how do i make my writing more âmatureâ? i always feel like no matter how sophisticated i write and no matter every which way i change it up it always has a sense of being childish or juvenile.
Making Writing Sound More Mature
1 - Better Plot and Story Structure - One of the telltale signs of juvenile writing is a story that meanders, has no obvious plot or structure, has no conflict or has a protagonist with no goal. So, make sure you have a well fleshed out plot, with a conflict, protagonist goal, and which hits the beats specific to your story's genre.
2 - Three-Dimensional Characters - If you're writing plot-driven fiction, make sure your main characters have a fleshed out personality, stakes, motivation, goal, and compelling relationships with other characters. If you're writing fully or partially character-driven fiction, do all of the above, but also make sure your main characters have a relevant internal conflict and a thoughtful character arc.
3 - Well-Developed Setting and World - One common hallmark of juvenile writing is a lack of "sense of place" and under-developed world building. So, make sure you put a lot of thought into where your story takes place... not just the immediate setting of each scene, but the overall world of the story, or at least the parts of it that are relevant.
4 - Incorporate Literary Devices - Juvenile writing tends to be lacking in the use of metaphor, simile, symbolism, irony, themes, and motifs. So, make sure to include those, but also take the time to make them relevant to your story.
5 - Include a Broad Range of Vocabulary - One common element of juvenile writing is a reliance on limited, simple vocabulary. Don't be afraid to use a thesaurus to find more interesting word choices--just be absolutely certain to crosscheck your choices with a dictionary to make sure they are the right choice. Online thesauruses in particular are bad about offering up bad suggestions. Also, make sure to learn and use special vocabulary that is relevant to your story, genre, or setting. For example, if your character is a retired police detective trying to solve a murder on his stalled cruise to Alaska, you need to make sure you know the proper investigative terminology, because he will definitely use it. And, by that same token, you'd want to make sure you know cruise ship lingo as well. And, part of this, too, is getting better at description and the inclusion of emotional and sensory detail.
6 - Use Varied Sentence Structure - This is a big one... juvenile writing tends to use repetitive sentence structure, such as simple sentences (she stood up, she went to the window, she waved at the man), lack of subordinate clauses (Tad Smith, who was a seasoned and retired investigator, had looked forward to this cruise his whole life...), repetitive starts (every sentence begins with a pronoun, for example), uniform length (all short sentences, for example.) So, make sure your sentences are varied. If you read them out loud, you don't want it to sound rhythmic, but more like a complex melody.
7 - Show, Don't Tell... Most of the Time - Telling definitely has its place, but most of the time you want to show rather than tell, meaning that instead of stating things simply and directly (the sun was shining) you want to paint a clear but indirect image (dappled sunlight shone through the trees.)
8 - Avoid Cliche Phrases - Human language is littered with everyday phrases like "to each their own" or "better late than never." Generally-speaking, you want to avoid these phrases in your story, especially in exposition. If you include them anywhere, they're best spoken as dialogue by a character who it makes sense would say something like that. Likewise, be careful of cliche genre or character-type phrases. For example, villains who say things like "we're not so different, you and I..." or "I finally have you right where I want you!" These overused phrases tend to make stories sound juvenile and unpolished.
9 - Avoid Cliche Tropes - Another type of cliche to avoid if you want more mature-sounding writing is cliches of various tropes. Tropes on their own are a good thing, but when tropes are used the same way over and over again in a genre or type of story, they become predictable. For example, the super gorgeous protagonist who everyone is in love with, but they view themselves as plain and not special. Or the broken/hopeless/addict mentor character. It's not that you can't use any cliche tropes at all, just make sure your story isn't riddled with them, and do what you can to put your own spin on the ones you do use.
10 - Read, Read, Read - And I can't stress this enough... the absolute best way to improve your writing style and take your writing from juvenile to polished is to make sure you're reading a lot of fiction, in a lot of genres, by a lot of authors. Audio books, short stories, and poetry count, too. The more you read, the more you begin to: understand plot and story structure, recognize well-developed characters, easily envision complex settings and worlds, learn vocabulary and literary devices, become attuned to varied sentence structure, and learn to recognize cliche phrases and tropes.
Happy writing!

The energy in the 9-1-1 fandom space as of ep.8x06 has been off.
The 9-1-1 official page not posting much about any of this episode (specifically the disingenuous ending of an anticipated queer r/ship) is weird... especially considering how much traction the show got when they introduced AND MARKETED the Bisexual Buck-GayTommy relationship for even more traction.
Oliver just posting some random photos from bts (i know he's had no electricity due to fires) -but then posting & deleting a story of his bizarre response to fans criticism of his latest comments on Buck's sexual habits....
I personally think the main criticism for me is how poorly both he and Tim handled this plot, and the character of Tommy. They yapped so much about being respectful about queer relationships and bisexual representation and then just ended it with a lame, disingenuous conflict after NEVER making a genuine attempt to develop said relationship after season 7. The fact that they never included Buck & Tommy's relationship as a main plot for a single episode tells me that they were NEVER going to treat this queer relationship with genuine care or respect.
Ryan just posted stuff about Eddie (kudos to him, love me some Ryan content)
Aisha posting absolutely NOTHING
Kenny hasn't posted either
Lou just saying it was an honour & dipping. (I DO NOT blame him with the bullying he's faced from buddie stans)
It could very well be the elections & how absolutely insane the world is right now. And it could be stuff that went down bts (we'llneverknow). And trust me, this isnt sour grapes, if they were going to break up eventually, im fine with it. But all I know is, it was made clear that the Buck & Tommy queer relationship would be handled with genuine care & class (Tim) and that they'd "work through their hurdles" & "working out if their relationship [barely developed by the writers/show] was worth fighting to stay together for" (Oliver) and NONE OF THAT HAPPENED.
While the Eddie scenes were amazing & I love that Ryan's getting to explore more of his character, the Buck & Tommy scenes were made to look hopeful & promising, then they lazily scraped a "It's not you it's me" bs plotline &ended it abruptly.
It's NOT queerbaiting, but it's giving, "Yes we know we sold y'all a promising queer r/ship, here it is for 2 episodes, & now, it's done. Gone. Vanished into nothing. Thanks for your invested interest in s7&8a." [Maybe it's like an advanced level queer-stringing-along- ALQSAđđđ¤Ł]

If not Buddie, why Buddie shaped? #2
Following my theory that season 7 and 8 are new seasons 1 and 2 on abc, where the writers revisits the big events from characterâs pasts and retells them (you can read it here) I want to look closer at new episode 8x06 âConfessionsâ.
This is all fresh in my mind, I watched the episode like 4h ago, there is a chance Iâll miss something.
Like I said, I think weâre going to see at least 4 more big moments revisited (or rather the emotional state those events invoked) from previous seasons before Buddie goes canon. Kitchen scene, well, will and shooting arc. And one of those happened in this episode! But also so many other things!Â
EDDIE:
Starting with Eddie in the confessional. I canât help but see his fight club era here (call me bias, I love season 3 Eddie so much!). An attempt to find a healthy outlet to his emotions. Heâs struggling and fighting with his inner demons, this time instead of rage itâs sadness and loneliness.Â
And he is doing it with an outsider's help. Father Brian is like Lena Bosko. Why Lena and not Frank? I think Eddie would just shut on therapy at this point. He needs someone to talk to, someone with opinions and advice, caring enough to want to help but also not afraid to go straight to the point and call his bs - Lena and Father Brian did just that.
Ok. Time to revisit a big event from Eddieâs past - the well. ABC put the call with the little boy trapped in a pipe in episode promo as the red herring. The real purpose of this call was to remind us about the Eddie Begins episode. The important thing from Eddie Begins is that Eddie was alone in the dark pit - and in the end he saved himself.Â
So the real connection between those two episodes is not in the call where 118 saves the little boy, but between Eddie coming out from underwater, drawing a deep breath and Eddie shaving a mustache, shedding his mask and dancing, breathing fully again.
sorry for the meme, I'm tired
Itâs also interesting that the moment Eddie allowed himself to feel joy Buck knocked at his door.
BUCK:
This one is pretty straight forward. Like I said before, Tommy represents Abby - a transformative relationship - like Buck said himself. The fact that Tommy was engaged with Abby is a really beautiful way to further connect and close both relationships. What leads to the break up from Tommyâs side is also similar. Tommy knows he would fall deeply for Buck, and Abby didnât come back because she knew she would lose herself in Buck. They were both protecting themselves.
And here is also a little parallel to Ali. Like her, Tommy offers Buck a proper and honest break up, showing maturity, understanding and clear reason why. And yes, Ali was also protecting herself, ending their relationship before they broke each other's hearts.
And one more thing from Buckâs side. The whole Abby thing throws him off. Maddie tells him itâs not a big thing, Josh tells him not to judge Tommy (honestly, Joshâs speech is amazing!) - this calms him down in the end, dating the same woman doesnât feel awkward anymore. But the questions Josh is asking leave Buck confused. Taking the next step, moving in together - itâs like Buck is trying to prove he really feels those things Josh was talking about (or maybe even compensate for his âfreak outâ, confirm heâs fully into this relationship). And on some level Buck has those feelings, he cares about Tommy, but more than that, he simply feels he should be on the level Josh suggested and he wants this to work. Itâs Buckâs impulsiveness coming to play, an action that causes reaction in a form of big gesture to confirm his feelings - a nod to his relationship with Taylor.
Fortunately Tommy explains those feelings to Buck (and to the audience) in a very kind way.Â
Honestly, their relationship (the last two episodes especially) was handled beautifully, without unnecessary drama, without too much spotlight. It started with fireworks, naturally progressed and faded gently.
The cherry on top: Evan meant something more, something special for Tommy. Ending his goodbye with Buck means âweâre friends nowâ.
BUDDIE:
There are two things here I want to mention.
Ever since Gerrard separated Buck and Eddie this is the episode where we can see them working together as partners again. And this finally wraps up the divorce era.
The ending scene represents different scenes for each of them, ending different arcs.
For Buck the couch scene represents Abbyâs comeback in season 3. He watched her ride off in the ambulance with her fiance (with Eddie solid by his side), and later he got closure from her.
For Eddie this scene represents him being embraced by the 118 after he dug himself out from the well. Heâs connected again, no longer alone.Â
And of course, the most obvious and sweetest thing - itâs the right couch (and they finally drink that beer).
Bonus MADNEY:
Couldnât help but notice some revisits here. Maddieâs postpartum depression is addressed very clearly, nothing to add here. During the pandemic Chimney stayed at Buckâs place, afraid to put pregnant Maddie in danger of catching the virus. Something happened on a call that changed his mind, made him overcome his fear and enjoy the future with his family. The same in this episode. But there is a little twist here and it involves brothers. In season 7 the new audience learned about Kevin. Guess who wasnât yet introduced (and also took care of Maddie during the pandemic)... yes, I believe this season we will see Albert again.Â
Thatâs it for now. Let me know if you want more posts like this. Feel free to contact me if you want some clarification or just to talk.
Tagging some people who may be interested (if you want me to remove you from this post let me know):Â @buddiebeginz @stagefoureddiediaz @lemotmo @inell

