2024 Wrapped: Drarry & Rarepair

I think we all agree that 2024 was far from great in many aspects. For me, last year was full of ups and downs with some happy fulfilling moments, and some very sad, difficult, anxiety-inducing moments. I took a few breaks from fandom and barely read anything in the 2nd half of the year, but a tradition is a tradition so here’s my annual wrapped, even if a bit late :) this list comes full of gratitude for the fics that brought me joy during these not so joyful times. It is also a love letter to short form as I did not have the time and mental space to indulge long fic as I used to. Looking at it, I’m happy to see a nice mix of old faves and new authors whose work I’ve been binging as if there was no tomorrow. As usual, keep in mind that this selection is 100% subjective as it reflects my very own perverted needs personal tastes. I hope you enjoy these gems as much as I did, and I wish you a generous new year, full of kindness and hope ✨

It should perhaps not have been a surprise that the repairman on his front step came not with coveralls and a toolbox but instead with a sardonic stare and a raised eyebrow.

my favourite odd job fic of 2024! what a fantastic concept to have a capable, smooth Draco rocking the hell out of those coveralls and making Harry (and all of us) salivate. this fic is a masterclass in short form: compelling characters (I love this disaster Harry so much), delicious build up and perfect pacing making their attraction feel genuine and organic.

Long Haul by @wolfpants (E, 9k)

The last person Harry expects to run into on a long haul flight to New York City is Draco Malfoy.

there’s something magically wistful about second chances and maybe that’s why I instantly fell in love with this beautiful love letter to Drarry and to NYC. I adore the gentle tone, the easy flirting and evocative atmosphere. the airplane smut is superb and there’s enough backstory to get you invested in their past without overshadowing the infinite possibilities the present is opening up for them right there. a beauty!

the best professors fic you’ll read today, this one pulled me right back into Drarry after summer break. what a delight of a fic - silly, fun, charming, with a perfect Hogwarts atmosphere that got me sad for not being there. their chemistry is unreal, with incredible banter - then deliberate teasing - and so much sexual tension it made me weak at the knees. oh, make sure to check the phenomenal art by @appleslightning!

lawyer Draco in a suit is always a favourite, combined with a politics plot? sign me up 👏🏻 this is a beautiful, clever, thought-provoking story with a great premise perfectly executed within 10k (but it feels much longer), captivating characters, relevant discussions, detailed world building and be still my heart, the amount of yearning! a gorgeous break up/make up that slowly unravels their past and delivers just the right amount of heartbreak with impressive economy of words.

Or: Harry makes a bunch of unintentional knotting jokes while an increasingly baffled Draco is driven insane.

I’ve read this almost a year ago and still remember laughing in delight from beginning to end. what a fun ride! my heart is soft for this cheeky, oblivious Harry with his cringey flirty banter and obsession with Draco’s secret 😂 their dynamic is perfect, light and silly and so very sweet. this fic is hilarious but also incredibly sexy and full of hot intimacy. I’m impressed by how easily Tee blends humour, fluff and heat so organically!

my first hoko fic is still my favourite, I got so emo over this one. can’t get enough of this sad, lost Harry navigating the growing pains of post-war life. he’s so young and vulnerable, my heart aches for him. I loved to watch him go from a desperate, co-dependent situationship with Charlie to a more mature and grounded relationship with Draco. touching and melancholy, this story stays with you for a while.

A child for Harry Potter is a miracle of magic. And it's the second act of Draco Malfoy's sorry little life.

another banger by the phenomenal peu, this is the perfect mix of amusing and touching with one of my all-time fave Dracos. the prose is incredible and engaging as per: vibrant, clever, full of personality and with a refreshing take on mpreg that got me kicking my feet in joy. the smooth, effortlessly funny dialogue is a masterpiece in itself, but ah! the sweetness :')

Fine-Fractured Halo by @rainjulyx (E, 29k)

For Harry, it all starts on July 31, 1999 and ends on July 31, 2019. Twenty years of longing, love, and pain in no particular order.

I don’t usually go for unhappy endings but something about this fic lured me in and I felt completely changed after reading it. brace yourself for a quiet, heart-wrenching look into Harry and Draco’s situationship over the span of 20 years of longing and waiting. love the melancholy vibe and the complexity of an unreliable narrative. this story opened a hole inside my chest and stayed with me for a long, long time.

god knows how this fic is still so underrated because it’s easily on my top 3 of 2024: sexy, moving, thought-provoking, funny and so very romantic and entertaining. I wanna live inside this universe and learn everything about quirky artist Draco and cute smitten Harry getting all curious and hungry for him. their dynamics are captivating, light and fun until the tenderness hits you right in the face. vibrant world building, brilliant cast, perfect dialogue and decadent hot smut - this fic delivers absolutely everything and you need to go read it right now.

I've inhaled everything garage has written last year and it was hard to pick one for this list, but I knew it had to be this banger. fuck buddies my beloved! this is an immersive and satisfying ride and I love how their relationship slowly unfolds to the reader. seeing them so young and stupid was nostalgic, aching and bittersweet at once, but I wasn’t expecting to be so moved by the romance! a brilliant character study, full of tension and heart.

While there are hearts in this world James hasn’t minded breaking, Sirius’s has never been one of them.

trust LQT to ruin me with this ship, which I so carefully avoid hoping to dodge the devastation. but it only takes James and Sirius sharing one brain cell and being all hot and wanton for each other and here I am, dead and buried. this has LQT's trademark of insanely hot smut dripping with angsty feels. the characters are so dear and full of heart, and I can’t handle the amount of desire, trust and fond familiarity they share.

my favorite Dronarry of the year, this fic was such a unique experience! a masterclass in short form, as per sweet’s usual. such a delicious and expertly crafted foreplay, the mounting tension swallowed me whole and left me at the edge of my seat yearning for more. I need this flirty Ron in my bed life, jfc. the car sequence is one of the best executed scenes I’ve ever read, with such a distinct, sexy dream-like atmosphere. instant classic!

