Snippet 12: hands
Lancer: dear god, Mr. Fenton, what happened to your hands!?
Danny, had a run in with Damian’s katana and both of his hands have stitches: um… cooking… accident. I can’t use them that much currently
Lancer, pale: right, yes, of course. You may have one of your friends right you notes until they are properly healed
————
Snippet 13: more hands (and dash is a dick)
Dash: I bet Fenturd’s just faking his hand injury to get out of doing class work. Getting out of classwork is my thing! I’ll show him.
Danny, minding his own business:
Dash, yanks on his fingers harshly: Freak! Did you think you could copy me and het away with it?
Danny, his stitches torn from the way Dash grabbed him: you’re the last person I’d want to copy Dash, let go.
Dash: we all know you’re faking the hand injury, there’s no way you’d— you’d—
(Danny’s hands are bleeding, and starting to smear on Dash’s hands.)
Danny, (fake) calmly: you were saying, Dash?
Dash: I - uh—
Danny: thanks for opening them up, jerk.
—————
Snippet 14: Danny is Bruce’s Clone and Bruce Wayne has been hottest man alive for many consecutive years
The A-Lister Girls are at a sleepover
Star: Never have I ever had a crush on Danny Fenton
All girls (including Star): puts a finger down
A-List Girl: Paulina put your finger down
Paulina, begrudgingly putting a finger down: he shouldn’t count - he’s a loser!
A-List Girl: he’s still the cutest boy in our grade. Put your damn finger down.
—————
Snippet 15: unstoppable force vs immovable object
(In the Clone Danny Au, since Danny is not a ghost Valerie doesn’t see Phantom as the guy who ruined her life, but a very exhausted vigilante trying his best. They’re allies with conflicting ideologies on how to handle ghosts.)
Red Huntress: are you kidding me, Phantom? You dragged a kid in with you to fight ghosts? I thought you were better than that
Wraith, offended: *opening his mouth*
Phantom, tiredly putting a hand over Damian’s mouth: *in ASL + one hand* you don’t think I tried to stop him?
Red Huntress: he’s a child, Phantom, how hard could it be?
Phantom: looks down at Wraith
Wraith: looks up at Phantom with the eyes of a hundred enraged bulls
Phantom, kneeling down to Wraith and pulling his mask up to show his mouth: *whispering inaudibly*
Wraith: *takes off in the opposite direction*
Phantom, standing up to Red: *ASL* well? go get him
————
Snippet 16: identity
(Danny and Damian are sitting on a rooftop, in the middle of a break from patrol. Damian sits between Danny’s legs and Danny is slumped over Damian’s back.)
Damian, playing with Danny’s fingers:
Danny: who are you?
Damian: Damian.
Danny: who are you not?
Damian: Damian Wayne.
Danny: do you have to be?
Damian: no.
Danny: who do you have to be?
Damian: I just have to be me.
Danny: who are you?
Damian: I’m Damian.
Danny: good.
Damian:
Danny:
Damian: who are you?
Danny, smiling: Danny
—————
Snippet 17: long hair
(In the Clone Danny Au, Danny’s hair goes to his shoulders. I was in a GNC mood at the time the au was made and it passed on to Danny.)
Tucker: are you going to cut your hair, Danny? It’s getting long.
Danny, laying against the bed frame with Sam doing his hair: probably to get the dead ends cut off. I like it long.
Sam: I like it long too.
Tucker: you like it long because he lets you do whatever you want to it
Sam: it’s also a stand against the oppressive stereotype that men can’t have long hair and must always have it short in order to appear masculine! Danny’s showing individuality and sticking it to the patriarchy at the same time!
Danny: and because I let you do whatever you want to it.
Sam, making a punk hairdo for danny: yea that too
——————
Snippet 18: Danny is Bruce Wayne’s clone and Bruce——
Danny, getting stuff from his locker: my parents have a new ‘Fenton anti-ghost sticky bomb’ they’re working on and—
Student with a photography camera: Hey, Fenton!
Danny, looking over: what?
Student: *snaps a photo* thanks!
Student walks away
Danny:
Tucker:
Sam:
Danny: so… um…. Is that- is that another Wes? Should I be worried?
Sam: you should be angry! He just took your picture without your consent! That’s a violation of your bodily autonomy.
Danny: we can keep an eye on it, Sam, and if it becomes an issue then I’ll report it to a teacher.
Danny: and as I was saying, I can’t wait to have to make sure that that doesn’t hurt anyone.
Danny: i love having to stay up late sabotaging my parents’ inventions. Yay…
—————
Snippet 19: Danny is Bruce’s clone and—
Wes: ranting about how Phantom = Danny and how there’s proof and he has it and—
Random Student from his photography club: you wanna kiss him so bad it makes you look stupid.
Wes: I do nOT
Student: Its okay Wes, so does literally everyone else.
—————
Snippet 20: Lookalike
Danny: the only good thing about being Bruce Wayne’s clone is that my Brucie Wayne Impression is spot on
Damian: what??
Danny: my Brucie Wayne impression. It shouldn’t be as fun as it is doing it

hiii, not sure if you take requests or not, but i think that you just GET simon and his different personas. it's amazing. you understood the assignment! could i please request simon's reaction to reader being sexually harassed by someone? how would he react? how would he try to protect the reader?
I'm open to requests if I have the time, if they sound interesting or I get an idea in my head after reading them! I've never done this before but I love interacting with people, so ask away! <3 (not going to describe it in detail and will instead focus on his reaction, also I don't wanna dictate exactly how the reader feels since it's a very personal thing, so I'll give you some options!)
First off, whenever you and Simon decide to venture out together, you become the center of attention—that's for certain. Maybe it's his sheer size, the way he towers over you no matter your height. Maybe it's how he goes out of his way to stay concealed, always in black, cap pulled low and mask covering most of his face. Your own personal bodyguard. Or maybe it's the way he carries himself, the contrast between his imposing presence and the way he softens around you clearly too stark not to notice. But not everyone sees that side of him. To them, he's unapproachable. A walking danger sign. Not that he minds, he's used to it. Easier that way. One time he picked up your coffee order and managed to scare off the barista by telling her she got it wrong. Of course, he didn't mean to, but that poor woman must've thought a hitman had been sent after her and it was her last day on Earth. Simon doesn't even have to raise his voice, there's an unshakable authority in every word he speaks and in the way he carries himself. A man carved from stone. Both an immovable object and an unstoppable force. Second, not many people would ever dare confront him. His presence alone is enough to keep fools at bay. He knows you don't like making a scene—so he won't start one. They get the warning by witnessing him simply stand there, and they leave, too scared of being burned alive by his fiery gaze. After that, he'd want to make sure you're okay. Won't press if you brush it off, just squeezes your hand once. A simple question. You sure? If you squeeze back, Yeah, I'm sure. Still, he makes a note to check in properly later, when it's just the two of you, in the comfort of your home, where you can be as honest and vulnerable as you need to be. With him, you're safe. No one dares to look at you the wrong way. Hell, most don't even make eye contact, too afraid of whatever might be lurking under that mask. Nobody—while he's by your side. And Simon rarely leaves your side, only if necessary. A quick errand, a bathroom break. At the grocery store when you send him to help a kid grab cereal off the top shelf and you looking for the milk, or when you're out with your friends and have him fetch the drinks. It's fine, he'll bring them to you then go back to the boys, standing just far enough to give you space but close enough to keep an eye on things. But that's when it happens. He returns, drinks in hand. Sees you standing there, between your friends and some bastard who doesn't know when to quit. You learned from him, taking the role of the protector, holding your ground. But that makes you the easiest target. The guy leans in too close, lets his hand wander. A nasty comment, a brush against your shoulder, a grab at your waist, a touch— No. Simon doesn't sit this one out. Drops the drinks, makes a mess. Doesn't even think twice about it.
He's on the bastard in seconds, grabbing him by the collar and shoving him hard against the wall. Absolutely livid. Got him handled in a matter of seconds. “Walk away while you still can.” Doesn't matter if the guy puts up a fight or not, sorry fella will end up with just enough bruises to get taught a valuable lesson.
The second he's gone, Simon's focus is solely you. It's like the whole room ceases to exist. Pulls you to the side when you're visibly shaking. You can't downplay it this time, he sees right through you. He's not a man of many words, but his actions say enough (though that can only mean his words carry a heavy amount of weight when spoken). His eyes scan your face, your posture, every small tell you try to hide. It's instinct—years of training telling him to assess, analyze, act. But this isn't a battlefield, and you aren't a mission. His rough exterior, the ghost of a man he is, they all fade when he reaches for you. His touch betrays him. Warm and caring, meant to pull you back to him. "You alright, bird?" His voice is low, soothing hands trailing down your back. He doesn't rush you, doesn't let the moment pass too quickly. He lets you feel—lets you grab at him, tug on his shirt, squeeze his hand as tight as you need to. And when you do, he's already there, arms wrapped around you like armor.
A simple “Breathe, love. Nice and slow. I got you.” when you're shaking, legs giving out on you. He's a shield between you and the world, you swear you could lose yourself in those arms. “You're with me. Don't have to pretend.” when you let out a nervous laugh. He is not waiting until you get home to talk about this. Needs to know you're fine. “Hey, look at me,” he says softly when you try to avoid his gaze, “you're safe. Just focus on me, yeah?” He takes a slow, controlled breath and you follow his lead, drawing in a deep breath of your own, letting the tension start to ease. His eyes never leave your side (and that's the day his teammates see a side of their lieutenant they haven't met before).
Later—when you have a moment alone, the frustration creeps in. It shows in the way your steps land heavier. You set things down with a little too much force, your restless pacing filling the room. And Simon senses it. Drops everything he's doing and comes to you. Invites you into his embrace, slowly kneeling down and pressing his forehead against yours. “I know. You got every right to be pissed. Just don't carry it alone.” The weight of it all crashes down, every bottled-up emotion spilling as you cling to him. “That's right, doll. Just let it out.”
He's there. Always will be there. And you'll never have to face any of it on your own.

𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐒 (𝟏𝟑𝟔𝟏𝟗𝟗) 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍

𝐈. 𝐃𝐄𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐒
asteroid eris is named after the greek goddess of discord and strife. eris is known to be a troublemaker and is often credited with starting and sustaining the trojan war. although eris is often associated with creating problems for people, liana miate asserts that hesiod (an ancient greek poet) splits eris into two: a younger version who aligns with sowing discord for no reason and an older version who intends to bring about competition and push people to go beyond their set limits.
in astrology, eris follows her mythological roots and represents areas of life where we can encounter disruptions, major losses, and chaos. eris can also tell of where we face injustices and where we need to learn to stand up for ourselves.
asteroid eris mainly makes itself known as it moves and creates transiting aspects, but for this post i will be focusing on how it functions in one’s birth chart. (if you do want me to analyze how it may work as it makes aspects to planets and other object - let me know).
𝐈𝐈. 𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐒𝐈𝐆𝐍𝐒
asteroid eris has an orbital period of about 560 years, so it moves through the signs really slowly. this asteroid has been in the sign of aries since the mid-1920s and won’t be in taurus until 2048 where it will stay until around 2146. with this in mind, i will only explain the way the signs aries and taurus will influence the way asteroid eris can function.
𝗔𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗦
eris in aries could be tumultuous. there could be more of an emphasis on literal war and combat which makes sense in my opinion given the world wars were in and around the time period of this asteroid being in aries. i also see eris in aries being more likely to fight back against the chaos the asteroid can bring; if older eris wants people to learn to stand up for themselves, then aries is the perfect sign for that to occur. again, we can look back in history to see revolutions like the civil rights movement, the vietnam war protests, the breaking up of the british empire and more occur while this asteroid was in aries. of course, these things happen all throughout history, but i want to specify how often this seems to happen while in the specific period of eris in aries. asteroid eris in aries seems to function as dealing with catastrophes head-on with the idea of pushing through the tough times instead of succumbing to them. while discord may hit hard; the collective will rise back with more strength than what was had before.
𝗧𝗔𝗨𝗥𝗨𝗦
eris in taurus could bring about a sort of predictable chaos. build ups to conflict may be obvious, but when it occurs it could destroy people’s comfortability and especially bring havoc to finances. conflicts could last for long periods of time, and people overall could fall into a “woe is me” attitude when it comes to figuring out how to move past catastrophes; instead of figuring out how to advocate for one’s self or the collective when facing injustices - those born under eris in taurus could try to wait things out. the idea of fighting back or advocating for oneself could take a while to be viable, but once it becomes an option i could see people putting up a hard fight. asteroid eris in taurus could be reluctant to face conflict head on, but once decided to it will be obstinate on its course. i’m reminded of the phrase “when an unstoppable force hits an immovable object”.
𝐈𝐈𝐈. 𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐒𝐄𝐒
𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗦𝗧
you could go through drastic physical changes. if you were to get into plastic surgery, fillers, botox, etc. it may not bode well for you; your body could react negatively to the treatments and/or you may not look as well as you wanted to. you could also struggle with your identity or feeling like you don't truly know yourself or what you want to do in life. you could go through "phases" or looking and/or dressing a certain way. you could feel as if no one understands you, or as if the way you view yourself is vastly different from how others see and understand you. people may not be able to come to a consensus about who they think you are as a person. it could take you a while to find out "who you are", and your body may change often throughout your life. those with eris in the first house probably need to come to terms with the way they look instead of trying to constantly change their appearance, and they also likely need to learn how to settle down with one way of living or learn to embrace that vastness of who they want to be instead of trying to put themselves into a box.
𝗦𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗗
money and other financial successes could easily come and go out of your life. you may be the type of person who loses things more easily than the average person, and you may find it hard to retain money and possessions. during tense transits, you could have items repossessed or even stolen from you. your routines could be hard to maintain, or you could find random incidents keep you from being able to have one. it could be easy for you to break bad habits (but again, could be hard for you to maintain good ones). you could find yourself struggling to keep jobs or find that you're drawn to jobs where every day is different and unpredictable. you may need to learn how to stay on top of what it is you want and need to do (ie. writing down a schedule, having someone hold you accountable, etc.). you may need to learn how to say no to yourself when it comes to spending money and work on having a savings account you can't touch at all. it may be better for you to make large purchases with cash instead of setting up payments, so you can keep possessions long-term.
𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗥𝗗
you could find yourself being ghosted often and/or you could have trouble maintaining contact with others. you could be "horrible with communication" or even technology to an extent. you could find that people misunderstand you or they think you're more harsh in your words than you intend to be. you could also have a tumultuous relationship with your siblings - maybe you've always found it hard to connect with them, or you go long periods of time without talking. your early education may have been interrupted in some way (having to move away, change schools, etc.). you could also have issues with transportation more often than others like your car breaking down randomly or always being late to events due to unreliability. learning how to advocate for yourself will be a major key to dealing with this eris placement. there's a need to learn how to "speak up" and deal with confrontation without running away and also without arguing. you may find it better to try leaving early to account for possible transportation issues. there's a need to learn to set boundaries with your siblings also in order to maintain the connection.
𝗙𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗧𝗛
you could have an unstable home life. maybe you had (or you do) change living situations often, or your relationship with your family might not be the best. your childhood might’ve been fractured as a result of family issues. people, areas, or things you find comfort in may seem like they always get “ruined” at some point (ie. if you have a comfort show it gets canceled or the writing starts going downhill, a celebrity you like ends up being very problematic, etc.). you may feel as if you have no control over your emotions, or whenever you try to control your emotions you end up breaking down anyways. you may even find it hard to trust your instincts. you may also find it hard to create and maintain relationships with women - especially your mother. you may need to learn how to come to terms with the fact your childhood wasn’t as good as you wanted (or as good as it should’ve been); you might even have to realize you need to put yourself and your needs above your family due to their issues. you may need to learn to step back when it comes to parasocial relationships; figuring out it’s okay to find comfort in things or people, but not putting them on a pedestal anymore.
𝗙𝗜𝗙𝗧𝗛
eris in the fifth house is also a contender for having an unstable childhood. maybe you weren’t allowed to behave like a child, or your childhood abruptly ended due to unforeseen circumstances. when engaging in creative avenues, you may encounter blocks often - in terms of imagination, originality, or physical blocks. you might even find that the art you create gets messed up in some way (ie. you delete a song or a section of a song you were making, you mix the wrong paints together, etc.). you may spontaneously lose interest in hobbies, or you’re prevented from being able to do them (ie. it rains on a day you planned to golf, you run out of yarn when you were planning to knit, etc.). with this placement, it may also seem like your romantic life is never going anywhere; this is another house that may see people ghosting them, or when you go out on dates they could be horrendous. you may need to learn how to create things out of your messes when it comes to creative endeavors; there’s a need to learn how to “roll with the punches” so to speak. you may find it best to engage in multiple hobbies instead of just one or finding a way to have someone hold you accountable for the creative work you want to create. there’s a need to allow yourself to go back to being the child you never got to be at some points.
𝗦𝗜𝗫𝗧𝗛
you may be the type of person who always has health issues or some sort of injury. when you try to create good health habits you may find it hard to stay on track, and there may even be instances where you unintentionally break your habits (ie. you’re counting calories and want to stay under a certain amount but by day three you’ve forgotten you were dieting this way, you’re forced to work overtime one night and it just happens to be one of the days you’ve set aside for weight training, etc.). you may lose items easily, and when you try to help others you may have a way of making things worse (ie. you tried to help someone cook, but you burned part of the meal). you may need to advocate for and pay attention to your health and your body more than the average person. similar to other placements, having other people hold you accountable may be helpful for you to maintain habits you want to implement. you may find it best to keep items in the same place each time you don’t have them in your hand, so you don’t lose things as often. when helping others, try to have someone check your work to be sure you’re providing aid the right way.
𝗦𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗛
you could find yourself entering toxic relationships often or at least relationships that often never go anywhere. you might find yourself being ghosted by people for seemingly no reason or drama arising out of relationships you have from out of nowhere. contracts you write up or engage in could fall apart easily (ie. you receive a job offer, but it’s randomly rescinded for no reason; you have everything in order to move to a new apartment, but you get rejected out of nowhere), or they could cause more headaches than they’re worth. you might find people often don’t give enough in their relationships with you - like you’re the one running the show, making all the plans to be together, spending all the money, and they’re only along for the ride, or they only focus on what they can gain from you. you may need to learn how to have respect for yourself when it comes to relationships of all kinds. learning to not set yourself on fire in order to keep someone else from being cold, demanding equality in partnerships, etc. with this placement in aries i could even see a need to step back from relationships in some way - to allow or force others to pull their weight instead of making everything happen on your own. there’s a need to learn how to advocate for yourself and your needs in partnerships and contracts.
𝗘𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧𝗛
you could feel as if you’re always going through some sort of transformation - almost as if your life itself or life circumstances are always unstable. when you try to share with others you could find your kindness is not appreciated, so you may feel reluctant to give people money or take money from others for seemingly no reason. whenever you try to create deep connections with people it could feel like things never work out or always fall through (ie. you want to have a business partner, but the person backs out at the last minute, you need someone to cosign on a loan for you, but no one is willing). also, with this placement you may feel as if people leave randomly; this could range from being ghosted, them not putting in effort to maintain a relationship with you, conversations going stale to literal death taking people away from you without warning. additionally, your long term assets may be unstable. there could be a need to learn how to let go of things and people once they’ve served their purpose in your life; some people are meant to be present for only moments or periods of time in your life as opposed to throughout the whole journey. there’s also a need to stay on top of contracts and long-term investments; you could find that lower risk investments work best for you. there’s also a need to learn how to share yourself with others and allow others to do the same with you even through times where you may have been betrayed - learning from your mistakes is important in this area.
𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗛
this is another placement that could encounter issues with transportation since the ninth house deals with travel. going further though, you could often experience disruptions when going on trips or vacations (ie. forgetting your passport, wallet, or other important item; flights being canceled or delayed for no reason, having “bad” experiences when you visit other areas). this could also be an indicator of struggling in areas of higher academia; this could be in regards to the material feeling overwhelming to learn or things always going wrong during the school year (ie. experiencing life changing events that make it hard for you to attend class, having to drop classes or finding it hard to create a schedule that works, etc.). connections to religion could also be unstable; you could feel uncomfortable with the idea of religion because of issues with religious institutions. you may find that people often try to suppress your culture or way of living, or you could find it hard to connect with your culture because people push you away from it in some way. there’s a need to be proactive when it comes to the way you travel – opting to leave too early instead of even on time, checking your luggage twice and three times over, etc. you may need to advocate for yourself more when interacting with higher institutions like college or religious places, and there’s also a need to be proud of your culture and views despite people’s attempts to erase them.
𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗛
when it comes to receiving recognition for your achievements you could find that you’re often looked over. your career path may be hard for you to narrow down, or you could find you’re let go from jobs without warning when everything seems to be fine from your point of view. you may jump from job to job or be promoted and demoted to certain positions for no reason. you could encounter extreme highs and lows when it comes to your reputation; it might even be possible that your reputation is not consistent amongst people, and it could be hard for you to control it. when you’re in positions of power you may find that people often undermine you or refuse to take you seriously - especially men. on that note, you may find it hard to create and maintain relationships with men (especially your father). you could find people always find a way to criticize you or tell you all the work you do is wrong no matter what you do. there’s a need to possibly embrace whatever reputation people assign to you instead of trying to control the narrative or change who you are to appease everyone. there is also a need to demand recognition and praise when you know you deserve it - possibly even walking away from job opportunities when you know you’re being lowballed. there’s a need to maintain your sense of self trusting that the truth of who you are will guide you towards those who will appreciate you.
𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗛
it could be hard for you to maintain friendships and connections with the collective and other groups in general. you could find yourself being iced out or being the “odd one out” when you try to fit in. technology may fail on your frequently, or you may feel like it doesn’t like you (ie. you find it hard to connect to wifi, you always have phone or computer issues, etc.). you may feel as if (or told) that you’re not as helpful as you think you are when it comes to collective situations (ie. group projects). you could find your ideas and dreams for the future often don’t work out, or you find them hard to maintain. there’s partially a need to embrace your individuality - to come to terms with the fact that you will eventually find a group that aligns with you and won’t push you out or make you feel othered. there’s a need to keep putting yourself out there even when you feel like it never works out. there’s also a need to maintain hope – for the future, for connecting with others, and when it comes to interacting with technology.
𝗧𝗪𝗘𝗟𝗙𝗧𝗛
this is another placement that would indicate feeling as if you’re always going through some sort of transformation or ending in life. you could feel as if your spiritual life is in constant chaos (ie. having times where you’re clear on what your journey is and then suddenly feeling like you have no clue what you’re doing; being able to communicate with your guides clearly and then suddenly hearing radio silence, etc.). you could feel as if you don’t “truly” or “intimately” know yourself. you could find that your subconscious activates at random times and could cause trouble when you least expect it. you could feel as if your fate changes quickly going from having great luck to none at all. when it’s time to end certain cycles in your life you may find it hard to let go, or you may feel as if things end abruptly leaving little space for you to accept these endings. there’s a need to learn to be okay with abrupt endings or the idea of never receiving closure – finding a way to maintain peace even if this doesn’t happen. there’s also a need to take fate into your own hands instead of always being passive (or learning to be passive when it’s necessary). there’s a need to be open to ambiguity as opposed to running away from it.