Everything Wrong With Umbrella Academy Season 4 (Characters)
The way it felt like someone who had never seen the show wrote this season????
The characters were AWFUL and were almost entirely new characters with all their previous character development forgotten.
Allison - Honestly, I don't like Allison (after watching THAT scene w Luther), so I really didn't care what happened with her this season. I think it does suck that she wasn't able to be happy with Ray, they were nice together. Also, no rumours? Her power was one of the most interesting out of the family.
Luther - People were commenting about how childish and positive he was being this season and how it was out of character from him being so serious. Honestly? I love silly Luther, he's such a breath of fresh air. I also like to believe that because Luther was assigned the leader of the family (being number 1 and all), he's able to enjoy himself without that pressure. Also, I also love to believe that Luther is using being positive and silly as a coping mechanism as to not be overwhelmed by the sadness of losing Sloane and also his current living situation. Giving him his gorilla body back was so unnecessary and makes no sense cause it wasn't the marigold that gave him the body.
Ben - He sucked. I hate that Sparrow Ben was the one that was dragged with them because it meant that we had to deal with him sulking and being angsty the whole time. Also, the character development we witnessed 1-2 just disappeared instantly cause of Sparrow Ben. Also, his friendship with Klaus was the best thing in the show and I hate that we never get to see that in season 3.
Klaus - I was actually so happy for him being sober, even if he wasn't living the best life because of his paranoia with death and germs. So it really sucked when that immediately went down the drain the second his body got the marigold.
Diego - He deserved better. Yeah, his constant complaining about his "belly" (which wasn't even that big of a difference??) and wanting to go back to his old super spy life did affect his and Lila's marriage, but when he realised that he immediately accepted that he was at fault and was willing to improve their marriage to make Lila happy.
Lila - I liked Lila before season 4. I don't know what they were thinking honestly by changing her entire character. Yes, she and Five were stuck for 7 years together, but seriously? That plot added NOTHING to the story because in the end, Lila chose Diego and then they all DIED like 10 minutes later!!
Viktor - Honestly? Viktor didn't really stand out this season for me. Sure, he got kidnapped by Ian Hawk. I thought the idea of him trying to remove the marigold from Ben was a really cool idea but then it just didn't happen. I thought his interactions with Reginald were decent, since it's interesting to see how this Reginald thinks about Viktor compared to the original timeline Reginald.
Five - It's honestly kind of impressive how the writers were able to make the best character in the show the worst character by the end of it. They completely changed his whole character. First, his personality is duller than a door nail. He's so emotionless and so boring. Where's the excessive facial expressions and movements? Second, changing his motivations. For the past 3 seasons we have watched him with one goal in his mind; "Save the world and his siblings". So why would Five ever possibly consider both giving that up for Lila of all people. Third, giving Five a love interest was so useless and lazy. Why would he choose a girl over his siblings? Especially one literally MARRIED to his BROTHER. Fourth, him being all pouty and jealous over Lila choosing Diego (her husband and father of her kids - no shit she was gonna pick him over Five, literally have no idea why Five even thought he had a chance) to the point where he plans to just ditch his family in the middle of a big fight. Five, him fighting Diego in the middle of said big fight. THEN, Five just gives up??? Yeah, that's probably all he could do but seriously, this is Five we're talking about, the guy who survived in 45 years in the apocalypse to try and get back to his family and save the world. Do you really believe that he would just give up?
BONUS:
Jennifer - They could introduce a new character/love interest for Ben but they didn't do the same for Five so they just gave him the only other woman who wasn't his sister???? LAZY. Also, the amount of plot holes with Jennifer's character makes me queasy.

About the ham/pink sausage thing I'd love to know if you think bucking up at ur partner(Assuming jkk are couple or have romantic feelings for e/o) like that in front of other ppl can happen btw couples...... friends? Yes. Siblings? Yes. But couples? I wonder......if my partner does that (jk was kinda pissed because they questioned his knowledge of food or wtv that is) in front of other ppl I'd feel disrespectful maybe not by siblings and friends but definitely by my partner. Of course i don't believe any of the members have that kinda nature where they hit someone that's completely false I believe that. Can you imagine you and your partner in their place? Your partner bucking up at you like that in public? You won't feel disrespected? And i know you'll say jk was joking, he joked when he did it second time but the first time was his honest reaction. It irritated him that they didn't belive he was right.
Hi anon,
Short answer to your question is yes, it can happen. Iâve seen so many people give so many takes about the pink sausage/ham moment but I refrained from saying anything about it until I got my thoughts in order. So many times when people judge otherâs actions they look at it from a perspective that they are used to or through a particular lens that makes sense to them forgetting that in this big world with over 7 billion people, there are different people, different cultures and ways of life so what might mean one thing to you, might mean something else to a different person.
I donât understand why that was a big deal to people ( I mean I do kinda butâŚ) because anyone who has watched even one kdrama or knows even a little bit about Koreans in general knows that koreans do that alot when they are mad or irritated. They buck at other people like they are going to hit them with no intention of actually hitting them. Parents do it to kids, siblings do it to each other and even people in seasoned relationships relationships do it as well. Jk wasnât going to hit Jimin, thatâs for sure. Itâs just that was a knee jerk reaction at that point and from the reactions of Tae and Jimin, that wasnât something Jungkook did often because Jimin didnât seem used to it judging from his reaction.
I understand what you mean about feeling disrespected especially if that is something that happens in public but I doubt some koreans will see it that way mostly because it is something they are used to. Plus, sometimes people could be intentionally or unintentionally disrespectful to their partners, that isnât news.
While that moment left a bad taste in some peopleâs mouths, I actually found it cuteâŚ.not necessarily because Jungkook bucked at Jimin but because when you watch that scene, you notice that Tae was the one who started saying it was ham and he was also the one who kept insisting it was while Jimin only said it once but that one time Jimin said it was the only time Jungkook doubted himself about it. I also found it interesting that even though Tae was the one who repeatedly insisted that it wasnât pink sausage, we only saw Jkâs emotions towards Jimin and nothing towards Tae. Now, most people whom I like to call shallow or fickle would rejoice at the fact that Tae didnât react to Tae who was the instigator but reacted to Jimin who only said it once but to anyone who understands human emotions and knows a little bit of something about life, that single moment right there was more than enough to tell whom among the two Jungkook is emotionally closer to.
That moment to me will go down in history as one of the biggest moments that showed just how close and comfortable Jikook are with each other.
Typically, you are more likely to get annoyed at someone you are closer to because you have more expectations of them than the ones you are not as close to. There is also an emotional investment. Being closer to someone usually means you care more about their opinions and actions so when they do something that bothers you, it impacts you more deeply. You generally also feel more comfortable expressing or showing your frustration at someone you feel closest to because your relationship with them feels secure so you are not worried about how you might come off because you both know each other extremely well, while with a friend you are not as close to, you tend to be more forgiving or less affected by their behavior because your emotional investment is lower, and your expectations might not be as high. Anyone who watches that clip would wonder why on earth Jk only expressed his annoyance at Jimin and not Tae who actually started and instigated the whole thing and this is not to say Taekook arenât close because we know they are but Jikook just have an insanely deeper emotional connection and bond.
Some people think Jungkook was just joking but I think he was truly annoyed and maybe even a little hurt, and his annoyance (though might sound abit silly) probably came from the fact that he expected Jimin to side with him but Jimin didnât or expected Jimin to trust his judgement more. To so many people it might have just been a silly argument about ham and pink sausage bit to Jungkook, it was probably more and some might to relate or understand his annoyance but that doesnât mean his feelings about the whole thing shouldnât be respected.
Jiminâs reaction was also very telling and even though he handled things in a funny and dramatic way, I think Jungkookâs actions shocked him to a certain extent and he probably felt bad about it but he must have understood at some point why Jungkook reacted so intensely. Jiminâs actions also shows how much he knows and is emotionally close to Jungkook because if that were another person, Jimin would have probably cussed them out but he had this extra patience with Jungkook probably because he understood why Jungkook got like that. Compare the way Tae reacted after Jungkook made a statement about him being weak to Jiminâs reaction. One of them was clearly the reaction of a friend (Tae straight up warned Jungkook not to take things far else someone would see blood) but Jiminâs reaction was moreâŚ.emotional. Jungkookâs reaction in the two cases too were telling. With Tae he was quick to say âyes sirâ when Tae called him out but with Jimin, he didnât look like he was ready to let go of the annoyance yet and even after they finished eating he kept glaring at Jimin till Jimin apologized.
Reminds me of that Live from May 2019 in Newjersey where Jimin and Jin turned off the Live before Jk arrived and Jk was so pissed he went to start his own Live. All Jin had to do to get Jkâs forgiveness was apologize once while Jimin had to follow him to his room apologizing yet Jk still didnât let him off easy. These are things that could seem very trivial to people but that shows you that Jungkook might just have more expectations when it comes to Jimin while he doesnât really get that affected by otherâs actions. The rainy day story is also a good example that shows how Jiminâs opinions affect Jungkook differently. He has mentioned so many times that he tries to emulate Jiminâs actions so that already says alot about how much he values Jiminâs opinions and how much expectations he generally has when it comes to him so when he feels disappointed, it just triggers a more emotional response. It also gets a little weirder when you remember that Jimin is actually Jungkookâs hyung which means that Jimin could have easily scolded him like Tae did with Jk realizing that he had just been disrespectful to someone older and ready to apologize yet that is not the reaction we got from them at all.
So anon, I can see why you would see things the way you do but you always have to consider context and the context here would be that, different things are acceptable in different cultures or societies and things have different meanings to different people. And yes, if Jimin is Jungkookâs lover he might have felt disrespected sometimes things like that happen in relationships anyway so itâs nothing new imo.

