The Amami Rabbit Island

So this has been vexing me for a while, since Amami rabbits are the only real wild rabbits of Japan and not only are they fucking endangered but also only live on two very far away islands south-west of the mainland. But I want to mention them in my fic and I was going a little fucking insane figuring out how or if at all.

Well, now that I've figured out the handwave-y way I'm going to explain seafaring rabbits and the unpredictability of where tf they hit shore, along with a quick hit of inspiration, I found a way and I'm excited!

So, if you want to avoid spoilers for the future fic, my rant is under the cut.

I want the crew of Tharnhain (name of the impromptu Hlessi Warren) to stumble upon the island of Amami and get captured by the local warren. Their leader? Fujirah, Queen of the Ancients.

Fujirah is not actually named after the mountain Fuji, that's not relevant to her. No, she is named after wisterias, the Japanese name for them being, you guessed it, Fuji (藤) Her owsla mostly contains female rabbits, though there is one male that is on par with the other female owsla, as he is of similar size and build of the females. The male's name is Ebine (エビネ), after the local orchid species on the island.

ヒカゲヘゴ, or Hikagehego is the commander of the owsla. Most of the soldiers under her refer to her as Commander "Hikage" (日陰) , meaning "shade", as it is both faster and a bit of an affectionate nickname, since the commander is quite sharp and witty in her demeanor.

コンロンカ, or Konronka, is one of the owsla that captures the protagonists. Not sure if the kanji is correct for all of these, had a hard time finding it for her, so feel free to correct me.

Shīroo, little Shī (シイ), is a juvenile that asks them all kinds of questions from where they are and where they are going. He wants to come along, but his mother forbids him. Toying with the idea of him sneaking off to join the group anyway, but nothing concrete yet.

The Warren is named Kinsakubaru (金作原) after the forest they live in, in a similar naming scheme to the way some of the warrens are named in WD, e.g. "Watership Down" and "Sandleford Warren".

All the names are based on the Japanese names of plant life on Amami island I could find. Seems a decent number of rabbit names in Watership are based on plants, flowers, and I think there's a Lapine name is based on a dent in the grass?

Not all the names are going to be this way, not all of them are going to be in Japanese since I don't actually speak or read the language, as much as that would help. However, I wanted at least some kind of nod to the origins of the "Paradise Island", and this is what I came up with!

Bio: The most arcane participant in the group. He specializes in analyzing his surroundings and situations in discrete manners; allowing him to make calls and quick decisions from a casual distance without anyone noticing his intent. Though in some occasions he voices some input when his team is strategizing, he's usually very quiet and rather plays by his own plans to further himself in the competition until all the teams are merged and the game is at its final act. Though he normally appears friendly and very relaxed around the other participants, there's moments when his skeptical nature surfaces when clues or unanswered questions appear during challenges. While keeping his plans hidden, he's seen to be quite patient with everyone's bizarre nature and tries to get along with them, especially towards the female participants; however it's never due to sexual tendencies in anyway. Despite his appearance, Rantaro is  more protective and understanding towards females because of his experience of being an older brother for his big family of 12 sisters. 

Goal: Willing to do anything to win the prize so that he could hire investigators, purchase rescue vehicles, get into contact with info brokers, or spend any amount of travel expenses/resources in order for him to find his family that's been missing for years. He'll look under ever single rock that's in the World if it meant that he could reunite with his family.

MEET THE RYUKYU MASKRAY, A NEW BLUESPOTTED RAY FROM JAPAN

Previously believed to be a single species, the common bluespotted stingray (Neotrygon kuhlii) it was found in 2016 to comprise a complex of several species distributed across the Indian and Pacific Oceans. However, a single species remained undescribed in Japanese waters due to a lack of research conducted in the area.

Now, researchers have finally described the Ryukyu maskray or Japanese Bluespotted Maskray (Neotrygon yakkoei) from Japan. The new species is a small stingray characterized by a greenish-brown body with a single dark, mask-like marking between the eyes, few small pale blue spots surrounded by dark brown outer rings. Genetically, it is distinct from other maskrays and is currently known only from Japan, inhabiting temperate waters from the Japan Sea and Pacific sides, including Hokkaido, Wakasa Bay, the Izu and Ogasawara islands, the Pacific coast of Japan from Sagami Bay to southern Kyushu, and the Osumi, Amami, Okinawa, and Yaeyama islands.

