thing is i dont fully disagree that amys personality has changed a bit over the years and that it sometimes feels like the writers are over-correcting for past mistakes with amy by writing her weirdly in other ways . but the way some people get like. actively angry over her crush on sonic being toned down and more recent media not placing so much emphasis on it and being more willing to explore other interests of hers really comes off like theyre saying "its actually a good thing for the main girl characters defining trait to be that shes in love with the protagonist" which is like . come on man. you cant be serious

THIS ONE. alrighty this is off the cuff and terrible, lets go.

so this panel isnt like, that bad in context when it comes to Sonic. i think specifically "ive made peace with enough enemies to know there is a better way" is a really interesting line here, because it calls back to the amount of times that the "villain" hes fought has just been a person whos hurting, and how hes been able to help those people. it makes sense that eventually hes more keen on trying to figure out someones whole story before deciding if theyve gotta go (which is rare).

but i want to talk about the FRAMING of this panel, and specifically the larger context of this issue in particular. theres a lot of flip-flopping in perspectives. usually, IDW is told through Sonic's perspective (loosely, this kind of thing is up to interpretation a lot), but in issue 50, it switches rapidly between four different groups -- Sonic and Surge, Tails and Kit, Eggman and Starline, and Belle and Metal. within these groups, the perspective its being told from changes a few times, but never as much as Sonic and Surge's do

i actually love these two when they interact as a storyteller myself, and one that has handled scripts too often for my own liking. Sonic and Surge do this thing where they push and pull the pacing of the script to fit their motives -- Surge keeps trying to escalate things, whenever shes in a panel everything starts pushing rapidly and it feels like the panels are tumbling off the page. when Sonic does anything, though, its slow and deliberate. hes having fun fighting, sure, but he can very much tell that Surge is trying to kill him and hes not having any of that. Sonic keeps things slow and focused, Surge tries to push things faster and unfocused. i could get into how this reflects her motivations and stuff but thats not what this is about i already lost track of what i was talking about fuck hang on

ok so. Surge knows shes supposed to be Sonic, to be BETTER than Sonic. its all she knows, really, and thats the problem. shes traumatized and full of rage and Sonic has been put on this high pedestal, not just by her, but by everyone. she cannot stand this.

this panel is how SURGE sees Sonic, specifically the composition. hes shrouded in light and physically above her -- its not even that subtle of a metaphor, they use it all the time in idw.

the entire overpowered saga shows Surge clawing for control of herself, her life, her freedom... this issue sets all that up in the main story. the way Sonic is framed here isnt how he sees himself at all. weve seen him do this exact same thing from his own perspective before, where everyone is on even ground. he doesnt see himself as above anyone, this instance of him being depicted as such isnt alluding to how Sonic feels about himself, its how Surge feels about Sonic.

and, look, its not the most well-done in the world. this issue has a whole host of problems, evident by the constant switching of focus from one group to a next (a problem that i think they did better on in the Phantom Rider saga). i literally forgot about Belle and Metal in this issue bc theres just so much more going on, i wouldve loved for them to slow things down a bit, maybe splitting it into two issues, but hey, what can you do, yk?

as an aside, i think its really weird how people narrow in on this specific panel of Sonic as being "so out of character", which i sorta like, 30% agree with (i think some phrasing could be better), and then ignore the page right after it...

...in which he pretty much says "you dont get freedom if youre gonna be a problem". funnily enough, on twitter i have this flow chart saved whenever i need a quick guide on Sonics morality and stuff, its really not that complicated

none of this is new imo, we see he has the same philosophy in sa1 and satbk. Chaos was blinded by rage and pain after being trapped for thousands of years RIGHT after they were attacked by the echidnas. Merlina was so scared of death (implied to be because she had lost family members and wasnt able to cope with it well) that she became a monster in an attempt to never let anything change ever again. these arent very different stories in my head i guess, just cases of Sonic seeing people who are hurting and doing his best to free them from that.

uhhhh anyways. all this is disorganized i forgot what i was talking about like 5 times while writing this but. people on twitter are ripping into this issue again. like its a b tier issue stop acting like its an f yk Q_Q i will defend anything if people are too mean tbh

first analysis post im gonna yap about sonic

amy saying "i'm not just a damsel in distress anymore" in frontiers absolutely sucks (very very late to say this but still)

she was NOT a damsel in distress for being kidnapped by metal sonic as a child, or for getting her own story alongside sonic and his superpowered friends just to save one bird, or for convincing gamma to help her and turn against eggman through her kindness, or for saving the entire world by inspiring shadow to fight for good with nothing but compassion and love for the world and everyone on it.

it's awesome to watch sonic and his friends use the chaos emeralds and be heroes, but we as an audience can't relate to that. we can't go super or run faster than light or save cities or defeat gods. but what we can do is help the people around us no matter how small or insignificant it may seem, and this is what amy represents. she has no superpowers, she doesn't fight aliens or gods or giant robots or evil geniuses. but she's given an entire story alongside everyone else in sonic adventure anyway, and in that story she shows she doesn't need to have these insane powers to be a hero, and the audience sees ourselves in her. we can't do that stuff either, and amy is there to show us that's okay and we can make a difference just by trying to help people in any way we can and having love for others around us.

so basically, amy is the sonic cast member that shows us we can be like sonic too, and we don't need to be physically strong to do it.

and then sega made her super strong with her crazy hammer, likely because they wanted the most prominent female character to be strong and independent and not a "damsel in distress" like her older characterization. she fights alongside sonic because she's physically strong enough to keep up and a useful asset. i dislike this aspect of her recent interpretations because it goes against the entire idea that her power is in her love and compassion rather than her skill or value to a team or any other quality that makes her just as good in a fight as anyone else. i don't necessarily dislike these interpretations of amy, but in being just another badass fighter she shows a far less valuable and relatable message, in my opinion.