Three's a Crowd (But Four is a Party) by @kbrick (E, 7k) - Harry/Draco/Pansy/Blaise, endgame Drarry

Pansy and Draco have been together for ages. Kind of. They don't sleep together any more, but they do sleep with men together. It's complicated.

also known as the pwp that made me tear up with feels for Pansy & Draco, this is a beautiful and moving love letter to their friendship. I love the layers behind their co-dependency, it’s a really nuanced dynamic while also being a deliciously and self-indulgent poly smutty treat. the sex sequence is smoking hot and a feast for the eyes, with such sweet Drarry chemistry! beautiful and immensely satisfying from beginning to end.

Wield Me by @tackytigerfic (E, 10k) - Drarry + Teddy

A little story about learning to strike while the iron is hot.

I’ve already poured my heart out about this fic on a dedicated rec post but suffice to say this is the tenderest, most creative short I’ve read last year. the rich and detailed world building is absolutely jaw dropping, and all characters are so lovable and fascinating. I’m obsessed with pining blacksmith Draco, and very impressed by how Tacky successfully includes my beloved Teddy in the equation while keeping this a legit (and very much romantic!) Drarry love story. so smooth, so moving. witchcraft

yep, this is the Seinfeld AU I didn’t know I needed! this fic is so incredibly funny, original and engaging - a brilliant homage to the show’s silly, chaotic ecosystem and cleverly adapted to incorporate elements from the HP universe. I just couldn’t decide between laughing my ass off at the unique brand of humor, falling in love with this sweet Harry or getting all hot and bothered for the Dronarry sexual tension omg

Worth a Thousand Words by @fluxweeed (E, 18k) - Dron

TIL wizards in Britain can avoid ward duty on the grounds of homosexuality. To avoid any false applications, wizards applying for this exemption must provide multiple pictures of themselves receiving anal intercourse with a clearly visible face.

a recent Dron fave, this sexy af and delightful fic translates the ship's essence perfectly: hilarious, scorching hot and a bit unhinged. the absurd premise serves the hottest and most entertaining "fuck first, talk later" trope with the right amount of sass, horny and sweet pining. the fic that introduced me to El’s writing - my new age gap champion - had me on the floor just a few paragraphs in. this masterpiece covers everything that make this ship deliciously dirtybadwrong: Harry’s sweet longing, Sirius’s spiraling want and guilt clashing with the desire to give Harry everything he wants, the constant grasp for some control while toeing the line that gets blurred, then completely obliterated. exquisite build up and scorching sex scenes, so heated and satisfying!

Notes: This is my first attempt at something following a prompt - specifically, "Trick or Treat" for the 2023 TWST Rarepair Halloween event. I'm trying to get more comfortable/practiced with writing prose (which is why this wasn't posted on the 30th... oops), and only vaguely ended up following the prompt. I'm fairly happy with how this little piece turned out, though!

Floyd wanted to take a break. 

It was Halloween, and all he had done the entire week was work, work, work. Getting costumes ready, decorating, helping with their dorm's presentation, plus cooking and serving at the Lounge, all on top of normal classes? 

Sure, it was fun, especially getting to show off Octavinelle's cool setup, and 'taking care of' those misbehaving visitors. But now? Everything felt draining and boring, and Floyd simply wanted to leave, which sucked because the actual Halloween party had just started!  

Maybe he should just ditch and go back to his dorm; being in a funk when everyone else is having fun around you is not enjoyable.  He slumped down on a bench and unwrapped a sweet he had picked up earlier, before wrapping it up again. Ugh, not even in the mood for that candy he wanted only a few minutes ago. 

As he shoved the sweet back into his pocket and was about to get up from the bench to leave, Floyd heard a rustle behind him. Someone was quietly humming, and… laughing? The sound gradually moved to his side, towards the empty side of the bench.  

“Trick or treat~”

Floyd turned to face the voice. "Listen, man, I'm not in the mood to—” he froze, staring at the figure beside him. “Hang on a second, where's your body!?"

A toothy smile came to the face of the head that currently floated beside Floyd. "Oh, it's here.... or maybe it's there." A pair of hands materialized on either side of this boy's head, followed by the rest of his body. 

“I'm just kidding. Mind if I take a seat? I’d like to rest up before I keep purrowling around and startling people.”

Floyd blinked, then raised an eyebrow. “Uh, go for it.” 

This guy was... weird, and it was hard to tell if he'd be annoying, or interesting. "You don't go here, do ya? At least, I’ve never seen you before. And you’re no ghost, either.”

The cat-like boy shook his head, his jewellery jingling softly. "I'm just passing through for the festivities and collecting treats. Scaring some people, too. That’s loads of fun. And it's always nice to see my friends let loose." 

Floyd had a vague memory surface. "Ohh... you must be that RSA boy who's friends with Sea Turtle and Goldfishie." 

"'Sea Turtle' and 'Goldfishie', hey? Those are good names for my green and red friends. Cats are known for liking fish." He leaned forward, his grin growing. “Artemiy Artemiyevich Pinker. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

Floyd nodded, “Floyd Leech. It's nice to meet you, too.” He looked curiously at the boy beside him, taking in his shaggy hair, piercings, and impish smile.

"You're not what I expected.” Floyd smiled, "But you seem fun, Catfish. I didn't think Goldfishie would get along with someone so... interesting."

Che'nya's eyes lit up slightly. "Catfish? Heh heh heh, most people call me Che'nya, but I guess that works. And I’ve heard some… interesting stories about you, too."

He stretched his legs out in front of him, leaning back with his arms behind his head as he sighed. "But yeah, I don't think Riddle could shake me if he tried." 

"I'm almost jealous." Floyd tipped his head slightly. "Most of the time, Goldfishie likes to swim away before I can play with him."

Che'nya laughed, "Well, if you're wondering, he 'swam off' that way." He pointed off to the side. “Just don’t be rough with him. I don’t like people mistreating my friends.”

Floyd looked off into the crowd where he had pointed, and let out a small laugh. “Alright, good to know. Maybe I’ll find him later, if I feel like it”, he smiled and sat back. “And Goldfishie’s stronger than he looks, but I guess you’d know that.”

Che’nya nodded, then leaned closer with a mischievous glint in his eye. "You know, I bet we could do something that would really surprise him.” 

Floyd turned slightly towards Che’nya, and flashed a smile. “Yeah, we probably could. I think we should talk more in the future, Catfish. You seem pretty fun.” 

Che’nya grinned, “You seem pretty fun, too.”

"Well,” he stretched his arms above his head. “I think I’m going to go and find some more treats… and play some more tricks tonight. I'll catch you around, Floyd." 

