the leftover stuff from the other sides and left his room for the first time in days. He planned on sneaking everyone’s things back to where he had grabbed them, and then he would go back and grab the plushies to show the others. Or even just show Janus in private at first.
He crept down the hall to the others’ rooms when he heard muted conversation downstairs. The voices were low but he could tell that most if not all of the sides were in the living room. Well, if they were all down there then he could just give them their stuff back directly. Remus was sure they’d appreciate that. He made his way to the top of the stairs as he tried to get a better sense of their conversation, curious about what they could all be talking about.
“I just don’t see why you’re defending him,” Roman snapped, struggling not to shout.
“I’m not, I’m just saying that if we hear him out- “, Patton started.
“What? He’ll change? This is Remus we’re talking about, he’s not capable of being anything other than a troublesome pain in the ass and you know it,” his brother said with a groan.
Remus bit his lip until it bled. Sure, he knew he was a lot to deal with, but surely he wasn’t that bad, right? Besides, that was just Roman talking, the others probably felt differently about him.
"While I hate to say it, Roman may have somewhat of a point,” Logan chimed in. “Remus is a representation of Thomas’ darker and more disturbing thoughts and creativity; we can’t expect him to suddenly stop being that now. Wanting Remus to tone that part of himself down is like asking Virgil to not be anxious about a stressful scenario.”
"First of all, rude,” Virgil grumbled. “And secondly, I’ve dealt with him long enough to know that he can’t change, mostly because he doesn’t want to.”
Remus stayed on top of the stairs, uncertain whether he could move away even if he wanted to. All he could do was listen in to what the others were saying about him.
"I don’t see why any of you are complaining about him at all,” Janus drawled. “You aren’t stuck with him all day every day. I can’t even get away from him half the time, putting up with his little ramblings and pranks and all kinds of nonsense. I’m getting a headache right now just thinking about it,” he said with a sigh. Remus could imagine him rubbing his temples as he spoke.
"Yeah, well it serves you right, you really aren’t that much better than him anyway,” Roman replied with a scoff. If Remus could move right now, he’d have bashed Roman's skull in for that.
"At least I’m being helpful here,” Janus replied. “It’s not like anyone else is, not even Remus.”
Remus let their things fall from his limp hands with a gasp, distantly registering the clattering of the sides’ belongings as they fell to the floor. The Roman plushie bounced slightly upon impact and rolled downstairs to join its real-life counterpart. Even Roman's doll didn’t want to be with him.
The conversation came to a halt as they all no doubt noticed the noise and the plush come from upstairs. As the realization sank in that the other sides were now aware of his presence, Remus turned and raced back to his room, not caring how much noise he made. He slammed the door shut behind him with a loud bang before locking it for the first time in his life with shaky hands.
He really thought they were past all of that by now, or at least on the way to moving on from it. He did try to keep his thoughts to himself, but it was hard to hold all of those ideas down without a few of them slipping out. It wasn’t his fault that his mind could only make the most morbid of musings, that his head was full of all things strange and off-putting. He knew Patton didn’t enjoy his presence, and Logan made it clear that he didn’t care for him, but to hear his own brother talk about him like that? Knowing that he and Virgil hated him that much? It made his heart sink.
He had already known that he disgusted the others, it was really all he was good at anyway, but even when everyone else hated him he at least still had Janus backing him up. Or at least he thought he did. Now it turns out Janus can’t stand him either, he was just better at hiding it. At a time when Remus felt abandoned by everyone, Janus had stayed with him. He didn’t want to, though. Looking back, it was obvious how much he disliked Remus. All of the times Janus would roll his eyes when he wasn’t looking, the thinly veiled disgust and irritation in his voice whenever Remus asked him something, it all became glaringly clear to him at that moment. Janus didn’t like him; he was just stuck with him because the others didn’t accept him. Now that he had a seat at the table he didn’t need to deal with Remus anymore. He didn’t need to pretend to care about him.
Remus really didn’t know why any of this was surprising him. He wasn’t exactly of the same stock as Janus. Janus was classy and suave and charismatically charming. Remus was gross and creepy and just an absolute freak. Janus said so himself, right before giving Remus that nice day. Even then he had hated him, apparently. Did Janus ever like him? Did Virgil or Roman? Did Thomas?
He knew the answer. No. He wasn’t designed to be anything other than hated, ever since he came into existence. His sole purpose was to be a manifestation of everything that Thomas rejected, everything he didn’t want to associate with. He was made with this in mind, he exists to be despised by everyone, especially his own brother. He’s his polar opposite after all. He is everything Roman isn’t supposed to be; every mistake, every unwanted idea, every forbidden thought.
The muffled sound of knocking at his door got his attention. He could hear someone calling his name, though their identity was drowned out by the flimsy wooden barrier. Maybe it was Roman here to apologize for what he had said. Or Virgil wanting to thank him for Mr. Fuzzy. It might even be Janus asking to come in to just sit and relax with him like they so often did. What little hope Remus could muster died in an instant as he remembered why he was hiding in his room in the first place.
Right, Roman would never apologize for being the perfect sibling he was supposed to be. That was his job, just like Remus was supposed to be the unloved black sheep. And Virgil wasn’t about to mention Mr. Fuzzy at all now that he had buried it away in the back of his closet to be forgotten. Remus hoped Mr. Fuzzy wasn’t too cold or lonely back there, even though it was probably best kept where no one would ever see it. It probably wasn’t even Janus outside his door. He wanted nothing to do with Remus, why would he bother with him at all now that he had his new friends to talk to? No one wanted to talk to him, never had and never will.
The doorknob jiggled slightly, as whoever it was tried to come in only to be stopped by the lock. The knocking got louder, the voice more desperate. A part of Remus wanted to let them in, but he squashed that part down and stomped it out under his boot. What good would letting them in do? All they would do is ask if he was alright, he’d tell them he was fine, and then they’d slap a cheap emotional band aid on the situation with a half-assed “sorry” so they could move on and forget him again. It wasn’t worth it. He wasn’t worth any of it.
The intruder kept knocking, kept calling his name, and Remus wanted them gone. He took hold of his Morningstar and bashed at the door, hard enough to splinter the wood.
He sat back down at his desk, looking at the plushies he had finished making earlier that morning. The Janus plush smirked up at him, almost mockingly. The gift he had made for the one side he thought actually cared about him, now a waste of material, time, and care. This stupid doll wouldn’t win Janus back, it couldn’t make him like Remus. He never did to begin with. Besides, if Janus saw this sad excuse for a present he’d probably laugh in his face before shoving it deep in his closet to forget about it the same way Virgil did to Mr. Fuzzy.
“Fucking GO AWAY ALREADY!” He shrieked, warping and distorting his voice to mask the emotion that threatened to spill free at any second. He kept swinging at the door until he broke a whole clean through it, only stopping to look through to the outside. Whoever had been out there was gone now. Remus half wished that they had stayed, and he half wished that they hadn’t shown up at all. He set his weapon down and repaired the door with a wave of his hand.
It hardly even looked like him in the first place. The sequin scales shined obnoxiously bright in a way Janus never appreciated, button eyes lacking any of the mischievous mirth in the deceptive sides own eyes. It was pathetic. Remus was pathetic for actually thinking this was worthy of him.
He threw the Janus plush under his bed, half hoping the monsters under there ate it up so he wouldn’t have to look at his failure anymore.
He drifted his gaze back to his own plushie. It stared back at him, lopsided button eyes piercing his soul. It really was nothing like Roman's plush; it was crudely stitched with stains and seams and crooked features that made it look like some messed up Picasso piece. He took it in hand, turning it over and better examining his so-called “masterpiece”. The blood that spattered its face made it look gross and creepy, and the ill-sewn limbs were all disproportionate and almost laughably bad. The outfit was cheaply done and lacked any real texture or shape, making it easy to forget about so he could better focus on all of the other mistakes. The mustache he had tried and failed to properly embroider was frayed and crooked, and it looked like it could come loose if he so much as stared at it wrong. The hair was matted and undone and the button eyes lacked any expressiveness besides an eerie stare.
It was creepy and morbid and all kinds of wrong, just like him.
He was flawed by design, unlikeable that way.
Why did he think he deserved to have his own doll? He wasn’t a part of anything, and he was definitely not a part of the group. He had no right to go and try to pretend he could be a part of the family when not even Thomas himself wanted him around. He didn’t deserve to belong, and he didn’t need this stupid reminder of just how wrong and unwanted he really was.
