Alternatives to Squishmallow

So as many of you have probably already heard, Jazwares, the company that produces Squishmallows, is donating to charities that support Israeli soldiers and the IDF. They’re also supporting Canary Mission, which has been doxxing people who speak out against Israel. BDS hasn’t called for a boycott against them, but I can’t in good faith spend my money on their products, and I would strongly encourage everyone who enjoys plushies to really think long and hard about if you want to give your money to a company that’s helping support genocide!

But the holidays are coming up, and lots of us enjoy plushies and were fans of Squishmallow, and were planning to give Squishmallows to friends and family this year.

Fortunately, there are a number of great plushie companies out there, and I want to promote some of my favorites in the hopes that folks will get their plushie fix from a source that doesn’t side with Israel. So without further ado:

Fluffnest

Fluffnest got their start on Kickstarter a few years ago, and I adore the round shapes of their PuffPal plushies! My favorite is Pete the Possum, which is probably the best possum plush I’ve ever seen. I’ve also got a beautiful moth from their Kickstarter and I’ve been wanting their bats for ages. They also recently had a Kickstarter for an Animal Crossing-esque video game featuring their plushie characters and it looks fantastic.

Squishables

I can’t get over the plague doctor plushies. They’re so perfect and cute, and they’ve released other variations of them called Alter Egos, like a ghostly version, an alien, or a really sweet cottagecore one! They’ve got a ton of variety, but what I like the most are the fantasy plushies. There’s a lich! There are dragons and demons! Cryptids! Biblically accurate angels! A lot of really fun stuff!

Also they do a lot of great charity work! Right now they’re doing an auction for the Food Bank of New York City.

AfternoonFika

AfternoonFika is a very small business of only three people, but their plushies are extremely cute. They tend to sell out fast, so I recommend following them on social media to stay on top of any restocks! They recently released a line of dinosaurs that are precious, and of course I love their iconic cactus cat and cinnamon bun bunny.

Jellycat

Jellycat has been around since 1999, so they’re the oldest of these companies. They’ve got great designs, a ton of variety, and a lot of their plushies are made to be cuddled on and not just displayed. All three of my tiny nephews sleep with a different stuffed dog from Jellycat. My mom has a sun and several succulents that she uses as decorations. There’s a little something for everyone who enjoys plushies!

If you have any other favorite companies I haven’t mentioned, feel free to add on! I’ve enjoyed Squishmallows for a while now and I’m sad to see their leadership coming out on the side that’s committing war crimes on a daily basis, but this is a good time to discover new favorite plushie companies! And remember, money speaks loudly. Even if BDS hasn’t called for a boycott of Jazwares, it sends a message when sales start dropping for companies that support genocide. It’s a small thing, but the little things we do can add up!

Britta Phillips - Jem - Truly Outrageous 1985

Jem and The Holograms, also known as simply Jem, is an American animated musical television series that ran from 1985 to 1988. The series is about record company owner Jerrica Benton, her singer alter-ego Jem, and the adventures of her band Jem and The Holograms. The series was a joint collaboration by Hasbro, Sunbow Productions and Marvel Productions, the same team responsible for G.I. Joe and Transformers. The creator of the series, Christy Marx, had also been a staff writer for the aforementioned programs. The animation for most of the episodes was provided by Japanese animation studio Toei Animation. Eleven episodes and the stunningly gorgeous opening sequence were provided by the South Korean studio AKOM.

The series' format included three songs for the featured music videos in each episode. The music videos paralleled the style of rock videos found on MTV at the time featuring fast editing, a quick pace, and special effects. The inclusion of music videos in Jem was a result of the success and popularity of MTV (Music Television) at the time, which began airing four years prior. The show contains a total of 187 music videos with 151 unique songs. Over 200 original songs were written for the series. Several songs are featured on cassette tapes of Hasbro's Jem toy line.

The Jem Theme was composed by Anne Bryant and sung by Britta Phillips. The song is an alternate version of "Truly Outrageous", arranged to fit the TV series intro's imagery and also allows for a verse sung by the show's antagonists The Misfits to be added.

many people which are now known as famous and popular celebrities have created their alter egos long ago. jennifer lopez' alter ego called lola, eminem's alter ego slim shady or mariah carey's alter ego mimi — they all serve one purpose: to extend one's self-image. in other words, becoming someone, which is exactly what we do when we manifest!

an alter ego — latin for "other i" — can be referred to as a secondary self, a hidden or even opposite side of one's self. it’s an alternative personality which is believed to be different from a person's actual or original personality. some even say it’s a better or enhanced version of oneself, possessing all characteristics which your first self desires or aspires to have. your alter ego is defined by everything you wish and intend it to be defined by. in manifestation terms, an alter ago is simply a different concept of self or state of mind which you can embody or identify with at all times.