I watched Sonic 3 last week now Ian’s holy shit. It was truly the best fucking thing I’ve ever seen holy shit. There’s so much I want to say about it and just saying it was so good isn’t enough IT WAS PERFECT SO PERFECT I LOVED IT WAHHHNHHHH. I had to share my thoughts on it so here there are!

Anyways I am gonna just ramble out everything I need for this because the brainrot is so real AND I NEED TO TALK ABOUT THIS SHSHHSEHHSSN

- i actually cried quite a lot actually so many moments just tug my heart especially the flashback moments with Maria and shadow man their story is so tragic they deserved so much better 😭 I kept jumping and giggling in my seat and just tried to keep my composure over certain moments ESPECIALLY WHEN LIVE AND LEARN PLAYED I HAD TO KEEP MYSELF FROM SINGING ALONG HWBWHDHDEHHWHJWJSJ.

- God the way the movie opened, where Shadows beginning to wake up and he’s seeing memories of Maria already like okay straight away to the pain and angst I see

- ALSO THEY COULDNT HAVE WRITTEN MARIA AND SHADOW MORE PERFECT I actually loved their relationship and dynamic in this sm they were so adorable and the memories of them spending time and being like family just tug my heart 😭

- also the first section of the movie when sonic and shadow had their first fight was amazing. Sonic asking about who did his highlights when chasing after shadow made me giggle for sm reason lol

- They’ve changed up Shadows backstory a little, not having him be man-made but instead coming from a meteorite and like a straight up alien. they’ve also written out Maria’s sickness which tbh im not entirely sure how I feel about that? Like tbh it’s not something like the worst change ever but it does make me wonder why they changed it especially since it’s a core part of her character in the main universe but tbh this is still a completely separate universe so really in the end it’s not the worst change and not something that completely ruins the experience. (It just made me curious really) but yeah everything else with Shadows backstory is absolutely amazing and I loved it!!

- ALSO SONIC CRASHING OUT AFTER SHADOW HURT TOM OH MY FUCKING GOD THATS EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED AHHHHHHHHHHHH

- and the scene when Sonic runs over to Tom to see if he is okay and calling to him in desperation as shadow just watches seeing exactly himself in Sonic atm as he had lost Maria eughhhshshshshsh

- Gerald. Just Gerald. Like holy shit his character was so interesting here because in the main canon universe he is already a very complex character but here holy shit I really didn’t expect them to go with a very huge darker twist with it. Cause in the main universe he dedicated everything about his research towards Maria and curing her of her illness that he even went into lengths of accepting some alien warlord to help him make the ultimate life form knowing the consequences that could come with that. And here he used his grandson Ivo and shadow to accomplish his plans of destroying everything even themselves. You can tell here he really had lost it with the death of Maria but here he no longer even cared about Maria’s wishes and rather what he wanted to avenge her and it’s a even darker side of his character. The fact he used his grandson to get what he wanted like- hacking into his creations to lure him in and try to play the role of grandfather to only want to use his genius brain and the fact he never had anybody as a way to help him achieve in destroying the world. Like wow. Just wow.

- Keanu absolutely did a fantastic job as shadow. I CANNOT wait to see more of what he does with the character

- Revenge guac shouldn’t have made me laugh as much as it did LMAOOO

- Knuckles and Tails were wonderful in this movie they really feel like friends/brothers and the way the three of them really cared for each other was so sweet.

- Tom and Maddie were also amazing and I loved their parts in this movie sm. the fact they were WAITING for sonic and co to come back with a world disaster to deal with because they were bored 😭 they are so used to these wacky adventures it’s become such a norm for them that’s honestly so sweet 🥹

- The way Sonic and Knuckles were gearing up to fight each other with Tails being right in the middle before Knuckles decides to let Sonic know where the master emerald is was done so perfectly, that scene had me on the fucking edge of my seat

- I was also worried that they would do a third act break up with team sonic cuz I’m not usually a fan of that trope but they executed it PERFECTLY oh my god

- and at the end Sonic’s apology to them when he knew he was in the wrong and let his anger and vengeance get to him and knuckles going for a fist bump and Sonic just hugging him??? Oh my sweet boys oh how I miss them already they were the perfect team in this movie I can’t wait to see more team sonic again 😭🥹💙💙

- also I loved Sonic’s development??? I just love how every movie he’s growing more and more as a character I just love that sm

- God I wish we had more scenes with Maria and Shadow I’m just not over their interactions they deserved sm better 😭

- also I love tails’s role in this movie!! Dude was really the MVP fr and I tried not to laugh when tails washed away stone and shadow in the giant robot crap like dude casually caused violence and I love that for him lol

- Stobotnik was perfect in this film I literally started to sob when eggman told him off because stone realized something off about Gerald. And when that heart felt goodbye to stone played it was so wonderful and heartbreaking I was sobbing atp. if this is Jim’s last film then that’s okay he went out with a BANG (literally)

- ALSO WHEN LIVE AND LEARN STARTED TO PLAY???? AND SHADOW AND SONIC DID THE DAB UP THEY DO IN SA2 I HAD TO TRY AND COMPOSE MYSELF BECAUSE I WAS JUMPING IN MY SEAT I was pointing at the screen and saying “they did the thing they did the thing!”