Despite the recent description of the Ryukyu maskray, much remains unknown about this new species, including its diet, biology, and ecological role. Further research is needed to understand its feeding habits, reproductive behavior, and the threats this ray faces.

• he's been preparing a very special gift for you for many, many months now and has had the day of your birthday marked down in all his calendars • "of course i remembered your birthday" he chuckles and plants a kiss on the top of your head. "how could i not? out of the 365 days in the year this is my favorite one." • even though you didn't remind him, he knew it was your birthday. i guess he just has his ways as a guy who's pretty savvy at a lot of things ;-) • "you should open up the present i got you babe. i need to see your pretty face light up with excitement" • inside the intricately wrapped box he hands to you there's a scrapbook. inside there are love notes and memorable photos of the two of you that were clearly well thought out. it must've taken him a while! • "wait.. wait.. that's not all, you think i wouldn't spoil you a little on your big day? c'mon baby, i know you know me better than that." he gives you a little wink as he hands you a small gift bag with crinkled paper sticking out at the top • you're pretty overwhelmed with emotion at this point, as the amount of effort that he's put into this is not really what you're used to. he reaches his arm around you to hold you while you dig into the bag. • "i've thought of you every time i've traveled this past year. when i visit new places, i try to find souvenirs that you'd like. so... what do you think?" • you hold up a necklace, bracelet, and a keychain that contain references to an island that he's visited recently • "i hope you love it, you know i just wanna make you happy. i love you. now, where do you wanna go for dinner? i'll take you anywhere, it's my treat." he puts one of his hands on your cheek, his expression soft as he leans his head in to give you a gentle kiss Shuichi Saihara:

"i got it all covered, just stand outside and i'll swing by to take you on an adventure." • at first you think to yourself, "well, shuichi didn't mention my birthday... does he know it's today? or are we just going on a date?" • once you get ready for the day out, your boyfriend waits outside for you just as planned. his entire face lights up when he sees you and he's blushing so hard you can see it through the tinted window of his car 😭 • "oh wow, uhm... you're so ... attractive..." he's stumbling on his words and is struggling to maintain eye contact with you as you get in the passenger side of his car. it's just the two of you and you put some songs on the aux as he drives you • "your outfit," he can barely focus on much else but you. "now, let's go have a good day. you deserve it after all" Kaede Akamatsu:

• you wake up on the morning of your birthday with approximately 50 message pings on your phone. they're all text messages from your girlfriend kaede- • one of the first things you read is "i'm so so sorry if i woke you up, but i needed to let you know that i'm thinking about you on this very special day... happy birthday my angel!" • the rest are all long, extensive messages about how much she loves and appreciates you, and how she's going to make this day memorable for you

• after getting ready for the day, she knocks on your door to come visit. she won't stop reminding you it's your birthday, making sure you feel the love you deserve • it's clear that she's been planning out what she wants to do to surprise you for literal months now • she planned a surprise party at her place that she's about to take you to, one with all your mutual friends that she's planned the events, catering, and activities for • "don't worry hon... i'm sure you'll love what's to come." she gives you a swift wink and kisses your cheek. • when you two arrive at kaede's place, you get surprised by all of your friends and a well decorated living room, kitchen, and hallway • "surprise! i thought i'd plan this out for you so i could make your day extra special... i love you so much, y/n. please never forget how much you mean to me, and to everyone else." • the rest of the day, kaede showers you with a ton of physical affection and makes sure everything goes according to plan. she even baked the cake from scratch and made sure to decorate it in a personable way for you :') • "okay look... i know the cake doesn't look professionally made but it's made with love" she laughs and she gives you a warm hug. the cake is actually really tasty, despite the slightly lopsided look <3

Searching all of Japan for handcrafted items that express its heart and soul, our proprietor, KASHIYUKA, presents things that bring a bit of luxury to everyday life. This time our trip took us to Amami Ōshima in Kagoshima prefecture, where we delved into a technique characteristic of the island called dorozome, mud-dyeing. It’s used to color the fabric that will be used for the local traditional kimono, called Ōshima tsumugi.

