I have another Zelda question! One thing I remember from my FFN days about ten years ago is that there were...a lot of Link/Sheik fics except that Sheik was always 1) male and 2) a separate character from Zelda, which kind of defeats the entire point. At the time I just thought it was weird, but looking back I'm convinced that it was just plain old misogyny. I've since found out that there's apparently been a debate about not only Sheik's gender but their identity and since you've been around longer in this fandom than I have my question is why? Is it just sexism - stripping Zelda of her agency by flat-outing ignoring that she survived the seven years as a Sheikah - or is there something more to it?

Ah, the great 'is Sheik really Zelda' debate, I do remember that pretty strongly too, though it's been quite some time since I last ran into it.

So back when OoT came out in 1998 in North America but I don't think I played it until 1999 or 2000? Probably 1999, I have strong memories of playing it when I had the chicken pox and I think I was 10? Anyway, I wasn't particularly active in fandom at the time, but a few years later as I started getting more internet savvy and finding relatively safe for preteen me fandom space, I encountered what was basically an ongoing debate over whether Zelda and Sheik were the same person.

I do think there was some genuine confusion in there and belief that Zelda switched places with Sheik due to them having different eye colors and the argument being made that Zelda used the triforce to swap their places? It's been a very long time so I've forgotten a lot of the debate points that were made. I'm sure there was some mentioning of the quick change clothes and Sheik's lack of boobs (this honestly could have been when I first learned what binding is? look at his outfit, Sheik is totally binding) but, yeah. There were a lot of people in strong denial that Sheik and Zelda were the same person.

You would think, quite understandably, that the introduction of Zelda into the second Smash Brother's game - Melee, for the Gamecube, released 2001 - would have laid this debate to rest. Part of Zelda's moveset was that she could turn into Sheik mid fight. And part of Sheik's moveset was that he could turn back into Zelda. If you wanted to play as Sheik then you had to choose to play as Zelda. Same character - literally - case closed. But, well... *rolls eyes*

in hindsight, yes. There is a lot of misogyny in how the Sheik is secretly Zelda plotline gets rejected or otherwise ignored by some of these 'fans'. The people who do this are, as you said, stripping away Zelda's agency in the OoT plot line, flattening her out into a damsel in distress who is ignored by her father as a Cassandra-like figure and whose only real contributions to the plot are writing the letter that gets Link access to Death Mountain and throwing him the Ocarina of Time. They are saying only a man could work as Link's partner as an adult, giving Link the information he needs to access temples while Sheik is also doing his own part to protect the people of Hyrule (such as trying to protect the people of Kakariko when Bongo Bongo escaped the well). All Zelda was good for is sitting around looking pretty, waiting for her people to be rescued.

But I think there's also a lot of transphobia wrapped up in there. Specifically towards the idea of a bigender, nonbinary, or otherwise transmasc reading of Zelda. Sheik seems very comfortable identifying as a man. Zelda seems similarly comfortable identifying as a woman. Princess Zelda is the character for whom the game is named and while it's a traditional trope for princesses to disguise themselves as men in stories, it's also traditionally a very genderqueer and trans friendly trope.

Some examples of that trope in action elsewhere: Princess Ozma from the Wizard of Oz is forcibly and magically disguised as a boy by her kidnapper; Léonide from the Triumph of Love (Le Triomphe de l'amour, originally from the 1700s but more recently remade as a musical) disguises herself as Phocion and romances people of both genders; various fairy tales including a rather interesting tale of Romanian origin about a princess who goes on many adventures, including rescuing princess Ileana, and is transformed into a man by a friar who cursed her for a theft... and so now a man he weds the princess Ileana. And there are so, so many more examples. And each one has some element of queerness - and, more often than not, transness specifically - running through it.

By treating Zelda and Sheik as separate characters, Zelda's association with transness and bigender/nonbinary identities is erased. She's made to be only a woman who has only ever identified as a woman and whose plot importance is as the giver of tasks alone. And Sheik is made to have always been a man, despite playing a magical harp - an instrument commonly associated with women and femininity - and the bandages around his chest that are a pretty blatant sign he's binding his boobs flat. So even if he's treated as a queer man in the fanfic, separating Sheik from Zelda is still a deliberate erasure of the character's trans aspects.

So to sum it up (TLDR time), while treating Zelda and Sheik as separate characters absolutely reeks of misogyny... it's also massively transphobic too. And given the way transmasc identities are still being treated today (particularly given the lateral aggression they receive), it's unfortunately not all that surprising that a transmasc/bigender/nonbinary reading of Zelda has been outright ignored over the years in a lot of Sheik/Link fanfics.