- Also when Gerald made that misogynistic comment about women being in the military me and my friend (who went with me to watch it) just looked at each other because WHAT 😭

- I loved how the eclipse canon lookd a lot like the space colony ARK I love the reference to it sm

- I almost screamed in my seat when metal sonic showed up at the end AND NOT ONLY THAT BUT AMY?????? OHNMY GOD IM SO HAPPY AHHSHSHHSSHJ I’m still not over it

- now I want villain stone for the fourth movie like PLEASE ITS SET UP SO WELL HERE. Stone losing robotnik definitely would play a huge reason for his villain arc plus someone had to make metal sonic.

- ALSO I LOVED THE PARALLEL TO SONIC ADVENTURE 2????? WHERE INSTEAD OF SHADOW TURNING BACK TO HIS MAIN FORM AND SONIC KEEP GOING IT WAS THE OTHER WAY AROUND SHSHSDBEHSHWHSHSJ

- That entire scene when Sonic and Shadow were fighting in their super forms WAS LITERALLY SO INSANE MY JAW DROPPED WHEN SONIC MANAGED TO TURN BACK BUT LOOKED UP TO ALSO SEE THAT SHADOW HAD TRANSFORMED

- Also I just loved how Eggman randomly announced he’s Bi/pan it was truly beautiful

- AND ALSO SHADOW IS STILL ALIVE YEAHHHHH. I mean I did see it coming as he literally survives the end of SA2 (even though he originally actually wasn’t fun fact) but also the fact there is a confirmation on him getting a spin off it was pretty obvious lol but STILL especially since his “sacrifice” scene really hit hard. I really hope in his spin off we get to see rouge and maybe even learn more where he came from…especially from a certain alien warlord 😙

ANYWAYS honestly this movie is now the best movie out of the three. It was just an amazing experience and I loved every single moment of it, it was an amazing adaptation to SA2 for sure and I’m honestly still not over it at all, this movie was quite the experience and I definitely recommend it sm it’s an amazing movie and I can certainly say it made the inner child inside my heart very happy.

some thoughts on sonic 3 (no spoilers, i promise!!) I NEED TO GET THIS OUT BEFORE I EXPLODE 😳😫

- so i saw it on christmas eve!! i REALLY really loved it, it was SUBLIME. STUNNING. PEAK CINEMA. I NEED TO REWATCH IT SO BAD. IT WAS LITERALLY SO GOOD

- but it felt a bit rushed 🙈 imo it needed more steady pacing and natural build up 🤭

- i feel like they focused too much on the robotniks when that screentime could have benefitted shadow, or even our other main cast

- SHADOW WAS INCREDIBLE. idk what else to say besides he was amazing, super badass, angry yet super cute >:3 i expected nothing less tbh - they handled his character with A LOT of love and care!!

- MARIA WAS AMAZING TOO!! i feel like she's spoiler territory so i'll just say i absolutely LOVED finally getting more maria content!! before dark begginings and shadow generations, she was just "shadow's friend" and we didn't know much about her... the movie further gives her more individual character outside of that, which makes her more sympathetic and shows how much she really means to shadow ;w;

- all the character interactions WERE SO GOOD. team sonic, shadow & sonic, shadow & maria, the robotniks, tom & sonic (i wish they had more screentime together, they're such a cute duo 🥺)

- AND ESPECIALLY THEY DID SHADOW & MARIA SO DAMN GOOD. THEY HANDLED THEIR HEARTWRENCHING STORY AND THEIR INTERACTIONS SO WELL

- the entire final act of the movie was INSANELY good, i still cant believe what i watched 😫💦

- there were several gasp worthy moments that made me LOSE MY MIND and shook me to the core, and days later im STILL thinking abt it. this movie did a great job at evoking emotions omfg

- i feel like the movie was a tad TOO humorous this time around, maybeee even more so than the first two films, which stole from a couple few serious/heavy moments. but when it REALLY mattered, they did a great job at keeping a serious tone and breaking my heart 🥲🥲

- i liked gerald and he's def very different from his game counterpart (as expected from the trailers) but in a good way! but also, i feel like he could have benefitted from being less goofy and more serious 😅 overall he's an interesting character

- i loved the drama and angst throughout the movie sooo so much PERIOD

Time to rant about eggman apparently lets fucking go gang, again i preference this, im not DUNKING on anyone who writes eggman as a gentle man or something of the sort, this is not a callout, i pinkie prommy.

But eggman.. ive seen this fandom over the years water him down from a tyrant who is cruel and vile to a fucking idiot ho makes robots. Guys. Please. Realistically i dont believe he would ever adopt any of his creations besides sage as its explicitly stated he grew attached to her. Hes a tyrannical evil man who wants nothing more than to make the world his toyhouse of robotic machinery. He would be w horrible, swful, maybe even disgusting man if we’re talking cannon. He’d get worse with age, not better. Not kinder. I gotta remind you guys he fucking killed starline. Like. Its stated he KILLED that dude. Or atleast, tried too. And felt literally nothing about taking a life. (Yeah ik starline betrayed him but etill lemme make my point here-)

