Im surprised on how many people are getting the Fractured Jinx skin. Im also surprised that they included the Sanctum (its called sanctasanctórum in spain translation there's NO WAY in hell im pronouncing that) in the loot tab but this being the first thing that pops up, if you want to check your loot like chest and keys you have to go through the sanctum tab.

after seeing the godawful trailer, I did a reread of the Electric State and i cannot physically understand how the russo brothers did not "see potential" in the story

i'll admit, i underappreciated the writing on my first read! going over it again there is so much richness to the character building and the dread of the atmosphere. There's a vibe that I can only describe as desiccated americana and i love it. The world is rotten and dying, and there is really nothing left to do but go on for going on's sake.

anyway i'm doing a very large essay on Stålenhag's whole body of work, but the Electric State holds a special place in my heart as the first of his books I discovered and the most resonant to me, so i just had to share my thoughts right after the reread.

This is less about the artwork, which i could talk about for ages, and more just a general overview of the story themes specifically!

(Moderate general spoilers? i don't go into much detail, and it's not a story overly reliant on its plot twists anyway)

The hopelessness of The Electric State is rather unique among Simon Stålenhag's works - his other books, set in Sweden, are much more fondly nostalgic, though they of course offer strange horrors of their own - but of a much more physical, immediate level.

The Electric State is different. It takes place in an alternate 90s US even more drowned in consumerism and blind greed than our own. A civilization that is crumbling, not from nuclear war or global crises or meteors, but by its own hand, by capitalism driving itself into the ground. The perfect pleasure machine, the neurocaster headset, leaves people twitching, comatose creatures whose minds lie in vast Silicon Valley servers as their bodies are left to starve.

Michelle does not have the privilege of escapism. She is one of the few left to wander a silent world, an apocalypse without people to see it. She is privy to the horror of watching the inevitable trajectory of a world falling to its death, and feels only recognition that it's probably better this way.

Michelle is never sad about the end of America. She doesn't ever reminisce about how good things used to be, or how we should have "appreciated it while we had it." But she certainly does reminisce.

She has the memory of her foster parents, who derided the government "coddling neurine addicts" like Michelle's mother. She has the memory of her grandfather coughing himself to death in their tiny apartment, irradiated from his lifetime of underpaid work assembling gigantic war drones. She has the memory of her mother overdosing on a drug the government hooked her on during her service in the military. She has the memory of her first and only love, a love which the world hated, how it kept her alive in her foster home of Soest City, and how it was ripped from her by the pastor.

Unlike Stalenhag's other stories, there is no element of nostalgia or quiet undertone of hope. Only disgust for what came before, and quiet fear for what comes next.

The horror of the Convergence, the eldritch machine god hivemind, is not even very relevant to the story - if anything, it's a side plot. When Michelle faces actual danger, it's never from giant robot gods in the mist; it's from cops and hotel clerks, from doomsdayers hoarding guns and a FBI agent hunting her down. She lives in fear of other people, of people who say they want to protect her.

But when she sees the gigantic silent machines wandering through the mists of Oregon, she isn't afraid. It's almost peaceful. The Convergence is beyond understanding. It grew out of the servers where millions of minds seeking oblivion from the world went to escape, and they converged into something unknowably vast who wanders the world in a hundred million thoughtless bodies. It's otherworldly. It does not fear, it does not dream, it does not hope, it does not hate. Maybe that's better.

I was scared. But I also felt something else when that thing stepped out of the mist in front of our car. I can't think of a better word than awe. Like when you suddenly become aware that you've walked into the wrong part of the woods and come face-to-face with a gigantic wild animal. Beyond the grotesque, there was also something else - something majestic.

And in its wake, the citizens of Point Linden, hundreds of people linked together, their neurocasters connected to the oily god in the mist, floated across the ground in front of the car, and they looked almost happy. Calm and peaceful, they moved past the car and formed a single group again behind us, and soon disappeared into the mist again.

If you will forgive my somewhat clunky metaphor, being a Jew on the Left often feels like I'm in abusive relationship.