I would like to post again the marvellous cats of Tadashige Nishida. He was born in 1942 on Amami Oshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture. He studied at Chiba University. In the 1960s the artist went to Spain and to the United States of America for post-graduate studies in arts. Tadashige Nishida works in woodblock technique.

Kamui Woods' tragic backstory that was made into a documentary

I've got side character brainrot, so watch me make it everyone else's problem. Help me come up with some more ideas, or let me know your favorite theory!

THEORY #1:

He is a tree who gained a Quirk and sentience

(Kind of like what happened with Principal Nezu)

Personally am not a fan of this theory because I feel like his name and ambitions would be a little different or people would mention it more as jokes/jabs/or from flat-out astonishment.

But I'm not ruling it out.

THEORY #2:

His home faced the tragedy, he just lived through it.

He is from Kagoshima Prefecture, so using the vague location as a clue:

He could be from Yakushima:

(AKA, the island inspiring the forest in Princess Mononoke - could tie into his name translation "God of the Woods")

Has a vast forest with some of the oldest trees around

See: Yaku-sugi (Jōmon-sugi).

Has a lot of hot springs (not relevant, just happy for him)

Native with rhododendron

(See costume: if flowers are supposed to be rhododendron and not roses).

He could be from the Mangrove Primeval Forest on Amami Island:

Is tragedy related to typhoons, floods, volcanoes, or another type of natural disaster?

See driftwood compatibility: If ships/ water are involved, his wood Quirk could've allowed him to float to safety for several days, being enough hope in the face of tragedy to spark the documentary.

THEORY 4:

Pirates/ boat-related tragedy, also includes being marooned, held hostage, and gives him a newfound sense of justice against villains.

Buuut I feel like he would have maybe joined a mariner-related field if his hero origins involved pirates.

THEORY #5:

Wood was harvested for harsh winters without consent like a sort of body-farm situation that was eventually liberated.

Like if he had bad parents or his whole family was a part of some sort of servitude angle?

He only started counting his birthday/ age recently, so there are a number of reasons why he never celebrated it?

(A little too dark for me, and may be a little influenced by the DNA chambers Yamato Tenzo grew up with in Naruto.)

THEORY #6:

Abandoned in the woods and grew up as a little feral nature child.

Also plays into the "just started counting my age" angle.

EDIT: from the prototype sketch rough translations, this kind of sounds like what happened, though I don't know if the tragedy ends there or with his adopted family.

THEORY #7:

Related to his appearance.

Shinji is very secretive of his appearance, mainly his mouth area that is constantly hidden by a mask or scarf. It's possible, he just likes his privacy, buuuut... theories anyway:

He could be made of wood all over, have branch/limb-like teeth that are unsettling to others, a nutcracker jaw, Ghibli Forest Spirit face, or have a nod to a skin condition like Epidermodysplasia that he was ridiculed for as a kid, so now keeps his face hidden?

That's all the theories I think I've got. Feel free to share more if you have ideas too!

Kijimuna – Mischievous red-haired spectres

Kijimuna are legendary small tree spirits from the Okinawa Islands in Japan, who live in trees (generally old banyan trees). They are said to look about 3 or 4 years old and have red hair.

Another name for the kijimuna is bungaya, which means roughly large-headed. The Kijimuna are known to be very mischievous, playing pranks and tricking humans. One of their best-known tricks is to lie upon a person's chest, making them unable to move or breathe such as sleep paralysis. Even though the Kijimuna are tricksters, they have been known to make friends with humans.

They are skilled fish catchers and only eat the left or both eyes of the fish they catch. Therefore, if you become friends with a Kijimuna, you can always get a fish and become rich. They are good at diving and fishing and catch a lot of fish in seconds. But all the fish they catch have no eyes. They can also run around on the water surface and can stand on the water while carrying people.

They are extremely hatred of hot pot lids, octopus, chickens and human farts, and it is forbidden to let them near the Kijimuna. They also die (or are forced to move to another tree), if a nail is driven into the tree in which they live. They will take terrible retribution, including murder, against anyone who breaks these prohibitions.

Nevertheless, as long as one do not break these prohibitions, they are basically harmless to humans, and many lores say that they are "good neighbours" with humans.

[History of Ryukyu Islands (collective name for Amami Islands, Okinawa Islands, Miyako Archipelago and Yaeyama Archipelago)]

The Ryukyu Islands are known to have been inhabited by humans for about 32,000 years.

