Notes: I only cried three times writing this.
No but seriously I can't believe it's finished but I can believe I've talked myself into continuing it. I'll be doing oneshots following on like glimpses of Daisy's life following this up to well after the second war. Also I refuse to do my boy dirty so he's getting his happy ending lol

Daisy didn’t know why she had come, what random force had tugged at her to leave her flat and apparate here but she had, forgoing the voice in her head that told her it wasn’t safe because the feeling in her gut was enough.
And she had been right.
Given the gargantuan manor James Potter had grown up in one would expect his own family home to be of a similar stature but following the passing of both his parents he’d found manors and mansions too empty and unfeeling and so he and his new bride had bought a quaint Tudor style house in Godric’s Hollow complete with a picturesque front garden for their future children to play in. Daisy remembered the first time she had clapped eyes on it, how beautiful and perfect she had thought it to be. She and Lily planned on barbecues in the back garden, an inherently muggle invention the boys were enthralled to get involved with. She thought of hot chocolates by the open fire in the living room on Christmas Eve with everyone sleeping over because no one dared miss Harry’s first holiday. She thought of the swing set she’d bought her nephew, still unopened somewhere in the shed because her sister had decreed him far too young to have it yet and that his godparents ought to know better. She thought of her home away from home. Only now it didn’t resemble the beautiful home she’d come to know. Now it lay in ruins, the front of the building eviscerated strewing rubble and debris over the manicured front lawn and with it she could smell something wretched. The pungent air of thick magic. The smell of death.
And just like that house in front of her she felt her world implode. She had known there was a reason for that feeling in her gut. She had known there was something tugging her forward but she had hoped she’d been wrong.
‘No,’ she whispered as reality started to settle in, ‘no, no, no! Lily! Lil!’
She started to run, barrelling towards the front gate as her mind chanted at her that it was going to be okay. Maybe they got out, maybe they’d been lucky and managed to escape, she reasoned. If anyone could, it'd be Lily. Her practical and perfect sister, she’d know what to do. She’d manage to escape.
She didn’t even check her surroundings as she’d been taught to, the need to get to her family all consuming, which was why she was startled as strong arms wrapped around her pulling her into the familiar scent of cigarettes and leather.
‘Dais,’ Sirius said hoarsely, ‘Dais you can’t.’ ‘Let me go! Lil!’ she shouted, fighting against her boyfriend as he struggled to keep hold of her. ‘Dais they’re gone,’ he whispered, finally grabbing her wrists and pulling him to face her. He looked awful, his normally happy features barren of life and his eyes red from crying, ‘they’re both gone.’ ‘No, they can’t be,’ she whispered as the tears started to build, wet and warm as they rolled down her cheeks. How could they be gone? How could her sister, her other half be gone?
‘How, I don’t understand,’ she said, her breath coming quicker and quicker though it felt as though she couldn’t breathe at all. The only other time she’d ever felt like this was when they’d lost their parents, as if someone had squeezed all the air out of her, all the life out of her. Sirius didn’t say anything and just pulled her into his chest, allowing her to sob as the information settled in.
None of it made sense. They were supposed to be safe; Dumbledore had promised her he would keep them safe. Hadn’t that been the reason for all the spells and enchantments? The lockdowns and restrictions? The secrecy? Hadn’t that been why they were living through hell? Stolen moments coming every few weeks, so far apart that whenever she saw her nephew he was half a size bigger or had some new development she didn’t even get to enjoy because it wasn’t safe for anyone to visit for long.
Harry.
Her poor sweet Harry. How could he be so young and yet the target for the most powerful wizard to ever live? How did he, at a great sum of fifteen months ever stand a chance? How could Voldemort ever think that power could be worth this.
How could she still hear his disgruntled cry, the one he got whenever Lily was more than a room away. Daisy was still buried deep in Sirius’ chest, his arms wrapped tightly around her but she pulled back, her snotty, red face confused at the noise. She’d been so consumed when she’d gotten here she hadn’t bothered to check the area but looking past Sirius she found his bike sitting not so far away and Hagrid standing beside it, his own face ruddy, but more importantly with a small tot nestled into his arm.
Harry Potter was alive.
And Daisy didn’t waste any time rushing to make sure her eyes weren’t deceiving her. He had been on the verge of crying but upon seeing her he settled, clinging to her just as tightly as she did him, resting her cheek on his head as a fresh wave of tears flooded her. Yet these were of relief.
‘What happened,’ she said, finally getting a hold of herself to look at Hagrid and Sirius for answers, ‘I don’t understand.’ ‘Don’t know,’ Sirius said blankly, his grey eyes dull, ‘I don’t understand how.’ ‘When I got here the house was like tha’ and James and Lily wer’,’ Hagrid started though a sob rumbled through him at the mention of their names. Sirius cleared his throat, somehow able to take over from the half-giant even though his loss was arguably more consuming. ‘He’s hurt. He’ll need to go to Dumbledore to be checked over to make sure he’s safe,’ Sirius said flatly, moving towards her and moving the thick mop of jet-black hair from Harry’s brow to reveal a thick gash on his forehead. It was obvious it had been cleared of blood but she could feel an aura radiating from it, it was a magical wound, that’s why they hadn’t healed it. Was this how he survived? The cost of living?
‘Right,’ Daisy mumbled. ‘Dais,’ Sirius said, tearing her eyes from the gash back to those flat grey eyes, ‘Voldemort’s gone but that doesn’t mean he is safe. He needs to go to Dumbledore.’ ‘Okay, yeah okay,’ Daisy said, her senses finally starting to make an appearance. Sirius was right. As broken as they were feeling they still had a job to do. Keep Harry safe. That had been what they’d been doing since the day he was born, what James and Lily had made them promise to do when he’d asked them to be godparents. ‘And you have to take him,’ Sirius said quietly. At that Daisy faltered, her brow furrowing as she looked at him. He looked away, shifting under her scrutiny which didn’t reassure her at all. ‘What?’ was all she could ask. ‘You need to-’ ‘What about you?’ she asked, that pit she had felt in her stomach before she’d come returning only now it was a chasm. One that put a lump in her throat and made her head spin with worry. ‘I have to go,’ Sirius said flatly. ‘Go? Go where?!’ she demanded, wiping the tears that were returning as she tried to keep her mind focused. ‘Dais,’ he sighed, swallowing thickly. ‘You can’t just leave!’ she protested but he didn’t seem to be hearing her. Whatever was in his head taking over as he shut everything down.
‘Go with Hagrid, take Harry to Dumbledore. Take the bike,’ he said firmly though he still refused to look at her, his focus on Harry as he tucked a finger under the baby’s pudgy chin, earning a considerably gummy smile in return. Sirius smiled back weakly at his godson. ‘Pads,’ she whispered, unable to wrap her head around what was happening. ‘Look after him, yeah?’ he asked, tears rolling down his cheeks when he finally looked at her. He couldn’t believe he was doing this, leaving like this, leaving her when he knew she needed him. He needed her too, like he always did, but there was something he had to do first, no matter the cost.
‘Sirius what are you talking-’ ‘Dais I love you,’ Sirius whispered, moving his hand to her cheek. The skin was wet against his hand but he didn’t care. After all he wasn’t sure the next time he’d feel the touch of her again, ‘no matter what happens I need you to know that.’ ‘Pads,’ she breathed shakily, panic mounting by the second. ‘And I’m sorry,’ he whispered. ‘Sirius please,’ she begged, ‘you can’t go. You can’t leave me-’ ‘Remember that,’ he said leaning in to press a kiss to her forehead. Harry whined at the intrusion, reaching to grasp at Sirius’ necklace but he detached him, kissing his chubby hand before he pushed him away and moved out of their grip. ‘Sirius,’ Daisy said, attempting to follow but he pushed her away glancing at Hagrid to intervene. He was behind her in a couple steps, wrapping his large arm around her and Harry and stopping her from moving after him. Once they were anchored he turned around, wiping the tears from his cheeks as he walked away as if not being able to see her would stop them from coming. It was never going to work, not when he could still hear her pleading, ‘no! Hagrid let go! Let me, Sirius! Sirius, what are you doing, Hagrid please!’
And then he was gone, disapperating with a loud crack leaving the lane quiet and eerie. Only then did Hagrid let her go, watching her with a sad smile as she turned around unable to get a grip on what had just happened. Not that she had time to as Hagrid muttered, ‘he’s in Hogsmeade. Dumbledore that is. It’s a long way but ‘e’s right, the bike’s probably the safest way t’go.’
‘Right, yeah,’ Daisy mumbled numbly. ‘He’ll know what to do,’ Hagrid promised, gesturing for Daisy to hand Harry over so that she could climb into the sidecar of the motorbike. She went through the motions, settling into the seat though her mind was miles away. Not even when he handed Harry over did she snap out of it, millions of thoughts whizzing around in her brain. Thankfully she had plenty of time to think about them.
✵✵✵
The flight to Hogsmeade was a long and cold one because even though it was nightfall Hagrid stayed well up in the cloud to avoid being seen. And for the most part it was dark save for the glow of the waning moon and the glint of street lights as towns came and went below them. On a normal ride like the ones she and Sirius used to go on back when he’d first gotten the bike she’d be craning her neck to look at the colourful coast lines or vibrant dales as they passed by. When it was warm she’d stay in the side car but on cold nights like this she’d take to the back of the bike, wrapping herself around him, listening to the thud of his heart and the thrum of the engine, content as ever.
At this moment in time she wasn’t sure how she could ever have felt content. She wasn’t sure how she’d ever felt anything before, anything that wasn’t this dark rotting ache inside her. She couldn’t even say what it was. Sadness didn’t even seem to cover it; it didn’t feel like that held enough weight.
Because how could she describe the loss of James and Lily? She’d felt at a loss when her parents had died, the passing of Euphemia and Fleamont hurting just as much. When Marlene had been murdered, her entire family wiped off the face of the earth, she’d been distraught. Yet through all of those she’d managed to muddle through and keep going. Through those she’d had James and Lily.
She’d had James unrelenting optimism and kind-hearted reassurances.
James.
At the thought of him another silent sob rolled through her. Because how could he be gone? How could a light as bright and infectious as his be gone when that didn’t seem possible. Even in the midst of the mess that was this war he’d remained upbeat and relentlessly confident even as they failed to gain any positive movement. Even having to go into hiding had not ripped that positivity from him.
‘Because he thought they would be coming out of it,’ her mind whispered, bringing a fresh wave of tears. Of course. Of course he would have thought they’d make it. Of course he would have anticipated escaping the greatest wizard in the world unscathed. James Potter could do anything.
Or at least she had thought so. With that thought her mind wandered to what his last moments were like. Had he been scared? When the most evil wizard in existence had turned up at his front door had he wanted to run away? No, knowing James he would’ve faced him head on if it had meant protecting his family he wouldn’t have even flinched.
But did that mean Lily had known what was coming? Had she had to live through it, knowing that there was no stopping him? Had she been scared? Daisy couldn’t bear to think of it. She couldn't bear to think of her sister, her perfect, practical, poised sister floundering in panic. She couldn’t think of her not knowing what to do, fearing for her baby’s life the way she feared for her husband’s or her own.
Had she thought of her? Hoped that somehow Harry would survive, that Daisy wouldn’t be left with no one. Even if she was destined to live without her sister, her other half, she’d have a part of her. She’d have someone.
But that was the thing. Daisy was supposed to have someone. She was supposed to have Sirius, he was supposed to be here with her, navigating through this grief together. But he’d just left her behind and it didn’t make any sense. The only thing she could tell herself was that there must be a reason for it, some protocol or command of the order that he’d known about and had to uphold regardless of how hard it was. Because he wouldn’t leave her, not for good reason.
Not when she needed him.
And she did. Up here in the bitter winds and freezing temperatures she needed him more than ever. She needed him to wrap his arms around her and tell her it was going to be okay no matter how hollow it sounded. She needed him to tell her they’d survive this. They had to. For Harry.
He’d been quiet for most of the flight, wrapped in his baby blanket and the gargantuan scarf Hagrid had draped over them which acted more like a duvet than a garment, but as they passed into the Scottish highlands he’d disturbed, the frigid Scottish climate too cold for him to be comfortable. Now he was standing on her lap tugging on her hair to get her attention. She was so lost in her thoughts she didn’t notice him for a moment until after a particularly sharp tug upon which she broke, yanking it from his fist angrily snapping, ‘Harry stop it!’
At that his bright green eyes widened and his lip started trembling, threatening to unearth the mightiest of screams. Except Daisy wanted to scream too. She wanted to scream and shout and cry and sob and let everything inside her out. But she couldn’t. She couldn’t and she couldn’t snap at Harry because what good would it do? How was he to know the weight of the situation? All he knew was that he was somewhere foreign, cold and tired and miles away from his mummy and daddy. He didn’t know that he’d never see them again. He didn’t know that at that moment Daisy felt as though her world was caving in on itself.
He wanted fun auntie Daisy. The one who never yelled at him or told him off. The one that made James and Lily tear their hair out when she gave him sweets or bought him presents for no reason, yes even James ‘buy anything on a whim’ Potter. He wanted his uncle Padfoot who’d see the fat tears rolling down his cheeks and turn into his favourite furry friend. He wanted his dad to make him laugh or his mum to cuddle him, making him feel better instantly.
He wanted all the things Daisy wanted.
But they weren’t going to get it, ever again. All they had now was each other and he didn’t deserve to be shouted at.
‘Sorry munchkin,’ she cooed shakily, wiping the damp tracks of tears from her cheeks, ‘m’sorry I shouted. What’s the matter?’
Harry grumbled and nestled into her neck allowing her to wrap her arms around him. As he nestled whingily into her she realised he was still tired which was no surprise given the tumultuous night he’d been through. He was always needy after he awoke begging to be cuddled for a while until he felt ready to face being awake for good.
‘He’s probably ready for sumthin’ to eat,’ Hagrid said, the most he’d spoken the entire ride, ‘we’re not far now. ‘Bout half an hour or so.’ ‘Right,’ Daisy said, her voice cracking from the lack of use. Hagrid was probably right; the sky was growing lighter now even though the sun was nowhere to be seen given the lateness of the year. Then again in the Scottish highlands there wasn’t much chance of the sun showing up at all which was backed by how cold it still was though as Hagrid started to descend, dipping below the cloud barrier towards the small settlement of Hogsmeade, it grew slightly warmer.
Whether it was Hagrid’s heft or the hardness of the mud underneath them the bike hit the floor with a thud, making Harry fuss and Daisy to feel a disconnect between her neck and brain. Hagrid dismounted rather gracefully, offering a large hand out for the toddler whilst Daisy got herself straight. Once sorted she took him back, the pair of them feeling rather put out even if the separation was momentary. Only then did Daisy look around, finding herself down the long lane that passed through the village out to the lookout post of the shrieking shack. A memory of traipsing down here on a snowy winter’s day with James bubbled in her mind but she shook it away as well as the tears it brought and followed Hagrid’s direction to enter through a back door.
Daisy walked through it and found herself in an entryway, her only options to go through an old wooden door or up a narrow staircase and given she didn't know where she was she waited for Hagrid to duck through and lead the way. As he closed the door behind them, locking the fresh air out and trapping her in the scent of stale ale she realised she was in a pub. She was sure it wasn’t the Three Broomsticks, they were too far out of town, so she reckoned more than likely it was the Hog’s Head though why Dumbledore would be here she didn’t know.
Either way she didn’t care, following Hagrid up the rickety old staircase that moaned and protested under his weight as he climbed to too thin stairs. The room he led her to was a reasonable size but it appeared smaller due to the sheer amount of furniture that had been crammed inside it. An old couch and armchairs were nestled by the roaring fire and one half of the wall had been taken up by a small kitchenette, stocked with the bare necessities, but the majority of the room resembled an office, albeit a messy one. Yet however chaotic and unlike Dumbledore’s it was he still looked quite at home stationed behind the large desk.
By his side was a woman she’d only ever seen in the prophet. Milicent Bagnold a hard faced, unyielding woman with a permanent look of displeasure riddled upon her face. ‘She looks like she’s lost a galleon and found a knut,’ Sirius had said the day she was appointed Minister for Magic. She looked that way now, her beady eyes narrowing as Daisy walked in no doubt looking bedraggled as ever.