creating an alter ego for yourself can be quite beneficial if you find it exhausting to embody your desired version of self all the time or experience difficulties representing or relating to a fixed state of self continuously or repeatedly. inventing and alter ego helps to be able to identify with a made up side of yourself without feeling the pressure or the need to show up as them every minute of the day, especially if they are inherently or drastically divergent than how you are normally.

on the other hand, it serves as a means to express yourself in a way that’s in contrast to how you usually are, reducing anxiety and inducing confidence instead. it guides you into thinking and expecting more of yourself naturally and get over your mental limitations and restrictions. your alter ego is an extension from who you are to who you could be. what you can’t do, your alter ego can!

whenever you intend to become your alter ego and let them "take over yourself", your job is to get into the mindset of that specific alter ego. you need to let them live through you. let them be who they are while using your body as a "vessel". think about it, what would they do? how would they act? if you were to make a decision, how would they choose? what would they say? make it your aim to BE them.

Jerk Ford AU: The Worst Ford You Know

Something that irks him about his alternate versions? They don't care about going home. They just want to destroy Bill Cipher.

"You didn't simp for that triangle hard enough when you were thirty?"

And alternate versions of his brother weren't spared either. If he met canon Stan, the first thing he's doing is calling him a doormat.

"You would go this far to save him? You should cut your losses, he wouldn't do the same for you. You would choose him over the world, meanwhile he'd sacrifice you on the alter to his ego over and over again."

And in this hypothetical scenario, if he later hears about canon Ford returning and telling Stan he's gonna kick him out at the end of the summer? Jerk Ford would go out of his way to find a way to send canon Stan an "I told you so" letter, because he's going to be an *sshole about it.

using alter-egos is something that helped me a lot in almost all aspects of my life and rly pushed me to become the best version of myself.

alter ego by definition is someones secondary or alternative personality. successful ppl like kobe bryant, beyonce and more use alter egos in their field of work.

alter egos r a direct way to put urself into the state of ur dream self or the best version of urself and can help u to grow and get out of ur comfort zone.

HOW TO USE AN ALTER EGO :

write down a list of traits that defined the OLD you (or the you in the ordinary world) and then write down a list of trait that the best version of you or the traits that u wish u had

bring LIFE to ur alter ego. think about who are what inspires you, it can be real or fictional, living or inanimate DONT limit urself to anything

trust the process and put thought into it ~

3. once you've thought of all this for ur alter ego, all u have to do is breathe life into ur alter ego or egos. give it a name, ik megan thee stallion has an alter ego called tina snow.

dont just choose a random name, although u can name ur alter ego anything its important to choose a name that u feel some sort of emotional connection to. and a name that invokes or implies who you are or who you wanna be.

4. to activate ur alter ego use a totem or an artifact. (EX: when u wear a certain accessory or piece of clothing ur activating a certain alter ego) its called enclothed cognition which states the effect that clothes have on human cognition

I haven't seen a lot of Kate fics as the Ronin, so I was kinda in the mood to acc write one. Hope you enjoy it!

You don't know how long she's been at it for. You're out of breath, shaking, palms flat against the wall with your clothes discarded on the floor. Your forehead, glistening with sweat. Head fallen down, unable to keep it up. Kate's hands are on your hips, forcing you back to every roll of her hips, making you feel the roughness of her thrusts. It wasn't like this. You don't remember the last time she's been soft towards you. The last time she's kissed you. The last time you've both cuddled. It's all so foreign now. As though she's a new person.

While Kate had been busy with Kingpin, Clint was fighting off Yelena Belova, the assassin hired by her own mother to kill her partner. Later, when Kate managed to defeat Kingpin, she exited the store to see none other than Clint's body, with Yelena nowhere to be seen. It was a complete shock to her. And when the cops and medics came, the officers arrested her mother, and took Clint's body. It changed Kate. What once was the girl you fell in love with, became consumed with rage, and numbness. That was the point where she embraced Clint's alter-ego as her new identity: the Ronin. The merciless vigilante. Kate refused to use Clint's recurve bow. She couldn't bring herself to. And so, taking that dark path led her to a new road of bloodshed, and violence. One she used as a getaway, to escape her anger, suffering, and emptiness.

