Okay so. I reblogged a post a couple weeks ago about how the diagnostic criteria for Autism for the next DSM is going to be more restrictive, making it more difficult to get an autism diagnosis. Which I was just as upset as the OP about at the time. But since then I've gained additional information and I thought I'd share with the class.

The symptoms and symptom clusters that currently make up an Autism diagnosis is likely actually several separate disorders that were being grouped as Autism because we didn't know enough about the separate disorders. Since the last edition of the DSM there's been a bunch of extra research and genetic testing and analysis of symptom clusters. So we know enough now to make the more specific disorder specifications now.

So the diagnostic criteria of Autism is shrinking. That doesn't mean everyone who previously had an Autism diagnosis but no longer qualifies are going to be floating without labels that help get necessary accommodations. It just means you're going to fall into new categories instead. Like when Aspbergers stopped being a diagnosis and it got tied to Autism Spectrum Disorder (but in the opposite direction).

This doesn't mean you're not allowed to be upset! There's a lot of community to be found with fellow autistic people, and there have been a lot of recent strides in the acceptance and understanding of Autism as a disorder (with the general public). That loss of community is going to feel huge, and it's going to be an uphill battle to spread awareness of the new labels for the current symptom clusters.

But it's not the end of the world and it's going to result in more accurate and precise diagnosies.

I swear to god one of these days were going to see a video of Amaury Guichon and he's going to be making some wings and they are going to look dope as hell, the detail of each feather will be breathtaking, he'll spray paint them to perfection, but as the video goes on, he's not building any sort of winged creature, just the wings. And then there's a human-sized harness (also made of chocolate, somehow, he can do it). And he's attaching the wings to the harness. And he's putting the harness on and he demonstrates how he can flap the wings. And then he'll be off. Out the window and up and up and up. And we'll be looking at the livestream (it's a livestream now) and we'll scream "No, Amaury, the sun! It's going to melt the wings!". But he knows this already. And he is free.

Seeing Logan in the TVA makes me laugh so hard for some reason? Like I know he’s lived to see technology evolve and stuff, but there’s something so funny about a guy from the 1800s standing in some kind of retro-futuristic timey wimey agency to me. Man is confused as hell.

a big lesson for me was learning that most things are not as fragile as I’d believed. missing a class, or turning in a bad assignment, won’t instantly destroy your professor’s opinion of you. accidentally saying something harsh won’t make your friend want to end the friendship. it takes work to repair these things - it takes effort and research and sometimes a sincere apology - but you can do that because they’re not irreparably broken. what you’ve worked to build, in academia and in relationships and in life, is stronger and more enduring that your mind may teach you to believe. don’t let imagined fragility lead you to giving up

There's some dude (derogatory) on FB who is PISSED people are pricing their farm fresh eggs at $2 and $3 a dozen instead of $4+, saying it's "disrespectful" and "undignified" and "I'm trying to feed my kids" like Sir, you are on a Facebook group page bitching about your neighbors egg prices because your pet chickens aren't earning you a living wage and you think it's your neighbors' fault, you do not have a leg to stand on here wrt dignity.

Also half the answers are like "I give them to friends and family free" or "I donate them to food banks" or "I'm making them affordable to folks who might not otherwise be able to get them now that they're so expensive in the store" and "if you think you're going to turn a profit keeping backyard chickens you have been wildly misled" and so on, and so forth, and I'm so living for it.

and I can tell you right now, he did NOT like my answer of "if you're trying to feed your kids, I hear eggs are edible."