In contrast McGonagall, who was by Dumbledore’s other side, looked positively motherly with her face growing concerned and sad as she took in Daisy and Harry, who was watching them all curiously. She even moved to hug her, her bony hand on Daisy’s shoulder, but Dumbledore stopped her, rising from his seat and placing his hands on the desk before clearing his throat in warning as he said, ‘Minerva.’
McGonagall glanced at Daisy and then sighed, backing up and away from the pair of them leaving them standing in the middle of the room exposed to all. Dumbledore offered her a smile but it didn’t have the normal warmth to it, the matter too grave that not even he could instil hope in anyone. And to her surprise he didn’t offer her any words of comfort or hope instead he merely asked, ‘with whom did you share a dormitory with during your time at Hogwarts?’ ‘What?’ Daisy asked, the question coming from the left field though as he started to repeat himself she realised he was still following protocol. Even when Voldemort was dead. When her sister and James were dead. He was still acting to the letter as if it mattered. ‘Alice, Mar and Lil,’ she parroted robotically, finally earning herself a sympathetic smile though it only came from McGonagall. Dumbledore just shrugged and said, ‘sorry I had to ask. Hagrid, what is the name of your new puppy?’ ‘Fang Dumbledore sir,’ Hagrid replied, ‘what was the last thing the three of us spoke of?’ ‘James and Lily’s passing,’ Dumbledore replied.
Daisy fought the wave of tears that came at his words not that Hagrid fared as well, sniffling and wiping his still red eyes with the corner of his sleeve. In fact all she could think to say was, ‘you knew?’ ‘Ah,’ Dumbledore said, finally offering a sad smile, ‘word got to us early I’m afraid. That’s why I sent Hagrid.’ ‘We were hoping it was a false alarm,’ McGonagall added, ‘though I suspect-‘ ‘It’s not,’ Daisy said flatly. ‘Is he,’ Dumbledore said, gesturing to the toddler in her arms, his eyes still bright and inquisitive in this new environment. ‘He’s fine from what we can tell but well there’s this,’ Daisy said, pushing the mop of black hair from his brow so that the lightning shaped cut was visible to them. She hadn’t dared to look at it since Sirius had shown her, the queasy feeling it gave her returning at the sight of it. ‘Mmm,’ Dumbledore mused, not easing her queasy feeling. ‘What? What is it?’ she asked worriedly. ‘A curse,’ Dumbledore said evenly. ‘A curse?’ Daisy asked, instinctively brushing her hand across it. Harry giggled and grabbed hold of it, playing with the ring on her finger which she allowed him to do. She was just thankful he was content. ‘A rebound curse it looks like. From whatever Voldemort tried to do,’ Dumbledore clarified, his words earning a shiver from everyone but Daisy. Once recovered the minister took a step forward, a question on the tip of her tongue though all she asked was, ‘Dumbledore?’ ‘We know that the prophecy spoke of Harry being the one with the power to defeat Lord Voldemort, yes?’ Dumbledore asked, unable to hide his contempt for having to explain himself to the woman. The minister nodded, ‘well, what the Dark Lord may not have thought is that the power may always be in existence.’ ‘But he’s just a baby!’ McGonagall protested. ‘And he has just survived the most evil wizard in the history of our world. With only a mark to suggest otherwise,’ Dumbledore shrugged, ‘his scar by effect is proof of it.’
The room was quiet, contemplating how a mere child could possibly have stopped the greatest evil any of them had ever known when his parents and countless others before him hadn’t been able to. Daisy didn’t know what to think but all she knew was that she didn’t like the look in the minister’s eyes, fear and awe. Daisy shifted Harry in her arms, jostling him until his head was on her shoulder, facing away from them all. Dumbledore sensed the reservation in her and cleared his throat, distracting the woman as he said, ‘now of course he may have had help in the matter. From what I am told James and Lily lay down their lives which I can only imagine acted as protection.’ ‘Blood magic,’ McGonagall said gravely. ‘Yes Minerva,’ Dumbledore agreed, ‘blood magic. A deep protection, one of love.’ ‘Then you were right Dumbledore,’ the minister said firmly, ‘it must be them. Family is the way to go in this instance.’ ‘But Dumbledore must it be them?’ McGonagall sighed, ‘from what I’ve seen.’ ‘They are family Minerva,’ Dumbledore implored.
‘I’m sorry, what are you on about?’ Daisy asked, unable to find the thread of the conversation through all the waffle though the knot in her stomach told her something was amiss. They’d been deep in conversation, the three of them debating with one another but they looked up as she spoke as if they’d forgotten she was even there. ‘Harry must be protected,’ the minister said as though it were obvious. Daisy fought the urge to roll her eyes merely biting back through gritted teeth, ‘yes I know that.’ ‘And the blood magic in him will serve as added protection but our primary defence would be for him to live away from the wizarding world whilst everything is fresh and Voldemort’s followers are still at large,’ the minister explained, ‘which is why he should go and live with his aunt and uncle.’ ‘Right,’ Daisy agreed though as she looked at them, sharing awkward glances, that knot in her stomach grew, ‘wait you mean Petunia?!’
‘Miss Evans,’ Dumbledore said with a sigh. ‘You cannot seriously want to send him to live with Petunia!’ Daisy said, her voice growing shriller which disturbed Harry even though she pressed on, ‘that is not happening!’ ‘Daisy,’ McGonagall said softly, ‘you’re young and grieving-’ ‘And?’ Daisy snapped, ‘if anything who better! We know what he’s lost. Petunia hasn’t even met him! She doesn’t even like James or wizards for that matter that’s why they wanted him to be with me, us, should anything happen. We’re his aunt and uncle.’ ‘You mean his godparents,’ the minister corrected. ‘Yes!’ Daisy said indignantly. ‘We’re supposed to trust him to you two,’ the minister asked, quirking a perfectly sculpted brow with a look of disdain. ‘Why wouldn’t you!’ Daisy shouted, ‘Sirius and I-’ ‘Sirius Black has just been apprehended for the murder of Peter Pettigew and twelve muggles,’ the minister challenged. Daisy faltered, the words not landing properly in her brain.
‘What?’ she asked, looking to McGonagall and Dumbledore for some clarification but they only offered looks of sadness. With a slight air of smugness the minister produced a copy of the daily prophet from her robes and dumped it on the table, front page out.
There, emblazoned on the front page was an article about the death of Lord Voldemort and the news of Harry, dubbing her nephew as ‘The Boy Who Lived’ but she turned over to the following page and there in front of her was a headline that made her heart stop.
BLACK HEIR TURNED MASS MURDERER
The photo underneath it was of a street where body bags and rubble littered the ground but she didn’t look at it, jumping straight to the article below it. She could feel eyes on her but she couldn’t make sense of the words, they wouldn’t sit right in her brain. ‘Mass murder’, ‘Death Eater’, ‘Peter Pettigrew’ were the only things that jumped out at her.
‘No,’ she whispered, whether to herself or them she wasn’t sure. But this had to be incorrect. Sirius was not a murderer, not to muggles, not to anyone. Not one of his best friends. A wave of grief, that admittedly was all too familiar in these past few hours, crashed through her again at the idea of losing Peter. How was this happening, they had to be wrong. They’d made a mistake they had to have, ‘no he wouldn’t do that. He couldn’t-’ ‘He would if his master was dead,’ the minister countered. ‘What are you talking about?’ Daisy asked exhaustedly. ‘Daisy, did you not wonder how Voldemort managed to find James and Lily,’ Dumbledore said quietly. ‘Well there must’ve been a mole like we’ve suspected for weeks,’ Daisy started before a pointed look made the implication dawn on her. And just like she couldn’t accept that Sirius could be involved in murder she couldn’t believe what they were suggesting, ‘no, no, not Sirius. He wouldn’t do that to James-’ ‘Daisy,’ McGonagall said sadly. ‘He was his brother! He wouldn’t do that to him or Lil. He wouldn’t do that to Harry!’ she shouted, her voice echoing around the wooden walls. What she wanted to scream was that he wouldn’t do that to her. He would never betray her like that. James either. ‘Or he’s a master manipulator to have you fooled as you are,’ the minister said walking towards her as she eyed her menacingly, ‘or you’re with him.’ ‘What?’ Daisy breathed, her breath shaky from shouting and her arm starting to hurt where Harry had unsettled and started to fidget pulling at her hair for attention. The minister didn’t pay her notice, turning to look at the others, dismissing her as if she were a child in timeout, ‘you were right Dumbledore.’ ‘Albus please,’ McGonagall said, casting a look at Daisy before pleading with the headmaster who seemed to be contemplating. ‘She’s not to be trusted,’ the minister reiterated. ‘What?’ Daisy gasped, ‘how dare you!’
‘Oh look at you!’ the minister snapped, brushing the young girl aside as she carried on speaking to Dumbledore, ‘she’s a mess! Erratic and hot-headed just like you said. He is the most famous wizard in the world Dumbledore he needs to be safe-’ ‘He’s my nephew!’ Daisy shrieked. ‘And a murderer’s godson,’ the minister spat before she got a hold of herself and straightened up, apparently embarrassed at her loss of control as she decreed, ‘he must go to his other family Dumbledore surely you must agree?’ ‘You can’t,’ Daisy whispered, panic setting in, ‘you can’t give him to Petunia, he's never even met her!’ ‘But she’s a relative,’ Dumbledore countered. ‘I’m a relative!’ Daisy shrieked. ‘And a mentally unbalanced one by the looks of things!’ the minister sneered. ‘Dumbledore please think about this! Daisy has a point, hasn’t he lost enough? Harry should go to someone he knows. Someone he’s familiar with-’ ‘Why not give him to the murderer himself!’ the minister challenged, folding her arms across her chest. ‘You know that is not the same!’ McGonagall said shrilly, ‘didn’t you see her? She looked just as blindsided as the rest of us by the news of Si-, of him.’ ‘And we’re supposed to trust her word for it?’ the minister asked. ‘I do not believe he had any other associates minister,’ Dumbledore said calmly.
But Daisy didn’t care. She wasn’t focused on who had done what or betrayed who. All she was thinking about was the idea of Harry being ripped from her, forced to spend his days with Petunia. McGonagall was right hadn’t Harry lost enough? Hadn’t she lost enough?
Her mind was still reeling from losing James and Lily but now Peter too. And Sirius.
No, no, no, it couldn’t be right. He couldn’t have been behind this there must be another explanation. Her Sirius couldn’t be a murderer. The boy who had been smart enough to flee the dark wizards at fifteen couldn’t fall in line with them now at the age of twenty-one. He hated them more than anyone. He wouldn’t have betrayed his family for them. And they were family. He had promised her that.
He wouldn’t have done that to her. And if he had she would’ve known right? She would’ve seen it coming, right?
They lived together, climbed into the same bed every night, and spoke every day. Sure as the war had plodded on it had been tense. As restrictions and protocols had been implemented restricting what they could and could not speak of in their own home their conversations had become superficial and few. But she would’ve known right? After all they’d all suspected a traitor in their midst but she would’ve spotted him if he was underneath her nose, wouldn’t she?
As she’d been dwelling on it she hadn't realised she had been backing up away from the arguing and chaos of it all until she felt the cool metal of a door knob nestled in her back. At the clunk the group looked at her but she didn’t think, fleeing through it and slamming it closed, locking it quickly behind her. She heard them rush towards her but she didn’t care not even when the minister called, ‘if you think you’re helping the matter you’re sorely mistaken missy!’
Daisy didn’t pay the old hag any attention. She wasn’t trying to flee. She wasn’t even trying to hide. She just wanted a moment to herself. A moment away from all the worry and accusations. A moment to regroup. To make sense of it all.
But it was something she couldn’t make sense of and so she didn’t bother and instead sank to the floor, allowing the tears to pour from her. Harry seemed concerned about his blubbering auntie but when his attempts to make her feel better by pressing sloppy kisses to her damp cheeks didn’t improve the situation he gave up, opting to nestle into her as she wept.
She didn’t know how long she spent crying on the floor of that bedroom. In fact she was surprised Harry hadn’t started to fuss after a while but when she glanced down she found him asleep, thoroughly exhausted. He didn’t even disturb as the door unlatched and creaked open. Daisy didn’t fight it. She wasn’t sure she had much fight left in her truth be told. Instead she allowed McGonagall to enter and watched as she sat herself down on the floor beside her, albeit rather ungracefully as she landed with an ‘oomph.’
They were quiet for a moment both staring at the now closed door, the only thing to be heard was a gentle sniffle from the blonde.
‘Daisy,’ McGonagall said after a beat. ‘He wouldn’t,’ Daisy whispered, more for herself than anyone else, ‘he wouldn’t do this I know he wouldn’t.’ ‘I know,’ McGonagall said softly. Daisy turned to look at her with surprise. McGonagall sighed, ‘I know he wouldn’t and I don’t want to believe it either trust me. But there is no other explanation. After all he was their secret keeper wasn’t he?’ ‘Yes but they,’ Daisy started but McGonagall placed a hand on her knee to silence her. ‘Daisy you can keep believing it and if you truly think Sirius is innocent then who am I to tell you not to,’ McGonagall reasoned, her lined face growing more sombre as she said, ‘but Harry needs you.’ ‘I know,’ Daisy whispered. ‘I have watched your sister Daisy and I do not like what I saw. He needs you. He needs a connection to our kind even if he’s kept away from all of this,’ she said gesturing to nothing, ‘but Dumbledore needs to be able to trust you and right now he is struggling.’ ‘How can I make him trust me?’ Daisy asked. ‘You need to decide what you want more. Harry or your loyalty to someone who may very well have betrayed you,’ McGonagall said, reaching out and moving a limp strand of hair from Daisy’s face, a sad smile on her lips as she said, ‘I know it’s hard to believe we can be taken for fools but it is not impossible.’
And with that she climbed up, groaning as her bones protested, before scuttling from the room.
That was the question.
Did she believe Sirius could have betrayed them? No, but why? Because she loved him? Because he told her he loved her? Did that mean anything when it came down to it? All her life she had been the emotional twin. The volatile one. She’d always allowed emotions and feelings to cloud her judgment but where had that gotten her. More importantly it wasn’t just her she had to think of, it was Harry. At that she wondered what Lily would think. Lily would look at the facts.
James would tell her there was no way this could be true but not her Lil. She’d believe it all unless the cold hard evidence pointed another way and right now it looked like it did. He was their secret keeper after all. He had been seen murdering twelve muggles in broad daylight. He’d murdered their friend.
‘Blown to smithereens,’ had been the phrasing in the prophet and with that a new wave of nausea hit and she lurched forward knocking Harry off her knee as she attempted to reach the bin but missed spewing the watery remnants of stomach acid onto the wooden floor. With a flourish of her wand she cleaned it up and then stood, scooping a disgruntled Harry from the floor before she headed out back into the room.
The minister was gone now and McGonagall, Dumbledore and Hagrid had all taken to sitting around the fire though admittedly Hagrid looked as if the chair he was sitting in had sprouted out of him rather than him sitting in it. Daisy sighed and settled into the only empty armchair passing Harry to McGonagall on her way so that they might both have some respite.
She couldn’t be focused on him at this moment in time. She was playing ball.
‘I’m glad you could finally join us,’ Dumbledore said as though she’d only just gotten there and had not been squirrelled away for god knows how long, ‘tea?’ ‘No thanks,’ Daisy said, the acrid taste of vomit still in her mouth. From beside her McGonagall conjured a baby bottle and tested the warmth of the milk on her wrist before offering it to Harry who took it happily, nestling back into the older witch as he drank. Daisy debated taking it off him. After all the sun was rising through the window which meant he’d be due a proper breakfast then again she realised there wasn't much point in doing so. It wasn’t as though he was sticking to the militant regime Lily had been implementing recently to improve his sleeping and eating. Fed was fed at this point. Not to mention she could get him back on track when they were settled somewhere but to do that she’d need to play the game, toe the line and make Dumbledore think she was ready to become his guardian.