Lucky whines from the corner of the room, sat down, his tail swishing agitatedly as he watches from the side, as though sensing your distress. At one point, Kate's hips slam hardly against you, pain coursing through your body. It happens over, and over again, as though she's trying to let out her anger. And finally, you can't take it anymore. "Stop.." You whisper shakily, forehead against the wall, your body shivering in pain. Kate's icy eyes, once vibrant, now dull, glare down at the back of your head, before pulling out and discarding the toy on the floor, before walking into the kitchen without a word, leaving you to collect your bearings, and get changed. It's silent, with the only sounds being your harsh breaths.

After a few seconds, Kate finally reappears, with the Ronin suit, starting to put it on. She's barely home anymore. The Kate you once knew hated when you would even leave for school. But this...isn't the same Kate. "I'm going out. Murdock and Castle need me for the night. Parker's unavailable." Kate says, her voice devoid of any emotion- mirroring her expression- finally breaking the silence as she stands in front of you, the retractable katana in her pocket.

"Stay...please." You manage to find your voice once more, the words coming out as a shaky, breathy whisper. You hate it when she goes. You miss her...so much. The old her. She's suffered. So much. And you've tried to be there for her. But...it's all getting too much. You feel so...lonely these days. It's as though she doesn't love you anymore- that you're only still with her, as a source for her to take her anger out. Kate's ocean grey eyes narrow down at you, remaining where she is.

"I'm going." She murmurs, making a move to the door. Despite the current pain your body is feeling, you manage to reach her before she leaves, grabbing her arm. It's a lie. You can see it in her sombre eyes. She's going to go out, kill a few robbers she finds, and come back while you're asleep.

"Kate, please-"

"Goddamn it, Y/N!" Kate suddenly shouts, yanking your hand off her arm, an angry expression on her face. You're startled by her outburst. "Leave me the fuck alone. You can handle yourself. You don't need me to be by your goddamn side all the time." She snarls, her grip on your wrist tight, as though trying to break it.

"You're lying- they didn't call you- I know what you're going to do-"

"And?! Are you gonna stop me? What I'm doing is right. Bringing justice." Kate growls, her eyebrows furrowed in rage as she lets your wrist fall from her grasp, her cheeks starting to turn red due to the pent-up anger, frustration...sorrow, buried inside her.

"It isn't right, Kate! It's not what Clint would've wanted!" You shout back, in retaliation. You know she's hurting...so...much. But so are you. You've tried to be there for her. Whenever you could. Maybe you're not enough now. Maybe...Kate fell out of love for you. You long for things to be how they once were. And before you know it, you feel a calloused hand grip your throat tightly, her face moving up close to yours, threatening you.

"Say it again. Say it again, dammit! You don't get to talk about him! When all you've ever done, is sit there and wait for me to do shit! You're not like him- you never will be. You're nothing." Kate growls, her voice loud, and almost malicious, her hand squeezing the air out your lungs, before her grip suddenly slackens at the subconscious tear falling down your cheek. You can't do it anymore.. it hurts...so much, hearing Kate say that. Your hand moves to your neck, as you shakily gasp for air, before managing to rasp out, with a soft sob.

"I-I can't do this anymore.." You whisper shakily, the tears finally starting to flow freely down your cheeks. Kate's eyes momentarily widen, before her expression hardens, her mouth opening, before closing, unable to find the words she wants to say.

"I don't know you anymore...I-I think it's best if we.."

"Go then. Get out. Come back when you've realised you're wrong." Kate murmurs, her voice now a quiet whisper, matching yours, as her jaw clenches slightly, now...addressing what she had done. And before she knows it, you've headed out the door, in a mess of tears and sweat, as she slams the door shut behind you. Kate's anger slowly fades away, before her body slides back down against the door, her head leaning back against it. You're the girl she loves.. She's been...so dismissive, too caught up on her own distress and anger, that she's been unintentionally hurting you too. You're both hurting. Her eyes dart over to Lucky, who finally gets up and trots over to her with a whine, before sitting down and resting his head on her leg.

Kate's breathing slowly calms down, before her hand hesitantly starts petting Lucky's head. She swallows back the threatening flood of emotions surging through her, before she whispers quietly, looking down at Lucky. "I...hurt her, Lucky... I-...I hurt Y/N.."

I wasn't interested much in the Gwenpool Fortnite collab (fingerless gloves are a cute tweak), but someone asked on Twitter about "evil future Gwenpool" being labelled "Dark Gwenpool" ingame (which is what I've been calling my fan character variant since 2020):

"Dark" is a very common prefix for evil alter egos, so even if people occasionally mistake my comics for official material, I was certain this was a coincidence. But then the person also casually pointed out that she's called "Dark GwenPool" on Wikipedia. Huh?