hi!! Iâve read and loved your color theory and costume metas for a while now. I know the 8x06 stills literally JUST came out like 5 mins ago, but do you have any initial thoughts on them? I thought maybe the black jacket Tommy was wearing while heâs frowning mightâve meant something, but Iâm literally clueless about the topic. (What Iâm trying to say is, what do you think of them?)
Hope you have a good day! Canât wait for 8x06
Hey!
How lovely to hear that you enjoy my metas! đĽ°
I have so many thoughts on the costumes Iâve seen in these stills!
Firstly - lots of yellow and blue theory going on in t his episode - its literally everywhere we look - the calls are all yellow blue coded from what we can see from the stills - the woman at the first call (which hIâm assuming is the divorcee one) is in yellow and blue, the man is wearing blue trousers and blue plaid patterning on his jacket and she stands in front of a very yellow/blue coded painting. Eddie is sat in front of blue parasols when he talks to Hot priest. The kid who goes into the well to rescue his brother is also wearing yellow and blue and the house theyâre in front of has yellow walls, not to mention the tripod the 118 are using is yellow. Iâm screaming a little bit about the fact that we have Buck and Eddie both inside the tripod as well - that is not something we see - ever - theyâd always one of them on The outside of the tripod or they are both outside of it - and considering we last saw one in 704 - when they were both outside of the tripod and divided by a pole - it feels pretty significant to me!
Bucks brown jacket is making my eyeballs pop out of my head - the two directions of the stripes suggests confusion and the little triangles details where buttons would be feels significant as well, plus its a very orangey brown - which plays very nicely into my theory about the season being orange and brown colour coded - and weâve seen Buck in far more orange and especially brown this season than weâve ever seen him before - which I am very intrigued by and also excited for.
We also keep getting him in white shirts this season - it feels like something pretty significant is brewing for him - weâve not really had the payoff for all the white shirts weâve seen up to now and they have always meant Buck in danger before this season. I still think this holds true. I just think that weâre going for a build up to something significant for him - what that is I am not yet sure - Itâs something I keep meaning to look at a bit more, I just havenât had the time to yet!
Then we have Buck in green and Tommy in black.
The Buck in green thing is very interesting to me - the tee is slightly on the too large size - which is in keeping with how they have been dressing Buck this season - weâve had the slow progression over season 7 of his clothes fitting him correctly for the first time since season 3 as he figures out heâs bi, and then as his relationship with tommy had its false start the clothes were ill fitting and then they fit pretty well - up until 801, since then, weâve seen them generally be on the slightly too large side of things - suggesting that while heâs more comfortable in his own skin, things are still not quite a perfect fit - itâs interesting to me that generally speaking - if Eddie is in the scene then the clothes fit a bit better than if he isnât! This green shirt is no exception - itâs slightly too big and itâs dark green.
The dark green matches the break up hoodies and jumpers of Ali and Taylor - its not quite the same colour - this one is more of a dark olive green where the other 3 are much more of a bottle green as you can see above - but I actually think this is a good and interesting thing. The most interesting thing is the progression of what Buck is wearing though. We have a zip front hoodie with a blue hood lining when Ali breaks up with him - and itâs worn over a black tee. Then we have a hoodie when buck confesses to kissing Lucy - the fact we go from two layers of clothing (visible) to one is in and of itself interesting the fact that weâre still in a hoodie though is an indication of the fact that Buck is still in a similar place to when Ali broke up with him - expecting Taylor to do the same with the hoodies symbolising self soothing - they are generally representative of giving ones self a hug! Then we move onto the knit sweater in the same green for the actual break up with Taylor - weâve moved down from thick self soothing hoodies to a much thinner sweater and now weâve made it to a t-shirt. Itâs suggestive of Buck taking an increasing amount of control and confidence of his life and his relationships - and if theyâre serving him - that heâs prepared to end things on his terms if he doesnât think the relationships is worth pursuing because he is sacrificing too much of himself to stay in it.
I donât think this is going to be the break up scene to be honest - I just think its going to be the scene that makes it clear that the relationship is on a time limit - that this scene will kick start things towards a break up! Part of my reason for that is because Tommy is in black and not in blue!
I do want to point out that behind Tommys head we have a new coat rack - replacing the bike Buck has had hung there before. The departure of the bike without brakes interests me - it again plays into the idea that Buck is more in control of his life - that it isnât out of control and that he can put the brakes on things if he wants to. But I digress - what I actually want to point out is the fact that on the one side of Tommys head is a pair of jackets hanging up - one green and one blue, and on the other side of his head is a yellow ochre jacket. Now green/blue is the colours of break ups, but its also a colour way we see on Buck and Eddie a fair amount when theyâre together - the previous episode is a perfect example of this. Yellow is also the colour of communication, but it is also Eddies colour - the one weâve only seen him wear once - in the lasagne scene of 601 - those jackets are important. They are creating the idea that the Eddie of it all is always lurking and present in the background!
Tommy being in Black is a play on his general colour theming - he generally wears dark colours and black especially. Not all the time, but generally speaking. Iâll do an updated costume list for him if I have the time in the next few days as Iâve been keeping track of his costumes and itâs pretty telling about when he wears what colours. The shirt is very very similar to Eddies black shirts - the western style pockets and poppers - itâs just more washed out and faded than Eddies have been. This is a deliberate choice - to contrast him with Eddie and also with himself - the washed out nature of the shirt is likely intentional - the black shirt he wore in 805 was not washed out, so this suggests he is both a washed out faded version of Eddie, but also that he is fading out of Bucks life - its all subtle, but in combination, all these small things add up to help with the storytelling and are showing us that Tommy is not likely going to be around for too much longer!
The thing that Iâm most fascinated about with the black shirt though, is the fact he is located in the same place we saw a Eddie sitting in 705 - when he talks about having to break up with Marisol, and also where Buck comes out to him. Iâm really interested to see if we get a contrast between that scene with Eddie and this one with Tommy. A scene talking about a possible break up - and about just being friends and hanging with the boys and then showing Eddie being a super supportive friend seems like the perfect scene to use to continue to show the contrast between Eddie and Tommy. It perfectly builds on what Weâve already been seeing all season - this ever increasing space between Buck and Tommy and the very loud and clear way theyâre are showing how much Buck and Eddie know and trust and accept one another in comparison with the way Buck and Tommy clearly donât. Itâs one of the things I enjoyed most about 805 - the way they showed Tommy only really going near Buck when othered weâre present - then the distance started to grow as soon as he took up residence on the couch overnight - here we have a scene where it appears weâre going to get the vast space of the kitchen counter between them - it parallels the first kiss scene from 704 as well - in the opposite direction - especially interesting as it places Tommy near the door - a place weâve yet to see him near again since that first kiss in 704 - feels very much like weâre supposed to view it as him heading out of the door and out of Bucks life (remember they did a similar thing with Taylor in the build up to the break up and immediately after it!).
The other thing to point out is the brightness of the lighting - I know these are stills and so generally taken with a different camera and from a different angle, but the fact remains that the set is very brightly lit and it wonât darken that much with whatever filter they have on the camera, so the brightness of the loft when Tommy is there compared with when Eddie is there is pretty telling - the starkness versus the intimate low lighting - the coolness of Tommy versus the warmth of Eddie.
Hope this is interesting for you and that you enjoy it. I canât wait to see how the scenes play out - How close to the money I am on things and getting to see what direction theyâre taking things! Thanks for the ask!

âĽď¸Reveling in Richonne - TOWL
#10: The Burning (1.01)
gif cred: @nerd4music
I guess it really is true that some things have to burn to be brought back. đ Cuz Rick's helicopter had to come tumbling down in flames to finally bring our lovelies together again for their fantastic reunion. So thank you, Fire. đ And these final moments of episode one were just that - fire đĽ...
After the final dream-turned-nightmare, there's a time jump to âNowâ as Rick pilots the helicopter and Okafor sits alongside him. Okafor thanks Rick for taking them up the coast and says he likes the way he flies. Rick doesnât really respond so Okafor says itâs hard to tell if thereâs anything on his mind because he rarely speaks these days. Itâs yet another indicator that Rick really has been living life like heâs the walking dead for the past year.Â
It's painful that the CRM didnât just take home from him. They took himself from him. Especially because through Michonne, Rick found himself, a stronger more whole version of himself at that. And he would say in a heartbeat that sheâs his better half and so they took the better half of himself from him, now leaving him as just a shell of who he was.
gif cred: @clonecaptains
Then in another excellently acted moment from Andy he recounts an impactful canon-event story from Rickâs youth and I love getting to learn more about Rickâs childhood.
Itâs also interesting that heâs willing to open up to Okafor and tell this story. I think it shows how while Rick still is very shut down and doesnât let anyone in close, heâs at least a bit less resistant to Okafor than before. It's almost like the CRM has tamed the beast and he's accepted being caged by them.
Rick says, âIâve been thinking about this night when I was a kid. 7 years old.â And I like that we get to hear a story specifically from a time when Rick was the same age that his son RJ is now. Rickâs own 7-year-old is also gonna have a canon event at this age when his dad basically comes back from the dead and enters his life. đĽš
Rick shares about a night when he was 7 and thirsty and couldnât sleep so he went to get some water. He describes his house as old with squeaky floorboards and says he was trying not to wake his family. We get to see the house and it has some Hershelâs farm vibes. Maybe I missed it in TWD but I never knew Rick was a farmer's son, but it makes total sense. It also made it make even more sense why he took so well to Hershel as a father figure in s3 and s4.
Rick recalls being on the stairs and seeing an orange light and realizing their crops were burning. He says, âI was so scared, I couldnât move.â Rick continues, âThen my dad was there. He looked like a monster. Half his body was burnt. But he was there to get me out.â
I feel like this gives insight into so much about Rick. It sounds like he def takes after his dad and his dadâs willingness to do anything for his family even if it makes him appear like a monster. What most comes to mind hearing this is the season 4 finale and how Rick went to a dark place to protect Carl against those Claimers. Rick would do anything for his kids and wife just like his dad.Â
Rick continues, âHe said I didnât need to be scared. That it was just the burning.â Interestingly, when Carl first saw his dad look like a âmonsterâ Rick didnât have to be the one to tell him he didnât have to be scared because his co-parent and Carlâs bff Michonne was the one to tell Carl exactly that in a beautiful bonding moment between them in the s4 finale.
And I always appreciate that s4 scene for how it strengthened Michonne and Carl's bond and also for how it showed Michonne understood Rick on such a deep level that she was never afraid of the 'monster' he can tap into. (If anything that side of Rick is something she recognized in herself and it was also something that contributed to her falling in love with him đ)
gif cred: @thewalkingdeadgifs
Rick says his dad explained that the flames were actually protecting the plants for the next harvest. So even if it looked like it was an act of destruction it was actually an act of protection which very much is meant to illustrate how Rick views his own sacrifice and burnings as an act of protecting Michonne and Judith.
Rickâs dad told him, âIt may look like the end of the world, but itâs only just the beginning.â And again that colors Rickâs own perspective since the start of the apocalypse. He chose to believe in new beginnings and hope even at the literal end of the world.Â
I like that Rick describes his dad as âso certainâ and âso steadyâ because I feel like those are qualities Rick tried to have in his kids' eyes as well. He says his dadâs certainty and steadiness made Rick feel calm and he says, âI believed him.â (A certain other 7-year-old boy is gonna express belief in his dad at the end of the series too. đ)
Itâs interesting too because I definitely think Rick is a character that suffers from anxiety. He fights hard to not let it get the best of him and to be steady but sometimes anxiety can understandably hit him hard. It sounds like his dad was someone who could calm him and now I adore the way Michonne is the one in his life who can always beautifully calm him too.Â
Okafor asks if Rickâs dad survived and Rick says his dad was okay and the situation was okay. They got a new barn and new house and the crops flourished more than ever. For me, this childhood story gave a clear sign that Rick was going to get a happy ending after all the burning heâs had to do as well.
gif cred: @perryabbott
Rick then says that years later after his dad died (which made me wonder if he and Michonne both lost their parent around the same age since so much in their journeys is similar) his mom told him that his dad was actually the one who lit the fire because the farm was gonna fail âand what he did saved it. He saved us.â
Rick says he was rocked by the news because he thought his dad was the most honest man he knew. I feel like learning this about his dad showed Rick that not only do things sometimes have to burn, but sometimes you have to be the one to burn them.Â
Rickâs mom said that what his dad did wasnât right but the way his dad saw it the scars and the pain was just a reminder that âhe saved us.â This story gives a lot of insight into not just Rickâs backstory but his current mindset. When he looks at his amputated arm or all the scars heâs got from his escapes, when he looks at himself trapped in that black CRM uniform, he too tries to see it as a reminder that heâs saving his wife and daughter, even if itâs killed him inside to be apart from them.Â
As Rick concludes the story he looks at Okafor and says with certainty in his tone, âIâm in.â Officially letting Okafor know heâs going to dedicate himself to his mission.
gif cred: @riickgrimes
Hearing this was a gut punch because Rick had fought so hard for so long to not conform to anything regarding the CRM and now heâs fully accepted his fate here.
Okafor looks into his eyes and seems to see that Rick is sincere about this. Even tho Rickâs face as he turns away does suggest that itâs another moment of swallowing defeat.
Okafor says itâs been a good year and that he knows Rick is the right thing for this force and for his plan. Okafor says, âNo more As and Bs and Omahasâ and then he gets honest with Rick saying he still doesnât know how itâs all going to play out. But I knew đđ˝ââď¸. He threatened Michonne so I knew this was bound to play out with Okafor at some point meeting his demise.
...What I didn't know was that his demise would occur in the next five seconds. đŤ˘
Okafor says heâs gonna tell Rick another secret as he shares, âwhen you get to that pointâŚswear on the sword. Donât let it take.â And hearing 'sword' I was like now I know thereâs only one sword Rick would want to swear his allegiance to and itâs a katana.
gif cred: @perryabbott
Okafor tells Rick, âYouâll know. Trust me youâll know.â about Rick knowing the right choice to make when confronted with swearing on the sword during Beale's briefing. But itâs interesting that Okafor, despite wanting to go against Beale, still tells him to swear on the sword. To me, it shows a difference between Rick and Okafor.
Okafor will swear on the sword and play the part of doing heinous things for the CRM until he can change things, whereas as we see in the finale, Rick will shut that CRM stuff down before ever fully giving in and swearing on the sword. He already knows the real sword that gives him life and it ainât Beales.Â
So speaking of MichonneđâŚ
gif cred: @rcsitastark
It's quite poetic that mere seconds after Rick is about to officially be in with Okafor, Michonne unknowingly lets her husband know 'no you most certainly are not in' as she's about to literally and figuratively help him get out. Like Rick being 'in' did not last long, honey. đ
And Michonne always was the one who could most ground Rick, so itâs only fitting that in this moment sheâs helping quite literally bring him back down to earth. Without even knowing it, Michonne basically said the only thing that man Rick Grimes is 'in'âŚis in love with her, and Okafor and all those CRM people better recognize lol.
Also, how crazy is it that Okafor had survived so much throughout all these years of being in the military and in an apocalypse and then the second heâs even in the same atmosphere as Michonne, he meets his end? đ¤ Should have kept her name out of his mouth because Iâm telling you it never ends well for anyone who comes for her. She didnât even have to meet the man before she and her bestie took out the man.Â
gif credit: @andy-clutterbuck
So Okafor is cut off as we get this shocking and riveting action sequence. Something whooshes into the helicopter and pierces Okafor, causing him to bleed from the mouth and the helicopter to rock. I like how just from the sound effect I could tell that this was a similar weapon to one we saw Michonne use in the TOWL trailer.
And yâall, I really was not expecting a Richonne reunion to arrive in episode 1 so I just thought Michonne was near but wouldn't be seen yetâŚbut not only is the real Michonne near, honey, sheâs about to make her grand TOWL entrance and of course, the queen enters with a bang. đ (A bang that nearly kills her husband before they can reunite tho đŹ. But Richonne is blessed and highly favored so it worked out. đ)
gif cred: @taiturner
Also, I always think itâs funny how the very normal everyday setting of Rickâs park dreams just sitting on a bench with Michonne talking about work and joking about pizzas is actually the imagined stuff and then Michonne and her bestie explosively attacking Rickâs helicopter and shooting it down is the reality despite being the far more extreme and intense scenario. It's a reminder that our favorite love story takes place in a wild apocalypse.
When Okafor is first hit, Rick calls out orders and then things get even wilder as Okafor then explodes all over the place. TOWL really said we gon' get crazy so...
Rick reports that Okafor has been KIA and says heâs defending west when another hit rocks the helicopter. Andy does a great job conveying the genuine fear and terror Rick feels as he says âWeâre taking fire. Oh god. Weâre taking fire.â A crash like that is terrifying. Because it doesnât matter how good a survivor you are, thereâs not much you can do. But Rick still tries to do what he can.
And then the helicopter gets hit yet again and I was like dang these attackers arenât playing around. đ You could just tell this attack was personal because they were gunning this helicopter down not once, not twice, but three times.Â
It was insane to see such a calm moment between Rick and Okafor end with Okaforâs blood splattered everywhere, including all over Rick.
gif cred: @vidco
The helicopter comes crashing down and Rick is rocked. But again because heâs a leader and an A to his core, he manages to gather himself enough to take over and give orders to the others as they prepare to engage. Which again is such crazy circumstances because just surviving a regular crash would be a lot to deal with and now they have to immediately be ready for an attack on the ground.
gif cred: @andy-clutterbuck
Rick and co grab their guns and hit the PRB (which those PRBs will cause some serious complications in this show). More missiles hit the soldiers as Rick and the soldiers fire shots back. And again, these attackers did not come to play cuz they were shooting missile after missile at these uniformed guys.Â
gif cred: @taiturner
The blast from one missile knocks Rick and some soldiers to the ground.
And then in a moment of absolute cinema, Rick starts crawling on the leafy ground as feet approach in the background.
gif cred: @nat111love
Sheâs here!!!! đđ¤Šđđ¤Šđ
I remember watching this moment on premiere day and being like are you serious Iâm about to see my beloved real Michonne right now??? đŤ˘đ Like this was truly live footage of my brain watching this moment on premiere day...
Again, I was so not expecting a Richonne reunion to happen in the first episode so I was shocked in the very best way. Seeing that mysterious lethal person in the back taking soldiers out - who else could it be but the baddest chick in the game. đđ˝ââď¸Â
So Michonne is slicing these soldiers one by one in the background and Rick even has a brief moment looking back but all he can do is just crawl away. But not fast enough, because Michonne then starts to make her way over to him.
Rick tries to grab a gun but Michonne approaches and kicks it out of his hand. Itâs crazy how Richonneâs first physical contact in almost eight years is through combat and they donât even know it. Then Michonne swings her sword but Rick blocks it with his prosthetic. I guess that is one way that cutting off his hand really paid off. Cuz if he hadnât had that prosthetic, Michonne would have made him an amputee anyway.
And this was a wild moment of seeing Rick on the wrong end of Michonneâs sword. Itâs crazy how many times Michonne and Rick could have accidentally killed each other in their first moments together here. đŹ But fortunately the universe is a Richonner and watched out for them. đ
So then Michonne kicks Rick in the face and he lies on the ground *helpless* with no choice but to accept his fate really. Like Rick truly does look like he's surrendered to this being the end of the line for him.
The first thing Michonne says to Rick after years is a stern âGet upâ as she yanks him up to face her, not realizing sheâs speaking to the love of her life.
gif cred: @riickgrimes
Rick looks up at her and yâall I love the staging of this because itâs hot and intense and most of all because the last time we saw Richonne in a private moment together, it was similar positioning.
In their final beautiful goated private scene in 9.03 - my favorite TWD Richonne scene - it ended with Rick looking up at Michonne as she was on top of him. And now years later theyâre back in a similar position...although under a very different context.Â
So Michonne yanks the helmet off this last soldier so she can get to his neck and kill him. But as she places a sword to his neckâŚshe sees his face. đ At long last she sees Rick's face. đ Ahhhhhh!! 𼳠The reunion weâd all been waiting for was here!!!!!
gif cred: @riickgrimes
Shocked to realize that the man in the black uniform is her long-lost love, Michonne steps back with eyes wide and fixed on Rick as we finally see her face in her armor.Â
gif cred: @riickgrimes
Equally in shock, Rick just sits and stares at Michonne for a while, possibly convinced that heâs 'seeing things' again. I love the quietness of the moment as all we hear is the two's breathing. It low-key feels like their slowly but surely breathing in sync like one organism again.
After all my years of imagining what the moment would be like when Richonne finally lays eyes on each other for the first time again, it was euphoric to now see that moment arrive.
gif cred: @riickgrimes
Michonne removes her mask and I like how sheâs the one to remove both their masks at this moment. It feels symbolic of the way she'll figuratively remove their masks throughout TOWL. Because her vulnerability is going to help Rick reconnect with his own vulnerabilities and bring him back to who he really is underneath the CRM gear and mental damage.Â
gif cred: @riickgrimes
Michonne stares at Rick on the ground, emotional and taken aback. Then the episode powerfully ends with Rick staring back at her, really looking like heâs wondering if heâs died and gone to the afterlife.
And then just before the ep quickly fades to black I feel like you see the subtlest shift in his expression as Rick realizes no this is real. The love of his life is really here. đ
gif cred: @riickgrimes
All this time Rick had only considered scenarios where heâd get back to her but now he finally gets to learn that his soulmate was out there trying her hardest to get back to him too. đĽš
I am so extremely grateful to Andy and Danai for one; coming back to the franchise to give Richonne's story closure and two; for having the reunion take place in the first episode.
And what they came up with for their first moments on screen together in real life was truly epic and riveting. They killed it.đĽđđ˝đĽ
When creating stories it's always most effective to pick the best characters to show up and interact with each other who will propel the story forward. Like in TWD season 4 when they all split from the prison and Tyrese is with those little girls, who is the most interesting character that could reunite with Tyrese and the girls? Carol.
So one of the millions of reasons itâs perfect that it was Michonne who found Rick and went on the quest to bring him back is because Rick had basically lost all hope and buried himself. And so the best character for him to spend this miniseries with was always going to be the one person who can make him come alive and bring him back no matter how lost he becomes. The person who loves and believes in him like no other.
Rick was losing crucial parts of himself and so he most needed his wife, the other half of himself, to arrive and help put the pieces back together like only she could.
He, as always, needed Michonne. And Michonne needed him too. đ
However, while Michonne is physically in front of Rick here in these woods, it'll now be quite the journey to truly find her Rick.
The end of episode one made me super eager to see how the rest of their reunion would play out. And also to see how Michonne got here. And thankfully episode 2 would answer all of that and answer it beautifully.
To conclude these TOWL premiere revelings, I just have to say this was such a strong opener to the show. I absolutely loved "Years" and every actor was excellent. đđ˝ I was put through every possible emotion and so moved by this hour of television. With "Years" the TOWL train had kicked off with a bang in every way.
And the ride was only just beginning. đđđ˝