I have so many headcanons on their designs and such so just bear with me

- I honestly see Astro as a sort of centipede, a nocturnal arthropod that is actually pretty chill if you don't antagonize them. I also see him as having ADHD combined with narcolepsy, he's always moving his hands underneath his blanket and his mind is always racing despite constantly being fatigued.

- Razzle and Dazzle are rats, why? The rat king phenomenon! This is one of my only voice headcanons but they sound like ENA, specifically the newer one

- Dandy is a False Dandelion. I also base my design of him on a Ammit, which has the head of a crocodile, the upper body of a lion, and the lower body of a hippo, his Twisted form reflects this the most. I also see Dandy as bigender. Him and Sprout are also brothers with Sprout being the older one.

- Speaking of Sprout, I honestly see him acting like a MMO healer while on runs (Examples; “No, I'm not out of tapes, I just don't like you”, “If you get in the way you deserve to get hit”, “You got one shot, I can't out-heal stupidity”.)

- Shelly has other dino features, although it's actually based on cephalopod’s using tools, her tentacles hold onto replicas of fossils that give her the illusion of having a tail, horns, etc, and she can change them out. Also she has ADHD, she just matches the symptoms more instead of autism (Autistic and even AuDHD Shelly's are valid tho).

- Vee has high functioning ASPD that's comorbid with Autism, yes I did as much research as possible as to not demonize either, but I personally see her with these two disorders, as due to being a robot she doesn't feel complex emotions and has a weak sense of right and wrong (outside of her programming, that is), she doesn't feel guilty for being blunt, rude, or for not noticing others feelings, but she does try to make up for it if someone points it out, even if she doesn't feel bad about it.

- Pebble is a Toy Poodle, and Coal is a Saint Bernard, with Pebble being a service animal and Coal being a search and rescue mountain dog, in the cartoon they were both used to show kids how dogs can help people outside of being companions, that service dogs shouldn't be distracted or pet without permission, and that they shouldn't be scared of working dogs in certain situations no matter how big or intimidating they seem. Also they're very much ‘Old dog, young dog' dynamic.

- Shrimpo has low functioning ASPD and struggles to hide his symptoms. No pronouns and AroAce.

- Gigi is a chameleon, simply because chameleons will grab onto whatever you hand them, self explanatory.

- Goob and Scraps are chimeras instead of being a dog and a cat, Looey is their oldest sibling, no reason for this, it just showed up in my mind and I can't get rid of it, Goob and Scraps honorary circus members as a result. Goob also has Ataxia (Impaired balance and coordination, specifically in his arms, which causes clumsy movements) and Hypotropia (downward facing misaligned eye) which causes weaker vision in his ‘lazy’ eye.

Introducing the Covert Iteration of my Rottmnt oc: Jesse Burnham!

Jesse, in both the og and Covert Aus, is a scientist who works in the fields of bioengineering, zoology and robotics! In the og Au, her main goal as a scientist was to create robot animals so life like that you couldn't tell the difference between what was real and what was fake.

In the Cover Au, she achieves this goal earlier than expected, but instead uses them to work as spy-bots for the times where a mission has to be done discreetly, undercover. They're also mainly used for outside data collection as well!

The main bots that people will witness lurking around the organization are:

Eleanor the Ginger Cat: She's the one used the most for spying besides the incredibly amount of rat bots and Ant Queen bots, as there are very few people in the world that don't like a playful ginger cat. Out of her entire arsenal, she is the most indistinguishable bot from the real thing, so much so that even other cats will mistake her for being one of them, if only for a minute.

The only way you can really pick up that something is off about her is the lack of blinking, and the way other cats will avoid her like the plague.

Hunter the Jaguar: Hunter is less of a spy-bot and more of a combatant bot on the very, very (and that's two very's) few times that Jesse will be sent out onto the field.

He's the heavy hitter, agile and lithe. Not to mention the fact that he is entirely vantablack-the deepest black in the world- save for the soft gold glow between his plates, so it makes it frighteningly easy to lose him in the night or in dark, shadowy places.

Phoebe the Hawk: Phoebe is the most important one, being Jesse's most trusted companion and confidant, she is basically Jesse's right hand bird! She is the bot that does the most arial sweeps, mostly in order to locate any target who might be in broad daylight, but she also can be used to update any joint-tasked sectors on the status of the field from above.

Not to mention, Phoebe was Jesse's first successful project of life-like robot animals, so she holds incredible sentimental value to her.

Even though this isn't even half-not even a quarter-of all the robots she has manufactured, these three bots are by-far the most important ones to Jesse, tactically and emotionally.

One very important fact about Jesse, as well, is the fact that he's bigender!

