Starling

Starling’s the odd one out (ignoring Hoatzin, who’s past is a mystery to pretty much everyone except her and she seems content to keep it that way), because rather than training for or being in a military-type organization, he was just doing martial arts. For fun. Some of it was actual lessons, and some of it (namely the mounted arm blades) he was trying to figure out on his own from a video game he and his brother had been playing. He found he really enjoyed it, too.

And one day, as he was practicing, Rayonnant found him. And he was very impressed.

He 'asked' Starling to join him and, being mostly sane with no interest in really hurting anyone, Starling said "Hell no"

So Rayonnant went ‘aight, bet’. Killed his brother, kidnapped him, and sweetly informed him that if he doesn’t want to end up like his brother, he best do as he’s told. sadly none of Starling's weapons were actually sharp or useful in a real fight, so he had to get new, shiny, sharp ones. he'd be really hyped about it, if it weren't for the fact that he has to actually use them in real combat.

If he could, Starling would chuck him face first into a cliff face for what Rayonnant did to his brother. Unfortunately, Rayonnant would kill him for even trying.

In general, though, he's very talkative. Not quite as much as OG Paraiba, but enough that some of the team find him annoying. and by 'some' i mean everyone but Hoatzin, who just doesn't have the fucks to give about it. she's just like 'uh huh. yeah. really? wow. mhm.'

While he's come to enjoy Hoatzin's company, he still finds something about her just a little odd. But he knows a little about her issue with feeling emotions, so he kinda brushes it off. The fact that she seems to like hanging out with him and listening to him talk makes him much less uneasy around her.

Hoatzin’s situation is actually closer to OG Killer than Silver (both meaning "she’s closer to killer than she is to silver” and “she’s closer to killer than silver is”), but still not the same.

So, yeah. She's officially have The worst time of the team (her, starling, thrush, and cassowary). I haven't decided yet how Rayonnant found her, but presently he's using his aura to keep her under control by keeping her in a constant state of fear and anxiety. She is not allowed to feel anything else, aside from the occasional Nothing. She knows he's doing it, but she thinks it's unintentional. And that’s probably on purpose.

Starling is able to help some, but Hoatzin’s too fucked up because of the whole thing to understand that it’s not Starling that's helping, it’s staying away from Rayonnant. In her defense though no one else does either, except for Rayonnant himself. He lets her have her ‘friend’, because it helps keep her in line.

Starling, not being of particular interest to Rayonnant and being a big fan of not hanging out around him, usually stays as far away from Rayonnant as possible. This means that Starling usually is the farthest away from Rayonnant's aura. So by hanging out with Starling, Hoatzin ends up being at least on the fringes of Rayonnant's aura, if not outside of it entirely, most of the time. And like I said; neither of them realize that it's not Starling himself.

She's a vicious fighter, though. Even the rest of the team can hardly believe the unfeeling, cutthroat Hoatzin they fight with is the same anxious, jumpy Hoatzin that they live with. Thush and Cass are more than a little afraid of her. They think she's a little insane. Thrush genuinely wonders why she's not Rayonnant's second-in-command.

Hoatzin is more than okay with not being Rayonnant's second. please god let her stay where she is jesus christ