His fist tightened around the plush, squeezing it tightly in his hand before he grabbed its head and tore it off with a jerk and a bit back growl. It fell apart easily, the stitches too loose to hold any resistance. It was a clean rip, and he could easily sew it back together. He could still fix it…
He tore the rest of the limbs off, ripping and pulling and clawing and shredding until there was nothing left of the doll. His heartbeat pounded in his skull and ears were ringing, or maybe it was the sound of himself screaming. Either way he was out of breath by the time he had worn himself out, hoarsely huffing like the big bad wolf. The fabric and stuffing flew and fluttered like snow as it softly fell to the floor around him. It wasn’t a plushie anymore, it didn’t even look like him at all now. Now it was just trash, another failure to be thrown away.
He gathered the scattered materials and shoved them deep into his garbage can, pushing past the mountain of crumpled up papers that once held ideas, songs, stories. Contributions.
Mistakes.
He threw a lit match in after the doll, watching as the trash went up in flames. The fire ate up the waste greedily, eager to destroy all of those things that he never should have made in the first place. It was stupid of him to think that he could come up with any good ideas when he wasn’t even a good idea himself. All he could make were bad ideas and failures and godawful nonsense. Just more things that were only good for kindling.
For a moment he thought about giving himself up to the fire, too. Letting the biggest mistake of them all finally burn away and be gone forever, so no one would have to deal with it anymore. It sounded tempting, and he would have done it if he thought it would work. But it wouldn’t, and he knew that. It wouldn’t kill him, wouldn’t destroy him, hell it wouldn’t even hurt him. He couldn’t even get rid of himself, arguably the only good thing he could do for the others.
The knocking returned to his door, softer but still persistent. The same side, or someone else? It didn’t really matter anyway. Whoever it was wasn’t going to make it better, wasn’t going to apologize or care. He stayed put, desperately wishing for the sound to stop. Maybe if he didn’t say anything they’d just give up and go away. They always left him alone before, why would they stick around now? He ignored the knocking, focusing instead on the fire as it started to dwindle and die out. Soon it would leave him too, and then he’d be completely alone. Only this time it would be for forever. Now that he knew that not even Janus liked him, he surely wasn’t going to bother anyone anymore. The very least he could do for them was spare them the pain and frustration of his annoying and unwanted presence. He’ll just stay here until everyone forgot about him completely.
It was probably for the best anyway.
Then what about the extra arms you can summon? Are those an illusion too?
-🐍
Clever. I like you.
Yes, my arms are a complete illusion. I've never had to apply for a job, so it's a quick and easy lie Remus and I do. I used to just use illusion magic for it, but then people would try and touch them, so now Remus will use his tentacles, and I disguise them as my arms. Of course, when he helps me, he doesn't go unpaid. It's just unfortunate that the only things he wants in return for help are having me watch movie with him and his movie choices are all horror which he'll talk about the easier and grosser ways to kill things..... Either that or he chooses low-budget films and asks me moral questions about these characters and their universes, which are all horrific.
I both admire and despise how grotesque he can make anything he puts his mind too.
Platontic Sides Week Day 2: Vacations
“For the last time, we’re not, and will never, swim on your side!” Roman yelled, but Remus kept poking him as he rambled on and on about the various benefits of the beaches on his side of the Imagination, like Lovecraftian monsters and seaweed that tangled around your leg and pulled you down, down, down into the watery abyss until you floated to the surface, gasses from decomposition escaping your blue-tinged lips. Roman failed to see anything beneficial about any of that, but had long accepted that trying to figure out how Remus found joy in any of his interests was like trying to get a true ant’s eye perspective by smooshing his face into the ground. Uncomfortable, and would never actually work.
“Oh come on, what’s even in the water!?” Remus complained, like he couldn’t imagine an ocean not filled to the brim with creatures that yearned for blood and bone.
“Fish! And seals and sea otters and starfish!”
“Mermaids?” Remus asked, and really Roman should know better than to treat his brother’s questions as anything but a potential trap.
“I could make some,” he replied, taking the bait. Remus grinned.
“Can they drown me?” Roman groaned and sped up to put some distance between them. Virgil looked up from his phone at the sound of quickening footsteps in the sand and decided to match his pace so he wouldn’t have to walk alone just because his brother was annoying.
The Prince had invited the other Sides to a relaxing day at the beach in the Imagination. This wasn’t a unique occurrence; Roman had been inviting the others to the Imagination since they were children. He’d created bouncy castles, jungle expeditions, magical playgrounds, petting zoos, and a myriad of other things for them to play in and explore. What was new, however…
Roman looked back to see Remus talking about something with Patton. Whatever it was, it was causing Patton to cover his ears and turn pale. He only stopped when a way-too-long arm snaked around to poke him on the back, and realizing he could bug someone else, turned to Janus to continue the conversation. If the snake happened to start walking slower than the rest, well Remus didn’t seem to notice. Their differing speeds caused them to walk less as a group and more as a line, like a roller coaster instead of a car.
“It would be rude to not include them,” Patton had insisted. And look, what fun he’s having now. It wasn’t like they hadn’t excluded them before. Excluding them used to be the standard.
They finally reached the shore. It was perfectly picturesque, gentle waves crashing into white sand dotted with shells ready for the taking. An ice cream shop, one eerily familiar to the one Thomas’ family used to go to when they went to the beach when he was a kid, sat a ways away, playing music just loud enough to hear but not so loud that it became annoying like mall music. The seagulls squawked in the distance, and unlike the real ones, they’d stay in the distance. Logan breathed in the lovely sea air, letting his shoulders slump as he felt the tension leave his body.
He then started searching his tote bag for something. After a few seconds of grabbing around, he pulled out an orange tube. He popped open the blue cap.
“Everyone needs to apply sunscreen. I expect you to return in two hours to reapply.”
“Oh come on, we’re not going to get mesothelioma from a fake sun!” Virgil protested. He hated applying sunscreen, there was always the chance of accidentally rubbing his eyes before he rinsed his hands off.
“The term you’re looking for is melanoma, and it has been shown time and time again that the environment of the Imagination has the ability to affect us.” While developing cancer was unlikely (that wouldn’t happen in Roman’s fantasyland), they had gotten sunburn on previous excursions. It was, unfortunately, too intrinsic to the beach experience to leave out.
Logan finished rubbing the lotion on the spots his wetsuit left uncovered and passed the tube to Virgil. He cringed, but begrudgingly took it. Being sticky was at least marginally better than getting lobsterback.
Patton took his bag off his shoulders and began to set out the beach chairs. Roman joined him to stick the umbrellas in the sand. After applying sunscreen, the two of them grabbed some plastic buckets and shovels and made their way towards the water. They had plans.
The teacher sighed and laid down on one of the chairs, making sure the umbrella properly shaded him before reaching into his bag and pulling out his book about echinoderms.
“What’s the point of the wetsuit if you’re not going to swim?” Janus questioned hypocritically, because he was also sitting in a beach chair despite wearing a bathing suit, piña colada in the hand that wasn’t propping his head up. Logan wasn’t sure where the drink had come from. The snake had explicitly refused to carry anything.
He wondered if he had another glass. Hydration is very important. That’s why.
“I might later. It’s just that this chapter on starfish is so fascinating. Did you know that they don’t have a brain?”
Janus hummed, a noise that acknowledged what he said but didn’t give the impression that he cared all that much. “Reminds me of some people I know.”
Meanwhile, Remus was sneaking up on Virgil, who was busy watching a crab scuttle around a small hill. It had blades of grass poking through the sand, and it cut off suddenly to create a mini cliff into the ocean. The crustacean danced between clumps of grass, snapping its claws like castanets.
The anxious Side knew how to swim. He even liked to swim. He just had to warm himself up to it, remind himself that shark attacks were rare and Roman didn’t know how riptides work and wouldn’t make them even if he did and that he wouldn’t get the bends from diving just a few feet. So he was sitting off to the side, waiting for his nerves to stand down.
Remus snickered impishly, the only warning Virgil had before he was shoved over the edge and into the salty water. He spit the nastiness out before glaring up at the Duke, who was peering down at him in turn, grinning.
“You’re an asshole.”
“Thanks, I try.” He then disappeared, giving Virgil a few fleeting moments of hope that he had left to pester someone else. That hope was soon dashed by the huge splash of Remus cannonballing recklessly close to him.
Janus took a long sip as he watched Virgil flick water at the Duke’s face, only to scream shrilly when Remus gave chase. He tugged his floppy sun hat over his eyes and leaned back.
Patton and Roman had been busy creating a sand castle for the past fifteen minutes, and they were making remarkable progress, probably because they were in a fantasy where wet sand doesn’t collapse at the slightest disturbance. Their goal was a tiny palace fit for tiny royalty. They had completed the main tower, with a strand of seaweed hanging from a carved out window like the locks of a trapped princess. They were now working on the battlements and the moat.
