I'm ready to give. A hot take about asexual Neil.

Because as an ace-spec person who enjoys sex as an activity for my partner(s) involved, people trying to erase poly/multi-shipping Neil by saying "He's demi so he wouldn't fuck them" have me really on edge. Sex isn't always about deriving personal pleasure. Sex can be an act of intimacy between partners where one gets more out of it physically than the other. You are aware good, consensual sex can happen between partners where one(OR EVEN BOTH/ALL!) of them don't orgasm?

Outside of just a kink scenario with a scene that is meant to instill frustration/not end in orgasm, you can just make out for fun. You can give handjobs and touch and finger and stroke and fondle and pinch and bite and suck and lick and fuck and enjoy just one partner getting their fill. You can top or bottom and not orgasm and still enjoy the experience for what it brings the relationship. (Not to mention Stone Tops are a real thing.)

Sex comes in many forms. Sex doesn't have to end in an orgasm for all involved. And Sex isn't always a defining characteristic for a relationship.

All I'm saying is is stop your ace erasure because you have a preference to only ship Neil a certain way. Your preference is valid until you use a label and twist its meaning to get what you and only you want.

i just peaked into an alternative TL where Laios was the one that got eaten by the dragon, so Falin & co had to go save him.

The way it played out (and I was thinking about this before falling asleep bcs it came up in a conversation with a RP buddy) Falin wants to go immediately, Marcille and Toshiro can't stop her, ChilChuck tags along, Namari is instructed by Toshiro to go look for his retainers so they catch up to them since he feels like the party is at a disadvantage with only him as a physical fighter.

The funny thing is that the fandom went from a ship war between Farcille and Shulin to a unspoken agreement that those three were in a V poly relationship, since over the course of the story the combined wet paper bag energy of Marcille + Toshiro (plus the face that Toshiro is canonically a bit intimidated by Marcille. Marcille. Marcille) made everyone realise, oh, they're a funny duo, let's put them in situations. Romance is a situation.

Okay, if you were asked who are in Merlin BBC that you can see based on canon that are gay/bi/pan/demi, which characters are they? Why?

I’m just gonna note that I’m not attached to any sexuality headcanon because people are going to have different opinions and it seems daft to lose more than half the fan content (art, fics, etc) just because of a headcanon. I’ll read more or less anything, I play around with queer themes in my writing fairly regularly and multiship everyone in the show, sometimes with characters from other fandoms too, but these are the sexualities I’ve written most of for each character otherwise this would be way too long.

And I know I’m assigning modern understandings of sexuality to medieval characters, but it’s a show with dragons and magic, also capes, a French castle, and whatever the hell that chainmail was so I think I can be excused for my historical inaccuracy.

Merlin: either gay or bi with a a preference for men. I could never get myself to really like Freya in the show, she wasn’t bad and I didn’t hate her, I usually just forget about her because it was one episode so I didn’t have enough time to get attached. She deserved more screen time and I love what the fandom has done with her character, but I usually see her where Merlin’s shipped with someone else so I honestly forget their romance exists most of the time. Other than that, I usually see him shipped with knights or Arthur or if he’s shipped with another woman, it’s someone who didn’t get enough screen time to get attached, or a mergwenthur (is that their ship name?) poly relationship.

Arthur: bi and demi. He needs time to like someone, canonically only started wearing a shirt after he got married but he walked around his chambers naked when it was just Merlin/no sexual implications in a servant of two masters. I’ve done deep dive character analysis into that and what it says for their trust of one another if anyone’s interested. It goes into them being platonic but acting like a couple and why meant so much for me to see as a kid and also why I think that proves their relationship is more than words can fully encapsulate. Also he’s had crushes on men and women so bi just fits.

Gwen: bi with a preference for men, she and Morgana had chemistry and I ship them pre season 3 but after that, not so much. Also had crushes on Lancelot, Merlin and married Arthur. They’re an adorable couple, honestly I love them. I don’t really have much else to say.

Morgana: aroace lesbian. Just my favourite headcanon, I like that she never had a canon relationship but she definitely had chemistry with Gwen. They’re just sweet together. I don’t know, mostly just vibes and my desire for more aroace rep.