Twilight Eyes Project: "Secure a Wife" (part 2)
First part here
Naturally, "Twilight eyes" stay on during his side mission with Franky. Then he bursts into Camilla's party, wounded and disoriented enough to mess up his introduction.
And thus... slightly different expressions from manga to anime.

In the manga, it's full-on Twilight eyes. Brow going downward to the center, focused and narrowed eyes. The anime has the first two, though as of focused eyes... they make use of animation to show he's so shaken he can't focus his eyes on one place. His slip-up does look funnier when he's trying to present himself as Very Put Together™ as he does in the manga, but I think it's funny either way. Also, I appreciate the small extra whump bone from the anime.
Continuing on the humorous aspect, he switches all the way to reassuring Loid eyes as he tells everyone how absolutely, definitely normal his situation is. No biggie. Just a head flesh wound. He sleeps those right off.

"Loid eyes" stay on as he continues his ploy. Nothing to see here, please continue, are you having fun, my dear wife whom I definitely did not meet just a couple days ago?

Those eyes keep up until Camilla tries to embarrass Yor in front of everyone with details about her "past job"... and here goes.
Loid eyes. He will show everyone how proud he is of his wife.
But then, slowly, his eyes don't look so strained anymore...
... until they're outright sad eyes.
The direct proof (along with the short flashback) that what Twilight says there is the truth for him: he doesn't judge Yor, instead, he honestly supports and praises her for her dedication and her strength.
And when he finishes his praise, he looks towards the others... and the audience doesn't get to see his eyes.
Yor does.
And the truth she sees in his eyes is enough to not only bring tears to her eyes, but to also stay with her and give her strength multiple chapters/episodes later.
This smile isn't the one he actually gave her. But it's the one she remembers.
(Wrong angle in the anime, but we can forgive that)
They leave Camilla's party, get attacked by the smuggling ring, Twilight knocks a few of them out and tells Yor to run for it, Twilight eyes on as he keeps himself alert for any possible attack.
Yor voices her worries about the well-being of his "patients"... and what else can he do but put on the Loid eyes. Which I'm actually sure weren't necessary with her, lol.
Unstoppable force (Yor believing everything she sees and hears) meets immovable object (Twilight suspecting everything and everyone).
Subtle Twilight eyes as he starts to question... well, his own judgment, at this point 😆
They get attacked, and Yor kicks a guy into another dimension before he can hurt Loid. And!
I would just really like to know what his thought process here was. This look is on the verge between "Loid eyes" and "real eyes". But this next panel/shot feels like it's closer to "real eyes".
He was actually amused by how far she kicked that guy, huh 😆
They kick a few more guys' asses, then Yor drops the "why don't we get married" question. Twilight is, understandably, shocked and confused. It's actually something he'd planned for, but it came unexpectedly and just so freely and willingly from Yor.
When his mind picks up from the shock, he puts on the thought process.
And we get investigative eyes.
Twilight accepts, gives her the best marriage proposal to ever grace a screen, starts with Loid voice for "Even in sickness, or in sadness," and switches to Twilight voice for "No matter what hardships await us, let us be there for each other."
Twilight eyes as he finishes his vows,
And... this, as he thinks "Until my mission do us part"
I want to make it clear that I completely doubt he'd already grown any feelings for Yor already. Probably the only thing he'd feel for her at that point was that he sympathized with her mental fortitude and willingness to sacrifice herself in order to protect and support someone she cared about. The pleasant face he has at the end could be merely his expression of relief that the mission was going smoothly.
But then, isn't that what becomes the foundation of the feelings he'll grow later? The relief that she is the kind of person who will protect the peace he fights so hard to maintain himself? A relief that will grow strong enough to lead him into revealing true parts of himself to her?
There's definitely a lot to take away just from the way Twilight's eyes are drawn, in any case.
(anime only fan here, don't spoil me for the manga)

