Some thoughts on Bruce Wayne -

The characterizations I most often see are that he’s a deeply compassionate man or he’s a rich man that uses crime as an excuse to beat on poor people.

I think the most accurate characterization is that he's a deeply compassionate man who’s angry and his anger frequently gets the better of him.

When Bruce is calm or in control, he’s kind.

He leaves Thanksgiving dinner for Solomon Grundy in The Long Halloween, he offers to help Joker at the end of The Killing Joke sincerely enough Joker actually considers it, he makes sure Lyle Bolton is fired in BTAS’s Lock-Up episode, and after their fight in Arkham City he reassures Mr. Freeze he’ll find Nora.

All of these are situations where the immediate danger has passed. Moreover, in most of them Bruce is the one in a position of power.

But Bruce has a temper, and when he’s stressed he starts acting on it. Notably, not being in control is a trigger for him. He beats the shit out of the fake Joker at the start of the The Killing Joke, nearly murders Joker after he ‘kills’ Thomas Elliot in Hush, and refers to Waylon as just an animal in Arkham Asylum.

And Bruce has good reason to be upset in these situations! In the The Killing Joke the real Joker proceeds to shoot Barbara and torture Gordon, he just saw an old friend die in Hush, and in Arkham Asylum he needs to find those plants to prevent Poison Ivy from destroying Gotham ASAP and Waylon’s forcing him to play whack-a-crock while doing it.

None of that changes the fact his behavior is shitty in those situations. Very understandable, and still very shitty.

These are both aspects of Bruce: He’s a compassionate man that wants to help people but has a temper he struggles with.

I credit Bruce’s self-awareness of his anger issues on why he’s so set on having rules. He needs to have hard lines he never crosses because he doesn’t trust himself not to go too far when he’s angry. Notably, in both The Killing Joke and Hush it’s Gordon that drags Batman back from the edge of going too far. Bruce doesn’t trust himself to make good judgment calls when he gets angry.

Bruce is a compassionate man and he’s an angry man and that’s part of what makes him such a compelling character to me. While he does give into his worst impulses at time, he does his best to act on his better ones and picks up the pieces when he fails to. Being good isn’t Bruce’s natural state; it’s something he has to make an effort to do.

Obviously, DnD characters are wish fulfillment and lots of people don’t want to address the slow senescence of the vulnerable human form in their fun games. That being said, narratively, I do think that levels should probably fluctuate over the course of a lifetime. The level twenty world-saver is going not going to stay level twenty into their old age—that’s not how athletes and retirement work! Wisdom and Charisma casters maybe, but your STR/CON/DEX builds are going to soften with age. They might still be the spryest bastards in the old people tai chi group, but “terrifyingly in shape 70 year old” is not the same as “deadliest man on the planet”. Drop those old folks a few levels, give them some creaky bones and presbyopia. It’s good for them, promise.

This is just an idea that I toss around for fun but I think in a Hornblower Goes Rogue situation it would be very interesting to have him defect to Algiers. He can't defect to most European states because they all want him dead for one reason or another; Algiers is close - he'd only have to make it past Gibraltar and he'd be clear. He'd be a good asset for them so could maybe get command of a vessel after a few years (though I'm not sure - he might have to turn his ship into a merchant vessel or something which I think would make him really mad so yayay), and he'd have more stability without the gallows hanging over him all the time (not sure what the state of piracy was in the Caribbean at this time, but I don't think it was doing well). But more importantly I think it would give him such massive amounts of cognitive dissonance about literally everything and I want to see him squirm. I think he would find things were in some ways better and also several ways in which Britain was just being hypocritical, and I think it would fuck him up. I think he'd get really into politics and the stock market and being surprisingly normal because no one has any expectations for him and that would make him hate himself even more. And most importantly, when Pellew shows up in 1816, I really want to see what he'd do.
