All right I'll make a proper post about this lmfao. May I present

The Invalid's Guide to Making Money Off Mobile Games

(Please note I'm using my affiliate links, so if you click through and join up I will get rewarded at no cost to you.)

The primary way that I make money is through Swagbucks. (I also use Inbox Dollars, but I tend to use Swagbucks more for different deals. They're both owned by the same parent company.) Swagbucks is a survey website, but they also offer affiliate deals with mobile games. For proof that I'm not grifting, here is my profile.

Each swagbuck (SB) is a penny, so 100 is a dollar, 1000 is 10 dollars. As you can see as of posting this, I've earned 121, 297 SB or $1,212.97 since I started in January. I play various mobile games for a few hours every day, but I took a break for about a month and a half since I was getting burned out. I cash out to Paypal usually, but you can get a bunch of different gift cards, it's nice to be able to directly get people gift cards for their birthdays through the website.

There are a ton of different offers to choose from, from various sponsors of varying levels of credibility. They'll offer to complete different checkpoints within the game for SB within a certain amount of time.

When I'm looking for an offer to start, I'm looking for a few things in particular. The amount on offer has to be worth my time. Usually, I'm looking for offers in the $40-$150 range. Anything above that is likely to have a catch, require massive amounts of in-app purchases to complete, or is downright impossible. I always consult the swagbucks reddit to check out offers beforehand, so I don't waste my time. I also consider the time investment I'm putting in. Usually 1000 levels of a puzzle game for $35 is the minimum I'm looking for. For idle games, I'm looking more in the $50 minimum range.

This is one of the offers I'm currently working on. (the game is Klondike, for $110 total offer)

Typically with an offer in this range, I know I'm going to make a few purchases. I always try to go for stamina boosters on the cheap. I've spent about $5 so far and I'm only a week into this and already about 1/3 of the way done. I log in multiple times a day since I am, as I've stated, disabled, so I have the freedom to do so. If you do not have the ability to be so on top of things, I recommend looking at the second to last goal point, and making that your target.

Other offers are like this

(This is Ant Legion, a game I've played before). As you can see the amount on offer is significantly higher. $340 to be exact, though keep an eye out for things like "purchase X"--typically those are 1:1 rebates, so you get a boost for free. With these types of games, you're going to be making substantially more in-app purchases. When I try this offer, I'm going to budget about $40-$50 so that I'm still making a profit of about $285. Understand that there is risk involved--if I spend that money and I *don't* make it all the way to 31 in time, I'm SOL.

Swagbucks also offers gambling games. Just stay away from those. I did one and spent about $70 to make a profit of about $150, but none of it was from the app itself. They're predatory and meant to funnel in-app purchases, though again, check the reddit. There might be a couple that are legit.

Typically with Swagbucks, I like to be doing 3 offers at a time--two idle games, and one puzzle game. I'll check my idle games throughout the day to make progress, and sit and binge the puzzle games to get to the level checkpoints (Usually about 1000 levels, which isn't as bad as it sounds.)

Before I get into the next section, this is very important, please listen to me.

If you cash out for more than the minimum threshold for taxation in your country, you will owe taxes on the money you make.

You'll need to do research for your individual situation. For USAmericans, the threshold is $600. I budget about 10% of that to go into taxes, and I have a spreadsheet with receipts for in-app purchases which qualify as business expenses in this case. Here is the SB page for more info.

Next, I've just started using Mistplay after being bombarded with ads about it. generally, I like it. I'm also not saying that it's possible to double-dip SB and Mistplay rewards, because I would not do that because it's against terms and conditions, but it might be possible (though I definitely don't recommend it).

Mistplay works differently in that it offers 'units' for playing games for a certain amount of time. I've earned about 500 units in a day playing mobile games for a few hours, and minimum cash out starts at $5 for 1800 units. Overall it's a nice system that allows me to make money on more "fun" games that I'd otherwise be playing anyway without making money, such as for instance, Honkai: Star Rail which I'm planning on starting tonight. And if you do join Mistplay, this is my recruit link ;).

Overall tips:

be prepared to watch ads. I have my shit set up on multiple devices, I have a phone and a tablet with different games on each and I usually have ads going on on one screen while I'm playing merge what the fuck ever on the other. That's how they're making the money to give to you, pussy up etc.

It does take some dedication to rack up big numbers. I consider myself on a fairly relaxed grind and usually play mobile games for about four hours a day. You can try out your limits and whatnot

RESEARCH. you can download a game and test it outside of the SB tracking to try it out, or check out the subreddit. Mucho helpful information.