Part 2: It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay
Tensions were running high at Sunny Day Excursions.
Over the next few days, Mary continued to press the issue of you staying in Montana with little passive aggressive comments that got on your damn nerves. You proverbially dug your heels in, and became even more stubborn and taciturn as a result.
Unstoppable force meets immovable object.
However, the entire camp was shaken the night Paige and Luke disappeared on a hike. Buck and Sunny assured everyone that they were doing their best to look for the couple, but come the morning, it was Emily who accidentally found Luke in the woods, bleeding from a head wound, and without Paige.
He claimed that they’d gone their separate ways after a fight, and he hadn’t seen her since. Paige’s suitcase and things were gone from her tent, so Sunny could only assume that she’d found her way back to camp and left for home by morning.
“Look, no one’s a prisoner here,” Sunny had said. “If Paige wanted to go home, then that’s up to her.”
There was still something off about it though, you felt. Emily seemed to share your thoughts; you’d heard her whispering with Avery, and Dan, another camper in his early 40s.
You started to watch Luke a bit harder from then on. As did your friend Mary, if for different reasons.
It was still early in the morning when you caught her flirting with Luke in front of your shared tent.
“A personal trainer, huh?” said Luke. His gaze flit over Mary’s form, and she allowed it with a smile. “You know, I’ve got a pretty good workout routine, but I’ll bet you can give me some tips—”
“Drink lots of water,” you said dryly as you approached the tent. You carried your sketchpad and acrylic paints in your hand, and you pushed into the tent without giving Luke and Mary more than a glance.
You heard Mary’s voice outside the tent, all girlish and flirtatious as she apologized about you, and suggested they could keep talking later. Luke readily agreed. You sat down on the edge of your bed and watched his silhouette walk away from the tent.
Mary soon joined you inside, and she didn’t look pleased. She stared down at you and crossed her arms.
“Are you kidding me with that shit?” you asked, gesturing at the scene you just saw.
“Could you be any more of a cockblock?” Mary shot back.
“Number one, that guy is a little too young for you, Cougar Town,” you reminded her. Luke had to be in his early 20s. It had been a hot minute since you and Mary were of college age. “Number two, he came here with his girlfriend, who he somehow lost in the woods.”
“She left him,” Mary said. “All alone in the middle of nowhere. Then she took off and went home so she didn’t have to deal with what she did. I feel bad for him.”
“No, you’re horny for him. There’s a difference,” you said flatly.
You loved Mary like a sister, but she had the tendency to let guys blind her to good sense. (Ha. Pot calling the kettle black, came your self-deprecation.)
Though you could’ve predicted the way she huffed and walked away, once again leaving you alone. You sighed.
Wasn’t this vacation for us? you wondered.
Mary continued to bait Luke with coy flirtation, while you tried and failed to ride a horse again. Cormack had been kind and encouraging in trying to help you onto the creature, but once you were on its back, you were too afraid to let the horse move.
You felt like you were going to topple off at any moment, even with Beau Arlen’s advice. (Which still made you blush whenever you thought about it.)
So Cormack helped you down, and you went back to the mess tent for a mid-afternoon snack to make you feel better: a giant jelly donut.
You were really getting frustrated with yourself now.
“It’s not so hard,” Emily had said. You could imagine that her dad, the cowboy sheriff, had put her on a horse from the time she was a little kid. You were a city girl, through and through. The closest you’d ever gotten to riding a horse was a plastic one—a carousel at a carnival when you were six.
While you finished off your donut, you realized that you’d spent the whole day alone. As frustrated as you were with Mary, she was your best friend. And after this week, you would be staying and she would be going back to Chicago. You didn’t know when you would get to see her again.
So with a sigh, you wiped your hands free of donut icing and went to try and find her.
You started with the tent you shared with her. “Hey, Mary? Look I—”
You gasped when, upon entering the tent, you got your eyes seared. Mary and Luke were tangled together under the sheets. He moved off of your friend and rolled onto his back next to her when you came in. Mary uttered your name in shock. Everyone was shocked, really.
You were that, and angry.
“Really?! In our goddamn bed?” you shouted. Your gaze focused on Luke, and you pointed at him. “Get the hell out of here.”
He hesitated slightly, glancing at Mary, but your furious look scared him more. He grabbed his boxers and got dressed under the sheets before he left the bed, and then fled the tent, giving you a wide berth on his way out.
You then focused on Mary, who somehow looked both contrite and irritated at being interrupted. She said your name in a placating way, but you shook your head.
“No. No. Don’t even try,” you said. “That guy’s girlfriend left him in the middle of a vacation! What does that tell you? Please, screw me?”
“You know what?” Mary snapped. She sat up in the bed, making sure to cover herself with the sheet. She leaned over to grab her clothes from the floor and started hastily getting dressed.
“Luke’s actually a nice guy," she said. "You used to know how to have fun. But now you’ve just become this bitter person who can’t relax or let yourself be happy, let alone anyone else.”
That actually struck you—like a physical blow to your chest. You tried to blink past the sting of tears in your eyes.
“You’re a damn child,” you said, steadier than you felt. “You’re not the one who had your whole world imploded.”
Mary’s lips pursed. She still looked angry, but also like she was hiding the sting of guilt. She gathered up some of her things and informed you that she’d be staying at Luke’s tent tonight.
Freakin’ fine by you.
You’d also have to request some new bed sheets from Sunny.
In the morning, you stumbled out of bed after a rough night’s sleep. It was hard for you to sleep in a new place by yourself, especially out here in the woods.
Especially after how you and Mary left things.
You were so tired, you counted it a small blessing that you were able to put on clothes and get your hair into some kind of normalcy before you trekked over to the mess tent.
There you accidentally overheard Avery and Emily arguing; she’d lost her knife in the woods when she’d happened upon Luke, but Avery was reluctant to let her go hiking by herself. Apparently, her mother was due to join them this morning as well.
It seemed like the day of late comers though. A new married couple, Tonya and Donno, had arrived late yesterday to join the trip. They’d requested a tent at the far end of the camp, closest to the woods. Apparently, they wanted to really experience nature.
All you knew was, they seemed a bit weird.
“That knife’s important. My father gave it to me,” Emily said, interrupting your thoughts.
It made Avery quiet, but they both greeted you more pleasantly when you had to walk by them to get to the coffee.
“Hey, sorry,” you gave a little wave in embarrassment. You hated interrupting moments that had nothing to do with you, but you supposed it was unavoidable in this camp.
Once you’d gotten your coffee and filled your plate with some eggs and bacon, you joined them at the table. You pretended not to notice the way they both glanced at you with measures of concern. Did you really look that bad?
Avery wisely didn’t comment. Emily wasn’t as good at curbing her inner filter.
“Hey, you okay?” she asked. You gave her a thin smile.
“Just a bit tired. Didn’t sleep so well,” you admitted.
Of course, that was when the reason for your bedraggled appearance strolled into the mess tent. Mary came in and noticed Avery and Emily first with a smile. It turned frosty when she glanced at you. You gave her a mocking “smile” right back.
She chose to ignore you and went for the buffet table instead.
Right, you thought. You supposed that was how it was going to be for the rest of this damn trip.
“All righty! Good mornin’, folks,” Sunny said, entering the mess tent. She surveyed all the faces gathered—some relaxed and jovial, and then your table, a bit awkward, a bit tense.
She moved on with a smile that matched her name and her shiny red hair.
“Just lettin’ you all know as a reminder, we’ve got a bunch of activities for you all if there are any takers. Archery, kayaking, it’s gonna be a great time,” she said. “But if you prefer, you’re welcome to keep to the camp have a more relaxed day. It’s your vacation, so it’s up to you how you wanna spend it.”
You all nodded in understanding.
It’s your vacation. You choose how you spend it.
That, you could get on board with.
You spent the rest of the morning alone, as usual. Either you were reading in the outdoor lounge area, taking in the sunshine and the fresh air, or you were painting, taking in the landscape of the tall trees and the great, big mountains peeking out from behind them.
You earned yourself some peace today, one that let you breathe and try to tune out your frustrations with Mary, and your worries about the future. You hummed along to a melody in your mind as you painted. Completely at peace…
Until a hand tapped on your shoulder, making you yelp and sending your paintbrush high in the air.
Cormack came into your line of vision with a barely stifled laugh and placating hands. While you took out your earbuds (and calmed your breathing), he grabbed your brush and handed it back to you.
“Sorry about that. Just wanted to let you know that lunch is served,” he said, though he took a glance at your painting. “Hey, lookin’ real good there. Nice landscape.”
You let out an embarrassed chuckle. “Aw, you don’t have to be so nice. I’m still learning.”
He crossed his arms. “Well, if you’re interested in taking classes, I know someone who runs an art studio in town. Miss Peggy. Nice lady. Not too harsh.”
You laughed more genuinely.
“Good to know, thanks! Send me the address and I’ll check it out,” you said. Cormack agreed with a smile, and he helped you up from the long couch you were sitting on. The two of you walked back together to the central part of the camp, where the mess tent was.
There you met Emily’s mother, Carla, who’d just joined her family at the camp. She wasn’t exactly dressed for camping in her pressed blouse and pencil skirt; professional and smart, her long dark hair a perfect coil.
This woman was immaculate. As you soon learned, she was also a lawyer. You didn’t often feel intimidated by other women, but she could fit that bill, considering you were sweaty and dusty in your plain V-necked shirt and jeans.
And especially knowing that this was Sheriff Arlen’s ex-wife. Avery seemed like the “wealthy businessman” type—the kind of man you’d expect a high-powered lawyer to be with. You found yourself wondering how she’d met the sheriff.
That’s none of your busineeeess, you sing-songed in your mind, while you speared more salad on your plate. As if that could disguise the juicy brisket burger right beside it.
After lunch, you returned to your tent to finally find Mary. She was lying on the bed, looking a bit listless.
“I’m surprised you’re not attached to Luke’s hip,” you remarked, setting down your backpack and paint supplies on the floor. “Or his face.”
She shot you a peeved look. “He keeps ditching me for that weird new couple. Tonya and Donner or something.”
“Donno?” you supplied. “Yeah, he’s weird. He stole the ketchup bottle from the breakfast table this morning. He told me, ‘You shouldn’t ruin good eggs with sugary tomato paste.’”
Mary raised a brow, but she turned to you when you sat down beside her on the bed. There was a moment of tension between you, even though your gazes were softer to each other. The truth was, you missed your friend today. You guys didn’t fight often, and it had you hurting. Maybe she felt the same way.
“Listen,” you said with a sigh. “I’m not sorry for throwing Luke out of our tent. That was gross as hell, and I didn’t appreciate that. But I don’t want to fight with you. I want to enjoy our last few days together before you go back to Chicago.”
Mary’s lips pursed, but she seemed to relent.
“Yeah, that was a bitch move,” she admitted. She knew full well that her tryst with Luke could’ve happened in his tent, not the one she shared with you. She met your gaze with more resignation, as well as apology.
“You’re really staying here, aren’t you?” she asked.
You nodded. “Yeah, I am. I’m not saying there’s nothing for me back home. Of course I’m going to miss you, our friends, the rest of my family…but I need to do this. I need a fresh start.”
It took her a moment, but Mary nodded. She reached over and hugged you. You held her back tightly.
After a beat, she let you go and slid out of bed.
“Okay,” she sighed. “I need to do something. I’m going stir crazy in here.”
“Where’re you going?” you asked.
“Just for a run,” she replied. “I should be back by dinner.”
“A run?” you repeated, your brows furrowing. “In the woods by yourself? Don’t you think that’s dangerous?”
“Well, you could come with me,” she offered. You grimaced. You and running didn’t mix. You were more of a yoga girl.
Mary laughed and finished changing into her activewear and sneakers.
“That’s what I thought,” she said. “No worries, I’ll have my phone if anything. I’ll be okay.”
“But your cell won’t have service out there!” you said.
Mary was already leaving. She blew you a kiss goodbye, though she did stop in the tent’s entryway. Her face sobered with a sincere apology.
“Look, I’m sorry for everything, okay?” she said. “I know I can be a brat sometimes…but we can talk more when I get back, clear my head.”
You were reluctant to see her go, but you nodded.
“Just be back in time for dinner!” you called after her.
Mary wasn’t back for dinner. Even after the sun set, she hadn’t come back from her run. You were really beginning to worry.
All the other campers were gathering up at the edge of camp for a Night Hike. It was an idea Buck and Sunny surprised you all with a few hours ago. You wondered if they were trying to make up for the strange way Paige left the camp.
“The moon’s full tonight,” as Sunny had said, with a slightly too bright smile. “Should be a beautiful time.”
You asked some of the others if they’d seen Mary, but they all replied negatively. Even Luke was nowhere to be found…but someone else was missing too.
“I still can’t believe you let her go into the woods alone,” Carla snapped at her husband.
Avery’s frown deepened. “I had no idea she went off by herself. You know your daughter. She’s headstrong—”
“Yeah, just like her father,” Carla muttered, turning away from him. Avery sighed.
You couldn’t help but approach them.
“Emily’s missing?" you said in concern. "Mary is too. I’ve been waiting for her to come back all afternoon.”
“I’m sorry to hear that,” Carla said. She frowned as anxiety continued to well up in her eyes. “Maybe they found each other.”
You touched her arm in comfort. “Either way, we can all look for them now.”
Sunny came up to the group with a flashlight and a smile.
“Everyone ready?” she asked.
“Mary’s missing,” you told her, “And so is Emily. Mary went on a run this morning and hasn’t been back since.”
Sunny inclined her head. After she surveyed the rest of the crowd, she settled back on you.
“I see Luke’s not among us either. Maybe they’re together?” she suggested, in a leading tone. You frowned.
“No, she left alone,” you said firmly.
“Don’t mean she stayed alone, darlin’,” Sunny replied, with that Oklahoma twang that so often made her words more charming. “But we’ll be sure to look for her and Emily while we’re out there.”
Carla shook her head and said to her husband, “That’s it. I’m calling Beau.”
“Darling, you don’t need to,” Avery replied, shaking his head. “Emily’s a responsible girl. She knows what time we’re meant to leave—”
Carla shook her head and walked past him and Sunny—towards the hotspot for cell service. You agreed with her; calling the sheriff couldn’t hurt, especially if you all couldn’t find Mary or Emily on this hike.
You still went with the rest of them to start your own search. You tried to keep with the group, but after lingering in certain spots to call for Mary, you eventually realized that you’d lost the trail—and everyone else.
The trees were tall and dark now. The moon was filtering through them like the sun had during other day hikes, but it was much more ominous at night.
“Shit,” you muttered. You gripped your flashlight in worry as panic started to well up in your chest.
Now you were lost.
You jumped with a start when the hoot of a bird passed by overhead.
Shiiiit. This was very bad.
You kept moving forward on what you thought was the trail. That was all you could do, keep moving forward. You made a few turns around some trees, occasionally calling out for Sunny, or Mary, or anyone to hear you.
The panic was back now, full force, and you felt the sting of tears in your eyes. And when you turned another corner, you screamed when you bumped into someone.
A girl’s scream echoed just as loudly as yours in the big, empty wood, but you got ahold of yourself, literally with a hand over your wildly beating heart when you realized who you’d run into.
“Emily!” you uttered. The girl let out a breath of relief to see you too. You went to her and pulled her into a hug, and she hugged you back.
“Thank. God,” she said. Her voice sounded tight with emotion, and you held her a bit tighter.
“It’s okay,” you rubbed her back. “How long’ve you been out here?”
“I don’t know,” she shook her head, pulling away from you. “Couple of hours? Maybe longer.”
You nodded and expelled a breath. Poor thing looked tired. She didn’t even have any supplies with her. You gave her a protein bar from your backpack before you two started walking.
“So the good news is, we found each other. The bad news is, we’re still lost,” you said, counting each item on your fingers. “But the good news also is, I’ve only been walking for about…half an hour or so. I’m thinking we can mark trees or other landmarks as we pass them, like checking them off, so we know where we’ve been.”
Emily glanced at you with a smile. “You’re a checklist person, aren’t you?”
“Absolutely!” you agreed. “Checking things off is satisfying. But it’s also good just to take an inventory of where we’re at.”
You two kept walking for a while. Emily explained that she’d been following Luke, who took off by himself after giving her an ominous warning.
“There are some bad people on this trip. Want my advice? Get the hell out of here,” he’d said.
You frowned in concern. You’d felt that there was something fishy about that guy, pretty much from the moment he and Paige disappeared on that hike. Those newcomers he’d been hanging out with ever since, Tonya and Donno…maybe they had something to do with it.
They’d left camp today to go into town, claiming to check on the restaurant they owned and ran. But with everything now starting to come into perspective, you couldn’t take any piece of information at face value around here.
Suddenly, Emily stopped short.
“What’s…” Your words trailed as you followed her line of vision. There was a frilly pair of underwear on the ground.
That led to a hoodie strewn in the dirt and dead leaves. You continued on, until you found Mary, lying on her back on the cold ground. You and Emily gasped her name, but you moved first, dropping to your knees at Mary’s side. You pressed a hand to her cheek and found it cold.
You moved two fingers to the pulse point at her neck, but there was nothing. No life in her. Your mouth fell open in a silent, shocked cry.
“Mary? Honey, can you hear me?” you tried, shaking her shoulders. When she remained unresponsive, tears burned in your eyes and blurred your vision. You finally saw a dark patch of wet pooled out from under her body.
“Oh my God,” Emily said, voicing your thoughts. She was panicked. “Oh God, she’s…she’s…”
You turned to her and wanted to say, Don’t look.
You had briefly taught highschoolers before you became a college professor. You were used to looking out for your students, and as the adult here, you wanted to shield the teen from the sight of this, no matter how much your mind was spinning.
Before you could say anything, Emily fled the clearing with a scream.
“Emily!” you shouted after her. You glanced back at Mary in desperation, but you forced yourself onto your feet and ran after the girl.
You had slightly longer legs, but she was fast. You only caught up to her because she screamed louder, after running into Buck leading a horse through the woods. She grabbed onto him while you caught your breath behind her.
“What? What happened?” Buck asked. You laid a supportive hand on Emily’s shoulder, and she turned back to you with tearful eyes.
“Mary,” you managed, despite the coarseness in your voice. “She’s…”
This isn’t real, you thought. It’s not real. It’s not real. It’s not real.
“She’s dead,” Emily finished for you. “Someone killed her.”
Buck’s eyes widened in shock. All he could say was…
“Show me.”
Buck brought Mary’s body back to camp on the back of his horse. The three of you walked in silence all the way there. You couldn’t bring yourself to look at her lifeless body. It was wrong. And if you did, you knew you’d collapse.
Emily was likely in shock as well. Her arm was looped through yours, though you weren’t sure who was steadying who.
Thanks to Carla, the police were already on the way to Sunny Day Excursions. When you reached the camp, Carla beelined for her daughter. Despite how happy she was to see her mom, Emily was a bit reluctant to let go of you, seeing how shaken you were, but you encouraged her wordless to go to her mother.
Carla pulled Emily into a tight hug, kissing the side of her head, and asked if she was all right. Emily just shook her head and pressed her face into her mom’s shoulder. Carla looked up at you with a relieved sigh.
“Thank you,” she said.
You gave her teary smile of your own. You couldn’t speak though, especially when Buck passed by with Mary still on the back of his horse. Sunny gasped and grabbed a blanket to cover the body with.
She then went to you, whispering, “You poor dear. Come ‘ere, sit by the fire.”
She covered your shoulders with another blanket and steered you to sit by the bonfire in the center of camp. You stayed there and stared at the flames. All the while, you didn’t feel the warmth. You didn’t feel the silent tears that slid down your face and dropped into your lap.
“Where’s Luke?” you heard Avery ask.
“That’s a good question,” said Sunny. She turned to her husband. “Buck?”
“I don’t know, but somebody better find him,” he replied grimly.
It was another hour before the police arrived.
You still hadn’t moved from your spot in front of the bonfire on a hard bench, but it was Cormack who gently asked you if you wanted to go back to your tent to relax until the police got around to talking to you about what happened.
You’d agreed, silently, and he helped you up. But you found that you could go no further than the couple of steps that brought you onto the platform outside of your tent. The tent you’d shared with Mary.
You couldn’t go in, and Cormack seemed to realize that. He helped you lower down to sit on the platform, with your dirty sneakers planted on the step below. He gave you a cup of hot tea as well, which you held with both hands and sipped slowly.
You only raised your head when you heard Emily’s voice exclaim in happiness. You watched her run to her father, the Sheriff. He welcomed his daughter into his arms and held her tight. Relief was painted all over his face. You heard the rumble of his voice asking her if she was all right. She just burrowed closer in the safety of his arms.
A blonde policewoman had come with him, along with a whole unit of officers. She went to question Buck and Sunny first, while Beau handled Emily, then Avery and Carla. It didn’t seem like a pleasant conversation, between the two men especially.
Don’t stare, you reminded yourself. You lowered your gaze to the dusty bottom stair between your feet. Your vision started to glaze over the longer you focused on that spot. You weren’t lost in thought. You were just…blank. This entire night still didn’t feel real.
Mary’s last words kept ringing through your mind…
“Look, I’m sorry for everything, okay?” she’d said. “I know I can be a brat sometimes…but we can talk more when I get back.”
You were interrupted from your reverie when two brown boots entered your line of vision. You looked up, and Beau Arlen was there to greet you with a look of sympathy. And yet, there was a professional set to his face that let you know you were about to be formally questioned about Mary’s death.
“Is that spot taken?” Beau asked, pointing to the space beside you on the platform. You shook your head and scooched over, so he could sit down. He sighed on his way there, greeting you with polite familiarity.
“Sheriff,” you nodded back. You set aside your mug of tea and crossed your arms, holding yourself against the chill.
You’d left the blanket by the bonfire, and your sweater had been stained with blood, after helping Buck set Mary’s body on the horse. You’d ripped the sweater off as soon as you got to camp, leaving you in just your undershirt.
“You need a jacket,” Beau remarked. He glanced back at your tent, as if he was wondering why you hadn’t gone inside to grab one. But his gaze was perceptive. Instead of asking, he shrugged out of his faux fur-lined leather jacket and draped it around your shoulders.
“Here, you can borrow this for now,” he said.
“Thank you,” you spoke in a small voice. You grasped one edge of the jacket and pulled it closer around you. It smelled like musky cologne and old leather.
Beau waved off his gesture of kindness.
“I hear you found my daughter in the woods and tried to get her back to camp,” he said. “Thank you for that.”
You glanced over at him, and tears once again shone in your eyes.
“I’m sorry she had to see…”
Beau’s gaze was heavy as he sighed and nodded again in agreement.
“I’m sorry you had to see it too,” he said. “And I’m sorry for your loss. For your friend.”
You took in a shuddering breath. New tears found familiar paths down your cheeks.
“Best friend, since college,” you said.
Beau took that in, before he asked you about the day’s events. You had to explain about Mary going missing first, then Emily, and finally Luke, who still hadn’t been found. You told everything you knew from your perspective.
When you were done, Beau reluctantly asked about the Mary and Luke situation. Your lips pursed, but your upset wasn’t at the sheriff. You knew he had to ask these questions.
“We argued about it,” you admitted. “Me and Mary. I warned her not to get involved with him, and the way Paige left camp was just one of many…but still, I should’ve been there. I shouldn’t have let her go into the woods alone! I should’ve gone with her!”
By the end, your whole body wracked with sobs. You covered your face with your hands to try and get some semblance of composure, but you just couldn’t keep it together.
“Okay, okay,” Beau said gently. He laid a hand on your back and rubbed back and forth. “I’m sorry, darlin’. I am.”
You sucked in a few tremulous breaths, sniffling. You looked up at him with red, watery eyes. He gave you a half smile.
“Sorry,” he repeated, this time for the endearment. “Like I said, got a bad habit of doin’ that.”
You shook your head with a weak curve of your lips, despite how your lower lip wobbled.
“It’s okay,” you said.
But it wasn’t. Nothing was.
You didn’t think you’d ever be okay again.
AN: 😥 I'm sorry about Mary, but I promise, it's all for a purpose, besides following canon. But let me know what you think! There will be much more of the reader and Beau in the next chapter, though you may not expect how their next meeting comes about...
Next Time:
“We’re gonna start here in a few minutes, but until then, you can take a seat,” said Tom. “There’s also coffee and cookies over there, if you like.”
Coffee. Coffee was warm, and it might settle your nerves and help you perk up a bit. You thanked him and went for the carafes on a small table in the back. You poured some coffee into a Styrofoam cup and poured a little sugar and creamer into it, but after you took an experimental sip, you immediately regretted it.
Tastes like damn soil water! You made a grossed out sound and spat it back into your cup.
“Yeah, wouldn’t recommend the joe,” drawled a familiar voice.
You turned sharply to find Sheriff Beau Arlen.

Ultraviolence
Logan Howlett x Female Mutant Reader
PART 2
Summary: Logan goes into the past to stop Raven from killing Boliver Trask. He knows that he is going to require the assistance of Charles and Eric. Will he be thrown off course when he encounters a familiar face at Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters?
TW: Toxic relationships, manipulation, abuse of powers, time travel, mentions of blood.
An awkward silence had settled in Xavier's mansion after Y/N retreated to her bedroom. Charles made his way into the study as Hank turned to Logan, "Y/N can't control her mutation. If she used her powers on you, your mind would fracture... It would be like detonating a bomb in your skull," Hank said.
"How long has she been struggling to control it?" Logan questioned.
Hank exhaled, scratching the back of his neck, "Since I've known her... She had a better grasp on it before, but then with what happened to her mother, she just let it overwhelm her," Hank said.
"What happened to her mother?" Logan asked.
"I-it's really not my place to say," Hank said.
"Well, make it your place," Logan pressed, turning to face him.
Hank sighed and shifted uncomfortably on his feet, "She was having a nightmare and she lashed out with her powers. Her mother had come in to check on her and she died. Autopsy showed over thirty aneurysms in her brain," Hank said.
"Guessing that it didn't go down well with the rest of her family?" Logan questioned.
"No, her father blamed her and the rest of the family turned on her. She was on her own until Charles found her with Cerebro. I think the death of her mother made her realize how powerful she really was and it scared her... She hasn't used her powers since then," Hank said.
"Not once?" Logan asked.
"No, Charles tried to encourage her, but she refused every time," Hank said.
"I have someone who might be able to help us get to Erik. But we're gonna need Y/N or Charles either way," Logan said.
"Logan-," Hank started.
"I'm gonna talk to her, I know I can get through to her," Logan stated.
"Good luck," Hank muttered before making his way up the stairs.
...
Logan knocked on the door to Y/N's bedroom, he had absolutely no idea of what he was going to say to her, but he had to say something.
Y/N opened the door, "What do you want from me, asshole?" Y/N questioned.
"Look, I'm sorry for coming on so strong. You and I have a rocky relationship where I'm from and I just assumed that you were the same person," Logan said.
"I'm not the same person?" Y/N questioned.
"No, you're scared," Logan said.
Y/N scowled, moving to close the door, Logan wedged his foot in the doorway. Y/N huffed, "Move the foot before I break it," She snapped.
"Being scared isn't a bad thing, kid. It's just different from the version of you that I know, but I can help you," Logan said.
"No one can help me," Y/N stated. The finality in her tone made it obvious to Logan that she wasn't going to make it easy for him. Y/N had always been an immovable object, but he was unstoppable force and he didn't plan on giving up anytime soon.
"I know you and I know what you can do... You're one of the most powerful people I've ever met and I trust you with that power," Logan said.
"You trust me?" Y/N asked.
"With my life," Logan stated.
She stared at him for a moment before she narrowed her eyes, "You're full of shit," She said.
"Didn't need your powers for that one, huh?" Logan questioned.
"What are we to each other where you come from?" Y/N asked, irritation creeping into her voice.
"I don't know... I care about you, but I hate you more than anyone I've ever met," Logan said.
"Sounds like a match made in heaven," Y/N deadpanned. She moved away from the door and Logan stepped into her bedroom, closing the door behind himself.
"We are," Logan stated.
"How exactly do you think you can help me, Logan?" She asked.
"I'll be your crash test dummy. You've been playing around in my head for years because you knew that I could take it," Logan said.
"I'd kill you," Y/N said.
"I can heal," Logan replied.
"Why do you care if I have my powers or not?" Y/N asked, beginning to become exasperated with the conversation.
"Because we're gonna need 'em," Logan stated, holding his hand out.
"You can't be serious," Y/N said, looking between him and his outstretched hand incredulously.
"I am... Just try and be gentle, alright?" Logan said, shifting on his feet.
"Try and be gentle?" Y/N asked.
"Yeah, light like a feather, don't hit me like a semi... C'mon, you got this," Logan said.
Y/N warily held out her hand, the tip of her pointer finger barely making contact with his before a zap of her power surged through him.
It ran through his body like a lightning bolt, bringing him to his knees in front of her with a ragged gasp. He felt the connection to his future body quake with the force. Logan hoped that Kat would be able to hold onto him despite Y/N's interference.
Y/N quickly pulled her hand back to her chest, "I can't do this," Y/N stated.
"Yeah, you can. Go again, don't be scared of it," Logan said, holding out his hand again from his place on the floor.
"Are you crazy? I'm gonna kill you," Y/N snapped.
"Not dead yet," Logan said.
"My god, men are stupid. You're sticking your hand in a wasp nest and wondering why you're getting stung," Y/N muttered.
"Yeah, yeah, go again," Logan said, waving his hand around impatiently.
Y/N huffed, stepping closer to him and reaching out her hand. She hesitated before making contact, "Can you try to focus on something? Just one thing to keep me from going off course," Y/N asked, Logan nodded.
Y/N took a breath, "Hey, trust yourself. If you're scared of what you can do, you'll turn my brain to oatmeal. You control it, it doesn't control you," Logan instructed.
Y/N reached out, her fingers touching his gently as her power spread through him. This time it was different, it was warm and the energy probed at the edge of his mind before slowly sinking in. She was careful and focused, not quite wielding her power to the extent that Logan had experienced before.
Logan's eyes glowed purple as she looked into his thoughts, brow furrowing as she saw the memory he had chosen.
"Zip me up, would you?" Y/N asked. Logan moved up behind her, shirtless and wearing a pair of faded jeans. His fingers found the zipper of her dress, dragging it up her back before pressing his lips to the side of her neck.
"You look pretty," He stated, hands settling on her hips.
"Do I?" Y/N questioned coyly, staring up at him in the mirror.
"Course you do," Logan said.
Y/N rested her hand over his, her power rushing through him and invading his mind. He pulled away quickly, "I hate it when you do that," He snapped.
"Is there something that you don't want me to see?" Y/N asked.
Logan huffed, "I just don't want you rooting around in my head all the time, is that too much to ask?" Logan questioned.
"With me? Yes," Y/N said.
Logan shook his head, "My thoughts aren't meant to be your personal playground, Y/N. Lately, I don't even know if my thoughts are mine or shit you planted there," Logan said.
"You think I'm capable of that?" Y/N asked.
"That and more. You want this, you want me, so badly that you're forcing two pieces of a puzzle together that don't fit," Logan said.
"Stop," Y/N commanded.
Logan's body relaxed, the tension leaving his muscles as he stared at her. He was still angry, seething even, but he felt like he had been locked in a box. Logan was trapped in his own mind and he couldn't escape no matter how hard he fought.
"Tell me you love me and we can move on from this," Y/N said.
"I love you," Logan stated.
"Good," Y/N nodded, turning back to her mirror.
Y/N pulled her hand back from Logan's, a confused look on her face as she stared down at him. Logan stood up, "What was that?" Y/N asked.
"That was us," Logan said.
"I treated you like that?" Y/N questioned.
"Yeah," Logan nodded.
"I'm sorry," Y/N said.
"So am I, but I needed you to see it," Logan said.
"Why?" Y/N asked.
"Because you can change our future... I care about you, but I never got a chance to know you. You knew everything you could possibly know about me, but you went through my thoughts to learn it... I know we have bigger fish to fry right now, but I needed you to understand what you grow up to be, alright?" Logan said.
Y/N nodded, "Well, this is shitty timing, but can I go through your memories to see what we're up against?" She asked, holding up her hand.
"Go for it," Logan said.
Her hand rested on his chest, power sinking into him and travelling up to his head. His eyes glowed as she looked through his memories, leafing through them like pages of a book before she began to follow a thread.
...
Kat grimaced, "There's something pushing back against me. I-I don't know what it is," She said, a panicked tone in her voice.
Y/N stepped forward quickly, hand resting on Kat's shoulder before her power invaded the girl's mind. She closed her eyes for a moment before they opened again, glowing bright purple as she tried to protect the connection.
"What's happening?" Erik asked.
"Logan got through to Y/N. She is using her powers again," Charles said.
Y/N suddenly saw herself in the past, "Charles, what do I do?" She asked.
"Talk to her," He instructed.
"I don't- I can't do this," Y/N said.
"Yes, you can," Charles assured.
"I'm not the person she needs to hear from right now, Professor," Y/N said.
"You are the only one she needs to hear from," Charles stated.
Y/N shifted uncomfortably before pressing forward into their connection, "Our best chance at survival hinges on Y/N being able to get along with another person... Anyone else not feeling great about our chances?" Bobby questioned.
"She'll be fine," Charles assured.
Y/N closed her eyes, seeing herself standing with Logan in her room at Xavier's School, "How much did he show you?" Y/N questioned, her past self turned to face her.
"He showed me what I needed to see," The past version of Y/N said.
"There are a lot of things that happened in my life between then and now. Things that-," "That made you a monster?" Past Y/N questioned.
Y/N huffed, "Listen, kid, things are falling apart here and we need you to help us fix things," She stated.
"Did you love Logan?" Y/N from the past asked.
Y/N hesitated, "That isn't what we need to be talking about right now," She said.
"It's what I want to talk about. I don't have any skin in the game at this point and probably won't for at least fifty years," Past Y/N said.
Y/N huffed, "Little bitch," She muttered.
"Well? Did you love him?" Y/N from the past questioned.
Y/N looked over at Logan, "I did love him, but he left," She said simply.
Past Y/N shook her head, "That's not what happened... You forced him away," She said.
Y/N took a shaky breath, "Stop," She muttered.
"He hates you. I can feel it. Logan hates you, but he can't let you go because you forced your way into his life. You planted thoughts in his head and locked him away when he fought back. You're like a parasite," Past Y/N stated with disgust.
"Stop it," Y/N repeated, barely containing her rage. Purple tendrils of power spread out around her, singeing the floor and walls.
Kat shifted, "I'm losing him," She mumbled, struggling to maintain the connection despite Y/N's power striking back against it.
"She's going to get them both killed," Bobby said.
"Give her a chance," Charles advised.
Y/N took a breath, steadying herself and reigning in her power, "Fine, I fucked up his life. I loved him and I trapped him because I knew he wouldn't stay. Then he left without a word and proved me right," Y/N stated.
"He would have stayed if you gave him a choice... You saw everything that I have and you know I'm right," Past Y/N said.
"What do you want from me?" Y/N asked.
"I want to know what happened to us. What made me turn into this?" Past Y/N asked, gesturing to Y/N.
"Too much," She stated.
"I'm sorry," Past Y/N said.
"Logan needs your help, if you pull this off, I won't exist and your life can take a different direction... For your sake, I hope it does," Y/N said, glancing over at Logan.
"I'll help him," Past Y/N said.
Y/N nodded, slipping back through the connection and opening her eyes to find Charles by her side. Blood dripped from her nose and ears, body utterly exhausted from the strain of maintaining the connection for so long.
"Were you able to speak to her?" Charles asked, Y/N nodded.
Her knees gave out, sending her dropping down to the dusty ground below. Y/N slumped against the table, breathing heavily as she tried to regain her strength.
"Are you alright?" Charles asked, she nodded.
"She's going to help him," Y/N mumbled.
"Then we might stand a chance," Erik stated.