And so with the taste of bile growing stronger in her mouth she said, ‘I’m sorry about all that. I know what you must think but well my entire life just sort of imploded in one night.’ ‘It’s understandable,’ Dumbledore said, ‘quite a shock for us all.’ ‘I just can’t believe,’ she was going to say ‘that he did it’ but she could feel their eyes heavy on her and defaulted to, ‘that I could be so blind.’ ‘Spies are good at what they do, Miss Evans,’ Dumbledore said, ‘that’s why they’re spies.’ ‘Had us all fooled the nasty lil toerag,’ Hagrid grunted. Daisy had to will herself not to flinch. ‘Either way the matter is being dealt with,’ Dumbledore said diplomatically. At that her ears pricked up her words coming before she thought, ‘how exactly?’ ‘Azkaban,’ Dumbledore said. ‘Right,’ she said, forcing the lump in her throat down as all the tales and anecdotes she’d heard about the brutality of the place rushed to the forefront of her mind. ‘Cut and dry I’m afraid, which means he’ll be there by nightfall and more importantly away from Harry,’ Dumbledore said. ‘Yeah, right,’ Daisy mumbled, trying to push the idea of shackles and dementors from her mind. ‘Miss Evans,’ Dumbledore said, capturing her attention once more. His tone was serious now. This was the crux of the matter and he was scrutinising her every move to make sure her answers aligned with what he needed to hear. Daisy straightened up, pushing her shoulders down as she tried to keep her breathing level. Dumbledore continued, ‘I know what the minister may think but I can assure you I do not see this matter the same way. I believe in your innocence.’ ‘Thank you,’ she said quietly. She wanted to scream that he had no reason not to, that she was innocent, but she didn't bother. Now was not the time for charging in without thought. ‘But that doesn’t mean I am sure about what should happen with regards to Harry. Voldemort may be gone but his followers live on. And like the actions of Sirius Black we cannot know what they might do now they are without a leader,’ Dumbledore said, ‘that is why I thought your sister to be a good fit. Not because of doubt for yourself but because by the very essence of being a muggle she has more protection than anyone. Blood magic may very well protect the boy but a muggle world is a buffer to everything.’ ‘What do you mean?’ Daisy asked, confused. ‘I do not wish to rip Harry from what he knows any more than you do. I understand that you are a big part of his life but his life as it is cannot continue,’ Dumbledore said. ‘I don’t understand,’ Daisy said. ‘Harry needs to be raised away from our world. As a muggle,’ Dumbledore said flatly. ‘What?’ Daisy gasped. ‘He needs to be raised away from-’ ‘Magic! You want to deprive him of magic!’ Daisy baulked recalling her own mundane muggle upbringing, the childhood that had felt as though it was in black and white until the age of eleven when magic had turned everything technicolour. ‘I want to keep him from other wizards,’ Dumbledore corrected, ‘he is vulnerable.’ ‘And how is leaving him without magic protecting him?’ Daisy asked. ‘He won't be without magic. He’ll have you. Of course you would have to play the part of a muggle, pretend so to speak, but in time he will learn the truth. He will come to Hogwarts as you and his parents did. He will be a magnificent wizard Daisy,’ Dumbledore assured, ‘but for now the wizarding world is no place for him. He’ll be left to be a legend in his own right without having to live as one under everyone’s scrutiny.’
Daisy thought about it for a moment. She could see their point. Her barely two-year-old nephew had just taken down the most evil wizard in history that wasn’t exactly something people would get over in a hurry. Whether good or bad. If they stayed in the wizarding world they’d be just as isolated anyway, confined by prying eyes and ears. To live as a muggle would keep him safe and free.
But to deprive him of magic?
To lie to him until he was of an age to understand it all felt wrong. It was depriving him a piece of himself. The true memory of his parents. Not to mention depriving herself of it. How could she speak of James and Lily in earnest with so many lies nestled in between to make everything sound normal.
Then again what choice would she have. To deny Dumbledore would only end up with him being shipped off to Petunia’s with him being forced to live this life anyway only without the benefit of her beside him. It was a lose-lose situation.
‘So what do we do?’ Daisy asked, earning a kind smile in return as Dumbledore rose from his seat, smoothing out his dark purple robes for a moment. ‘For now stay here,’ he said, ‘I’ll have a room set up for you whilst we make arrangements.’ ‘He can stay with me?’ she asked, though as Dumbledore looked over his half-moon spectacles eyeing her closely she panicked that she’d asked the wrong thing. ‘Do you promise to fulfil your end of this agreement?’ he asked. ‘I promise,’ Daisy nodded. ‘Excellent,’ he smiled as though he’d just agreed for the Hogwarts house elves to make apple crumble instead of jam roly-poly for dessert and not a life changing decision, ‘Minerva if you could speak to Aberforth regarding a room and then if you could acquire some provisions for them both.’ ‘Yes Dumbledore,’ McGonagall said, slipping Harry off her lap and onto Daisy’s in such a fluid motion that he didn’t even disturb and instead kept guzzling away at his bottle which was near done. ‘Hagrid come with me,’ Dumbledore said, pressing his hand to the man’s shoulder, ‘I have things for you to do whilst I’m with the minister.’ ‘Right you are Dumbledore,’ Hagrid said, pulling himself from the chair and heading out the door McGonagall had just headed through.
Once it was just her and Dumbledore alone he smiled at her and nodded before saying, ‘I know this isn’t easy Miss Evans. But I must ask you to trust in me.’
And with that he flounced from the room, closing the door behind him gently. Daisy flopped back exhausted, finally closing her eyes for the first time since last night. None of it seemed real.
James. Lily. Voldemort. Peter. Sirius. Azkaban. Death. Harry.
Everything bounced around in her brain in a jumble of pain and sorrow but as she heard the teet of the bottle detaching and felt it fall into her lap she looked to find Harry watching her, his hand now done holding the bottle and instead holding her necklace.
Her Daisy chain that she’d worn every day since it had been bought for her.
A reminder of the now tainted memories it held. Without thinking she yanked at it, snapping the clasp apart and taking it from the boy's hand. He allowed her to, watching as she slipped it into her back pocket unsure of what to do with it just yet.
‘Just you and me eh?’ she asked, taking his hand in hers and kissing it, ‘just you and auntie Dais.’
Harry gurgled and smiled gummily at her.
‘Merlin help us both eh?’

Overturned Daisies. Chapter 3 - The pair of lost sandals
A snippet from my most recent chapter!
There was a long pause as James sat, tucked in a ball, his arms guarding his head. He figured death would be swift, but honestly, it was as if it had passed him by without a glance. If he had it in him to care, he would promptly knock on the grim reaper's door and ask a very important question about schedules and the value of introductions. At least say hi before you have me pushing up the daisies. But there was nothing, not even the sound of bathroom fans which had, a moment before, hummed so loudly he wanted to rip his ears off. The only audible noise at the present was his beating heart, and jagged breath fighting against his ribs. When you die do you usually hear yourself breathing? Did corpses breathe?
Hair flicked up from his grasp as he peered around his arms’ guard, darkness had encaptured him. He allowed his head to push further up from its protection. The darkness felt quite manufactured, if he was honest, and he placed a hand on the ground. It was definitely tiled, a wet puddle greeting his palm which made his nose scrunch. So, he wasn’t dead. Bathroom floor water, cold hugging his fingers were the least of his problems, despite the fact he would need to sanitize it like crazy. Eyes adjusting to the dimness, his breath hitched as he noticed the two undead creatures, zombies, he resolved, uncomfortably.
No idea how they managed to exist, it felt like a personal vindication from the world for him watching Night of the Living Dead with Sirius when they were both thirteen. It was on television! But neither of them could sleep for a week, resolving that they were too old to go for help, and that they had each other so they would be fine. This worked, the boys staying up telling ghost stories, until a tree branch knocked on James’ window, startling both the kids, and James had ran down the hallway, banging on his parents door and asked if they could possibly sleep in their room. His parents were happy for the company.
The creatures had frozen in the place, glazed eyes scanning through the darkness. One was making a snotty inhale and exhale noise, as if it was sniffing around something, and the others’ nose was at an odd angle, with blood stains leaving it. They both, however, were searching.
James held himself frozen on the ground, it must be his lucky day that both zombies who were so desperately trying to smell him in the darkness could not. He noted to himself, he was even luckier especially because he had just washed with a delightful cedarwood and tea tree body wash that would make it nearly impossible to miss him.
The drain from the shower he had used let out a gargle which made the hairs on James’ arm shoot up in shock, but both of the undead creatures immediately swung their focus towards the sound. Eyebrows lifting up, he realized their vision must be near blind in the darkness, and they had been waiting for him to show himself in any other way. Making an effort to move slowly, in case their eyes decided to adjust suddenly to the situation, he gazed around for anything within arms reach. Honestly, there was an entire lack of anything near him, he had moved as far back as he could from any items in his attempt to make space between himself and the zombies.

JAMES POTTER MASTERLIST
At this hour the Gryffindor common room is lit by multiple candles and lanterns and chills run up your arms from the midnight air as you hug your knees.
On the ground, Lily Evans sits across from you, next to James Potter, and Marlene Mckinnon is on James's left. Sirius Black sits next to you and Remus Lupin next to him. It's amusing how quickly and well you've all managed to form a deformed circle.
You look at Lily. Her fiery auburn hair is pinned behind her by her quill and she's dressed in a blue sweatshirt, with knitted daisies on the sleeves, and a pair of worn out plaid pajama bottoms.
Marlene, who is sitting criss-cross with her elbows on her knees, is wearing her uniform without her cloak and her sandy-blonde hair falls down her shoulders.
James is also dressed in his uniform but, along with his cloak, his gray sweater is nowhere to be seen and he's only in his white chemise. He's undone his Gryffindor tie to hang loosely around his neck.
You glance at Sirius next, who much like his best friend, looks equally as relaxed. He's in a maroon cardigan and black sweatpants. He's also lazily pulled his hair into a half-up half-down situation, leaving array strands that frame his cheekbones.
Remus, unlike his friends, is wearing his uniform as he would in class and when you look at him you can see that his cloak lays on the arm of the armchair behind him. When Remus sees you looking, he smiles.
"Come on, Y/n." Marlene exclaims. She sounds exasperated. You follow her gaze onto the glass bottle in front of you. Your eyes then move upwards until, again, you're met with Remus's dark, hazelnut, eyes and his friendly smile.
Immediately, you look away and fiddle with your hands. "It's just a kiss." Marlene insists.
Sure, just a kiss, easy for Marlene to say, she isn't nearly as close to Remus as you are. Plus, Marlene has no clue this kiss would be your first. You close your eyes, cursing yourself. You knew you shouldn't have joined the game.
"Y/n doesn't have to kiss me if she's uncomfortable, McKinnon." Remus states calmly.
"It's okay." Sirius jumps in, his hand brushing yours, and he leans over. This time, he spins the bottle, "Anyways, it's my turn now." He winks.
You relax a little and glance shyly at Remus, who only sends you a reassuring smile. Your eyes wander to James. It's always unintentional, you convince yourself, and as usual his expression is unreadable. Your heart squeezes when his eyes lock with yours.
However, your small moment of peace as you look at James is broken as soon as the bottle stops spinning and it points at you. Everyone is silent until Sirius asks hesitantly, "Shall I spin again?"
* * *
You haven't moved from the ground.
Your three best friends stand over you, all of them wearing concerned expressions as you hide behind your hands, "I ruined it," You mumble sadly.
"It was just a silly game," Sirius promises, crossing his arms, "So what you didn't want to kiss Remus and I? It doesn't matter."
You tense. You look at them. Remus seems nervous as he scans you up and down.
James still has this unreadable look in his eye, but the moment he kneels down and touches your knee, you relax, "What's really bothering you, love?" He asks.
"It's stupid."
"Nothing you could say is stupid to us, Y/n/n." Remus speaks up, immediately accompanied by Sirius's enthusiastic nod as he crosses his legs, sitting down, and leans his arms across his knees. He sends you a lopsided smirk and tilts his head. Remus crouches next to him and James has his knees bent with you sitting inside them. His hand brushes up to skim your hair near your cheek.
"I'vejustneverhadmyfirstkiss." You admit quietly.
"You have to speak up, doll." Sirius chuckles.
"I've just never had my first kiss and I thought I wouldn't care but it was weirdly intimidating." You feel your cheeks burn as you look at the boys. Sirius and Remus are speechless for a while until they look at one another and smile,
"That's not stupid, Y/n. Or embarrassing. It's cute and completely normal." Remus reassures you and pats your knee. "We understand that you want your first kiss to be with someone you care about and not your dimwitted best friends."
You don't think their dimwitted but nod anyway. Once more your gaze drifts to James and your breath catches in your throat. He's staring. It's intoxicatingly intimidating.
"You haven't kissed anyone?" James blurts out as if he's surprised, which only makes you more embarrassed. "I just assumed," He starts to explain but is immediately interrupted by Sirius,
"You do realize not having had your first kiss yet doesn't mean no one wants you, yeah?" He asks seriously and you nod weakly. You knew that, but it also never feel amazing when no one shows any interest in you.
Remus stands up, dusts his pants, and then he pats your head as you look up at him, "You'll find someone you'll want to kiss sooner than you think, Y/n/n." He smiles as if he knows something you don't.
Sirius follows Remus and stands over you. You look at James, who is also still on the ground, and you don't dare move. "Moony and I are going to bed, it's late." Sirius says.
"You coming, Prongs?" Remus's voice is light.
James looks at you. He pauses and his eyes seem to vibrate a moment as he looks around the room. Your body burns for him to stay where he is but when he stands up, you feel crushed.
So that's why everyone calls it a crush, you realize as James tells you he's joining the others. Your body feels as if it switched on autopilot when you take James's extended hand and he pulls you up to stand in front of him.
"Night," He mumbles, cheeks flushed. He doesn't move. Sirius and Remus have since disappeared upstairs to the boy's dorms and it feels like years pass as James stares at you.
You blame the whiskey for what happened next. Without thinking, or maybe because you'd thought about this moment too much, you take James's cheeks in your hands, pull him into you, and kiss him.
It's more of an inexperienced peck on the lips but as soon as they touch, your eyes snap open and you realize what you've done. You pull away, hands faltering around James's face.
His eyes are round and he's breathing hard. When you feel his hand hesitate at your waist, you jump and move away from him. You want to speak but you can't make your mouth work.
"Y/n," James starts. You read his expression as embarrassed and your heart drops. You can't think of a smart thing to say or do as you panic so you turn around and practically sprint up the stairs to your dorm.
You slam the door behind you, waking your roommates as they grumpily shift in their beds. Quite dramatically, you lean against the door, hands shaking against the wood as your mind feels like it's running a thousand miles per hour.
* * *
James can't sleep. He's been tossing and turning in his bed for almost three hours now but all he can think about is you.
He can't shake the feel of your hands on his cheeks or the way your lips touched his. He didn't kiss you back, he remembers, and he physically cringes as he turns around onto his stomach, wraps his arms around his pillow and muffles his scream.
"You okay, mate?" Sirius's voice cuts into the silent room.
"No." James mumbles, turning onto his back again as he stares into the darkness and gently skims his lips with his fingers.
"What happened?" Remus asks, voice hoarse and tired.
James's brain is too tired to think of anything rational. He's only been thinking of you since you ran away from him and he can't stop himself from admiring, "She kissed me."
* * *
Surprisingly, you've managed to avoid James for a little more than a week. In fact, you'd been avoiding your two other best friends just as long. You knew James must have told them, and they must find it absolutely hilarious.
"James is worried about you, Y/n." Lily says one morning as you both walk to the Quidditch Pitch. You tense at the sound of his name. "He wants me to make sure you're doing okay." She continues when you just wish wouldn't.
"Never been better, Lil" You lie, fidgeting with your Gryffindor scarf and adjusting your hat. "You can tell him that the next time you see him." You say, voice as unemotional as you can manage.
"You should tell him yourself, after his game." Lily tries to explain softly, "He misses you. He probably hasn't come up to you because he wants to give you space since — you know."
You cringe, wishing you hadn't told Lily about your kiss with James.
"Yeah, I know." You whisper. You feel like a broken record repeating the same words in an endless circle, "It was stupid, it didn't mean a thing, he doesn't see me as anything more than a friend", so you stay quiet until you find decent seats in the stands.
Lily didn't mention Remus would be with Marlene so when you see him, nose buried in a book, hair falling around his face, you almost turn around.
"Y/n/n?" Remus calls. He stands and looks at you so kindly you feel guilty, "Hi." He seems happy you didn't run away from him.
"Hi." You say, hesitantly walking next to him and grasping the edge of the stands with your hands until you kind of feel the splinters in your palm.
A moment of silence passes and then Remus says, "Congrats on the top score in Charms, yesterday. Pads, Prongs, and I were extremely proud." He's trying to sound normal and you feel a little better that he didn't mention the reason you've been ignoring him.