Eggmans a bastard. An evil, evil bastard. He wouldn’t adopt metal. Or any of those robots. Sage is his only exception for whatever reason, but he made these machines to KILL. To RAVAGE and TEAR mobians apart. He made machines of war essentially to overtake an entire planet. What about this screams ‘hes a father’?? No if anything i believe he’d be a horrible father and probably a child abuser if we’re being honest. Thats why my eggman is written the way he is. I cant see him being this sweet old man outside of fighting. Hes a horrible person! Disgusting and vile! (Endearing), his character was made to be a tyrant and i’m aliiiitttle mad the recent games are trying to water him down from that ngl! May i remind you he, canonically, hired infinite, a mercenary, to torture his arch rival for A YEAR without STOPPING him? He wants sonic dead. He wants all of team sonic in their graves. He jsut wants to be the one to kill sonic and say he did it. Thats why hes kept him alive. Because he wants to soley kill him himself. Its not that ‘he has mercy inside of him’, he wants to be entertained. He wants them to entertain him, make him stronger by letting him upgrade his armies to take more on, and once hes bored and has the formula perfected, hes going to fight sonic until one of them kills the other. (My monies on sonic unless eggmans reflexes are fast as fuck).

TLDR: eggmans not a family man and probably never will be and if he was he’d be abusive at worst negelective at best and he has little to no empathy or mercy imo

Yeah that's fair. Funnily enough I was not much of a shipper prior to SU and tbh even in SU's fandom I'm just Weird about Steven specifically more than anything else. Like I would not be this way about any other show/movie/game, it just so happens that this show has avenues for shipping my fav guy with himself lol But I'm also a Connverse lover, and for most of my AUs that is the "canonical" endgame

Normally my thing is like, dissections and examinations of a specific character over falling into the shipping pits. And I guess in a way that's why I enjoyed SUF so much, it's this giant character study of my favorite guy

Fav episode is a tough one, as im ironically not one for rewatches. I've seen SUF twice, the OG series once, and the movie like half a dozen times

I'll pick The Test, Jailbreak or Change Your Mind for the OG series (honorable mention to Mindful Education) and In Dreams, Growing Pains, or I Am My Monster for SUF.

The Test because it's, in my mind, a very important character moment for steven. It's when he stops seeing his guardians as all-knowing pillars of support for him and starts seeing them as more people he needs to be the support for. it sets a dangerous precedent for steven that doesnt blow up until much later but for the people paying attention you finish that episode and are just like "oh nooooo dont think like thatttt"

Jailbreak is a fave because that's when I started actually being INTO SU instead of just catching up when my sister asked me to. I saw that and was like "Oh baby this is something Special". Fucking criminal that one of Garnet's best moments has been overshadowed by an entirely different property but I'll spare you my ranting lmao

Change Your Mind is just fantastic and so perfectly hammers home all the themes of the show. In Dreams was a personal one for me because at the time that episode aired I was taking care of my mom during her hospice. Steven just expressing how tired he was, how he didnt know how to exist outside of helping someone else… was like getting shot point blank in the chest. I dont often hear a character say something that hits me so hard but that took me out almost. I also love dreamcore/weirdcore aesthetic type stuff and In Dreams does a lot of that

Growing Pains is like the biggest vindication for everyone who was like "hey steven is mentally FUCKED" prior to SUF airing and it's just a good breakdown of what it actually means to do all the hero bullshit, the consequences of it. Its pretty much unheard of for a kids show to tackle such heavy ideas and I'm glad that SUF said fuck it and decided to do it anyway even if it's unorthodox

I Am My Monster is an episode I enjoyed on my first watch because it once again nails home a very big theme of SU which is restorative justice, it's about healing and helping over hurting. But over time it's meant more and more to me as someone who has been thrown into rock bottom and needed so badly for someone to pull me out of it. Sometimes all you need is for someone to give you a hug and say "I love you" and mean it.

right off the bat i need to explain that i am an archie sonic fan so this is largely based on that (mostly in the context of characters)

also! hfr spoilers will be implied to anyone that cares about that

a lot of things would be changed around and mixed and muddled up here, which is exactly how i like my wips. needlessly complicated.

sonic takes the place of chai, for reasons mentioned before. carefree dude who pretty easily goes with the flow, but can still be a bit selfish and immature at times.

but this is where things get more complex than necessary. i decided that it would make the most sense if uncle chuck (that is his proper name to me) took the place of roxanne. after all, he's the one who originally made the roboticizer; it was robotnik that bent the original vision of the machine to his evil whims later.

so now instead of a secondary main character having that deep familial motivation, it's just on sonic. but it's ok i got this.

sally takes the place of peppermint, she's often the brains behind lots of things the freedom fighters do in the comics. im paraphrasing, but it was once put something like "sonic is the force of destruction, but sally is the one who tells him what to destroy" by an antagonist (robotnik, i think) and... it's not exactly wrong.

and here's where things get messy again! tails is also there, but doesn't fill a role from the game. i made one up for him. he made t-pup, who takes the place of 808. the summary of his role is "brilliant kid who wants to help, but isn't allowed to do anything too dangerous, so he finds a way to compromise on that".

moving on, rotor takes place of macaron. big guy who can punch real hard but is also a real friendly dude and is good with machines? yep yeah got it covered.

ok so. nicole... i haven't figured out entirely for this. she takes place of CNMN, but wasn't made by rotor. he just snagged up what he could of her project before new management took over and dug its claws into what she's supposed to be. she's also gonna be gay with sally because it's one of the funniest things ever that The Subtext was in fact entirely on purpose

bunnie korsica. i'm not sure if i would have something more similar to her canon backstory or what happens with korsica happen to her, but the end result either way would be that she starts out with no robotic limbs, and then gets the robotic limbs later. and i'm giving her her cowboy hat back i miss it so much (also i'm so sorry miss bunnie i couldn't figure out where to put your husband in this)

obviously, robotnik (which i keep saying bc im not calling him eggman for this) would take the place of kale. but he's not the final boss (:

THE FINAL BOSS WOULD BE SHARD. I AM PUSHING MY SHARD AGENDA. I LOVE THAT GUY I MISS HIM SO BAD. plus i just like the idea of the final boss being sonic and (a) metal sonic. obviously i'm not blowing him up at the end. anyway here's what i have written down: SPECTRA is housed in an A.I. with a robotic body (shard), who was originally made to be an assistant to charles (uncle chuck). SPECTRA overwrites the original programming, making the former assistant cold in personality and only take orders from robotnik. dismantling SPECTRA allows the original programming to return to the forefront.

from there it's not as thought out. i thought about giving surge rekka's spot, starline mimosa's, but i'm not really sure what to do with zanzo or roquefort. hell, i wrote "orbot and he gets a gundam or something" half as a joke for roquefort on my old piece of paper here. thanks for letting me talk about this it rattles around in my brain sometimes.

i like the generations version of things, where the classic games are when they're all younger. i'd say sonic's probably about 12, tails 5, knuckles 13 and amy 11. robotnik can be about mid to late 30s at this point and i cant be bothered with any other characters lmao

and before someone goes 'bit odd that sonic's eye colour changed lmao' ik but like it reminds me of my brother. he had the same colour eyes as me when he was a baby (really dark brown) but now his eyes are hazel (or, as my dad calls it, 'autumn'). i also like how the only reason they specifically chose green was for green hill zone. i think that's really sweet.

i also like to think the OK KO crossover happened about here, if not, very early on in the modern games. maybe sonic underground??? actually, no, i dont think sonic underground could be canon.

the modern games happen in the order that they happen in. dont ask me about the weird bit. actually, just dont ask at all - nobody knows what to do with this bit. im also counting the idw comics as modern games seeing as they're apparently canon now? yeah idk either.

as for fleetway, archie and any other comics i cant think of, i havent read them, i dont know.

for the ages, generally, sonic's 15, tails 8, all canon ages, yada yada EXCEPT for amy. i dont like amy being 12, so in my head she is 14. i dont even ship sonamy, just the entire thing of her being 12 when sonic is 15 and those two being probably the most canon sonic ship out there that isn't technically canon (STOBOTNIK DOES NOT COUNT JUST IN CASE IN THE FUTURE ITS EVEN MORE EXPLICIT) really makes me feel grossed out.

oh yeah and seeing as he doesnt have a canon age, robotnik is vaguely 40.

this is mostly where actual theory comes into play, because before this point its like, yeah? we knew that? i get that sonic boom is an alternate universe, but i... i like sonic boom. i like it a lot. so it's canon in my eyes. tbf they do all look and act much older, so i'd imagine boom is a future where they're all adults. as of posting this, sticks has only just been made canon, with that mention in frontiers, so if she really does end up in any mainline games, they just happen before this. probably. i dunno, maybe they'll ruin this entire portion.

i think that robotnik is probably late 40s, early 50s by this point, and tbf i think the main cast overall is only rough suggestions, because i could imagine sonic boom happening over the course of a few years. sonic is probably about 19-25, knuckles 19-26, amy 17-24, tails 11-15, and im pretty sure sticks is about knuckles' age canonically? so we'll say she's 19-25.

i get that shadow is 50 and whatnot, probably about 55-60 at this point, but i generally think he's like, a few months older than sonic if we're going based on why we count age (experience and stuff), so probably 19-26, like knuckles.

this is where i think most crossovers take place: mario & sonic, all the weird sega sports games from the late 2000s to mid 2010s (im looking at you, sega all stars tennis/sonic and sega all stars racing (but specifically for the wii (because thats the best version))), stuff like that. with the mario timeline, i said most crossovers aren't canon, but with sonic, anything is possible! because of that, the only crossover than comes to mind that definitely wouldn't be canon is smash, and thats because smash is canonically a kid playing with their toys.

peach=amy - On a surface level this makes sense. Pink + love interest to protagonist + remember in sonic cd when amy kept getting kidnapped? thats a valid argument lol

but their personalities and relationship with their protagonist is totally different. Amy has been chasing sonic so long she's probably won several marathons she didn't even know about, and the relationship between Mario and Peach boils down to "oh you rescued me for the thousandth time. yeah ill bake you a cake and give you a peck on the nose." and mario goes "okie dokie! Wahoo!"

blaize=daisy Again, if i squint at the surface level, I can see it.

an initially obscure female character from a handheld side entry into the series, brought back for unknown reasons and continues being a mainstay.

But Daisy was initially mario's love interest in the og mario land, but then kept getting shipped with luigi (by fans) and eventually made its way into spinoff games. Does this imply that Blaize had a fling with Sonic, but then either Tails developed feelings for her, or vice versa? Can daisy use fire magic? Is sarasaland from an alternate reality like blaze's kingdom, and that's why we havent seen it since mario land? Actually that last one is funny and solid enough im making that my headcanon now.

Wario=shadow Now we get back into the obvious one. "evil" version of protagonist that was so popular in an obscure sequel they got their own game to themselves and remains a mainstay in modern iterations. Does that mean wario can use chaos control? does that mean shadow tried to take sonic's house at one point? did wario have an emo phase? Does shadow eat garlic and onions raw? Has wario used guns before? Will the chao garden minigame get its own indie game inspired by it like pizza tower was to wario land? (wait thats not a shadow the hedgehog question thats illegal-)

Waluigi=silver Ok this looks stupid but hear me out

came as an unpopular addition to the series as a counterpart to a counterpart, but kept appearing in titles until people started unironically loving them for being true underdogs. Also comes with a built in meme phrase ("it's no use!" and "waluigi time!")

i think this is a good matchup.