With a haunting giggle echoing in his ears, Floyd watched as the boy beside him faded into nothingness, just the same way he had arrived. 

What a weird guy.

Floyd unwrapped the candy he had pocketed earlier, then popped it into his mouth. Maybe this party was worth staying at after all.

Dark Cacao x Moonlight?

I finally got off my ass and drew him, so finally, this is Midnight Choco Cookie

I say all that because I have had his backstory figured out for probably over a year at this point, I just never got around to drawing his design

Okay, so basically the story of Midnight Choco’s origin is that Dark Cacao Cookie had wished for a child (MC is supposed to be older than Dark Choco, so Cacao doesn’t have a kid yet at this point). Moonlight heard his wish, and felt moved by his sincerity, so she decided to grant that wish and then created and sent Midnight Choco down to him from the stars

Moonlight and Dark Cacao aren’t together in this universe, it’s just that due to making Midnight with her magic, he’s also got some of her dough in there too. She’s basically more like a magic donor

Midnight Choco here is a warrior in the World of Dreams, and he spends his days battling nightmares, whether they come to harm train passengers or the individual Cookies having those dreams. And in the latter case, he usually tries to talk with and help those Cookies overcome those fears. He’s basically like Princess Luna in Friendship is Magic

He’s got some sort of helmet and also moniker for his nightmare fighting talents, but I haven’t really figured out what those are yet, so just know he has them. He’s incredibly powerful and a skilled fighter, but he’s also a very kind and sweet soul, just wanting to help those with the power he wields

However, not all is well with Midnight Choco. As far as he’s aware, he’s merely a construction of the Dream World to protect itself, like many others that inhabit and maintain it. He never leaves the Dream World. Not only that, but he has no real memory of having any sort of family. He feels some form of connection with the Slumbering Moon, but has never quite traveled to meet her

The truth of Midnight Choco is that he has in fact, been in a coma for the past 25-30 years of his life, slumbering within the walls of the Black Citadel

He grew up with his father, being raised in the Black Citadel and learning the ways of the sword from him. His extraordinary origins and seeming connection with the stars also led to him having quite an amount of stories surrounding him, being “the prince born from the stars, gifted to the king from the heavens itself”, among other things

When he was a teenager, Dark Choco was baked, and he got along pretty well with his little brother, for what time they had together

But then a couple years later, one night, Midnight Choco went to sleep, but never woke up. That following day it was assumed he had simply overslept, but as the day, and inevitably following days went on, it became increasingly concerning. He was still alive, and seemingly fine, but he wouldn’t wake up. Dark Cacao tried methods both physical and magical, but nothing could be done. The circumstances were made even more confusing by the fact that no one knew what caused it, because there was no trace of any poison or curses in his body, or anything strange that had happened recently, Midnight simply went to sleep and didn’t wake up

He has stayed this way ever since, and Dark Cacao has him kept in a room under constant watch, should someone attack him or if he potentially wakes up. He visits him often

What actually happened to Midnight Choco is that he accidentally awakened his power to go into the World of Dreams, and in the process of doing so, since he had done it incorrectly, gave himself amnesia, basically starting his life over in the Dream World and becoming the fighter of nightmares he is today, and subsequently believing he comes from the World of Dreams

He can in fact, break this spell and wake back up in the real world, but he doesn’t know he has this ability, nor does he believe he comes from the real world, so he wouldn’t go looking for a way to access this power. Though perhaps one day, he’ll learn the truth and wake up

He’s met both his father and his brother within their dreams and nightmares, but neither parties really recognize each other, due to dream weirdness and Midnight’s knight attire covering his face. He is semi aware of what’s been going on in the Dark Cacao Kingdom, like Dark Choco’s banishment, Caramel Arrow, Affogato and the like, but it’s basically been pieced together from the secondhand dream accounts, and due to his amnesia he doesn’t feel much personal connection to these events for himself, he just knows some of what’s going on in the real world

And I think that’s about it on Midnight Choco’s character. Wow I really did have a lot to say. Well, on to design things

So I got the name Midnight Choco from an ice cream flavor that I think I’ve seen around. It’s mostly because it’s chocolate and has night connections, but it works

So I admit, he doesn’t look as great as I have been hoping he would, but he has a design now, so I should just be happy with that

I admit, I didn’t really know what I was doing with his armor, I was just kind of trying to make it look good. The feet may not be great though. ToA Dark Choco ended up being a good reference for me

I originally wasn’t going to have gold, but all the saturated dark blues were getting too much, so it breaks up the colors

His sword is supposed to be like a clock hand. I originally drew it for Dusk Choco, but I thought it might look cooler on Midnight, since he’s the one descended from a Legendary and all. But it was a matter of copy/paste, so I don’t know how good it looks on him. But drawing a weapon was the main reason I put off drawing him, so it’s fine I suppose

I really wanted to add some gold gradient to the pants, but it just never looked right, so they have to stay just plain. Though I did change them and subsequently his hair to be a dark purple, so it looks a bit better

I honestly don’t really know what to say in this section. He may not be my best, but he at least has a design, and it isn’t the worst thing ever, so it’s fine

And yeah, that’s Midnight Choco. I think I’m too attached to him honestly, I want fanfiction of him. But yeah, I hope you enjoy him yourselves

Batkids as AO3 users

Dick - I don't think he'd be a writer. He just don't give me the vibes, ya know? He would, however, read fics about people he knows. And himself. He's deep in superhero fandom, and at some moment he gets super invested in some rarepair and actually menages to set them up. I also think as a teenager he would stumble upon some E rated fic for someone he knows, then promise himself he'd never touch it again, and then a few years later he reads them a lot, is just super secretive and guilty about it. He does not, however, touch Batman E rated fics with a ten foot pole.

Tim - you'd think he'd write Hero RPF, huh? No. He's deep into Formula 1 RPF. He writes, he reads, he's just very active in fandom. Most of his works are some kind of Formula 1 murder mystery.