Roman took a scallop shell from the pile they had accumulated and pressed it over where the gateway would be if he was working with a more stable material. He’d need to see if popsicle sticks would work, once they ate them (the popsicle, not the stick). Patton was next to him, poking crenels into the sandy curtain wall. Once that was done, he took some pebbles and lined them up against the edge of the moat that probably didn’t actually add any structural integrity, while Roman took some twigs and poked them into the sand to act as the castle residents. He also placed a cone-shaped shell (not a cone snail, Remus could have all the venomous creatures on his side, he didn’t need to share) outside the wall to serve as a cannon.
“I don’t know, it’s missing a certain je ne sais quoi,” he concluded after staring at their creation for a moment, rubbing his chin in thought.
“Jenny said what now?” Patton asked cheerily. He knew full well what je ne sais quoi meant, but he was here to have fun. The Prince rolled his eyes, wanting to groan but finding that he wasn’t upset enough to do so.
The fatherly Side scanned the beach for whatever could complete their masterpiece. There was sand, more sand, a shell, even more sand, some washed up kelp, a lot more sand someone should get around to vacuuming, and ooh, score!
He plucked it up from where it was buried in the sand, only visible by how it caught the light at a certain angle, then held it up to present it to Roman. He beamed proudly when his friend’s face immediately became one of excitement.
“Great horseshoe huffing heffalumps, sea glass! Good find, Padre, it’s perfect,” he said as he took it from his hands to admire it better. It was a glittering white, and upon closer inspection, slightly translucent. He spent a while twirling it in his fingers, observing how it looked at all angles.
Now they just needed to find the right place for it.
Atop the tower was the obvious choice, right where everyone could see it. But that was too obvious, and furthermore might cause the structure to collapse. If only there was an interior for the castle, because it would have made a fantastic disco ball.
While they sat there pondering, Remus crawled onto shore like he was reenacting the late Devonian Period, creeping up to the beach chairs. Unaware of his presence, Logan continued spilling sea creature facts.
“Did you know that when threatened, sea cucumbers will eject their internal organs in a process called evisceration.”
“Doesn’t sound like an overreaction at all.”
“Sounds sexy!” Remus popped up, between them, causing them to both jump in surprise. How such a loud Side managed to sneak up on anyone was a mystery, one that Logan was planning to study and one that Janus had long given up on solving.
“The sea cucumber?”
“Anything can be a—”
“No, no they can’t!” Janus interrupted. He’d use his hand-slapping-over-the-mouth trick, but that never seemed to last long with Remus.
“See, Chamber of Sea Kraits agrees with me!”
“You are deliberately misinterpreting me,” he complained like he didn’t purposely speak in a way that made it difficult to tell when he was being sincere.
“Why are you here, Remus? Last I checked you were occupied swimming.” Swimming was a generous word for it. The Duke had spent the last five minutes pretending to be a drowned corpse. He was so close to getting that stiffness of a body that was only halfway into rigor mortis just right.
“Got bored.” It turned out letting yourself drift was a good way of constantly washing up on shore like a piece of driftwood. “Say, how do you feel about burying me?”
“Six feet under buried or make you into a mermaid buried?”
“I’d prefer a kraken but that works too.”
Virgil saw Patton and Roman waving to him and walked onto shore to see what was up. And what was up seemed to be a kickass sandcastle.
“How the hell did you guys make that?” he asked, because he was pretty sure sand couldn’t do that. He’d know it could actually do a lot more than he thought if he fell down an internet rabbit hole about sand sculpting.
“Blood, sweat, and tears, my frightful friend.”
“And buckets!” Patton added before motioning for him to take a closer look. Peering down into the bailey, he saw a small mandala design made of shells radiating from a piece of white sea glass.
“Woah, neat,” he said as he took in the details. Several of the twig people seemed to be dueling. “So, what are you gonna do now?”
Grabbing the closest item nearby, Patton held up a beach ball and answered, “Volleyball?”
“With three people?” Roman asked. It would be odd, but if the moral Side wished for it, he was perfectly happy to make a quick volleyball court.
“We could do three on three if we invited the others.”
“They seem a bit…busy,” Virgil pointed out, nodding over to where Janus and Logan were packing sand on top of Remus, steadfastly ignoring his suggestions to add a certain anatomical feature.
“Well how about a good ol’ game of catch with your old man,” Patton suggested, and that received nods all around. Since two of them had yet to enjoy the waters, they decided to play in the ocean, wading until waist deep and standing in a triangle formation. Despite only being ten or so feet away from each other, they spent half their time chasing after fumbled balls as they drifted away, the waves pulling the beach ball away every time they reached like the fruit branches above Tantalus.
The Sides stayed at the beach until the sun began to dip into the water, lighting it up gold as the sky was painted in peaches and tangerines. They then made their way back to the door to the Mindscape, ice cream from the shop in hand.
How hard could it possibly be, when he's the heir of the Most Noble and Ancient House of Black, is *almost* as good looking as his older brother Sirius, and has the Dark Mark to show his devotion to the Dark Lord? Regulus will soon find out that finding the perfect witch is harder than it looks when he's engaging in war crimes, studying for his N.E.W.T.s, and trying to win the Quidditch Cup. Then, it's damn near impossible when a baby shows up on his doorstep nine months after he loses his virginity (it was all a big misunderstanding, he blames Narcissa), and stumbles into the real world for the first time in his privileged life. closest with remus out of anyone. lived with him when she ran away. they were extremely codependent and didn't have an boundaries. james and dorcas accepted that they were a package deal
90s grungey style. a lot of flannel, ripped clothing, leather, patches.
violent. it was an unfortunate habit from her family. she would get very angry very fast and it transferred to violence, though she tried to never hit her friends and she NEVER hit dorcas.
had a running bet with remus over who would get their braces off first when they were thirteen. (she lost but says she won)
lots of tattoos. one of those people who didn't really have meaning for said tattoos. she just likes the look.
tons of piercings- about eight or nine in each ear, eyebrow, tongue, septum, nose.
musical lover. hope lupin introduced her to all her favorite musicals.
has dorcas saved in her phone as 'side-ho #1'. dorcas knows and loves it.
swears a lot. the marauders, valkyries + dorcas made a swear jar to stop her swearing so much.
jewish convert, conservative jew.
got with dorcas when she was eighteen. once they did get together, they were very close and very in love.
touchy with remus and dorcas. not with anyone else.
designer fr tho. she makes her own clothes and makes her friends' clothes, too.
smokes + she has a lighter with a dumb design on it from remus.
steals remus' clothes 24/7.
looms over people menacingly.
very severe adhd. has a habit of being distracting as shit, forgetting to eat, a hatred for certain sounds and feelings, and hates overhead lighting.
candles. all the candles.
knows how to shoot a gun and often does go to a shooting range.
part spanish and french, speaks both languages.
dyslexic.
will eat anything someone puts in front of her. from nachos to fajitas to escargot- she'll eat it all.
really strong. can lift about 450
trust issues.
hockey player.
multiple concussions.
partially deaf due to repeated head trauma from said concussions and abuse from her parents.
Dorcas
she's tiny, literally 5'0 on the dot and so she makes evan and marlene get her things on tall shelves.
gets really anxious sometimes and bites her nails because of it. pandora does complicated nail art on her nails so she feels bad biting them.
flexible as shit.
very feminine, which makes people assume she's straight.
makes her own jewelry and creates a small business of it at her high school. she makes a small fortune off her earrings.
big on romance movies, cries at them. loves horror movies, too, doesn't flinch.
resting bitch face, 100%
lives in a trailer with her dad. mom ran away when she was, like, two months old.
can play bass.
eyes so dark they're almost black.
has a tattoo on her wrist for her dad. it says 'i love you' but in his handwriting.
marlene left her hockey jersey at dorcas' place one day and now dorcas wears it to sleep.
loves to take pictures, has a lot of really embarrassing, weird photos of her friends, family, and marlene.
really good at baking, can back anything. god awful at cooking.
plant mom
fairy lights everywhere in her room.
at one point sold weed to help with the money at her place. now she does it for some extra money.
HUGE activist. got into a lot of trouble at school for it but then barty would be louder and more violent about her getting in trouble and cause a riot.
cold, all the time, no matter what.
big reader, bonded with regulus, lily, and remus over it.
atheist number one but will go to shul with marlene if she asks, specifically the high holidays.
farmer's markets, vintage festivals, and art stores are where she spends all of her money.
loves to paint but there's not enough room in her trailer so she paints outside while her dad reads beside her.
pineapple pizza is one of her favorite foods.
barty, evan, and dorcas hang out together and dye their hair with each other. regulus and pandora do not participate and hang out together elsewhere.
is super, super close with her dad and she tells him everything.
steals barty's clothing because she likes his style and men's clothing is more comfortable.
draws on her converse and marlene's leather jacket.
worships minerva mcgonagall. the art teacher.
scared of flying.
gave herself a lot of her own piercings.
