god i just love fangans so much man. seeing people coming together to create something inspired by something they're all passionate about, seeing everyone have different takes and ideas on a similar concept is just so cool and amazing and i hope people never stop making fangans or if they are in the middle of making one they don't give up, because i love them and i know thousands of other people love them too :D

The religion section of my bookshelf has been growing more quickly as of late (something about the spring and autumn always gets me, I don't quite know why), and I am growing so tired of the incredible condescension toward anyone who leaves the faith community of their upbringing or heritage, either to join another tradition or to seek a secular life.

Most often, the 'failure' (and it's always framed as a failure) seems to be pinned on the individual as a sort of shallowness -- that they don't adequately understand their own tradition and if they'd delved deeper into such-and-such or so-and-so, they would have inevitably found renewed interest and commitment, or that they're too enmeshed in their day-to-day life and comforts to accept the inconveniences, discomforts, etc. that arise from maintaining a practice and/or holding the mental and spiritual space their tradition requires, or that they're merely giving into social pressure. In other cases, the authors gesture toward institutional failures -- inadequate outreach and programming (particularly for young adults or families without children), lack of support for struggling members, refusal to change with the times and address the anxieties and joys of their members, etc.

Certainly, both of these things can be true, and I don't mean to say that they aren't, but I wish the authors of the books I've been reading would leave some space for the simple fact that different things work for different people. If, after serious consideration of their own innermost desires and their relationship to their faith and associated community, someone finds themselves seeking a better fit for their values, sense of community, or other priorities, that seems like something that should be congratulated. Maybe they'll find that what they wanted was there all along and reaffirm their commitment to their tradition, maybe they'll find something else fits them, maybe they'll find that they need to step outside of faith communities to meet a certain need, in whatever degree each of these might entail -- regardless, good on them for being willing to explore themselves and the richness of the world around them!

Inevitably, questions of faith, belonging, and seeking are complicated and bring up a lot of difficult feelings and history, especially in marginalized or persecuted communities who've had to fight to maintain their faith and traditions, but that means you need a complicated and compassionate answer to them, stemming from a place that seeks to understand the range of individuals' experiences and desires rather than to immediately condemn them. No one tradition is going to work for everyone, and in any tradition, there's beauty and love to be found and nurtured.

Hi everyone! As the Queer Jewish Pride event is in the last stages of planning, I can already give more solid info about the events.

Pride call - we are having a call on Sunday, 16th of June, where we will have a queer religious service (religious as in Jewish obviously), and we will have some time to just socialize with each other, have discussions, etc. The time will still need to be confirmed, as we're trying to accomodate as many timezones as we can.

Queer Jewish Zine - we are trying to put together a Zine, and if you'd like to be a part of it, you absolutely can! There is more info on this in our discord server but to summarize, anyone who is queer and Jewish (or converting) can submit a piece of art in any medium they'd like, centered on the topic of Queer Jewish identity. The Zine will be made available online at the end of Pride month for free. If you want more info and/or want to participate, just DM me and I can give you the sign up sheet.

Book Recs - we are compiling a list of books that feature Queer Jewish characters/themes, and we'll be posting those recommendations sometime this month.

how is the writing process different from other fics (for example, canon-compliant or in-Panem AUs)? how much research goes into it?

do you feel immersed in the world that their mannerisms, speech patterns, etc come easily to you? or does it take conscious effort to regency-fy these things? (as a non-native English speaker, this is the thing i am always curious about when reading historical AUs!)

what are your non-fan media recs for someone who knows next to nothing about regency era? (sorry if you shared something like this and i missed it!)

Oof! My husband jokes that the only history I know, I learned from American Girl Doll books, which is some what accurate: I absorb history best when it’s the backdrop of fiction (especially a romance)

A few years back I went on a ‘classic’ author binge. I would read/listen to a book and follow along with the shmoop/cliff notes/spark notes, then finish off by watching any screen adaptations I could find. (I wish I had known about tumblr then *stares wistfully off into the distance*)

With that in mind, I’m not sure I have a full grasp of what each time period is… Regency is more a vibe than a historically accurate set of dates in my mind; An amalgamation of the things I read and watched and very light research… Idk I don’t want to take the fun out of storytelling by getting too caught up in that stuff, which I understand may not be for everyone.

Anyways…

I’ve enjoyed a lot of adaptations of old books. If we’re talking specifically Regency - in addition to the novels, Pride and Prejudice 95, Emma 09, Persuasion 95 are my favorites! I also love Lily James and Matt Smith so Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was fun!

I know you said non fandom but I’m going to mention cwmilton because I adore their Emma FanFiction so so much!

I think War and Peace is technically Regency Era though not set in England. I slogged through the novel and there were parts I enjoyed, but not enough to do it again. Again my love for Lily James and James Norton had me watching the 16 BBC adaptation and enjoyed it for them and the costumes.

I’d like to check out and Tom Jones is on my list thanks to @wildwren and Mr. Malcom’s List is another I hope to read/watch!

I went through Dickens, Brontë, Hardy, Gaskell so if anyone wants to talk adaptations!

So I’m not sure I’ve answered your questions 😳… so I would say: usually my desire to write a historical AU comes from recently consuming a peice of media from that period - So I’ve already got the vibe fresh in my mind. But also yes - I do think it’s difficult to write and stay in that time periods speaking pattern and vocabulary.

Despite getting like four hours of sleep I just played the most thought-provoking freebie indie visual novel with a simple gothic style to it

-- and last night I played an indie freebie platform with a gorgeous gothic art style --

and since tcoaal is my current hyperfixation ( primary content on my blog, and the reason a lot of folks are here atm ) I thought that as I'm going through my Steam games I've been hoarding forever ( especially freebies ), I'm going to make a collection of games with a similar feel or style and compile a recommendations list here on my blog.

I feel that not only would that be good exposure for those indie developers, but it would also give me the ability to give other people an idea of warnings and whatnot before they click into the game. ( I do not have an major triggers and can play dark fictional content safely without any threat to my mental health. )

Would people like that? A rec list of gothic style games ( some free, some paid ) with content warnings ( but no detailed plot spoilers ) so that people like me who are perhaps impatiently waiting for tcoaal updates can find some similar content or themes in other games in the meantime?

These games may not even fall into the proship or problematic(tm) category but I think it would be nice to share more of what seems to be a niche interest in dark or edgy content for a lot of us, and right now I have the time and means to explore some options available to me.

Hey there darlings <3 I’m Nikholas but most people call me Niko, you can also call me Nick or Neeks or give me a your own nickname if you want I love nicknames and my pronouns are he/him

I also tend to not use periods when I’m speaking because they feel very harsh to me and they make it difficult for me to get my tone across properly (this does not extend to my writing)

My Hogwarts house is Slytherin. my Pjo cabin is a ongoing debate but either Hades, Apollo or Dionysus. And my birthday is August 17th in case you were wondering :]

Thinking about fandom interactions, I'm wondering about how we as fan communities can create fun environments and engage with other fans more!

You can answer (or not answer) however many of these questions as you want! The questions bolded with their number in purple are the ones I'm most curious about.