Zen, the pathfinding hound.

┈ ⋞ 〈 ⏣ 〉 ⋟ ┈
Trivia:
Ais route
Hound background
This is a self insert so it's gonna share a lot of traits I do. It also shares the usual notable zen-sona traits. Sometimes I'll refer to him as "me" because well. he is me yk?
Autistic, ADHD, OCD-C
Germaphobe and emetophobe
AFAB/Transmasc, He/Him/It/Its
As stated, he's a bounty hunter. He's a skilled assassin that specializes in close combat/hand-to-hand combat. He loves his twin swords a... normal amount (he's obsessed with them and treats them like his children).
He's short, but very fast and agile. He used to be called weasel or pest as a kid because of how slippery and evasive he was.
Enjoys sparring with Mhin and Ais.
Good street smarts and perception skills.
Fox symbolism
Some people think it comes off as apathetic, but really it just has a unique way of expressing itself.
Unstoppable force, meet immovable object!
Not Quite Human But That's A Secret For Later!
It wears glasses sometimes, usually when reading. They usually get in the way normally, so it just sticks to having shitty vision on the daily. It ends up getting contacts from Kuras.
Did I mention his twin swords were magic? No? Yeah I won't elaborate.
Has his fair share of book smarts as well, but never really lets it shine 'cause he doesn't care all too much.
Loves cats and even used to have one! Now, it just loves animals in general and never passes up the chance to pet a domesticated animal... or wild one.
I Do Not Like Leander.
Enjoys banter to the point where it's pretty much his love language along with parallel play. He loves the playful back and forth, especially with Ais.
Smartass.
Heavily inspired by one of my f/os, Hoshina Soushiro, from Kaiju No. 8 (MWAH ILY SOUSH SORRY I STOLE YOUR SWORDS TEEHEE)
Voice claim is Dave Bayley of Glass Animals.

Backstory:
It's cold. So cold.
I can breathe, though.
All I feel is eerie suspension in drowning silence.
The water is so clean, so blue. It's the cleanest water I've ever seen in this world.
I don't want to stop drowning.
┈ ⋞ 〈 ⏣ 〉 ⋟ ┈
"Momma, what's wrong with my hands?"
She seems to hesitate, taking a deep breath. We had just got done trying to restrain and calm a kid down from the effects of my curse. A curse that drives people mad. In most cases, they try to attack me. Thankfully it wore off, but a lot of the townsfolk kept looking at me like I was a pest or a demon.
"You want the truth, kid? You're cursed," she kneels down taking my hands in hers, seemingly unaffected entirely by the curse, "and I'm pretty sure it's my fault you're cursed. I'm sorry, Zoey."
"But how?"
Her lips press into a thin line, contemplating her next words.
"S-...Something to do with your... late... father." She looks away, unable to look her daughter in the eye.
I look down at our connected hands, "Can I fix it?"
"No baby, I don't think you can. You'll have to keep your hands covered for the rest of your life. I'm so sorry, sweetheart."
I can feel tears welling up in my eyes, "Do you think my friends hate me now, momma?"
I could almost hear my mom's heart shattering at my tears. She doesn't respond and just hugs me close to her.
The next day, she was sewing up a new pair of full-length gloves for me to wear.
At least she knew what fabric and leather I liked.
┈ ⋞ 〈 ⏣ 〉 ⋟ ┈
"Mom! I'm home!"
Another successful bounty completed. The reward was a lot higher than my usual gather, so I was excited to tell my mother that we'd be eating well for the next month.
All I was met with was silence, though.
"...Mom?"
Still no answer.
I go deeper into the home, checking through the rooms. She said she would be home this morning, so there's no reason she'd be gone. Unless there was an emergency? I've told her there's very few emergencies where she'd need to leave the house, especially with the threat of Fogfall and Soulless.
Fogfall appearances are getting higher, so I'm getting worried now.
"Mom, where are you??"
Nothing.
"Shit."
I start running through the house frantically, eventually pulling down the ladder to the attic. Looking in, I still can't hear or see anything. I scramble down and walk back outside, thinking she may be in the cellar.
I have to put a lot of force into opening the trapdoor, but going down there with a lit match and a candle that stays at the foot of the ladder, there was...
Something was down here. And it wasn't my mother.
My free hand immediately reached for a sword. I stayed completely still waiting to hear the movement of whatever was lurking in our basement.
"Zen?"
...My mother's voice?
No, that's not her.
That's not my mom.
I slowly set down the candle and position myself in proper stance with both hands ready to unsheathe my swords.
I wait.
Something blows the candle out and I tense up, ready to strike.
Footsteps come closer to me, and without thinking, I strike whatever is in front of me.
However, the candle miraculously relights just before I hit my target, and in a moment of clarity, I see my mother's face; a face full of terror as she realizes her son is attacking her.
Everything seems to go in slow motion. I'm moving too quickly to stop myself and before I know it, I'm dealing a fatal blow to my mother.
But... that's not my mom? Right?
The impostor falls to the ground clutching onto my belts in her last choking breaths.
"...Why?"
It sounds like her. Fuck it sounds like her. That's not her.
That's not her. That's not her.That'snotherthatsnotherthatsnot-
I hear slow clapping from behind me. The impostor's body slumps as it dies and I slowly turn to the presence behind me.
"Wh- what?"
It was me.
"Hey, I think you killed the wrong one."
.
.
.
"...Th..."
"That wasn't an impostor, Zen. That was your real mother."
I can feel myself losing balance. I can feel my head spinning.
"H-Huh?"
The thing in front of me morphs into an exact replica of my mother. I feel my stomach sink and bile rise to my throat. I shakily step backwards, tripping over my... mother's... dead body. I catch myself before I fall, but only just barely.
"You killed your mom, congratulations! It doesn't feel too nice, does it? Losing your mother isn't a great feeling, I'd assume. I would know," the thing comes closer and morphs into a familiar face. Her original face.
"You're..."
"You killed someone important to me, remember?"
This is... this was months ago...! I collected that bounty so long ago why is she only just now-!
"You know... it took a lot in me not to hunt you down and kill you immediately. I think this will serve as a good lesson for you, bounty hunter."
I don't think. As she turns around to leave, I throw my left sword down and I pull off my gloves to grab her wrist. I know exactly what's going to happen when she comes in contact with my bare hands.
The switch is instantaneous. She's gone mad in split seconds. She lunges for me, trying to swipe at anything that'd hurt me. I slice her neck with my right sword and I know I struck gold when blood splatters all over me. I hit her arteries.
She's dead in seconds.
I kick her off of me as she dies and let silence fill the air.
I can feel the panic returning after my bout of dissociative instinctual actions and I shakily turn my body towards my mother.
I'm covered in both Andri's blood, and my mother's. I pick up my mother's body and hold her close, her last word sounding so betrayed and hurt plays over and over in my mind.
I killed my mother.
I killed my mother.
No one heard my screams.
A human's mind is such a feeble thing.
┈ ⋞ 〈 ⏣ 〉 ⋟ ┈
I throw down the shovel, having finished burying my mother. Everything hurts. I'm still covered in her blood.
I'm sorry, mom. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry, please forgive me.
I'm sorry.
I'm so sorry.
I'm so sorry...
I want to go back in time. You shouldn't be dead right now. I shouldn't have taken that job all those months ago. I'm so sorry.
With the money I got from the bounty I just finished, I start walking through the town, devoid of any emotion. I can't stay here. I have to run. They'll all find out that my mom's blood is on my hands. My cursed hands. They'll burn me at the stake.
I have to run. I have to get out of here. I have to find a cure. I need answers. I need to know about shapeshifters. I need to- I need-
I need to drown again.

Could I request Buddha and Qin Shi Huang (seperate if its okay) with fem reader that has bunny ears and a bunny tail (some smut if that's okay :3)
As per this post, I said I won't write lime/lemon, that includes smut However I will write sfw headcanons for both men Fair warning: I haven't read the manga, so pray for my Qin
Request Chungus ML Record of Ragnarok ML Buddha x f bunny!reader, Qin Shi Huang x f bunny!reader Genres: Headcanons|Fluff|Romantic
Funny Bunny
Buddha
Now let's go with the quick assumption you're a spirit of some type, that means you've probably been in Valhalla your whole life
With this, you have most definitely seen Buddha around
He chills with nature and you kinda are nature?? You may have even hung out with him before Ragnarok started
Either way, you both didn't get along at first
Yeah you kinda look like a bunny, but you aren't one... having him give you carrots all the time got pretty insulting
Eventually you snapped and told him that the ears and tails didn't limit what you could eat, plus carrots aren't even nutritional to rabbits!
He has promoted you to broccoli, but he ain't sharing that candy
Yes, you two are like the cutest couple, but also happen to be the sassiest
For a spirit you sure can carry the wrath of a god
He will pet your ears but consensually, we don't talk about the last incident
Overall, y'all are just some silly, go with the flow fellas, 10/10 couple
Qin Shi Huang
Bro I'm gonna be honest, neither one of y'all remember how you met
One day he just spawned and you had to learn to tolerate him
You still question how a blind man was able to snatch your ears and feel them, how did you not see him there?
It doesn't matter now, he wouldn't dare do such a thing now
At least when he shares food it's a decent variety, you've been upgraded to fruits and even meat if you want
Not quite a power duo, but more of a "fuck around and find out" couple
He has to skills to back up his confidence, you have deception to hide your abilities, kinda OP if you ask me
You will actively rant to him about how humans clearly don't understand food and animal compatibility
You've never gotten a carrot from him, not even indirectly, purely from your ranting
This is a fair relationship though, so he rants back about gods being absolute idiots
Overall, y'all are an unstoppable force in Valhalla, there is no immovable object for you two, also 10/10
praying these turned out decent
i got a bit silly with this one if you couldnt tell

I took the good times, I'll take the bad times II Joel Miller
Summary: Joel doesn't think he's deserving of love after all he did and all he went trough. Or maybe he's just scared. Either way he can't let himself fall for (Y/N). Now if only she'd stop sending him those damn postcards.
Pairing: Joel Miller x Female Reader (I always try not to describe the reader physically, if I missed something please let me know so I can change it and make this "applicable" to every reader. Thank you!)
A/N: This is my entry for the dear-uary challenge by @jolapeno . My prompt was "Character A keeps finding X and traces them back to Character B, who might be leaving them intentionally—or not." And I chose Postcards as my form of epistolary.
TW: This is mostly angsty fluff. There is some talk of self doubt and loss of a child but I think that should be it.
Likes, reblogs, comments are all much appreciated. I am German. Sometimes I get the tense wrong or make mistakes. I am useless when it comes to punctuation. Go easy on me, please.
It all starts with a simple postcard tucked into the side pocket of his bag. Joel almost doesn’t realize it’s there, folded twice into a tiny square. It’s only when he’s looking for the list Maria gave him of all the things to look for on this run, that he grabs a hold of the card.
His gloves make it hard to unfold the small paper but it’s way too cold to take them off. Joel was never big on winter and snow, even before everything went to shit. He doesn’t like the way it lingers, the way it consumes you from the inside out. Now, an unforgiving cold is all he feels as a thick blanket of snow has settled upon Wyoming.
Bold bright letters scream out to him from the wrinkled paper “ Greetings from Tampa Florida. Wish you were here!”.
It’s one of those campy vintage ones where the letters are filled with drawings of landmarks and beaches. He remembers sending one just like this to his High School girlfriend when Dad took him and Tommy on a trip to Nashville when Joel was 16 maybe 17. It was a good trip, the last one they ever took together. Sometimes Joel wonders how his dad would deal with all of this. This new reality. This fucked up world. He always seemed so strong, so fearless. That man was unstoppable force and immovable object all at once. Every vulnerability Joel finds in himself, he’s sure was absent in his father. Maybe if he was a little more like his own dad he could’ve saved Sarah, could’ve spared Ellie the pain of living in this limbo of knowing and not knowing. Maybe, maybe, maybe.
Joel moves closer to the fire, his only light source other than the stars. There’s writing on the back, blue ink on off-white paper. It’s not a handwriting he knows and for a second he wonders if the card has been there ever since he found the bag years ago, back in Boston. But he would know that, right? Would've found it by now. This must be new. This must be meant for him.