Bowser=eggman amazing matchup, possibly even better than mario and sonic. large antagonistic men that have entire armies at their disposal and hide away in large constructs, who are frequently seen riding around in a weird bowl shaped personal ship. Their dialogue is also touted by fans as some of the best parts of games (in which they have major speaking roles).

Bowser Jr=Metal sonic

again, hear me out. It's a better matchup than it seems.

more recent sonic media (cough cough murder of sonic the hedgehog) is showing metal sonic as having a son-father relationship with his creator, eggman. (though unlike Bowser Sr. and Bowser Jr., the feeling here is far from mutual or healthy :( )

bonus points for also kidnapping the same pairing one time and one time only (bowser jr kidnapping peach in mario sunshine, and metal sonic kidnapping amy in sonic cd)

The humans seem familiar with mobians and their culture already so they’re not *entirely* alien but I ponder; what does their coexistence look like in your universe of writing them?

In addition; I fkn adore the way you write the kids and their dynamics. Maria is so so lovely and the way you write her makes me want to see her more in official media.

Im following the game canon, primarily Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 06, and Shadow Generations (and the Dark Beginnings short of course).

Since Takotsubo’s a prequel story I obviously have to create some things from scratch such as the ARK’s environment, scientists working with Gerald, G.U.N problems, etc but I want people reading the story to feel it fits believably into the canon as closely as possible. Cue obsessive revisions and editing lol.

NERDERY AHEAD BE WARNED 😝

In the game canon, humans and animal people do co-exist but because many Sonic games don’t show any humans except Eggman it left a lot of people confused for years.

But SEGA cleared that up recently on TailsTube when then explained (confirming many people’s theory!) that humans typically live in large cities on the continents, while the animals live closer to nature on the islands. Humans dominate the planet, though, and it’s implied they set the law. But both humans and animal people are equal in the eyes of the law and can travel anywhere technically.

..Baby Shadow deserves all the love he can get because he needs to enjoy those few golden months before he never knows contentment again. The little guy doesn’t yet know he’s a hybrid - all he understands is that he’s a hedgehog created in the lab by Professor Gerald with a ‘special kind of biology’ to cure Maria. He knows nothing about Black Doom yet.

Another thing worth mentioning is that Shadow has been implied across different canon to come out of his pod already physically mature, but bending that rule slightly in Takotsubo to make him a little bigger than a toddler but grow up incredibly fast like the Biolizard makes more sense especially when you observe the rest of the lore:

-Gerald intentionally gave him a heart bc he wanted him to develop a sense of self lest he become a mindless weapon. But that’s a thing that needs to be cultivated and grown through Living and Learning (ba-dum-TISH)

-Ever noticed that SEGA has very specific mandates about how the characters should be drawn/written? I always assumed not to take the concept of Shadow being grown - still unconscious - with his gloves and shoes inside the pod seriously. It makes no sense whatsoever and I really do believe we’re not meant to take it literally. It’s just a visual rule bc SEGA needs these characters to always present and look a certain way, branding and all that. Like how Mickey Mouse is never seen without gloves, etc. This is also why we’ve never seen baby Sonic/Tails/Knuckles/etc in canon. But you know they used to be.

-Going off that, Shadow needs to present a certain way in official media but it’s still believable to write him undergoing a growth period even if it’s never explicitly shown. Also it’s adorable and fun to write lol

(Also a small Shadow would be easier to train and control should things go wrong than a Shadow already at peak youth and physical strength)

does ventus have a blaze at all. blaze is like a fundamental part of silvers existence. not just in the sense that they need each other (only together do either of them function. both of them need someone else to balance them. if its not each other its espio, sonic. they think themselves independent but when they attempt its consistently to their detriment lmfao) but the way the characters are written are intertwined (prone to overthinking/straightforward and grounded, invested in humanity/detached, open book/very closed off, takes reckless initiative/frozen by decision and responsibility, naive and idealistic/”mature” and practical, one is assured of his feelings about the other but not of her feelings towards him/blaze potentially an inverse, etc). silver was written with blaze in mind given blaze was an established character prior to 06. they sped pair like crazy. also can i point out amy saying she would pick sonic over the world and silver eventually choosing blaze over his future isnt that fucking batshit?theres a quite a bit more to be said about how these two fare towards the end of 06 and how theyve influenced each other and blaze having done what she because of silver but whatever. no they are not in a relationship

Youve mentioned some things but is there any weirdness around memories for either character. shadows life experiences are constantly called into question whether they be that his memories were altered, entirely implanted, or that he is a clone who didnt experience them. They are significant regardless—love, pain can transcend reality. Not to mention the obvious of him being a blatantly traumatized character to the point his stories all revolve around that. Silver has something going on with his reality and memories having been entirely thrown but i cant quite parallel it to shadow beyond the meta of it quite yet beyond them having a someone it revolves around. Shadows character was introduced and concluded in sa2 and that all got thrown out the window by reintroducing him in heroes. Similar thing with silver though his conclusion in 06 isnt quite as overt and satisfying. Kind of like sega was planning on doing the exact same thing they did with shadow to silver but this time on purpose but  Fuck everything i guess!

