In some places it's been used in a derogatory way, much like gay, lesbian, faggot, and many other words used to describe ourselves.

I won't tell anyone they have to personally identify as queer, but many have reclaimed it and what the 'queer is a slur' folks often ignore is that applies to many of the words used to describe ourselves. They don't have to use it but to come onto any post/discussion that uses the word queer and talk about it being a slur is ignoring the history of all the words we've used to describe ourselves.
