What have you been working on lately?

Oh hi! Admittedly I've been in a semi-bad headspace cause family stuff, but I've been splitting my time between a bunch of AUs. A little bit for Exodus, wrote a oneshot for the Carmen Sandiego (2019) fanom, plotted on an original story of mine etc.

The biggest thing however is @the-world-of-ignavus where I've basically gone off the rails and have been going through with the final snips from canon. Revamped the conlangs, shook the factions a little bit, changed some major plot points etc.

I'm actually in the process of writing the updated and edited chapter for Spark a Light as I work to get everything caught up to speed, but things have just Kept Happening.

Anti-technology people who insist they're not ableist crack me up. What about people who rely on machines to breathe, eat, keep their heart functioning, or otherwise stay alive? "Well not that technology, obviously!" Ok what about AAC users, people who use hearing aids, or otherwise use technology to interact with the world in ways they otherwise couldn't? "Not that technology, obviously." Okay, my mobile phone is my memory, my sense of time, my sense of direction when I get lost, my ability to contact someone when I need help. It is my personal freedom because without it I would need full time care and supervision. But yes, that technology, right?

I hate how technology is made and utilised under capitalism as much as the next guy, but to pretend that technology doesn't greatly improve the lives of countless people, or even allow them to continue being alive, is to be willfully ignorant to the existence of disabled people. A world without technology is a world where a lot of disabled people don't get to survive. Capitalism is the problem, not the technology. Technology can (and should) exist just fine without capitalism.

The interesting thing about medically transitioning is how you might just be treated with the wrong framework.

When I get my hormone levels checked, for instance, they check it against the wrong type of person, so everything is flagged. Did you know that testosterone encourages hemoglobin production? Well, my hemoglobin is perfectly in line with male levels, but my levels are checked for the wrong endocrine system. Before I realized this, I was really confused as to why my hemoglobin was two grams over the range given, and was confused as to why that happened, and worried about if I should be worried about that. But it was a normal consequence of my testosterone levels, which are also flagged though they are well-within the range that is typical for my age and health categories.

The way we treat and measure for trans people and trans patients will affect the treatment and education they receive. There are ways in which hormones especially can influence how one's body operates, and with that in mind, you also have to change the way you interact with a trans person. With my testosterone levels, if you were to measure them against the incorrect endocrine system, you would fail to treat me in reality - that being the way my body has changed and maintained homeostasis since being on T.

Modern medicine today: we diagnose men 4x faster than women with the same disease and we can only estimate baby size with an error of about 1.5 pounds (that's a massive margin since most babies weigh like 6 pounds)

Star Wars medicine: we can save a man from dismemberment and body-covering burns but this woman is dying in childbirth and we have no ideas.

Ronan’s anger boils over. He snatches a clump of Henley’s blonde curls in his fist and tugs at Henley's scalp. “What the hell are you doing? Calm it. Now. Why the fuck are you crying?!”

Izaak erupts into a bout of laughter quickly turned retching, coughing fit.

“That’ll be my handiwork at play,” Izaak rasps, ���Don’t you want to go for a nice little trip down memory lane, Henny?”

“Fuck you, Izaak!” Henley bawls. He wriggles like a worm and tugs furiously at his restraints. He thought the fight had been long trained out of him, but right now every thought, every fibre of his being screams it. Fight. Henley’s head spins towards the vets' gloved hands, swabbing his arm. “Don’t touch me! Get off!”

“Shshshsh,” Ronan sighs and shushes Henley, his towering figure casting a shadow over his trembling body. Ronan's hands cup Henley's head, his thumbs massaging soothing circles into his temples. “Okay. It’s okay. Breathe, pet. In through your nose, out through your mouth-”

Henley's body responds instinctively, like a reflex, obeying Ronan's command without question or thought. Tears stream down his puffy face as he forces deep breaths through his windpipe. His chest heaves and his lungs burn with each shuddering inhale and exhale, punctuated by occasional gasps.

“What’s getting you so amped up, little one? I’ve never seen this side of you. Your eyes are wild. Your muscles are tight. Talk to me-”

“Master -” Henley gasps, “Y-You don’t understand - I - I can’t - not again - please -”