I'm most certainly not going to go to the Right not only because of my morals, ethics, and values, but because whether it be overt or covert their end goal is the death and destruction of me, my people, our culture, and everything we hold believe in. It is like the Right is someone who just all red flags and your gut tells you if enter into a relationship with them the only way it ends is with them killing you. But the Left, well the Left seems cool and you get along and have similar view points so you think okay this could work. But it turns out the have some strange friends who have some real not okay thoughts and the Left will say "I'm not really with them you know", but they will still do stuff with and invite to stuff and won't end the friendship when those friends say some real disgusting things. Then as things progress you are not allowed to have things from a different perspective made from the nuances of your history and experiences. Then Left is telling you can't have certain thoughts, feelings, or be hurt by things. The Left is telling you what think is not what you think, what you heard you didn't, what you saw you didn't see, you just don't get it, you don't understand. Suddenly the rules that you both agreed to are being changed on you, and you are being told that you liar and are in fact the one with power and abusive. Not just that antisemitism is not antisemitism and according to Left you call everything antisemitism to delegitimize and downplay and shutdown. Suddenly the Left knows your history better then you and is explaining your beliefs, history, just everything to you as if you don't know it all already and know it better and more in depth. You are alone with no one and the Left is saying you are cheating with the Right when you would never and you just want to make it work. And it all is mess.

That is basically how I feel right now about the Left and how it feels to be a leftist and Jewish.

I mean it has always been somewhat difficult. There has always been a pretty large amount of antisemitism there. But right now it is on a whole kind of level.

I mean there is the old joke about hating Jews being the one thing that can bring the left and right together.

I think a fair amount of what I'm describing other marginalized people's have felt to a degree as well on the left. I do not want to discount those experiences.

I think overall the left needs to do better, I think it needs to stop being so White TM like white focused in its leftism, I think also that using the USA understanding of Race and Racial politics is dangerous and plain unhelpful when applied to global scale.

I think the Left needs to stop viewing the amount of color in a persons skin to what they must be because it ignores so much history and nuance. This doesn't mean we ignore White Privilege because we can not. This means we need to start having nuance and dialectical thinking going on. Such as understanding Conditional Whiteness and White Privilege are not the same.

The Left also needs to take Colorism more seriously as a whole and do more to combat and end it.

The Left needs to learn and understand just how much of the world we live in now is built on so many systemic abuses. And that the very foundation of it, no material that the foundation is made of is Systemic Ableism, Systemic Anti-Blackness, Systemic Antisemitism, and Systemic Misogyny with everything really branching off and out from there.

Some say they serve as diplomats but all countries have dipomats and they sure do not have coronations and grand funerals.

Doesn't it cost people money? Like all their leisures and hobbies are costly, and they sure hell live a life to their fullest. And it's not like they're answerable or accountable to the people?

What they speak about Meghan is so disgusting. I'm not big fan of hers, but they really character assassinate her. They would protect a pedophile happily but not a lady who just have disagreements with her in-laws.

So, to answer your main question.

Personally, I’m a Republican (not the American party, just to clarify) in that I disagree with the very concept of monarchy in the year of our lord 2025. It’s an archaic institution that exists to reinforce the British class system, which is why the class system is so difficult to explain to people who aren’t British (it’s ingrained at every level of society, and the monarchy is its most visible symbol).

And yes, they are paid from our taxes, though the Royal Family and their supporters like to spin it as though they “give back” more than they take.

Essentially, their income comes from several sources:

1. The Sovereign Grant – This is taxpayer-funded and is set at a percentage of the profits from the Crown Estate (which is a massive portfolio of land, including the entire sea bed, and assets technically owned by the reigning monarch but managed independently). The royals get a cut of this money, and the government keeps the rest. The argument they make is that they generate more money than they cost, mostly from tourism, but honestly, people would still visit Buckingham Palace even if it became a museum. And London is the best city in the world (totally not biased) regardless of if we have a king.

2. The Duchies of Lancaster and Cornwall – These are not taxpayer-funded but are huge private estates that provide income to the monarch and the heir to the throne. The Duchy of Cornwall, which currently funds Prince William, has been under scrutiny recently for being a bit of a slum landlord.