Lancelot: bi with a preference for women. Gwen and Merlin. Yeah, that’s pretty much all I have to say. I just love that he’s such a great guy, I don’t think there’s anything more to it than two crushes in canon and vibes. I’ve written him as unlabelled or queer a fair amount, it really just depends.

Leon: Romance and sex averse aroace. Again, I just want representation and think he’s cool. I’ve seen him shipped with others, but I tend to default to aroace Leon in my own works more than anything else. Occasionally I’ll give him a qpr but it just depends on what I’m writing.

Gwaine: aromatic pansexual, he likes flirting but I think the idea of a permanent long term relationship would be “the one to tie him down” and it never entirely fits right. I’ve seen him shipped with Percival, I love that but usually if I’m writing it, I’ll have them in a qpr. I think he definitely feels low levels of romantic attraction but not enough to want a romantic relationship with someone, he loves so much, just not in the traditional ways and writing aroallo Gwaine is always super fun.

Elyan: I headcanon Elyan as trans masc but I don’t think I’ve got any specific headcanons for his sexuality. I’ve probably written him straight slightly more than anything else, but it’s a close tie between writing him straight and bi. It never usually comes up, so maybe just unlabelled or queer. I don’t know, he’s just Elyan. That’s all really.

Percival: I know in canon he had a wife and kids, I write him as being gay more than anything else, but my main headcanon tends to be that he’s bi or pan. Purely based on vibes but if it’s not relevant to the plot, I won’t bother mentioning it.

Arthur Pendragon is, in my head, demiromantic and bisexual... It sort of depends on the circumstances/episode. Arthur needs a very long time to really feel connections with people and only starts to consider love after he really gets to know them, hence his constant search for true love in the show. With Merlin I'm not entirely sure if he was attracted to him instantly, strangely enough feeling a connection from the moment they met, or if it takes him till the end of the series when Merlin confesses his magic and finally shows his true self to realise the depth of his feelings.

Merlin is, well... Bi Bi Bi. A disaster bi in fact. With a preference for sweaty men in metal boxes, he's not very peculiar. However, Merlin is a one person hyperfixation kind of guy. Most people are convinced that Merlin's gay.

Gwen: I feel like most people in BBC Merlin are bi and Gwen is no exception. Like Merlin, she prefers the hero type in metal uniforms. But she also had a thing for Morgana in the beginning.

Morgana: lesbian. I have never seen a woman so disinterested in men, I'm not surprised that they casted Katie McGrath in supergirl as supergirls love interest. I might settle for homoromantic and asexual. But definitly in love with Gwen in the very beginning.

Sir Leon, my beloved, the immortal, the one and only, the eternal suffering aro/ace. I don't have to explain this one. The only counter moment is the Lamia episode where Leon suddenly develops interest in women out of nowhere. My personal take is that anyone could be fallen under a Lamia's spell, this one just had a taste for men (and male presenting).

Sir Elian: once upon a time I clocked them as nonbinary and sadly that's as far as I thought into this character. Pretty sure he's aromantic. He/they pronouns. I dunno, I don't think Elian would conform to anything if given a choice. Aromantic too, I think. Like Leon, there is no interest there, but he does play around with Percival and Gwaine quite often, so I'd take that as allosexual.

I am excluding Gwaine because I think canon Gwaine is written as a straight oblivious fuckboy. Albeit a kind one XD fanon Gwaine is often poly/ pan... Or into apples. Lmao XD and I'm not sure about Percival because the man has a dead wife and kids.

That's his gender and his orientation and that's all I really need to know.

Howdy friend! I feel like that meme with doctor eggman that just walked in on rouge and shadow having a spirited discussion on something I have no pretext about. But it sounds important and I do wanna educate myself if there's a lacking somewhere, genuinely. From what I understood from scrolling down to a screenshot poll and other screens, it's trying to figure out if people are automatically taking frat boys (the classic stereotype kind, btw, genuinely players) in good faith by queer-ifying them because they have been fortunately unfortunate enough to not have the life experience of being used by this type of person that will take their good faith and hurt them?