"Thanks." You smile, which earns you a smile from Remus too. However, your attention is pulled away by the teams being called out.
You feel a little nauseous when you see James fly onto the pitch. He does an obnoxious little trick on his broom and then waves but it's painfully obvious in his eyes he's searching for someone in the crowd. When they land on you, his smile falters as you snap your entire head away from him.
When the game starts, you try to look at other players but you're drawn to him. In fact, by half-time you're so immersed in the way James glides around in the air, hair messier and messier, that you don't realize one of the bludgers is whizzing directly towards you.
Remus shouts your name as time stands still. Your instinct is to turn your head and squeeze your eyes shut. You prepare yourself to feel something hit you, but instead all you feel is someone's nails skimming your cheek as the students around you gasp.
Your eyes open just in time to see James fall to the ground, broom crashing onto the grass without him, as his arms hold the bludger. He hits his head with a smack and rolls onto his stomach.
Entire rows of students are on their feet now, eyes wide, as James wrestles with the rogue bludger, which squirms against him.
As if in a trance, your fingers press on your cheek where James must have accidentally scratched you when he flew in to snatch the bludger. You hear the whistles and shouts from the teachers and the next thing you know, you're sitting in the hospital wing with James next to you.
He presses an ice pack to his temple and then holds it out to you. You look at him timidly and shake your head.
"What happened out there?" You ask, breaking the awkward tension.
"Oh, um, someone must have enchanted the bludger and it went crazy. Happens sometimes. Ravenclaws are cheaters." He grimaces as he applies more pressure to his head.
"Does it hurt?" You look at him more closely.
James sends you a familiar smirk, "Yeah and if I puke from my concussion, I'll make sure I puke on you."
"Pass." You retort immediately, scrunching your nose with a chuckle. For a moment, you both overlook what happened between you two and it almost feels like normal.
"You don't understand how much I missed that." James points out, dramatically flopping onto his back on the mattress. You turn and raise your eyebrows,
"What?"
"Your laugh. You." He admits. You feel faint.
Still, you lay down next to him and cross your arms over your stomach, "Yeah." Is all you say because you don't know what else you can say.
"Our kiss doesn't have to count." He blurts out in a very James fashion and you turn your head a little to look at him. He has a lip in his mouth and his eyebrows are furrowed. You feel an ache in your chest at his words and you whisper,
"Why?" You find yourself asking.
James looks at you now, your noses almost touching, "Because, I want your first kiss to be with someone special, Y/n. Not with a boy who couldn't even bring himself to kiss you back." His laugh sounds gloomy.
Your cheeks start to burn and you look at the ceiling, "It's my fault. I was a little drunk and I completely ambushed you. It was wrong and I'm sorry."
You can hear the silence. James pauses, "Why have you been avoiding me?" He sounds hurt and it's his comment that finally makes you realize just how much you'd been hurting your best friends over this last week.
"I've been embarrassed." You cover your face with your hands.
"I don't want you to be embarrassed." He sits up and you do the same as James starts to ramble, "I- listen - I just need to know, do you like me, Y/n?"
You're a little taken aback by the question, "Of course I like you, James. You're my best friend." It doesn't even cross your mind that he could mean romantically.
He frowns, "No, that's not what I mean." You're extra aware of your heart suddenly, "Why did you want me as your first kiss?"
You remember all the times James has been the only boy you've ever wanted to kiss. Like the time in first year when he'd been the only one to stand up to the bulky fifth year that had called you a mudblood in the courtyard. Or your birthday picnic in fourth year, where James spent hours making flapjacks because you'd mentioned in passing that they were your favorite childhood dessert.
How could you not want him as your first kiss?
You lay back on the bed and turn your head. Slowly, James follows until you're so close again, "I - I'm not exactly sure." You admit, "I don't think I even imagined my first kiss with anyone else." Something shifts in the air as you can see in James's eyes that he understands exactly what you want to say.
"Oh." James whispers. You both subconsciously move in closer.
"Yeah." You mumble, eyes fluttering as your noses brush.
"So, can I kiss you again?" He asks, breathlessly.
"Yes." You say and feel him gently caress your cheek with his knuckles. When you kiss, it's so different than when you first kissed him. This time, he's actually kissing you back. His lips are velvety and the way he moves them makes you feel dizzy. It's surreal to have him in this way.
"I've wanted you to kiss me for so long." James admits breathlessly between the kiss.
"Really?" You pull away.
"Yeah. It was quite pathetic really." He laughs in embarrassment.
"Why didn't you try?" You ask, looking at him and tracing his jawline with your index.
"I don't know. I was too nervous." James frowns, "But, I'm happy you kissed me – even if it certainly was a surprise."
"Yeah, I'm sorry." You say bashfully.
James kisses you again, his hand on your cheek, "No. No sorries anymore. Just kisses."
"Okay," You smile, "I can do that."
* * *
You and James have managed to keep your new relationship secret for a while. Well, until two weeks later, when the boys invite everyone over to their dorm for a small party.
You sit next to James, his hand resting behind you, as your friends continue to laugh in drunken amusement.
"Okay, who's spinning this baby first?" Sirius slurs, excitedly, as he sets the empty glass bottle in the center of you all, "Doll, you don't have to play if you don't wanna." He looks at you sympathetically.
You smile at Sirius, "I wanna spin it." You lean forward on your hands and before anyone can even think to protest, you spin the bottle.
"Y/n," James stutters out but his words fail in his throat when he sees you intentionally hold the nose of the bottle to point at him.
You look up and smirk, "Oups." You tease with a wink and return to sit cross-cross next to James.
Your boyfriend smiles and gently turns your head with his hand on your chin. He presses a kiss to your lips. They taste like cherry liquor and you feel him relax. You kiss him once more before you let him pull away and the silence in the room is deafening.
"I think we definitely missed something, mates." Sirius whispers to the others and then he turns to you and James and asks, "Are you spinning, Prongs?"
James kisses your cheek and then looks up at his friend, "Does it look like I wanna spin, Pads?" Sirius shakes his head awkwardly and James continues, "Y/n and I will sit this game out."
He stands and helps you up. You stumble into him a little, a wide smile on your lips, and wave to your friends as James walks you out the door and into the Common Room.
All you hear before the door shuts is Remus's small, "Fucking finally." followed by soft chuckles.

Balance is key | Regulus Black x fem! reader
Regulus Black x clumsy fem! reader who has a crush on him
fluff
word count: 1.1 k words
part 1, part 2
Saturday came, and you had never felt more stressed in your life.
Lily sat on your bed, chuckling lightly. “Evans, you’re not helping me, you know? What do I wear?” In your arms you held three different sundresses. “What if I’m overdressed? And it’s so late, I have to be there by noon!”
“Y/N, please, it’s eight a.m.. You still have four hours, and you just have to choose an outfit and shower”
“Oh, my, God, I only have four hours? What do you mean I have four hours? I’m showing up to my first date with the love of my life looking like a troll? I’m so, so fucked, Regulus is never going to like me!”
She held your shoulders in her hands. “First of all, you will be ready in two hours maximum. Second of all, Regulus asked you out on a date, not the other way around, so I think he’s as nervous as you. You are gorgeous, please stop stressing, you’re giving me a headache, okay?” You nodded. “Now, for the outfit: it’s a picnic, so I think the sundress would look great, what about this one?” She picked up the one dress you forgot about, the pink one with little daisies drawn all over, which happened to be the best dress you got.
“You are an angel, you know that?” She chuckled. “Yeah, yeah now go change”
You sat near the Black Lake, stressing. You didn’t know if Regulus wanted to pick you up from your dorm, so you just thought it would be best to wait for him there. Except, you didn’t know if you were in the right place, given the fact that the lake had so many different picnic spots, you just prayed that Regulus thought of the same spot as you.
Now that you were thinking about it, it would have been better to wait for him outside of his dorm, but then you would have looked like a stalker. What if he didn’t find you? Or worse, what if he offered a date out of pity, and now he wasn’t going to show up? It was a quarter past noon, and he was nowhere to be seen.
As you were about to get up, you saw a dishevelled Regulus running in your direction, a picnic basket in his hand and a bouquet on the other, making you take a breath of relief. “Y/N! I went to your dorm” He paused, taking a deep breath. “And asked for you” Now he sounded like he was struggling to breath.
“Oh my God, please take a seat before you- As you were about to stand, you stepped over your dress, making you fall face first on the ground. “Hmpf” You exchanged a look with Regulus, and then you both started wheezing.
“What” A fit of giggle interrupted you. “What a disastrous start”
Regulus was now clenching his belly. It was kind of a vision seeing him like this, given the fact that you’ve never heard him laugh properly, only chuckle, and the fact that you were the one to see him like this made you feel butterflies in your belly.
After you calmed down, he sat next to you. “I was trying to say that I went to your dorm, but you were nowhere to be found. I thought it was obvious that I was going to pick you up. Anyways, fortunately I saw James, who told me that you were so stressed, you decided to come here by yourself. It was noon when I found this out, so I decided to just sprint to the lake, why did you choose this spot anyways? It’s a miracle I found you, it’s so isolated”
You found his rambling a bit confusing, but most of all cute. “I thought you were going to be waiting here for me, and I didn’t want to make you feel like I stood you up. Only when I sat here I realized that this might not be the best idea I’ve ever had”
He chuckled. “Let’s say I should have told you that we were coming here together. Here are your flowers” You blushed, and when you took a proper look, squealed. “Pink tulips!? They are my favourite; how did you know?” You hugged them to your chest.
“I asked Sirius, of course, who asked James, who asked Lily. Glad you like them” This made you blush so hard, you knew Regulus must have noticed: and he did. “You’re so cute when you get this flustered, you know?” He placed a soft kiss on your cheek, not helping you at all.
As you were about to cover your face with your hands, you accidentally hit his nose.
“Oh, my God I’m so sorry, why do I have to be this clumsy? Let me just kiss it better” As you put your lips on his nose, you cringed internally: you were making a fool of yourself, again.
There was a moment in which you both looked at eachother, you were waiting for his reaction wide-eyed. “Now, love, does that mean that I have to get punched in the face to have you kissing my lips, or is this date sufficient?”
“What- I…” Your brain wasn’t cooperating, but who could have blamed you? Your all time crush was hinting that he wanted to kiss you. “Do you want to kiss? Because I would love to kiss you. Oh, shit, why do I have to make everything so weird- and why did I tell you this? It was supposed to stay in my head! Honestly, I would be embarrassed to date me-“ He interrupted you by kissing your lips softly, making you melt right into his touch. He slowly licked your lower lip, sinfully, making you gasp: truth was, this was your first kiss, and you were kind of lost.
You pondered for a minute whether you had to inform him or not, but as the kiss went on, you progressively panicked. “Sorry Reg, this was my first kiss”
He didn’t look surprised, which made you even more self-conscious. “Love, I know that. Just relax and let me do the work, mh-mh? And don’t go shy on me now, it’s a normal thing to not have kissed anyone else at eighteen, the fact that you chose to me to be your first is doing wonders to my ego”
He cradled your head once again, kissing you softly, this time you followed his lead, you felt his smile against your lips.
At the end of the day, your clumsiness wasn’t that bad.

The new café that just opened up nearby your flat became very popular and customers were constantly in and out. You were one of those people that visited quite often. You would visit for the bustling atmosphere and where you would go to escape the flat from your roommates and study at the café. Today was a slow day at the café and you wanted to go to the café so they had decided to come with you to the café to see why you were there so often.
“I don’t see what the fuss is about.” Marlene had said once you guys had entered the café. The café was a relative size and reminded you of a 70’s diner. It had vintage posters plastered across the walls, some neon signs hanging up, there was 70’s and 80’s music playing softly in the background, tables were scattered throughout the café, there were some booths and nooks and crannies where you could sit, and there was even some hanging plants near the register and the entrance of the café.
“Well I think it’s cute, I love the vintage aesthetic it has going on, Lily said as she was taking in the café. You had led them to the register to order your drink, while Lily and Marlene had stayed back to see what the menu had to offer.
You perked up when you saw who was handling the register. This did not go unnoticed by your roommates and they saw who made you so excited to see in the café. They saw he was pretty tall, sandy brown hair that seemed a bit messy from running his hand through it, amber green eyes that held a softness when he caught sight of you, he was wearing a black shirt underneath his apron, and his nametag was pinned to the apron, it had read Remus (moony).
“Hi, Remus!” You greeted him eagerly. He chuckled under his breath at how cute you were, “Hello,” he greeted softly, and he had peered over your shoulder to find your roommates studying him with what seemed like scheming faces. “Did you bring your friends?” Remus asked you curiously.
You looked over your shoulder to see the same sight that Remus was seeing, “Oh, yeah those are my friends and roommates, the redhead is Lily, and the blonde is Marlene.” You introduced him to them briefly. He gave them a slight wave and smile and they came up to order.
“Soo, I see why you enjoy coming here so often,” Marlene says smugly while sidling up to your side to order with Lily smirking at you. You can feel your cheeks flush with heat and you nudge both of them in the sides in a way to get them to shut up. They snicker at your flustered state and order their drinks.
They go find a table and you yet to order so they had left you at the register with Remus. “Soo,” Remus drawled, “Are they always like that?” He had gestured behind you and you turned around to see them making kissy faces at you and Remus. You slightly color at their teasing so you flip them the bird.
You turn around and face Remus, with a sheepish smile on your face. “Not all the time but, it seems today they feel like teasing me.” Remus makes a face of understanding because Sirius and James could be the exact same. “Well do you want your usual?” “Yes, please!” You say with a bright smile on your face and Remus could melt at the sight of your smile.
Some yelling from the back breaks Remus out of his stupor and turns around to see Sirius and James spilling the girl’s drinks on the floor before they could have said their names. He turns around to give you a sheepish smile and you giggle at his expression. “I’ll have to help them clean up, but after we’ll get your drinks out as soon as possible.” You nod at him with a comforting smile and go to sit with Lily and Marlene.
“I can see why you like it here,” Marlene tells you with a smirk on her face. You slightly scowl at her, “Oh yeah, why is that Marls?” You ask her. “Clearly because of the attractive baristas here.” Lily pipes up teasingly. “Oh I don’t doubt that, did you see that Sirius bloke? Oh god, I think I’m in love!” Marlene exclaims. You and Lily giggle at her dramatics. “It seems that a certain someone has an eye on Mr. Remus at that counter.” Lily nudges you playfully and you shove her right back.
“Well I can tell the only reason that James dropped the drinks is that he was too busy staring at the redhead next to me.” You retort. “Well, I won’t deny he isn’t attractive…” Lily trails off. “What is with us and the baristas?” Marlene asks the group. “Well, I do know that James’s mum owns the cafe and she hired the boys to work it.” You inform the group. There was a hum of understanding from the girls and the conversation flowed quite easily.
After a while, the boys had finished remaking the drinks and they had made it a point to bring out the drinks with each respective boy, though they usually call out the names. “Hello Ladies,” Sirius flirts. “Which one of you beautiful gals would be Marlene?” Marlene giggles and raises her hand and Sirius hands her the drink she ordered.
James is up next, “Would the dashing redhead, be Lily?” “You’d be correct,” Lily says and gives him a smile. James melts and just stares at her like he just fell in love. Last but not least we have Remus. “Come on Moons, just give the drink to your lovely girl,” Sirius mutters to Remus while giving him a nudge in your direction.
Remus rolls his eyes but blush is growing on his cheeks. “Here you go.” Remus gives you a small smile and wink and your smile back with a flush growing on the back of your neck and on your cheeks. “Thank you, Remus,” you murmur and they turn back to the register. As you guys were about to take a sip out of your drinks, Marlene and Lily noticed there was something written on the cups. They saw that James and Sirius’s numbers were scrawled on them with cheesy little notes.
They smile at the sight and as you were checking your cup you only saw a note and doodle that Remus usually puts on your cup but no number. You frown slightly at it but are still in a good mood by his note and little wolf and moon doodle.
You and the girls chat for a little while after you finish your drinks and you guys decided to head back to the flat. As you were getting up, you realized you needed to use the bathroom so you tell them and they said they would wait outside for you.