3. Private Wealth – They own a lot of land and assets, much of which was acquired centuries ago through a spot of feudalism, colonialism and funded by slavery. Their personal wealth is apparently extensive, though they’re very secretive about just how much they have.

While I think we should scrap the monarchy entirely, I also think that’s pretty unrealistic given how ingrained it is in British culture. Imo a more pragmatic approach would be paring it down to just the monarch and the heir, none of this funding for minor royals like whoever the fuck Princess Michael of Kent is. There’s no reason why taxpayers should be subsidising luxury lifestyles for people who got their privilege because of the luck of whose vagina they came out of (especially when we have massive and growing inequality).

Also even if ostensibly thier power is mostly symbolic, the monarchy still wields influene through soft power, connections, or the fact that they can, theoretically, refuse to sign off on government decisions (though that would cause a constitutional crisis). Ultimately, they don’t just represent Britain’s past; they actively reinforce its class system, which is why they’re still so fervently defended.

And on the Meghan point, the way she is spoken about is absolutely vile and absolutely unhinged . I wouldn’t call myself a huge fan of hers either, but the sheer level of character assassination, compared to the protection given to, say, Prince Andrew (an actual nonce with a such a unique sweating condition it needs to be studied asap) is wildly telling.

You know what irritates me? Text about white privilege (No, it's not that I'm mad that it's said that white people get sympathy more often, because it's true, I can confirm that, yes, I'm white myself, but I've seen so much shit that I agree with that), specifically addressed in the fandom to underage characters, who are victims of their parents (Mean characters who are mean because of toxic relationships or abuse), it sounds weird, like writing off a child for being defenseless because he is white and has rich parents, WTF

I saw it often with Chloe from miracolous, but it also happened with Pacifica from GF, that their redemption or sympathy in the fandom was related to it, people are children, often victims of their parents' abuse (in Pactfika it is the father, in Chloe it is mother), saying that white privilege is disgusting by context, so what, that they come from rich families when violence occurs in them? Are we seriously going in this direction when we attack characters who are children because they do not want to burn them at the stake? (Although Chloe is an accident and the worst thing is that many people defend it, I remind you, she is fucking 14 years old)

Have we seriously gone in such a bad direction that we want children to be harmed because they are white and have rich parents? I wonder if if these nasty characters were non-white, would you feel the same way, because they are also privileged, because many non-white people are not wealthy, so if they are victims of abuse, you should ignore it, because they are too privileged…

White privilege is then, for example, the approach of the police towards whites, which is different from the way the police see black or Latino people, or the case of Ukraine, which is more publicized while Palestine, Sudan and Congo are silent, this can already be called white privilege , not a child who is a victim of violence, damn it

If redeeming a white child who was a victim of violence is a white privilege for you, then something went wrong with your thinking, Chloe and Pacifica are two spectrums, one was thrown into the wrong pile by its creator, while the other got redemption (Maybe it wasn't as good as Sasha and Amita, but it inspired the creation of these two and I love it)

It's just irrational to me to say that a white child who is a victim of parental violence or struggles with other issues cannot be redeemed, or others cannot want this character to be redeemed, because it means white privilege, which makes no sense. the child is not privileged, rich parents are not a feature of privilege, when they abuse this child, the child is not privileged on many levels, because it does not have the privilege of safety, parent-child relationship, lack of loneliness, etc.

As you will notice, many non-white characters have such privileges, which shows the bleak world of this character who you consider "Privileged", in the real world he would struggle with problems related to poor parenting and go to therapy, she would also have a lower view of his problems because "Others have it worse", so she would lead to ignorance of her mental state by constantly telling herself that things are not that bad

Many people with this type of parenting end up like this, either they have narcissistic traits (Chloe and Pacifica) or they look at themselves worse (Amity)

If you believe that responding to this type of violence is "White Privilege", then you ignore that being white does not always mean that you are "Privileged" (LGBT+ people, people with disabilities, autistic people, women, etc.), because it is doesn't work, yes you are in some but you are not in many

A child who experiences violence is not privileged, regardless of whether he is white or his parents are rich, because he is a victim, and being a victim is not a privilege, it is the opposite of "Privilege"

I had to write this because it pisses me off in the fandom, it is not an attack on non-white people, it is an attack on people who think that white = privileged (Which, as I mentioned, has nothing to do with the truth, because so what if you are white, if you are a victim of discrimination due to your orientation, gender, disability or origin? Reader is a fellow lantern, cuz I fuckin love lanterns man. Guess who bought comics today? My collection grows.