Because I do think that there *could* be a cishet aro man out there, if it's defined very explicitly as: a man (born with a penis and identifies as he/him) and likes women (including trans women) and is aromantic. Face value wise, that is.

Because the question wasn't if the hypothetical man was superstraight (and don't count trans people at all) or just pussy-seeking (i.e. looking to have sex with ciswomen and trans men who haven't had bottom surgery, is explicitly Not transphobic). Or if this hypothetical man wasn't also, say, a "friend" met at a party/tinder/hookup/through mutuals/etc that is really just an acquaintance with little of substance genuinely known...or if this man was actually what one would consider a genuine friend. Or if this hypothetical man was poly (and/or if you were poly honestly, this feels like this is being framed in a mono mindset, which is okay! But poly adds extra details to account for). Also if he was out as aro.

The point is, I am aware of cheating. I am aware of using terms to get around cheating. Or trying to justify it. But aromantizim by itself isn't cheating. Poly by itself isn't cheating. FwB by itself, or hooking up by itself, or sex work by itself, isn't cheating- if there is informed consent on both sides with all affected parties, which includes all other partners. Wanting to sleep around isn't a crime, regardless of who or where or what gender.

I know there's plenty of men that aren't allies, that are homophobic or transphobic or sexist, but that wasn't the question. You aren't making that distinction or posing a scenario, just a screenshot without any added distinction other that the consent (after it was asked for by voters). It's taking the assumption that practicing genuine safe sex ( not that bullshit abstinence thing schools and "god fearing Christians" teach), is limited to only cishetero men... And not something to practice with everyone.

It shouldn't matter my gender or background or beliefs or sexuality, since these are simply opinions and all opinions come with grains of salt, but I know if I don't add context of me being the one giving these opinions, I'll be discredited.

It was Poly from the start and Open from the start. We are all okay and open to each other going out to bdsm clubs or kink parties or sleeping around, or if asking out cute people..... BUT we have to ask permission/inform the other partners in our polycule. There's nothing to hide and they consent. They can say no, and that's okay!! Because then!! We can have an open and honest discussion as to why (lonely, conflicting plans, insecurity, safety worries, etc). Also also, anyone new that's meant to become a fwb or a pet needs to know about and meet our polycule, and it's a one-no situation here. If *anyone* is uncomfortable, nothing goes forward.

Sex is nice, sex is great if you're a freak like me and into that sorta thing; and sexual safety awareness and stranger danger awareness and informed consent awareness is MAJORLY IMPORTANT AND CRITICAL AND EVERYONE SHOULD BE TAUGHT THIS IN SCHOOL OH GOD but in my humble opinion the execution has spiraled into something messy with rampant misunderstanding and accidental invalidation of aro-spec men, poly people, and our allies,,, as well as anyone trying to be open-minded even if they dont understand.

Mostly, I was trying to fill out the miraculous roster, cause AtLa only has a few “main” characters, I was trying to find some named characters the Gaang is shown being friends with who are roughly their age. I didn’t list Jet or his friends, cause, honestly, what exactly would their story be?? How do they integrate? Like, I’m sure you could do something, I just couldn’t really think of anything at the time. But also, I realized all the friends of the Gaang belong to Katara, Sokka, or Suki, later Zuko - Aang and Toph don’t really have any that are unconnected from them. In Toph’s case, she was raised super sheltered, and never got a chance to meet anyone, while Aang HAD friends, but they’re all mostly dead, except Bumi, because of the 100 years in ice thing. And we already have Bumi here being an old man. The only other friend Aang really mentions is Kuzon, the Fire Nation kid who … I think there’s a short story about the pair of them fighting off poachers? Anyway, I was basically imagining Kuzon as “Le Chien Kim, but Animal Lover and Environmentalist Advocate”. He would have grown up next door to Aang and Gyatso, and that’s how the pair are friends. As for names … I want to say Tarzan or Mowgli, but I feel like, even in universe, those would get him visits from lawyers.