Shadow can be surprisingly tolerant if he straight up isnt repulsed by you or youre getting in his way. Id imagine vanitas would be doing bad annoying things though so shadow wouldnt be fond of that (kill). Would vanitas want shadows attention at all. Silver actually has more trouble with first impressions than shadow but if hes not in a mood (including when he has his mind set on doing something) hes a little desperate for friendship so win for them. ven has potential of annoying silver depending on how useful and focused he is. im sorry

1) sort of. i dont think any one character is as inherently intertwined with vens character as blaze is with silvers (other, than, yknow, vanitas, but thats in an antagonistic way. i guess it doesnt have to be . in another world maybe.) but as ive said before his arc deals with him being babied/sheltered to the point of being borderline nonfunctional in the wider world. ven is not bbs' protagonist. bbs has two other protagonists, terra and aqua. there's 3 separate campaigns for each of them. (yes their names are wind, water and earth Themeing). aqua and terra are both young adults to ven's older teen but they all act younger. Regardless the times we really see ventus getting babied/sheltered its by aqua and terra. Aqua and terra have a habit of acting out their master's worst traits.regardless of that there is a lot of genuine love between the three of them. actually out of any group of kh protagonists, the bbs trio are the most openly affectionate with each other. they are reckless devotion incarnate . most of the events of bbs are pushed forward by how easily manipulable their love for each other is

ven spends his campaign split between chasing after aqua and terra and being strung along and tricked by vanitas. but rather than ending the world for each other, the world ends because of how they could be tricked using the others. & also ven's arc is about being able to stand without them holding him up. in that scene i showed you yesterday ('im asking you, as a friend... just... put an end to me') directly follows aqua and terra tripping over themselves to offer ven useless and thin platitudes, literally petting his head like he's a little kid. and then he gently pulls their hands off of him and asks them to murder him if it comes down to that. Lol

2) memory is such a wide and encompassing theme in kingdom hearts that generally speaking you should just assume everyone has some kind of memory weirdness going on. but yes. actually what you've described re: shadow's memories sounds a lot more like another kh character (xion, or roxas) who exist to explore themes around how our memories make us who we are etc. kh also explores the idea that even if your memories are fake or belong to someone else theyre meaningful regardless

in terms of specifically ventus & vanitas, there is quite a bit of memory weirdness in that ven doesn't remember much of anything prior to the split. as far as he's aware he came into existence on the day he and vanitas were split. by the time the game's events are happening, ven doesn't even remember that he was split in the first place. he doesnt recognize vanitas at all upon seeing him. this is because his heart was so injured by the split that it left him somewhat catatonic; aware of his surroundings only enough to eat and drink and sometimes move, not much else. he remarks that he doesnt really remember meeting his master nor aqua and terra

vanitas, as far as we know for sure, maintained his memories from the moment he was split. in contrast to ven, who couldnt speak or was even really conscious, vanitas was entirely conscious & could speak. he was still a little funky and out of it himself though.

now... there is some textual evidence that suggests that while ven doesn't remember their life prior to the split, vanitas does. see, ventus (the original one) is a major character in the [Deep sigh] mmo mobile game prequel, kingdom hearts union x. given that that game takes place hundreds of years prior to the main games, something happened that brought (original) ventus to the current timeline. due to some funny dialogue vanitas eludes to not just remembering being (original) ventus in a way ven does not, he also seems to remember the events of khux. this is one of those things that certainly isnt going to be elaborated on until the next game though and thus its pretty useless for me to speculate why or what this means. but im pretty convinced vani remembers [shrugs]

3) i think a lot of this depends on what the circumstances surrounding their meeting is . if nothing like plot relevant is happening i still think vani would be annoying on purpose. He'd probably try to fit silver & shadow into his dichotomous view of light & darkness though im not sure what conclusions he'd come to. if plots happening silver and ven probably wouldnt vibe given that ven would keep getting sidetracked wanting to make friends and explore and shit, but hes still Very strong and useful to have around in a crisis. plus post kh3 ven is a lot more focused and grounded so assuming hes has his #characterdevelopment it'd probably be mostly fine though he'd be sad his efforts to befriend silver mid-warzone would get rebuked. if somethings actively presently wrong he'll be focused. if not he'll be like silverrrrr lets get ice cream or something :) Tell me your tragic backstory

you are So Correct. i sat on this ask for a few days cause i honestly had forgotten about Project Shadow from Joao Filipe Santiago, I had avoided it at first just cause I didn't have the time when it released, then I didn't want to subconsciously be comparing the movie to it since I'd heard it was really fucking good but considering I ended up ... I wouldnt say i didn't enjoy the movie, cause i did, but the movie is what it is, and this fan project is what it is, and the fan project aligns more closely with the kind of story about Shadow that i want to see.