Dorlene:
they have 'design dates' where marlene sits and makes clothes, and dorcas works on her jewelry/works on new art.
nauseatingly affectionate sometimes.
that one picture with the girl straddling the other one and doing her makeup. that's them.
flat is always super loud- marlene playing music and them dancing, working on their university assignments and their work.
marlene spends a lot of nights at dorcas' trailer and becomes best friends with her dad because of it.
marlene does bring donuts or coffee for them all the time.
shit talk people but in sign language.
dorcas comforts marlene during nightmares and marlene comforts dorcas during anxiety attacks.
never explained they were dating to their friends, one day just kissed goodbye and everyone just went with it.
marlene picks her up and carries her places (the doctor, cause dorcas is scared of the doctor and refuses to go)
dorcas bakes marlene cookies and muffins when she's sick.
dorcas cheers marlene on at all her hockey games, even though she finds hockey dumb.
dorcas takes marlene to vintage stores and markets and marlene always ends up carrying whatever dorcas buys.
marlene takes dorcas to shul with her on the high holidays and makes snide commentary about the people at her shul. dorcas tries learning hebrew to at least be able to follow along. doesn't work super well but marlene appreciates it anyway.
take turns deciding what movie go watch together. marlene likes action/adventure and dorcas loves a dorky romance movie.
marlene takes dorcas to italy to visit marlene's older brother. make solid plans to move there one day/honeymoon there.
road trip together with them and their friends.
can definitely do the dirty dancing lift.
had picnics on the balcony at their flat all the time. marlene used her candles to make it more atmospheric and dorcas' plants also helped.
kinda broke until marlene's fashion and designs hit it big.
femme x butch, fr tho.
dorcas used petnames all the time. marlene always got flustered and dropped what she was holding.
marlene learned how to style dorcas' hair, how to do braids and stuff like that so she could do dorcas' hair.
very in love, cutest couple ever, and kind of losers with each other.
Queerplatonic prongsfoot.
James and Sirius who were each other’s first kiss, and learnt the ropes of sex together, and still make out and have sex when they’re bored or horny or want to be close to each other sometimes, and sit in each other’s lap at all times.
Sirius who started seeing Remus and cried for days because that meant he couldn’t be like that with James anymore.
James who sat Remus down for a very long talk about boundaries, because he can’t have his best friend feeling like this, it’s a crime.
Regulus and Sirius who both love James too much to give him up, but also make him wash his mouth for five minutes straight before kissing either one of them after the other.
good morning i just woke up…. lets get into it..
lowkey agree with the whole prongsfoot thing, though they aren’t queerplatonic soulmates to me. they will always and forever be a secret third thing. childhood best friends, each others boyhood, adolescense, always feeling safe with each other, loving each other, experimenting together, so on and so forth. <- to me, the peak of their physical relationship were during their teenage years and it sort of fizzles out naturally as they grow up. not entirely, though. they’ll always teeter the line of platonic, always be deeply codependant in a way that their partners will just have to deal with. they’ve both been broken up over it several times
except for remus !! super special to me that remus is a bitter spitefully jealous person when it comes to sirius, but that just simply doesn’t apply to james. james is sirius’ soulmate, but remus is sirius’ choice. <- being chosen is the height of romance to me. i love you on purpose. i choose you every day. that’s wolfstar to me. i feel like if anything, it would be remus and sirius who would have to sit down and talk about james rather than james sitting remus down to like.. set boundaries in a relationship that’s not his. but either way, yeah, sirius and james always have to have to Talk with their partners. though not really with remus, because remus has also been their best friend for years, and remus knows them. he loves sirius, and a huge part of what makes sirius is james. never saw one without the other. and so remus would never really need or want boundaries.. <3 though.. i am not immune to wolfstarbucks.. 🤍
lastly.. as we all know… im not a jegulus girlie unfortunately.. but me and the couples comglomerate (lane, renn & kara) have been talking lately about a dark academia fucked up blackcest throuple with jock james. think talented mr ripley vibes where regulus is obsessed with the idea of james and sirius fucking, and regulus just can’t get it out of his head. he wants james because sirius chose him over regulus, wants him so sirius can’t have him, wants to be sirius so james will fuck him. regulus impersonating sirius because that’s what he’s been taught his whole life anyway. to watch and observe sirius, be compared to sirius, be less than sirius, always behind sirius, watching him. anyway this is my roundabout way of saying that regulus would refuse this supposed toothbrush because he wants to chase his brother off of james’ lips…:/ i think that if james is going to be involved with both black brothers we’re just gonna have to admit that it’s incestuous and weird no matter how often they brush their teeth <- reg would steal said toothbrush. btw .
💞 HP Soulmates: Fated 2 Be - Week 4 Roundup 💞
Tumblr media
Our penultimate week is now over — how time flies! Are you looking for a nice fic (or podfic!) to curl up with today? Here are all the soulmates works posted this past week for the fest:
💞 [FIC] Small Silver Linings 💞 (T, Severus/Hermione, 33k)
Three touches – that's what it takes to activate an ancient Merfolk binding magic, long forgotten in the wizarding world, and only applied to humans under rare circumstances. When Hermione Granger gets marked by the queen of the Merpeople during the Triwizard Tournament, she doesn't know that she is bestowed with the ability to recognize her soulmate. Quite unfortunate so, Severus Snape would rather pretend to be dead than face is insufferable soulmate. However, he had made the calculations without Hermione, who is not so easily discouraged.
💞 [FIC] unless you're choosing me 💞 (M, Draco/Ron, 31k)
A soulmate was a choice. It was two people deciding to spend the rest of their lives together, weathering any storm. That was a fact that Ron would hold as truth for the rest of his life. Even when the Unspeakables found a spell in some ancient text that tied soulmates together with a red cord and showed them a moment of their "true love". It was a hoax, he was sure of it. But no one else agreed, willing to upend their lives just because a stupid spell said so. Ron wouldn't have minded so much if it hadn't wrecked his.
💞 [PODFIC] Finders Keepers 💞 (T, Harry/Severus, 50 min)
Based on the fic by Lilian Severus Snape doesn't find a single thing until he's twenty. By that time, he has given up and ignores a young boy, when he arrives at Hogwarts.
💞 [FIC] Invisible String 💞 (G, Harry/Severus, 3.7k)
The first time Harry saw Snape's black eyes — him truly acknowledging Snape's existence beyond him being his mean professor — it was the night after Harry killed Professor Quirrell. He was dreaming and in his dreams he was screaming. Harry dreams of Severus over the years.
💞 [FIC] He’s already in me 💞 (T, Severus/Remus, 2.9k)
On the night of Dumbledore’s death, Lupin’s mark appeared.
💞 [FIC] Stories that end and begin 💞 (M, Tom/Harry, 4k)
Tom had been right. Now that he was in his fifth year at Hogwarts, he could state that Soulmates were a nuisance. With the exception of a few souls who could consider themselves lucky, most of them were forced to put up with people they despised and who would do no good for their future.
💞 [FIC] Sparks 💞 (E, Draco/Harry, 20k)
“I’m sorry,” Draco turned to him, “are we boring you?” Greg looked up. “No, I’m just hungry, and you’re taking far too long to just tell them that you and Potter are soulmates. Do you have to be this dramatic?” There was a moment of silence, before all hell broke loose. Harry didn't know soulmates existed until he was fourteen. He wasn't sure what he imagined it would be like, but he knew it wasn't this. But that's not to say he didn't like it.
💞 [FIC] i will love you even if the oceans turn to sawdust and the trees fall in the forest without anyone around to hear them 💞 (E, Narcissa/Lily, 60k)
Anything your soulmate draws on their skin appears on your skin. And the universe has a really fucked up definition of "drawing." The story follows Lily from childhood to early adulthood.
A Room with a View
Written for Day 8 of @prongsfoot-microfic march prompts
On AO3
_
Growing up is a bittersweet thing.
On one hand, Sirius is ready to spread his wings and see what the adult wizarding world has in store for him. He’s applied to a few jobs within the Ministry of Magic, but his heart isn’t in it. The politics are toxic in the Ministry - corrupt. Sirius wants no part in that. Unfortunately, the job market in the wizarding world revolves around the Ministry, and the most interesting job (Aurors, Runeologists, Curse-Breakers, unspeakables), but alas… corruption. Sirius will probably end up running his own private company, maybe as an inventor or something. He’s always been good at coming up with new magical devices.
On the other hand, growing up means letting go of Hogwarts. The school has been good to him. He met James. He met his other friends too, Peter, Remus, even Lily, but most of all James. Without James, Sirius would still be stuck at Grimmauld Place, or worse homeless. Without James, Sirius wouldn’t know what love feels like.
James looks up from the paper he’s reading, having spent the last few minutes circling parts with a muggle marker.