“Now’s your chance Moony!” James exclaims once you’re in the bathroom. “What barge into the bathroom and ask for her number?” Remus scoffs. Sirius slaps Remus’s head. “Ow!” Remus exclaims while rubbing the spot that Sirius had hit. “No, you wait until she comes out of the bathroom, and call her over and then ask her,” Sirius tells Remus the plan. “Alright fine, if she says no, I’m blaming the both of you,” Remus grumbles.
After you were done with the bathroom, you start to head out of the café. As you were about to leave you to hear Remus call out your name. You turn around to see Remus walking up to you cheeks flushed and running his hand through his hair nervously. “Do you need something, Remus?” You ask Remus politely. “Yeah umm, I just wanted to give you something.” Remus gives you a piece of paper with something scrawled on it. You look at the piece of paper to see what was on it.
It read, “Here’s my number xxx-xxx-xxxx, would you like to go out sometime?” with a little moon doodle on the side of it. You chuckle at the little doodle and you look up to see Remus standing there nervously bracing for your answer. “Of course, I will Remus, and I’ll text you when I’m free.” You tell him sweetly.
In a burst of confidence, you kiss his cheek, winked at him and his friends, and turned to leave the cafe. The girls were hassling you on what just happened and you said you would tell them back at the flat.
As you were walking away from the cafe, Remus was still rooted in his spot and put his hand to the spot on his cheek where you kissed it. The boys were cooing at him and saying their little Remus was growing up. “Finally! Now you actually did something about the cute girl that kept coming in often.” Sirius teases Remus. “Oh sod off!” Remus tells the boys off with a smile on his face.

Sirius had been right, after Christmas the days went faster than ever with the first of April arriving so quickly the day itself felt like its own joke. Still he tried to keep positive even if the crippling workload, Auror exam prep and maintaining school students' safety meant he was busy all the time. Then again busyness came with its own perks seeing as even though he’d decided he couldn’t do anything about Regulus it didn’t stop him worrying. He tried not to think about it too much but it was hard not to. Especially since whenever he saw him the boy looked on edge and depressed. With every glimpse Sirius felt a crashing wave of guilt course through him even if he reasoned that seeing him was good. It meant he was still here; they hadn’t got him yet and that was something. It meant even from afar Sirius could still keep an eye on him. He’d even reasoned that come the end of term Regulus might cave and take his brother up on his offer to flee that wretched house, not that he was holding out hope.
For now he was helping those that wanted to be helped. Even without it being the right thing to do it helped him learn, preparing him further for the Auror’s exam which was fortunate, seeing as he’d never been one for public service whilst at school like his prefect friends. Not to mention it felt good to be going into a career where he would be making a difference or at least it would be if he could pass his test.
Early last week McGonagall had pulled him, James and Alice aside to inform them of the set up for their exam date. They’d each be seen in one-hour intervals with the exam involving a half hour written test and the rest doing practical magic with the examiner. Since he’d revised everything Frank had told him to as well as some other topics just in case Sirius wasn’t too worried though he wasn’t awfully fond of being first for the chopping block thanks to his good old family name putting him ahead alphabetically.
Still the sting of alphabetical order was taken away by the fact it meant Daisy could join him, her free period coinciding with his time slot. They were standing outside the classroom he’d been instructed to go to, ten minutes early at her insistence. He was leaning against the cold stone wall, watching her as she tried to think of another test question to fire at him.
‘Okay, tell me the signs of a confusion hex,’ she said, her nervous shifting stalling as she looked at him pointedly and awaited an answer. Sirius fought a smile and the urge to tell her she looked just like Lily when rattling off exam questions. If he was smart enough to sit the exam he was smart enough to know when to keep his mouth shut when it came to Evans women. ‘Disorientation, misuse of correct words and phrases, changes in mood,’ Sirius said with a yawn that made Daisy frown though she pressed on with her interrogation. ‘And how is that different from being under the imperius curse?’ Daisy asked, grimacing as his hands skimmed her sides, pulling her closer so that they were inches apart, only stopped as she placed her hands on his chest to keep him at bay. ‘Aren’t you supposed to be doing your application for the St Mungo’s program?’ Sirius asked, leaning in so that their heads were dangerously close. ‘It’ll wait for now,’ Daisy said, resisting the urge to kiss him. She needed, they needed, to focus even though it was hard to do as he smirked and said in a sultry voice, ‘Dais.’ ‘It’ll wait,’ Daisy said, pulling back as she tried to keep her composure, ‘now come on.’ ‘Oh I can’t think anymore,’ Sirius whinged, his brain hurting with all they’d tried to cram in since breakfast. ‘But-’she protested but he waved her off. ‘If I don’t know it now I never will,’ Sirius said. Daisy frowned. She understood that she was going overboard and she had no doubt that all her friends were good enough to get onto the course but she wanted to make sure it was because of their own merit. That they had done everything they could to ensure their future instead of resting on their connections and greased wheels.
‘Don’t you believe I can do it?’ Sirius asked. ‘Of course I do! With your eyes closed but I just want to make sure,’ Daisy said hurriedly, shoving him as she realised that he was teasing her though that only made him pull her closer, his arms ensnaring her against him as their chuckling died down. They were quiet for a second, just enjoying the moment. Daisy fiddled with his collar, straightening the crease in it as she asked, ‘nervous?’ ‘A bit,’ Sirius admitted, his thumb making circles against her school jumper, ‘but I’m sure it’ll be fine.’ ‘You’ll be great,’ she reassured. ‘And if not you can always cheer me up,’ he said, whisking her around until she was pinned against the wall. ‘Sirius!’ she squealed as he leaned in, their noses touching one another. ‘There’s no one around,’ he murmured before his lips brushed against hers. Daisy pushed him back and exclaimed, ‘so!’ ‘Spoil sport,’ he smirked. ‘Yeah well,’ Daisy started but she shut up quickly as the old wooden door to the classroom creaked open bringing with it a short, balding wizard dressed in a three-piece midnight blue suit. He looked just as startled as they were to see the pair of them fraternising in the middle of the corridor but he recovered quickly as did Daisy pushing Sirius away and straightening herself up.
‘Mr Black?’ the examiner asked, looking between them. ‘That’s me,’ Sirius said, adjusting his own robes before he offered a hand out to the examiner as if the manners and etiquette that had been hammered into him since birth had only just managed to surface above the hormones and revision he had stuffed into his brain in the past three months. ‘Elias Foggerty,’ the examiner said, taking his outstretched hand and shaking it politely before his gaze went to Daisy as he asked, ‘are you also to be examined?’ ‘Oh, uh no I was just going,’ Daisy said, a pink tinge still on her cheeks which deepened as she looked at Sirius who was smirking, ‘good luck.’
And without letting him reply she scurried down the corridor and headed to the library ready to start her St Mungo’s application.
✵✵✵
Fortunately the exam went off without a hitch not just for Sirius but for James and Alice too. They’d all managed to complete the written exam in its entirety and the examiner had been understanding and courteous which had meant they’d been at ease when performing the practical side of the test. It had even been good for Daisy too as her nervous energy throughout the entirety of Sirius’ exam had forced her to focus on her St Mungo’s application which she had fortunately heard back about a week later informing her that her place was confirmed just reliant on her grades being on par with the requirements. And seeing as she was one of the first to hear - some of her friend’s chosen career paths leaving them in limbo - it meant she had some spare time on her hands which she had opted to spend thinking about the end of year prank.
Many ideas had been floated around her but none had captured her heart as of yet and since she and Sirius had final say she was holding out for something good. It was what she was dwelling on this morning, a disappointingly grisly day in mid-May where the light streaming in from the high windows of the great hall was simultaneously bright and dull. She was lost in her thoughts stirring her cup of tea absentmindedly as the boys chatted around her. To her other side Alice and Marlene were talking quietly and Lily was sitting across from her but not participating in any conversation as she scribbled furiously on a piece of parchment. No one bothered to ask what it was knowing it was better not to as it wasn’t liable to be a late piece of work and rather something extra she had assigned to herself as though her work load wasn’t staggering already.
‘I figured as long as we score at least forty before we get the snitch that’ll be enough to make sure we get the cup,’ James said with a mouthful of toast. ‘Yeah but Ravenclaw don’t need that much so we’re going to have to make sure they don’t score more than twenty,’ Sirius reasoned, through a mouthful of bacon. Normally he wouldn't be one to forgo manners but when it came to quidditch he was willing to let it slide. He hadn’t realised just how much he’d missed being part of the team last season and even though his life had been slightly hectic with the transition into seventh year he’d been happy that he’d managed to get back on the squad. And seeing as it was his last chance to play alongside James in an official capacity he wasn't going to miss a moment of it, even if that meant talking with his mouth full. ‘True but I reckon if you and Rufus stay up our end of the field it’s extra help for Simon not to mention you can block anyone from getting close at scoring,’ James said. He was tempted to draw a diagram, coordinating the state of play but he didn’t have time as the morning post started to arrive, his grand tawny owl landing beside him, standing on Lily’s parchment as it graciously dropped a letter in front of him. James gave her a polite stroke before she flew off leaving the thick envelope behind.
‘What is it?’ Sirius asked, turning his head to read the front of the envelope. ‘Mr James Potter’ was scribed neatly on the front but that wasn’t what caught his eye. It was the bright red stamp in the corner that got his attention, the words AUROR’S OFFICE, emblazoned on his brain. ‘Is that?’ Daisy asked, the arrival of the owl enough to snap her from her daydreaming. ‘Looks like,’ Remus said, spying the letter over James’ shoulder. James looked stricken, paling as he turned it around so that he could open it. All eyes fell on him at once, Lily’s work pushed aside as she said encouragingly, ‘Well it’s thick. That’s a good sign.’ James nodded and peeled the envelope open, pulling out the stack of papers that were inside and unfurling them so he could read. Everyone watched as his eyes scanned the page digesting every word until he looked up, looking too stunned to get his words out.
‘Well?’ Peter asked eagerly. ‘I got in,’ he said surprisingly quietly, ‘I’m gonna be an auror.’ ‘Oh I knew you would! Congratulations,!’ Lily squealed pulling him in for a hug though he still looked as though he was going through the motions rather than fully embracing it. A flurry of congratulations came from the group before all eyes turned to Alice who was skimming through her own letter which had arrived not a moment later but had been lost in all the hubbub. ‘Al?’ Daisy asked, receiving a beaming smile from the mousy haired girl as she said, ‘me too! I got in!’ ‘That’s brilliant!’ Daisy congratulated as did everyone else before she rushed off to write a letter to Frank. Yet as the happiness faded all eyes turned to Sirius who had a pleasant smile on his face but a distinct worry in his gut at his lack of letter. Daisy felt her own nerves bubble which he clocked immediately, squeezing her thigh reassuringly as he said, ‘it’s fine.’ ‘It’ll probably come later,’ James said with determination, ‘you know what the post can be like.’ ‘Yeah,’ Sirius nodded, though he wasn’t convinced.
No one seemed to know how to navigate the conversation around this awkward sticking point as they could see James now practically vibrating with excitement but holding back on account of Sirius’ feelings. Sirius was just about to tell him to carry on and have a look at what they’d sent him when he felt a tap on his shoulder forcing him to turn around. Standing behind him was Regulus.
He looked terrible, as he had done since Christmas, with perpetual purple rings under his eyes that made his high cheekbones look razor sharp and his face thinner. His hair was brushed but not styled and his uniform practically hung off his frame instead of fitting him perfectly like his mother would have had it tailored to be.
‘Regulus,’ was all Sirius could think to say, the surprise of him being within speaking distance nearly a year after they last communicated taking away all his logic. Regulus didn’t offer any pleasantries and instead pulled a thick envelope from his robes offering it out to Sirius as he said, ‘this came to me. It just said Mr Black…I didn’t realise.’ ‘It’s alright,’ Sirius said, taking the bulky letter from his brother. ‘Congratulations,’ Regulus said, the ghost of a smile on his lips. ‘Thanks,’ Sirius said, offering one of his own. At that Regulus shifted uncomfortably offering a curt nod before he strutted from the room.
All eyes were on him as he turned around, a mix of emotions inside him. James didn’t seem to be willing to let him dwell on any of the complex feelings he had for his sibling, gesturing for him to open the letter properly. Sirius slid his finger on the partially stuck flap of the envelope, peeling it back open and slipping the letter out. He read through it carefully with Daisy reading over his shoulder.

Warmest Regards,
Elias Foggerty Head Auror
‘I did it,’ he said, looking up at his friends with a smile, ‘I got in.’ ‘Congratulations!’ came a round of replies as Daisy slipped her arm around him and nestled into him for a moment before she pulled back and said, ‘well you know what that means.’ ‘What?’ Sirius asked. ‘Pads my friend,’ James said, capturing their attention, ‘it’s time for a celebration.'
✵✵✵
Given there was a frantic, frazzled air amongst the students of Hogwarts the group decided it was probably better to keep their celebration low key and used the opportunity to have a sleepover in the boys dormitory. After acquiring a boatload of food and drinks from the kitchens they headed to the lads’ room which had been transformed into an ideal sleepover suite. Granted Alice and Marlene would be retiring to their own dormitory at the end of the night but nevertheless they took a seat on the sea of blankets and pillows crammed into the middle of the boys’ four posters. The food was laid out atop James’ trunk from which he’d procured a bottle of fire whiskey he’d pilfered from his father’s liquor cabinet and a mini fire was conjured to give it a campfire feel.
Chancing upon everyone’s good mood Peter even managed to talk them into a game of exploding snap for old times’ sake until eating took precedence. And once their bellies were full they just ended up chatting and drinking, reminiscing about their past seven years in the castle. Considering they were such an integral part of each other’s lives now Daisy couldn’t remember a time before this friendship but as the boys regaled tales of mischief from the first few years of their school career she realised just how short a time it really had been. And yet she wouldn’t have changed it for the world.
In fact she was feeling quite sentimental about the whole thing which is probably why she peeled herself from Sirius and knelt up, all eyes falling on her as she looked down at them, wobbling slightly as she said, ‘ahem.’ ‘Ooh are we going to get a speech?’ Peter asked with a chuckle. ‘Or a song,’ James grinned. ‘Or a strip tease,’ Sirius said, his hand snaking around her thigh which made her topple over with a giggle though she recovered, her glass never spilling. Sirius smirked, ‘speech it is apparently.’ ‘I just wanted to say congratulations,’ Daisy said matter of factly as she raised her glass, ‘to James, Sirius and Alice on becoming the future safety of the wizarding world.’ ‘Our glorious protectors,’ Marlene chuckled, raising her glass. ‘Our glorious protectors,’ came the round of replies before everyone took a drink. ‘Who’d have thought it eh?’ Remus teased. ‘Oi, I’ll have you know I’d protect every last one of you with my life,’ James said, flinging a fruit pastille at the older boy though he managed to catch it, tossing it into his mouth with a grin. ‘Well you don’t have to yet thank god,’ Lily said. ‘Not for another eight weeks at least,’ Sirius added. ‘Is that how long we have left?’ Alice groaned, taking a sorrowful bite out of a liquorice wand and resting her head against Marlene’s shoulder. ‘Don’t remind us,’ James grumbled. ‘Sorry to be the bearer of bad news Prongsy boy,’ Sirius said with a chuckle. ‘Eight weeks and I’ve still not heard back from any jobs yet,’ Peter said glumly. ‘Maybe you can have one of the cast offs from Lily’s many, many, many job offers,’ Daisy giggled. ‘It was only four,’ Lily said, rolling her eyes. ‘Four!’ Peter gawped, making Lily go bright red. ‘Well it’s not like I wanted them, I just applied just in case I didn’t get the one I wanted,’ Lily said though that didn’t make Peter, who had been applying for countless ministry positions and had yet to hear back, any better. ‘Yeah they were too low on her totem pole eh Lil?’ Daisy ribbed, earning her own fruit pastille to the head. ‘Too right my girl deserves only the best,’ James beamed, making Lily blush harder, ‘she’ll be the head of the department for international magical cooperation in no time.’ ‘It’s just an internship!’ Lily protested though James wasn’t deterred, far too proud to care for details. ‘Better than the transport office eh Pete?’ Sirius teased. ‘Oh shut up,’ Peter said, feeling a little put out though Remus came to his rescue as he offered a sizable sigh.