Jason - he is the one from Hero RPF. He doesn't read it, he just writes it. In various AU's, ranging from some inspired by his crazy adventures to those from classic literature. When he was still Robin, he wrote Pride and Prejudice Superbat fic, that became crazy popular. After ressurection he sweared he wouldn't touch it, but after checking it out once and realising how tragic his writing style was, he rewrites the whole thing. He reads fics from fandoms he does not know the original works of. He finds a fic he likes, and learns things from it. Then he spirals deep into fandom. Like many of Batfam fans I imagine. That's why he doesn't write, because he feels he can't without knowing the original, and he sure as hell ain't watching some kids show called Ben 10.

Babs - I think her beginnings were in something like Twilight of DCU. She would regret it forever. Currently she's involved in some shows she watches when on break from work and Oracle. I'm not really into TV series but maybe something like Bridgertons or The Boys or something like that. She writes only one-shots and is active on Tumblr. She has like a thousand bookmarks and she posts fic recs with the most wild analysis of writing style, plot consistency and just vibes. She stays away from any RPF's, but esoecially Superhero RPF. She's got it enough on day to day basis thank you very much.

Steph - that girl post Robin writes the most sick gore body horror fics change my mind. And she does it in fandom's you would least expected. She also writes Spoiler/Batgirl fics, that are really fluffy but also full of action and actually made the pairing wildly known.

Cass - she reads everything Steph writes for Spoiler/Batgirl. Steph does not know Cass knows she writes them. Cass is really charmed. She tried writing one, but it came out really dark and she didn't like how clumsy it was and gave up on trying to be an author. She reads heavy angst, crack, or Steph's Spoiler/Batgirl fics, nothing else. She's the person that leaves very short but very sweet comments on literally averything she likes.

Duke - that boy is in the same circles as both Tim and Dick. He actually finds out it's Tim that writes his favourite Formula 1 fics as Tim finds out it's Duke that leaves those super insightful comments on them that start's conversations with author and other readers. They have one talk about it and then forcefully forgets about it and continues as it was. He writes Batman and Robin and Robin Gang fics. He's really good at it, and that's how he found Duck Grayson. Not that any of them knows that's the other on the other side of the screen. And yes, he's Steph's beta reader, and she's his. They don't talk about it, it's just how it is.

Damian - he reads Batman and Robin fics but only about himself. He also draws fanart and makes comics about Batman and Robin (himself). Later he gets involved in Teen Titans fandom, then the Justice League one, and suddenly he's a wildly known fanartist in the whole Hero RPF community. And he did draw a fanart for Jason's fic ones. They both don't know it's the other. He also gives aby superhero an emotional support fictional pet. Dick think it's adorable. (He was the one that introduced Damian to fandom.)

spare some yurika thoughts in these trying times, kind sir?

Believe it or not, this one's a rarepair to me. I don't do a lot of thinking on their dynamic, because it's just kind of a settled thing in my head.

I think Monika from the outset is sorta wary of Yuri, because she finds it tough to really figure out what she's thinking, and she's a bit...off. To put it more bluntly, Yuri's autistic and socially awkward as hell and Monika's not quite sure how to respond to that. Sayori puts it as her being put off because she "can't take the lead", and I think that's fairly apt, but to put it another way, I think there's a kind of control that Monika is able to maintain when she has a conversation with someone which Yuri's entire demeanor breaks. It's hard to really elaborate on all of what I mean by that; Yuri tends to be fairly literal, but due to a combination of anxiety and general shyness, she tends to bury the lede on what her actual intent is most of the time when she says something, and a lot of very important context to what she's feeling and thinking goes unsaid, which makes it significantly harder to follow her thinking and know what to expect from her. This is all just illustrating more clearly to me that I need to finish collating all of my thoughts with regards to why I so strongly headcanon Yuri as autistic, but the bottom line of all of this is that if you don't actually get Yuri's vibe from the outset, it can be very difficult to follow along with her thought process and stay on the level with her. This provides a lot of difficulty for Monika, because she's frankly just uncertain what to make of it.

She can clearly see that Yuri is a very awkward and shy person, and as a consequence, she feels some deep sympathy for her and tries her hardest to make her feel included and make sure the club can be a good space for her to find joy in, but she also lacks the simple confidence that Sayori has in order to bridge the gap, at least at first. Do I think this might be emblematic of some other potential neurodivergent tendencies in Monika? Dunno, honestly. Haven't given too much thought to it. Still think about that moment of divine inspiration telling me Monika had a stutter as a kid....

Anyway, that's their starting impression. Well, at least, that's Monika's starting impression. I think Yuri has a decidedly different view of Monika, because despite herself, and despite all of what had been going on in Understanding up to that point, she found herself opening up to her completely when they had their conversation. That had a lot to do with the way Monika was able to frame their roles in that conversation, and I think that particular ability of communication (debate club rhetorical skills comin in clutch) is why the two of them are able to basically just click after that point.

I think it's those communication skills that Monika has that's able to really break Yuri's shell wide open and leads to her being more comfortable in general in the Literature Club. Sayori's the one who's really able to make it all work, but Monika's particular ability to recognize the way to frame the conversation to make Yuri comfortable, then to actually identify the problem, the solution, and the way to express that to Yuri, all while remaining on level with her and not talking down to her, really showcases the kind of person that Monika is, at her core, and the entire thing clearly makes a positive impact on Yuri.

Even besides the immediate results, Yuri makes it clear at this moment that she's glad she has someone like Monika who not only listens to her and provides meaningful, honest feedback, but does her best to make her feel comfortable and provide an open and safe space for this kind of dialogue. She says it herself--she's "really bad at this kind of critical thinking", and really appreciates having someone who's able to help her through this process. That sort of thing is typically easy for other people, so it's not something you'd typically ask for help with. It's probably embarrassing on a certain level to ask for help with. Yet with Monika, it happens naturally, and there's no shame in it at all.

Monika might not still perfectly understand Yuri or be able to follow her train of thought easily, but with this, she has more ground to actually work with, which makes it easier on her, and past this point, based on how things progress, I think it's clear that the kind of honest and easy communication that Yuri shared with Monika has led to her feeling more comfortable around her in general, and that's more and more true as time passes, I'd say. Monika just kinda has this way of talking to you that makes you feel like--whatever it is, whatever it's about, you feel included, and you feel safe speaking your mind. And I think that sort of thing, more than anything else, is something Yuri appreciates.

...Mm, I got a bit deeper into analysis there than I intended. I need to read back through the Side Stories and finish my thoughts on Yuri already, it's a new year, I ought to clear my slate. I also just kinda feel like it's been so long that I'm losing touch with the source material.

