bored as hell waiting for my laundry to Finish Already so I can fuckin pack it so I'm trying to think of what colours to associate with/assign to each of the jdate quartet. like for art purposes but I guess I'm also thinking specifically of color scripting for animation

this got long I'm putting it under a readmore but also I'd love to hear others opinions on this so if you feel like it please do reply or reblog with commentary or send an ask or Whatever You Desire. fuck it send me something via carrier pidgeon that'd be fun

red for dave feels obvious and almost too obvious, and since korrok is canonically a Blue Creature (pretty neat, most evil things are associated with the colour red so blue is an interesting choice, in a visual interpretation of the book I'd lean into that heavy*), I've been contemplating Human Dave having Red and Monster Dave having Blue, at least up until Roger/Robert North puts his humanity back in him which is what I assume the spider dream was about. Either fully reverting to red or the blue becoming less cold would work. I don't think purple is a good colour for dave even though technically that would be the perfect halfway point. it is at least A Possibility though.

I think orange or yellow for John could be neat, they're both typically very bright energetic colours but can also be used to signify danger because of how bright they are for humans. it's the colour of traffic cones and biohazard signs.

but I also like orange or yellow for Amy; yellow is typically a positive colour and I really admire how unflinchingly optimistic she is, I like how she's a very realistic sort of optimistic and not naive. orange for her could also work for it's warmth and complexity, and I think it's quite romantic for her colour to be close to Dave's.

Alternatively it could be very neat for John and Dave to have analogous colours for similar reasons—they're more alike than they first seem. all 3 in my mind should have colours very close in spectrum to each other for cohesion's sake.

I'd go with a deep blue for Joy, to contrast a bright red for Dave and compliment an orange for John or Amy. I like that she and Dave are opposites—might even qualify as a narrative foil to Dave by the 4th book. she's a character who is comfortable in her monstrous nature, unlike Dave, but she's also somewhat of a foil to John (technically offscreen at present) in the way she seems to be pushing him towards being less of a fucking Mess. I do hope in book 5 we see some progress re: John's drug addiction(s) and the things he's unhappy with himself about and I think if we do it'll be in part thanks to Joy (though obviously he's gonna have to take initiative himself). Anyway. I think her complimenting Amy as orange would be neat as well since they seem to be good friends ! I'd love to see more of them interacting. And I think blue and yellow too work well as compliments, just like, slightly to the left. I know there's a term for that but I forgor.

that being said it is also possible to have multiple colours corresponding to one character if they're always used in combination. so the differences between John and Amy could always be in the differential between the amount of yellow or orange, or it could be down to differing shades.

same deal with Dave. maybe once he's been Monstralized that ice blue starts to creep in, until he's reclaimed himself, and maybe it never fully goes away after. while whatever monstrous form he is will probably never be fully shown (which I support, I love a horror story that keeps us Wondering) I think abstractions involving that ice blue (and maybe going fully Limited Monochromatic—white, blue, black, no in-between shades) could be really interesting to show-yet-dont-show those scenes. I'm glad Spiderverse has brought more experimental animation styles to the forefront of people's consciousness but also I've already seen so many independent projects use this concept really fucking well and I think it could be fun to play with

as for other colours Joy could have I think white and/or a sort of pearlescent effect would work really well for her. much as I'm fond of chromatic aberration as being something that signifies a character is in a sort of one-of-many state it can be too jarring and sometimes just plain inaccessible. the subtle depth of shifting colours in that kind of effect would match really well with her shape-shifting. and Arcane has demonstrated very well that that kind of shifting can be very jarring and unsettling and even quite threatening at times, so it's not always associated with a soft beauty.

*blue is usually considered a calming and meditative color but technically if you're just consistent across the work, any colour can have any meaning; especially with Korrok I'd use a very cold blue to emphasize the lack of humanity in this organic machine. That could also provide an interesting contrast to Joy's later appearance with the deeper blue having a different connotation; monstrous with a human influence
