All nominees who had "Invite to collection" turned on have been requested to add their nominated works to our collection. However, many nominees did not have that feature turned on, so we welcome those people to add to our collection if they wish.

Lilies don’t grow in the dark by moonpigeon90 shouldn’t have been nominated as it doesn’t meet the requirements - it’s a wonderful story that deserves love from the Jily community but it starts off with unhealthy Snily and it’s not primarily a Jily story, even though that’s naturally the end game!
- from a fan of the story
Thank you! We reviewed the tags and you are right - it doesn't fit our criteria. We're in a rush to record all the nominations we're getting and some things might escape our notice, so we're happy to be corrected if something seems off!
The story will be removed from the nominations list.

Hey, poll anon here. I took a step back and want to apologise if my initial ask came across like I was giving you a hard time. It wasn't my intention, I only put to question the necessity for the awards, not the effort you and your team put in. I felt steamrolled by the reply and that of Anna so I got defensive. I appreciate the poll and clearly, there is still an audience for it, my bad. I didn't mean to start anything, good luck with it all.
Hi anon!
We appreciate you reaching out again to explain, and apologise in turn for any hostility. It was never our intention to make anyone feel bad; however, as you yourself mentioned, there has been controversy surrounding the awards for some time now (and as Anna explained, it's a regular phenomenon in all fandoms, not only this one). So we are naturally suspicious of anonymous asks questioning the need for the awards.
Truthfully, there is no need for the awards. We only do it because they are fun, we've had fun with them in the past, and other people have fun with them as well. Therefore, we want this to be a fun event and a friendly space for those who wish to participate. We understand those who don't enjoy it for whatever reason and we respect the wishes of those who opt out. For what it's worth, all creators we've reached out to this year (for clarifications etc.) who were not aware of us, have been delighted to hear that there are awards and they have been nominated.
We will also respect anyone's wish to withdraw from the event in the middle of it. This goes out to everyone: If at any point your participation in the awards causes you discomfort, please contact us to withdraw your nominations and we will take care of it. We have already extended the opt out period but there is no need for people to stick around if they find out they can't handle it.
Best,
The Jily Awards team.

Since one of the admins is going on a hiatus are the awards officially called of?
No, the awards are not called off and will not be called off no matter how much abuse anyone tries to pile on us as a team or on Ray in particular.

Okay we are gonna say this once! The anons that have come in have not all been the same person. The person who sent the last anon came forward and we discussed their concerns - there are no hard feelings. We are not discrediting that some people have concerns about/do not like the awards - it’s never going to be a perfect system for everyone, but we are doing the best of what we can with what we’ve got.
Again: The awards will continue as planned this year. We already made a lot of changes this year to try drag the awards away from the negativity associated with them in the past - long before we were around, let alone the ones running it.
IF it goes ahead next year (as currently the majority of you do find this a lighthearted and fun event at the end of the year) further changes will be added that hopefully address some of those concerns. Which myself and the other mod were already discussing and laying the groundwork for anyway… we just didn’t want to throw too many tasks at ourselves at once, given we are new to this.
WE DO NOT WANT PEOPLE HAVING A GO AT ANONS regardless of whether you interpret them as rude, bitter or passive aggressive. Because it breeds the environment we have been looking to avoid while also being transparent about our purpose and perspective here.
All our posts are tagged so you can block the tag or us to avoid seeing stuff if you want no involvement.