No sources cited as far as I can tell. One of the original Gwenpool creators even agreed that "Dark Gwenpool" was never official:

I hunted down the Wikipedia changelog where apparently someone injected all the Dark Gwenpool stuff on 8th of April this year (2024). So maybe someone on the Fortnite team checked Google/Wikipedia instead of making up the name from scratch.

I tried to hunt down the wiki editor for questioning only to find out they are banned for being a sockpuppet account. In fact, that user was such a prolific sockpuppeteer that they've got their own Wikipedia page listing all 164 suspected alts. One of them is called "Batrocfrogg", what kind of canonization assist from beyond the grave is this?!

Since that lead went cold, I looked at the sources the wiki edit gave when talking about the character more generally. Aside from the official comics where she isn't called Dark Gwenpool, we've got:

"Peter Parker & Miles Morales: Spider-Men Double Trouble #2" – evil Gwen just has a cosplay background cameo there, no name drop.

Marvel Duel, a niche F2P mobile card game, where she's an antagonist.

The person who first pointed out to me that "Dark Gwenpool" was also on Wikipedia dug around and found a screenshot that evil Gwen is indeed called "Dark Gwenpool" in Marvel Duel:

Obviously I assume the Marvel Duel devs just made that one up without knowing about my comics. Case closed on that lead! But I'm not sure if the Wiki edit was based on this.

Marvel Duel, if we can still trust its wiki page, only released in eight countries. They are mostly in the UTC+8 time zone. The edit was finished on ~22:00 UTC+0, which would be Tuesday 05:00 AM local time if the editor is from one of those countries themselves. Of course, maybe the person played an emulated/jailbroken version (the game does come in English), watched a foreign Let's Play, or is just a super night owl. None of these are stranger than having 146 sockpuppet accounts. But it also doesn't exactly help the edit's credibility like I had hoped.

I also don't know if Marvel Duel included the name variations "Dark GwenPool" and "Dark Gwen" that the Wiki editor used specifically (in the screencap above she's stylized differently). The editor also called her the "evil alternator future version" tho, so maybe they aren't a stickler for details.

But yeah the TL;DR is that "Dark GwenPool" is currently the main name for evil Gwen on Wikipedia with no source cited. Marvel Duel calling her that as well was probably just coincidence. Maybe Fortnite also made it up, or they copied it from Wikipedia, or maybe they copied it from Marvel Duel itself.

I thought it was weird and funny enough to share. 164 sockpuppets. WTF.

an alternative characterisation of doctor/allen that's been sitting in my brain for a little which was meant to be more faithful to the canon. It takes inspiration from the out-of-makeup version of the cast Worthikids has given, and literally every one of them, Allen looks angry or nonchalant. So I began playing on the idea that out of makeup he's the complete opposite, and there's this switch in character. For the sake of cohesion, I'm going to refer to Doctor as when he's in the makeup/costume and Allen when he's out of it. Partially because I headcanon Allen using Doctor as a way of some sort of coping mechanism.

This Allen is dead panned or sneering (as the most expressive he will ever be), I do not think he keeps the accent in this one with a normal voice. Just like my other version of Allen/Doctor, I do think Doctor as a persona was created as an outlet for Allen. I'm considering the possibility that he is simply apathetic due to an upbringing where emotional expression wasn't a part of his life. Doing theatre really acted as a catharsis for him, where he was able to release all those pent-up emotions.

But I think it's still something he'd struggle with, maybe it's just society's cold attitude to anything against the grain, which makes Allen feel the need to be this muted person. Doctor as a separate alter ego over-compensates for all of that, and I think that really shines with his portrayal in the show. He pulls this ridiculous accent, he commits himself to bits, strange classic metaphors. I think that one scene where Doctor's differentiation in voice of Doctor vs Allen especially lends itself to this characterisation. When he's Doctor, Allen doesn't exist anymore, so in truth, that is technically his *real voice*. How this differs from my previous characterisation of Allen (The one portrayed in Silence. And im gonna be honest, they're actually not that different in terms of psychology but i digress), is that he overcompensates through everything. He's this pretentious individual who can't stand being normal because he's insecure about being insignificant, so Doctor was meant to be an outlet for his ideal self. That line begins to blur as to whether that was just a persona or his most unapologetic self this entire time. New characterisation of Allen is like that because of the exact opposite reason: he's a conformist. And I would lowkey love to get my hands on some writing where there is that clash in identity rgrrhhrraaahrhr

