i dont usually write out my personal story interpretations and headcanons of things (i like to draw out the concepts and hope it comes across--most of my words are kept to discord and such) but ive been thinking on my interpretation of hearts blindness and figured its worth sharing here! especially because, from what i understand my view on this is perhaps not in the majority.

ive done a comic relating to this (which ill reblog for further reference) but i personally see hearts blindness as something actively and willfully chosen and caused by heart himself--metaphorically, representing his own avoidance and distorted perception of the reality they live in. a mix of him not wanting to acknowledge it all (consigning himself to apathy) and something like rose tinted lenses... but the lenses are instead a fuzzy, tunneled and dim vision that doesnt provide him the full picture.

a key aspect of my interpretation is that heart actively chose to alter his vision (perception) in this way, AND that it is a permanent shift. its something he learns to work and function with. (this also represents how you cant undo change; you can only learn to live with the new shift in your being). i personally.... really dislike the idea of his blindness being a punishment, and thematically i find him choosing to blind himself far more in line with hearts motivations. hes the sort to do something like that without thinking through the consequences because it helps him cope in the moment.

when it comes to the way in which hearts blindness manifests, i personally hc him having a mix of tunnel vision, light sensitivity (exacerbated and aided by the blindfold), some blind spots (i cant remember the exact name but... spots of vision that are just gone) along with visual snow and floaters. the last two are mostly because i have those and i want to project B:•P

umm but yeah! those are my thoughts on the matter, feel free to add to thoughts if you guys have any!

ffxiv garlemald discourse is so funny because people will go "ugh people just cant stand it when things aren't black and white" and then you look at how the empire are portrayed in stormblood and shadowbringers and its like hm. that seems like a pretty intense and accurate display of violent imperialism to me! Wow I wonder why people in this day and age may find it hard to feel sympathy for them or even hate them on principal. god its such a mystery.

the games like 50/50 to me on how it tackles these themes because I actually like the garlemald arc in EW, I think it has a lot of horrific and powerful scenes depicting how self destructive fascist propaganda and beliefs are, but I also think it doesn't go far enough on some fronts. the garleans' xenophobia is most notably and obstacle to getting them to accept the contingent's help, which is what they're there to do,

but there's never an admission of harm from any garleans on the uuuuuuuuh massive amount of war crimes the nations around them are still suffering from they're just kind of like "we misjudged you...but you actually wanted to help us all along" like yeah thats great now can we get you all some deprogramming because you keep talking about returning to your prime and glory days and I think we need to unpack some stuff you really SHOULDNT return to. im not even really talking about EW proper but the patches where things are a bit more chilled out and people are recovering.

It feels like they wanted to have their critique of imperialism and also have things end with the beauty of human connection and reaching out and these things just don't mesh well because hey a lot of your modern day audience is not gonna like having to treat people yelling xenophobic things at the cast and your character with kid gloves after you showed them hours and hours of the awful things these people's beliefs have done. especially in the present day hoo boy.

anyway the concept of passing is a scam. we will never be liberated until the idea that a trans person's inherent value and worth and validity is directly proportional to their resemblance to a cis person. and i say this not just to those who struggle to or do not fit into that box, but to those who very much do and are counting themselves lucky.

the same way that its unhealthy and unreasonable to expect a same gender couple to conform to notions of what a heterosexual family should be, its unhealthy and unreasonable to have to expect a transgender experience of identity and a transgender body to conform to a cisgender ideal. not only does it further the marginalisation of trans people and drive a wedge in our community, but it's an unhealthy way to see the world and relate to yourself. its not fair to expect a human being to go their whole life in states of checking the value of their body and their life against a societally imposed, often unattainable model that may not even reflect their own desires or goals.

it's tough, i know how tough it is to go against everything you've been taught, and the right to seek medical intervention to reshape ourselves in a way that deepens and solidifies our connection to our bodies is and will always be important. but for your own mental health, whatever shape you take must reflect yourself first. not a cis persons. transition is about making a home out of the body you're living in, in whatever way works for you.

you deserve the mental freedom that comes with removing "passing" from your emotional radar entirely. trans bodies are good bodies.