My Favorite Portia Featherington Moments
Throughout all three seasons of Bridgerton, Portia Featherington has been a complicated character. On the surface, she's completely unlikeable. She treats Penelope poorly. Her fashion sense is excessively gaudy. And she seems either unaware or willfully ignorant of the social faux pas she makes from day to day.
But she is also a survivor who was dealt a shit hand in life with her useless husband. And she did what she had to do to ensure the safety and well-being of her daughters in desperate times. So here are a few of my favorite Portia moments.
10- Showing Marina What Her Future Holds
When Portia finds out that Marina is pregnant, her first instinct is to protect her girls and her family's reputation. She wants to send Marina away and back to the country but she can't because of her useless husband's dealings. George hasn't answered Marina's letter telling him about her condition. Without knowing that George's fate has already been sealed, Marina's insistence that George will come for her seems naive--especially to Portia.
When Marina refuses to even entertain the idea of being married off quickly to an older man in need of an heir who won't ask too many questions, Portia, like the Ghost of Christmas Future, shows Marina what her life will be if she continues to hold out for George.
It's a much-needed wake-up call but it does not work on Marina. The forged letter may have seemed cruel at the time, but if I were in Portia's shoes, I would have assumed the worst of George, too.
9- Confronting Her Husband
When Lord Featherington puts a premature end to the courtship between Albion Finch and his middle daughter Philippa, Portia is outraged. A man has taken an interest in one of their daughters, seems besotted with her, and wants to marry her. What possible objections could there be?
When she tries to press him for answers in public, Lord Featherington uses his position as a man and a husband to silence her. But when Portia uncovers that he has gambled away all of their money--including their daughters' dowries--her husband is revealed for the sniveling coward that he is. Outside of the eyes of society, he is a weak man who can't curtail his vices even for the well-being and future of his family.
They may not like each other, but even Portia wasn't expecting this level of betrayal from her husband.
Cry those crocodile tears, Archibald! I don't feel sorry for you whatsoever. I'm Team Portia on this one.
8- "You find things to love, my dear."
Even a blind man could tell that Portia and Archibald were not a love match. She married him for security and he failed to even provide that. But she managed to find silver linings in the many clouds of her marriage.
Her talk with Marina in the final episode of season 1 gives the audience more insight into the kind of woman Portia is and how strong she had to be to endure her marriage with her late husband for so long. It's the kindest and most motherly we've seen her be all season. And her talk gives Marina the final push she needs to do what needs to be done to protect her babies.
Portia, as we'll see, is better off without her deadbeat husband. She has more strength than she gave herself credit for in this scene. And she has the three best things her husband gave her by her side.
7- "I am a MOTHER."
After the death of Archibald, the Featherington women are in financial stasis until the new Lord Featherington finally shows up. When Cousin Jack finally arrives some things are starting to look up. But he is making some questionable decisions right off the bat.
Portia is, once again, at the mercy of a Featherington man who makes piss-poor financial decisions when Cousin Jack comes into the picture.
She navigates the situation as best as she can, even getting into his fraudulent gemstone scheme when she's backed into a corner with no way out. Desperate times, desperate measures.
After Colin uncovers the scheme and Cousin Jack proposes not only running away from the country, but even leaving Prudence and Penelope behind and sending for them later, Portia has had enough. If you think this woman would ever seriously consider abandoning her daughters to save her own skin, then you don't know her at all.
Portia doesn't always make the right decisions. Portia doesn't always say the right things. Portia is far from a perfect mother. But she'll ALWAYS choose her daughters over mediocre men who only care for themselves, and for that, I'll love her forever for showing Cousin Jack the door.
6- Sex-Ed With Philippa and Prudence
The moment Philippa said that she and Albion were "very passionate" I KNEW that we were in for some comedic gold.
And I was RIGHT.
At first, Portia thinks her biggest problem with the Featherington Heir Race is Prudence. But at least she can relate to Prudence's problem of not enjoying the marital act. Poor Portia's not even aware that it can be enjoyable for both parties.
But to her horror, BOTH of her married daughters are the problem. Prudence isn't having sex because she doesn't like it and Philippa isn't having sex because she has no idea what it is.
You can see the wheels turning in both Prudence's and Portia's heads when Philippa asks that infamous question.
If Lady Featherington went home that night and screamed into her pillows, I wouldn't blame her.
5- Chaperoning Polin
Portia's finally realized that she's been a little lax with chaperoning Penelope over the years. No matter, she'll make up for it now and chaperone her daughter when her fiancee comes for a visit!
Colin and Penelope are just not used to having a chaperone and they have no idea how to conduct themselves with one in the room. Colin looks downright annoyed every time he sees Portia out of the corner of his eye. Penelope's staring at his lips the whole time and probably wants Colin to compromise her again right there on the window seat.
But the real comedy of this scene is knowing that Penelope is already pregnant. So the chaperoning was too little, too late.
4- Finally Bonding With Violet
For most of the series, Portia and Violet have gotten along like oil and water. They're not great friends like Penelope, Colin, and Eloise. They don't hang out at social events. Portia is envious of the Bridgertons and their social clout. Violet barely tolerates Portia on a good day. And as much as Violet loves Penelope, you can tell in 3x05 and 3x06 that she's not looking forward to having Portia as an in-law.
But when Colin and Penelope are on the outs just before their wedding, the two mothers have finally found some common ground.
3- Handling Lady Whistledown
I was not expecting Cressida to actually tell Portia that Penelope was Lady Whistledown. I thought she'd make a vague comment that Penelope would have to play off as nothing and then she would work with Colin and Eloise to overcome the Cressida threat.
But no, Cressida really tells Portia.
The threat of Cressida's blackmail hanging over her daughter's head and what this could mean for the Polin marriage is enough for Portia's protective mother instincts to kick in and she teams up with Colin and Eloise to find a solution and protect Penelope.
And she gets extra brownie points from me because one of her first reactions to learning about Whistledown is to point out that Penelope was the one to write horrible things about herself. ("The things you wrote! About your family! About yourself!")
Yes, Portia's angry about Penelope's secret and what she's done as Whistledown, but she puts that anger on the back burner for a short time while she tries to navigate her family through their latest crisis. To paraphrase what she said to Cousin Jack at the end of last season: she and Penelope are on the same team.
2- Portia and Penelope Finally Talk
Portia might have put her anger to the side when she found out about Whistledown, but it returns when Penelope finds out that Portia kept the money Cousin Jack had embezzled from the ton.
Portia and Penelope finally have it out and mother and daughter realize that they are more alike than they had previously realized or were even willing to admit.
1- Portia as a Grandmother
Portia started out the season anxious that none of her daughters would have a son and secure their family's future. By the end of the season, she's a grandmother to two granddaughters and one grandson--the new Lord Featherington. Her family's future is finally secure at last.
Now that she has her grandchildren, Portia will finally be able to relax a little. It must have been hard being in survival mode for so long. Now she can enjoy her life and watch all three of her daughters have marriages filled with love and happiness.

