Honestly even though they do travel via spaceships and use various forms of technology, and the whole necromancy magic system is very science oriented when they explained it in Gideon the Ninth, I wasn't really focused on the science-fiction part of the story. For me it was more like fantasy with a useful sci-fi settings.

But now they are really explaining space travel, they are in spaceships and clearly it's getting more space opera vibes and I'm like "oh yes it's a science fantasy story I totally forgot about that" lmao

you know what, I actually will talk about this because it's bothering me. The issue with focussing so heavily on syd and carmy's potential for a romantic relationship isn't that there's something inherently unintellectual about romance or whatever, it's that a lot of people seem incapable of doing that without immediately flattening the story and ignoring or intentionally misreading any and all nuance for the sake of that romance. Every scene suddenly becomes about how it impacts their relationship, every analysis is done through a romantic lens, every frame or line of dialogue becomes about finding some easter egg or hint that "proves" these people should start dating. Their dynamic is absolutely a fundamental part of this show, but if you can only see it as a will-they-won't-they, you miss so much of what the story is actually trying to say with these two.

There are good versions of this story where their relationship is romantic and there are good versions of this story where it isn't, but as soon as you decide them being together is "the point," you lose the ability to actually judge the story for what it is, not what you want it to be.

#like so much of their dynamic (esp but not exclusively in S3) has been about showing the ways that carmy's trauma and dysfunctional #attitude in the kitchen impacts other people and how even though he cares about syd and wants their partnership to work he keeps self #sabotaging and setting himself and by extension her and the restaurant up to fail and replicating the same toxic environments that #he grew up and trained in and this is very much consistent with his character and a natural continuation of the conflicts they've been #having since S1 but because him being shitty with her runs contrary to them getting together suddenly its 'ruining the story' and #out of character and only happening bc the writers just hate to see this ship winning and like. if you really think that i genuinely don't #know what show you've been watching bc it sure as shit wasn't this one. like it hurts to see him do this because you know #they could do something genuinely great together and that he's ruining a really good thing but this is also the reality of where he is rn #if he was just a good and supporting business partner and not deeply dysfunctional it would be wildly out of character #the problem w S3 wasn't that it 'ruined' their relationship it's that it had no clear focus overemphasized carmy's arc at the expense #of the other leads deprioritized the supporting cast while failing to give them their own arcs gave more screen time to #unecessary and uninteresting new 'comic relief' characters and let conflicts stagnate without resolving them or #letting them evolve over the course of the season.#this isn't exclusive to the bear this is a general trend ive noticed where as soon as the 'shipper' part of people's brains get activated #it's like they lose the ability to read the story any other way and it stops being about what's good for the narrative and starts being #about whether or not these two people kiss and anything that gets in the way of that is bad and anything that brings it closer is good #and it's usually whatever but it's really frustrating when the story ppl are doing that to is this good #it also makes people fundamentally incapable of treating any 'obstacle' to that romance in a way that isn't wildly meanspirited and #gross (esp bc those characters are usually women) which is exhausting. like no claire isn't evil or a 'pick me' or 'bad' for carmy #or a useless addition to the story or whatever other nonsense you guys have decided must be true to feel okay. she's a perfectly normal #character and their relationship is exploring some of the ways that carmy's inability to deal with or actually address his trauma #impacts the various relationships in his life. she doesn't even have to be a monster or a narrative mistake for him and syd to be #'destined' for each other or whatever. this isn't a middle school wattpad fic.#im definitely gonna get killed in the street for this but ive been looking for a good reason to spend less time on here so might as well #the bear #sydcarmy #sydney adamu #carmy berzatto

I fucking love how hard it is to categorize me, honestly.

I love when people look at different aspects of my art and go "That was yours?!" Or like, people have followed me for my writing and then see a comic and are like "That's you too?!"

It's a true a delight. I am an enigma. What a joy to my trickstery little soul to be so confounding.

distracting myself from theories on the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins to say that sometimes I dream of myself and a bunch of my friends from university all being professors together somewhere someday and while I know that's highly unlikely in many respects, it's also a good dream and it makes me quite happy to think about :)

#unlikely because I know the academic world isn't set up to allow you and all your friends to teach in the same place easily #and because people's dreams and career aspirations change a lot over time #but also a lot of my friends here at school are more or less aspiring career academics #and the more I relax into that idea myself the more I find that I really do love it #would take a lot of prayer to decide to actually pursue that path but it's something that I'm trying to allow myself to genuinely #desire and pursue if I see no clear reason not to #and my friends here are really great people who I would love to spend my life asking questions alongside #my thoughts #college stuff

While I do think the setup and payoff of Koujaku's route is a successful and good use of subversion (big supporting character throughout the common route, then just gone for most of his own route so, you, the player can experience the strain on his and Aoba's relationship in real-time, mmm, delicious) it does still make me laugh that when you get to Platinum Jail with him he just fucks off immediately.