You and Guy kind of have a reputation around the lantern corps. Its not strange to find the two lanterns from earth up against a wall making out like horny teenagers. Its honestly become a right of passage for new members to catch you two going at it or feeling each other up during missions.

In the beginning the others tried to discourage you two from being so open about it, and you did try to hide it for a while, which resulted in quickies in quickly made constructs or side rooms, but fate was never on your side and you two kept getting caught.

Both you and Guy have little shame at this point, and you just laugh when others look at you two in disgust or shock when they see you two grinding up against a wall. You’ll be polite and throw up a construct, but that’s about it.

Of course, you two never full out start going at it in public, or where there’s a chance for underage people to be around, but Oa tends to be free game.

You both might be dirty horny bastards, but you have some level of standards, and you are both outright insulted when anyone hints at you two being perverts and doing it to target others.

It’s resulted in some of your fellow lanterns having to hold both you and Guy back when you’ve gotten in pretty heated arguments with people.

If the situation calls for it, you two are completely serious too, so its not like it gets in the way of business or missions.

All in all, when Guy starts groping you from behind and grinding up against you, no one bats an eye. Now, to outsiders it looks like you two are switches, which you are, though it leans very heavily to you topping and Guy bottoming.

Guy likes the game of trying to win the privilege of being the one on top, so you don’t make it easy for him when he starts teasing you, groping him right back, or pulling him around the corner to make out with extra biting.

Your friends just roll their eyes when Guy kicks up his teasing, as they all know to some extent which way this is going, as last time this happened Guy was limping for a few days, though he looked very satisfied.

Cut to you two making out again after a mission, Guys been teasing you for days as he’s trying to rile you up. Its working to some extent, and when he feels how hard you are he looks a little too smug.

Of course, that can’t stand, so you flip your positions and shove him chest first into the wall, pressing yourself up against his back. Your physical bigger size makes it easier for you to cage him in.

Guy would half heartedly try to struggle out of your hold, but just end up grinding back against you with that shit eating grin of his, that challenging look in his eyes.

That grin is quickly wiped off his face when you start grinding against him hard enough to force his hips forwards into the wall in front of him.

The grip you have on his wrists keeps him from touching himself so all he can do is try to choke down his noises as you keep pushing him, biting at his neck, and grumbling about how much of a tease he is.

Of course, you can’t allow him to finish too easily, so you end up edging him a few times, slowly working him up with the grinding only to pull back at the last moment. You only allow him to finish after he’s grasping at the wall whimpering and whining for mercy.

You know that’s just him playing, as if he truly wanted it to end, he would safeword. But after he’s been so good, you finally reach down to touch him. Since Guy is already to keyed up, he comes very quickly, throwing his head back and yelling at the top of his lungs.

You finish quickly after that, and after making sure Guy is fine with some on the spot aftercare (some hugging, kissing, and cuddling), you two go back to do your lantern jobs.

The unamused looks you get from your fellow lanterns makes it clear you were nowhere near as quiet as you tried to be, but both you and Guy can only grin and wiggle your brows at them.

idk if it was ever mentioned before but youtuber Shaun did a vid on Harry Potter where he pointed out the show only ever framed things as Good and Bad People and that was how viewers were supposed to read their actions

Harry is Good so it's fine for him to fat-shame Dudley, Draco is Bad so it's bullying and mean if he does the same to Molly Weasley in front of Ron, etc

given how HB has structured most of its scenes I think it has the same attitude towards violence and abuse; most of the scenes in question don't read like slapstick at all

Stolas is Good, so it's nbd if he chokes his butler and (possibly) thows Blitzo out of his house for calling him out

Stella is Bad so her throwing an imp across the room is a huge red flag

As long as they put dramatic music under the violence or have someone cry then the audience should view it as fundamentally different than anything the Good characters do. And even their privileges exist only according to the show's hierarchy wherein Stolas is at the top and anything Blitzo does in justifiable anger or self-preservation is now bad, solely because the show has framed it as such

And for all of that, for all of its flaws, Harry Potter still had a level of nuance that Viv will never achieve, or care to achieve.