Anyway, I feel like Yuri and Monika just kinda vibe with each other. They're the kind of couple that are able to literally just sit in silence for hours without any problems. Yuri in general I feel like would prefer nonverbal expressions of love, so she'd probably tend towards little physical moments while sharing the same space, and she'd definitely leave a loooot of little love notes and gifts around. The kind of thing where she has a smile on her face the whole time preparing it, but makes sure she's not nearby whenever Monika would discover it, because that's entirely too embarrassing. Monika, of course, would chase her down anyway, because that's entirely too sweet not to kiss her for. She'd save every note, no question.

Monika's definitely leading a lot of the conversations here, and that involves a lot of idler conversation and just saying stuff that comes to mind, with a whole lot of Yuri's responses being exceptionally simple, or straight up just little hums. "Mhm." "Hm." "Oh, huh." There are, however, of course, moments where Yuri can't help but go on a tangent about how this underrated side character from a new series she's been reading is finally getting her own spin-off and they're finally exploring the history of the far-off little known kingdom she's from which is based on East Asia and it's really interesting because the author references a lot of little details from real world history interspersed with a little flavor about how the magic system changed it and she's been keeping track of every little detail about the kingdom up to now and finally they get to see all of how it is and she's so hyped about it--and the entire time Monika is just smiling and nodding, giggling a little bit, not necessarily at the actual subject matter, but more of how adorable Yuri looks when she's infodumping about things she likes.

I might have more thoughts as time progresses, but yknow. Like I said, I really need to reread over the Side Stories....[STAY TUNED!], [BIG SHOT].

Okay, I’ve spent the whole @sandman-rarepair-fest with tragic relationships, poetry and being serious.

And while this relationship is also… tragic, it’s neither poetic nor to be taken seriously, although a small group of us are fully committed to the cause: Behold, the crack ship! Morpheus x The Helm! For the Monsterfucker prompt.

(It’s highly advisable to read part one first, but they can sort of exist independently. Just not as well 🤣)

If you always wanted to know what's so special about Dream's relationship with his Helm (capital H on occasion), this might provide some answers. Or raise more questions than you ever dared to ask...

Excerpt:

Desire had felt… things for a short while but shrugged the sensations off. Until they became impossible to ignore. Because he wanted something without their doing (although what comes first, or who, was sometimes hard to tell, but not to get lost in details at this point, dear reader). In lieu of ridiculous desires like “something beyond my function, blah blah”, it would usually be shaped like a woman. Since Desire had given him Killalla (and maybe, just maybe, taken her away again, which still made them chuckle), he had developed a bit of a kink for female-shaped mortals. Well, they hadn’t all been mortal, but the “female-shaped” still stood. And because of the mere fact that their brother was so painfully strait-laced (we suggest the spelling “straight-laced” here, dear reader), it came as a bit of a surprise to feel those decidedly different vibes. Dream wanted something. But it wasn’t a woman, or anything remotely female-shaped. It was…

What the heck was it?

Desire concentrated really hard.

It seemed to be something forged in the fever dream of a blacksmith who took his inspiration from a lobster and a nightmare. Something otherworldly, something with a spine like the tail of a crustacean. Truly, if a lobster decided to pursue a career in gothic architecture and at the same time became some sort of… headgear, it would probably look like this.

Desire first rolled their eyes but then felt their breath catching. “It’s his fucking helm,” they muttered. “Please give me a break. He wants to fuck his helm…”

Brother Dream, master of the subconscious, running his hand tenderly, with a slight shake, over the spine of that ludicrous thing. Desire laughed out loud, but the laugh was short-lived, because things began to unravel. Rapidly…

Men's Basketball RPF AO3 Tag: A Look at the BBall RPF Fandom Throughout the Years

With the end of 2024, I bring you a long update on the major nba rpf charts I made throughout the year. This year had record numbers with the most fics uploaded to the tag since 2022 (!!), and I'm excited for you to see all the stats of our small fandom. 🔥

2024 had the most fic uploaded/updated to the tag – ever.

If you were reading bball fic on ao3, then you might have noticed that compared to 2023, there were more fics on average per month to read (22 fics on average per month in 2024 vs 11 fics per month in 2023).

Significant events for 2024 include Nova Knicks Mania, the tag hitting 1k fics, and the Happy HoliNBGays Collection. The HoliNBGays Collection helped to break the record of most fic ever uploaded/updated to the tag in a single month*.

After June, the number of fics uploaded each month remained around 25+ (except for the yearly October slump)!

*Every month, the monthly numbers do end up falling by 1-5 fics, but this is because of fics getting updated and/or deleted. Still, the HoliNBGays event helped to break the record considering that there were about 12 fics uploaded to that collection on December 31st (and then an additional 5 fics uploaded to the collection on January 1st, but since we're dealing with 2024 numbers, I've left those out).

Steph/Klay was still the most popular pairing despite the divorce, and Steph/Bron had a boost thanks to the Olympics!

The major spike in 2022 for Steph/Bron is due to one ao3 writer uploading 35 fics for that pairing.

In the previous chart, I mentioned that the maximum amount of fics for a rarepair had only ever reached twelve fics in a single year. The Luka/Kyrie ship broke that amount by having eighteen fics uploaded to the tag in a single year.

The Nikola Jokic/Jamal Murray ship had been in the tenth spot on the previous chart, but now the Luka/Kyrie ship is at number ten.

The Jays now take the eighth spot on the chart, whereas previously they were at ninth!

Kyrie Irving was the most multi-shipped character this year – about four out of ten ships have Kyrie!

Most of the top ten ships focus on teammates, but Olympic pairing Haliburton/Embiid sort of break this rule - while they were briefly teammates on Team USA, they are usually opponents in the NBA, making them an unique pairing.

don't have the spare brain cells to actually write for Kinktober this year, but I am a fan of brainstorming elaborate kink scenarios for niche ships, and thus here is my informal offering of

11 Dragon Age F/F Kinktober Rarepair/Crackship Concepts

*not smut writing - just a listing of kinks matched with a ship and a basic scenario

Drugs/high sex, armpit kink - Briala/Celene. Coming in hot with a concept which spake itself to me once the factoid that Celene is apparently a fan of the wyvern drug mentioned in that DA2 DLC entered my psyche and promptly combined with the scene from Portrait Of A Lady On Fire in which that pair of blonde-brunette French lesbians sensually rub drugs into each other's armpits, which rules. Blah blah freedom, flying, seizing liberation where they could find it in this narrow world, impending heterosexual marriage, lesbo-eroticism, etc. Celene is the one more into the armpit part (obviously?), perhaps this is the first time she dares to breach it, and Briala is happily along for the ride. A fun romp as they do deserve a break from the drama and angst sometimes.