“What do you think of these?” He asks, shoving the paper under Sirius’ nose.
Flat-hunting.
It was fun at first, the prospect of starting his new life with James in a home they made, but they still haven’t found anywhere right. It’s frustrating. Sirius just wants to be moved in already. He wants to come home from work to find James cooking in the kitchen. He wants to decorate the living room together, paint smeared over James’ cheek. He wants to roll over in bed to find James watching him, a sleepy expression on his face, and no other roommates to bother them.
Sirius rolls his eyes and takes the paper from his boyfriend, ready to hate the options, but he eats his words almost immediately. The first two circled flats are all wrong, in the middle of nowhere and remind him too much of Grimmauld Place… but the third one? It’s perfect! It’s in central London. The brickwork is old but it’s bright, the rooms look well-lit from what he can tell, and it even allows pets! A bonus!
His face must give something away because James takes the paper back before entwining their fingers together. “I’ll write to them after breakfast tomorrow, see if we can get a viewing over the weekend. I’m sure McGonagall won’t mind giving us a pass to leave school for it.”
“Do you think they’ll wait until summer?” Sirius asks, frowning.
Adulthood might be new, but he’s pretty sure rented places look for a quicker sale. James just shrugs. “We can both afford to pay rent.”
That’s true. Hell, between the two of them, they probably can buy a large mansion without ever working a day, let alone rent a two-bedroom flat, even with London prices.
“Alright, we’ll view it,” Sirius agrees, but in his heart, he knows they don’t need to.
It’s already perfect.
Unfortunately for the sixth years the second week back in lessons didn't let up and the students were caught with an onslaught of work as heavy as the snow that had continued to fall since the weekend. And though she had tried Daisy couldn’t help but feel like her heart wasn’t quite in it. Of course she attended her lessons and did her homework as needed but there was no effort in it. Every essay or assignment was done to just over the minimum requirement and she allowed herself to shrink back in class, as if she was a fixture on the wall rather than a student. And to her surprise the teachers let her, all seeking too nervous to challenge her should she become upset, well, any more than normal given her recent circumstances.
Yet it wasn’t her school life she cared about but her social life which also seemed to have taken a hit with every single one of her friends suddenly busy. Marlene had taken to spending time with a new boy who had just transferred in from Beauxbatons for the rest of the year because his father worked at the ministry. And since they had added apparition lessons onto an already crippling workload Lily had become super anxious about homework and revision and was spending more time than ever squirrelled away with just her books, and occasionally Alice, who had also been fretting about work. Though admittedly it was mainly on Frank’s behalf since he was applying to be an Auror alongside good grades required an entrance exam which he was studying for day and night.
And as for the boys they had all but disappeared into thin air. Of course, they attended lessons and mealtimes but as soon as free time rolled around they weren’t to be seen for dust. Daisy had asked what they were up to but they had fed her what she knew were lies, telling her they were helping Remus recover, though he was mid-cycle, and going over Quidditch practices which were conveniently closed to spectators. Daisy knew they were up to something but she didn't have the heart to argue with them so most evenings she ended up alone in her dormitory.
It was where she was now having trudged upstairs following dinner which had ended with everyone giving their excuses to leave her. Whilst the boys had allegedly gone to the quidditch pitch, Alice and Lily had gone to the library, their invite to go and do charms homework declined by Daisy as she didn’t find it much more appealing than sitting alone, and Marlene hadn’t even joined them in the first place, favouring to sit at the Ravenclaw table with Pierre.
Now she was sitting on the floor of her bedroom surrounded by pillows and blankets as the sounds of soft rock floated from her record player. At least here she didn’t have to think about her feelings she could just let them happen, and so as the sounds of drums and the strumming of electric guitars echoed off the stone walls she found that tears fell from her uncontrollably and silent. She sat on the floor crying as her music player went through every song on the album until finally the needle let up and she was forced to open her eyes and come back to reality. The room seemed emptier once the music had stopped, her loneliness more engulfing with the absence of sound. Yet she didn’t feel like playing anything else, that would only risk being caught moping and she didn’t fancy having to explain herself so she wiped her eyes on her sleeve and packed her things away.
Once her record was tucked back in its box she pushed it and the record player under her bed yet as she did she felt her hand come across a carrier bag. Not knowing what it was she grabbed it, pulling it from where it was nestled beside her trunk, so that she could inspect it. She didn’t recall stuffing it under there yet as she undid the knot of the carrier bag and spotted the neatly wrapped packages inside she realised what it was, her Christmas presents.
She had completely forgotten about them. The last time she had seen them had been back at her house, all of them still in her suitcase where’d she put them, too sad to open anything on Christmas morning. Now it seemed Lily had taken charge of them hence why they had been safely stowed around under her bed. She pulled them out and looked at them. There was one from each of her friends and both of her sisters. And underneath all of them was a small one wrapped in bright red paper that had reindeer dotted all over it and her name was elegantly scribed on the tag.
Daisy, Hope Santa did okay!
Lots of Love Mum & Dad x
She ran her fingers across it hoping the feel of the writing beneath her touch would somehow connect them to her. As tears stung at her eyes once more she tilted her head, determined not to let any of them spill onto the card and smudge the ink. She held it for a moment weighing up whether it would be best to open it sooner rather than later though as she felt that familiar squeeze in her chest she found herself placing the small box down, opting to pick up a messily wrapped parcel from Peter.
After a few steady breaths she opened it, smiling as she pictured Peter trying to figure out what to get her before eventually landing on the calendar in hand which offered ‘Hexes, Jinxes and Curses of the day’. Petunia and ‘Vernon’ had gotten her a scarf, a replica of the one she’d seen Lily sporting, which she doubted she’d ever wear though it was nice to know that Petunia’s ‘get the twins the same thing although their two different people’ rule was still in play despite tragedy. Marlene and Alice had clubbed together to get her a voucher for the new wizard wear shop that had opened in Diagon Alley and Remus had bought her an ornately decorated journal which she couldn’t deny might come in handy given all the upheaval she was feeling. And as she opened Lily and James’ gifts she couldn’t help but wonder if they’d worked in tandem the albums she’d got from Lily, Fleetwood Mac and ABBA, matching the pair of headphones for her record player that James had bought her.
Finally, there were only two presents left. One from her parents and one from Sirius. Her fingers traced the paper of both wondering which to open first. Eventually she opted for her parent’s gift figuring it was going to hurt either way though that didn’t stop her from going slow, peeling the paper off a small ring box which she opened to find a small gold band inside, a small red stone set within it. She pulled it out of the velvet cushion and slid it onto her finger. Thankfully it fit even if it was a tad loose, not too much, but enough that she could fiddle with it. It looked nice on, pretty. Though as she went to shut the ring box she noticed the ring something, nestled in amongst the wrapping as if dislodged from inside the box, once hidden away. It was a piece of paper which she unfurled expecting to see her mother’s tidy handwriting except to her surprise she found herself looking at her Dad’s rushed print. A lump came to her throat.
My dearest Daisy,
I know you’re probably wondering what the hell your dear old dad is doing writing you a letter, thing is, I don’t really know either! Your mum does the talking for both of us most of the time but I figured if I was going to say anything it might as well be on your sixteenth Christmas, well fifteenth but mum and I knew we were complete even if it took you two another month to show up! Your mum figured we shouldn’t bother with a big birthday gift seeing as you won’t be spending it with us though personally I don’t see why we wouldn’t be allowed to pop up to sunny Scotland eh?
Instead, we figured getting you something big for Christmas was better so I hope you like it. If not blame your mum! This letter may be all me but your mum has done all the picking, buying, wrapping and what have you (apparently, I had one of two chances of guessing what your birthstone is and I got neither right! It’s garnet like your ring or emerald like Lil’s so I’m told. Petunia’s is Sapphire only so I’m glad your mother didn’t quiz me there, I’m 0 for 3 on my guessing)
Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that the past sixteen years we’ve had you girls have been the best of my life. Your mother and I are lucky to have three such wonderful kids. I know you girls are doing well at school, which I have to say comes all from your mother, and I’m happy that Petunia has found someone she loves and is embarking on a marriage and kids. Even if he does bore me silly about drills.
I don’t know why I felt the need to write this. I guess you almost dying on us last year got me all nostalgic for Christmas together or I’ve had too much sherry. Either way, no harm done. Hope you like your present and I guess this is sort of a Christmas and birthday card.
All my love, Dad x
Daisy’s eye’s scanned the page countless times taking in the words that she craved to imprint in her memory. She didn’t want to think about what her dad had been dwelling on when he wrote this, how scared they’d been over the Christmas she’d missed. No, she wanted to dwell on the words. That he was proud of her, that he loved her. And that was enough until she heard the sound of footsteps coming up the spiral staircase. She leapt into action, shoving all her belongings underneath her bed apart from the letter and the present she still had to open. Once they were hidden away she leapt into her bed and pulled her curtains closed listening with bated breath as the footsteps and sounds of talking came closer until she heard her dormitory door open. Lily and Alice’s voices could be heard talking about the last question on the charms homework they had just finished.
