Sometimes I get the urge to do some real cringe shit like writing character study songfic like it's 2005 and we're all trawling Fan Fiction Dot Net with no idea of the doom to come.

Prompt 261
“So is no one going to talk about the eldritch space child or…”
“I mean, do you want to get between a child and Batman? I think the only one who could even get close right now is Superman…”
“No you’re right, I think- oh my god the eldritch space child is playing with batman’s bat-ears and he’s not doing anything about it what the fuck I thought only Robins could get away with that-”

It is so, so important to me that people understand that Tim didn't figure out the bats because Dick was a "Show off". Like yes, Dick Grayson is the most flamboyant, dramatic ass man you will ever meet.
But the quadruple somersault? There's no way that was because dick was just showing off. Because you're telling me Bruce Wayne, who's so committed to hiding his identity that he literally acts like a completely different person out of the mask in public just to ward suspicion, would miss the fact that Robin regularly uses the flying Grayson's trademark move? There's literally no way.
In the comics we see Tim explain his deductive process to Dick and Alfred and they're both surprised impressed whatever. We don't see him explain it to Bruce. I think Bruce would be surprised and shocked that a 9 year old was able to put the pieces together but I don't think he'd be surprised that the quadruple somersault gave it away.
Tumblr media
So if Bruce was possibly aware of such an obvious give away, why let it continue?
I'll tell you why.
It really comes down to the physics
So Dick was 9 when he started out right? That means the most he'd have likely weighed was 43kgs or roughly 95lbs in freedom units.
But Dick and both of his parents are gymnasts who tend to be smaller. So he was likely less than that.
In physics, rotating objects build up angular momentum (this is how bikes stay up right for example). The more rotation, the more momentum. And objects with less mass build up that momentum much faster than those that are heavier.
Robin constantly has to fight people who are nearly 3 times his size. I teach 8 year olds, they're tiny. A quadruple somersault for a small boy that weighs less than a hundred pounds is a brutal weapon. Especially if you add in the acceleration from gravity as he drops in from above.
And I can guarantee you this logic tracks because Dick literally utilizes this idea, without the somersault, in the 2009 teen titans cartoon.
Yeah, that's right. We're talking about the infamous knee drop.
Tumblr media
Like it is borderline savage. Add in a quadruple somersault and the resulting force is nearly fatal. It's likely the main reason Batman would ever allow him to do it with the cape on.
Also, Dick landing feet first on the penguin in the first image probably gave the guy severe back issues

Tim Drake: Always the Almost
There’s something about being almost.
Tim Drake was never meant to be Robin. Not really. Not in the way Dick was—the bright, acrobatic first son. Not like Jason—the reckless, fiery second chance. Tim? Tim wasn’t supposed to be a hero at all. He wasn’t chosen. He chose himself.
But even when he did everything right, even when he saved Batman from himself, he was still almost.
Almost Robin.
Almost Batman’s partner.
Almost part of the family.
It’s exhausting being the one who holds it all together, who sees all the cracks but is never quite enough to fill them. He was the one who picked up the pieces after Jason died, the one who figured it all out, who knew Bruce was spiraling long before anyone else did. But when Bruce looked at him, he didn’t see Tim. He saw a kid trying to fit into a suit too big for him. He saw someone filling a role, not someone who belonged.
And Tim did it anyway. Because that’s what Tim does. He steps up. He takes the hits. He keeps going.
But that doesn’t make it any less lonely.
Even when he became Robin, it wasn’t the same. Dick was the golden child. Jason was the one everyone mourned. And Tim? He was the placeholder. The one who kept the legacy going while the real Robins cast their shadows over him. And when Damian came along, when Bruce’s actual son showed up, it was like the universe confirmed what Tim always feared deep down:
He was never supposed to be there.
Damian made it clear from day one. He didn’t need Tim. Gotham didn’t need Tim. Hell, Bruce didn’t need Tim. Not anymore. Damian was the son, the heir. And Tim? Tim was expendable. Replaceable.
It shouldn’t hurt. But it does. It always does.
Because no matter how many times he saves Gotham, no matter how many times he proves himself, Tim is still almost. Almost enough. Almost part of the family. Almost loved.
And the worst part? The part that no one ever sees, because Tim is so good at hiding it—he wants to be enough. He wants so badly to be seen, to be valued, to be the person they miss when he’s not there.
But he knows they wouldn’t. Not really.
Because Tim Drake is always almost.
And that’s the part that will break him.