I think people have legitimate concerns about the awards since every year there seems to be some kind of drama that often results in people leaving the fandom.
The responses to these anons have been passive aggressive and defensive and have only fuelled the flames without taking into account the history of these awards and the ways people have been hurt by them before. You might be new to running the awards, but the awards have a long history that honestly hasn't always been good.
As mods you're hiding behind anonymity, which I understand considering the hate that the mods have received in the past, but it does add to the level of distrust around the awards and if you're so scared of getting hate about a project that you won't put your name to it, isn't that a sign that maybe it's time to let that project go?
It also means I don't feel like I can send you a message that's not anon because I don't know who I'm speaking with and there's no opportunity for open discourse.
We understand people have had issues with how the awards were run in the past - that is an unfortunate fact we inherited when we took ownership of the blog. We can not change the past. We can only operate in the present so we did all we could within our power to make it as fair and fun a process as we possibly could:
We turned the awards blog into a year round thing, we accepted any fic that came in so long as it was Jily. We posted those recs every single month without fail.
We offered the ability to opt out - something that has been used historically - so anyone who wanted to opt out for whatever reason could. We said we didn’t need a reason, we didn’t ask for one because we respect peoples opinions and want to opt out. We even extended the branch to those who opted out last year but hadn’t messaged in this year to say they wanted to opt out again just in case someone forgot.
We offered even more categories for the chance at more opportunities to be named - so that those who write long vs short fics weren’t overshadowed. I will stand and name myself as one of the people running this year if it puts and end to this unnecessary back and forth with an anonymous person or persons. You are welcome to come and DM me.
I Ray, @charmsandtealeaves have been doing my best for this fandom for the better part of the past two years.
I’m sorry if you read our response as passive aggressive. I’ve stated that we wanted to be firm on our stance so you can interpret that as defensive if you want - because of course as one of the people behind the scenes doing all the admin hours I obviously think this venture is worthwhile. I haven’t won an award but I did enjoy the experience of seeing nominations and hyping up my friends. Which is why I stepped up when Ava left. I haven’t been around long enough to know the years of fandom drama and history behind a silly little awards thing, or who has apparent beef with whom - and frankly I don’t care. I’m here to read, write and share Jily fic.
The anon expressed concerns about people’s mental health over not winning. Mental health is a genuine concern and I am a massive advocate for it. However, I still believe if you only exist to create to win one of these awards then you’re creating for the wrong reason. And if you are upset because you weren’t nominated for an award - there is the option to nominate yourself and always has been because nominations are anonymous we don’t release how many times someone was nominated because that doesn’t matter it only takes one - if not being nominated is enough to leave the fandom over it… then I’m sorry but that’s something you personally need to work on and maybe you should start seeing this (being writing fic) for what it is - a hobby done for free and for fun.
I continued the anonymity left by Ava for this exact reason. Because no matter if I say so publicly or not there are going to be people who have strong opinions against the awards and they are entitled to them, and they are entitled not to participate. They are not however, entitled to keep sending messages that we shouldn’t exist because of something that happened years ago and because some don’t think they should exist at all. And I didn’t want that in my personal inbox but also understood that anonymous asks let people ask questions they might be too shy to ask public facing so they stayed on over here.
I’ve been the public face behind a lot of events over the last two years and that hasn’t stopped me getting anonymous messages about how I’m doing it all wrong. Or quite frankly worse ones that were derogatory and personal.
I’ve done what was asked. I addressed the concerns that came in the form of an anonymous ask politely and respectfully given this year’s history. I offered a poll as requested. If you read that response as passive aggressive well… that’s down to your interpretation. I’ve had enough of drama. And from all I’ve seen the drama stems from something I wasn’t even around for and has nothing to do with me, or how the awards have run this year. It has nothing to do with our current existence and the effort I’ve put in this year - both to the Jily awards all year, the gift exchange, Jilytoberfest, every Jilychallenge, Mystery Microfic May, jilymicrofics and the discord.
At the end of the day I’m here writing because I love Jily and I love all the people who come to read and enjoy what I put out too. But I will admit I’m tried of whatever this is.
If you want to, as you say have open discorse, my inbox is there, but I’ve said my piece and I respect their are different opinions but that’s not gonna change the awards being held this year. All posts are tagged so you can block them or this blog if you like. ~ Ray