His masculine days aren't as frequent as his feminine days, but either way he certainly uses it to his advantage! Switching between the two genders (whether or not he feels like one or the other at the time) has always been a reliable disguise for him if Jesse needs to get out and do some personal investigation himself that his animals are incapable of.

Jesse is a natural smooth-talker and liar, which helps with his job especially well!

Another important thing to mention, is that I'm not entirely sure if Jesse would be in any sector himself, or if he's a solo act within the organization. What I do know, is the fact that you are able to request the use of his spy bots no matter what sector you are in, but only at a certain price. (What the price is yet? Not sure, but it's not money, that's what I know XD).

It's very, very, VERY (that's three very's!) rare for sector 5 to ever need his spy bots, as most often than not their missions are combat based (I think??? Correct me if I'm wrong qwq), but I like to think on the very rare times they do need it and DON has to get it from him? All I gotta say is that Jesse shows no fear when it comes to the turtles.

There's a medical reason for that-

I don't think I've ever written explicitly about my relationship with gender on here outside of when I originally came out and shrugged in the direction of some pronouns. now I have a lot more followers and it's tdov so why not.

I'm genderfluid, which for me means that I identify as both a man and a woman. you could call me bigender, but fluid better fits my experience. I've described this before as being 'not nonbinary but extra binary'. gender is a social construct etc but my sense of self is theatrical and oppositional and articulates itself most clearly in reference to / interplay with a polar north and south. kind of like my aesthetic preference for saturated colours and stark contrasts.

I prefer he/him pronouns. I actually don't dislike she/her pronouns but it is almost impossible to thread the needle of being called she/her without being implicitly degendered. they're a double twist not the default please thank you. they're nightmare mode, mostly for other trans people and strictly invitation only. I quite like it/its, and I tolerate they/them from people who don't know me (but it gives me sims negative moodlet).

I don't have a 'deadname' the way many trans people do. I go by Lee these days because it's nice and ambiguous, but that has always been my middle name. I still love my more feminine forename, but it's sleeping right now. It's in a velvet coffin in a thorn-strangled tower. It doesn't bother me to be associated with old work under that name, but it doesn't represent me right now. don't feel awkward if you come across the signs she left behind. my autobiography is a gothic novel.

I snuck in a lil treat of my work in progress housewarden card. The jumpscare it was to toggle my version with the og card underneath, y'all. Am I making my version of pretty much all his cards? Yes. Will they ever be finished? Who knows? Anyways, onto the headcanons...

- Physically, I feel like I changed a lot and not a lot at the same time. I gave him some more scars which I guarantee you are from really stupid accidents.

- Piercing on his ears just cause I felt they fit him and snakebites because (I'm so down bad for them) it gave the illusion of fangs even with his mouth closed. Gave him moles cause they're pretty.

- I textured his hair and gave him a shit ton more because if the og design won't AT LEAST give him fluffier hair, what's the point? Yana Toboso, if you don't give this man a high ponytail in the Clubwear Card, I will hunt you down. Also made his front, larger braids the colour of Cheka's (And presumably Farena's) hair because honestly? They didn't really look similar enough? Also threw in some smaller braid to 'tie' them in more (haha).

- Someone gave him like this cool inverted pupil due to a scene in the movie but I simplified it to basically heterochromia.

- This might be hardly noticeable but I give give him slightly more muscle? I felt it suited him more idk.

- Onto non-physical headcanons, he has 💕depression💕! This is kinda not up for debate given how much he exemplifies the symptoms. Hell, he made me realise that I may have depression cause I was like, "Damn, he's so relatable, not wanting to get out of bed, no motivation to do anything, struggling to care of himself. He just like me frfr- oh..."

- By the way, I see a lot of people talking about Ruggie's reaction to the fallout of Book 2 but I think that on Leona's side, he felt horrible and probably locked himself away for a WHILE. I think his mental state must have been terrible and I'm SO PISSED HIS FCKING PROBLEMS NEVER GOT BROUGHT AGAIN WTF! Well, I'm on Book 4 so maybe???

- Anyways, I saw someone posit he could also be autistic, more on the asymptomatic side which is actually growing on me a lot. Picky eater, doesn't like tighter clothes, not fond of loud noises, smaller things but I'm a fan.

- Really random but I like the idea that he's one of those people who kids love for literally no reason, he just doesn't like to be around them.

- Is actually extremely book smart, though that's kinda already canon but I mean this bitch was a nerd when he was younger. Knows way too much on various topics, especially about his homeland.

- He originally was going to have her hair down but then I realised how many of them had their natural hair already so I gave him dreads? I'll have to render them out at some point.