All manner of titty play/worship, against a wall/standing, size difference - Neve/Harding. IDGAF what the companion romances turn out to be, their tension is simmering based on the early clips and Harding just so happens to be boob height to Neve. They may never agree on anything except that beating people up is cool, but they can find some common ground when frustration comes to a head and Harding detects Neve's lack of bra and Neve scouts out whether Harding is strong enough to hold her up (she is). If this occurs early enough in Veilguard, then I think Harding would be the bruised-up one, so Neve could look down tenderly and caress her bruised cheek in a moment of sincere connection that she would then reject because she's not open to vulnerability yet and makes it weird (this is also kink).

First time, instruction/talking through it - Bethany/Merrill. Bethany's curiosity about sex with women is frankly cute and hot and I think Merrill would be both an extremely funny and extremely sweet person to share a first time with. Perhaps they're both left out of the Deep Roads expedition and, resenting that the others treat them like kid sisters, they hang out and one thing leads to another. This would also be part of my Merrill Fucks A Relatively Average Amount But Just Doesn't Know Human Social Norms/Slang agenda. Also Merrill's accent is hot and should be recognized for this.

Mutual masturbation, comfort sex - Josephine/Minaeve. This ship lives in my head rent-free for no other reason that Haven is so cold and that little office they shared is so warm, eventually, when they let each other in a little bit. However they don't get very far before the attack on Haven. Rattled, they find each other in Skyhold and find that warmth and comfort in each other again, even if neither of them feels quite ready to touch/be touched by the other. Romantic!

Furs, lingerie/stockings, hand/finger kink - Svarah Sun-Hair/Celene. What if those Avvar furs ARE the shit and Orlesians DO want them? And perhaps there's a demonstration in order? This encounter would in the Frostbacks for a flimsy reason because it would be too cold for Celene's anemic bones. Thus Svarah has no choice but to drape her in sexy furs and perhaps take a tour of her delicates while she's at it (they are beautiful but foolhardy), and her tough calluses would honestly put so many runs in Celene's dainty stockings, but she probably wouldn't mind too much because she's very into hands and Svarah's are so big and strong.

Rough sex, hair-pulling - Briala/Athenril. The main kink here is actually Briala trying to rebound after dumping Celene and finding out what it's like to fuck with someone who's not delusionally obsessed with her. But also I think she deserves the opportunity to get just totally railed by someone who'd be willing to at least slap her ass in public. Hair-pulling is important specifically because Celene loved tenderly stroking her hair. It would be a mixed bag of a semi-transactional situationship with a scumbag kind of like fucking your dealer (this too is kink) but at any rate, she's getting some quality D AND low-cost fenced supplies for her alienage relief project, so it's a win for Briala overall.

Restraints, seduction, flip-flopping power dynamics - Isabela/Cassandra. So what if Seeker Pentaghast caught up with another/different friend of Hawke, who is less cooperative than Varric and thus needed to be cuffed, but that wouldn't stop her from turning that situation around. Isabela won't betray Hawke this time by yapping, but she can deploy her mouth in other ways to distract the Seeker. This is certainly not what Cassandra had in mind, but it's perhaps too appealing of a flimsy porn scenario like in her books for her to resist too much.

Anal play/butt plug, accidental stimulation - Celene/Morrigan. Allegedly butt plugs were touted as a treatment for anxiety/depression in days of yore, and Celene loves woo-woo nonsense, and the civil war/getting dumped is hard on her, and Morrigan probably has an entire grimoire about the magical-medicinal applications of butt stuff. The narrative of this would be that it starts played completely straight (it's not sexual, it's medical care obviously) but it gradually becomes undeniably erotic but neither of them are willing to acknowledge it because Morrigan thinks she's straight and Celene is clinging to a shred of dignity despite the crystal plug in her ass. They leave this encounter feeling weird and unsatisfied, which imo is essential for at least 1 entry in any kinktober collection.

Spanking, "good girl", praise kink - Leliana/Josephine. Leliana NEEDS to be some woman's goodest girl in the world, and in the Inquisition, there's nobody she could trust but her good friend Josie to help fulfill this need. An encounter of vulnerability for them both as this also isn't Josie's comfort zone, but something to learn and explore together. Actually pretty romantic imo.

Period sex - Merrill/Aveline. Take the most and least squeamish women on Hawke's team, shake em up, add in some vague justification like Merrill trying to help Aveline with cramps in accordance with Dalish conventional wisdom (but also Merrill has always wanted to climb that and takes the opportunity).

Sex pollen, grinding/dry humping, not quite hatesex (resentsex?) - Neve/Rana Savas. Back on this ship agenda, the most important question for any ship defined by unresolved sexual tension is, under what circumstance could they have fucked before but STILL have unresolved sexual tension? The answer is obviously that Neve led Rana into some bullshit and they got sex pollen'd. "Fine, but I'm gonna complain about it the whole time" type of encounter where they're so done with each other but they gotta grind it out regardless because the pollen demands body contact even if they keep it above clothes because it's business, not pleasure. But then a hint of caught feelings seeps in after because it's hard to sustain high resentment for a sexy woman once you've smelled her post-sex pheromones and maybe it wouldn't have been so bad if they'd actually touched each other after all. Maybe they scratched that immediate itch but now they're under each other's skin for real... but that's a problem for later.

okay listen. I get the urge to talk about my favorite life series ship like it's Canon in every season...BUT. THAT HAS NEVER ONCE BEEN THE CASE.