‘At least you lot can keep a job. I can't wait for the first full moon when they give me the sack,’ he said glumly, causing a subdued air to fall over them thinking about his future. Obviously with the way the wizarding world was at the moment no one’s future was certain, their destinies yet to be laid out before them, and yet each one of them knew theirs was more defined than Remus’. Sure he’d secured a job as a research assistant at a large magical library in London but all of them knew that taking a few days off every single month wouldn’t cut it not without explanation, and even that would require a lot of understanding. Still James and Sirius had been determined not to let him fret over it, each concern he produced countered with unfathomable positivity and alternative plans like they offered now. ‘Maybe not,’ Sirius countered, ‘I mean how punctual do you have to be to be a librarian?’ ‘Yeah I hardly ever see Pince knocking around,’ James agreed, ‘sometimes the stack of books to put back is the size of one of the towers.’ ‘It’s more than putting a few books back,’ Remus said dolefully. ‘Well if you’re stuck I’m sure dad could put a word in-’ James started earning himself a stern look from Lily who said, ‘let’s not.’
That had been a debate and a half. In the way that James and Sirius had never quite understood what not being a pureblood could mean they also had enormous wealth behind them which meant that even without a job they’d be fine. James hadn't really seen the issue with helping out a friend, offering Fleamont’s services more than once which had not gone down too well with Remus who despite his struggles still wanted to do things on his own merit. Daisy and Lily had had to intercept more than once as they were now, Daisy continuing her sister’s rhetoric as she said, ‘Lil’s right. All this talk of the future is depressing. Can we talk about something else?’ ‘You’re right,’ Peter agreed, though she didn’t know if it was for Remus’ benefit or his own given the spotlight that had been shone on his own future, ‘it was depressing enough at Christmas never mind now.’ James and Sirius shared a look, a telepathic conversation as to whether they were in the mood to argue or move on before they eventually chose to retreat, laying their weapons down as James agreed, ‘yeah I know, you were right Dais. It’d be better being eleven again.’ ‘Eh I’d settle for fifteen,’ Sirius shrugged, ‘I was fitter at fifteen, right Mar?’ ‘In that case I’d definitely opt to be eleven again,’ Marlene teased, ‘back when I had common sense. Dais did too, right Dais?’
Marlene looked at Daisy who was lost in thought, her mind running over the words that had just been spoken. She could feel Sirius and Marlene watching her with concern, probably worrying that their teasing about their past amorous entanglement had hit a nerve. But she wasn’t thinking about that, she was locked onto an idea.
‘Dais?’ Sirius asked after a moment, trying to inject lightness into his voice though his nerves disappeared as Daisy smiled. ‘That’s it!’ she said. ‘What’s it?’ James asked. ‘The prank!’ she beamed. ‘What about it?’ Sirius asked, the worry gone now replaced by excitement. ‘None of us want to leave right? We want to start all over again, first year to now,’ Daisy asked, her excitement growing as seven confused faces looked at her. ‘Yeah,’ Alice said, her eyes narrowing as she watched her friend unsurely. ‘So why don’t we?’ she asked. ‘Why don’t we what?’ Marlene asked. ‘Why don’t we make it so we’re all eleven again,’ Daisy grinned. ‘Like time travel?’ Peter asked, his brow furrowed as he tried to fathom out how on earth they would manage that. ‘Like a de-aging potion,’ Sirius said, cottoning onto her meaning at once. ‘Exactly!’ Daisy beamed. ‘For us?’ James asked. ‘For everyone, the entire school,’ Daisy said, watching as excitement grew on everyone’s faces so much so that the boys looked as though they might as well be eleven again. All the chiselled features, stubble and height practically vanished, replaced by four giddy faces. ‘It’d take some doing,’ James said, leaning in as though it was just the four of them. ‘A while to brew I’d reckon,’ Remus said, ‘but there’s definitely some books we could look at.’ ‘Getting it into everyone would be a logistical nightmare,’ Sirius added. ‘Especially if we included teachers,’ Peter agreed. ‘But it’s a good idea?’ Daisy asked, causing the four of them to look at her, smiles on their faces which gave her hope. She may not yet be a marauder but she could come up with an approvable idea at least. ‘Dais it’s bloody brilliant,’ James grinned though his smile dimmed as he remembered Lily was sitting there, watching quietly.
He pulled back at once as did everyone else, all eyes falling on the red head as he braved asking, ‘what do you think Lil?’ ‘Well I suppose no one gets hurt,’ she started. ‘And?’ Peter asked. ‘And it doesn’t have to last very long right?’ she questioned. ‘Like a day?’ Sirius suggested. ‘An hour,’ Lily countered. ‘Yeah that’d be long enough for people to get the message,’ Remus agreed though Sirius and James looked a tad put out. Daisy didn’t care as long as it got her sister on board though she still appeared to be deliberating. ‘And if we’re all working on it I suppose it wouldn’t take up too much time,’ she conceded. ‘Is that a yes?’ Sirius asked encouragingly. Lily sighed, ‘yes.’ ‘Good because we’ll need a chief potion brewer,’ Remus said, his academic strengths unfortunately not lending themselves to the subject. ‘Yeah and if we have you Slughorn would give us anything we needed,’ Marlene said. ‘But we all need to be part of it,’ Lily warned, ‘I’m not getting lumbered with this on top of my work.’ ‘Of course not,’ Daisy agreed, ‘you lead the potion and we can do the rest.’ ‘Strategy and planning is a marauders forte after all,’ James said. ‘Does this mean I’m a marauder now?’ Daisy wagered, earning a look from the boys. Then they were banded together, James draping himself across Lily as they conferred before pulling back and donning their most serious expressions.
‘Ooh are we about to see history?’ Alice teased earning a titter from the girls. ‘That you are my dear Alice,’ James smiled. ‘Daisy Evans,’ Remus said. ‘Yes my dear Moony,’ Daisy smiled sweetly. ‘We would hereby like to invite you to join the marauders as a fifth member,’ he said. ‘On a probationary period of course,’ James stipulated. ‘Of course,’ Daisy said deadpan. ‘And your position will be reviewed regularly,’ Sirius added. ‘Oh yeah?’ Daisy asked flirtily which for once caught him off guard making him shift bashfully and her grin to widen. ‘Hmm maybe we need to rethink our position,’ Peter said looking to James for approval who eyed the pair closely. ‘You might be right Wormy,’ James said seriously, ‘can’t have two marauders fraternising. Might distract from the matter at hand.’ ‘Oh don’t worry, I can assure you I'm a consummate professional,’ Daisy said, crossing over her heart. The boys shared a look and then nodded. ‘Well then Miss Evans,’ James said, ‘welcome to the Marauders.’
✵✵✵
After finally landing on an idea the group split their time between revision and planning the prank. Though Lily had declared her reluctance for the task of brewing the potion to fall solely on her she took up most of the work, not quite trusting anyone but her or Daisy to get it right. Which was just as well seeing as some of the ingredients were rare and even if Slughorn had given her the keys to the store cupboard without batting an eye even he would have questions if she went back to him asking for a replenished stock of phoenix tears.
Seeing as Daisy hardly used her part of the room anymore they had opted to run the operation from the girl’s dormitory which was just as well because it turned out to be quite the slog. Working out how much potion they would need to add per person to get a desired effect in contrast to how little they could get away with adding to the pumpkin juice so that it wasn’t detectable meant a lot of trial and error. It had also meant that more than once the boys had volunteered to become floppy haired pre-teens again. Still after a few weeks of tweaking they were ready with nearly fifteen batches of corked and bottled potion ready for use.
The only struggle was logistics. This had been debated for some time but in the end everyone felt there was no point going big too early. If they debuted their prank with a week to go people may generate a laugh or two but given how frazzled students were from exams and the prospect of losing revision time due to a silly prank it may go down like a lead balloon. Plus, Peter had pointed out, the later they did it the less time it left for them to be punished. In the end the consensus was to enact their plan at the end of term meal. Everyone in one place, drinking at one time.
Though that came with its own limitations. Seeing as everyone was expected to attend there would be no way more their absences wouldn't be noticed. Minerva McGonagall may have been getting rid of four perpetual headaches this summer but she wasn’t one to slack on her duties before time. No doubt she would be waiting for them, expecting something to go awry for the last time. In fact this had become so much of a problem that on their last day of exams they were still debating it.
They’d just finished their charms exam [their final one ever which was thankfully not as gruelling as expected] and were following the hordes of other students headed down to the lake, soaking up the last rays of summer sun they would get before they went home in a couple days. The end of year feast was tomorrow and now that they had nothing else to discuss it was the main focus of conversation.
‘What about Pete?’ Daisy asked as she watched him and Remus skim stones along the water’s surface. Beside her Marlene and Alice were laying on their outstretched cloaks sunbathing and James and Lily were nestled together across from them, Lily sitting in between James’ legs with his arms around her though he had his head back allowing the sunlight to swathe his face. She was sitting cross legged on the grass with Sirius beside her, who was fixated on pulling grass from the ground and sprinkling it on her leg though she was sure that was a ploy to keep darting his fingers under the hem of her skirt, a smirk gracing his face every time he went too far and got his hand smacked. ‘What about me?’ Peter said, turning around with a concerned look on his face. ‘We all have to be in the hall right?’ Daisy asked. ‘Well unless we want McGonagall to come looking for us,’ James said, cracking one eye open to look at her as he stopped his sunbathing, now intrigued. ‘But at least one of us needs to be in the kitchen to swap our batch of pumpkin juice for the normal one,’ Daisy continued. ‘Yeah, I asked Bonney’s sister but she said she wouldn’t do it,’ James said. ‘I don’t blame her,’ Lily said, explaining as everyone frowned, ‘well it’s a job on the line for her isn’t it!’ ‘At least she said they’d turn a blind eye,’ James said, ‘more than we could ask for really.’ ‘Anyway,’ Daisy continued, ‘it would only need one of us and one person isn’t too noticeable in a whole table. Pete could use the map, wait until Dumbledore is making his speech and then swap everything out. Once it’s done he can come upstairs and join us.’ ‘Why me?’ Peter grumbled. ‘Because he’s the smallest!’ Sirius said, catching her drift, ‘Dais that’s genius.’ ‘Eh?’ Marlene said, pushing herself onto her elbows apparently intrigued enough to warrant moving. ‘If he entered the hall in his Animagus form he could slip right under the table and transform,’ Sirius said. ‘And there’s bound to be enough commotion that ol’ Minnie won’t notice,’ James agreed. ‘Why me though?’ Peter said, abandoning his rock skimming as he folded his arms across his chest. ‘Because someone might notice a ruddy great stag clattering into the hall?’ Remus chuckled. ‘But-’ ‘Oh come on Pete,’ James pleaded. ‘Why can’t one of you use the cloak!’ Peter protested. ‘Because the teachers would see through any of them in a heartbeat,’ Alice said with a snort. ‘Yeah you’re our secret weapon,’ Daisy grinned, pouting as she gave him her best pleading expression. He deliberated on it for a long moment, looking between three begging faces Sirius, James and Daisy. The rest of the group was looking on amusedly waiting for him to cave. Then with a resigned sigh he said, ‘oh go on then.’ ‘Atta boy Wormtail,’ Sirius grinned.
✵✵✵
Everyone was nervous as they filtered into the great hall. Thankfully the end of year feast was unlike other meals and required everyone to attend at the same time, the whole student body filing in and taking their seats in unison. Given they were seventh years the group stuck to the end of the table, far, far away from the watchful eyes of the teachers which was good because as everyone took a seat and chatter rose McGonagall swept a cursory glance over her house. Yet fortunately after seeing James’ mop of messy hair and Sirius’ long locks she didn’t look much further and took to her own seat satisfied that everything was on the level.
They’d even tried to throw her off by swapping seats with the twins sitting opposite their boyfriends for a change. Remus was beside Lily and Marlene and Alice took to their other side which provided some normality but still it felt strange. And as chatter took hold of the hall Daisy couldn’t help but dwell on that fact. She couldn’t believe different things were now.
On starting Hogwarts the only person she had known was Lily. She had a family waiting back at home for her. She’d been a hot-headed tomboy and yet she’d still felt as though her and Lily were one. If she hadn't nearly died she might still be those things. She might still be comparing herself to Lily. Wanting to be smarter, prettier, more restrained. The boys had helped her see that she didn't need to be any of that. She was good as herself, she was her own person and more so she had realised she didn't need to lose Lily or push her away to feel that.
In fact over the next few years she had no doubt she’d long to have her twin as close as they had been at eleven. After all, they’d been through hardships and pain and managed to rebuild. They were adults now. They’d made friends and embarked on relationships. More importantly in losing one family they’d gained another, not better, but enough. The Evans girls were still together, like they always would be.
Yet the nerves were there. Thinking of the past made her contemplate the future bubbling up uncertainty and worry as if she were eleven again. Those first year, the start of something new, nerves laying heavy in her stomach, clawing at her as she thought about what was next. Well they did until she looked across the table and found Sirius watching at her with a questioning look in his eyes. She nodded on instinct, knowing he was checking in on her making sure she was okay. Only then did he smile, tuning back into the conversation now that he had reassurance, and as he did he took the nerves with him.
It may be the start of something new and uncertain but she resigned herself that it could never be that bad. After all she had him, her sister, her family. That was more than she could ask for even if they were trying to recapture their youth, a feat that grew closer as Dumbledore rose from his seat, causing instant hush to fall as he moseyed to the lectern. Daisy checked her goblet, finding it empty which was a good sign. She hoped Peter could do it. He’d looked awfully nervous when her and the boys had left him in the kitchens after emptying the bottles to the large vat of pumpkin juice that supplied the entire hall but she had faith. He was a marauder after all.
‘Another year over,’ Dumbledore started, any faint whispers growing silent the moment he opened his mouth. All heads were turned in his direction, even the teachers, their gazes locked onto the back of him as he continued, ‘I hope that you have all come away with more than you started the year with. A head full of facts, a heart full of friendship, even a sense of community that you will take with you into the next year and for those of us set to depart our doors, the wider wizarding world.’
As his words hit all of them, resonating with every student there were a few shared glances as pupils risked a peek at their friends. Of course this speech was like any other, the friendships they had made were the same as many students before them and many to follow but Daisy couldn’t help but feel he was right about the sense of community. She was probably just being sentimental but there was something about the community they’d made, the resistance, that made it hit harder. Her little band of friends could be like any other group except they’d built a club, they encouraged good will and rebellion amongst students who would no doubt enter the wizarding world at some point and hopefully choose the right side. Maybe one day those that had opted wrong would join too.
At that she risked a glance across the hall. As her eyes swept along the seats she locked eyes with Snape who she assumed had been looking at Lily given he scowled and looked away the moment she caught him. Daisy rolled her eyes and continued her path spying the person she was looking for a couple of seats further down. Regulus was sitting straight as a board, his eyes on Dumbledore but he turned when he felt eyes on him. They locked eyes for a moment, the same grey eyes she loved though admittedly they felt foreign on him, and then in the minutest of gestures he nodded before turning back to Dumbledore. Daisy smiled to herself, maybe one day.
After that she turned her attention back to her headmaster who was still speaking, his voice more serious as he said, ‘these times are troubled but if one remembers that our friends are our greatest resource against uncertainty we will go far. So, if you could all raise a glass.’
There was the sound of movement and two hundred bodies scrambled to grab their goblets and raise them into the air. As she took hers Daisy took a cautionary glance inside and found it full to the brim with pumpkin juice. It looked the same as any other day, the yellow liquid sloshing around just as normal as ever yet she didn’t risk a look in the boy's direction and willed herself to trust in Peter.
‘To friendship, freedom and the future,’ Dumbledore said. ‘Friendship, freedom and the future,’ came the response call from everyone present before they all raised a glass and then took a sip.
For a moment Daisy didn’t feel anything and started to panic that it had all gone awry. That was until she heard the squeak of a hinge and looked to find the door of the great hall nudging open by a margin. And when she looked back, expecting to find her grown boyfriend in front of he was no longer there, replaced by the softer features of the boy she’d met on her first day. Glancing down at herself she found her own body changed, a much smaller, flatter stature in its place. In fact as she glanced around she found everyone looking the same, except for the first years who were the only ones to escape transformation.
Chatter, laughter and pointing immediately erupted all over the place as friends laughed at their childlike pals. Even the staff did not seem to mind, trying to suppress bemused smiles as they noted Flitwick’s chubby cheeks or Dumbledore’s robes which now engulfed him. Even Hagrid had regressed though admittedly he still towered over everyone and the potion was having trouble with his unruly beard meaning he had a youthful look peppered in stubble.