One thing I wanna do more is include Battinson's complete lack of filter.
That scene at the funeral where Falcone tried to push that 'your father saved me for a reason' fantasy, which Bruce ended very quickly with his '' He took the Hippocratic oath" line
It can sure read as snarky, and in some parts, it was, -- Falcone's antourage surely saw it as that, -- but Bruce was completely serious.
It wasn't a diplomatic move on his part, but that's why it works. 'No filter' doesn't generally entail being rude and bold, it's your thoughts being faster than your mouth without considering how it'd sound out loud
Not to mention, Bruce wouldn't process sarcasm the same as everyone else. He's good at dishing it, for sure, but we've seen he's completely oblivious to obvious social ques,
If somebody were to be like, " haha maybe YOU'RE batman" him, the go to reaction would be " haha good one"
Bruce? Would start shaking on the spot. It's raining nerves out here. " No I'm not." With a blank face, " I'm not. I'm scared of bats. I hate bats. I wish bats never existed. I wish YOU never existed. Im sorry. Goodbye." Before taking off in a hurry.

The way Jason Todd lost so much aura because DC decided to make him just another batman side character instead of the vengeful super villain that he was.

This popped into my brain and wouldnt leave so I wanted to share it with yall
A young boy and his parents are attacked on the street, only the boy makes it out.
It's a rare occurrence, an event like this, the police find the man and arrest him and everyone else is safe.
Bruce Wayne goes home to a mansion that feels larger and lonelier than ever, with only his butler to take care of him.
And yet the young boy finds himself too afraid to leave for more than necessities.
The young boy grows into a young man, he inherits his parents business and starts to leave his house a little more, unwilling to lose this connection to his lost parents but still he finds himself afraid, afraid to be around people, to be seen.
Until one day at a gala he must attend for the sake of the shareholders, he sees a man, a reporter, who holds himself in an odd way, clearly a tall and strong man who could be intimidating if he tried but the man held himself as if to appear smaller and unassuming, Bruce's brain flitters across the idea that the man is hiding something, or more hiding himself.
His brain that has soaked up comics and movies for years so as to not grow bored in his home.
And when he learns of all the good this reporter has been trying to do, he thinks the man would make a good superhero.
When he goes home the thought wont leave him alone, he thinks of a world with a hero, a world that needs a hero, one where his parents murder would have just been one of many, but this hero wouldn't have been there to help, he was too bright, a hero for the daytime, not for the shadows of night.
He thinks maybe he could have been a hero in this world, one that saves other kids from suffering a fate like his own.
One who is afraid and fights anyway.
The next time he leaves his home there's an event at a museum, with some special objects that are in town for a few days. There he sees a woman who knows so much about ancient relics and is so beautiful that he doesn't believe she could be just a normal human.
He thinks she would share her knowledge and kindness with the world given the chance.
While he remains mostly alone, other than his Parental figure/Butler, he also keeps in contact with two friends from when he was in school.
One is now a psychiatrist, with an interest in learning about fear and how it can change people, and the other a psychologist, both working at the city's asylum.
Harleen is who Bruce considers his best friend, a goofy but kind girl who cares alot about others, she tells him about a patient, without going into much detail, who she claims would be cute if he wasn't so insane. Smiling and laughing while he talks about harming others.
She got a boyfriend somewhere along the way, a man Bruce is sure abuses her but she can't seem to leave.
The three get in a fight one day, and lose contact, and Bruce supposes you can't have heroes without villains, though he can't bring himself to think of Harley as a villain by her own choice.
On the news Bruce learns of a man working to better science as they know it, a man who always seems to be a few minutes too late, he follows the story until the day something goes wrong and the man is there on time to shield workers from flying chemicals, killing him but saving others, Bruce thinks the man a hero in death, and could have been one in life, one who always made it to where he was needed just on time.
As time went on Bruce tried to get out more in normal ways, one night he went to the circus, he enjoyed it, reminding him of the day when he was little and his parents brought him to one just like it.