“ I know you hate the cold. I know it makes you sad and gloomy, well gloomier than usual. So let me tell you about the hottest day I ever experienced. I was a kid, maybe 7 or 8 and my mom took me to Florida. Not Tampa (it was the only postcard I could find at the library), but Orlando. We went to fucking Disney World!! We didn’t have a lot of money back then so mom must’ve saved a long time for this. Anyway, Joel, it was so hot. Unbearably hot. My clothes stuck to my skin and my hair got all frizzy. Maybe July wasn’t the best time to go. The air was so thick and heavy, so moist (ew). It felt like breathing in honey, syrup maybe. I still had the best time. I know it doesn’t take away the cold but I hope I can take you away to that hot and humid Florida summer for one small moment. If not, there’s a wool scarf at the bottom of your bag. Made it myself. You never told me what your favorite color is. I hope you like blue. xx
P.S.: I wonder what happened to Disney World.”
A chuckle falls from Joel’s lips and forms a cloud against the sharp winter air. He's never been to Disney World. The Millers just weren’t a Disney World kind of family. They were more of a local fair kind of family. All corn dogs and funnel cakes and first kisses behind the bumper cars. Sarah would’ve loved Disney World though. Ellie too. Ellie who doesn’t even know what the hell Disney is. 14 years and the girl has no idea who Mickey Mouse is. What a surreal thought. What a strange world. More than 20 years and it still feels strange. Joel wonders if life will ever let him settle in this new reality. If one day this feels like home and not a bad dream. Not a cosmic punishment. A bad joke that no one’s laughing at anymore.
His eyes travel back towards the blue swirly writing. It’s not Ellie’s bad chicken scratch, he could pick that out of a line-up any day. This looks much neater, more deliberate, and thoughtful.
“There’s a wool scarf at the bottom of your bag.”
Quiet, as not to wake up the others sleeping just a few steps away, Joel opens the zipper on his bag and rummages through it with a gloved hand. There’s a bunch of stuff in there, food rations, ammunition, a second pair of gloves. Going on supply runs is not something Joel enjoys but it is a way for him to give back. To Tommy and Maria and the entire community. Jackson and its people have taken him and Ellie in as one of their own without much hesitation. They provided them with food, with shelter, with trust. He has so little to give in return. Going on a supply run to look for medicine and other necessities, that’s the least he can do.
Something soft and squishy meets his hand and he pulls out a dark blue woolen scarf. There are so many holes and even in the dim light of the campfire, Joel can tell those holes are not there on purpose. Maybe it was Ellie after all, but then she never showed any interest in knitting, and the idea of her doing just that is far too ridiculous. No matter how imperfect it is though, Joel has to admit the scarf does make him feel warmer as he wraps it around his neck.
“Hey,” Adam, one of the other guys on the run, speaks up from beside Joel, “you can catch some sleep if you want. I can take over the watch.”
It’s a strange thing, how sometimes you don’t notice just how tired you are or how hungry you are until someone points it out to you. Until they offer to take it from you. Then it hits you like a brick to the face. A wave pulling you under.
Joel feels his eyelids grow heavy and nods at the younger man. "Thanks".
This mystery, it can wait until tomorrow. Until then he will bury his face in the warm soft wool of the scarf and think of that Florida sun. And though it most definitely is just his imagination, Joel could almost swear the night feels a little less cold.
His boots leave deep imprints in the white icy blanket as he makes his way past the Tipsy Bison and the community hall further towards his house. His home.
No place has really felt like home in years. Not since all of this started. Everything was temporary. 4 walls and a roof. He wonders if this place will ever start feeling like home? Will he ever get to a point where he doesn’t wait for the second shoe to drop? It all feels like he’s Charlie Brown and life is Lucy pulling the football away at the last second. And it always ends with him falling. He’s so tired of falling. So tired of getting back up.
Joel almost expects the house to be silent as he steps inside. Ellie is slowly making friends with the other teens living in the settlement and is spending more time at their houses than she is at home. He can’t blame her. If he was more like his father he’d find it in himself to start conversations with people, get to know them, forge connections, make friends. Of the Miller boys, Tommy is the one who inherited their dad’s social gene though, Joel only got the snarl and the crippling inability to talk about his feelings.
Laughter echoes through the house as Joel rounds the corner connecting the entryway to the living room. Ellie’s laughter, loud and bright and light. As if for a moment all the horrors and the pain and the trauma have been taken from her.
When he steps into the kitchen, Joel understands.
(Y/N) is standing by the counter, a smile on her face so soft and radiant it might just rival the sun. That joy she brings out in Ellie, it’s familiar to Joel because he feels it too whenever (Y/N) is around. Not always but sometimes. It’s a spark of warmth that starts in his chest and crawls up his spine. It settles in his lungs, his heart, his brain. Like a parasite. Like a virus. Like a wonderful dream. He doesn’t allow himself to feel it all the time but sometimes, sometimes he can’t deny himself this little bit of warmth.
Joel can’t even remember when exactly (Y/N) became a part of their life. It’s like one day she was there and refused to leave. And really that’s kind of how it went. She works at the library and the school, lives across the street from him and Ellie and for some reason, she’s taken pity on them. Joel isn’t sure if it's him or Ellie she pities. Maybe a mix of both. Either way, she brought over some soup one day and that’s the beginning and end of it all. She’s wormed her way into Ellie’s heart and by extension his too. Whether he likes to admit it or not. Doesn't hurt that she's so damn beautiful too.
“Joel, you’re back!”
Ellie pulls him in a tight hug. It’s something Joel still has to get used to. Ellie isn’t a particularly affectionate person. She’s definitely not a hugger. And neither is Joel — not anymore at least. So when they do hug, it’s still a little strange. Not bad strange just unfamiliar.
“Yeah, I’m back.
“How did it go?” (Y/N) asks and meets his eyes over Ellie’s head. A silent conversation happening between her and Joel. It’s that thing she does where she doesn’t need to say a single word but Joel can tell exactly what she’s thinking just by the look in her eyes. He sometimes wonders if this is a them thing.
“Did someone die” her eyes are saying. “Did someone get hurt?”
“Did you get hurt?”
He quickly shakes his head answering her unspoken questions. Not this time.
“Good. It went good.”
Maybe the relieved sigh he sees her let out is just his imagination. But Joel doesn’t think so. Joel thinks it's very real.
“Did you bring us something? “
He can’t help but smile at that. It feels good to smile. In a world that gives you grief and sorrow, you start to count the moments when it gives you a reason to smile. They are few and far between but the number has surely increased since Ellie stepped into his life — and since (Y/N) did.
“I brought food and medicine. Isn’t that enough? “
A determined “no” falls from both their lips in a chaotic harmony.
“Geez, you guys are demanding.”
“Well — did you bring us something?”
Joel just rolls his eyes and rummages through his bag for the goods.
“For you— “ he says and throws the old wrinkled comic book towards Ellie who regards it with that endless sense of wonder she does possess. It’s the kind of spark that flickers and dies once you grow old. Or maybe just his did. Maybe grief leaves no room for wonder.
Placing his bag on the ground, Joel moves into the kitchen and holds out his loot to (Y/N). Green background. White goats. Yellow bubble letters.
“Oooooh, you did get me something. Pet Sounds, nice!”
There’s a spark in her too. Dulled and dusted from time but it is there and it flickers and grows every time Joel brings her a vinyl record from his trips outside of the settlement. In a world with so little joy, music seems to be one of the few things that hasn’t changed. In the face of immeasurable pain, humans turn to music. They have done so for a long time and judging by the world as is, they always will.
“I hope it works still. Didn’t really have a record player to try it out.”
“I’ll try it out as soon as I get to the library. Feel free to come by and listen with me.”
“Sure.”
“Thank you, Joel. I hope you didn’t have to do anything stupid to get this.”
He didn’t. Not this time. He would’ve though. It scares him how willing he is to put himself in danger just to get her something that will put that radiant smile on her face. He’d walk to the end of the earth if he knew there was a record there she wanted. That thought scares the shit out of him. It’s bad enough he cares so deeply about Ellie, about Tommy. The more people you care about, the more you open yourself up to hurt. Losing either of them would tear him apart. Joel is not sure he can handle opening his heart to yet another person no matter how much his heart wants just that.
“ Nah. No issues.”
“Good.”
She just looks at him for a moment. All soft eyes and gentle smile. There must be something she sees in him, Joel thinks, something he doesn’t see. A version of himself that he isn’t, that he will never be. A version he once was, maybe. A version he so desperately wishes he could be. For her.
“Well,” (Y/N) says and snaps him out of her enchantment “Ellie and I made some stew. I know you must’ve been freezing outside, some good warm stew might help warm you up a little.”
“It smells great.”
“You have impeccable timing because we just got done. So, dig in. And uh — I guess I’ll see you guys at the movie screening?”
He doesn’t want her to leave. The devil and the angel on his shoulders are both screaming at him to ask her to stay. And if he was any stronger a man, any more like his own father and more deserving of good things, he would ask her. To stay for dinner. To stay forever.
But he isn’t. And he doesn’t ask. Just watches as she wraps a scarf around her neck and slips into the thick jacket that's a few sizes too big on her.
“I left the recipe by the fridge. Just in case you ever want to cook it yourself.”
“Thanks.”
And he really is grateful. For her. For everything.
“Oh Joel,” she says and stops in the doorway. “I like that scarf. Blue looks really good on you.”
And then she’s gone, swallowed by the cold winter air.
Joel hasn’t thought about his favorite color in forever. It’s something you stop thinking about once you start growing hair on your chest and fantasizing about girls in a way you haven’t before. Kids talk about their favorite colors all the time. Sarah did. It’s just once you grow old you lose that sense of self, define yourself through different things.
Looking at the scarf now, all holes and imperfections, there is no doubt in his mind that his favorite color is blue.
“Have you ever been to Paris?”
The lights are dimmed in the big community hall, the movie playing on screen providing the only source of light as the people of Jackson have gathered for another movie night.
A glimpse into a world that was but no longer is and never will be again. And for some of them, like Ellie, a world that never was to begin with.
Ellie is sitting in the front with some of the other teens, her friends, Joel supposes. She has friends now.
“Joel, have you?”
A soft hand rests on his arm, shaking him from his gloomy thoughts. (Y/N) sits next to him, eyes focused on the pictures dancing across the screen. Ilsa and Rick, falling in love over and over again in Paris. The beginning of a love story doomed from the start.
“I uh — no. Never.”
“Me neither. I would’ve loved to go though. It looks beautiful.”
He doesn’t know why or how it happens but the words just flow from his mouth like a waterfall. For the first time in a while, he finds himself wanting to talk more. About the past. About Sarah.
“My daughter, Sarah, went to Paris once. Some school exchange program. They don’t usually do it until later but her French class was above average and I guess they won some contest. I don’t know it was a long time ago.”
“Sounds like she was a smart cookie.”
"Oh, she was. Too smart for me, that’s for sure. Was hard letting her leave and fly to a whole different continent though. I was scared out of my mind until she was back home. Drove Tommy crazy for a whole damn week.”
(Y/N) turns her face away from the screen and regards him with that infinite sense of something more. Soft and endearing. If he was a different man he would call it love. He would see the way she looks at him and he would kiss her stupid and life would be all sweet dreams and gentle touches.
But he is the man he is. Not worthy of whatever she is willing to give.
“What’re looking at me like that for?”
“It’s just sweet how much you care. About everyone. I think you don’t even know you’re doing it half the time.”
“Do what?”
“Care for others. For Ellie and me and all of us. You’re a good man, Joel Miller. I just wish you’d let someone take care of you for a change.”
He doesn’t need to be taken care of. He can do it all on his own. And anyway, he is not as good of a man as she thinks he is. Good men don’t have the blood of their loved ones stuck to their hands. Good men don’t let their daughters die in their arms. Good men don’t kill. Good men don’t do all the things he did.
Joel doesn’t want to be a good man. He just wishes he was good enough a man to allow himself to be with (Y/N).
“I ain’t a good man. And I don’t need someone to take care of me.”
“You wore that scarf, did you not? You allowed me to take care of you then.”
That damn scarf. He had a hunch it was her. The handwriting on the postcard matched the one of the recipe stuck to his fridge an awful lot. But it’s something else entirely to hear her say it outright.
“That was you, huh? Had an awful lot of holes that thing.”
“Hey, I never said I was good at knitting. You wore it anyway.”
Joel turns back towards the screen as Rick and Ilsa share a loving kiss.
“Yeah, I wore it anyway.”
And to the sound of bombs and tanks, (Y/N) rests her head on his shoulder.
That’s what you do for the people you love. Even if you don’t allow yourself to love them.
You wear the scarf anyway.
The mailbox flag is up. Bright red against the sharp white of the winter's day.
It’s never been up. People around here don’t get mail. It’s but an ancient relic of a life they used to live. Remnants of a society long gone.
But Joel is nothing if not curious. So he stomps up to the mailbox, leaving deep imprints in the freshly fallen snow.
It’s another postcard. Only this time it doesn’t come with a mystery. This time it comes with that silly little feeling that makes his heart beat just a little faster. That makes his head swirl with stupid thoughts of stupid dreams.
“From Paris with love,” it says on the front. Fucking Paris, of course.
Sometimes the way he feels about her is infuriating, confusing, scary.
And sometimes, like right now, it feels like a ball of warmth settles in his ribcage and warms him from the inside out.

“Dear Joel,
We’ll never have Paris. Not in this life at least. And while I would’ve loved to see the Eiffel Tower sparkle with you and make you eat a croissant (which you would’ve pretended to hate but I think you would’ve enjoyed it secretly), I am glad to get this life with you at least. Or alongside you. Whatever it is we are, I am glad this life gave me that in between all the pain. Despite what you like to tell yourself, Joel Miller, you are a spark of fire, a light in the dark. You are more than the sum of your failures, you are more than your pain. All the good that is in you, that counts. That’s all that matters in the end. And there is so much good in you.
I wish you’d let yourself see it.
We will never have Paris. But we’ll always have Jackson and that is enough for me. I hope it’s enough for you.
Here’s looking at you kid! ;) “
There’s a tragedy in knowing someone else sees all your good parts and none of the bad. A tragedy in knowing how much they like those good parts and being awfully aware that seeing all the bad parts would destroy them.
A tragedy in still wanting to show them all of you, even the ugly soul-destroying parts.
But if she thinks he’s a good man, then Joel needs to be just that. A good man who keeps those ugly parts hidden and away from her. Even if that means denying himself the one thing he wants.
“What’s that?” Ellie speaks up from beside him, a curious look on her face.
“Postcard.”
“Like what people would send from vacations and stuff?”
“Yeah, how do you know about that?”
She rolls his eyes at him and it’s one of those moments where he feels like a dad again. Those little moments that mean the world to him because he gets to feel like the old him. The Joel he thought was long dead and buried beside the bones of his own child.
“I watch movies? I talk to people? I read books? Take your pick.”
“Wow, when did you become such a smartass, huh?”
She shrugs his shoulders at him “Was born that way. Nothing I can do about it.”
“Unfortunately.”
“Hey, you’ve grown to love me! You wouldn’t want me any other way.”
And she isn’t wrong. Ellie, with all her curiosity and her bravery and her lust for life, whatever that life may look like, is exactly what he needed. Which makes him wonder if saving her from the fireflies was ultimately more of a selfish act than that of a heroic savior.
“Who’s it from?”
“None of your business.”
“Oh, so (Y/N).”
His eyes flick up and he is met with that satisfied, mischievous grin that is so uniquely Ellie.
“What makes you think that?”
“You always change the subject when I bring her up. And that way you just jumped when I mentioned her? Yeah, you’re not slick, old man.”
“Hey! Who are you calling an old man?”
“You! Old and scared!”
“I’m not scared!”
Like hell he is. Terrified even. But there ain’t no way in hell he’ll admit that to Ellie. She’ll never let him hear the end of it.
“Then go talk to her! She likes you, you like her. Why do you have to make it so complicated?”
If only she knew all the ghosts swirling around inside of him threatening to break free. Things could be so easy. Only nothing ever is.
“Mind your own business, kid! Anyway, don't you have someplace to be? Think Dina came by earlier asking for you. You two are getting along well, huh?”
“Aaaand on that note. See you for dinner, old man!”
She’s gone before he can even hurl a reply at her. It pulls his lips into a smile. There’s no better way to get a teen to shut up than to bring up their crush. Nice to see that some things never change.
Another run. Another record.
Joel feels silly, standing here in front of her door with his heart beating fast and heavy as he clutches the vinyl record in his hand.
If Ellie saw him now, she’d surely make fun of him. Tommy too. Sarah even.
What happened, Joel? You used to be so brave. What makes you so afraid now?
Life, he thinks. Life has made him scared and bitter and sad.
“Did you wanna knock or — ?”
Joel turns around as the voice calls out to him. There it is again, that softness, that smile.
“Uh, yes.”
“Okay, good. Did you come to see me? Sorry, I was helping Maria at the farm.”
“Yeah no uh — don’t worry about it. I just came to drop this off”
Her eyes grow wide as she catches sight of which record it is he’s holding up.
“No way! The stranger! You found it.”
“ I did.”
He had to clear an old dilapidated bar full of clickers to get that record. Almost lost his damn arm in the process. But her smile, that god-damn, life-ruining, world-shattering, heart-beat-faster, smile of hers makes it all worth it. He would give both arms, all of him. He would give it all to see her smile.
“Do you wanna come in and listen to it with me? Got my player fixed so I don’t have to use the one at the library anymore.”
Say no. Just say no and go home. Be a good man! Be a better man!
But he’s not. For this one moment, he can’t be that man. He’s just as weak as the rest of them.
“Sure.”
This feels so — normal. So before everything. Different and twisted and warped. But normal.
It’s scary and comforting all at once. Like a tipsy dream when you know you’ll wake up with a headache for sure.
(Y/N) is twirling around her living room, a beer in hand and a smile on her face. Joel leans against the door connecting her living room and her kitchen and all he can do is stare. At this woman who means so much to him. Too much for him to ever put into words. If he even knew how to. He’s never been a poet.
“I said I love you, that's forever
And this I promise from the heart, mmm
I couldn't love you any better
I love you just the way you are, right”
“I love this song. Can you imagine someone loving you enough to write something like this about you?”
Yes, he thinks. If only he WAS a poet. He would write a hundred songs. A thousand. And all of them would talk of her smile and her eyes and the way there is no single thing about her he would change.
But words fail him. They always do.
So he just nods.
“Joel,” she says and moves closer. The bottle of beer now placed on her couch table, her hands find his chest. So warm. So soft. And all he does is stare.
“I know you got my postcards. I know you know how I feel. And sometimes I think you feel the same. I see the way you look at me. I know the dangers you put yourself in to get me those records. I just — you never say anything. So am I making a fool of myself here? Please tell me if I — “
“You’re not.”
Wow, so eloquent.
“I’m not?”
Her voice sounds so small. So unsure. He hates that he’s the one who put the uncertainty there. Be a better man, Joel! Be a good man for once!
But all he does is stare. Words fail him. Again. again. again.
“Then can I — can I do this?”
(Y/N)’s gaze falls to his lips then back up to his eyes. She is so close. He can feel her warm breath on his skin. Can smell the scent of her shampoo. Notices the tremble of her fingers as her hands rest on his chest.
And he wants to kiss her. Every version of him that ever was and ever will be wants to kiss her. But all he does is stare.
All he does is stare and pull away.
And it breaks his heart to see hers break in that moment.
“I uh — oh I’m sorry Joel.”
Tears gather in her eyes, fill them with sorrow, fill his heart with rage. He can’t do anything right, can he? Everyone he’s ever loved, he’s disappointed. But how can he let himself love her, how can he let her love him, when he is so broken? When all he does is break things? Taint them with this infinite sadness that lives and grows inside his bones?
“It’s not you.”
“Oh please, Joel. I made a fool of myself already. Don’t make it worse.”
“I ain’t trying to. It just ain’t you. It’s all me. It’s always been me”
His palms are sweaty and he feels like someone has reached into his ribcage, cracked every rib on the way to his heart, and ripped it out with bare hands. Snapping veins and arteries and all.
“I want you. I want this but I can’t have it. You think I’m a good man but the truth is, I am not. I do bad things all the time, over and over again and time and life have made me so numb to it. But you, you are so good. You deserve someone better. Someone whole.”
It’s like once he’s started it all comes flowing out like a fucking waterfall. All his fears and insecurities and pain. It’s all there for her to be disgusted by. Because god knows there is no way she won’t be. He is. All the time.
“I have not been the same since this all started. Since Sarah — since she died. I live with this immense grief. It surrounds me. It IS me. All of me. And I so desperately want to claw my way out of it. Rip it apart and leave it behind. But at the same time, I want to bury myself in it. Because what if I do leave it behind and I start to forget? Her and all that she was? How is it fair that I have to remember her far longer than I got to know her? So if I get better, if I become the man I need to be to be worthy of your love, am I still gonna be the man she knew? Can I still remember? Because that is all I have. And that is not a burden I can put on you. Not you and not Ellie.”
Joel takes a breath then another but it does little to calm him down.
“You two mean everything to me and I am sorry I am bad at showing it. That I can’t say it. I need you to know, it’s all me that’s the problem. It was never you. I’m sorry.”
He doesn’t wait for her to say anything. He doesn’t think he has the heart to hear a reply anyway. It’s like he just ripped himself open and spilled all his guts, his heart, his lungs, and all his inside out on her living room floor.
If he was any better of a man he’d pick them up and try to rearrange them.
But he is not a good man. Maybe he never was.
“There was something for you in the mailbox” Ellie exclaims and slumps down on the couch next to him. “I was this close to opening it but I didn’t want to make you even more grumpy than you already are.”
“I’m not grumpy”
He has to admit, the tone in which he said those words does not do much to counter her point. Ellie knows too, judging by the way she raises her eyebrow “Sure, you’re not.”
She drops a sunflower yellow envelope on his lap. ‘Joel’, it says in that swirly handwriting he’s become so familiar with.
It’s been a few weeks since he’s seen (Y/N). Since he spilled all his sorrows and worries to her and then ran. And, surprisingly, Jackson makes it very easy for someone to avoid another person if you only try hard enough.
Maybe Ellie has a point, maybe he has been exceptionally grumpy lately. No correlation to any recent events though. Absolutely zero.
“Sooo are you gonna open it?”
Ellie looks at him with curiosity and that little spark of mischief as if she knows something he doesn’t.
“Not with you watching over my shoulder, I ain’t.”
“Why?”
“Cause it’s none of your business.”
“Excuse me? I have to live with your grumpy ass because you guys can’t get your shit straight. I think it very much is my business.”
“Jesus, Ellie. Language!"
“Sorry,” she says and gives him that pseudo-sheepish look he’s grown familiar with. “You guys need to get your stuff straight.”
He used to scold her for it but really, he isn’t one to talk.
“Anywayyyyy, I’ll go stay at Dina’s tonight … just in case you decide to go over and apologize for whatever it is you did and you guys finally sort it out and need some privacy later.”
“Why do you think I did something?”
And there it is again that sassy eyebrow raise. The same one he’s seen on Sarah so many times before. It truly is a woman’s world and he’s but a fool living in it. And they let no opportunity pass to remind him of just that.
They are also absolutely right.
“My lawyer advised me not to answer that question. Anyway, be nice. Have fun. Byyyye”
Her voice trails off as she grabs her bag and rushes outside leaving Joel alone in this big empty house with nothing but his demons and this mysterious envelope.
Carefully he opens the seal and shakes out the contents. A postcard, a photo, and a — cassette tape?
His eyes find the photo first. It’s a polaroid of him and Ellie and (Y/N). All 3 of them smiling, yes even him. He remembers that day back last summer. It was one of those warm but not yet hot days. (Y/N) was wearing that agonizingly beautiful red sundress. The one that made his heart beat twice as fast. She brought over a whole basket full of cherries from the tree in her garden. A pie too. And that damn Polaroid camera.
Of course, Ellie was enamored by it, wasted almost the whole damn film.
“Come on Joel, let's take a picture together,” she had called out to him and pulled him to sit down next to her and (Y/N) on the blanket they had placed on the lawn.
“I’m not a picture guy,” he had grumbled, “ ain’t nobody want to see my old mug.”
“Oh shut up. Joel, you are so handsome, don’t even pretend like you don’t know that.”
It was the first time (Y/N) had ever called him handsome. It was hard for him to believe it then, hell it still is. But she has done it a lot more since then. Calls him handsome and gorgeous and pretty all the time. At first, he thought she was just humoring him but slowly but surely it dawned on him that she meant it. Means it still.
“We don’t know how many good sunny days we have left. Ain’t no shame in trying to remember this one, right?”
Her eyes held so much honesty then. Vulnerability too. And gratefulness for all they had then after all they had lost. It made him smile then and it makes him smile now.
The Postcard is next, big bold letters spell out TEXAS and in the corner, there’s a drawing of the Texas State Capitol in Austin.
When he turns the Postcard over, there it is again, that swirly writing he’s grown to love so much.