In hindsight and with all the information after you finish playing it, yes, it makes more sense, but at the time???

my reading of lifesteal season 4 is so personal and involved at this point that even if i was going to post more character analysis i would not know where to start. it would require footnotes to documents that don't exist. listen to luddites and lambs by everything everything and you'll get half of it though

#m #lifesteal #there is just such a compelling and clear thematic line between like. okay #first you need to just accept for me the idea that zam as a character is defined by being trapped running both towards and away from #the same object (mapicc)#and then you have to take mapicc as interchangeable with pain in general but specifically an inescapable normalcy of pain #which is caught up in something zam wants and knows he wants which is the “pure/natural” idyllic version of lifesteal #where every fight is fair competition #and what mapicc has done to hurt him more than the actual stalking and murder and all of that is that mapicc refused to fight him on even #ground (by literally invading and destroying his home so that everything becomes battlefield) in a way that offends his most deeply #held values. AND THEN he reads vitalasy's use of the exploits as trying to take that same thing he fundamentally values about lifesteal #away and he gets incredibly angry with vitalasy for hurting the server itself (pvp becomes functionally obsolete for a while there)#so he plays out the eclipse betrayal framing it in his own mind as another situation where he is the victim and vitalasy is the #manipulator/aggressor and falls back into the kind of jumpy paranoid behavior we as the viewer haven't actually seen from him in a very #long time now (late into eclipse when mapicc isn't an active threat anymore he really does stop jumping at shadows the way he used to)#and seems comforted by the familiarity of it if anything. because what vitalasy was asking of him that made him panic and reject it so #badly was to create a new pattern and step out onto unknown ground but he can't do it #and he retreats back to what he knows. so vitalasy isn't WRONG to read what zam does as victimizing himself #and forcing vitalasy into a villain role that is literally what he is doing #but vitalasy on the other end still has his own entire set of things he is not dealing with #and so the relationship created by these two people is doomed by their inability to look themselves in the eye more than any of the actual #facts of the relationship itself #and the thing zam wants lifesteal to be is not and has never been real. the thing vitalasy wants lifesteal to be is also antithetical to #its nature they are both wrong #but zam is wrong in that he wants to return to an idealized imagined past that does not actually exist #(see also vague historical allusions in his castle and his name and him trying after vi's death to cast off violence completely and return #to the land somehow. and the association created incidentally between stone tools and rudimentary technology)#and vitalasy is wrong in that he's trying to create something entirely new that nobody but him actually wants via the exploit #(see the way that once the exploit is 'out of the box' it can't be put back in and the course of the season is set in motion and any attemp #s to fight it and change that course are futile as allegorical to sudden technological advancement being met with violent opposition)

#shadows of fear #sugar and spice #1971 #horror tv #classic tv #thames #single play #patrick dromgoole #john kershaw #sheila hancock #ronald hines #suzanne togni #ivor salter #janet hannington #i think I'll add the horror tv tag onto these from now on; whilst that first ep (really more of a pilot‚ as mentioned in the tags on that #post) acted more as a kind of mildly creepy suspense piece‚ i feel like we're more comfortably in horror territory here. not supernatural #horror to be clear (i don't remember the series ever going there) but certainly within that realm of 'intended to be unsettling' that most #tv attempts at horror from the era fall into. this is certainly a much darker piece‚ imo‚ than the first one: Sheila Hancock's young son is #missing and her daughter acting very strangely‚ claiming their father took him... something he denies. it's (like all of these episodes) a #cheap production: a couple of sets‚ a very small cast. but the cast here is a winner‚ with the late great Hines wringing real complex #responses from him variously pitiable and loathsome drunken father‚ and Hancock switching between bristling indignation and barely #controlled hysteria. the standout tho is young Togni‚ who gives a quite frankly brilliant performance as the troubled daughter who may or #may not be playing games. she was actually nearly 20 despite playing what is clearly intended to be a 13 or 14 yr old #and appears to have given up acting very soon after this play aired; a great pity because her disturbing‚ mercurial presence here hints at #an actor of real depth and skill. it all ends quite nastily so be warned‚ this isn't a light bit of afternoon telly‚ it's truly dark

everything i learn about tsv (i've only listened to the first ep) makes me INTENSELY scared,,, it seems so well produced and well written that it scares the artist part of me and the surreal "contemporary (it is set in the present, right?) reality but weird and fucked up" thing just unnerves me so much... i can't deal with unexplained absurdity/surreality like that. also the ending being so tragic (it was tragic, right) makes it all feel so... hopeless?

I prefer Guys characterization in the princes path rather then his consort route

I feel like all the routes should've progressed slower tbh but with Guy in particular I feel like it would really work with a slow burn romance

Also, unrelated but MC always falls in love with her chosen consort by chapter 10 like girl you've known this man for 2 weeks

#also the length of time each path spans isn't clear therefore it either feels too fast paced or soon #i kinda wish book 1 consort routes were more figurative like still focused on the progression of their relationship and character developmen #but less focused on the actual establishing of the relationship if that makes any sense #i guess it would have to be different for different characters and the overall dynamic of the relationship but regardless #with 30 chapters + 3 interludes and your chosen ending you would think you can do alot with that #cus 30 chapters is alot and 5 story parts per chapter too #i dont think alot of the stories need tp change if im being honest now #but imagine if each chapter included more subtance not to mention detail to clarify alot of things #overall I thing the book 1 consort routes to felt really filling were Roy or Toa #or maybe knight i remember the first time I read knights route like i was watching a movie cus i ended up really sucked into the story #and the lore of it too #same with Roy #i wish there was more side plot to the consort route cus realistically im not thinking about or doing the same thing everyday even if im #set on a specific path and moving forward towards a goal if that makes any sense #the path or goal in this case being cuffing one if these ridiculously hot men yk like im not gonna be thinking about this man every second #of the goddamn day no #court of darkness #kay just saying shit