thoughts on the presence of mariusâ painting in dubai in the show? ive been thinking about this since episode 7 aired because louis threw a bowl of blood at a painting in one scene which wasnât mariusâ, yet made me think it should have been. but its interesting that its there at all? of course theyâre art collectors and dealers in 2022 but god. i feel like the painting might end up being a chekovâs gun. it cant be there for nothing, right?
(also the scene of ârashidâ armand in s1 telling daniel about it keeps coming back. how did he FEEL about that especially if daniel is indeed someone he loves and has loved for years)
AHHH OMG!!! LOVE THIS QUESTION!! Iâve been thinking about this constantly since s1, which believe it or not spurned some theories about Armandâs relationship with Louis that ended up being surprisingly accurate đ. I canât tell u how many times I rewatched the Rashid-mand tells Daniel about mariusâs painting scene before s2 aired (definitely more than any other scene in the first season đđ). Ughhh!! omg!! U r so right đđ the painting Louis threw the blood at should have been Mariusâs. The thematic implications!!! The impact!! The way Armand would feel!! Itâs making me crazy thinking about it
I speculate that Armand is trying to seek out and reclaim as many of Mariusâs painting as possible. I imagine that Armand acquired the painting in the dining room by searching intently for any paintings of Mariusâs that survived the fire. Part of him likely feels entitled to them. Legally heâs just Mariusâs slave, but the way he sees it itâs so much deeper than that. Marius is his father, his husband. He should be given his possessions, his works of art, after heâs died. And I think the fact that Armand, by both historical records, and by anyone he knows, will always be viewed as Mariusâs slave, his victim, before he is Mariusâs closest loved one, feels disempowering and invalidating. Technically, if they werenât vampires and legal consideration was given to who Mariusâs possessions should be given to after his death, as a slave Armand likely wouldnât be considered. But, Armand believes that because of the role Marius had in his life, he is rightfully owed that inheritance. And the symbolic value of that fact is important to him.
I think sometimes the show fandom doesnât realize how attached to Marius Armand actually is đ. If theyâre going by the books, Armand is longing for Marius and for Venice. Marius is the love of his life the same way Lestat is the love of Louisâs life (maybe even more so considering heâs not just his lover but his father đ Marius played every major role in Armandâs life, he was his father, his lover, his maker and his god). Armand is stuck on him, he is always longing for him, never able to move on. So I think for Armand owning paintings of Mariusâs is partly an assertion and a reclamation of the way he perceives his relationship with him. By owning them and displaying them on his wall, not only is he allowing himself to live with a comforting reminder of Venice (which Iâll get to), but hes also asserting that Marius loved him, and he was important to Marius, and he deserves to and is entitled to owning his paintings after Marius has died because he is the person who these things should go to, he is displaying that he is the most important person to Marius, that he is the person who would be in his will.
on the Venice note, Armand is also indulging in a small little fantasy by putting Mariusâs paintings on his wall. He lived with those paintings, his father likely painted them while he was in the room. He saw them in the halls in the palazzo, maybe even in his lavish old dining room. In the books Venice was and continues to be Armandâs perceived âbest part of his lifeâ. Venice was his childhood, the only time in his life he remembers being taken care of, well fed, spoiled, loved. And from our perspective it was horrible, he was being sexually abused and beaten regularly, literally pimped out and enslaved. But think about how Armand told his story to Louis, he was smiling wistfully, longing despite it all. And I think even in Dubai Armand misses Venice, feels comforted by the memory of it. So it makes sense that he would hang Mariusâs painting on the wall, as a small comfort, so that maybe sometimes he can stare at it and picture he is back there, in his masterâs studio, basking in the sunlight, loved.
The scene where Armand as Rashid shows the painting to Daniel is so so loaded. Daniel initiates the conversation, but Armand definitely indulges in it more than he needs to. That scene is the first time we rlly see Armand using his Rashid persona to tap into his past. He says, âI serve a God, itâs my honor to serveâ which is fucking weird đ and no one but Armand would say that (real rashid wouldnâtđ he definitely sees the vampires in a way that is more grounded and empathy based then god like). Heâs clearly tapping into how he felt as Amadeo, a servant to Marius, rather than playing his part. It seems like Daniels interest in the painting and him talking about + bringing attention to it brought Armand back to that Venice mindset in a way. Even with this, heâs definitely pushing Daniel away, trying to change the topic as quickly as possible while remaining in character. Which makes me think that Armand wasnât happy at the prospect of being so vulnerable with Daniel so soon. The impression I get (especially from season one) is that despite his past and current love for him, Armand sees a different person in old Daniel, and is very hesitant to open himself up to him. Considering how different (and mean) he is, and how painful and loaded their past was, itâs a very hard thing for Armand to approach, and it doesnât seem currently on his agenda.
What I rlly am curious about is how Louis feels about Armand keeping Mariusâs paintings in their home, displaying them on their wall. I imagine it would be uncomfortable for him, if not upsetting, in a similar way to how Armand feels about the presence of ghost Lestat, if not more complicated with the layer of how extremely abusive Marius was. But how can Louis judge? Who is he to give push back on smth like this when he is still actively hallucinating his dead, abusive ex husband đđthereâs a lot going on there.
I rlly hope this painting thing gets explored in depth bcus omg I can not stop thinking about it either. Thank u SO MUCH for the ask I love this topic so much omg!!! Hope my response scratches the painting itch in ur brain<3

Hi, I put this anonymous so it would let me ask from my 911 account instead of my main account. I wanted to ask a question about your yellow and blue color code post.
"They're also in the wrong colors during the will reveal, which is interesting if they follow through it this particular symbolism the way I'm expecting them to."
Do you think the colors are wrong or connected in any way with the original intention of bringing both Eddie and Buck out of the closet post 4.13 and 4.14? Further, do you think that they also originally intended Eddie to come out first in season 7 may have played a role in the wrong colors?
Asking from @justchillandshipit
link to the meta in question
Hi, darling! Yes for the first one, not exactly for the second one. They have been playing with Buck and Eddie and blue and yellow in the background since under pressure, so the will reveal is deliberately blue and yellow and I believe it is because of the romantic connotations surrounding the aborted love confession that conversation is.
I was actually thinking about making a post about this, so thank you, because during the will reveal Buck is in a yellow that's close to the shade I expect Eddie to reach. They are basically the same color.
That's not true for the blue, but I believe that the choice to make Buck's blue closer to the color of Oliver's eyes to make that particular shot as harmonic as it is affected the shade and made it a bit more teal than expected, because it is close to the blue Buck is wearing during 706, that is the second part of Buck's coming out.
So I believe they are intentionally switched during the will reveal, because while that is a major movement, it's not the climax of the situation, is the setup. They aren't really saying what they need to get together. So I think the plan has always been Buck as blue and Eddie as yellow.
I also think that because Buck in general is a lot more blue than Eddie, so the color feels a lot more natural on Buck than it does on Eddie. There's also the way that they use that burnt yellow color with Buck. Especially the therapy connotations, I feel like it was supposed to be used as a discovery color, but not as the destination color, so Buck would reach the blue anyway, just through a different route.
And if we consider the locker room scene as something that stayed the way they intended when the plan was for Eddie to come out first, they could've made Buck yellow anyway, because the way they used the sun on Eddie could've easily been done with Buck, and he's already yellow in this context, they could've just kept building on it. They decided against it, and I think it's because that was never something they wanted to go that way.
But actually my major proof here, is actually the couch theory dinner in 601. Because assuming a bunch of things, including that they knew s6 was gonna be their last season with fox, and that they were gonna try and force fox to let them get them together before the show ended and they changed plans once abc bought the show and gave them the space to do it with the full glory, I feel like Buck's blueish grey and Eddie's yellowish cream are on purpose and the base of the beginning of the color theory with them, especially because all signs of the couch pointed to Eddie.
I feel like if they were allowed to do what they wanted with s6 with the threat of cancelation but without someone on fox telling them they couldn't, buddie would move to the brighter color together, since there would be no time for them to do two separate queer arcs. In this world, the lighting actually triggers something, and they get together during the s6 finale, which would be the series finale, bringing the conclusion to this conversation during the closing arc.
But the switch to abc allowed them to expand on that more, and now we are here. I think the colors are supposed to be switched while they are on the wrong path, and that was always the plan.