SO NOW WE'RE AT THE PART EVERYONES HERE FOR, HOW DOES THIS CHANGE THE CESDOC DYNAMIC? I think to compensate for Allen's apathy and nonchalance, I'd interpret Cesare as more faithful to the show as well. In a lot of my writings and interpretations, Cesare still remains a very mysterious, omnipotent figure who lurks (he's more toned down, essentially). So I think Cesare & Doctor would otherwise be faithful to the show, it's chaos meets chaos, they go find awful food together and make abominations. Cesare and Doctor however, I think Cesare would act as a role model because he's so unapologetic, where Allen still scrutinises himself over every emotional indulgence he has. But then it'd make for an equally awkward situation where Cesare also distances himself from emotional connections. There's this massive potential for miscommunication and misunderstanding because none of them will take the initiative. Overall though, Allen and Cesare would still be a nice match since they match eachothers weirdness, Allen is the only one who can tolerate Cesare for long periods of time. And Cesare, he's been emotionally distant for like a millennia, I think he'd recognise that in Allen and would be empathetic since they essentially have the same mindset. Ok end of rant, now for final words. Am I going to draw this new dynamic more often? Eh probably not, but I think it's still a fun character study. Would not be opposed to doing some writing but I feel as though writing as a medium of art is not as well enjoyed in comparison to, you know, physical art. So it depends if people want it. alright thanks 4 reading if u see this.

Zur En Arrh taking over Bruce, Batman (2016) #126

zur en arrh, in the simplest way of explaining, is this alter ego/personality (it's unclear) bruce created for himself should batman (bruce wayne) ever be psychologically compromised or brainwashed. it's not him, but a more sadistic and crueler person that is the "ultimate batman" who doesn't care about anyone or anything but getting the mission done.

during Batman #125-130, zur takes over the role of batman because bruce was losing very badly to the robot Failsafe (which is zur's own creation, that bruce has no memory of making). after getting vaporised by failsafe and sent travelling through dozens of alternate universes, losing his hand and fighting a flying shark (Batman #131-135), bruce returns to gotham incredibly mentally unstable.

During a peaceful dinner with his family, Bruce suddenly imagines the entire world on fire, Batman (2016) #136.

during everything, bruce managed to mentally fight back and kind of... merge their ideals together in order to survive and win in the moment.

and then successfully trapping failsafe back into his mind where he can no longer take over!

Bruce uses some sort of mental technique to lock Zur away in his mind, Batman (2016) #136.

except he didn't succeed! at all!

you see, when travelling through all those universes, bruce somehow brought back every single version of zur en arrh with him. now all of then combined, plus his already deteriorating and weak mental health from the last few years, bruce is currently operating under the impression that he's locked zur away, when he actually hasn't.

zur is the one partly, or even entirely, in control. right now, he's just pretending to stay locked away so bruce continues to do what he thinks is 'right' despite them being incredibly out of character for the run.

During his eight week coma, Bruce sees Zur 'locked away' and he is, apparently, not alone, Gotham War: Battle Lines (2023)

an example is when zur referred to robin as batman's solider, bruce mentally fought back to make it clear that tim was his son. but then, a few issues later, bruce refers to his children as his soldiers and that they've all betrayed him, implying that zur has always had control and isn't locked away.

so yeah, zur is not bruce! they're both batman, but zur en arrh is like his somehow unimaginably even worse twin. if you're interested more in him, i would suggest giving his character history a read! be warned it gets changed A LOT and is definitely not everyone's cup of tea (personally i hate him and need him shelved for another forty years).

now that that's all done and explained, the current state of gotham war is Bruce (thinks he's okay) fighting everyone else (except Damian) because in his (Zur's) point of view, they're all against the mission and therefore are now his enemies (he's lost his mind). totally not convoluted.

to answer your original question, yes, this is all bruce saying and doing these things but he is being HEAVILY influenced by Zur. we can't tell for certain how much of this is bruce and how much is zur, but we can definitely prove zur is partially or completely controlling him again.

even jason points it out after bruce implants that fear toxin chip into him in Batman (2016) #138:

like we can see the intention is to keep jason out of this, because compared to everyone else, jason was the most directly opposed to bruce. but zur is twisting how this concern gets expressed, since forcing jason into feeling fear everytime he gets an adrenaline rush is hardly the reformation bruce is usually encouraging. the other batfam members also talk about how uncharacteristically violent bruce is being.

as the story progresses we see more and more of zur replace bruce, but because he can't have bruce trying to stop him again, zur is playing along and convincing bruce he's locked away. so really, bruce is at war with not only his entire family, but also his own mind. just another average tuesday for batman. he's being tricked and is unknowingly doing exactly what he was trying to prevent.

to understand what the actual war in gotham war is, give the comics listed above a read! if you find the story boring/ridiculous/stupid, don't worry, it is! the social commentary leaves a lot to be desired, as does most of the characters writings (especially selina's).

bruce and his one sided battle with zur is sort of an overarching story happening alongside it (along with a bunch of other ongoings. i don't even understand how detective comics and batman and robin are going to tie into this once it starts up again).

sorry the answer isn't a simple one, but unfortunately nothing is ever simple with bruce. also apologies in advance if any of the future gotham war comics come out and completely debunk all of this! who knows what will happen in this dramatic family drama.