‘I don’t know,’ Alice said, ‘I think a concealment charm would count though.’ ‘I think that’s too risky,’ Lily said, ‘I mean you might as well, oh…’ ‘What?’ Alice asked. Daisy could hear her, standing by her bed, no doubt fumbling around her bedclothes for the pyjamas she’d discarded that morning. ‘I think Daisy and Mar have come up separately,’ Lily said approaching her sister’s cloaked four poster, as she whispered, ‘Dais?’
Daisy lay in the bed, the letter and present clutched to her chest, unmoving and not saying a word. Lily waited for a response and when none came she shrugged figuring her sister was asleep and therefore not replying. As Lily moved away, continuing her conversation with Alice albeit at a lower volume, Daisy allowed herself to breathe again, wondering why she had leapt into bed as she had. After all, Lily had opened her gifts she must have known what Daisy had. But in the same way Lily hadn’t broached the subject with her Daisy didn’t want to tell everyone what she had been looking at because that would allow the moment to be hers, just hers. And though her loss was joint with her siblings she didn’t want to share this last piece of her parents she had been given. So, she folded the letter neatly and placed it on her bed covers before she gently started unwrapping her present from Sirius.
The wrapping was basic, plain in colour with the tag saying no more than ‘To Dais from Padfoot’ but the book inside it was far from it. It was an old book, leather bound with intricate black etchings on the front and gold lettering down the spine that read ‘Tales of Beedle the Bard’. Daisy looked at it for a moment, trying to recall where she had heard that name before, wondering if she had heard her sister and Remus wittering on about it over the summer.
On the first page was a box that simply stated. THIS BOOK BELONGS TO followed by a name written in a child’s handwriting, larger than the space but still legible now, Sirius Orion Black.
As she turned the next page she found the title neatly written at the top of the page with a subheading below; first edition. Daisy smiled. It was coming back to her now, a conversation she and Sirius had had months ago. They had been talking about fairy tales and stories of their childhood. Daisy had told him about how her mother used to read to them every night, Petunia too for a spell seeing as she had learned to read before them. They’d grown up with Princes and Princesses and then it had transitioned to whatever Lily was reading as Daisy had forgone an interest in reading herself and her parents and Petunia had grown out of giving them a bedtime story. Sirius had told her how his mother had never shown an interest in a bedtime story instead opting to give him a book of wizarding fairytales and expecting him to see to himself. Kreacher, his house-elf, had taught him the basics and then a governess later on, and at night when his parents had left them to it in the multistorey house Sirius had snuck down into his brother’s room and read him stories from Tales of Beedle The Bard until he had fallen asleep which is when Sirius would creep back upstairs hoping not to be spotted by either of his parents.
It had made Daisy almost cry for him but he had assured her he didn’t care, not that she was sure she really believed him. Her sympathies hadn’t lasted long though as soon after bearing his soul they’d gotten into a debate about which were better, muggle or wizard bedtime stories. It’d gone on for a while, neither of them willing to back down, the topic only dying as he promised to show her the stories one day.
It looked like today was the day. Except the stories didn’t interest her at that moment, she was too focused on the message scrawled at the bottom in Sirius’ handwriting.
Dais, I don’t know if you even remember the conversation we had about this. I mean Remus has probably already bombarded you with a new copy anyway but whatever, hope you like it. Pads
P.s. even if you have got a copy you should like this one more, I stole it from my mother’s library for you before I left not that she’d notice. Even if you don’t like it I’m happy for you to flog it and buy something really muggle with it. She’d hate that.
As she read that last bit she suppressed a chuckled. Who could’ve thought that a present that came from a woman who loathed her existence could feel so good. For a moment she thought about reading it, to immerse herself in the young Sirius’ world but that would require use of a wand which would let her roommates know she was awake. And after all the emotions she’d been through this evening she didn’t quite have the energy for that and so she slipped that and the letter under her pillow hoping for an easy sleep.
✵✵✵
When Daisy got out of bed on Friday she was feeling a lot better than she had been at the start of the week because even if her friends hadn’t cheered her up her Christmas presents had. And though she hadn’t seen the boys, Lily or Alice she had managed to spend an evening with Marlene whose new beau had decided to enrol in Gobstones club much to her annoyance. They had spent the evening listening to Daisy’s new albums and talking about her friends’ new romance which was nice for Daisy, another escape from the feelings that had been overwhelming when alone.
‘Have we got an apparition lesson today?’ Daisy asked with a yawn, fiddling with her tie. ‘Yeah after lunch,’ Lily said eyeing her sister with disapproval as she added, ‘haven’t you been revising?’ ‘What’s to revise?’ Daisy said. ‘It’s a very important skill,’ Lily reprimanded. ‘You disappear in one place you reappear in another and try not to get cut in half in the meantime,’ Daisy shrugged, leaning down to slip her shoes on though as she fiddled with the buckle her ring slipped from her finger, hitting the stone floor with a metallic tinkle. Lily, who had been watching her sister closely, watched as she picked up the gold band and slipped it back onto her finger.
‘You opened your presents,’ Lily said, not quite stating a fact but not accusatory either. At her words Daisy’s eyes snapped up, landing on her sister’s freckled face before they dropped to her ring, her tone apprehensive as she said, ‘what? Oh yeah…I um, found them the other day…figured it was time to open them.’ ‘Are you okay?’ Lily asked immediately. Daisy looked at her sister once more finding worry in her twin’s eyes, evidently, the fear that her sister was going to break down at any moment was still going strong. ‘Yeah,’ Daisy lied reiterating with more force as her sister’s stare turned sceptical, ‘yes Lily I’m fine. Besides it wasn’t as if it was a horrible thing to find actually it was kind of nice.’ ‘They’re lovely rings aren’t they,’ Lily said her hand going to a chain around her neck, one that Daisy hadn’t noticed her sister had been wearing but now as she looked she could see a thin silver chain with her sister’s matching ring around it. As Daisy looked at her confused Lily said, ‘it fits I just didn’t want to upset you if…’ ‘I saw what mum and dad got us,’ Daisy finished. Lily shrugged as though it was barely a thought she’d had but Daisy knew she was probably right to do so. That if she’d have seen her gift even a week ago it probably would’ve sent her into a spiral. Thinking about it now made her stomach swirl with sadness which she elected to push out, saying, ‘I think you had the right idea anyway. Mine’s a little loose and it keeps slipping off I might put it on my chain.’ ‘Good idea,’ Lily said with a smile.
After that the pair continued to dress in silence until they were ready to head downstairs for breakfast only they didn’t get very far as once in the common room they found Remus and James waiting for them, their quiet chatter stopping as they appeared from the stair well.
‘Morning Evanses,’ James said with a smile, his head flopping over the back of the settee so that he was looking at them upside down. Remus rolled his eyes and said, ‘morning.’ ‘Morning,’ the girls replied, Daisy adding, ‘what’s got you so chipper?’ ‘It’s defence club day,’ James said as if it was self-explanatory. ‘So?’ Daisy said, poking his glasses down his nose which caused him to swat at her hand, leaping up so he was kneeling on the couch facing them. ‘Let me guess,’ Lily said, ignoring the childishness of the pair of them as she said, ‘you got some big cool spell you want to show off?’ ‘Me? Show off?’ James said feigning aghast, ‘how dare you, Lily!’ ‘Go on then, why are you all excited?’ Daisy probed, her eyes narrowing. James smirked, sharing a look with Remus before he leaned in and said, ‘now that would be telling.’ ‘Oh come on,’ Daisy grumbled as he leapt up of the couch, grabbing his school bag as he headed towards the portrait hole, the others rushing to follow him. ‘Sorry,’ James chuckled. ‘You’re really not going to tell us?’ Lily asked, more intrigued than she cared to admit. ‘You’ll just have to wait and see,’ James winked and before they could question him further he dove into a story about a jinx he had been learning for the club but had yet to perfect. It wasn’t enough to completely spark out her curiosity but Daisy let it yield for the time being, too busy enjoying having her friends around her for the time being especially as James explained his attempts had caused his target [Peter] to end up with duck feet every time he tried. ‘I’ve always thought he had sort of a waddle to his gait,’ Remus chuckled. They were in the great hall by now, taking a seat next to Alice and Frank who were going over Auror Exam practice questions but waved nevertheless. ‘No he’s definitely rat-like,’ Daisy said, waving at her friend’s before looking back at the boys as she asked, ‘anyway where is the waddled one? Or Sirius for that matter?’ ‘Um,’ James faltered, the look he gave Remus no more than a second but still enough for her to clock, ‘gob stones meeting.’ ‘And Sirius?’ Daisy said knowing that they weren’t technically lying but it would only be Peter who was there. ‘He didn’t say,’ Remus shrugged as he poured milk into his cup of tea. Daisy nodded pretending as though their dancing around the subject was normal rather than sparking that curiosity in her ten-fold.