‘Did I do it? Did it work?’ came Peter’s voice grabbing their attention as he popped up from under the table, slipping into his seat next to James as he checked the hall to inspect his handiwork. ‘It worked on everyone but you it looks like,’ James said, taking in the still seventeen-year-old beside him. ‘What?’ Peter asked looking around the sea of baby faces to find them staring at him. ‘You’ve not changed,’ Marlene said, whipping a compact mirror out of her robes to show him. Peter heaved a groan. ‘Didn’t you drink anything?’ Remus asked. ‘I forgot! I was too busy trying to stay out of the house elves' way,’ he said embarrassedly. ‘Oh well,’ James shrugged, throwing an arm around his friend, ‘you did the rest Wormy. No big deal.’ ‘But now they’ll know it was us!’ Lily said. ‘Let ‘em,’ Sirius said backing James up which made Peter grow visibly less tense, ‘actually I’m quite annoyed we didn’t think to leave us out of it in the first place so that they did know it was us.’ ‘They’re right. Not like they can give us detention is it,’ Daisy said, ‘and if I'm honest I’m kind of weirded out seeing you all like this.’ ‘Agreed,’ Alice giggled. ‘You mean you don’t fancy the pants off me again?’ James grinned, his newly acquired puppy fat making his grin seem cheekier somehow. Daisy snorted. ‘I don’t fancy Pads at this point,’ she countered. ‘Harsh Dais,’ Sirius chuckled.
Though their smiles disappeared at once as McGonagall appeared at the end of the table from nowhere, looking down at them with a scowl on her face before her gaze turned solely to Peter. Even as a pre-teen she looked intimidating, her beady eyes not offset by softer features or cumbersome emerald robes. Not even when she looked at the boy who was practically eye level with her sat down did she look young or weak, instead he seemed to shrink back as if James, an eleven-year-old boy, could protect him.
‘Mr Pettigrew,’ she said, her Scottish trill higher in pitch yet just as firm as ever. ‘Yes Professor?’ Peter said timidly. ‘Is there something you would like to tell me?’ she asked, crossing her arms across her chest and waiting. It was unnerving to watch and for a moment Daisy was expecting him to spill everything right then and there but he didn’t, clearing his throat and sitting up straighter as he said, ‘no Professor.’ ‘Anyone else?’ she asked realising he was not for breaking and casting her net further afield. Everyone was watching them now, not just at Gryffindor table, and yet the marauders stayed silent. Holding their tongue for what felt like the first time ever. McGonagall sighed, ‘very well.’ ‘Actually Professor we did want to say something,’ Daisy said, catching the girl as she was just about to strut off. Everyone looked at her. She could feel the boys’ gaze boring into her face as if wondering what she was going to do. She had learned a lot from them over the years and though the goal had always been to get away with their escapades when the chips were down they never normally backed away. More importantly they never normally missed an opportunity to brag after all hadn’t that been one of the cornerstones for her disliking them. ‘Yes Miss Evans?’ McGonagall asked, a soft arched eyebrow raising just a tad. ‘We just wanted to tell you that well, we’ve loved every minute here haven’t we?’ she said looking to her friends who immediately nodded, smiles on their juvenile faces imploring her to continue. Even Lily, who she expected to clamp her hand over her mouth was smiling shyly, finally allowing her sister a little free range, ‘and we just wished we could do it all over again.’ ‘I see,’ McGonagall said coolly, ‘and for how long do you foresee this desire lasting?’ ‘Oh about twenty minutes?’ James grinned, ‘what do you think Lil?’ ‘Yeah,’ Lily said, smiling apologetically at McGonagall as she added, ‘half an hour tops.’ ‘Very well,’ McGonagall said before she strode away.
As she walked off, gazes started shifting back towards the teachers awaiting further instruction. Dumbledore still seemed bemused by the whole thing and decreed they might as well tuck in, adding a stipulation that should anyone not be transformed by the time they were ready to depart the great hall they should go to Madam Pomfrey for assistance.
Dinner after that was quite the experience. For the most part everyone’s new looks were easy to get used to which meant conversation resumed naturally as everyone started to eat. Yet as everyone chatted, reminisced and talked about the future the spell started to fade with students popping back to their normal selves in random intervals earning a rapture of cheering and laughter as normality clawed its way back.
And by the time dinner was done and all the plates were empty everyone was back to their normal bodies and ages and the marauders’ spot in the history books was secured indefinitely.

“i knew you’d miss me once the thrill expired.”
Pairing: Sirius Black x Reader
x. x. x.
Summary: Your relationship with Sirius is on the rocks, but you loved him and at the end of the day, he was always there. For your own happiness, something had to change.
Genre/Warnings: angst, alcohol, language, toxic relationship
Word Count: ~3k
A/N: this took a lot, and i mean a lot of energy. not sure how i feel about it (i am my worst critic) but i really didn’t want a pushover protagonist. ps... communicating with your partner is hot! let me know what you think (and if you think i should make a taglist) :)
masterlist
“Ravenclaw girl this time. Blonde… I think I recognize her. Couldn’t see the front of her robes, she might be one of the fifth-year prefects. You know I’m terrible with names. Ask James, he finds it hilarious.”
“You should work for the Prophet, Lils,” you said, without looking up from your toast, which was becoming more and more tasteless with every bite. “What were they doing?”
“Talking,” answered Lily pointedly. “He ended the conversation fairly quickly when he saw me looking, though.”
You sighed. This discussion was becoming too routine for your liking, most often with Lily, occasionally with Remus. “Well, if they were just talking, then I don’t see the issue. Lily, it is early. We have double Potions this morning. I really don’t want to deal with your weird suspicions about my boyfriend right now.”
If Lily sensed your underlying irritation, she chose to ignore it. “I just think you deserve better, that’s all. I mean, James–”
You finally turned and stared defiantly into your best friend’s vibrant green eyes. “Lily, I hate to break it to you, but James is the exception, not the rule. Just because he’s some angel on earth doesn’t mean all boyfriends are like that, and that’s not even considering the fact that he’s been hopelessly in love with you since second year…”
Huffing, Lily picked at the fruit off of her plate. “Okay, I get it. I won’t bring it up again.” It was sweet how much Lily cared. James doted on her day and night. It would have been easy to forget about her friend’s love-related quandaries. But that was Lily Evans – always considerate of others.
Truthfully, you were tired. You knew what ‘talking’ with Sirius Black entailed. It did not make you feel as secure as you indicated to Lily. As time went on, it was getting increasingly harder to defend Sirius’s overly-careless behavior. If he wasn’t chatting up girls in random corners of the castle, he stood you up on your scheduled study dates in favor of detention with James. There was only a little comfort in the fact that he wasn’t always like this. If he was, would you have even dated him? Deep down, you knew that as much as Sirius was a thrill-chaser, he was incredibly capable of being a loving boyfriend. For that reason alone, you bore the incredibly painful motions of being in a relationship with him.
He briefly reminded you of his better qualities when you opened your Potions textbook and felt a feathery kiss on your neck. “Guess who?” whispered Sirius sultrily into your ear.
You couldn’t help the automatic flush that made its way onto your cheeks. “Hmm… is it Remus?” you whispered back, stifling a giggle.
“Don’t tease,” he grunted before planting a swift kiss on your cheek. He plopped onto the chair next to you and faced you with a lazy grin. “You look disappointed, love. I’m afraid your usual Potions partner is a bit preoccupied at the moment.” He gestured across the room, where you spotted Lily practically hanging off of James’s lap, distracting herself until the start of her favorite class with his lips.
“They’re hopeless,” you commented airily, in an attempt to disguise your envy. You felt Sirius’s gaze burning into you. “Missed you at breakfast this morning,” you added in a casual tone.
“Oh, well, you know–”
“No, I don’t know,” you interrupted, bitterness leaking from your clipped voice. You always let Sirius off too easily. “But I certainly can’t wait to hear your ready-made list of vague excuses. Please, do continue.” There. He had it coming. He deserved for you to throw him off track.
“Baby, it was nothing,” assured Sirius rather predictably. “Just Pippa asking for help with Transfiguration. Honest.” He placed a hand on his heart in mock sincerity, which only angered you further.
Nevertheless, you chose not to argue. He was incredibly brilliant with his words. There was no way he would understand your plight. Instead, you absentmindedly flipped through your Potions textbook as Slughorn finally entered his unruly classroom.
Sirius seemed uncharacteristically bothered by your lack of response. With a half-glance at James and Lily, he entwined his fingers into yours. “They’re in their honeymoon phase, you know. You really can’t compare.”
“There is no comparison, Sirius. James prioritizes Lily. I can’t remember the last time you prioritized me,” you whispered. There was a finality in your tone that you hoped he would hear. It was the most you were willing to discuss the matter.
Sirius Black was a lot of things, least of all oblivious. He gently squeezed your hand. Silently, he slipped his fingers out of yours, choosing to follow your lead and not pursue the issue any further.
A part of you was proud of the fact that you finally found it in you to voice your concerns to him, but another larger part dreaded the irreversible distance it put between the two of you for the rest of the day. You weren’t necessarily avoiding each other. Though his smiles were significantly more tender, he seemed reluctant to talk, let alone touch you.
Sick of the mental torment you were subjecting yourself to, you stuffed your unfinished Charms essay into your bag and headed to your dormitory, choosing to retire for bed early. Mid-yawn, you spotted a single red rose on your unmade bed. You didn’t have to read the attached note to know who it was from but felt your heart thudding against your chest as you unfolded the small piece of parchment.
I’m sorry. I love you.
There was no signature, but you could recognize his meticulously-slanted script anywhere. You stared at the note adoringly before pressing your lips to the corner of the crumply parchment and marking it with the remnants of your lip gloss.
Suddenly, you were no longer tired. Skipping down the stairs, you found yourself wishing for a certain map that would tell you the exact location of the only person you wanted to see.
Fate seemed to be on your side when you saw him in the common room, his head bowed as if he was praying. “You’re here!”
He gazed up at you, his shoulders relaxing when he noticed the smile on your face. “I’m really–”
You didn’t let him finish. You kissed him hard, throwing your arms around his neck. You felt him smile against your lips. Reluctantly, you pulled away from him. “Don’t worry about it. I was being silly.”
Sirius’s grin widened. “You’re quite low maintenance, y’know. I thought it would take at least a week and a hundred roses. And if not roses, then daisies, sunflowers, peonies… I was ready to pull all the stops. For future reference, a good snog is all it takes to win me over.”
You laughed heartily, though you struggled to keep up with his train of thought. You always appreciated his good-natured ability to poke fun at the gravest circumstances. “I just missed you.”
“Me too, darling. I’ll do better this time, I promise.”
☆
True to his word, Sirius showered you with a level of affection that could rival James’s for Lily. He spent every spare moment with you in his bed, sneaking into the kitchen for secret dinners, and pushing you against bookshelves in the back of the library, homework-be-damned.
On Tuesday night, you sat on the Astronomy Tower. You glanced at your watch, realizing that Sirius was nearly an hour late. Your eyelids were drooping shut. It had been a long day. Everything in your brain felt scattered. You could’ve been catching up on the mounds of schoolwork you were now falling behind on. Sirius… Did he say midnight? Did you hear him correctly? Maybe he meant for you to pencil it in. Maybe he was hurt. Was it Remus? You stared at the sky, peering at the crescent shape of the moon. It taunted you. Stop kidding yourself. He’s not coming.
Just as you were about to call it a night, Sirius stumbled into the Tower and onto the floor. Startled, you helped him up. “There you are! Are you alright? I was so worried… Are you drunk?”
His grey eyes shone in the soft moonlight. The cloudy expression on his face paired with the sloppy grin he sent your way spoke for him. “Lost track of time… we snuck into Hogsmeade,” he slurred. “Rosmerta slipped us some firewhiskey. Here, I brought us a bottle...” He reached into his robes, only to come out empty-handed. “Uh-oh… finished it. Sorry, baby.”
You processed his words very slowly, realization dawning on you with the weight of heavy bricks. “Un-fucking-believable.”
“Hey! We’re all of age.” He threw up his hands in surrender and widened his eyes innocently. “Next time, darling. I promise.”
“It’s not about the fucking drink, Sirius! You’re here so you obviously haven’t forgotten that we had plans tonight! I don’t care if you wanted to go to Hogsmeade, but you should’ve told me. I’ve been waiting here like an idiot for an hour. I’m exhausted!”
“Told you,” he grumbled, now irritated, “we lost track of time.”
You stared at him, unable to comprehend his complete shift in attitude. “Whatever,” you said finally. “I’m going to bed.”
Spinning on your heels, you swallowed the lump in your throat as you prepared to march away from him with your chin up. Before you could take too many steps, however, a firm hand grasped your wrist. The intensity of the force pulling you back to him felt so otherworldly that you could hardly believe it was a wasted Sirius.
You had a fleeting thought of pushing him away but instead tilted your head so he could pepper kisses onto the crook of your neck. “I’m sorry,” he whispered over and over again, between his fluttering pecks along your jawline.
His lips found yours. His hand released your limp wrist as his fingers gently trailed up your arm. “So beautiful,” he murmured, gazing directly into your eyes. You practically melted as your body fell into his. Like always, his arms were ready to catch you, drunk or otherwise.
☆
“No Sirius yet?” asked your mother, sipping her drink cheerily.
You refused to look her in the eye in fear of giving something away. “No, not yet. Should be here soon, though.”
“Better be,” said your father, slipping away from a party guest. “He’ll miss cake.”
It was your parents’ twentieth-anniversary party, an occasion made doubly special as their one and only daughter was now officially a Hogwarts graduate. You had planned the party and made Sirius promise that he would not only attend, but also arrive early to help greet your guests as your boyfriend.
You knew that your parents did not initially approve of Sirius, but as your relationship strengthened, so did Sirius’s standing in your family. Now, post-Hogwarts, you were desperate to not only show your parents that the two of you were committed to one another but also feel yourself that your love would endure the many challenges of adulthood.
As the last of your family friends trickled out of your childhood home, you failed to hide your disappointment at his loud absence. Like many months earlier, your mind see-sawed between possibilities, some pathetic, others worrying. You were in the middle of a war, after all. You always believed Sirius’s recklessness would be his downfall.
Fortunately or unfortunately, your worries subsided when you saw him slip into the parlor with a present in hand and a sheepish smile directed at you and your parents. “Happy anniversary! Sorry I’m late, you won’t believe– hey, where’s the party?”
“It’s over,” you announced bitterly.
Your mum and dad sensed the tension and tactfully exited the room. “We saved you some cake, dear,” your mother said to Sirius, after politely thanking him for his present.
“So,” you started as you heard your parents’ footsteps fade away, “where were you? Actually, don’t answer that. Let me talk first. This was important to me, Sirius. You knew that! What will I say to Mum and Dad? Don’t I matter to you at all? Is it always going to be like this?”
“Slow down,” whispered Sirius. “I’ll explain everything – just listen! I was with James, okay? We were only mucking around on the bike. I was on the way, I swear! But then these Muggle Aurors – police, they’re called – they started chasing us! We were getting away but these three blokes – Death Eaters – caught up to us. Long story short, we got into quite a scuffle and…” He looked at you in an attempt to gauge your reaction.
Your mouth hung open as you absorbed his story. Regardless of your anger, he presented a legitimate case for himself that you could not quash. “Death Eaters? Thank Merlin you’re alright. How on earth did you get away?”
“I’ll tell you everything. Your mum mentioned something about cake?”
You stood on your toes, wrapping your arms around his waist and laying your head on his chest. “In the kitchen,” you answered softly. “I wish you would be more careful.”
He kissed your temple. “Don’t worry,” said Sirius dismissively, “I handled it, didn’t I?”
☆
“So, what do you think?”
You and Sirius were standing in the middle of his new studio flat. Primely-located and newly-furnished, it was the picture-perfect bachelor pad. Sirius now had a place to call his own, thanks to a bountiful inheritance from his Uncle Alphard. The walls were bare and the lighting dim, adding an overall sensuality to the atmosphere.
“It’s nice,” you remarked sincerely, smoothing his plain black bed sheets. You peeked into his wardrobe, smirking to yourself as you noticed it was half-empty. “Lost the rest of your clothes, babe?”
“No,” answered Sirius quietly. “It’s for you.”