Also i sat on this ask for days because i knew i wanted to use it to yap about comparing/contrasting the two so i'll do that under the cut for the sake of no spoilers

i love that the model was pretty close to Movie!Shadow's model, that's so fucking impressive. the rig is impressive too, he's so expressive!

as i think i stated before, i honestly dont remember much of SA2 since i never properly beat it (my goal this year is to play more games, though, so i hope i will--i do own it on Steam!) but i like this adaptation of the story much better. i love that it's entirely focused on his backstory, i mean i get that the film couldn't do that cause thats jsut not what the film was about. but what i love that they did here, which the movie could have done as well, is that from jump it's clear what Shadow, Maria, and Gerald's relationship is. They're all a family. I like that Gerald is a loving grandfather who becomes vengeful after his granddaughter's death; I didn't get that impression from Movie!Gerald. Movie!Gerald feels more like he jsut Was A Dick. idk. we didn't get to see hardly any of him interacting with Shadow before the present-day things so I can't get a bead on what their dynamic was. here? theyr'e family, and it's even more heartbreaking. Gerald is far more human here than the movie let him be.

speaking of heartbreaking, i love the way they decided to tackle Maria's death scene here. focusing entirely on Shadow's reaction and again with thsoe stellar expressions, we really understand that this is the most horrible thing this little guy has ever seen. and keeping the original narrative of her being directly shot by one person is so interesting. i had forgotten it was just Some Soldier Following Orders who shot her, not a bigger character (for some reason i thought the guy who became the head of GUN in sonic's time was involved?? not sure where i got that idea from) and that he seemed so hesitant; i didn't really like the movie soldier being like LEMME AT EM LEMME KILL THIS CHILD (just didn't really feel realistic in the moment) though i do appreciate the slight anti-military bent of the movie. this is more overt though, i think. the soldier hesitating is interesting and also kinda makes it worse (for Shadow and Maria) in a way. because it's obvious he had a choice, and he chose wrong.

outside of narrative choices and completely unrelated to the Sonic 3 movie i really appreciate how this fanfilm clearly had some limitations but they played to it pretty well. it's a little cheesy in parts but to be honest so is SA2 so it fits just-fine. i'm definitely more forgiving of cheese here than in the Sonic 3 movie tbf like these are fans not necessarily professionals. there's some bits that feel very "we do not have the budget to do a Whole Thing here so we're just gonna skirt around it" and i genuinely respect that. they have good knowledge of their scope here. something i absolutely struggle with in projects lmfao it's a wonder i ever finish anything frankly.

Alright theres something that ticks me off in the shipping part of this community. The sonic community in general, btw, and this is not me yelling at Aaanybody im moots eith in my circle, okay? You are all perfect snd have not angered me i prommy im holding ur hands as i say this

But. Something that i hate to see is people fetishising the characters they write for or draw JUSt to fit them in a SPECIFIC ship. This pisses me off to no end. Im not talking abt cannon divergent muses, im not talking abt people making aus and changing the characters personalities abit to fit the au if its a fandom crossover.

Im talking abt. Taking two characters from the games. Or shows. And Ruining their set personality ENTIRELY for one purpose. To make them FIT with anothers personality just to ship them together. I cant say how many times ive seen this in this fandom. How they ignore years of character development, story, developer personality, JUST to stick them with someone. It horribly pisses me off and leaves a sour taste in my mouth because i personally feel like those types of people would try and force someone irl to change their entire self just so they can date them or something. Its so stupid. Im a multishipper snd i love almost every ship under the sun. YOU PEOPLE KNOW THAT YOU CAN LIKE. FUCKING SHIP CHARACTERS NORMALLY RIGHT?? Alsoooo I’m mainly here to info dump on Lorelai’s brother!! ^^ We’ll call Lorelai’s brother James or Jamie since that’s the only actual name I can think of matching him. But keep in mind I’m horrible at naming so ehh idk. Anyways I envision him look wise to have blue hair like his dad Tom and also being rather tall. But in strength wise he’s pretty solid even if he’s on the skinny skeleton size. But if we’re going to be comparing him to jocks like Lauren and or military/police people like Gen & Grim then yeah no he will lose on a fight. Look wise he’s a tall average malnourished male like one you would see around in college campus bonus points if they’re studying something medicine/medical wise.

he’s also a huge mamas boy and also asks his mom on her opinion when it comes to gift and date ideas. NEVER Lorelai since he’s seen first hand how his sister is and how bad she is with dating. Especially considering how he once saw his sister come home all upset with a huge red slap mark on her cheek one day 😭 So he definitely knows not to ask his sister anything when it comes to romance.

There’s also a couple of reasons which explains why he isn’t a yandere or acts out on his jealousy or possessiveness. 1) he saw how unhinged his sister is when it came down to how Lorelai acts to the person of her affection. 2) he finds the whole thing to be very icky especially if the person he likes happens to be of the opposite gender. So he likely thinks he’s preying on his crush gender wise and incredibly so if they’re shorter than him. 3) he was once stalked by a person in his early years of highschool by a person he rejected and always and still does sometimes feel paranoid and goes to therapy cuz of that. 4) his awesome dad Tom told him and brought him up to be a very respectful person too bad Lorelai didn’t learn from Tom 😒

i feel like it could be a hit or miss with being a mamas boy, either a man can be such an annoying mamas boy where he will prefer his mother over anything and disagree with the entire world if she said so OR the best most respectful individual you'd ever meet. No inbetween.

Jamie would definitely be on the respectful side of the spectrum, citing our previous and current conversations regarding his behavior and personality! I like to think he consults his mom's opinion on general life stuff over his dad, but about his degree or jobs? straight to his dad! He would never abuse his family's reputation to gain a job, not like he has to. But if it ever gets too difficult to find a good job after uni? He's asking his dad to help him out.

And oh yeah, definitely after seeing all the shit Lorelai does to her darling while they constantly reject her makes him almost puke. He would never put his loved one through something so horrible like that, and would try his absolute best to be understanding and willing to listen to any issues his darling has with him.

But at the same time, I feel like a character cannot be a complete character without at least a flaw or two. Which leads me to conclude with, what would his flaws be? And if they were pointed out to him by his willing (ofc) darling would he be willing to change it?