“Joel, the ‘Postcards from around the world’ book I got from the library didn’t have an Austin one but it did have a Texas one so that’ll have to do. I’m not even sure if you're going to read this. I hope you do because you didn't give me a chance to say my part when you stormed off & I think I deserve that.
You're not the man you were in Austin, you lived through the worst thing imaginable and it changed you. But you are not just your pain. It is part of you but it doesn't define you. I know you see all the bad but none of the good but believe me I see it! Ellie does! You are your pain but you are also the smile on Ellie's face when you bring her a new comic or teach her a song. You're the guitar chords echoing through the air on a warm spring afternoon. You are those fluttery feelings in my heart whenever you look at me.
Joel Miller, I understand if you don't want to be with me but if it's only because you don't think you're good enough then I think that's a choice I get to make. Taking that from me is a dick move.
You said you're bad at showing love but you're not. You showed me through all those records. Through all those songs. Now let me love you back.”
Joel can’t quite name the feeling spreading through him. It’s both foreign and familiar at the same time. Like an old friend. A hazy memory. Pictures blurred and dulled by time and age.
Maybe he was wrong, and he hates admitting that. Maybe he ain’t a good man but maybe that is hers to decide. Maybe. Maybe. Maybe.
He takes the cassette tape in his hand and squints his eyes at the tiny writing on the label. God, he really is getting old. Those eyes ain’t what they used to be.
God only knows - The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
You’re my best friend - Queen - A Night at the Opera
Just Like Heaven - The Cure - Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (you should!)
In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel - So
Time After Time - Cyndi Lauper - She’s so unusual
Your Song - Elton John - Elton John
Can’t Help Falling in Love - Elvis - Blue Hawaii
Wonderful Tonight - Eric Clapton - Slowhand
The Book of Love - The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs (!!!! LOVE SONGS!!!)
Just The Way You Are - Billy Joel - The Stranger
"You gave me all these records with all these songs and all these words to tell me you love me and I’m not sure you even knew.”
And she’s right. He got her those records because he knew they’d make her smile. Because that smile means everything to him whether he wants to admit it or not. He got those records to show her that even when he’s gone on a run, she’s always on his mind. He believed it to be a curse, a ghost haunting him for all his past mistakes and taunting him with what he shall never have.
But maybe it’s not a curse.
Maybe it’s a blessing. A sweet song to remind him that someone back home is waiting. A gentle reminder that life can and will go on and good things can come from immense tragedy. And moving on doesn’t mean forgetting, in fact, it means remembering. Remembering the bad and believing that there can and will be good and that it’s worth it to go on. Even if you are a different you. Not worse or better, just changed. And that you deserve love. And kindness. And warmth.
Joel drops the envelope and its contents on the table and grabs his thick winter jacket as he rushes outside. The cold feels only half as bad as it nips at his skin, he barely notices. There is a fire inside him now, burning away all the doubts and hesitation.
He’s back at her door, only this time he doesn’t wait to knock. He’s spent so much time denying himself the one thing he wants that he can’t lose just one second more. The rapping of his knuckles against her door echoes through the winter day. Oh, how he can’t wait for the spring and the summer and her in that gorgeous dress.
“Joel?”
Back before — everything, Joel remembers a movie night with Sarah. She got to choose and despite being an avid fan of trashy action and horror movies, that time she chose a romantic comedy. All things considered, Joel can admit that when Harry met Sally wasn’t the worst choice but he still would’ve preferred Star Wars or Terminator.
He does remember the ending though, the grand finale. He remembers Sarah trying to wipe away tears without him noticing. And he remembers Billy Crystal’s words “When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
Back then he thought it was some silly, cheesy movie speak. No one feels that way, right? It’s grandiose and kitschy for the sake of movie magic.
But no, he’s sure now, that one is true. Because it’s how he feels.
“I love you!”
That confession should come with ribbons and flowers and fireworks but it doesn’t. It comes with honesty and that is all that matters. It comes from the heart.
“Huh?”
“I got your postcard. The photo too and the tape. And I love you.”
“I know. Took you long enough to figure it out.”
“I’m sorry. I — I still believe that I am not a good man and that you deserve better. But it would be selfish to punish you for my own insecurities. I love you and I want to let you love me. If you still want to, that is.”
“Joel Miller?”
“Yeah?”
“Please just fucking kiss me.”
Joel remembers a lot of kisses in his lifetime. Some rushed, some clumsy. Quick kisses in secret. Long drawn-out smooches in smokey bars. Loving, fast, aggressive, and soft.
This one is different, as cheesy as it sounds.
This kiss makes him feel like all he’s ever been and all he ever will be can live in peace with one another. This kiss makes him feel like none of it matters as long as he has her.
She tastes like peppermint and sunshine and he’s sure he’ll never get enough of her. The feeling of her skin against his as he gently cradles her face in his hand. The soft movements on her chest as she breathes. The twitch of her lips as she smiles into the kiss.
For the first time in his life, Joel is sure that a kiss is more than a kiss. It’s a healing hand on a shattered heart. It’s a new path to a new future. It’s sunshine melting the ice from his bones.
It’s a promise to try every day and to be better and to be enough. ---

AGSZC Adopt an Emotional Support Cat for Sephiroth
From the @strayheartless archives <3
Thanks @heraldofcrow and @altocat for the grammar help!
---------------------------------
It doesn’t go as planned.
They go to the shelter to try to find a kitten, but Sephiroth finds something even better: a feral momma cat with a single living kitten because all her other babies died. He and she stare at each other for a solid 15 minutes through the bars, until AGZC find them.
Genesis: THERE you are. Sephiroth, the adoptable kittens are this way.
Sephiroth: This one.
Zack: Oh, sorry bud, this one says the kitten is too young to leave his mother.
Sephiroth: No, this cat. The kitten can come too. *has not broken eye contact yet*
Angeal: Sweetheart, this says she’s feral and not up for adoption, and neither is her kitten. Come on, let’s go look at the ones that are available, ok?
Sephiroth: This one.
Cloud: *Looks at Seph. Looks at the cat. Looks at the kitten. Looks at Seph.* This one.
Angeal, Genesis, and Zack can all be stubborn, but they are faced with the immovable object that is Sephiroth with a fixation and the unstoppable force that is Cloud protecting someone. They convince the shelter staff they can take care of both the mother and the baby. Yes, even though she’s feral. Yes, they know they can’t be separated. Yes, they will handle medicating the feral cat.
—
Momma cat immediately adopts Sephiroth as a second kitten. Then Cloud as her third. The first kitten grows up and is weaned and becomes Zack’s dog-cat. He’s friendly and cuddly and likes to play fetch, and his momma likes him, but knows he’s going to be ok on his own. Not her other kittens though. They clearly still need her.
She comes and yowls at Genesis and Angeal when Seph and Cloud need something she can't get them. She yowls at Genesis to go hunting with her to provide for the babies, and at Angeal to figure out what's wrong when they won't eat the nice mice she brings them.
She accepts Zack as a puppy, disciplines him, and comforts him when needed, but her attention belongs to her tall baby and her baby birb first.
Her new sons are idiots, but they’re HER idiots.
Sephiroth calls her “Mother Cat”. Cloud calls her “Cat”. Genesis insists she needs a REAL name (it’s only decent), and writes down "Serafina" on the vet papers. Sephiroth falls in love with him all over again.
If either Sephiroth or Cloud starts hyperventilating, she comes and sits on her boy and purrs until he calms down. If they ignore important things like feeding time or petting-the-cat time, she starts kneading her paws. If they still ignore her, she brings out the claws. She’s not shy about making sure they take care of her and then themselves.
She nips Zack when one of her boys is overstimulated and he's too loud.
She hisses nonstop at the vacuum and stands between it and her babies until they take her to another apartment, at which point she bathes them until they (and she) calm down.
Serafina: YOWL.
Angeal: Hi Serafina. Is one of them being an idiot?
Serafina: YOWL. *walks to the dining table*
Sephiroth: *hunched over a pile of manuscripts, hair a mess, muttering*
Serafina: YOWL.
Angeal: Seph, honey, have you been up all night again?
Sephiroth: …it’s…morning? Wh- *voice cracks* -at day?
Angeal: Wednesday.
Sephiroth: Oh *cough* just one night then.
Angeal: And you haven’t had water since…? Actually, don’t answer that. Clean up your papers, you need to eat, hydrate, and sleep. No, no arguing. Serafina is worried, you need to reassure her.
Sephiroth: Oh! Of course.
—--
Serafina: YOWL.
Genesis: Yes, my Lady Serafina?
Serafina: YOWL. *leads him to the front door, where Cloud is swaying and trying to put on his boots*
Genesis: Cloud Strife, when was the last time you ate?
Cloud: h-Huh? Gen? When did you get here?
Genesis: Eat. When.
Cloud: ummmmm…breakfast?
Genesis: Yesterday?
Cloud: ……maybe?
Genesis: Sit down before you fall down. You know mako enhancements require more calories. No, stay there and I’ll get you a shake and a bar. Yes, I know you have work. You won’t be any use passed out or dead. Now thank your second mother for saving your life. *stomps off huffily*