'I love rec lists, rebogs and shares, bookmarks, favorites and finding new fic as much as the next person, why does it have to be one person versus another, one fic versus another, why not share all?'
wasnt actually critical of you or accusing you of not doing something, maybe dont be so quick to think people are attacking you
Is there a point to these continuous asks?
We have been getting these sort of asks all day and answered them to the best of our ability, only to be accused of passive-aggressiveness.
The post you are quoting challenged the point of the awards and suggested a poll. So we made a poll.
It's a busy period for us. Nominations keep coming in and we have to sort them out. We have no time for incendiary asks. If you have a question, ask straight; if you have a criticism, state it clearly. Further asks of this nature will be ignored.
Thank you,
The Jily Awards team.

I was indifferent, but the tone of the passive-aggressive responses to asks has put me firmly in the "it isn't fun anymore" column.
Hi Anon!
Apologies our responses to asks have come across as passive aggressive. We weren’t trying to be - just firm.
We are two volunteers from within the Jily fandom who just wanted to contribute to something we enjoyed last year. When we took over we were very clear with each other that we wanted this to be fun and if it wasn’t we wouldn’t do it.
However, when we started we both mutually agreed we would be firm about any passive aggressive, fishing, or harassing asks we might receive. Which we were warned about when given the account.
We are here to provide the platform. We are not here to have harassing anons sent into the awards or our personal ask boxes (as has apparently happened historically), we are not here to debate what should or shouldn’t be allowed other than it must be Jily from within the last year and making sure it sits in the right category (of which we have provided many). We trust that people will read what they want to read and ignore what they don’t - as is the etiquette of fandom spaces.
An ask yesterday wanted to drag up “tumultuous times of the past” that we had NO involvement in, criticised us for not doing something we’d already been doing (the rec lists for the past year), and had a message at the end that was not for us but for the wider audience once it was published.
So we did publish it. We explained we had already been collecting and providing rec lists submitted by you - the fandom readers, and outlined our beliefs of what the awards purpose is. You can disagree with that if you’d like… we even provided a poll as requested!
Our message is simple: we aren’t here to be harassed, we aren’t here to tell you what you should or shouldn’t read, we aren’t here to assign worth to your works. You are the only person who can do that as its creator - a silly little internet badge at the end of the year shouldn’t be what you strive towards and create for. And if we as the awards are no longer wanted given the volume of effort it requires - we will give it up next year.
However, a lot of time and effort has already been sunk in on this year’s awards, not only by us as the administration but by those who have already sent in over 100 nominations - so we will continue to honour our commitment this year. People are welcome to continue sending in Nominations until the 22nd of November as planned.

Hi - if I read the rules correctly, there's no correlation between volume of nominations for a given fic and outcome? The outcome is decided by votes only?
I ask because I haven't done my nominations yet (slaps wrist) and want to check that there's no need to nominate a fic for any category that it has already been nominated for?
This is correct! The nominations are only used to create the lists of nominees, so you can save your time and ours and not send in any fic nominations for categories that they already appear in. You are welcome, however, to send in additional nominations for different categories!
Remember that you can send in as many nominations as you want, and that self nominations are welcome and encouraged!

I know that in the past fics with certain tropes (like dark!james) have been banned from the Jily awards, is that still the case? Or are you accepting nominations for any Jily fics that have been completed in the last year?
Dark!James was not banned last year (a decision that predates us), yet to the best of our knowledge no such fics were nominated last year, nor have we received any nominations of this nature thus far.
We don't have a content ban in place right now. Other than making sure the nominated stories fit their category (which is tricky in some cases, and has given us a headache or two!), the only lines we've drawn are that:
Jily has to be THE main pairing. Not a side pairing, and not one of the main pairings.
James and Lily cannot be shipped with other people. They can date other people for plot's sake, but if you have to tag your fic Jegulus, for instance, we will probably reject it.
We trust that people tag and warn their fics correctly and that the readers take those tags and warnings into account before diving into a new fic; and we urge you to remember that all the categories are for your favourites awards. We don't force people to read all the fics before voting. You can just look at the description of a fic, decide that this is definitely not your favourite, and move on to the next one. There already are fics with sensitive themes among the nominees (sexual abuse, addiction, eating disorders - to name a few) and people should not feel compelled to read anything that makes them uncomfortable. It's something every author is aware of when choosing to tackle such a subject.
However, we will not become a platform for harassment - for us or for authors. One of the cardinal rules of fandom is Don't Like, Don't Read; and anyone who feels the need to send inflammatory asks over what is basically a few glorified rec lists and an award that amounts to a shiny banner and a dose of bragging rights is kindly requested to go outside and touch some grass.
At your service, The Jilyawards team.