Some controversial thoughts about the Peachyville Horror
I've been seeing how everyone is reacting to Francis's moment in the bathroom in this latest episode (episode 7) and I thought I might as well add one more.
Francis is someone who is mentally unstable, yes. I think this is something we can all agree with. He's surrounded by people who seem to either enable his actions in one way or another or they're on a list of people he keeps which we can only assume is something like a hit list. He's been looked down on by his parents, bullied by his peers, and generally just beat down by everyone around him including himself at this point. Then he won that trophy. That's where everything shifts. He's the one to take it home and it's obvious that by how Will was describing that trophy, something about it had negative energy.
â ď¸Now I get into some gory details in this next part so fair warning â ď¸
Now, Francis had his dream and suddenly became violent to an extent that he would joke about it and people would feel threatened. Relistening to episode 5, he threatened a man after scooping his eyes out with an ice cream scoop by kicking him in the balls and then grabbing his eyeballs and threatening to squeeze them. Now, I get it this is a horror comedy podcast but if we are gonna analyze a character I'm taking everything into account and really this is the first and really an extremely violent thing for a person to do, especially when this is the first actions he's been known to take.
Getting the gun and instantly he seemed to know exactly what he "needed" to do. On a dime, the Francis we knew just a few episodes ago was already so different.
Now that brings us to the bathroom scene. People have been saying it was a mental "snap" or "break" which doesn't line up, like how most others have pointed out that this was something that was premeditated. He planned out this whole thing and followed through with it. And to those who think he did this so Shane wouldn't bother him anymore, he didn't see Francis at all through the whole attack, which yes, Francis could go back and claim he did it but I still this it's important to note we don't know if Shane will believe him.
That being said, with every increasingly violent act that Francis had done up to that point it made sense within the confines of his world. It was in his character that things have played out this way so far. And really I think it's going to make for a really interesting character arc. He isn't going to to be a character that we have seen before, which when we just had a season of teens that were just coming into themselves Anthony is getting his chance to get his character in, and it is a horror series. This doesn't make any of the actions acceptable by any means and this should not encourage people to romanticize any of the actions he does. There is a way to like a character and not romanticize their actions, some of these posts remind me of posts of people romanticizing real murderers and shooters, which is rather disturbing.
TLDR
Francis suddenly got violent after bringing the trophy home, having a dream after being under his teacher's bed for 4 hours, and now he's suddenly he's on a bloody rampage and those around him are either enablers or in his line of fire and that's an interesting new character to think about. But don't romanticize that shit.
Extra
⢠Another idea I saw floating around was that Francis got switched with his reflection in the trophy, which I love the idea of this one. It can keep the idea of mental health slightly but it brings the story back into it. But, I understand that even without evil trophies, people like Francis exist in our world.
⢠Also having him practice with his bully's face as the target was really the warning. I personally didn't know the scene was going to be that graphic but now looking back I get the horror side of the podcast now. As someone who lives in America it was something that shocked me the first time listening to it, knowing that the usual stuff that the guys bring up I can laugh off. This scene most definitely felt different and I'm sure that it's going to be a huge turning point for a lot of things.

ok I am in fact using this as an excuse to make a long post about this thank you thank you asjksdjfaljdf
---
Interpreting Yuri as asexual is my very very favorite type of headcanon, which is one that 1. is compellingly coded in the source material (even if that wasn't the creator's intent), 2. is thematically relevant to what the piece of media is Trying To Do as a whole, and 3. just means a lot to me, personally, because I said so.
Coded in the source material
Yuriâs short program is âerosâ, aka desire (you can interpret what âerosâ means in various ways, but YOI itself explicitly refers to sexual love, at least in the English translations). Yuri struggles with this. Hard. He canât come up with an answer when asked what eros means to him. His big revelatory moment about desire is that itâs how he feels about wanting to eat his favorite food (omg⌠boy). Even as the season goes on and the way he views the Eros program changes, the program doesnât ever really embody the idea of eros as sexuality or romance (which was how the other characters expect him to interpret it) but rather as a desire to keep Victor in his life.
Like look. Iâm obviously not going to say that the creator intended any kind of ace subtext to be there. I kind of doubt it was her intent. But goddamn is the subtext there.
2. Thematic relevance
The central theme throughout YOI is âloveâ, and especially loving people in a way that inspires you both to be your best selves: Yuri learning that the people in his life truly love and support him; Victor finding someone who makes him feel joy about skating again.
Like, Yuriâs whole skating theme for the Grand Prix is literally about him exploring what love looks like to him, even when it takes a form that other people donât totally understand. Viewing all this through a lens of him being ace is really compelling. It adds depth to the idea of learning how to express the way you feel love even when it looks different than what other people expect. I think itâs a really delicious layer that adds even more nuance to what the show is getting at.
Besides, itâs an interesting way of viewing the criticism of the show that occurred for it not being 100% explicit about them being a couple (aka people getting mad because the kiss in ep 7 is blocked by Victorâs arm lmaooo). Like, ok, did you see the ending scene of ep 9? Did you see ep 10??? They definitely, definitely love each other, in whatever way that means for them. Their relationship takes a form thatâs pretty different than the other way people in the show are going about romantic relationships, but that doesnât mean it isnât real for them. That is very much in line with the main themes of the show.
3. Means a lot to me
In the final scene of the penultimate episode, Yuri tells Victor that they should end their coaching relationship after the Grand Prix ends. This is because he thinks heâs holding Victor back, that Victor would be happier being free to go back to skating on his own instead of being Yuriâs coach. When I watched this (and, Iâll be honest, this is completely me projecting here) I REALLY interpreted this as an ace thing. I think itâs pretty easy to internalize the idea when youâre asexual that you just wonât be⌠enough, for other people. In my case I ended up a strong impulse to self-sabotage relationships because I would rather be the one to end things than to let someone else tell me that who I am as a person is fundamentally lacking. Yuri destroying a connection he desperately wants because he thinks thereâs something about him that is holding Victor back from a life heâd be truly happy with? Oh yeah. I can fucking relate to that.
Also: YOI came out in 2016, which was the absolute peak of hostility to ace people I was seeing on this site. It was bad here. At the same time Tumblr was going wild over this show. Everyone was watching it. Seeing a whole site of people absolutely adore a character I very deeply in my heart believed to be ace? Extremely vindicating.
---
In conclusion Yuri is asexual because it is fun and interesting that way, and also because of this:
#like it adds so much to the show if you view it through this lens! it's really good!#same reason for why I hc zuko as gay like ->#yeah ok you don't *have* to see it this way... but don't you want to live deliciously (in your media analysis)???#yoi#yuri on ice#thank u for giving me the excuse to finally post about this lol this has been building in my head for literally the last 8 years