Yes, Jimmy would be upset if Tango canaried (technical scientific term for that). Everyone would be- even I would be, and I've never watched a single one of his videos. Canarying sucks, and it hurts. Of course I would be upset. THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT I THINK JIMMY WOULD BREAK DOWN SOBBING FROM A CHARACTER STAND POINT. They have had only like... THREE on screen interactions. One is Tango murdering a man infront of Jimmy and another is Tango cheerfully burning down something one of Jimmy's teammates worked very hard on. WildLifeChara!Jimmy has more reason to hate or be afraid of WildLifeChara!Tango than to be madly in love with him.

I promise you, if Tango had offered Jimmy a life instead of Ren, people wouldn't shut up about for MONTHS. But, because it's Ren, somehow the interaction isn't NEARLY as homoerotic??? I understand having NOTP's, but the Jimmy/Ren ship doesn't even show up ONCE on ao3. Zero fics. ZE-RO. There's no reason to hate something that doesn't even exist.

This same concept applies for Flower Husbands as well- not just in Wild Life, and Secret Life and Limited Life and Last Life and Real Life though- in Empires.

I have no clue about Empires Season 1, but they barely interacted in Empires Season 2- and yet the amount of ship art I sift through on a weekly basis for my side blog is actually insane. Yeah, the few interactions WERE important, but I think Scott only flirted (in video) with Jimmy maaybbeeee three times. I have no idea what the count of that for streaming is, but I swear it is not enough to keep that number so inflated.

Although, honestly, this problem might just be affecting me because of my personal view on shipping- if it's in a context where it doesn't make sense for the characters to be romantically engaged, I won't read it or write it.

For example, my beloved Solidwood! I mostly get their vibes or read their fics from the following series: Evo, Last Life, New Life, Empires2, Secret Life. That's because those settings make sense! They are active, they are engaged, they have near constant interactions or very close base locations. It makes SENSE for them to be shipped. However, if you showed me art or fic of them in, say, Limited Life, I'd furrow my brow and tilt my head and say "no, that doesn't do anything for me." BECAUSE THEY HAVE ZERO REASON TO BE INVESTED ROMANTICALLY IN ONE ANOTHER THERE, AS A STAND ALONE SETTING.

Most of the major Jimmy ships, though, don't follow this rule. I can understand loving a ship so much you want to see it everywhere- but, I promise you, stepping back and looking at which characters actually have chemistry regarding the new setting and social system will do wonders... you won't have to think of new Au's to insert your favorite ship into a new setting... all ships will be your favorite ship (unless they give you the ick). Join the multishiper hivemind /j

No but honestly it's gotten to the point where I will like or dislike a creator/character of theirs by what ship is their most popular given the context of the setting. Like, Tango in Double Life? Awww the sweetie!! I love him :) and then Tango in Empires2 sets off alarm bells in my brain screaming at me. He is NOT meant to be here bringing that ship here, this is NOT its territory. Same problem for Scott in nearly damn near every SMP both Jimmy and him are in... except Wild Life because he's actually been pretty nice and not condescending or forcing on Jimmy. I guess also power imbalances in how fans view them is a major no-go for me...

TLDR; Lots of popular ships are inserted into settings without a thought for what that would mean for the setting and any changes in the established social connections, which gives OP the ick. I'm also not policing ships I'm just begging people to please either understand more ships using in setting context or list their AU details in the summaries of the fics. This goes hand in hand with misinterpreting characters in writing also... the more ships you like the more characters you will get to get good at writing!!!!

I'm filled with 3DS Brainworms so here's who I think all the Awakening kids would be retainers to if they were in Fates

Lucina/Marth- Xander? Maybe Ryoma if we're doing both countries. I have a hard time seeing her able to relax enough to not be next to the most important people if she had the chance. She'd be Corrin's retainer if that was an option. I kinda like Ryoma more than Xander cuz I'm picturing Saizo saying he doesn't trust 'Marth' because of his mask, without any sense of irony. Also Sakura just because I've seen adorable art of that rarepair and I'm on board.

M!Morgan- Leo, I think Leo and the Morgan's would have a nice dynamic where their presence is both comforting but also elevate Leo's insecurities since the Morgan's are skilled tacticians and his skills aren't as unique.

F!Morgan- Leo/Xander. Maybe Leo's official retainer but bothers Xander. I picture like once a week she has a presentation on the health benefits of killing your father or how to depose a tyrant. Never explicitly saying Xander should commit regicide but one can infer her meaning. Definitely way less subtle than her twin clone. Probably taking the most advantage of the "you fire one of us the others quit" vibe the Awakening kids have. Banned from visiting Corrin in the Northern Fortress.

Cynthia- Camilla, Camilla claimed her before they even proved their worth as fighters. Camilla would adore her and her dynamic with Beruka would be hilarious. She's also friends with Arthur, they need constant supervision together in case something goes horribly wrong.

Brady- Leo, I need him complaining about Leo sleeping at his desk and studying to exhaustion. Do ya wanna a hunchback like him?

Noire- Leo/Camilla. She's incredibly knowledgeable about magic despite being too frail to use it herself, pokes over Leo's shoulder and points out a mistake while bringing him a new cup of tea. Drives Leo up the walls. But also not all that confident and frail, Camilla just snaps her right up. The kind of person that Camilla likes most, one's that are dependent on her in some way.

Kjelle- (isn't she already one of Elise's retainers??) Honestly I know Effies personality is different in the Japanese version but since I'm not familiar with that I can only picture Kjelle's interactions being extremely similar to hers. Either Elise or Sakura, give Elise the beginning of a muscular knight Lady army/harem or I think Kjelle would fit in with Hana and Subaki's dynamic and she'd get a laugh out of knocking Subaki off his fly horse.

Laurent- Leo or Takumi, nerds herd together. I think he'd have a better chance of getting a spot with Takumi than most of the others simply because there isn't anything Takumi can hold against him, he's polite, invested in learning as much as he can(which means he'll likely come asking Takumi a lot and deferring to his expertise, playing into the vibe of Takumi's retainers being his fan club with a different reason than Hinata and Oboro, he looks up to Takumi's intelligence) and his outfit doesn't share any similarities to Nohr's fashion, his tits aren't out and he's not wearing black and purple(why I think the Morgan's wouldn't be able to get close to Takumi)

Gerome- Camilla, while he's the exact opposite of Camilla's main swinging range, he's solitary and doesn't react to praise like Severa, he does follow orders and can be a second pair of eyes to baby someone. Most likely on Elise duty any time she goes into the sewer city. Also he and Beruka nod at each other and go do their jobs. Best coworker Beruka's ever had. She leaves to go kill someone for Camilla and has a packed lunch for the way back. Minerva likes Beruka too.