It was a few days later that he learned at the next show there was an accident, and a little boy lost his parents, he remembered being small and feeling alone when he had lost his, thankful for the man who cared for him he wished he could do the same for this little boy, but knew he didn't have the skills needed.
He could, however, make sure the boy got somewhere safe, and other kids like him too.
So he held a fundraiser and donated a lot of money into the foster system, doing what he could to make it safe.
And he thought of a world where he could have taken the little circus boy into his home, making it brighter and less lonely.
As he ventured out more and more Bruce travelled through different parts of the city, he saw a group of little children cowering behind one bigger who had just chased off a grown man, Bruce smiled as the kids cheered for the little hero.
It was the news that later told him the boy was dead, a homeless kid who stopped being seen, the little hero was gone.
Bruce held another fundraiser, this one for the homeless shelters and kitchens.
It was the news that told him the boy was not dead, found by the police, with other stolen children.
Children that returned to a better place.
The day he lost his last parent is the day where he began to feel truly alone, the only person there for him gone, but Alfred would live forever in his memory's as the man who loved and cared for him.
He reached out to Harly again not wanting to be all alone, and they made up, he learned she had gotten free of her abusive boyfriend and had fallen for a woman who's love of nature was refreshing and new.
He knew little about his neighbours, but he tried to get to know them better, he struggled but eventually learned that the woman that lived there was very sick and that the man was not home much, when he learned of the child who spent so much of his time alone, he thought the kid was brave and told him if he ever needed anything to just ask.
The kid needed someone the day when his mother didn't wake up and his father wasn't home. Bruce did what he could, he was no father but he cared for the kid the best he could until his was able to return.
Bruce knew it was expected of him to have a family, someone to give his things and his business when he passed. He tried dating, but nothing ever seemed to work out.
However one day he learned of a child, a son, one the mother hadn't told him about, he tried to gain any sort of parental rights but couldn't get any custody, only visitation, he met the boy, a quiet but fiercely determined child, And he loved his son even without seeing him much.
When the quiet, hermit, billionaire Bruce Wayne, best known for appearing, donating large amounts of money to random causes and then disappearing again, passed away his belongings and company were to be split between two people, Timothy Drake, and Damian al Ghul, when the two met up to split his things, they found writings the man had never told anyone of.
Writings of a world where regular people became heroes, where aliens walked amongst humans, and where magic made lives exciting.
They agreed to publish the story's for the world to see.
To most people, the writings were just an entertaining fiction story that a billionaire wrote with his unlimited free time.
But to the retired reporter who knew his height frightened others, who now rested and found the stories learned that someone had seen how he stood, and what he had done and thought of him as a hero,
To the artefact collector and preserver who learned this man believed she was so knowledgeable about what she had strived to learn everything about, as well as beautiful, that he thought her to be blessed by the gods,
To the old psychologist who mourns her friend, a man who thought that no matter what she went through she'd always make the right choice in the end,
To the family of a man who lost his life saving others, who this guy they had never met thought so highly of,
To the man that lost his only family to an accident at their circus, he was a man who wanted him get a good home, where'd he'd get anything he ever wanted,
To a man that went through so much, believed dead for so long to learn this man who he had only seen once, saw him not as a poor homeless kid but as a fighter and protector,
To the boy that new the man for a short time, as a temporary guardian and protector, who made him feel safe and not alone when he needed it most,
And To the boy who wished he could have known his father, but was kept away by his mother,
The storys showed to them all that this man, who some thought of as cold and egotistical, as he locked himself away and refused to be around others, was actually an anxious, lonely man, who saw what others didn't and cared about everyone in his own odd way.
I just thought it was a cool idea I wanted to share with yall, so I hope you guys like it
This is my first post on here, so please be nice,
Also, ignore any spelling or grammar mistakes Dyslexia goes brrr
If you want to know what I think he based the other heroes and character off of, just ask, and I'll figure it out!
Thanks for reading, and have a good day!
Edit:

I genuinely didn't realize how sad this was, lol. Sorry, not sorry, guys

Okay so here's my thing: I figured I would hop right into part 2 of my babby Tim fic after finishing part 1, and then a really fucked up Tim/Ra's idea jumped into my head and got me by the throat, and now I have mood whiplash from my own brain/writing?!
Also, a scene from my truly stupid, self-indulgent "Jason and Tim accidentally become bros immediately" fic sprung into my sleepy mind and then poured itself out of my fingers fully formed into a Google Doc.
So. I may be writing multiple longfics at the same time. Wish me luck?!

#ramblings of a lunatic#batman and robin#damian wayne#dc comics#''ladel are you gonna get obsessive about the character again and hunt down any and all official art of them-'' no what makes u say that#nikola cizmesija was the artist on the recent red hood gotham wars tie-ins btw! same colourist as those issues too#...idk how much dc tumblr is actually in to the production side of comics. i know i am but i have a feeling that's not universal#anyway i actually really like to know the individual artists colourists and inkers on stuff if i can it's fun!#anyway i quite liked the art in those red hood issues so i am :] excited for issues 5 and 6!#there was also a cover(?) defs done by cizmesija that has damian and bruce in like underwater batsuits? like they're wet suits#and they're fighting orca on it! and cizmesija mentioned getting to design new suits so! it seems like we're getting an underwater adventure#for that arc at least! the writer joshua williamson said that he's trying to focus the structure more around shorter arcs this time#so it seems like in the shorter breather arcs we might get little artist changes to break it up?? neat imo#i like a book w consistent art if I'm really vibing w the art but i get that a lot of ppl have mixed feelings on di meos art for b&r#so I'm interested to see what the reception will be to cizmesijas when it comes out in...i think January? same month as the annual#i saw a solicit that said the art for the annual was by Howard Porter but i could be wrong#god this got way off track. I dunno man I feel like most statements along the lines of ‘Batman isn’t REALLY x, he’s y’ don’t hold much water because usually, there’s a pretty good chance a number of writers over the years have written him as x, you just didn’t like it or think it doesn’t count for some reason.
For example ‘Batman isn’t REALLY a good parent, he’s actually a bad parent’, when Batman has been written as a good parent by a number of writers, and has, in addition, been written as realizing that he’s screwed up with his children and resolved to fix it by even more. At the same time, stating ‘Batman isn’t REALLY a bad parent, he’s actually a good parent’ is also incorrect, because Batman has been written as a bad parent by a number of writers, either intentionally or not; in addition, the pattern presented by the tug-of-war between writers who believe he should be a good parent and writers who don’t has, over the years, created an unintentional pattern that strongly resembles that of an abusive relationship. So, stating he is a good parent is inaccurate and dismisses a bunch of his canon writing, but stating he is a bad parent also dismisses a bunch of his canon writing and the intentions of the authors that wrote him.
The secret here is realizing that Batman has had so many writers over the years that it’s practically impossible to find a universal truth about him beyond the basic premise and maybe very, very basic characterization keystones. Writers with different beliefs about both the character and the world at large have written him in accordance to their worldview, and sometimes that worldview will align with yours, and sometimes it won’t.
Like, at this point, Batman is more an idea than he is a character. He is the bare-knuckled fight against injustice, but what ‘injustice’ is depends heavily on your worldview, as does what ‘bare-knuckled’ and ‘fight’ mean. Batman has been interpreted in dozens of different ways over the years, and singling out a few of those as the True Batman is largely arbitrary and dependent on your personal taste and belief in what the character should be. The only ‘objective’ measurement you could apply here are the old Golden Age comics, and I think most fans can agree that measuring modern Batman comics by how faithful they are to the Golden Age comics is, more often than not, a little ridiculous.
For the record, I do think that arguing about what Batman should be matters; if right-wing assholes use the character as a mouthpiece for their worldview we can and should critique that, but not because it’s ‘OOC’, but because the worldview espoused by those right-wing assholes is harmful and shitty. Batman should be a good parent, not because it’s ‘OOC’ for him to be a bad parent, but because having your paragon of justice be a child abuser is pretty shitty. Etc.
I don’t really have anywhere specific to go with this, I just think it’s a little strange when people try to view Batman as a character with a clear-cut characterization, rather than a concept that many people have approached in different ways over the years. Can that concept be mishandled? Sure. But it’s usually mishandled for reasons a bit more substantial than ‘a previous writer wrote it differently’.

nevermind i saw the leaks, i was right lmao.
jason is fine and they just coordinated to trick failsafe to get it to frazzle out afaik.
that makes sense considering the entire point of #147 was bruce deciding to work with his family despite his growing paranoia over their safety, etc. given that zdarsky has been trying to explore bruce's mental state, it would have made no sense for him to immediately validate that paranoia, instead.
#jason todd#bruce wayne#comics#dcu#unpopular opinion that while this arc has been kinda weird at points and def not as good as the failsafe arc from last year (?)#its still trying to do something interesting WRT exploring bruce's mental state and how it causes continued problems with the family#and trying to get him to work through that so that he can actually work with his family instead of against them#i keep seeing batfam enjoyers saying that they want the batfam to actually feel like a family and work together#and that's exactly what this run has been trying to build up towards actually lol#like if you want that you WOULD have to explore why that hasn't been the case already#and it has to start with bruce being a weird bastard about everything and everyone he cares about#and since it's THE batman title it is obviously going to focus on BRUCE -- that only makes sense#everyone else is a supporting character and will not be in there apart from supporting roles (or occasionally a secondary main)#i think its done it a bit clumsy because of the restraints of modern comics as a whole#but there's a lot of dudebros who are mad that bruce is like emotional and communicating recently -- so that's probably a good sign? lol#like i have my gripes with it but on the whole... i see the vision and i feel a bit sad that you can TELL where zdarsky was restricted#but that's a whole different post for when i actually sit down and put myself through reading all the stuff in a oneshot#because the monthly thing makes it easy to forget literally everything lol#see ya'll when the TPB comes out in a couple of months lol#tuesday spoilers#comic leaks