Now, briefly into ships - this is just me spitballing my random headcanons, PLEASE TO ALL READING THIS, WE ARE HAVING FUN, LET’S NOT BRING THE ATLA SHIPWARS HERE! THIS IS JUST ME SPITBALLING! THEY CAN ALL BE CHANGED!

so, Katara/Aang. Aang I see as non-binary - they don’t mind which pronouns you use, but mostly uses he/they when referring to himself. Katara believes she is straight, but is actually bi with a bigger attraction to males.

Sokka is poly-pansexual. His relationships start with Sokka/Yue, until Yué realizes she’s actually AroAce, and they break up. Then later Sokka/Suki, which morphs into Zuko/Sokka & Sokka/Suki, which changes to Zuko/Sokka/Suki. Suki’s bi, while Zuko is … Zuko (demi-pan, but never has the words for it till WAY later).

Toph is Aro, or at least grayromantic, as is Teo. Teo I also see as trans, but that might just be me.

Mai/Ty Lee eventually becomes Mai/Ty Lee/Azula. (Sexuality uncertain, but my cousin does call them the “Deadly Lesbians”.) There’s a brief Mai/Zuko, but only to get Mai’s parents to back off and leave her alone.

Totally get the thing on Kuzon. Like yeah I’m trying to think of other characters to fill out the Hero team and other than Jet’s group there aren’t a lot. There’s a reason I dragged Jin into this(other than the fact that I love her)

And yeah I’ve been turning Jet and co over in my head trying to think of what they’d be and I can’t think of anything for them because there’s so many changes to the base setup.

AS FOR SHIPS

I have my ships I like and while I do take suggestions it’s my au and I get the nonsense!

Obvs the Aang/Katara stays.

I see the Zuko/Sokka/Suki and raise you adding Jin in there.

Swinging to Yue: I always have mixed feelings in some AUs because I love her and Sokka in Canon but most AUs they never really work out. And in this one idk why they wouldn’t exactly? Like nothing gets in the way. Maybe if I write Sokka starting the Suki relationship first and then while they’re poly they’re not at a ‘hey how do you think about another person?’ discussion stage when they meet Yue? And then by the time they are at that stage either they’ve moved on or Yue has her own partner?

That said. Yue/Azula. Any time I have the chance for them I take it. Like the equal opposite you see my vision.

I also have this weird soft spot for Toph/Ty Lee. Probably has something to do with that post of ‘Ty Lee teaches Toph to walk on her hands’ thing because as funny as that post is these two are menaces it’s great, the amount of trust involved in it!

My one original thought:

So like. The Gaang has a range of ages. And in atla that’s fine due to the circumstances. But here it’s kind of a question of ‘how do they all meet/become friends/etc if they never really meet’? so I’m gonna make shit up to squish them into the same grade in school. 

Aang and Toph skipped a grade. Homeschooling put them a bit ahead of their peers in public school so they just got placed ahead.

On the flipside, Zuko got held back a grade due to the whole ‘being kicked out and horrifically scarred’ thing. Like between the mental and physical care he’d need he missed a lot of class that year so just. Repeat the year.

The Amorous Spectrum

Writing this post at the behest of my partner who insisted after I told her a dream I had in which I was writing this post. It's all very meta.

So in this dream, the piece was essentially about how polyamorous and ambiamorous imply other types of relational orientations. It posited that romantic orientation largely deals with what genders/presentations you feel romantically attracted to - not the type of relationship structure you wished to have with that person. Which implies a type of relational orientation we've only really begun to talk about.

Polyamorous - desiring relationships with multiple people at the same time

Ambiamorous - happy in relationships with multiple people or with one person at a time; effectively relationally ambivalent

Monoamorous - desiring a relationship with one person at a time

"What about monogamous?" - I think there can be monoamorous non-monogamous people; people who want a relationship with one person but might also want to have sex with other folks. I spent a chunk of my 20's as a very happily consenting unicorn to folks who only really wanted to be in a proper relationship with each other.

I also think it implies people who are on some spectrum of not desiring a relationship as well, regardless of who they might experience other types of attraction to.