- Gave her more scars too, since she grew up in a more rough environment. Made his eyes really big and cute 'cause I feel like she can get extras when she hits 'em with the puppy eyes.

- Probably got mad ADHD, has to constantly be fiddling with something or another. Wears spinny rings a lot. He's actually really good at paying attention in class and likes to learn.

- Steals from Leona, whether it's money or items or clothes he leaves out (which, while Leona would never admit, he purposefully leaves out for Ruggie).

- Oh and a post pointed out that hyenas can purr, so have fun with that.

- Ah, I made a reference in the Heartslabyul post about my concern about darker skinned characters with white hair and I was mainly talking about Jack. I also had to make Kiki, and I figured that wolves have pretty naturally salt-and-pepper hair, so why not. I actually love how it looks omg, it's very pretty and marbled.

- Gave him darker skin, since I headcanon him as black but I did see someone who designed him as indigenous so it might change in the future idk. Also it makes his eyes almost glow and I love that for him.

- He gets more scars too, though likely from sports rather than fights or anything.

- He's autistic. Apologies that so many of them are autistic to me, not only am I autistic but like, the way they're written speaks to me. His whole moral compass being the reason for Book 2 playing out like it did was an immediate 'yes' from me. He's my boy and my son and I will fistfight anyone that smack talks him (looking at those Savannaclaw NPCs in one of Deuce's vignettes).

- Oh, I forgot. He listens to K-Pop. I don't know if it?s canon that he has younger siblings, though I totally think he does, but one of them accidentally got him into K-Pop and J-Pop so whenever he's at the gym, that's what he's listening to lmao. Specifically girl groups, he likes them enough that he knows all their names. He insists it's out of respect, which it is but he's also lowkey a stan too lol.

- Generally has a weakness for cute things, even if he doesn't show it. Also a total plant nerd omg. He could instruct you on pretty much any houseplant on how much sunlight and water it needs, seasonal changes, etc.

Final note is that I'll make a separate post about him and Epel, cause I love them and have some headcanons there too.

- Twisted from Rafiki? I think that's his name, the baboon. I'm crying sobbing throwing up that you can't see her eyes in this.

- She got the white hair since the fur on a baboon is directly white and took inspiration from Dislyte's Isis design. Her eyes are a pale gold like her earrings and she has red to blue eye shadow.

- Natural resting bitch face but she's just tired most of the time. She'd probably be the actual vice housewarden as I think her family has been close to Leona's for a long time, though she earned her spot with her own skills.

- Additionally, I wouldn't call her and Leona 'childhood friends' but she's known him for a long time. She's like, concerned about him as he's changed so much but she also worries that it's not her place. As a result, she tries to make sure Ruggie's not taking on too much and handles most of the dormhead duties herself.

- I think she and Jack would be relatively similar in terms of personality, I see her being the gruffer upperclassmen. I think she'd be rather protective of the first years, knowing how harsh the older dorm members can be and she does her best to make everyone feel welcome.

- She and Mandisa are quite close and she convinced them to dye the edges of her hair red. Abayomi wanted touch up hers and managed to get Mandisa in on to lol.

just watched gen V episodes 1-3, lets go opinions nobody asked for!!

I'm all in. It may be my black girl mc bias, but I am deeply invested.

I was really not into The Boys. The color-grading, bleak outlook on humanity, and six millionth deconstruction of superman all felt stale to me, and I wasn't a fan of incels recieving new ammo, no matter how satirical it was.

Watching Gen V though made me honestly want to give it another chance.

My one criticism is the criticism I have with most mainstream film, which is the lack of subtlety. There is a bigender character, a schizophrenic character, and a character with an ED in this show, and that is not even the half of it. I would appreciate this more if the show would talk directly to those audiences instead of seemingly spending the whole show adding footnotes explaining those concepts to the general public. But I can let this slide because a foot in the door is a foot in the door and we really need that right now.

Meta aside, oh my GOD this story. I have never been so invested in my life.

Andre and Cate haven't really grabbed me emotionally, but they're both acted so well that i'm intrigued anyways.

Jordan is really fun for me because she has a story outside of her gender. He's really direct and cool and is the exact character archetype I catch feelings for in media. He's also played by TWO actors who have blended their performances so well that I kept forgetting they were separate people.

Marie, Emma, and Sam are so perfect I could probably write dissertations on them, but for now I will settle for saying Waterworld is almost definitely foreshadowing, and if it's not it's a metaphor.

The DEAN is such good writing. They casted an actress who played a loving mother in bridgerton to be a sneak-attack villain, and I haven't seen such a good twist of expectations since Chris Evans in Knives Out.