The Penultimate Partner Episode: Analyzing the Second-to-Last Episodes of Seasons 3-7
So I was thinking about the showâs tendency to do an episode that is explicitly about the Partnershipâabout the deep abiding bonds between Mulder and Scullyâright before the season finale.
This doesnât seem to happen in season 1 and 2 (the penultimate episodes are Roland and Our Town, respectively, which donât seem to play the same role). And something different is happening in season 8 and 9, so I don't think they fit as well.
But during the showâs peak popularity, seasons 3-7, the second-to-last episode seems to be setting up baseline emotional stakes for whatever plotline is about to hit. These episodes are giving us the state of the partnership, reminding us how devoted they are to one another. They also tend to have to do with one or both partners having a distorted perception on reality that requires the other partner's intervention in some way. Iâm calling them the Penultimate Partner episodes.
So can we look at the themes of each of these Partnership episodes and see development over time? I think yes. Itâs gonna be long. I rewatched them all, so buckle up.
Season 3: Wetwired - partnership as trust Season 4: Demons - partnership as loyalty Season 5: Folie a Deux - partnership as shared madness Season 6: Field Trip - partnership as touchstones Season 7: Je Souhaite - partnership as happiness
Season 3: Wetwired (right before Talitha Cumi)
This episode, like several in the Penultimate Partner episode category, involves a X-file that distorts perception. Because Scully canât trust her own senses due to the mind control, she also canât trust Mulder, calling into question the key tenet of their partnership. (And by season three, they have definitely established trust as the bedrock.)
Her gradual mistrust of Mulder in this episode is tense and painful; you can see on her face how much she argues with herself about it even as her mind is tricking her. Others who fall victim to this mind control phenomenon wind up murdering their romantic partner, but in the end of the episode, when theyâre discussing what happened in the hospital, they both seem pretty unsurprised that Scullyâs paranoia focused on Mulder. They both know, late season three, how crucial trust is between them. They understand that itâs Scullyâs worst fear that Mulder would betray her. Itâs not even news to them.
What Mulderâs worst fear might be is also hinted at, although itâs unsaid. Heâs furious that her life is put at risk by the mysterious informant. When Mulder believes Scully may be dead and heâs going to identify her body, his reaction is chilling. He seems to completely shut down emotionally, not even showing any reaction to the Gunmen. Tellingly, when he is offered a choice between getting answers and going to ID Scullyâs body, he doesnât hesitateâhe chooses Scully. (Sometimes people claim Mulder doesnât show this kind of commitment to her until much later, even until Home Again in season 10, so itâs interesting to see it so unequivocal here.)Â Â Â
I want to say that Scullyâs anxiety about trusting Mulder in this episode is foreshadowing aspects of the cancer arc in the next season, but I donât think thatâs really whatâs happening. This episode seems more like an entirely season 3 cap to the Anasazi / Blessing Way / Paperclip storyline, especially the murder of Melissa. Scullyâs paranoia calls back Mulderâs in Anasazi, and Scully explicitly blames Mulder for her sisterâs murder when sheâs drawn a gun on him. Even just the fact that we're there with Maggie, who has a picture of Melissa displayed prominently, tells me that loss is supposed to be on both partners' minds. (Actually, the interaction between Mulder, Scully and Maggie is pretty amazing in this scene; theyâre an emotionally complex trio who seem to be communicating on some other level. I love how when Mulder and Maggie are talking to freaked-out Scully they almost sound strangely unreal, almost like they really are speaking falsely. It allows us to imagine the scene as it looks from Scullyâs point-of-view, as a massive betrayal.)
Wetwired is, technically, a mytharc episode, as this whole mind control thing seems to tie back into X and the Syndicate. Personally I think the episodeâs ending, emphasizing the mytharc-related plot and Xâs involvement and whatever tf was happening there, was a little misguided. For my tastes they would have done better to play up the more personal, character-based themes a little more. But I also think this episode was the first real Penultimate Partner episode, and it was setting some patterns that were going to be expanded on.
Season 4: Demons (before Gethsemane)
From the cold open, we can already tell this is already a more personal episode than Wetwired. Mulder is the one having perception problems now; he wakes from a disturbing dream, covered in blood, muddled memory. This is also technically a mytharc episode, but much more concerned with direct impact on character than Wetwired was.Â
Scully instantly rushes to Mulderâs aidâwalks right into his shower, for heavenâs sakeâand absolutely never wavers in loyalty to him, even when he looks real, real guilty and a "rational" person would be suspicious. She is in fierce, must-protect-Mulder mode throughout this entire episode, from the moment she shows up palpating his head with her hands to her back-off behavior with the cops to her badass cold âI know what you doâ comment to Dr. Goldstein. She also helps Mulder see through his distorted perception, telling him "this is not the way to the truth" as he holds a gun on her.
In this Penultimate Partner episode, we see something more than simple trust going on, although thereâs trust, too. Maybe the word is loyalty or devotion. We see Mulder coming apart and Scully completely and utterly devoted to him. Itâs actually very clear foreshadowing for the following weekâs episode, Gethsemane. Mulder isnât stable, and he needs Scully to keep him from âlos[ing] his course,â as she says in Demonsâ end narration. Gethsemane will follow up on the Mulder losing-his-course idea, and also will explore the idea that Scullyâs bottomless support of Mulder isnât always good for her. (This idea is voiced especially by Bill.)Â
There are some ways in which this episode is a neat little bookend to Wetwired. In Wetwired, Scully flees to her motherâs house, desperate and paranoid; in Demons, Mulder, similarly unhinged, seeks out his mother at her house. In Wetwired, Scully sees things that arenât there, and in Demons, itâs definitely implied that Mulder may be seeing things in his past that werenât actually there. In Wetwired, Scully pulls a gun on Mulder, and in Demons, Mulder pulls one on Scully.Â
I adore this episode, even though itâs definitely vulnerable to the critique that Mulder acts like a self-obsessed loon and Scully a hopeless enabler lol. Especially because it comes before the Gethsemane / Redux three parter, I wish the episode would have explicitly connected his behavior to the cancer arc, as I feel like that would have made his wild choices seem more understandable. If he felt like he needed to find answers faster because he knew Scullyâs time was running out and he saw it all tied together with her fate, then we would get why he was acting so rashly. It would also tie more nicely into Gethsemane, which misleads the audience into thinking Mulder has killed himself, in part, because he believes sheâs been given cancer to make him believe. But again, I love this episode. Scully showing up and putting that blanket around Mulder when heâs shaking. Her hugging him at the end when heâs desolate on the floor. This shows a partnership thatâs been through Paper Hearts and Memento Moriâthatâs moved beyond trust alone.
Season 5: Folie a Deux (before The End)
This is another episode about perceptionâabout one partner seeing things the other canât. Unlike in Wetwired or Demons, however, in this episode the altered perception actually represents the real truth, something everyone else fails to understand. The episode plays around with the tropes of earlier episodes like Wetwired, at first encouraging us to think that it's a delusion that Pincus is a monster, but then convincing us, through Mulderâs eyes, that the delusion is actually reality. Â
As other people have observed, this episode ends up being a nice little metaphor for the whole show: Mulder knowing what no one else does, being ostracized and considered insane, asking Scully to find evidence to corroborate him and ultimately convincing her to believe him and see what he sees. Their partnership is, quite precisely, a madness shared by two.Â
Itâs a monster of the week, not a mytharc, so thereâs no distraction of elaborate mytharc plot, just characters and monster. And this is a Vince Gilligan operation, so our focus is definitely on character. From the first scene with Mulder and Scully, we sense that weâre going to be talking about the partnership. Skinner gives them an assignment in Chicago that Mulder doesnât think is worth it, and he complains in a particularly self-centered way to Scully, which she observes (âYouâre saying I a lot.â) The episode is going to be very explicit that while Mulder might be monster boy, they are in this unhinged partnership situation together. Another important moment comes later, when Scully is calling the perp crazy for thinking he saw a monster, and Mulder says, âWell, I saw it, too.â Scullyâs careful about-face after that, her delicate avoidance of implying she thinks Mulder is actually crazy, is part of the dance theyâre doing at this late season five stage of their partnership. She doesnât quite believe him, but she doesnât knee-jerk not believe him either.Â
And the foreshadowing of whatâs to come in this one, whoo boy. Most obviously, we must acknowledge that 1013 knew exactly what they were doing when Mulder tells Scully âyouâre my one in five billion.â A mere seven days from now, a mysterious beautiful ex who believes his theories is going to show up to immediately cast doubt on that claim. And this episode is also toying with the question of whether Scully actually does always back Mulder up when itâs important, when she has to accept she saw something illogical. At the end, does she tell Skinner she actually saw a giant bug in Mulderâs hospital room? We donât know, but I think itâs implied she doesnât. Thatâs all presaging what will happen in The Beginning coming off of Fight the Future. Itâs Scullyâs little way of resisting the madness, but it also hurts Mulder and damages the partnership, which will be a problem in season six.Â
Season 6: Field Trip (before Biogenesis)
Full disclosure: this is my favorite episode. So Iâm going to make some big claims about it. This is the ultimate Penultimate Partner episodeâthe one that best knits together what it wants to say about their partnership and what it wants to establish for the finale. It's a monster-of-the-week episode (another Vince Gilligan ep, with John Shiban) but refers to the mytharc often. Itâs also one of the best episodes about their partnership, period.Â
This is yet another episode about distorted perception. This time, however, under the influence of a giant mushroom, both partners are unable to perceive clearly, to determine what is real and what is a lie. And when theyâre confused, they critically turn to one another to help them see what the truth is.
Coming off of season six, the partnership is rocky. Mulder is frustrated that after so many theories of his have borne out, he still canât get the benefit of the doubt from Scully, something he explicitly says in the dialogue here. Scully has felt like sheâs not been trusted or heard, like Mulder has turned to others (Diana Fowley, for example) rather than his partner.
This is an episode about how they absolutely need one another to be able to make sense of the worldâthat individually each of their points-of-view are not enough. In Mulderâs hallucination, Scully accepts his claims about alien life forms too completely, not applying enough skepticism, not pushing back against him. In Scullyâs hallucination, a world without Mulder, everyone is unacceptably unquestioning of the status quo, refusing to dig deeper, lacking Mulderâs critical acumen and drive. Neither partner likes the feeling of being unopposed, and it makes both of them suspicious about the hallucinationâs reality. They may think they want their own view to prevail, but they need one another to be a whole person.
The theme of whatâs real and whatâs not â and needing one another to discern the truthâis exactly what is picked up and developed further in the Biogenesis-Sixth Extinction-Amor Fati arc that follows this. Scullyâs skepticism has to stretch to incorporate more of Mulderâs worldview to make sense of what she sees in the Ivory Coast, and of course, Mulder calls on Scullyâs worldview to see through his misleading dream world in Amor Fati. In fact, you could argue Field Trip is really about the idea that Mulder and Scully are one anotherâs touchstonesâthe people they need to know whatâs right and real.Â
Incidentally, this episode also plays around with some of season 6âs other subtextual throughlines: Mulder and Scullyâs anxieties about possibly entering a non-platonic relationship, their unease about what a normal, domestic life might even be for them. For the entire episode theyâre directly compared and juxtaposed with the Schiffs, a young married couple who died on Brown Mountain. The Schiffs are a tall man and a redheaded woman. They even die hallucinating lying together on a hotel bed after she asked him to âhold herâ (although I do seriously doubt 1013 was intentionally foreshadowing a full year ahead). The last shot is of Mulder reaching out to take Scullyâs hand across the ambulance, suggesting a kind of partnership beyond just, you know, partnership. Which takes us to the next season. Â
Season 7: Je Souhaite (before Requiem)
Truthfully, I donât think this episode fits quite as well in the Penultimate Partner category. It doesnât share some of the same traits as these other episodesâitâs not quite as notably about perception, for instanceâand itâs not fundamentally about the partnership in the same way. But it does end up commenting on their partnership (even their relationship, really) as part of its theme, so I think we can include itâespecially because its position right before Requiem ends up being important.Â
Je Souhaite (btw, written and directed by Vince Gilligan) has a bit of an unsettled feeling to it because it was kind of treading water, waiting to see what happened with DD and the series. Nothing too monumental could happen with the partnership or the plot because it wasnât clear to anyone what would happen next with the show: whether it would end or continue, whether DD would be involved or not.
So we have a story about Mulder and Scully making peace with not having a significant impact on the worldâe.g. not bringing about world peace, not introducing invisible bodies to science. Instead, they are content to delightfully share a beer and comment that they have made one another âpretty happyâ (as Scully says about Mulder). Through the jinni character, they seem to take the lesson that they can enjoy being with one another, accept the simple happiness that their relationship brings them. Rather than wish for success that comes too easily, they take joy in the little things with one another.
Comparing this episode to the Penultimate Partner episodes that come before, we can really see how Mulder and Scullyâs dynamic has evolved by season seven. We have a Scully who is much more open to supernatural phenomena, for example, and whose skepticism seems more like a reflex or a defense mechanism now. Scullyâs move towards belief is partially reflected in the plot of the episode: the X-file here really isnât even science fiction. It is just straight up fantasy or magical realism. Aside from Scully's brief mention of a disease to explain what happened to the mouthless man in the cold open, no plausible scientific explanation for the jinni's long life or wishes is really even floated.
Scully is delighted by the discovery of the invisible body, and Mulder is visibly delighted by her delight. Heâs also frustrated by her retreat into doubt when the body disappears, of course. But even the reversal into her old skepticism is half-hearted, as she soon after she's engaging in discussion with Mulder about what his final wish was. This is consistent with the overall blurring of the old hardline believer-skeptic dynamic we see in season 7. Itâs also peeking ahead to Scullyâs coming role as resident basement believer in season 8.Â
The last scene, with the beers and Caddyshack, is meant to be a callback to djinni Jennâs comment that she wishes she could âlive my life moment by moment... enjoying it for what it is instead of... instead of worrying about what it isn't.â Mulder, we see, is taking a cue from her. (And good for him, as we almost never see these characters do this. Except on rare baseball-related occasions.)
However, this episodeâs position right before Requiemâand right before the events of season 8âends up giving this scene a real bittersweet bite. We know, after Requiem, that they were probably a romantic couple at this time. We know, after Requiem, that this time is going to be their last happy time together for a long while. Later in season 8, we learn that one lingering wish of Scullyâs in season 7 is that she wanted to conceive a child with Mulder. And of course we know, after Requiem, that she gets her wishâbut with a vicious catch, with a terrible side effect, much like what happens with the jinniâs wishes.Â
So thatâs my academic thesis on that. I know others have pointed out the existence of this type of episode before. What did I miss? Do you think I am wrong to leave out seasons 1, 2, 8, and 9? Why do we think these episodes focus so much on distorted perception? Interested to hear othersâ thoughts (if they make it through this lol).

Buddie: I'm excited to see what's next for Buck, Eddie and Chris
Going forward, unless it's for reference purposes, I will NO LONGER post anything about BT 2.0.
Before I explain why I won't be posting anything about BT 2.0, I'll begin with a brief summary. In 2021, I watched "The Shooting" live (related post linked here) and it was one of the best scenes in television I'd ever seen. Since then, I've probably watched it more than a hundred times and during the hiatus between seasons 4 and 5, I purchased every episode of 9-1-1's previous seasons and I spent the entire summer watching seasons 2 - 4 because I wanted to know more about Buck and Eddie's relationship. I noticed the emotional and casual intimacy they shared and when I compared it to the relationships they had with love interests, it was easy to see there was a huge and noticeable difference.
My excitement for the show dramatically increased before season 5 began in September 2021 and later that year, I found the Buddie fandom here on Tumblr and I was even more excited because I didn't know fandoms for TV shows even existed. By the time April 2022 rolled around, I finally decided to rejoin Tumblr (after being off it for a while) because I wanted to communicate with people who liked Buddie and the Buckley-Diaz family.
I started out by doing small posts regarding the things I noticed but a whole knew world was opened to me after I started reading METAs fanfics and theories along with viewing GIF sets and fanart. It didn't take me long to start posting my own METAs and speculations and I when I wanted to add GIFs to my posts, I taught myself how to make them on my iPad. In January 2023, I started posting some of the fanfics I wrote during season 5 and my fandom experience was further enhanced. It was an exciting time and I loved every minute of it.
Even though Season 5 was exhausting as hell because of BT 1.0, I still enjoyed it because of Eddie's PTSD arc and the Buckley-Diaz family scenes that were included. Eddie's my favorite character and I was happy to see him moving forward with his therapy and his life in general. BT 1.0 was dragged out for the entire season but season 6 looked promising... at least it did until it ended. I spent more than three months writing "Constructive Criticism" posts about all the things I didn't like and I was on the fence about whether I was even going to watch season 7. But after the str*kes ended and the promos for the new season began airing on a new network looked promising, I was excited again especially since the original showrunner (TM) had returned from LS and I couldn't wait to see where he would take Buck's and Eddie's storylines.
Similar to the title of episode 2x17, I should have been careful about what I wished for because even though it started out strong, after the opening disaster, it turned into a complete and utter dumpster fire and my experience in this fandom not only became exhausting; it was horrifically horrible because of a kiss between Buck and a PLOT DEVICE. Almost immediately, Buddie shippers started being harassed and were sent asks from blank blogs (they weren't anonymous for me because I don't accept those) telling shippers to stop posting about Buddie because they were never going to be better than BT and that we should just accept BT because they were CANON đ.
Anyway, needless to say, the last 7 months have been pure hell because of toxic BT Stans who have no boundaries, morals or fandom etiquette. Therefore, since I can't control anyone but myself, this morning, I made a decision that going forward, I'm turning the page on the BT 2.0 relationship because it's over and I'm tired of talking about it. I don't give a rat's ass about why TM chose to do what he did and why they didn't let Buck learn anything from it especially since this wouldn't have happened if whatever they were doing had ended in 7x5 but I digress.
Be clear, this is not a vague post at anyone in particular. I'm simply stating that I will no longer participate in fandom discourse about that relationship because I'm sick of it and I'm f~cking glad it's finally done. For me, it's taken a backseat just like EddieShannon, EddieMarisol, EddieAna, BuckAbby, BuckTaylor, BuckAli and BuckNaTalia because they're over and the characters are barely being mentioned in CANON, if at all. I'm done posting about these 'sunk ships' and the only time I'll include them in a blog post is when I have to reference them. Otherwise, I've moved on and I will not add anti BT or anti TK tags to my posts unless it's for blacklisting and filtering purposes because I don't give a flying f~ck about T.K. 2.0 anymore.
Now that it's over, I'm excited about writing Buddie METAs, speculations and theories again. Prior to season 8, I stopped writing them because I didn't want to and I didn't have the energy or the desire to do it due to all the toxicity. Since I was tired of being jump scared, I stopped watching live after 7x6 aired and even though I did watch 7x10, I wished I hadn't because it was a big nothing burger.
I'm excited because I don't have to worry about seeing Buck with that one-dimensional love interest who couldn't act his way out of a paper bag.
This Thursday, for the first time in months, I'll be watching live again and I might live blog the episode. I miss doing that and I can't wait to see what's going to happen with the call on the "Hotshots" set that has a fake firefighter hanging from the aerial and I wonder if Eddie will have flashbacks about the night him and Buck got struck by the same bolt of lightning.
The purpose of this long post is to say, I've moved on and I will no longer dedicate any of my blog space, writings or anything else to that relationship because the character doesn't deserve my attention. It's even more exhausting than BT 1.0 and they were in a relationship for the entirety of season 5.
Since I love Eddie, I'm ready to focus my METAs and speculation on what's next for him. I was planning to do a long post on 8x6 but I won't since I've already done two long posts about BT 2.0's breakup. So now my attention will be focused solely on Eddie until I finish the posts I want to do regarding his scenes. I loved the fact that he got the majority of the screen time at the end of 8x6 and when Buck showed up, that made it even better.
I ONLY SHIP BUDDIE! I ALWAYS HAVE AND I ALWAYS WILL.
I've turned the page and I'm excited to see where Buddie is going next. I'm ready for them to enjoy spending time together again without Temu third wheeling and infringing on their relationship. I'm ready for their son to come home so the Buckley-Diazes can spend time together again too. I don't know when Chris will return but I don't think it was a coincidence that there was a picture of him on the sofa table that's next to the door underneath a picture of Texas especially since it was in the middle of Eddie and Buck.
So, here's to me being excited for Buddie and ignoring anything BT 2.0 related đĽłđžđĽđ.
I'm ready to enjoy my Buddie fandom experience again by creating METAs, theories, speculation, GIF sets and continuing to write fanfics and I can't wait!