Yet as they started another conversation she poured herself an orange juice, her mind only on Sirius. She knew they were up to something, all of them, and yet it was him that bothered her the most. Him who she was missing the most. Everyone seemed to be convinced they were meant to be but just when she thought he might like her, he’d pulled away leaving her at more of a loss than ever.
That was what she liked about Michael. She didn’t like him the way she did Sirius, not by any means, but he was a nice guy and if nothing else he’d been upfront about liking her. He’d even asked if she wanted to go to Hogsmeade together. She’d declined though only because she didn’t see the point given she’d only be doing it to see if she got any reaction from Sirius and he’d paid her so little attention that day in the attic she doubted he’d even notice her on a date with someone or worse, not care.
And she wanted him to care. She wanted him to spend time with her instead of avoiding her because being with him made her feel safe. Whenever she thought of him she thought of warmth. Around him she was herself, comfortable, open and honest and not pretending to be okay if she didn’t want to. The only problem was that she didn’t have any choice in what he did or who he saw. She couldn’t dictate him be with her all the time, even if she wanted to.
As the other three at the table chattered away Daisy pretended to listen while dutifully shovelling her breakfast down and when she was done she followed Lily to their first lesson of the day, double potions. It wasn’t a great start to the day, what with Professor Slughorn opting to give them a challenge with a complex potion as the objective, but fortunately Daisy didn’t have to do much of anything as they were allowed to work in pairs with Lily doing all the heavy lifting while she was tasked with running to the store cupboard every so often. The only problem with taking a back seat however was that she found herself thinking more and more about Sirius, meaning that the ache in her chest refused to disappear until she was placed in her transfiguration lesson, somewhere she had to concentrate given that if anyone wasn't going to let her slack off it was Professor McGonagall. She didn’t even allow her to as the final bell tolled signalling lunch, her nasal Scottish voice calling her name as Daisy crammed her belongings into her book bag as quick as she could. Daisy sighed but bid her friends goodbye anyway watching as they all left before she turned and walked to the front of the room where her teacher was waiting.
‘Something wrong Professor?’ Daisy said as the last few stragglers left the class. ‘No, well not exactly,’ Professor McGonagall said as she put a piece of parchment down on the desk in front of them both. Written on the top of the piece of parchment was an A- Acceptable. ‘Is that-’ ‘Last week’s homework assignment,’ McGonagall said, her gaze scrutinous as she continued, ‘and whilst this is an okay grade and still a pass this is not the level of work I’ve come to expect from you.’ ‘Professor,’ Daisy mumbled though she didn’t know what point she was trying to make. Not that McGonagall seemed to care as he continued to chastise her, ‘you’re far more capable than this. Don’t you think?’ ‘Yes Professor,’ Daisy said though she wasn’t sure what she wanted any longer. ‘Then you’re going to need to improve your grades in this class as well as others. From what I’ve heard from other teachers your grades are slipping there as well and why I know why I can’t help but worry. You’re better than this Daisy,’ McGonagall said. ‘I know Professor it’s just been a bit hard is all,’ Daisy said, feeling tears sting in her eyes which McGonagall seemed to notice too, sighing as she said, ‘I understand but I just can’t stand by and not mention it. You deserve to make yourself proud…your parents too. Don’t you think?’ ‘Yes Professor,’ Daisy mumbled, the tears now accompanied by a lump in her throat. McGonagall smiled softly, ‘well then let’s try a little harder next time.’ ‘Right,’ Daisy said, barely giving her teacher time to dismiss her before she was fleeing for the door as fast as her legs could carry her. She was down three flights of stairs before she even looked up from her feet the tears finally subsiding and her vision becoming clear.
And as she looked up she spotted a familiar sight at the end of the corridor. Sirius. He was leaning against the wall one foot resting against it, his arms crossed across his chest. He was chuckling away, his eyes glinting in the sunlight that was just barely coming in through the hallway window, and in front of him was Penelope Fulton, laughing along with him, her hand resting on his folded arms as if propping herself up to stop herself from keeling over with laughter. Daisy’s heart sank.
‘So this is where he’s been,’ she thought, that ache in her chest returning. She had wanted to believe they were up to something, the four of them together. She had wanted to believe that whatever it was would be worth it in time and yet now she worried that wasn’t the case. She worried that while she’d been missing him, lonelier than ever, he’d been continuing his romance, the thing he’d protested was just a date now actually more. It made her feel sick. He didn’t spot her and so she decided not to reveal herself and instead walked the long way round to the dining hall, that sick feeling never leaving as he never joined them for lunch.
✵✵✵
For the rest of the day Daisy was in a grim mood so much so that she debated whether or not to duck out of Defence Club, her decision to go only made when she realised the barrage of questions she would get from her sister if she didn’t. After dinner Lily, Daisy, Alice and Frank headed towards the attic for the meeting yet just as they made it to the entrance hall they heard someone shout for them and found James, Peter and Remus rushing to catch up with them.
‘Wait for us!’ James hollered, catching the group first and throwing himself in the middle, his arms going around Alice and Frank. ‘Alright mate,’ Frank chuckled, shoving him off. ‘Better now you’ve waited for us,’ James replied just as Remus and Peter caught up, evidently not in as much of a hurry as the other boy. Daisy scanned the ensemble, looking for a familiar pair of grey eyes yet she found none, the only gaze she caught being Remus’ who smiled at her. She returned it weakly. ‘I thought you said going in small groups was more inconspicuous,’ Lily challenged, raising an eyebrow. ‘Well, what’s the damage now Dumbledore knows?’ James smiled. ‘He’s got a point there Lil,’ Frank said. To everyone’s surprise Lily didn’t challenge them, instead opting to start talking, albeit in hushed whispers, about how excited she was to resume the club. Everyone bar Daisy shared her sentiments, her chest still aching at the idea of having to attend.
It didn’t let up one ounce as they made their way up to the attic, meeting Marlene and Pierre on route, in fact it only grew worse at they made their way up to the stone staircase, finding Sirius and Penelope already waiting for everyone on the landing outside the door. Fortunately for Daisy she didn’t have to question her being there as Marlene was like a rottweiler, her tone light but her eyes menacing as she said, ‘what’s Penny doing here?’ as if she wasn’t in the room. ‘She asked if she can join I said she could,’ Sirius said purposefully not looking at Daisy. ‘And if I like it I thought I could bring my brother and a friend along. If that’s okay of course,’ Penny said, looking to the group for approval. A litany of awkward smiles faced her. Well, all apart from Frank who earned himself a small dig in the ribs from Alice as he said, ‘of course it is. More the merrier and all that.’ ‘Great,’ Penelope said awkwardly. ‘Yeah, yeah great,’ Lily said earning a snort from James who replied, ‘not boring are we Evans?’ ‘No,’ Lily glared, ‘I was just wondering why we are conducting club business outside the safety of the club? Why didn’t you just go inside? ‘Ah, well about that,’ Sirius said, joined in ranks by James whose teasing was over as he said, ‘the thing is after we cleared out the space the boy and I did some thinking.’ ‘What kind of thinking?’ Marlene asked sceptically. ‘That Lily had a point about making it comfortable,’ Sirius explained. ‘Yeah so we decided to do a little decorating,’ James added. ‘Oh good god, what have you done?!’ Lily asked panicked. ‘Nothing bad,’ James said quickly, ‘well, at least we hope not.’ ‘I’d say it’s flipping brilliant!’ Peter said, joining them from the crowd. ‘Me too,’ Remus agreed from the back of the crowd. ‘Well then don’t keep us waiting,’ Frank said, earning smiles from the boys as they moved to the door and opened it.
Oohs and aahs echoed off the walls as the troupe filed in, taking in the newly transformed room. Whilst they had elected to leave the majority of it bare for practicing, the crash mats and cushions stacked up in a neat pile to one side, the edges of the room housed things that hadn’t been there before. The wall that wasn’t littered by posters, of defensive spells and muggle rock bands, was lined by a couple of bookshelves, the contents they’d decided to keep from the boxes displayed across them. And in the back of the room was what looked like a common room. There were a couple of desks with several chairs around and across from them three couches which formed sort of its own section. There was a record player in the corner currently playing some soft rock on low and in front of the couches was a coffee table, littered jugs of pumpkin juice and plates of sandwiches. It was perfect.
