“And then they lived happily ever after!” Maria exclaimed as she closed the storybook.

“But you were telling me that Prince and Princesses are real right?” Shadow asked.

“Yeah, but it’s not that common anymore..SHADOW!”

“What?”

“What if you’re a prince?!?”

“Me? A prince?”

“Mhm. Regal Prince Shadow. First in line for the Kingdom of Grumpy Faces.”

“Haha. Very funny.”

“Can I be part of your court!”

“Court? Like the law?”

“No, imagine. Knight Maria, #1 in sneaking the prince out of his duties.” She laughed, “What if you meet a cute alien princess! And you have a love story. OHHH THAT’D BE THE CUTEST!”

“Maria.” Gerald grumbled from the bed on the other side of the room, “It is 11:30.”

“Sorry grandpa/professor.” They respond.

“It’s all quite funny, but I highly doubt I have such an important role in the world. Besides, I’m training to protect Earth not some other planet that’s never even bothered to show its face.”

“Well…I guess we’ll just have to wait and see then. You never know. Prince Shadow does have a good ring to it though,” Maria sighed.

I just absolutely loved Shadow and Maria's relationship in the third movie! This is probably the best interpretation of their relationship I've seen in years as Maria is just this little girl who wants to have fun, while Shadow is a brooding hedgehog who was feared by people. Their bond with each other is probably the most heartwarming moment in the entire movie!

That tear in his eye... Oh my God...

It hits harder when you remember that he thought that he'll see Maria again. He didn't think that he would survive this. He was thinking about her during this whole scene because he thought that they will reunite once this is over. Yes, he was fixing what he's done because of Sonic, but he was ready to die whether it was with the rest of the world or alone because no matter how scary this part is, he'll get to be with her soon.

This scene where Shadow tells Sonic to end his life just hits me where I effing live.

What really makes this scene so impactful is that despite the fact he's more than capable of holding his own against Super Sonic even without his own super form, he makes no attempt to preserve his life... because deep down he wants to end it.

And he's not telling Sonic to kill him so he could prove that he's as bad as him or anything cliche like that. He's doing is because deep down he wants to escape from his trauma by giving himself the end to life that he didn't want to admit he yearned for, and that want has now finally come to surface in one final demand for his opponent to finish him off.

Because in the end, he never cared about defeating Sonic and his friends or helping Gerald Robotnik commit omnicide because the only thing he cared about is gone forever (and he only did the latter because Gerald manipulated him into believing that if he didn't help the mad doctor, then it would demonstrate he doesn't care about Maria at all).

GOD I LOVE THIS CHARACTER!!!!!!!!!!
