times i remember where Alex has said the words "objective correlative": written interview during Humbug era, that narrative/personal question you posted w Jo Wiley during AM, that interview w Matt for Apple Music when he's bald during TBHC. probably are other instances I've forgotten too

something about that makes me so happy bc it really showcases how alex isn't just interested in creating art, he really loves studying it and seeking out references to describe his own process and ways to draw inspiration and better himself

like, you don't just stumble into that term, it's very specific and can only be found in literary analysis texts. idk if everyone here is familiar with that term, but it basically means that the usage of certain imageries, especially concrete ones, can be used to represent subjective emotions and elicit certain feelings in the audience--so like if in a song you say someone left through the door, you're not just Literally saying they left through the door, it can also mean they're abandoning you, leaving your life, breaking up with you, etc

so when giving interviews he uses it as an excuse to not reveal anything personal, he hides behind the excuse that what he's describing in the lyrics didn't Necessarily happen, it's often just a metaphor for something else. but! what fascinates me is that the lyrics Are objective correlatives. isn't that amazing? like he's not just sitting down and writing words that sound good together or might appeal to people, he's Actively making use of an artifice that is beneficial to his art and the way he wants to present it

am i making sense just now? lmao. you know when you had to sit through literature class and your teacher tried to convince you that every word in a poem is cherry picked to serve a purpose because poems have a limited amount of words and each one counts? it is TRUE. it's true i'm afraid. at least with writers that respect art and know what they're doing. alex is a hell of an example, i think. he uses objective correlatives to paint these impressionist paintings, he really knows how to set the mood with metaphors to get at something more subjective and personal