Dudley and Harry are both victims of the Dursleys in their different ways and end up on good terms. James bullying Snape is played as abhorrent and absolutely disgusts Harry. Harry realizes that his crotchy gross house elf has been every bit as hideously abused as Dobby and that he should show him some kindness, and does.

I am really not the target demographic for Red, White and Royal Blue and honestly, the entire premise sounds dumb af from where I'm sitting, but all the gifs that crossed my dash looked hilarious and that main actor is beyond gorgeous, so I am going to give it a shot tonight. Even as someone who identifies as a trans woman, it sometimes surprises me how many of us there are. Like, with trans men, it's very easy to understand why that would be appealing. Being raised as a woman sucks, being a woman means being seen as inherently inferior. Saying, "fuck this, I'm not a woman, and you can't force me to be one" makes perfect sense.

Of course, I also understand why so many people coercively assigned female choose to remain that way. It's easier to be what society wants you to be, even if that role is one of disadvantages and dehumanization. And of course, even though i firmly believe nobody has any inherent predisposition towards assigned gender roles, social conditioning works, even when you don't want it to. That's what makes the binary gender system work.

Cis men are simplest of all. For them, the easiest path is also the most socially rewarding. It's no mystery why men choose to remain men.

But trans women are an exception, one that can't be easily explained by rational self interest. Most trans women I've met have described their time living as a facsimile of a boy have told me that they were acutely aware of the way women are treated worse than men, in a way their male peers often weren't. I certainly know this was the case for me, I felt immense shame and disgust whenever I noticed myself being treated by boys as if I was one of them, like we were both in an exclusive club that made us better. It's similar to being a white person who hasn't let themselves slip into blissful ignorance. You feel a disgust with your peers, especially from the fact that it's so clear that they don't care, that they either don't acknowledge the unjust privilege they hold, or if they do, seem to be shockingly unbothered by it.

There's a big difference between maleness and whiteness though, while they are both socially constructed categories, white privilege asks nothing of you, you will be treated better than your non white counterparts by default, no matter how you present. Maleness though requires a level of buy in, and if you don't buy into it, if you visibly deviate from what a "man" is supposed to be, you will lose that privilege, and not only that, you'll become something worse in the eyes of society than a man or a woman, a faggot. A third gender that exists as a threat. If male privilege is the carrot, being seen as a faggot is the stick. It's an incredibly efficient system. People raised as men will either slot into their cushy roles easily, or they will struggle. And if they struggle, the stick is there to beat them back in line, to punish them for showing any amount of human decency.

In that sense, being transfeminine is an act of dissent. By embracing the femininity that is used as a threat, it undermines everything the patriarchy insists is inherent. And it's shockingly easy to shed your masculinity. Sure, we may be called men, but only once they think it will hurt us. They don't see us as men, we're unworthy of such a title.

And while being a trans woman opens you up to the nastiest violence the patriarchy has at its disposable. But at least for me, I take great satisfaction in spitting on the manhood I was offered, treating it as the vile, cruel thing it really is. To choose womanhood, even when everything in this world will punish me for it, proves that being woman is valuable, even when it isn't treated as such.

Living as a woman has made my life better, it's made me happier, it's made me a better person. The hollow cruelty of cis masculinity could never compare, and it's so freeing to find happiness in the one thing we're warned most not to be, because it means they don't have anything left to hold over us but petty violence.