s3 episode 21 "avatar" thoughts
a fantastic episode yesterday, and… a SKINNER episode today?!?! what kind of journey are we in for?!!!
LITTLE DID I KNOW!!! for i simply had no idea that a skinner episode is EXACTLY what i needed!!! it is the thing i did not order but that hit the spot precisely!!! it was a thing i couldn’t predict!!!
but who would have thought it? a glimpse into the life of such a secretive man… and a beautiful one, at that!! wow!! i’m emotional over WALTER SKINNER! how unexpected, but also inevitable….
let us begin this journey, which went in so many directions
let us read this episode description. skinner, a murderer…. hmm. it’s not really adding up to me... in this context, at least. has he killed people? yes, definitely. but a random person? seems sloppy. seems weird. seems that someone is framing him…
we open with our friend walter.
IS SKINNER GETTING A DIVORCE?????
this is not how i expected the episode to start!
oh, he won’t sign the papers. he says he’ll do it tomorrow. skinner is SAD :( he’s putting his coat on and leaving!!!!! he does not want to get divorced it seems.
wait, an emotional skinner like two minutes in……. woah. we’re in for a rollercoaster here, i can tell (author's note: op was correct)
noooo, sad skinner at a bar. someone sits next to him. this woman is pretty and sits next to him to escape a guy who wouldn’t stop talking to her. a gentleman!
she asks if being alone bothers him and OH! cutscene to sex. well. this escalated quickly.
PAUSE. is this the first sex scene in this show??? and it’s SKINNER??? if you would have told me that fact a few months ago when i started this show, i would have laughed at you…
omg yeah... i think it is the first on-camera sex scene in this show?? in the past there hasn’t been much (thinking of 3, which is an episode i purposely choose to forget except for right now, and i am ONLY thinking of it to remember how the precedent was established) and they just cut to waking up the next morning. but no, not here. here we get the full show.
well! he seems to be having fun, at least.
OH??? until an old lady is on top of him and screaming?
fun has been cancelled.
that seems to have been a terrible nightmare. but what is not a nightmare is that the woman next to him is DEAD!!!
huh???
my guess…. a slow acting poison??
poor skinner…… he literally cannot catch a break.
oh my goodness, how are our agents going to react to this news….? i would be so embarrassed if my employees knew who i was hooking up with……. and also that she died…..
mulder at da scene. he wants to talk to skinner but he isn’t allowed to talk to him!!!
his phone rings and scully is driving in absolute POURING RAIN and idk why it made me laugh. she was like in a damn flood and flooring it to get where she needed to be lmaoooo
skinner says not to get involved. yeah okay. unstoppable force (mulder on a quest for answers) meet immovable object (skinner)
OH! so it was NOT poison that killed her, and actually her neck was broken. so i guess i didn’t see that. which is probably good because i would have gagged.
this detective is being a jerk to mulder. saying that skinner is suspicious for not taking a lie detector test as if a lie detector test can prove a damn thing (hint: it cannot!) but mulder still gives him his card so they can call and chat
LMAOOOO he was on the phone with scully for all of that exchange with the detective, and she is STILL just trying to get through what looks like a hurricane!!! but she is on her way!!!! he says let’s go look at the body
still at the crime scene, mulder sees the body’s outline and sighs deeply, realizing his colleague is in trouble
scully is narrating the autopsy into her little voice recorder thing, and it always makes me think she’s vlogging, but i digress. she says the victim’s spine was crushed, and only skinner’s prints were on the body.
mulder makes a stupid remark about “at least they were having safe sex” because really, what DO you say when your boss is a murder suspect, and the body is right in front of you? well! many of us will never have to answer this question. funny how he needs to have a Quip to cope, though. don't think i haven't noticed.
her name was carina, and she was a legal secretary who was fired for working as an escort. they truly hate to see a woman get her side hustle on.
scully looks so sad and confused at all of this, but turns the light out and the body’s face is glowing in the dark around the mouth!!! so she pulls out her recorder and makes note of that. it’s like if you split the juice in a glow stick on there. so maybe there WAS poison afoot?!
(author's note: literally no poison at all in this ep idk i was just really convinced there would be... it is important i also include my predictions that flop so you know i have journalistic integrity)
mulder and scully at someone’s door. the person who answers says lorraine is busy, and he says “busy or not, we need to speak with her” and barges in and AGAIN. the way these two just enter a room so forcefully always makes me lose my mind. someone please make a youtube complication of this someday. they are NOT vampires they do not need to be invited in 😭
lorraine, the head of the escort agency, wants to do their questioning later and they break the news carina is dead. she does not want to tell them who hired her, for it goes against their practice. but mulder is ANGRY and gets her to confess that it was, in fact, skinner.
the agents are walking out, asking what was he thinking, and i am wondering the same thing!! she says they can’t ignore the evidence, but mulder is refusing to believe that skinner could be responsible. oh mulder, your faith in those you love really is admirable.
she brings up that they really don’t know much about skinner, but he says that we know he’s risked a lot for us, and that they owe it to him to find the truth. another case of both things being true, which happens often with these two.
oooo this is juicy, i’m INVESTED!!!
conveniently timed cell phone call! skinner has been released. mulder runs to go get him and skinner says it doesn’t concern him, but mulder says of course it does, and damn, i’m just now realizing how attached to skinner mulder must be, how he sounds like a scared little kid hoping against hope he’s innocent, because the people you love can’t do bad things, right? AUGHHHHH how mulder must look for safety in all the places he didn’t get it growing up. i’m gonna be sick. of course it concerns us! <- yeah. making note to analyze this in depth later because it felt like piercing me through the heart.
skinner is gagged by their revelation that carina was a sex worker, which means something is afoot here, because he was supposed to be the one that hired her...
but when he looks behind them, he sees that creepy old woman again!!! omg i had forgotten about her!!!! she’s in a bright red rain jacket.
and he runs into traffic after her (he does get hit by a car but it's the least of his worries) but when he goes to get her… it’s someone else?? with brown hair and blue eyes and not a creepy old lady at all. it’s his WIFE!!!!! WIFE REVEAL!!!!! 🎊
so the agents and sharon skinner are chatting. scully wants to know if he’s always been so private. “he lives under this misguided notion that silence is strength” is what his wife has to say, which is both poignant and read him for filth, sharon. so that is why they separated, and have been for about 8 months.
oh! mulder was one of the few people skinner ever mentioned from work!!! she knows he respects him, so she asks him if he really killed that woman. mulder says he doesn’t think skinner did it, but they have to go now.
some guy named special agent bonnecaze is at skinner’s desk. and the agents are wanted at a hearing for skinner’s ability to keep his job!!! this bonnecaze says they’re not allowed to go sleuthing about. mulder is very very angry.
(what separates a special agent from a regular agent? this is probably a simple internet search, but isn't it more fun to post your thoughts? google says pretty much everyone at the federal level involved in crime investigation is a special agent. so if they're ALL special agents it can't be that special)
back to the office, where mulder is chomping on his pen, and skinner won’t answer his phone. scully notes that he is “doing everything he shouldn’t be doing” which is probably on purpose, RIGHT?? RIGHT?!
and scully looks so beautiful…. she’s concerned about skinner's state of mind, and what else he might be capable of. mulder seems frustrated that she would suspect him, but she explains that genuinely she IS giving him the benefit of the doubt, in the sort of tone you use when you are deeply apologizing to someone, hand on her chest. she can clearly see how attached mulder is to this whole situation. an empath...
scully thinks that maybe something else is going on… she’s playing a video of a man who had REM sleep behavior disorder and relived getting hit by a train each night until he broke his wife’s arm. she is in doctor mode talking about sleep related stuff. and the clinic that film came from WAS WHERE SKINNER HAD BEEN RECEIVING TREATMENT FOR THE PAST 3 MONTHS!!! gasp!! for the same condition!
so he sees an old woman attacking him in his sleep, and maybe he had attacked carina thinking it was her. scully is playing with her necklace as this theory is proposed.
mulder is like, yes i have heard of something like this, a succubus. and he puts his pen in his mouth and grabs a big book off the shelf!!! wow i love that he has a book mentioning medieval spirits in his office :,) maybe need to get one of those for mine.
oh! and his book claims there can be residue left behind… like the stuff she found… scully is pulling a "mulder, you're never gonna believe this" mentally
back to the body. but now her mouth isn’t glowing in the dark! but she had taken a sample… and when sent to the lab for analysis, they found nothing!!!
mulder asks if she is SURE she saw something, and she is like yeah i wouldn’t make that up?? so new theory: skinner is running from all of this because he’s afraid.
skinner is sipping something strong and someone knocks at his door. it’s sharon in a big red raincoat! he didn’t get her calls because he unplugged his phone……. says he hasn't been sleeping....
this must be where he lives now since they separated, but he hasn’t unpacked at all. she wants to make sure he’s okay! but he’s pulling the you’re my ex card. and she says, well i only initiated the divorce because YOU were too scared to do it yourself, and he says “fair enough” <- OOOOO again sharon read him for filth. still, i do not enjoy seeing him so sad.
she wants him to let his walls down, but she knows he will never let her comfort him. so she says to take care of himself and leaves :(
he pulls out their wedding day photo and AWW they’re so young :(((((
AND HE FALLS ASLEEP HOLDING IT. STOP, AM I GOING TO CRY OVER A MAN NAMED WALTER?????????
sleepy time interrupted by screaming. it’s the old lady in the red rain coat just absolutely letting it out, and then she leaves. but there is a REAL knock at the door, and it’s the detective!!!
NO! he says sharon was in an accident!! WHAT IS GOING ON??? skinner’s terrified… and they want the keys to his car…. HE WAS SLEEPING ON THE COUCH!!! HE DID NOT DO THAT SHIT!!!
so he is at the police station and mulder is also here, reporting that sharon is in surgery. but he says they’re building a case against him!!!
mulder clarifies he doesn’t think that skinner did it, but scully doesn’t understand why he isn’t trying to defend himself. and mulder’s doing the angry man thing where he puts his hands on his hips and pushes his jacket back and hnhbbbbhmmmmmmppllhghgh
nooooo skinner :( he’s so angry :( he doesn’t know what is going on or what to believe :(
so mulder asks about the old woman- which they know about from reading his files- and yells that if he doesn’t start trusting someone, he doesn’t stand a chance. whew! he has had enough of this silence!!!
(oh my phone is gonna die hold on. break to procure a charger. charger secured. CHARGER ISN’T WORKING?? omg… now it is… crisis averted)
so skinner started seeing her “again” a few months ago… he’s talking about what happened to him in vietnam, how he was a sole survivor of an ambush. he says he got through the experience by numbing himself with whatever he could, and he “inhaled”, so he assumed she was another hallucination. and she watched him watch himself die, but she carried him back away from the light.
mulder proposes she was trying to protect him them and still is now. but he doesn’t know from what!! he is so sad!!
GASP!!! CUTSCENE TO CANCER MAN WATCHING THIS ALL GO DOWN?????
ANOTHER EVIL CIG MAN PLOT?!?!?
so skinner’s car matches the damage on sharon’s car, and allegedly the hood of his car was still warm when the detectives got to his house and brought him in for questioning. mulder asks for a flashlight and gets in the car despite the hearing being in a half hour. oh! he’s slicing out the air bag?
bringing the air bag to the lab guy, who can turn the air bag into a facial pattern of whoever it crashed into. is this a thing that can happen??? big if true.
scully at the hearing. mulder not there!! so they just begin.
she’s trying to explain the mouth glow situation, and special agent bonnecaze basically accuses her of hiding stuff; she says she’s reluctant to speak for mulder, but he thought it came from a “visitation”. she has no other explanation!
(wow, i love that she admits she has no idea here. you can tell who is intelligent by seeing who is willing to admit to not having all of the answers. it's a small thing but it says a lot about her character <3)
they ask her if she believes in paranormal phenomena, and she dodges the question by saying she views everything “through the lens of science”. a measured response. but they’re asking if skinner has become “enchanted by agent mulder’s notions” HUH?? what da hell does that mean? anyway, she says no.
bonnecaze accuses her of protecting skinner by exaggerating the unexplained elements of the case, which she ENTIRELY refutes. and when she tries to say that she is NOT finished, they say she is. OHHH the bastards.
scully calls mulder but he’s right behind her lololol. anyway, it’s no laughing matter that skinner is OUT OF A JOB. she says he would have had a better chance against a firing squad. and they used the x files to justify getting rid of him!! he thinks "they’re" doing it to hurt the x files, whoever they may be!!! (presumably cig man and his UN alien club??)
so mulder has a graph that looks like pixel art of whoever stole skinner's car that night and his sharon. "they" couldn’t try to kill him again, so a set up would be less obvious. it makes sense.
i think the lab guy’s name is danny?? well they can’t figure out who thief is, who must have also been the fellow who hired carina.
oh no! now they’re at the scene of another crime. it’s the lady who runs the escort agency! she jumped off a building :( or it was staged to look like that
but they see the woman who answered the door when they visited her place of work!!! her name is judy. and she says that the pixel art man who hired carina said no one would get hurt!!!! so this dude stole skinner’s card!!!
(is it krycek. i can’t stand him any longer!)
due to lorraine being dead, she can’t talk with this mystery client, so they ask judy to set up a meeting with him, to pretend she needs money to get out of town. she calls some unnamed men on the phone to arrange this meeting.
and the men on the phone are not krycek, but they ARE watching this all go down from their car!!!!!! WHO ARE THESE FREAKS!!!!
skinner is going to see sharon. and she can’t hear him but he’s telling her he’s not signing the divorce papers :( he says he can’t tell her the terrible things he has seen…. and that she was what got him through each day, knowing he had a reason to wake up :( NOOOOO
and as he smooches her forehead her monitor starts going off!!!!!!! but then he sees her turn into the scary old woman!!!!!! who looks out at him and beckons. so he goes back in and grabs the hand of the old woman but it’s actually his wife again!!!!!!! she says to listen to her. WHAT IS IT!!! what does she KNOW!!!
mulder at the bar where they planned the set up. sipping something and looking good, yeah yeah. the men who set this whole thing up are arriving.
while scully and judy are upstairs and oh my god scully. she is so beautiful. both of these bastards are so utterly beautiful.
sighs wistfully…….
well, whoever it is they’re waiting on isn’t showing up. but there’s a movement at the door! and she says mulder, get up here right now!!!
scully with her gun out in the hotel room……. the suspense…….. she finds judy in the bathroom but SOMEONE ELSE IS BEHIND HER!!!
it’s the guy from before, who was on the phone with judy!! and he’s firing his gun!! scully is on the ground but she seems unhurt beyond the head slamming??
WAIT! it isn’t that scary phone guy who fired his gun!! it was SKINNER!!! who shot whoever set this whole operation up!!!
SKINNER TELEPORTATION TO THE SCENE....
judy is crying and scully is on the floor still, but it seems all is well in the world?
back to skinner’s office!!! which is rightfully his office again!!!
they bring him the report on the case, and there are lots of unanswered questions, including who that dude who was shot was. there is no identity whatsoever.
OH! mulder points out that there is no explanation as to why skinner was at the hotel last night, so please fill out that line yourself. which he says he can’t do, because it has no place in a report.
so mulder asks skinner to tell him what happened, off the record, and scully is waiting with bated breath… and he says he has some catching up to do. mulder kind of looks like someone just kicked him but he walks away :(
(oh mulder, funny how you're trying to get him to break these walls down, but you have some pretty damn solid walls of your own. now you know how it must feel... i jest, but it is so sad to see him unable to connect to skinner in the way he wants to. nevertheless, this is a happy ending)
skinner puts his wedding ring back on!!! and gets back to work!!!!!!!!!!!
WHAT!!!!!!!
omg. so much to unpack here. i kind of assumed we would never get any skinner lore beyond his vietnam story, so this was a deeply welcome surprise. earlier i was very suspicious of him- you may recall some posts where i repeatedly say things along the lines of "i don't trust this guy"- but you can see how the narrative is shifting, how now we are supposed to trust him after he has done so much for scully and mulder. and it is very interesting to see how he operates, how he tries to put on that strong facade, and how it needs to crumble for him to move forward.
so, i think that there are two things at play here: one, someone who was trying to frame skinner for the murder and the attempted killing of his wife, and two, the whole situation with the scary old lady. we know the scary old lady was the one he saw in vietnam, and the one he attributes to saving his life, so it makes sense to think that some sort of guardian angel spirit would show up to him as an attempt to make him realize that he was losing what really mattered to him (sharon) due to his own fear. so even though she is scary looking, she led him to sharon, and appeared when he was with another woman as if to scare sense into him.
now, what is LESS clear is who did the killing! we know his prints were found on her, but did they check everything? how does that even work? maybe he strangled her in his sleep on accident, but given that someone else paid her to be there that evening, it would make more sense that someone else did it, no? except they said there was no sign of any intruders... so perhaps whoever it was who set that whole scenario up knew enough about him to know that was a possibility. in that case, they must have access to his medical records and know about his visions.....
must be the work of the cig man and his cronies.
so, if you accidentally kill someone in your sleep... how do you proceed from there?
well, i guess it doesn't matter, because he got his job back.
interesting to explore the concept of a guardian angel sort of creature as a being of terror, to shock you out of the mistakes you make that ruin your life. and it doesn't explain the glowy mouth or succubus allegations, but hey, there's always some stuff that doesn't entirely add up!
overall, i thought this was a really great episode. it was very different from the last one, but the tone shift didn't feel drastic and uncomfortable. i'm really interested in how mulder handled this whole thing, how he clearly has these projections for what he wants skinner to be and how he wants him to act, as if he's idolizing him. i think that is very fascinating and i will be mentally chewing on that for a while. and scully being willing to admit what she does not know, and observe what she cannot explain... mmm, it's just delicious to me.
so huh! i'm pleased! shoutout to walter, sharon, and the sleep demon that saved their marriage
#lots of interesting stuff here and although the mystery beyond exactly what went down may not be solved#i am glad it had a nice ending tied up with a bow#sure mulder was sad he didn't open up but that was a bit of a stretch goal anyway and there is still plenty of time for more bonding!#still laughing at scully driving in that damn hurricane lmao#ahhh these agents. how they have grown to be a part of me.#juni's x files liveblog#3x21#the x files#txf

fanfic • agere • regressors Bruce Wayne and J'onn J'onzz, Caregiver Diana Prince • AO3
My baby J'onn fic is finally done! First time in a while I've finished a fic. I hope y'all enjoy!
J’onn needed a break. With his new duties on the watchtower, he was in a constant state of stress. Was he dispatching people to the correct assignments? Were more needed? Should he be recruiting? Every moment not at the console was a second wasted where he could be helping. But after a few days of no sleep, there came an intervention. Bruce and Diana had managed to get him to a private room to talk.
“J’onn, please listen to what we’re saying. You need to go on leave.”
“I won’t hear it, Diana. I go where I am needed.”
“You’ve been running yourself into the ground. If you don’t find a way to cope with your stress you could be put out of commission,” Bruce’s voice was gentle but stern.
J’onn looked at the ground like a scolded child. He rubbed his temples in frustration, he knew Bruce and Diana weren’t going to let up. Of course the two most stubborn members of the league were tasked to bring him to his senses. Unstoppable force, meet immovable object.
“Earth is my home now, I need to protect it. I won’t let what happened to Mars happen again,” J’onn’s voice sounded strained, scared. He hung his head. Diana and Bruce sat on either side of J’onn, both instinctually touching him. Before J’onn could protest, emotion washed over him. Worry, resolve, love. He wasn’t intentionally reading their minds but the contact transferred underlying waves of emotion. He tried to avoid touching others for that reason - it was too much, too intimate, but with his friends… it wasn’t unwelcome. He let out a deep sigh. Feeling how worried his friends were broke his stubborn will. He knew it was time to relent.
“Alright. I will take a few days off.”
Diana smiled her perfect smile. Bruce looked pleased in his own private way. However - J’onn could sense there was something unsaid. Diana’s hand reached behind his back and laid over Bruce’s, seemingly encouraging him.
“That’s wonderful, J’onn. Thank you. Now, Bruce has something he’d like to share with you.”
Bruce looked away, rubbing his neck. Bashful was not a common look for the dark knight. After a moment, he spoke.
“I… wanted to talk to you about a coping mechanism you might find helpful.”
Bruce looked at Diana for comfort, who squeezed his hand in return. This was difficult for him.
“You are aware of my … regression, yes?”
J’onn was. He had witnessed it one time, briefly. After a particularly tough mission Bruce was critically injured. He pleaded with J’onn to bring Alfred to the watchtower, and the two stayed together all night. The next day, Bruce explained why he needed his guardian’s help.
“Yes, I remember.”
Bruce cleared his throat. “Well, it was originally involuntary, but I have found that voluntarily regressing with people I trust has had a positive effect on my overall health.”
Diana chimed in, “Of course, it’s not for everyone, but we thought that the concept may be useful to you,” she took J’onn’s hand, “You take care of everyone in the league, it might be nice to have someone take care of you for a change.”
J'onn took a moment to think it over. He did quite enjoy spending time with his friends, and he didn't get the opportunity often. Maybe participating in this earthly activity would help him understand them more.
"I… will try."
Diana smiled even wider, before wrapping Bruce and J'onn in a hug.
"I promise, you're in excellent hands!"
•
The next day, J’onn, Diana, and Bruce planned to meet up at the watchtower. The watchtower had become J’onn’s home, and he was most comfortable starting their day there. He walked out of his quarters with a knot in his stomach. J’onn could take down powerful mutants without issue, but social settings were always difficult for him. He was anxious for what was to come, as he didn’t know what to expect. However, as the beam of light rose from the transporter, he felt his worries melt away. Diana and Bruce were in civilian clothing, Diana toting a large duffle bag. Bruce looked cautiously around, fiddling with a loose string on his jacket. J’onn greeted them with open arms.
“My friends, thank you for doing this.”
Diana wrapped him in a hug.
“Of course J’onn, anything you need.”
Diana looked back to Bruce, catching on to his nerves. She reached out and held his hand.
“We should get going,” she said.
The trio went to J’onn’s quarters, secluded from the noise and eyes of the other leaguers. Diana loved being in J’onn’s room, it felt so lived in. Given J’onn lives in the watchtower, his room had been renovated to be more like a studio apartment. An extra large bed in the corner (to accommodate his unmasked form), a kitchenette full of his favorite foods, a seating area, and of course, his cat Double Stuff. He greeted them at the door, purring and rubbing against their legs. Diana adored how J’onn’s eyes lit up as he picked up the huge orange cat.
“Sweet boy, you’ve noticed our guests,”
Bruce gave him a tentative pet, and his purring grew even louder.
“He loves you already,” J’onn smiled.
The three of them took a seat on the large, plush couch in front of the TV.
“I can tell you’re both nervous,” Diana said, “but of course, there’s no need to be. I’m here to take care of you, not to judge. You’re welcome to express yourselves in any way that feels healing to you.”
Her warm voice put both heroes at ease. J’onn looked over to Bruce, who still looked a little uncomfortable. He tugged at the collar of his coat, which was still buttoned. Why didn’t he take it off? Oh. J’onn put the pieces together.
“Bruce, do you need help with your coat?” he asked.
Bruce nodded shyly while J’onn scooched over to help him unbutton.
“I did some research into human developmental stages. I remembered that children of a certain age may not have developed fine motor skills.”
Diana nodded, impressed. “Very good, J’onn.”
J’onn felt warmth bloom in his chest. Very good. His hard work to fit in with human society often went unrecognized - it felt so good to be praised about it. Bruce sighed in relief as J’onn removed his coat.
“So,” Diana began with an excited lilt, “I brought a few of Bruce’s favorite activities. I’ve looked after him a few times before.”
Diana unzipped the duffel bag to unveil a treasure trove of colorful supplies - picture books, crayons, blankets, various toys. J’onn was unfamiliar with most of them. He had never spent an extended period of time with such a young child.
“Is it okay if I move your table J’onn? It’s nice to have an open space for this.”
At J’onn’s nod, Diana picked the table up with ease and set it to the side. Next, she rifled through the duffle bag, taking out a large blanket. After spreading it out in the empty space she scattered a few of the toys - a little toy telephone, a small plastic creature, some things with wheels - J’onn marveled at the unfamiliar objects. Bruce was more than enthused about them, though he tried to conceal his giddy smile. He slightly rocked in place, looking at Diana with bright eyes.
“Go ahead, my love.”
He hopped off the couch and sat on the blanket, immediately going for the little plastic beasts. J’onn cocked his head to the side. Bruce looked up at him.
“J’onn?” He said, in a small voice.
“I am just confused. What is… that?”
Bruce’s face lit up.
“Brachiosaurus!” He smiled.
“A brachiosaurus? Is that an animal? I have never seen one.”
“Dinosaur!” Bruce giggled, holding up the toy.
Diana chimed in. “They are an extinct species, J’onn. They lived on earth thousands of years ago.”
A tinge of sadness tugged at J’onn’s heart. Extinct… The faces of his family and friends flitted across his mind. He stared off into the vast space outside his window.
“J’onn… are you okay?”
J’onn snapped back to reality, and confronted the concerned faces of his friends. Diana put a hand on his, transmitting love, warmth, worry, understanding. She knew exactly what was wrong after what she said. J’onn took a deep breath and steadied himself. He held Diana’s hand, gently conjuring feelings of calm and comfort in her mind. Bruce was not in this loop - he toddled on his knees to J’onn, eyes brimming with tears.
“It is alright, Bruce, it is okay,” J’onn said, holding Bruce.
“I want to know more about these creatures. What do you know about them?”
A small smile returned to Bruce’s face, and he cozied himself into J’onn’s lap.
“This is a Broch-i-o-saurus. They lived in the Jurassic period, ‘n they were herbivores… they lived in North America, that’s where my house is…”
J’onn nodded along, charmed by Bruce’s soft, gentle voice. He stumbled over his words every so often, his brain going too fast for his mouth to keep up with. All the while, Bruce was moving the Brachiosaurus as if it was traveling down J’onn’s arm. He leaned over and grabbed a second dinosaur, this one standing on two legs with small arms.
“Tyran-o-saurus Rex! Rah!”
Bruce held it up to J’onn as if the animal was biting him. J’onn let out an ‘aah!’ and fell to the ground. Bruce continued his dino torment, both creatures attacking J’onn. Diana laughed from the sidelines.
“I’ll save you J’onn,” she smiled, and picked Bruce up by the waist.
Bruce giggled and kicked his legs as the amazon hoisted him into the air, then she gently placed him back on the blanket. J’onn scooched closer to Bruce, picking up and examining the last dinosaur. It had a long head, just like his natural form!
“What is this one Bruce?”
Bruce perked up and looked up at J’onn,
“Parasaurolophus!”
J’onn giggled, “He looks like me!”
Bruce cocked his head. J’onn looked at Diana,
“Do you think my natural form might… frighten him?”
“Of course not, J’onn. He knows you would never harm him,”
After a moment of thought, J’onn let all his muscles relax. He felt his form start to shift, elongate, transform. When he opened his eyes, he had grown by a foot, his arms and legs stretched out. I hope you’re right, Diana, J’onn thought, expecting Bruce to be scared. Instead, he smiled and clapped his hands.
“Big!”
J’onn returned his smile, holding the parasaurolophus next to his head.
“Just like twins,” Diana laughed.
“J’onn, you know you can stay in your natural form. We want you to be comfortable.”
Bruce clapped in agreement.
“Thank you,” J’onn said.
J’onn and Bruce proceeded to play with their dinosaurs, sorting them, stacking them, crashing them together. J’onn felt his self consciousness melt away as he played. As the time flew by, Bruce showed J’onn how each toy worked. Before they knew it it had been hours.
“Would you like a snack, little ones?”
“Snack…” Bruce cooed.
J’onn tried to gather himself to speak, but he found it difficult. His thoughts were soft and scattered.
“Choco?” He compromised with one word.
“Of course,” Diana said, petting his head.
Diana returned with cookies for J’onn and applesauce for Bruce, along with a cup and a bottle. She pulled Bruce onto her lap, resting his head on her chest. She secured a piece of fabric around his neck. J’onn wanted to ask what it was, but he found himself unable to speak. He whined. Then, a thought came to him. He touched Diana’s hand, transmitting an image of the fabric to her mind. She was thrown off for a moment, but quickly adapted.
“It’s called a bib, it keeps Bruce from getting messy.”
J’onn nodded with a smile, content.
“Baba…” Bruce was pawing at the bottle.
“Thirsty, hm?” Diana popped the bottle into his mouth, and Bruce happily drank the milk. J’onn tipped the cup to his mouth, but spilled a little bit down his chin. Diana was quick to wipe his face.
“Maybe I should get you a bib,” Diana smiled.
J’onn thought about it and gave an affirmative nod. Diana placed Bruce in J’onn’s lap for a moment while she fetched a second bib. Soon, she returned and secured it around J’onn’s neck - then she picked up the cup and secured a lid to it.
“Sippy cup,” Diana tapped the cup.
“...sippy,” J’onn repeated.
“Good job!”
J’onn felt that telltale warmth in his chest. He bonked Diana with his head, transmitting happiness, love, appreciation. After a minute of thought, he transmitted a small explanation to both Bruce and Diana. A memory of him on his homeworld, touching his forehead to his loved ones. It was a common form of affection on mars. Bruce bobbed up and down excitedly and fell toward J’onn, bopping him with his forehead.
“Good… job!” J’onn parroted, with great effort.
Soon, all of the snacks were eaten. “All gone!” Diana said, holding up the plates.
“All..gone!” J’onn repeated.
Bruce was softly snoring in Diana’s lap.
“I think it’s about time for a nap,”
J’onn made a confused squeak.
“Na-ap?” He drew out the word.
“It’s a short sleep humans take sometimes. Would you like to join? You don’t really have to sleep, sometimes it’s just nice to be still.”
J’onn nodded, not fully parsing the instructions but willing to participate. He followed his friend’s lead, floating over to the bed and lying down in it. J’onn wasn’t really used to the bed yet, he usually floated while sleeping on Mars. As he lay nestled between Diana and Bruce, he decided - he liked the bed best with his friends in it.