IF YOU DO AN OFFER and it DOES NOT TRACK CORRECTLY do not panic. Complete the offer to the best of your ability, take screenshots, and use the SB help center to request your missing SB credit. They usually get back to me within a business day with my shit in pending.

It's a slow crawl to victory. You'll be like "i am not making fucking ANYTHING." and then the next week you'll be like. pending for $100. Be patient.

So I left a lot of these non-existent or vague so people can plug in themselves and people they love BUT here’s who I picture 😍

Doc: I don’t really have an actor who fits her so I made this AI thing when I was thinking up the character? But I’ve pictured her as fairly petite (5’2”-5’4” ish?), small but not skinny, rounded but not thicc. Basically just the personification of softness and femininity. She’s got a lot of hair that’s wavy/curly that gets out of control easily and her personal style is the thrift shop version of Jess from New Girl. She looks like someone the apocalypse will chew up and spit out.

Andrew: my sweet baby angel! When we first meet him, he is 110% Lucas from Stranger Things. Fairly baby faced but brave in the face of it all - and still able to find happiness and joy. By the time Doc leaves the QZ, I’m kind of leaning Donald Glover? Someone mentioned they cast him as Andrew Garfield and I kinda love that too lol

Jess: Our third member of the codependency squad (who was honestly way understanding of her boyfriend/husband’s weird attachment and we love her for it) and resident comedian is, in my head, Doctor Who era Karen Gillan. Red hair, vibe of sass and strength but also naïveté (and so pretty that we can’t blame Andrew for gawking at her for months) we love her.

Derek: the good guy who might have been if it weren’t for trauma and Joel! He’s 40 year old James Marsden. Just… *chef’s kiss* Look between him, Joel and Tommy? Doc can PULL. Someone said they cast Oscar Isaac here and look… Oscar is like maybe the one man I might find more attractive than Pedro, it depends on the day BUT I cannot cast him as anything but a leading man. Oscar and Pedro can only be end game in my book (but I will accept any and all HC castings lol)

Kristen: Our favorite, competent as HELL trauma nurse! I pictured her as being unexpectedly feisty coming from a small, pretty, blonde package. Does she seem like someone you’d underestimate? Poor choice on your part but that’s her. Malin Akerman is who she is for me!

Marta: our tough still figuring it out assistant turned expert nurse! I wanted someone sweet but strong who could be both naive and brilliant, so Ana de Armas it is! Only realized just now that her name in Knives Out is also Marta lol I FORGOT THAT BUT OH WELL!

Elias: Our stalwart dogooder under the umbrella of FEDRA turned exhausted man trying to keep people alive, Elias is a kind hearted leader trying to do the best he can with what very little he has. His caring and drive I think are exemplified in Jimmy Smits - especially West Wing era Jimmy Smits at the beginning of the fic.

hi! when did matt said ‘who?’ when he was asked about nettles?? i heard that nowhere and im very interested if you have other ‘news’ like that cause i feel like everything that is said during con is being either twisted or hidden😔

It was at the talk in July at London Film Comic Con, I believe (there was a talk at the winter con in November last year too, I went to both)

It’s not a case of everything being twisted or hidden at these talks, it’s because Showmasters (the people who run the conventions) wouldn’t let us take videos 😭 they said at the beginning of both talks that photos were allowed but videos were not, and they’ve got security posted around the audience to make sure of it. Showmasters are also very tight and won’t let people take pictures of the guests (actors etc) at the tables or anything like that. Like during the July con I was going upstairs and I could see into the green screen area from above, and Matt was in there, so I went to take a photo but one of the staff got pissy at me and told me off because “you’re not allowed, it’s not fair on the people who paid money for their photos with him 😤”… like okay, love, I paid something like £235 for the diamond pass AND an additional £110 for another autograph so I could talk to him again, chill the fuck out. Basically Showmasters HATE the idea of people getting photos, autographs or anything from the actors for free since it means they as a company don’t make money off it.