Another really good one, I like this because we're starting to see a lot of this redemption thing in the BT tags. This was a question about Gerard and his connection to Tommy. And now that we know they're not upset about us sharing their answers I feel okay sending it to you.
A. Happy Friday to you as well! Unfortunately, based on your question, I don't think you're going to like my answer, but I promised you guys my honesty so here goes. Gerard is not here for Tommy. Gerard is not here for a Tommy redemption arc. Mainly because we (the audience) are not meant to see Tommy as needing redemption. Tommy is a general audience character. Meaning everything we're supposed to know or care about where Tommy is concerned is what the show told us in season 7. He is the guy Buck is currently dating and he used to work at the 118 before Bobby took over. That's it. That's all the show needs the audience to care about, at least right now. Fandom people are the only ones who remember his exact history, and no offense to anyone, they didn't bring him in for us. He is there to serve a specific story purpose so his individual history is irrelevant. Gerard is there for Bobby, and increasingly I think, Eddie. The Bobby stuff is obvious, but Ryan has mentioned Gerard now in a couple of interviews so I think he's giving us a clue that Eddie and Gerard will be some kind of story.
The Tommy stuff depends on whatever reason the show decides to give for his breakup with Buck. And yes, I do genuinely believe that is what's coming. If he's meant to be the one responsible for Buck figuring out his feelings for Eddie then I don't think his history with Gerard will be brought up except maybe as a scene or two in passing (if it's not necessary for the breakup, it probably won't be mentioned at all). If Buck is the one they want to end things, and have him figure out his Eddie feelings another way, then I think Tommy's past with Gerard will play a bigger role in their breakup. Especially if he tells Buck to deal with him by just keeping his mouth shut, and his head down and ignoring him. We all know Buck won't do that, especially if Gerard makes Eddie a target. So it depends entirely on the reason for their breakup. They don't need Tommy in a ton of scenes to accomplish either scenario, which is good because I do think he will also be filming SWAT and his availability won't be great. If he's supposed to figure out the Buck and Eddie thing, and point it out to Buck, we will need his reaction to at least some Buck and Eddie moments, (or at least his reaction to Buck's reaction to some of those moments), so they might need him for a few more scenes if they go that route for the breakup. Either way I don't see him lasting past the winter finale. Whatever the plan for Buck, I think he'll be ready for Eddie by the break, maybe even before. I think the second half of the season will be getting Eddie ready and then building up to Buddie. I don't see them dragging the Buddie thing out all season but I do think it will be the latter part of the back half of the season. Depending on Lou's availability he may be done sooner than the winter finale. We just don't know yet. But as someone who has watched the show from the beginning I don't know what other direction the Eddie storyline could be going. It's he's queer, or they're writing him as never going to be in love again because he was that in love with Shannon (which would be god awful television), or he becomes a devout Catholic (absolutely not). Those are kind of the only outcomes they've given themselves. And I'm sorry you don't like them, but Buck and Eddie learning to navigate an actual relationship, given Eddie's intimacy issues, inability to communicate his feelings, and his family/upbringing, as well as Buck's abandonment issues and need to fix everything is interesting storyline after interesting storyline. No one will force you to watch. And you're correct that lots of people will be pissed off, but many more would love it. They're very well liked by the general audience, people have got to stop trying to convince themselves otherwise because it's simply untrue. They're popular, people like them and most people would be interested in watching that storyline play out. It feels earned. Earned by Buck and Eddie and the audience. I know this answer has probably upset you and many others, and that is never my intention, but I also don't believe in telling people what they want to hear when the canon events seem to be leading in a different direction.
*chef's kiss* love it love it love it
Hi Nonny, thank you for sending in this really interesting message from the âanonymous blog I loveâ.
For those of you who have missed it, the OP of these very interesting posts on BT and Buddie has contacted me yesterday. They are a BT shipper that also like Buddie and they are okay with me posting their messages. They do however, wish to remain anonymous because they donât want to attract any more negative attention. Their inbox is probably already a minefield, so letâs not add to their stress and respect their wishes. Thank you.
If you are interested in the OPâs posts, you can find all of their posts so far under the tag: anonymous blog I love.
Now, letâs talk about this answer:
The answer above is very interesting to me. They talk about Tommyâs role in the whole Gerrard saga and I fully agree on most of it. They point out again that Tommy is there to serve a purpose in Buckâs story, so essentially he is there as a plot device in Buckâs narrative.
As for Tommyâs role in Buckâs story, I am of the belief that Tommy will be the one to tell Buck to just âKeep your head down, your mouth shut and pretend it isn't there.â as he complains to him about Gerrard and how he treats his friends on the 118. This is something Buck could never do. He isnât like Tommy, he canât just accept and tolerate his friends being bullied by their new captain.
I agree with OP that Tommy will probably be gone by the end of 8a. His arc will be finished and the queer Eddie/Buddie arc will be in full swing by then. This arc wonât find its satisfying ending until well into 8b though. There needs to be drama first. And I do believe that there will be a lot of drama before we actually get the payoff of the Buddie storyline.
The fact that Eddieâs arc is most likely to go into the direction of him realising heâs queer seems unavoidable. Itâs like OP said: Itâs either queer Eddie with eventual Buddie or ânever again in loveâ Eddie. Two options and we all know which one will bring along the most press and a whole gaggle of new viewers. đ
Now, as a treat, I have a second post from the OP for you today. This was sent to my mutual and friend @buddiebeginz and she has kindly allowed me to use her post on my blog in order to centralise all the posts from the OP. Thank you Justine!
For context Iâd like to relay to you why this post was sent to Justine. She received an ask earlier which she replied to here. I urge all of you to read her reply as well, as it was very insightful and I do agree with most of it.
Anyway, someone else sent her an anon ask later on as a response to the post she made. This anon had found a reply from the OP as to why they thought that Tommy is âgoodâ for Buck âright nowâ and why they enjoy the characterâs role in Buckâs story for as long as it will last.
Keep reading under the cut. I didn't want to clog anyone's dash with too long of a post.
Here is that ask with OPâs answer:
I admit I really like this answer. The way they break down Tommyâs role in Buckâs story as Buck having a âfun and lightâ first experience as a newly out bisexual, before the more âheavyâ Eddie and Buddie story will start. I understand it and I can see how that could be some valuable life experience for Buck, so he is strong enough to tackle the next part of the Buddie journey. I can logically 'perceive' that this is what the writers originally intended for the BT storyline.
Does this mean that I suddenly like Tommy and the BT arc? No. Definitely not. And I think the problem can be found in the way that Tommy and BT was written. He wasn't written as a very appealing character. I donât see the chemistry between him and Buck and I think they donât fit well together. Their âenergiesâ just don't match. I don't see enough proof of him truly caring about Buck in any of the episodes. So, I admit I can't see the 'light and fun' experience OP talks about. To me Tommy is just weighing Buck down with too much negativity.
And let's not forget about how we were all introduced to Tommy in season 2 and the way he treated Hen and Chimney. The man was never meant to be a 'nice and likeable' character with a questionable background like that. They tried to redeem him somewhat with the helicopter cruise ship rescue storyline, but to me it fell kind of flat.
And yes, of course there is also the âEddie factorâ. I have been shipping Buddie for years now, so whether I like it or not, I am biased towards Buddie. I am also not a multi-shipper. I just donât have that in me. Once I latch onto a ship I never let go. đ
So yeah, ultimately⌠different opinions make for more interesting conversations, right? And I love reading about OPâs opinions. Sometimes they match my own and sometimes they donât, but I still respect them and value their view on 911. Thatâs what fandom should be about: sharing opinions, respectfully agreeing or disagreeing with each other, listening and learning from each other. Itâs so much more enjoyable than sending anonymous hatred to someoneâs inbox.
Anyway, once again I ask everyone to not post any hate towards the OP in the comments or reblogs. I do highly encourage a civil conversation about the topics discussed in this post. đ

Having âsleptâ (slept for 2 hour intervals the entire night because this episode made me feverish and gave me a constant urge to vomit) on it, I can firmly say that this is one of the stupidest fucking decisions 9-1-1 has ever made. This is on par with Hen spending a whole season studying to be a doctor only to drop it right at the finish line and The Lucy Kiss.
At the very least, you knew â you had a gut feeling â that they wouldnât give up on Paramedic!Hen. You knew in your soul that Buck and Taylor were already doomed and the Lucy Kiss just broke the camelâs back.
But this?
Buck and Tommy were good. They were on track to say their âI love youââs and have actually new storylines. During the breakup scene, at no point during or before the actual breakup did I think a breakup was even a possibility. While I was texting a friend during the episode, I said the following, which I think sums up most of our thoughts:
They had a whole new character set up, that had interesting dynamics with the existing cast and insecurities that could be proven wrong, especially by Buck. What was the point of bringing up Tommyâs âlackâ of daddy issues? What was the point of the group chat scene and his yearning for a family if youâre not going to commit to it? Instead, they finally made Tommy a plot device, and they did it by putting out a scene thatâs the equivalent of shooting someone with a sniper rifle from five miles away.
The worst part is: This breakup is fucking out of character. Iâm aware that⌠certain people thought Tommy and Eddie were out of character last episode, but this is what an out of character interaction looks like.
Tommy, since being reintroduced, has been established as a fantastic communicator. The only reason he and Buck ever got together in the first place was because Tommy came to Buckâs loft to clear the air in 7x04. He makes it clear during the coffee date why he ended their first date. Heâs the one who initiates the dinner conversation in 7x10 and gets Buck to open up about his fears of losing Bobby.
So. Why in the EVER LOVING FUCK was he silent about seeing their relationship as a short term one? Completely ignoring the Henren deleted scene where he says heâs going at Buckâs pace, that scene is now firmly non-canon, Season 7 Tommy would have NEVER led Buck on like that. Hell, 8x01 and 8x05 Tommy would have never led Buck on like that.
The Tommy shown in the final⌠what, seven minutes of 8x06? Wouldnât have accepted Buckâs invitation to Madneyâs wedding. His job was done! He got Buck to âdiscover his sexuality.â
This entire episode felt like a slap in the face to the people who are invested in this relationship, it feels like a slap in the face to Lou, who was excited about Tommy and this storyline, it feels like a slap in the face to the general audience, because there were no obvious indications that a breakup was ANYWHERE near Bucktommyâs future.
I very sincerely hope that this is either a temporary break up, or the reaction from the GA and fandom gives the team input that they massively fucked up here and they pivot the storyline over the course of the midseason break.
As for me? I donât think Iâll be watching the series live anymore. I might catch up on the series once it goes on itâs midseason break, but right now? I just⌠I canât. I canât put any more energy into a show that clearly doesnât care about progressing their character. (Seriously, what the fuck, Oliver?)
This week has been awful from start to finish.
