as far as i understand it, keir starmer himself hasn't actually got particularly strong opinions about anything trans rights and has waffled around on the fence about it, but there are a core of quite vocal and influential people within the labour party who care a LOT. so its not so much about winning over the public, its keeping people like rosie duffield happy so his own party don't turn on him (which happened to corbyn, and is a big reason the tories have fucked themselves so badly)

we aren't in america, and we're not voting for who will be PM (unless you are in starmer's or sunak's constituency)! look at your local candidates and vote against ones who are transphobic to show the party that it's not a popular view. if those vocal labour members lose their seats, that sends a pretty clear message to starmer and the rest of the party that it's a problem and will lose votes. if your local labour candidate is very positive on trans rights issues, then try to get their voice into government! don't vote against someone who will help us to punish starmer, change the people he has to answer to.

all the snivelling little starmer apologists will always say "umm well he has to be transphobic to win elections" and like 1. well im glad youve decided us trannies can be the sacrifical lamb on our behalf and 2. its just demonstrably not true every piece of polling done on this shows that the uk electorate doesnt care about trans people one way or another because all their fucking groceries cost a billion times as much

it’s really fucked how I, a childless full-time working adult on a fairly average wage cannot afford to buy a house or even an apartment in the city i was born (sydney australia). it’s fucked that a house in sydney today costs around 14 times my annual wage, when in 1995 (one year after I was born) the average house price was around 6 times the median annual wage. it’s fucked how i’d only be able to afford to buy a place if I shared finances with another full-time working adult (which i don’t), and that this is probably going to be a huge issue when I get towards ‘retirement age’ because the government basically doesn’t give a shit about you if you’re not a landlord with a nuclear family

I miss 2019 when I was actually feeling generally positive about voting labour. obviously the result (nationwide and in my constituency) was awful but at least I could feel pretty good about what my vote was going towards. whereas now I'm voting knowing that labour will certainly win the election and have a good chance at my seat and yet it doesn't really feel good at all :/

Thank you 💖💖 I'm quietly hopeful? We currently have the Labor party in power who are effectively the Australian equivalent of the Democrats. They're finishing up their first term after we'd been through 9 years of the Coalition (our terms are three years, not four, and the Liberal party, who make up the major party in the Coalition, are basically the Republican equivalent. They haven't been able to form a majority government in a while, and they partner with the Nationals, who are a far right party, forming the Coalition), and while they've been imperfect, I think they've done a pretty good job.

Anthony Albanese (or Albo) is the current prime minister, and he's a part of the Labor Left faction, so leans left-wing (although, of course, that's still basically centrist in 2025). He was raised by a single mother in poverty and in government housing, and it makes him an outlier in Australia's political landscape, which is basically a wealthy boys clubs, and I think that's been reflected in his levels of compassion as a leader for Australians, even if I do also think he's fumbled a lot of things too. He tends to get accused of being wishy-washy a lot, and the Murdoch press runs heavily on the idea of him being a weak leader, which international politics certainly aren't helping at the moment, given Albo's not the best at appearing strong in the face of conflict.

We have mandatory voting in Australia though, so everyone over the age of 18 has to vote, and they won the last election by campaigning hard on the quote-unquote 'women's vote', and given this flyer I got given at the train station the other day (before the election was even called lol), I think that's a big part of the plan again:

So yeah, I'm really glad they're focusing in again on that ahead of this election and not relying on the fact that the Coalition is openly misogynistic / has a notorious 'woman problem' to try and secure votes from women. We'll see though.

Also Peter Dutton, the leader of the Coalition, is such a fucking ghoul, I can't believe anyone would vote for him at all.

By not voting, that's essentially saying that you'd be willing to accept a second Trump term where everyone in the LGBTQA+ community gets forced back into the closet, if not outright underground.

Transgender individuals in particular would face being labeled "pornographic."

That’s more of a self report than anything else. Electoral politics won’t save queer people. They won’t save trans people. And they won’t save you.

I would educate yourself. Blogs like @decolonize-solidarity have graciously put so much information about all this on a silver platter, despite it being EXHAUSTING to educate people like you, anon.