The Ryukyu Kingdom was a monarchy, existed in the southwestern islands of Japan for about 450 years, from 15th century to 19th century. It developed through diplomacy and trade with China, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asian countries, and the castle of the Ryukyu dynasty, Shuri Castle, was the political, economic and cultural centre of its maritime kingdom. In the late 19th century, the Japanese Government, dispatched troops to oust King Shoutai from Shuri Castle and proclaimed the establishment of Okinawa Prefecture (Ryukyu Disposition). Here, the Ryukyu Kingdom was destroyed.

Genetic studies have shown that populations in the Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa Islands, Miyako Archipelago and Yaeyama Archipelago) have no direct genetic link to mainland China or Taiwanese populations and have identical paternal lines to mainland Japan, and nuclear DNA analysis in 2018 showed that genetically, Ryukyuans are the most closely related, followed by mainland Japanese, from the Ainu (Ref) perspective.

Furthermore, in 2021, a paper on archaeogenetics published in the journal Nature stated that DNA analysis of prehistoric human bones excavated from the Nagabaka (lit. Long graveyard) site in Miyakojima City showed that they were "100% pure Jomon", a research finding that indicates that prehistoric archipelago people came from the Okinawa Islands.

キジムナー 〜 いたずら好きな赤毛の妖怪たち

キジムナーは、日本の沖縄諸島に伝わる伝説の小さな木の精霊で、樹木 (一般的にはガジュマルの老木) の中に住んでいる。見た目は3、4歳くらいで、赤い髪をしていると言われている。

キジムナーの別名は「ブンガヤ」であり、「頭の大きい」という意��である。キジムナーは非常にいたずら好きで、いたずらをして人間をだますことで知られている。最もよく知られているのは、人の胸の上に横たわり、身動きや呼吸をできなくさせる「金縛り」だ。そんなキジムナーだが、人間と仲良くなることもある。

魚捕りが巧みであり、しかも捕った魚の左目または両目だけしか食べない。その為、キジムナーと仲良くなれば魚をいつでも貰え、漁運に恵まれる。海に潜って漁をするのが得意であっという間に多くの魚を獲る。でも、彼らが獲った魚は全部目が無い。また、水面を駆け回ることができ、人を連れながらでも水上に立てる。

熱い鍋蓋、タコ、ニワトリ、人間のおならを極端に嫌い、それらのものをキジムナーに近付けるのは禁忌である。また住んでいる木に釘を打たれると死ぬ (或いは別の木への転居を余儀なくされるとも)。これらの禁忌を破った人間に対しては、殺害を含む恐ろしい報復を為す事も辞さない。

然し、禁忌さえ破らなければ基本的に人間には無害な存在であり、人間とは「良き隣人」であると言う伝承が多い。

[琉球諸島 (奄美群島、沖縄諸島、宮古列島、八重山列島の総称) の歴史］

琉球諸島には、約3万2千年前から人類が住んでいたことがわかっている。

15世紀から19世紀までの約450年間、日本の南西諸島に存在した君主制国家、琉球王国は、中国をはじめ日本、朝鮮、東南アジア諸国との外交・貿易を通して発展し、琉球王朝の王城、首里城はその海洋王国の政治・経済・文化の中心にあった。しかし、19世紀後半、日本政府が軍隊を派遣し首里城から国王尚泰 (しょうたい) を追放し沖縄県の設置を宣言した(琉球処分)。これによって、琉球王国は滅亡した。

遺伝子研究では、琉球列島 (沖縄諸島、宮古列島、八重山列島) の集団は、遺伝的に中国本土や台湾の集団との直接的なつながりはなく、日本本土と同一の父系を持つという研究結果や、2018年の核DNA分析から遺伝的に、アイヌ（参照）から見て琉球人が最も近縁であり、次いで日本本土人が近縁であるという研究結果が発表されている。

さらに、2021年には、宮古島市の長墓遺跡から出土した先史時代の人骨をDNA分析した結果、「100％純粋な縄文人」であったとする考古遺伝学の論文が雑誌「ネイチャー」に掲載され、先史時代の列島人が沖縄諸島から来たことを示す研究結果が発表されている。