Thunderbolt Fantasy Final Movie Ending Easter Eggs Explained

Warning: Spoilers for the movie ahead.

If you finished watching the ending of the Thunderbolt Fantasy final movie and found yourself feeling like you were missing out on some inside jokes or references here and there, it’s probably because you were. Namely, there are a number of Easter eggs and tributes to the Pili main series featured in the movie, as well as some callbacks to TBF Season 4 that are not obvious to most viewers because of certain things that were not translated in the official subs.

Note: I’m using the pinyin spellings of the names mentioned throughout. Here’s the guide to the Japanese equivalents for anyone who is more familiar with those:

Bai Lian’s Alter Ego

Before I dig into some of the more movie-specific plot-relevant details, it’s important to first establish that Bai Lian’s character in and of itself functions as an Easter egg. He was designed as an alternate universe version of Pili’s most iconic character, Su Huan Zhen (sometimes spelled Su Huan Jen). Su Huan Zhen’s art name is Qing Xiang Bai Lian, or the Fragrant White Lotus, and that is where Bai Lian’s name, meaning “White Lotus,” comes from. (You can read more about Bai Lian’s character design as it relates to Su Huan Zhen in this interview if you’re interested.) The Japanese voice actor who plays Bai Lian, Takehito Koyasu, also voiced the role of Su Huan Zhen in the Japanese dub of the old Pili movie Legend of the Sacred Stone.

(I was not active in the fandom when Season 3 first aired, and I don’t know how widely circulated the above information was among Anglophone fans at the time, so apologies if this is not new information to you. I am including it here just in case for anyone who doesn’t already know.)

Anyway, with this character setting in mind, I wish the official Crunchyroll subs had opted to translate the name of the final sword that Bai Lian left in the shrine instead of leaving it in romanized form as the Furong Hui Dao. (Also, quite perplexingly, the Furong Hui Dao is incorrectly referred to as the Tian Xing Jian in Crunchyroll’s subs throughout the whole final movie, I dunno what the hell was up with that.) Furong Hui Dao means “Lotus Wisdom Saber,” and it reinforces the lotus imagery associated with Bai Lian’s character that appears in his name, on his clothing, and in the crest carved into the shrine.

Bai Lian As Su Huan Zhen: The Montage

When Bai Lian emerges from the lotus that descends from the seam where the skies got broooken, there are multiple Easter eggs and tributes wrapped into this montage. The first is the background music that plays. Rather than being from the Thunderbolt Fantasy original soundtrack written by Hiroyuki Sawano and Co., it is a song, titled Qing Xiang Bai Lian, that was the character theme for Su Huan Zhen from a past OST for Pili’s main series, written by one of Pili's in-house composers, Feng Tsai-lun. (You can listen to the full version on YouTube here.)

Next, a character poem is read for Bai Lian. This is actually Su Huan Zhen’s character poem and is a touchstone for longtime Pili fans (or anyone who has watched enough of Pili’s series/seasons that feature Su Huan Zhen to become familiar with his poem), to the point that a lot of Taiwanese fans can recite it from memory. Rather than being voiced by Huang Huei-feng, who did all of the other character poem recitations in Thunderbolt Fantasy, it is read by his father, the late Huang Wen-tse, or Vincent Huang. Vincent Huang (brother to Pili’s President Chris Huang and uncle to Pili’s CEO Huang Liang-hsun) is referred to as the “Eight-Tone Genius” for his versatility and skill as the narrator and voice actor who, up until a few years ago, played all of the roles in the Pili main series spanning hundreds of characters and decades of the show. The “Eight-Tone” part of this moniker is a reference to the fact that Taiwanese Hokkien, the language that Pili’s main series uses, has eight tones (at least nominally, not going to delve into the nitty-gritty linguistic technicalities here). Sadly, Vincent Huang passed away in summer 2022, before the scripts for Season 4 and the final movie of Thunderbolt Fantasy had even been finished. They must have used an old recording of Su Huan Zhen’s poem for the recitation that appears in this movie.