As people walked around the room the boys stayed put watching closely. James in particular watching Lily, who looked awestruck as she ran her fingers across the bookshelf, not looking up as she said, ‘guys this is…’ ‘This is amazing!’ Alice squealed, Frank nodding in agreement as they took seats on the couch. ‘Thanks,’ James said. ‘Did you do all of this?’ Pierre asked the boys impressed. James shrugged, ‘it was a team effort.’ ‘Well it looks great,’ Marlene smiled, following Pierre as he gestured for him to join her by the record collection. James watched everyone excitedly, his gaze going back to Lily as she approached, confusion on her face as she asked, ‘how did you do all this?’ ‘Well a lot of furniture came from the room of requirement,’ James explained. ‘You’ve found to the room of requirement?!’ Lily asked agog. ‘Well, it kinda found us,’ James admitted. ‘Wow,’ Lily said with awe, ‘I bet it wasn’t easy getting everything up here.’ ‘It’s nothing,’ James lied, ‘if anything it’s like Hogwarts wanted us to do it.’ ‘Feels like that doesn’t it,’ Lily smiled, adding with earnest, ‘this really is amazing. Thank you.’ ‘Like I said it was a team effort,’ James smiled.
Having allowed them to have a moment in private Remus and Peter had moved away from the pair, joining the others who were now crowded around the seating area. Sirius however didn’t migrate that way, instead drifting towards where Daisy was standing on her own, looking up at some of the posters on the wall though she looked towards him when she felt a presence beside her. Sirius smiled but she didn’t reciprocate it, unable to stop herself as she stated, ‘so, this is what you’ve been up to all week.’ ‘Yeah,’ Sirius said, nerves in his stomach at the lack of greeting though he explained anyway, ‘James wanted to keep it a surprise so.’ ‘You lied to me,’ Daisy accused, taking him by surprise. ‘Dais it wasn’t a lie,’ Sirius rebutted. He had sensed her being miffed at being left out but he’d figured she’d understand once she knew why they were doing it. And never in a million years had he thought she’d see it as lying. ‘You left me on my own,’ Daisy said, hurt he hadn’t expected in her voice. Upon hearing it not only guilt but confusion swirled inside him, leaving him unable to fathom how the idea he’d had to cheer her up seemed to be going so awry. He hadn’t meant to leave her out but it’d only been because he wanted to surprise her, nothing else. ‘We wanted it to be a surprise,’ he said softly, begging her to see his side as he said, ‘Dais we’ve been up here day and night.’ ‘When you weren’t with Penny of course?’ Daisy replied. It was quiet but cutting and Sirius tried to replied but her accusation had come out of the blue and he was tripping over his words and didn’t manage to reply before Daisy said, ‘thought so.’
And with that, she disappeared towards the throng of people, leaving him standing there at a loss for words. After that he didn’t get chance to speak to her as she kept her distance allowing at least three people to fill the space between them at any given time which became easier the more people that arrived. Not only that but given it was her first meeting he was charged with getting Penelope informed whilst the others recapped what they had done before Christmas.
It was a crash course for Penelope but after an hour or so of practice she seemed to be up to speed and she and Sirius were able to join the group that had gathered around on the couches, going through a list of spells and jinxes they’d each been researching and thought might be worthwhile. Lily and Remus of course had a list each with the others offering a couple extras here and there including a few requests from Frank who asked from some auror spells he needed to practice to be added too, earning a shiver of excitement from the room. As yawns started becoming more frequent, the come down of excitement combined with the amount of food they’d eaten hitting everyone at once, the list was completed and stuck up on the wall ready for further meetings and everyone started to pack up. Alice and Frank left first followed by Marlene and Pierre.
‘Tonight’s been awesome,’ Rudy Scrimgeour said as he and his friends left. ‘I’m gonna see if some of the girls want to come if that’s okay?’ Eleanor Vane said. ‘Absolutely!’ Lily called from where she was tidying away book and rubbish that had been left by everyone. ‘The more the merrier,’ James echoed as he helped her. They were some of the only people left now with Remus and Daisy chatting to Peter about his Gobstones tournament and Sirius was talking to Penelope by the door before she headed out. Once she had gone he turned, watching as Daisy pretended not to notice him, placing herself on the opposite side of the group as they headed out too now that everything was tidy. He watched her the entire way not bothering to join in with the conversation or even notice that Lily and James had lagged behind meaning that when they got to the common room the pair where nowhere to be seen. ‘Where are they?’ Remus said as they walked into the deserted common room. ‘I don’t know,’ Peter said, peeking down the alley to the portrait hole only to find it had closed behind him. ‘I thought the sound of fawning had faded,’ Sirius joked earning a chuckle from everyone but Daisy whose eyes were icy whenever they landed on him. It irked him, the way her attitude had been doing all night. Surely she knew he hadn’t meant for them to hurt her? Surely she could understand that they, he, had wanted to do something nice for her. And whatever she thought about Penelope well he could explain that if she’d just let him. Before Sirius could say anything to her though Lily and James appeared through the portrait hole.
‘Where have you been?’ Peter asked innocently. ‘Nowhere, we were just talking,’ Lily said, her face beetroot red even in the low moonlight. ‘Yeah,’ James mumbled though he appeared in a daze. ‘Anyway ready for bed Dais?’ Lily said, her attention solely on her sister as if that would reduce the flaming in her cheeks. Daisy eyed her suspiciously and then said, ‘I’ll be up in a minute.’ ‘Right,’ Lily nodded, ‘night then everyone.’ ‘Night,’ the boys called watching as Lily dashed up the stairs and out of sight at record speed. The moment she was out of ear shot Daisy’s suspicious gaze landed on James who was still watching the space she had vacated but snapped out of it as the blonde asked, ‘what have you done?’ ‘Nothing,’ James said wincing as the back of Daisy’s hand hit his bicep, ‘honestly! We were just talking and well…I sort of asked her out.’ ‘When don’t you?’ Sirius snorted. ‘True but she sort of said yes,’ James said sheepishly. ‘What?!’ came the reply from all. ‘Wait you’re going out?’ Remus said, ‘when?’ ‘Next week. We’re allowed to Hogsmeade for Burns Night remember,’ James said. ‘Well, I can’t believe it. Well done mate,’ Peter said. ‘Yeah, I’m happy for you,’ Sirius said. ‘Me too,’ Remus agreed. As the celebrations died down all eyes fell on Daisy who had remained unusually quiet. Knowing how long he had liked her and how much Lily liked him despite her protestations she wanted to congratulate him but for some reason it wouldn’t come. For some reason the idea of them made that ache in her chest return.
‘Well, Dais? Do I get your blessing?’ James said, her silence bringing him down from the heights he’d been on at a remarkable speed. The others too felt apprehensive at the awkward silence, Sirius’ irritation turning to worry as he watched her force a smile and say, in a voice that didn’t sound quite right, ‘of course you do. Anyway I best get to bed.’ ‘Oh? I thought we could-’ James started but she didn’t wait. Instead she cut him off mumbling ‘night’ before she raced up the stairs and into her dormitory. Alice and Marlene weren’t back when she got inside and from what she could hear Lily was in the bathroom, a fact Daisy was thankful for. Pretending to the boys she was happy was one thing but Lily would no doubt be able to sniff out the truth and she didn’t want to hurt her like that. So Daisy stripped out of her clothes and climbed into bed. As she lay there her mind raced about everything.
She hadn’t meant to be mean to Sirius, to push him away, but he hadn’t been honest with her. He’d pretended he’d spent his time with the boys when she knew different. More to the point he’d left her alone. He’d promised to help her through her grief, be there for her, only to disappear at the chance of a good time. That had hurt her. And what hadn’t expected was for Lily to do the same thing. For her to be there for her until she had someone else. And what was worse was that she was expected to be happy for them, how could she not be? How could she not celebrate her sister and James’ relationship? How could she not want Sirius to be happy even if it wasn’t her he chose to be happy with. That’s what hurt her more. That was what that ache in her chest was - love. Love for those who couldn’t love her back anymore.
And as that pain enshrouded her she fell back, tears falling down her face onto her pillow, whilst she pretended to sleep.
Mark of Fate
Mark of Fate https://ift.tt/5daqEe1 by drcmione Hermione Granger was kind, she was brilliant, and angelic. But she's also strong, unrelenting, and reckless. Draco Malfoy was vile, he was cruel, he was cowardly. But he's also smart, he's cunning, and he too, contrary to people's belief, is capable of love. The string of fate had become a rare occurrence in the wizarding world, leaving one percent of the population to have a soulmate. A sodding boy and a stubborn girl had come to an unfortunate realization that they were, indeed, a part of that one percent. When Draco Malfoy found out that the girl he was taught to hate borne the sun mark identical to his own, he was left with a devastating decision.