Nonamorous - not desiring of any relationship

Demiamorous - only experiences desire for a relationship after getting to know someone

Grey Amorous - sometimes experiences desire for a relationship, sometimes does not experience desire for a relationship

Demi and Grey Amorous people might lean toward poly, ambi, or monoamory when they do experience that desire.

I've personally experienced the fact that I can experience sexual and romantic attraction and still not generally for a relationship. I also think it's possible to not experience romantic or sexual attraction and still wish to have a relationship (perhaps desiring a queer platonic partner instead).

If you're like "this is making things too complicated" then, this post isn't probably for you. You've probably already got the language you need. And this isn't prescriptive, it's just a map to think about relational orientation as related to but not necessarily synonymous with romantic orientation. I hope it is at least food for thought regardless of where you fall.

*Disclaimer #1: I am not big on identiarianism. I'm not writing this is add more labels to identify with. I'm writing about this as a way to fill a language gap about specific desires that I've experienced. Less objective truth and more thought experiment.

Hmm a few years ago i wouldve said shu too based on the sex repulsion but his arc has been discovering and embracing his desires. Oremeru tho yeah im team aroace too, theres something appealing to me about a character known in universe for his sex appeal being ace. But i can also see him as repressing his own desires to become the embodiment of a perfect idol. I dont think he really knows what his own orientation actually is underneath all the masks he put on. Hmm im not sure about anyone else? I can see souma being demi? Aspec adonis? Then i know i joke about eichi being like if a very jealous monogamous person wishes he was poly, but if im being serious, i see him as aspec too, only interested sexually in wataru. I just remembered youre a minor, im gonna end this train of thought here. Im not sure if i view many characters as fully aroace, more on the spectrum... oh kohaku actually, i see him as aroace, leaning between sex and romance neutral to repulsed. Aro/ace hcs used to be something i was comfier with proudly talking abt years ago, but now i realise... well, im aspec myself, it's all *i* know, but im trying not to let that cloud my judgement. But i think a lot of characters end up being aspec too in my head just because thats the only experience i personally have and can project. But i dont want my understanding of characters to be just based on my own projection, yknow? I keep seeing people define bi, pan, omni, and poly as this

Bi - attraction to men and women

Pan - attraction to all genders with no preference

Omni - attraction to all genders with a preference

Poly - attraction to multiple but not all genders

Now, here's the thing. Pansexual and omnisexual in these definitions are completely sensible and understandable definitions. Poly and bi are, however not.

You know why?

Because the gender spectrum doesn't look like this

Moreover, gender expression ≠gender and sex ≠ gender, and nonbinary people don't have to be androgynous to be nonbinary, just like men can be feminine and women can be masculine

To make an example, I will use Demi Lovato

Now, Demi is nonbinary, uses she/they pronouns, and is, let's not kid ourselves, attractive

A lesbian could look at Demi and say, "Well, I'm a woman who likes women, and I find this nonbinary feminine person attractive." Does that make her no longer a lesbian? No, because she's attracted to someone that she sees as a woman, it does mean that homosexuality includes nonbinary people, and is nmlnm, not wlw, that's pretty commonly accepted. Now, if this could happen to masculine enbys (I'm not making an example again you get it) and a bisexual is attracted to both men and women, why would they not be attracted to nonbinary people? Because by all means, if you are into both masculinity and femininity, you should be a) also attracted to the mix of the 2, androgyny, as it is both of those mixed, or if you're not, at least be attracted to femininity and masculinity separately, because nonbinary people can be either.

The definition of bisexual given above is implying all nonbinary people are androgynous and everyone who doesn't not pass as androgynous is a man or a woman.

This is why nonbinary people are included in all orientations

And if so, it's not a far strech to say that the definition of polysexuality doesn't make sense because if you can't get rid of all nonbinary people from any sexuality, you are left with this

Attracted to all but men - lesbian/ straight

Attracted to all but women- gay/straight

Attracted all but nonbinary people - transphobic and doesn't see nonbinary people as nonbinary unless they're androgynous

So how do i feel these should be defined?

Bi - attraction to all genders with or without preference

Poly - not a thing. Like generally, we don't need it.