Bai Lian’s Deus Ex Machina: The Foreshadowing and the Callbacks

While Bai Lian’s descent from the sky to save the day may be a Deus Ex Machina situation, it’s worth noting that this plot point was actually foreshadowed in Season 4 Episode 10. The shrine in the Wasteland of Spirits where the Lotus Wisdom Saber was stored had a stone tablet inscribed with a poem/message written by Bai Lian and addressed to Shang Bu Huan:

超越時空與君交

祠中遺物證友誼

正道之人若相禱

此刀為誓必有應

Translation:

Transcending time and space to meet with you,

The relic within the shrine serves as a testament to friendship.

If a person who walks the path of righteousness offers their prayers,

I vow by this blade, they shall be answered.

The first time I read the shrine inscription back in Season 4, I thought the first line was referring to how Shang and Bai Lian first met and how the sword was left to Shang in a different place and time from when Bai Lian first created it, and the message as a whole was about the sword being Bai Lian's gift to Shang, the “answer” to his “prayers” to help him with his battle against evil, but it turns out it was [also] foreshadowing that Bai Lian himself would cross space-time to meet Shang when he used the sword.

Just as this inscription in Season 4 foreshadows the events of the movie, there are lines in the movie that call back to this inscription in Season 4 using the same words that are in the message (well, the Japanese version/pronunciation, anyway, since the poem is in Chinese, which is used as the in-universe written language of TBF).

The first of these callbacks I noticed is when Tian Ming brings the sword to Shang and gives her little speech about power and swords, which ends with the declaration: “You need to demonstrate that to him, Bu Huan!”

The original line in Japanese: その証を今ここであの方に伝えて，不患!

Romanization: Sono akashi wo ima koko de ano kata ni tsutaete, Fukan!

Here, the word “証” (also written as “証し,” pronounced “akashi”) is the Japanese kanji that was derived from simplifying the Chinese character “證,” which appears in the second line of the shrine inscription, translated as “testament” within the context of the poem. (One could also translate that part as “a demonstration of friendship,” but I thought “testament” had more of the gravitas befitting the context.)

After hearing Tian Ming’s words, Bu Huan then repeats that same word, “証,” and seems to come to a realization, though it’s not 100% clear to me if he’s simply internalizing what Tian Ming said or if he’s also making a connection to the message from the shrine and what the message implies about the sword’s symbolism. It seems like he doesn’t fully solve that puzzle until he sees the seam in the sky made by the sword.

The far more blatant and unquestionable callback to the shrine inscription happens in Bai Lian’s lines as he takes the stage and after he uses the sword on Huo Shi Ming Huang.

The original Japanese:

過ちと悔みをするまい。

これは時を超え空を越え友誼の形。

ゆえに、私は今一度

禁断の門を跨ぎ越えましょう。

ここに誓いは果たされた。

またいつか、お目にかかりましょう、我が友。

Romanization:

Ayamachi to kuyami wo suru mai.

Kore wa toki wo koe, sora wo koe, yuugi no katachi.

Yue ni, watashi wa ima ichido

Kindan no mon wo matagikoemashou.

Koko ni chikai wa hatasareta.

Mata itsuka, o-me ni kakarimashou, waga tomo.

Translation:

There is no need for blame or regret.

This is what friendship that transcends time and space looks like.

Thus, once again,

I have crossed the forbidden gate.

Here, the vow has been fulfilled.

Let us meet again someday, my friend.

If you cross-compare the kanji in the Japanese lines with the original Chinese text of the shrine inscription, you’ll see the overlap in the words, which I have bolded and underlined in both the original Japanese lines and their corresponding translations. The Crunchyroll subs are not “wrong,” by the way; the alternate translation Tifa provided for these lines is simply meant to highlight the parallels in juxtaposition with my translation of the shrine inscription. Hopefully it should be clear now that Bai Lian is explicitly referring back to the message he wrote to Shang when he left him the sword.

Unfortunately, since the shrine inscription was not translated in the official subs for Season 4, this reference to it in the movie got lost as well. I wouldn't go as far as to say that this oversight completely compromised the intelligibility of the ending, but I think having this context probably would have helped people appreciate the groundwork that was laid for this moment, regardless of whether or not they agree with the Deus Ex Machina plot device being used.

While I have a lot of issues with Crunchyroll’s handling of the subs for TBF, this is actually not just a Crunchyroll-exclusive omission. The shrine inscription is not translated for Japanese audiences either, so I would guess even Japanese viewers may not have caught on to these callbacks. And even for viewers who know Chinese, the panning shot of the stone tablet with the inscription is pretty short and the words are hard to make out, so unless you paused the video to squint at the inscription, you wouldn't even necessarily be able to figure out what it says just at a glance/in passing.