i’m sure you’ve talked about it before but you expand more on your thoughts about talia & jason and how their relationship would be? what are some positives and negatives their interactions would bring? (your talia metas are everything)
thank you! on talia's end i think a lot of it would come down to balance and restraint. because there are a lot of unpredictable factors at play and on top of it her tutelage of jason coincides with her last years under her father's thumb so there's parts of herself that she's beginning to close off out of self preservation and exhaustion. that's why i like the placement of under the hood right after the close of lexcorp era even if it obv wasn't intended because it puts her in a place comparatively to take all of the risks after a year of complete physical and emotional isolation. and even then i feel like there would still be a lot of restraint because of the guilt over her part in jason's various massacres. i could see her reprimanding him but in a very cautious and empathetic way so as not to set him off the way bruce would if he was the one lecturing him. so like.. not quite in the realm of mothering but maybe teetering on the edge of it. and i do think talia would try to maintain some distance out of respect for his history. which may or may not fuck with jason emotionally because as possessive as he is of his own grief i do think he'd long for even the smallest semblance of what he thinks he could get. like guarded as he is he would certainly soften to her over time and abide by her guidance even if he didn't necessarily verbalize the fact. i don't really know that i'd see any negatives between them like at worst it would be awkward and strained because he wouldn't be sure of how to place her in his life and she wouldn't want to overstep

lots of angst…
how many bocces of tissue do I need to prepare 🧍‍♀️🧍‍♀️
depends on whether or not I ever finish writing it 😪
it's called that bc it starts off with something very heavy happening to Jason (steph and jason are grabbed by black mask and he knows jason won't talk but he thinks he can make steph talk by hurting jason) and is, essentially, the bats feeling like shit and Jason wanting them to leave him alone and no one having any boundaries and Bruce assuming Jason will do something vengeful. also Roy is there but the more I learn about Roy outside of fanon, the more I hesitate to write JayRoy (but also I like iiiit)
and also Jason says: “But that’s the problem, Bruce. I keep my promises, but you never trust me. And you’re a liar, but I always believe you.”

I rlly liked red hood the hill bc besides the gift it completely ignored everything else with the batfam which to meeee I’m taking it as the hill has been overlooked by the bats forever (see Orpheus rising) so yeah nobody there gives a fuck about those people and jason knows better than to bring that shit over there
#genuinely tho#I dislike the trend rn of simplifying Jason and Bruce’s issues and making it seem like Bruce was nice and accepting all along and Jason just#needs to get with the program#like the fanficication of that and the Damian Bruce issues or Damian tim issues or even Dick and bruce issues#where everything comes down to the kids being insecure and Bruce being bad at communicating#which has always been PART of the main issues but using that as the crux and lens through which a solution will be acheived is a stretch#a stretch only made in fix it fics that is picked up by ppl who dont read shit and then writers who dont read dont care and get a check#THIS IS MY ISSUE WITH WHERE IT SEEMS BATFAM IS GOING THAT IS NOT AN ISSUE I HAVE WITH RE#NOT ABOUT RED HOOD THE HILL#back to red hood the hill#i DO like them#playing off how jason has always been able to relax there#with a community that has eachothers back#and the flip from#his early red hood days to seeing dana go that path is soooo#what i find interesting tho as that he positions himself as support and backup more than a deterrant#like yes he does try to talk her down a lot but most of the time hes living his life with a worried eye on her#and i think it shows to how he reacted to ppl (bruce) being heavy handed with him#and u know i love the batfam repeating awful cycles shit i think its very interesting that this is one jason didnt repeat#maybe bc hes so close to the feeling or that dana isnt to him what he was to bruce or even that hes just relaxing and thinking clearly and#above all trusts her#most toxic fun future would be for her to break that trust and him to go crazy but thats a diff rant#anyways my entire summary for jasons character is that THAT is what good coochie does to a nigga#carmen thank you for your service another crazy off the street 🙏🏾#red hood and the hill#oh. still no Orpheus mention#no it doesn’t hurt less anytime 💔#Jason Todd
