extremely cool to see so many humanities + social sciences folks with a side of STEM, shoko would be so proud of us. as an anthro premed + mph first gen girlie, i strongly encourage those anons to keep on going!! it’s pain and hell but i was overall happier with this track and holding those diplomas felt SO GOOD
and honestly as someone who has helped their friends w med school apps+ interviews, those who were humanities and social science majors were just as successful (if not more lolol) than the stem majors. sure adcoms might like the ‘well-roundedness’ element but tbh i also think it’s not just because it’s ‘oh so unique’ but you could tell they were pursuing/studying something they genuinely were interested in. we like to think of medicine as purely empirical or objective but it’s such a wonderful blend of arts and science. one of my good friends was a performing arts/drama major and is finishing her last year of med school; she swears that her degree has helped her with patient communication and getting to know them more! it doesn’t get more humanistic than that imho
tldr we need more medical doctors with a background/vested interest in the humanities and social science. as cliche as it sounds do what you love and that’ll shine through. gl to that anon studying for the MCAT, you got this! and i’d be happy to help and connect anyone w MCAT resources and med school app stuff (which I’ll be going through in a few months pain. it’s def a journey)
sorry for the rant but was just so nice to see all your anons doing great things (and gl to you with grad school apps!)
NESSA YES!!!! i forgot you were ALSO premed anthro!!!!!! love my premed anthro friends <3333 so so proud of you <3333 i agree it might be a little harder but a lot of my friends do not regret pursuing their passion in undergrad and being in the premed track at the same time. i hope you're also doing well and taking care of yourself!!!!!

advice columns and essays and like, posts, where people in long term committed happy relationships tell single people who are unhappy about it that they just need to stop being sad about being alone and learn to love themselves and appreciate the beauty of solitude. inshallah they find a clue 🙏

Remember that it might not *only* be other skills, it could very much be other things with sentience.
And, if it were one of the other skills, it must be someone that either wants something from you, doesn’t like you, but it’s also familiar with the way you express yourself
Things to consider, sir.
Someone from the outside? Dolores on the dancefloor.
Liking me, however, is not needed to know my tone. I make myself heard. No surprise that it is memorable enough for even someone so lowly to parrot it. I carve grooves into gray matter.
Furthermore, liking me will NOT help them once I find them.

i have such a love for characters who descend into madness or villainy out of deep, deep empathy. characters who fundamentally cannot cope with the cruel realities they find themselves in and blow up about it in spectacular fashion. fallen angel type characters with tears of outrage in their eyes. characters who break before they bend, and break so badly they splatter blood all over their noble ideals. every variation on it gets me so good

Autistic spaces are getting so much more hostile towards people with low empathy, and it sucks
There was a subreddit I really liked, people were chill, and then there was a sudden influx of people making posts like ‘Autistic people have empathy! Saying we don’t makes us seem like monsters! Thats not a symptom!’ And people making posts explaining that no, actually, some of us do have low empathy got attacked and told they were wrong or ableist? And it sucks, because its just so hard to find a place to exist where you can be seen as not evil? I don’t know, it just hurts a lot to be told that

The way the government treats homeless people and panhandlers ought to be evidence enough on its own that empathy doesn't always lead to ethical behavior. Middle and upper class people get uncomfortable seeing homeless people because seeing someone in a bad state triggers an uncomfortable empathic response. They feel bad seeing people suffering. But people respond by trying to remove the source of their discomfort just as often as they respond with compassion.
That's why cities respond with hostile architecture and brutality. They just need to make the problem invisible, and people stop complaining.
Empathy is very useful, but it's no substitute for actual ethical principles.

i think having worked a retail or food service job actually is more important to not being a loser than doing drugs or having sex. the poll that showed so much of this site has never worked one of those jobs was actually way more concerning to me than any of the celibacy sweep polls