The Mosley Review: Inside Out 2

I don't really say this too often and especially nowadays. We are witnessing something truly special. I was born in 1987 and as a true 90's child, I had the privilege of growing up with family films that both in animation and live action, were fearless in their depiction of the trials we go through growing up. The discovery of how ones body is changing and all the emotional turmoil that comes with. Finding the confidence in your decisions or having pure fear of not fitting in and trying to be cool enough to be noticed and respected. Honestly, that's all just middle school and the first year of high school. Films and shows like The Neverending Story and Freaks and Geeks are just an example of the vast amount of growth one can go through. Those type of films went away after while and now they are slowly starting to come back and Pixar has been the spearhead for those stories in animation. The first film in this now franchise was a burst of brilliance and cut deep into the core of us all that went through the search for balance between joy and sadness and all that came with it. This film continues that with the next stage in growth and the film nails how the new emotions that come with puberty can control you if unchecked. There are so many layers in this film that I don't want to spoil, but I related to every bit of the expertly placed teen and adult humor. Every bit of this film was wonderful and a welcomed natural step forward.

Kensington Tallman was excellent as Riley and she nailed the pure joy and emotional weight that comes when entering your teens. She was funny, smart and vulnerable in the best way as her story progressed. Amy Poehler returns as Joy and she was just as wonderful and even more complex than before. Joy actually has an even harder challenge to her constantly positive nature and its wonderfully addressed. I've always loved her creativity and problem solving skills, but here she almost becomes part of the conflict in a excellent way. Phyllis Smith was awesome and fun once again as Sadness. The bond between her and Joy is stronger and I loved that she was more game to try and help. Liza Lapira was fantastic as Disgust and liked that she wasn't as dismissive of everything this time. Tony Hale was really fun as Fear and he was shockingly more creative and pragmatic this time around. He was almost the saving grace in many situations. Lewis Black returns as Anger and he was as intense and the major scene stealer you'd expect. He gets to have another iconic moment mid way through the film and I couldn't stop laughing. All the core emotions are fantastic and I loved how they had to navigate dealing with the new emotions that Riley has developed.

Maya Hawke takes the lead as Anxiety and the level of stress she delivers to each decision she makes for Riley was expertly delivered and relatable. The message behind her character was loud, clear and a great lesson on letting yourself relax and not let anxiety control you. The rivalry between her and Joy was so heartbreaking and exciting to witness as they both have a similar goal and yet you see the destructive nature of both if not regulated. Ayo Edebiri was great as Envy and she had an equal amount of standout moments when dealing with Riley wanting to be excepted by her new friends. Adèle Exarchopoulos was fun as the bored French Gen Z inspired Ennui. She cracked me up once she was on screen and how connected to her phone she was. Paul Walter Hauser was excellent as Embarrassment and I liked that he became the MVP of the new group. The moments of shyness and awkward interactions were worth it for the equal moments of heartfelt defiance of expectation. There were other characters that weren't emotions, but they still represented the likes of Riley and fill the gap that a certain character left from the previous film. Ron Funches as Bloofy was a great addition as a cross between Blue's Clues and Dora the Explorer. He had the perfect amount of hilarious 4th wall breaking. James Austin Johnson was hilarious as his companion, Pouchy. He was a great help to the original core emotions and I loved his scene the most with Anger. Now the one that nearly stole the film was Yong Yea as Lance Slashblade. He was perfect as the Final Fantasy / Soul Caliber inspired character that was so heroic and yet tragic. The animation on him was spot on and I loved every second he was on screen.

The score by composer Andrea Datzman was excellent and I loved how she made the film feel more epic this time around with more emphasis on edgier tones with guitar riffs and big bombastic percussion. She nails the quieter moments and the most intense anxiety driven moment of the film that we can all relate to. The use of Michael Giacchino's original theme was beautifully woven in at the right moments and didn't overtake Andrea's work. Visually, this film is up there with Pixar's best looking films like Toy Story 3, Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc. I have truly been missing the magic of Pixar's storytelling for quite some time and this film brought it all back. Toy Story was my generations perfect coming of age story and now, Inside Out will be that same experience for this generation and I can't wait to see where Riley goes next.