will voters be required to submit emails?
Hi Anon!
No, we will not be collecting emails via the google voting form. We understand that not everyone has a fandom associated email to supply.
We will be making a post about how voting works once the nominations period has closed.

hi! thank you for hosting this. is the voting system and platform going to be the same as last year?
Hi Anon!
We have opted to use google forms this year for the voting system as we were unfamiliar with operating Airtable (which was the platform used last year). It will still be "select X number of answers" until the final voting round.

I’m not here as often as I used to be, and it actually came as a surprise to see the jilyawards are coming around again after the tumultuous times in the past.
I get that as a fan creator part of it is praise for a job well done, (kudos, likes, reblogs etc etc) but aren’t the awards just creating a competition out of that hard effort?
I love rec lists, rebogs and shares, bookmarks, favorites and finding new fic as much as the next person, why does it have to be one person versus another, one fic versus another, why not share all?
Maybe it’s the minority opinion, or maybe you could do a poll or something, ask the audience their thoughts?
How does not ‘winning’ affect a creator's ability to create?
Are the awards a popularity contest or is there something more to them?
When you look at a list and see yourself absent do you feel bad?
I hope all participants gain something from the experience, but to anyone who doesn't get what they're hoping for, know your work was appreciated and you have value regardless of the results.
Hi Anon!
You admit you haven’t been around as much as you used to be so maybe you missed it but we’ve actually been sharing and accepting fic recs and putting out lists ALL YEAR! So this message is a bit disheartening after all the volunteer hours we’ve put in this year. Something we’ve received overwhelmingly positive feedback on and planned to continue.
At the end of last year Ava stated she’d be stepping down from running awards and the new team volunteered to take her place so it could still exist and made some changes - like the fandom generated rec list every month- and added more categories because we’ve just always found the awards a bit of fun at the end of the year and wanted it to serve a greater purpose than just a “contest”. We have nothing to do with whatever the tumultuous times of the past were, and have no interest in knowing what they were either.
People are always welcome to nominate themselves or a fic/art and we’ve tried to be very encouraging of that. The awards can be a great way for newer authors or works that are under rated to get noticed! And people aren’t forced to participate if they don’t want to (thus the opt out list). So we get the awards aren’t for everyone and that’s okay!
In our view the awards are just another platform for works and folks who were enjoyed this year to be celebrated, shared and highlighted. It’s fun to see what’s out there and who’s done what during the year. There’s always going to be the fic that gets 8k kudos and the one that gets 8. Kudos and popularity aren’t the be all end of fic writing/fan art creating. And these awards are just supposed to be a bit of fun to round out the year. We as the hosts just run the admin behind it and we don’t make any decisions about who “wins”.
If you’re basing your ability to create on how popular your work is and aiming to win a silly little internet award at the end of the year… we suggest maybe this isn’t the hobby for you, because that’s not what it should be about and it’s certainly not what we aim to be about.
We’ve already gone through the effort of organising the awards for this year, but people are welcome to let us know if they don’t want it for next year and just want the rec lists because we can start a whole new blog for that and leave this account behind (or to someone else) if it’s not fun anymore and not appreciated.