(For the record Matt was super sweet and after his talk was taking photos with a kid dressed like his Doctor, he’s an awesome person)

Some other things I can remember off the top of my head (I’ve probably mentioned some of these before but oh well):

When asked if he was Team Black or Team Green, he said “is that a joke? Team Black”

Someone asked how he felt about certain deleted scenes being cut, namely the scene of Daemon hugging his daughters (which there’s a photo/still of) and he had no idea what we were talking about 💀 he joked that some of the audience must work for HBO because we seemed to know more than him about it

He said that Daemon does love Rhaenyra. “Is it a bit weird? Yeah” but he does love her

“Working with Emma D’Arcy is great”

“No one can trust Mushroom”

Both he and Emma looked at each other like “???????” When they read the choking scene because neither of them thought it made any fucking sense whatsoever

In July he confirmed that he’d been filming in Wales for S2 so we COULD be getting Daemyra scenes since I think Emma was also seen filming in Wales

The reason Olivia Cooke and Bethany Antonia (Alicent and Baela) cancelled their appearances at the con in July is because of filming conflicts, they had last minute changes to their filming schedules

Hasn’t read ALL of Fire and Blood, just the parts related to Daemon (I’m guessing the Dance of Dragons sections)

That man did NOT stop praising the absolute shit out of his co-stars by the way, especially Emma. He also used the correct pronouns for Emma the entire time he talked about them, which I know is a low bar to set but still, my point remains that Matt is just so respectful of Emma and clearly loves working with them

To add, sometimes the people at the con choose audience members with the STUPIDEST questions instead of fans with actual genuine ones - like in November when someone got the mic and asked him to give them middle names for their godchildren or something 💀

Adaptability increases STAB by 50% (from x1.5 to x2). Normal Gem increases a normal move by 50%. If you Tera into a type the pkmn already is, it increases stab by about 50%. Maybe more, maybe less. Porygon z has a 135 sp atk, and tri attack is 80 power. Porygon with adaptability, normal gem, and normal type tera is hitting its first tri attack at x3, and then x2.5 for as long as the tera lasts. Idk the stats for choice items, but i think choice specs would make it Worse.

Sylveon with pixilate is sorta similar. Pixilate turns normal moves into fairy and boosts power by 0.3, putting sylveon at a 1.8. Throat spray activates when a pkmn uses a sound based move and raises sp atk by 1 stage (0.5, so now at 2.3). Tera adds 0.5 (2.8), Sylveon has a 110 sp atk, and hyper voice is 90 power. Sylveon has basically a x3 boost for as long as its tera-ed, not including if it starts using calm mind to get it to x3.3 or higher

Basically Porygon has a 240 power move that can afflict status with a 135 sp atk, while Sylveon has a 250 power move that can hit multiple opponents with 110 sp atk. Ive also heard that dragon types are gonna get a huge buff through tera since they can turn into steel types to deal with all their weaknesses.

Forget Shedninja, same-type tera bonuses are what im terrified of. At least i can kill shedninja with leech seed, weather, or certain statuses (confusion, moves that do DoT and traps the pkmn). Sylveon and Porygon will simply leave a crater where i stand

Hello! I was recommend this blog.

Im new to preserving bones. I have trouble getting joint strings off from the bones. Any tips?

I had left a whole bird body in a bucket of water for many months. I dont remember how long, I put it in the shed and then forgot about it... Most of the meat was gone, just the skin and joints string.

English isnt my native language. I dont know what those strings are called.

Also. Do you need to put bones in soap water? I put some bones in hydrogen peroxide directly for few minutes because one blog said it will kill bacteria inside the bones. But should you first put them in soap water?

Hi Anon!

Did you keep the water heated? Ideally, you want to keep maceration water ( maceration is the bone cleaning method where you just let a carcass rot in a container of water ) heated to about 85 degrees Fahrenheit. If you don't keep it warm then you often end up with bits of tissue which don't rot, such as those strings you are dealing with. Those sound like tendons.

You can try cutting them off or using to pliers to remove them by hand. But the easiest and most thorough option would be to macerate more and let them finish rotting off. If all of the other tissue has already rotted off then you may have to add something a little "fresher" to get the bacteria responsible for decomp going again. You can just toss some meat scraps, another fresher dead animal, or even a cheap bear or a cup or two of scuzzy pond water added to the maceration water will work. Then make sure to keep the water heated. You can use a fish tank heater or a bucket heater. Don't change the water until the rest of the tissue has rotted off.

You can give bones a bath in soapy water. If I'm cleaning up some bones that are just dirty ( and don't have any meat or hide left on them ) then I'll give them a bath in some warm, soapy water and a gentle scrub with a bristle brush to remove any dirt or debris. Then I'll go ahead with the peroxide. Doing this keeps the peroxide from getting as dirty so I can reuse it if I want. But skipping ahead to peroxide shouldn't hurt anything.