“What is?”
“The closet space. It’s for your clothes.” His voice was barely above a whisper.
“For when I come to visit,” you amended automatically.
You turned to see Sirius scratching the back of his head. “No, for when you live here. With me.”
“W-What?” Your mind was reeling. You leaned against his side table to steady yourself. “Me? Move in with you?”
“Well… yeah,” said Sirius as he slowly regained his signature confidence. “We’ve been together for ages, seems about right. Besides, James and Lily are getting a place together.”
You did not understand why you weren’t over the moon. It was what you always wanted from him – a tell-tale symbol of his otherwise-flaky commitment to you, a sign of your sparkling love. It was the beginning of the next chapter of your lives, and you were meant to start it together. On paper, it was perfect. There was no explanation for the sinking feeling in your stomach.
Suddenly, the words that would never come were on the tip of your tongue. The answer was clear as day. “No.”
“What?”
It was an extremely difficult task to catch Sirius Black off-guard, a feat you used to motivate your argument. “No, Sirius. I won’t move in with you.”
Shock was written all over his face. “What the hell? Why?”
“Because… you didn’t even ask me!”
Sirius stared at you blankly for a long moment before bursting into laughter. “Alright… (Y/N), will you please do me the honor of sharing an address with me? Is that it, then? Shall I get down on one knee?”
“No, Sirius. That’s not the point,” you said firmly. “The point is that you didn’t ask me. You just assumed that I would say yes – don’t interrupt. I know we’ve been together for years, but can’t you see? You make me so incredibly happy and yet, so unbelievably unhappy at the same time. You’re so good to me, and then so horrible, and then amazing again… I can hardly keep up anymore. I’m a fucking doormat and I’m sick of it! It’s humiliating. I’m tired of feeling humiliated in front of people I care about. It’s starting to become too high a price of being in love with you.”
You ended shakily, afraid to look at him. When you dared, you saw him wearing an unfamiliar expression. The silence washed over you both for an eternity. You had the horrible thought that perhaps this was it. Perhaps, you crossed a line. Maybe he hadn’t noticed how broken you both were, how broken you were, and now… well, he couldn’t unsee it now. You were over. Without a word, you headed for the door with your head down.
“Wait,” shouted Sirius hoarsely. “Don’t go. I-I’m not sure what to say to make you stay.”
“Try being honest,” you whispered weakly.
He swallowed nervously. “Okay, here goes. I know that I haven’t put enough effort into this relationship… I know that. I realize that I take you for granted and that you deserve better. I don’t blame you for thinking that. I would never have blamed you for thinking that. But here’s the truth – I am so far gone when it comes to you, you have no idea. I am so in love with you. I think about you morning, noon, and night. And the thing is, here we are, fighting for Muggles and Muggleborns and the good of the world… but above all, I am so utterly afraid of losing you. I think that’s why, actually. That’s why I keep you at arm’s length. I don’t think I mean to, but it just happens. Because I’ve never met anyone who loves me as much as you do, not even my mother. Especially not my mother. I’m torn between keeping you close and pushing you away because the truth is, you’ll always deserve better than me. And I’ve always been afraid of you realizing that.”
His truth was careful but sincere. Your hand slipped off the doorknob. Still, it was not the first time Sirius had rendered you speechless. “How do I know you mean it? That it’s more than just words to you?”
“Let me prove it to you,” he said meaningfully, grey eyes glistening.
You took slow steps toward him, and he embraced you with the hope of filling all the gaps he may have left open. “Okay,” you said, your voice muffled into his shirt. “Just… leave the closet half-empty for a little while.”

As y/n was walking down the crowded corridors to Transfiguration right after Charms, she had accidentally bumped into someone making their things fall out of their hands.
“Oh I’m sorry about th-“ y/n words had died in her throat as she saw who she had accidentally bumped into and was hastily helping them pick up their stuff.
Unfortunately for y/n, it was Kayla Queen, a 6th year Ravenclaw she was friends until 3rd year. y/n and Kayla had ended on bad terms in 3rd year when she kept ditching y/n at Hogsmeade for other people.
⋆﹥━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━﹤⋆
[FLASHBACK TO 3RD YEAR]
“Hey, Kayla! Wait for me!” y/n exclaimed while running down to the courtyard towards Kayla and the group of Ravenclaws y/n would hang out with if she wasn’t with the Marauders.
“Did you forget to tell her?” one of Kayla’s friends asked.
“No, I couldn’t find the time to tell her and you know how much I don’t like her,” Kayla mutters to the group before y/n walks up to the group of Ravenclaws.
“Oh good, you guys stayed. For a second I thought you were going to leave me behind.”
“About that y/n, we really don’t want you coming to Hogsmeade with us anymore,” Kayla tells y/n. “We don’t really feel comfortable with you coming with us,” Kayla tries to let her down gently.
“Oh, I-, umm okay. Well, I hope you guys have fun.” y/n said trying to mask the hurt on her face and smiled tightly at them and motioned to them that they could leave.
The Marauders were late when leaving for the courtyard so it was a surprise when they saw y/n sitting on the steps crying silently in the direction where the people she thought were her friends left.
Y/n heard the familiar footsteps and voices of the Marauders, and she hastily stood up and attempted to wipe her tears away before they saw but she was too late and they already saw.
Sirius was the first one to notice the tears and immediately quickens his pace until he reaches you and pulls you into a fierce hug and the rest of the Marauders join. y/n starts to sob into their arms and they pull her tighter in their arms until she eventually calms down and they pull away.
“Hey guys, I thought you would be at Hogsmeade already?” y/n smiles at them tearfully.
“Well, you know how Sirius likes to spend extra time on his hair,” James says and Sirius pushes him playfully which makes y/n chuckle at them a bit.
Peter was about to ask why y/n was crying but Remus and Sirius shot him a look saying not right now. They mess around with each other to try to cheer up y/n and it works when she sees Sirius and James wrestling in the pile of leaves that Filch had cleaned up in the courtyard.
She laughs and smiles brightly and the Marauders know that they did their job. Sirius gets up and brushes off all of the leaves.
“Ah, there’s that smile I missed,” Sirius says and pulls y/n into a hug and ruffles her hair.
“Sirius stop!” y/n voice rings out along with Sirius’s laughter and as they pull out of the hug, y/n notices a stray leaf in his hair and plucks it out for him. Sirius’s cheeks flush a little bit, he scrunches his nose at the leaf and says “ That is the only time I’m letting you touch my hair.”
y/n barks out a laugh and Sirius smiles unconsciously and the Marauders look at this scene and look at each other knowingly. That moment is ruined as Filch’s voice bellow out “WHO JUMPED IN THE PILE OF LEAVES!!”
They look at each other with the same look on their face. “RUN!” James yells out.
They start to run to Hogsmeade to get away from Filch and all you hear is laughter leaving the courtyard and y/n day was made better
[END OF FLASHBACK]

“Oh it’s you,” Kayla said with disdain laced in her voice.
“Yeah, it’s me don’t sound so happy about it.”
“So did you and Sirius break up yet?” Kayla had suddenly questioned out of nowhere.
“No, not anytime soon. Why’d you ask Queen?” y/n raised an eyebrow and asked confused.
“Well I just wanted to let you know personally that we hooked up at the Gryffindor party last Friday after the match,” Kayla said with smirking.
y/n started to laugh in Kayla’s face. Kayla was looking at y/n like she was crazy. She had no idea why y/n was laughing so hard.
“What are you laughing for?!” Kayla exclaimed confusingly looking at y/n.
y/n had calmed down and said, “ Oh wow Queen, that was a really good joke I’ll give you that, have you ever thought to be a comedian when you graduate?”
“You don’t believe me, Spade?”
“You’re right I don’t. But I can recall that I was the one hooking up with Sirius at the party. Oh! and I just remembered that we had actually left the party early and headed to his dorm, and we were in there all night.” y/n said smugly.
Kayla had a flushed face clearly embarrassed being caught in a lie.
“So this was a nice chat and a very convincing lie if I do say so myself Queen, one of your best ones as of late” y/n said sarcastically. “But I have to get going to class now since this was a waste of my precious time. Ta Ta for now Queen!” y/n said as she was turning to continue to her next class.
Then she heard a hex being fired at her. y/n had dodged it before it had hit her and turned back to see Kayla with her wand out and pointed at her.
“Really? you want to duel me in a middle of a crowded corridor?” y/n asked.
“Yes I do since I’m better than you at dueling,” Kayla said smugly.
Even though y/n was deemed the best dueler and the most powerful witch of their year, she decided to humor Kayla and proposed a different idea.
“Okay you and I both know I can beat you in a duel, so why don’t we fight without wands or magic?” y/n said with a slight smirk on her face.
“What you mean like the muggle way?” Kayla said.
“No the werewolf way. Yes, the muggle way!”
At this point a small crowd had formed as this was playing out, and included in the crowd was the Marauders wondering what was going on with y/n. But neither of the rivals noticed the crowd form.
“Fine I’ll fight you,” Kayla said with false confidence.
As soon she had said that Kayla had thrown a punch and punched y/n in the face. y/n stumbled back a bit and shook off the hit quickly. Then Kayla went back in with another punch but was swiftly caught by y/n with a smile on her face. This made Kayla falter and with this, y/n and twisted her arm and pushed her away from her.
Kayla was infuriated and embarrassed. So she went back in for another punch but it was dodged and she got hit in the gut with a quick punch in the abdomen. Kayla had the wind knocked out of her and with this advantage, y/n used this as her opportunity to take her arms and pin her to the wall of the corridor. Kayla felt humiliated but it didn’t stop there. y/n had put her forearm up to her throat to keep her pinned but not enough to hurt her. y/n put her head next to Kayla’s ear and whispered,
“You really don’t know when to stop lying to yourself if you thought you could beat me, it was fun toying with you and if you ever make up lies or rumors about me or my relationship, or I’ll bring out my daggers and it won’t be a pretty sight.” y/n had let go of her and she straightened out her uniform and started to walk away.
As y/n was walking away, Kayla couldn’t help but get the last word in. “I hope you rot in hell you conniving bitch.” y/n had summoned a small throwing knife and it had grazed her cheek and was lodged into the wall beside her.
“Put into perspective I never miss so kindly shut the fuck up and go run into a reading nook where you belong,”y/n warned with a slightly crazed smile on her face.
y/n had finally noticed the crowd and bellowed out “Well the show is over now! Go on get to class!” The crowd immediately dispersed and the Marauders came up to y/n.
“Who knew y/n/n knew how to fight the muggle way?”
“That was scary but I’m slightly turned on right now.”
James and Sirius said at the same time, James in slight confusion and disbelief and Sirius with a slightly scared but lingering desire in his tone. Everyone turned to Sirius with a confused look on their faces.
“Well now you guys know so don’t try anything or might get the same treatment.” y/n said with slight humor in her voice.
“How did you even know how to fight like that?” Remus asked politely.
“Well, my mum and dad wanted my siblings and me to just rely on magic so they made us train and learn how to fight hand to hand and with weapons.”
“What kind of weapons do you know how to use?” Peter had asked.
“Let’s just say I know how to use a good amount of them”
“Well can we get an estimate on how many weapons?”
Lily interjected, “Why would you even fight her y/n! You know Remus and I could have given you detention!!” Lily scolded her for the fight and she didn’t want to know how many weapons y/n knew how to handle.
y/n rolled her eyes “Well you guys didn’t really do anything, and plus I know if I didn’t put her in her place she would have continued spreading false rumors.”
“Well we better be off we are really late for Transfiguration,” y/n said.
They all started to walk toward the Transfiguration classroom but y/n found that Sirius was oddly quiet.
“Hey, Padfoot you’ve been oddly quiet?” y/n asked.
“I don’t know whether or not if I should be scared by you or just really turned on right now” Sirius responded
y/n and the rest of the marauders started to burst out in laughter, “ I think it might be both Pads,” James said while clasping his shoulder trying not to fall over as he was laughing.
Lily rolled her eyes at the group’s antics and y/n was just enjoying this moment with her boyfriend and her friends.

Not that you’ll be any good at it. I mean you’ve been a witch for five minutes,’ Petunia said, spite dripping off every word which made tears brim in Lily’s eyes, threatening to spill over at any moment. Fortunately for the redhead she had a defence that came in the shape of her twin sister Daisy, who came into the room at that moment, her arms laden with clothes that she dumped on the bed beside Petunia as she said, ‘that’s sort of the point of school. Ignore her Lil.’ ‘Ignore her Lil,’ Petunia mimicked. ‘Oh stuff off Tuney,’ Daisy said, flinging a shirt in the other girl’s face. Petunia pulled it from her face quickly and threw it down on the bed, silently seething, an action that only made Daisy roll her eyes. It didn’t surprise her, in fact, she hadn’t expected anything else from the brunette considering all her life Petunia had seen Daisy as an imposition. It wasn’t that they hated one another it was just that they were vastly different. Whilst Petunia was prim and poised Daisy was uninhibited and humble. Their personalities alone caused friction which often left their sister, who was an odd mix of the pair of them, in the middle though admittedly Lily tended to side in her twin’s favour which was evidenced as she huffed, ‘oh stop it you two!’
It wasn’t an outright allegiance but her reluctance to let Petunia’s tirade of goading continue was enough to make the older girl’s face wither as if she was sucking on a lemon, though admittedly she had looked like that since their eleventh birthday.
‘Well she should stop trying to make us feel bad for getting into school,’ Daisy argued. ‘I don’t care that you’re going to that school,’ Petunia sneered, ‘if you two want to be freaks like him then fine.’ ‘Sev is not a freak,’ Lily said dejectedly looking at Daisy who gave her a reassuring smile. It was a sentiment she didn’t quite agree with but she knew how much the boy meant to Lily so she played along.
‘You’re just jealous,’ Daisy said in a sing-song voice, smiling as Petunia’s face fell into a scowl. ‘Jealous of you learning the meaning of abracadabra,’ Petunia scoffed, ‘I don’t think so.’
And with that, she flicked her long brown hair behind her shoulder and flounced out of the room slamming the door behind her. Daisy rolled her eyes and continued throwing things haphazardly into her suitcase as if nothing had happened. Eleven years of Petunia’s tantrums meant that she was barely phased anymore but as she glanced towards her sister she could see that she didn’t feel the same. Her hands had stopped, meaning that the school shirt she had been folding now hung limp in her fingers as she stared into the middle distance. Daisy watched her for a moment, hoping that whatever worries she was having were just a momentary thing, but when she failed to move she sighed, putting down the book she was holding so that she could sit down on the bed next to her sister. Given that their room was the smallest in the house [Petunia had argued her case better than them] and currently littered with everything they owned it was a squeeze but she sat beside her anyway watching as her sister stared at the mess on Daisy’s bed unblinkingly.
‘Lil, she’s not right you know,’ Daisy said hoping it would snap her out of her trance. When it didn’t she reached up and moved the girl’s fiery red locks off her shoulder and out her head in its place before taking her sister’s hand in her own. ‘What if she is? What if we’re rubbish witches? I mean there’s bound to be people better than us. People who have grown up with magic all their lives. Like Sev-’ ‘Yeah but it’s not like Sev could use it. Not really. He said himself he’s not allowed to use a wand until he goes to school,’ Daisy reasoned.
‘But he still knows more than us,’ Lily sighed. ‘So we’ll study extra hard,’ Daisy said. Lily looked down at her sister with a quirked eyebrow.
‘Okay, you’ll study extra hard and I’ll copy off you,’ Daisy smiled. ‘As always,’ Lily said squeezing Daisy’s hand.
They fell quiet for a moment, the pair of them thinking of what was to come, at least that was what Daisy had been thinking of. Lily however seemed to be dwelling on the crossed word with Petunia still as she said with a sniffle, ‘Sev was right. Tuney is just jealous.’ ‘Like when you got the part in the nativity over her,’ Daisy agreed. ‘But I should be Mary-’ ‘But I should be Mary-’ they echoed in unison. The pair burst into a fit of giggles that they couldn’t stop until each had tears in their eyes and aches in their sides. After that the sad moment seemed to be forgotten and the pair of them headed back to the ginormous task of packing their lives up for school. Well, Lily did, wiping her eyes quickly before she went back to folding. Daisy however flopped back onto her bed picturing the look on Petunia’s face as she and Lily left in the morning for the start of their lives.
She couldn’t wait.