Yarne- Xander or Hinoka, depending on which part of Yarne's cowardlyness you want to play with. Xander trusts Yarne both because despite all his anxiety he's never really the "unfeasible" type of anxiety and he breaks through his cowardlyness to protect those he cares about. A single "What do you think could go wrong" gets Xander a long way. Meanwhile Hinoka's retainers all have the vibe of her feeling the need to protect them instead and Yarne is PEAK failboy. Also play into Hinoka's more gentle and animal loving side with her brushing his rabbit form. Also Yarne/Camilla ship, she knows what she likes and it's a failure she can coddle and Yarne quickly learns that her arms are both the safest and most dangerous place he could possibly be.

Nah- Camilla/Leo/Corrin/Azura. No strong feelings on any of these, I think her dynamic with Camilla would be similar to Severa's where she's a little desperate for approval but to a lesser extent. I think she'd Like Leo but more of a book club/study buddy thing than serving him. I can see her sticking with Corrin in the Northern Fortress for both Dragon and Lilith reasons and I think she'd be a good Lilith-equivalent and friend for Azura, Naga knows she needs someone to talk to about the crazy stuff she knows that she can't tell anyone about.

What fandoms do you write in?

Various Star Wars media, though primarily Clone Wars, and also Stranger Things.

How many words have you published in 2024?

334,213, which. Good lord, that's a lot! A good 90K of that was written in 2023 and published in early 2024 but like. Still.

What are your top three fics you’ve written this year?

Well, it's hard to choose among the 21 (wut) fics I wrote in 2024, but I'll try!

Reasons to Celebrate is a Star Wars, Waxer/Boil hanahaki comedy, which is really its own advertisement, I think! The idea was so hilarious to me and writing it was a lot of fun.

Summer Lovin' Happened So Fast is a Stranger Things, Steddie one-shot. It is just chock-full of summertime vibes and I tried, as much as I could, to evoke a lot of sensory things that really bring me back to that season. Plus I think it's pretty cute!

The Farmhouse is a Star Wars, Cody/Fox story that was written for the 2024 Clone Bang! It was heavily inspired by a real place I got to visit and is a very different pace of story from most of my long fics, I think. Also I got to do a lot of fun worldbuilding!

What was your biggest pit of despair moment?

Woof. Well, in my hubrisambition this year I signed up for two big bangs which overlapped in the fall. And planned to write 50K+ fics for both. Somewhere in the middle I realized that that a) was a really bad idea and b) started to make writing feel a lot like a chore and less like a hobby.

Now, I do believe pretty strongly in the idea of writing even when you're not "feeling inspired" because muses are fickle, and generally I love writing for events and even thrive on deadlines. But it very quickly became a source of stress and really took a lot of the joy out of writing both fics, and even now I kind of struggle to love them as much as other things I've written. Lessons learned.

What have you learned?

Haha, well, not to bite off more than I can chew! And frankly I think I've learned my limits a bit, not just for events but for writing as a whole. I've been taking a break for a little while now and I think it's really helping. Gotta pace myself!

Did you beta any fics? Any faves you want to shout out?

I've never betaed, no.

What three fics have you read this year that you love?

Only three? Heartless, wicked, cruel! I will do my best.

all that's said in the low light by headlocket is a Call of Duty, Soap/Ghost fic that's just, ugh. Stunning. I don't usually go in for serious injury/chronic disability stories, not my cup of tea, but this one is so beautifully done and so sensitive without being preachy and so in-character in the most stilted, emotionally constipated way, hnnggg. What an absolute joy.

crystalizing clear as day (oh, i can picture you so easily) by the wonderful @inconocible is a Star Wars, Rex/Fives/Echo (with a side of Rex/Cody) story that takes place after Order 66. I don't think I'll ever get over the "pining for someone who's right in front of you" concept and this one really, beautifully delivers.

Undercover Work is an anonymously written Star Wars Rebels, Zeb/Kallus story that I adore for how it treats Kallus. The man is ruthless to a fault, even when he's working for the good guys, and the way he simply can't comprehend their relationship being anything other than transactional is as perfect as it is heartbreaking.

What ideas are percolating for next year?

Well, I'll be taking part in Waxer*Boil Month again this year, though I haven't started on those yet... And I've got a few things that I've started that I'm still hoping to finish in 2025 (stubbornly refusing to close the Gdocs tab counts as working on them, right?) including some additional scenes to my Steddie fic Maybe 10% Better and a TCW rarepair fic that I really really want to get out there.

So, I have given a few more detailed thoughts on most parents for Spider, so if anyone wants those just ask for those specific ones. Here I will just give basic thoughts.

Miles Quaritch; this one should be obvious. Bad, abusive, parent. Can never be a good one, their entire relationship at this point is built on manipulation and forced trauma bonding. He Patty Hearst'ed this child. The fandom is kidding themselves and it does make me upset.

Paz Socorro; this one is a tad more understandable, but the push to make Paz a sympathetic character confuses me. We only know canonical bad things about her. She could be anything though, she's a blank slate, so even though it isn't a headcanon I enjoy, it doesn't bother me.

Sully Family: I've made many longer posts about this, but they are my favorite Spider parents. Not only is it where the story intends to go, but it's so interesting. I love found familys, even when it hurts and it's a little fucked up, and that's just where he belongs in my opinion. They have the ability to understand him better than anyone else ever could.

Tonowari and Ronal: This one to me, while usually adorable, is like a fun little delusional fantasy. It's hard for me to get into because it feels so out of reality. That lovely cunty bitch Ronal is nEVER going to be nice to Spider. She is going to treat him like dirt next movie in the beginning, and it is going to break our little hearts. Obsessed with her, lol. Let her be the judgemental bitch she is.

Tsu'tey and Norm Spellman: These ones both mean the entire world to me, not gonna lie. Not as much as Spider Sully, but it's god damn close. It's like he's Spider Sully and still had a good childhood but still was raised with the Sully kids as their barnacle bestie, and can still be in any of his rarepairs. It makes my day. Someone write me one where Norm and Tsu'tey raise Spider tOGETHER, while being IN LOVE.