Unstoppable Forces and Immovable Objects- Mingi x Female!Reader
Song Mingi is an incredibly special man & I hope he never forgets it 😤 I love he immensely. Pink Mingi is, frankly, a cornerstone of this year. An icon. A legend. The moment. Also shhhh I took some dorm layout liberties for this 🤫😂
Word Count: 2620 | Idiots to Lovers, Humor | Warnings: only if you're bothered by smooch talk hehe, but one note: 노래방 = noraebang aka what most of us English speakers think of as karaoke 😄

"(y/n)! (y/n)! Watch this!"
"What now?"
Completely ignoring Yeosang's interjection, Mingi continued to call for you, grin of whimsy widening when you made your way over as if he wasn't sure he'd actually see you.
Which he totally would, always, because you had the biggest, fattest crush on him, heart leaping up and hitting a big carnival bell every time Mingi sought your attention. He was the biggest ray of sunshine smiling through just about any cloud in your life.
Shuffling past Hongjoong and Seonghwa's conversation at the sidelines, you made your way back to the bouncy center of the trampoline park you'd gone with the boys to. There stood Mingi with a hand raised, waving as he bounced ever-so-slightly on his heels, the dark netting rippling beneath him.
"Let's see," you tell him with a smile, heart fluttering at his waves and jumps.
"Ok! Get ready!" Steadying himself, Mingi hunkered a bit from his upright stance, run-jumping across three squares of trampoline, hurtling himself up into the air on the fourth toward the giant obstacle pad set a little bit left of center. He did not clear it, sailing right into the side of the firm structure with a small oof.
Smacking his forehead, Yeosang took a few steps away. Yunho joined you in running toward the tall man and his unfortunate collision, asking his friend if he was ok. It looked like he almost nodded, but you met his eyes as he ended up shaking it no instead. Your eyes widened. Had it started hurting?
"Where does it hurt? Do you think you bruised something?"
"Just his ego," Yeosang muttered.
You, of course, did not want to make Mingi feel any worse, choosing not to respond to that. "Do you need help up?"
Mingi nodded, eyes still looking into yours as he held out his hand to you. Face warming, you grabbed it, unable to suppress a smile even as you pulled the big man to his feet again.
"That was really cool, though," you told him, just to see the smile return to his face, "you went really far. I bet the others couldn't get that far."
"No, they couldn't, could they?" Contagious joy indeed came back to Mingi's face. "I'm going to jump so high I finally hit the punching bag they hung! Watch me, (y/n)!"
"I will," you giggle, stepping back and bouncing in place as he goes long for a running start.
~
(POV: Mingi)
"This has to stop before you break anything. Don't you think there's any other way?" Yeosang cajoled, sitting down next to Mingi and handing him a freshly chilled water bottle.
Mingi, for his part, took some of the cool condensation on his hand, running it through his short pink hair to combat the sweat of exertion before frowning in confusion. "What do you mean?"
"These insane attempts to get (y/n)'s attention!"
"Insane attempts?"
"Last week, Mingi, you borrowed my skateboard and proceeded to skin your arm when you fell off the grind rail. You have never skateboarded in your life."
"I wanted her to think I'm cool," the pink-haired man responded with a pout, "she's so beautiful and awesome."
"And notice," Yeosang commented, shaking his head as black hair fell all over, "she has never fallen off a skateboard."
"Well, what do you think I should do?"
"Um, maybe consider confessing to her? Seeing if she likes you too?"
"No way! What if she doesn't even want to be friends anymore?"
"Well, I suppose that's a risk we all take," Yeosang responded, tone softening, "but if you're respectful about it, I'm sure you won't lose her completely."
"That's the last thing I want," Mingi said intensely.
"Yes, of course not, so why don't you just-"
Right then, you happened to saunter by, crossing the sidelines near the center to head to the foam pit, glancing over at the two of them with a faint smile. A gorgeous one. Mingi smiled back, tossing the water bottle his hyung gave him immediately aside and walking after you.
"Hey, (y/n), let's jump in at the same time and see who can climb back out faster!"
That's what you guys did, Mingi diving in facing the side so he could watch with a twinkle in his eye the way you flipped in. Amazing. He managed to get his footing on the way out, scrambling up not too clumsily for once, but when he turned around he saw your hands clutching at the side, floundering a bit.
His heart thudded. "Hey, you helped me earlier. Do you need me to return the favor?"
"Yes, please," you replied with a nod, loosening half your grip to take Mingi's proffered hand.
He yanked you free of the cubic foam menaces in no time, and soon you were standing right in front of him. "Guess you win," you remarked with an amused smirk.
"Yeah, I guess so, but your jump was way cooler."
"I can show you how to do it if you want, but only on one condition."
"What's that, (y/n)?"
"You keep helping me out when I get stuck."
"Of course."
~
(POV: You)
Jump time over, you made your way across the arena to the exit, taking the long way as you, San, and Jongho sprung across every single central trampoline. Giggling, you landed, shuffling over to the locker where the park had you lock up your shoes. When you got there, Yeosang had lowered himself onto the bench by your locker, so you dropped down next to him to lace yourself back up. Out of the peripheries of your vision, you saw him fixing you with a look.
"Really?"
You blinked. "What?"
"Fake falling into the foam pit?" He asked in response, one eyebrow raising.
"You mean the dive?" Pulling your right foot into your shoe, you fixed the dark-haired singer with a look of your own, this one conveying a lack of understanding.
Or so you thought. "No, I mean the way you obviously didn't even try to get out and the little drama performance as you feebly grabbed the sides."
"Hey, I'm not feeble!"
"No, you're just into Mingi, aren't you?"
"Because I had him help me out? In case you haven't noticed, he's pretty tall and strong, and he's so nice I really didn't think he would mind if I-"
"Yeah, you hear yourself, don't you?"
Busted. "Ok, please don't say anything, I mean there's no way he likes me back and I don't want to make things weird, so it's just something I get to live with as you guys' friend."
Yeosang just chuckled, shaking his head. "Oh, man."
"What?"
"Nothing," he grabbed his bag, "just...look, I know Mingi very well, and let me just tell you he'd rather get hit by a bus than make the first move. If you're into him, the best thing you could do is tell him. Very, very directly."
Your mouth fell open. "What? Confess?" Heat bloomed across your face. "It's ok, I don't need to hear him reject me, I know we're just friends, it just...he's just...he's just so..." You trail off with a sigh.
Yeosang just elbows you, rolling his eyes lightly. "Handsome? Dreamy?"
"Shut up," you shoot back in a drawn-out giggle as you make your way to the rest of the group at the lobby, where you surreptitiously popped open the doors on one of the little ice cream coolers, sliding a bar out and taking it up to the desk to purchase. Giving people food, after all, was a flirtation method in your mind. Like hey, hello, please like me, I can feed you. You weren't sure if it worked on Mingi or not, but hey, worth a shot.
You strolled up to him, pulling the strawberry cream bar out from behind your back. "Look what I got you! It matches your hair!"
With that big, bright smile you loved, Mingi pulled an ice cream bar out from behind his back, too. "I got you an ice cream!" He exclaimed, though he trailed off as he glanced at his offering. "Though this one doesn't match your hair."
A smack sound at your back had Mingi starting and you turning around, only to see Yeosang with his face in his hand.
~
(POV: Yeosang)
"This is stupid."
"Oh, you think?" Yeosang, frankly, was over the moon to have someone who sympathized with him, that person being his longtime friend Wooyoung.
Wooyoung who stood at Yeosang's side taking in the very same scene that laid out before them: you and Mingi had jointly chosen a very particular 노래방 song, your favorite romantic movie duet to be exact. You two were gripping your microphones like lifelines, both absolutely belting the song at each other for the bit, key and perfect notes be darned. Your eyes never left each other's except to dart ever-so-slightly down every now and again as you grinningly deafened everyone else, whose rolling eyes you were blind to thanks to that focus on each other. Mingi let his jacket slide down his shoulders as he dropped down to really yell a note, revealing the tank top he was wearing underneath, and boy did your eye contact falter then.
"Uh, yeah," Wooyoung's eyes slid upward so hard they practically disappeared under their lids as he crossed his arms, "My God, I feel like a third wheel. Are they-"
"Deeply convinced they have torturous one-sided crushes? Yes, they are," Yeosang replied, mirroring his friend's posture.
The sputtering that followed was very satisfying to what little bit of Yeosang's sanity remained. "Wh- What? How? Can they not see themselves doing..." Wooyoung extended a black-sleeved arm, palm flat out and pointing incriminatingly at you two, who were now giggling over some dumb mic twirling contest. "That?"
"That's what friends do," Yeosang asked facetiously, falling back against the red plush bench the inactive singers sat on, "right?"
"I mean," Wooyoung commented, hands wringing, "I'd do that with you, but just with a drinking song or something, sheesh."
"And even then I'd contemplate slapping you."
"That's why I love you." Wooyoung slid a little closer to his friend with a teasing grin. "See? That's so easy, why don't Mingi and (y/n) do that?"
"Good luck, they're like an unstoppable force and an immovable object." Yeosang quickly motioned to the duo with a sweep of his open hand, directing Wooyoung's eyes off him and back to the antics, which this time consisted of Mingi trying to coolly toss his microphone and catch it, totally missing and sending it flying to the floor, making the two of you laugh.
"Is that why Mingi was practicing juggling in the dorms?"
"He what?"
"Yeah, one of Seonghwa's legos got knocked over...not a pretty afternoon."
Yeosang ran a hand through his hair with a sigh. "Yeah, we'd practically need to trick them into getting together to stop the carnage."
Suddenly he felt a slap to his shoulder. Starting, he swiveled his head from the Mingi-(y/n) train wreck to meet the devilish eyes of one Jung "Schemes" Wooyoung.
"Well, I think that can be arranged." Leaning in, he whispered a plan to Yeosang, who nodded and shook his hand in agreement. "Alright then! Celebratory song?"
"Sure, why not?" Yeosang replied, rising from the couch and coaxing the thrice-tossed microphones from (y/n) and Mingi. "Anything to stop the showtunes."
"Hey," you pouted, "that's a classic, you know!"
"Yeah!"
"Mingi, my friend, you've never even seen that movie," Wooyoung chuckled, wrapping an arm around his friend, who flushed.
"I can appreciate lyricism, you know."
~
(POV: You)
Yeosang was not letting you breathe. Ever since you admitted to liking his friend back in the trampoline park, he wouldn't stop wiggling his eyebrows at you after you brushed hands with Mingi, elbowing you and making jokes in the kitchen, and now just straight-up playing devil-on-your-shoulder telling you you needed to practice confessing.
"No, I don't," you griped back, "I've already ruined my life enough by even falling for a friend in the first place, I don't need to creep him out, too."
"Sheesh, what do you think you're going to say, that you've got names for all three of your kids or what?"
"Well for starters, how does Song Minseo sound to you?"
Yeosang looked like he was going to puke. "Oh, God."
"That was a joke!" You waved your hands back and forth wildly as if very inexperienced-ly directing a plan landing. "I was kidding!"
"You came up with that way too fast," he said, shaking his head, "but, see, it's hard to get the white picket fence if you never share how you see him, right?"
You crossed your arms. "I guess."
"You had no problem telling me how tall and strong and nice he was," Yeosang pointed out, leading you further down the dorm hall and shooting a brief look into Wooyoung's room before stopping you in his, "just say all that to him instead of me."
Your hands shot up to cover your reddening face. "That would be so embarrassing."
"I mean, he probably already knows he's tall, strong, and nice, so you should be pretty safe with that one."
"I'm not just going to say that, that's, like, basic stuff! I'd tell him how happy he makes me just by being happy himself, how he's pretty much a ray of pure sunshine and I love the way he calls my name and I can't imagine being half as comfortable with anyone else as I am with him. He has eyes, he can tell he's hot or whatever."
Yeosang got an absolutely catlike smile on his face. "And who are we talking about again?"
Glaring daggers into those pleased-looking eyes, you bit out "Mingi, you idiot! You were the one who made me admit I liked him in the first place, what do you mean who?"
Before your long-haired friend could answer, his silence starkened a not-so-subtle "Really?" from outside the door, through which Wooyoung and Mingi suddenly came barreling, the latter practically shoving the former aside to get next to you. Your eyes widened, heartbeat speeding up multiple times its normal pace.
"Yes!" Those dang sparkly eyes you wanted to stare into forever. That deep voice. Excitement in that deep voice. Mingi's gaze traveling all around your face as he reached clumsily for one of your hands, the other pumping like he'd just won a football game. "Yes!"
You couldn't take it; flushing and grinning a winning expression of your own, you felt your heart burst and soar as you stepped forward, carnival bell ringing over and over again. It rang so loud, in fact, it practically possessed you, Mingi's victorious shouts and even the way he started bouncing started to drain away in the swell of your heart, your eyes and brain only seeing him. More specifically... without a single forethought, as you did most things when you were around Mingi, your hands reached out to grab his collar, yanking him forward until he crashed into your lips, responding as soon as physically possible. Arms sliding around his neck, you picked up the pace, feeling Mingi smile and totally coming undone, knees almost buckling until you felt a hand steady you around your waist. When you pulled away, Mingi tightened his grip, keeping you in place as your foreheads connected, both of you giggling like schoolkids who got caught passing notes as you began whispering all the once-secret feelings you shared for each other.
"Hm, this might get annoying, too," Yeosang commented.
"Yeah, totally," Wooyoung agreed, leaning against the doorframe he'd just been pushed against, "but at least they'll break less stuff now."

DPxP5 - Hero vs. Vigilante (Part 2)
Danny's nightly patrol got interesting real fast.
A whole lot of trivial stuff - small ghosts just causing a fuss that he dealt with quickly and early in the night. So when he catches a dark figure bouncing from rooftop to rooftop, it piques his curiosity. And a bit of concern.
So he flies closer, making sure to stay under the guise of invisibility as he does so.
He takes in the boy's odd outfit first; a split trench coat, stark red gloves, a domino mask on his face... he looks like a master thief on the way to steal something.
No ghost sense though. Must be human, but the way he was moving was far too smooth to be normal.
And how his dark hair curls is.. vaguely familiar...
He decided to follow the masked boy, in part to satisfy his curiosity and in part to be sure the new arrival isn’t a threat, or here to actually steal something.
He sees the boy's acrobatic flips and swings through the city with nothing but a grappling hook tucked up his sleeve. He sees his stops becoming more frequent as he pauses for breath... and to glance around.
Not a problem, Danny thinks. He's still invisible. Unless he has thermal vision or something crazy, he's just fine where he is.
... He curses himself for thinking that when he sees the boy's eyes shift from dark to red. Even more when they lock with his. And he draws a weapon from his side.
Instinctively, Danny holds up his hands in surrender. "Wha- hang on-!"
The masked boy narrows his eyes as he quickly pulls the pistol around, pointed right at the ghost boy.
Danny reacts quickly, a beam of cold energy firing from his hand to encase the firearm in ice before it can used. This only briefly stuns the thief as he reaches for a more close-range weapon quickly after, but Danny freezes his feet in place. The blade in his hand is of little use if he can't get close enough for a strike.
The boy struggles a bit against the ice, but it doesn't let him budge.
Danny lets out a quick sigh of relief as he makes himself visible again. "Ok- can we relax a bit here? I just wanna talk."
The masked boy immediately looks back up, his eyes still sharp. "Relax? You're the one who was following me for the past five blocks!"
Danny narrows his eyes at that, crossing his arms. "This coming from the guy wearing a mask. Who even are you?"
"I could ask you the same thing, spandex."
Danny's expression falters for a moment at that blunt snark, sputtering for a moment in search of a response before he continues his glare. Even as a small smirk tugs at the other boy's lips.
An unstoppable force meeting an immovable object... both stubborn in their own rights. Two things were made clear to the ghost boy; this guy is human, and he's not going to cooperate like this.
He sighs, some of the tension in him easing up. "Let's.. start over."
He carefully floats closer, holding his hands up again to try and show he isn’t here to fight. "I'm Phantom. I take care of most of the ghost problems here in Amity Park. And you...?"
The thief pauses at that, silently debating if he should respond at all...
"Joker." He finally answers. "I'm just visiting. Not here to cause trouble."
Danny smiles a bit at finally having something to call the boy, trying to brush off the attitude in that answer for the time. "Alright. Joker.”
He looks the boy over again before firing a small beam of energy to break the ice at his feet, allowing Joker to move. A little more quiet shock goes to his face as he shakes off the shards.
“I’ll take your word for it.” Danny continues. “But if you go back on that, it’ll be a different conversation.”
Joker looks back up at Danny, sheathing his dagger with a smirk. “You'd have to catch me first.”
Danny matches that smirk. “You really think that’ll be a problem?”
There’s a mischievous glint in his eyes with that response. “We’ll see, ‘hero’.”
With that, Joker takes a step off of the roof and continues his swinging around the city. Danny almost follows after him again, more out of a competitiveness than anything.
But something else tells him this won’t be the last encounter with Joker. Whether that’s a good thing or not… he’ll just have to see.