Anyway, I'm not sure whether the shrine inscription was commissioned by Urobuchi to begin with for Pili to implement or suggested by Pili and then okayed by Urobuchi (the latter happens frequently and Urobuchi has always been receptive to this kind of feedback from Pili). I also don’t know whether the production staff themselves actually considered this stuff super important. If it were, I would assume they would have either had Shang read [the Japanese equivalent of] the shrine inscription out loud, as Yan Xi does with the first three lines of the public notice about that Xi You minister at the end of the final movie, or feature Bai Lian reading it in a voiceover, similar to when Chao Feng received that message from Lin Xue Ya in the Demon Realm in S4. But either way, I thought it was at least worth bringing up as a fun fact to highlight the intentionality of the production.

The Central Plains Cameos

When Bai Lian transports Huo Shi Ming Huang to the other world, it’s revealed to be Zhongyuan (中原, pronounced “Chuugen” in Japanese), a.k.a the Central Plains, which is the principal setting for the Pili main series and Su Huan Zhen’s homeland. The two characters who give Huo Shi Ming Huang the mantou (the white steamed bun that got dubiously translated as “dumpling” in Crunchyroll’s subs), Qin Jia Xian (the guy in red) and Yin Shi Ren (the guy in blue), are also cameos of characters from Pili’s main series, with new clothing designs specially created for the movie.

Qin Jia Xian and Yin Shi Ren are recurring comic relief sidekick characters who are friends and allies to Su Huan Zhen. Qin Jia Xian’s name in Taiwanese Hokkien, Tsîn Ké-sian (秦假仙), is a pun on the Taiwanese phrase “tsin ké-sian” (真假仙). “Tsin” means “really” or “very,” while “ké-sian” refers to pretending or playing the fool. Qin Jia Xian is the quintessential representation of one of the five character archetypes of budaixi, 丑 (pinyin: chǒu), the comedic “clown” character, and is presented as the example of this archetype in the Pili budaixi exhibit on display at the Taoyuan Airport.

Yin Shi Ren is Qin Jia Xian’s lackey, as well as his comedic foil. He's the more straightforward and naive of the two, so he often gets roasted and bullied by Qin Jia Xian.

By the way, Qin Jia Xian is voiced by Yuichi Nakamura and Yin Shi Ren is voiced by Mafia Kajita. For those who don't know, Yuichi Nakamura is a popular Japanese voice actor (Satoru Gojo from Jujutsu Kaisen is one of his more well-known recent roles), and Mafia Kajita is a writer, radio personality, emcee, etc. who is good friends with Nakamura. Both Nakamura and Kajita are also buddies with Tomokazu Sugita, who played Prince Yan Xi, so their appearance in the cast list here is also a cameo of sorts. I suspect one of the reasons Kajita was enlisted for this particular cameo is because of his coincidental resemblance to the character of Yin Shi Ren.

The Last Cameo

This one has nothing to do with the Pili main series, but the boatman in the final scene with Shang is voiced by Gen Urobuchi himself! Honestly the most surprising of the cameos for me personally (in a fun way). During a Q&A session following an early screening of the film, Urobuchi said that after writing 50-something episodes of scripts, he wanted to have his name appear in the credits in a different capacity than in the past, and he got his wish.

It's time to stop playing "good girl" online and become the good girl in real life. The "gentleman" in daytime was just a facade. (Part 2 of the former posted caption. Special note below.)

These captions are for those who "stealth" , or hide, their transition during its early stages. It's also for those who may genderfluid or question their gender at times, only to discover later on that they may be a trans girl. Transitioning in public is difficult for many trans people due to transphobic laws, a risk of getting fired from a potential career, harassment from transphobes, etc. To avoid this, many prefer to "stealth" or "boymode" during the daytime, which is when most public activity takes place. Sometimes, they may even stealth during nighttime. But the latter is when it allows them to become themselves without too much consequence.

For some girls, they may even call them their "alter ego". In many cases, this is a safer alternative as it allows to experiment and express their wildest desires without needing to be out in public. Meanwhile, it also prepares them to interact as a girl when the inevitable time comes for them to come out in public. By this point, many will realize this "alter ego" was a novelty and that their true selves is a more neutral version as a girl.

These two captions aren't meant to oversexualize trans girls, but rather acknowledge a phase they may experience during their transition. Whether it's because of a spike in progesterone or because of a need to fill a void that couldn't be done prior to their transition, this is something many of us may experience with euphoria at first. Once we learn to appreciate and love our feminine gender, it's when it becomes easier to leave that phase behind and move on to the most significant change of our lives: coming out as a girl in public.