The other time you might want to use soap is if you are degreasing bones. Bones that need to be degreased will be free of any meat or hide but might still smell foul, feel greasy or sticky to the touch, or have yellow/brown/orange etc stains set in the bone. When I degrease I use a fish tank or bucket heater to keep the water between 85-110 degrees Fahrenheit and use a few squirts of a good grease-cutting dish soap like Dawn. Change the water as it becomes cloudy or develops a film on the surface. Once it starts staying clear, let the bones dry and check how they look and smell. Keep degreasing if necessary or move on to whitening with hydrogen peroxide.

So just to recap, the basic bone cleaning process is:

Remove flesh. There are several ways to do this—letting nature do the work for you, dermestid beetles, or maceration are some of the best methods in my opinion. For maceration, keeping the water heated to around 85 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal. Don't change the water until the tissue has rotted off the bones or you'll lose your bacteria colony and the process slows way down. Don't add any sort of soap to this water.

Degrease if necessary. Sometimes you can skip this step, just depends on the bones. But if once all of the meat and hide have rotted off the bones and they still smell bad or are discolored then you'll need to degrease. I like to degrease with hot water and soap using the previously mentioned process.

Final step is whitening. Only use hydrogen peroxide to whiten bones—never use chlorine bleach or you'll risk damaging or destroying the bones. I use plain old 3% hydrogen peroxide to whiten. Let the bones soak in the peroxide in an open container out in direct sunlight until the bones are as white as you want. Keep in mind they will dry whiter than they appear when wet if you are aiming for a certain shade. And exposure to sunlight will degrade the peroxide faster so you may have to add more as you go along but I've always gotten much better whitening results doing it this way so the trade-off is worth it in my opinion.

chapter 122 spoilers

crawls out of my hovel to talk about chapter 122 (im not dead guys just busy as all get out FJDGHFD)

Mostly I'm making this for the sake of anyone confused by recent developments or maybe needing some reassurance that things are in fact okay and a certain puppy is only napping (and also because I'm having a swell time in general with recent developments but I'm very easy to satisfy)

Forgive me if this is a bit all over the place but i have. So many thoughts. And they all run into each other in one big mess.

The foreshadowing for Lily being a turncoat has been written on the wall for a long time now but it's actually nuts when you go back through everything how much sense it all makes.

For starters, from the very beginning, Lily has been someone who kept contact with the Envy pair

Next, Lily is the only person who could have helped Mikuni gather the love letter and diary for Misono to find, being that no one would question him rooting through Mikado’s personal belongings (and if they did, he could easily make them forget)

Third, I suspect that his babyfication was a result of him being at war with his inner demon about how they should proceed (I also think Mikuni had his own little bit of revenge against Lily for being complicit in the situation regarding Misono, and that while they had planned to have his Item broken, he doublecrossed Lily in how it happened.)

Fourth, Lily was the one who knew about the curse Germaine would plant on whoever killed him. He was also the one who immediately knew that Mahiru had found and contracted with Kuro, possibly because he’s the one who placed his comatose brother in Mahiru’s path.

And finally: Lily has always wanted to die.

What fucks me up the most though is that even now, Lily tells himself that he’s doing what he’s doing for Misono’s happiness. Which is definitely the crux of WHY he was babyfied for so long, I think. Servamps become overwhelmed by their demon when put through significant emotional turmoil to the point it causes a collapse of the self, as we've seen with Ildio, a little with Lawless, and maybe even Hugh a while back? Back when he was shown as an old man.

Anyway, Lily was, more than likely, spending this whole time arguing with his demon about whether or not to continue with the plan, especially after the display of faith Misono made towards him.

Ultimately he seems to have decided that the best thing for Misono is to continue with things as they are, and I’m really curious to see why that is… I also don’t think Tsurugi’s dead?? I think he, and the fire itself, are all one big illusion. The best way to trick the enemy is to also trick your Allies

If everyone thinks Tsurugi is dead, then no one can prepare for him to be a wrench in their plans.

Which brings me to my last point: one of the chapter color spreads was a piece titled "Red or White," in which characters were placed in either red or white suits.

Notice anything? Both Lily and Tsurugi are wearing red, the same color as Mikuni, which SEEMS to indicate that they are working with him (as are Hugh and Touma, which is hilarious) but there's also a more sinister reading of this which worries me significantly...

Red and White aren't just the colors of the factions in Alice in Wonderland, nor or they haphazardly chosen to represent the Alicein brothers here.

What if Servamps impart a positive bit of their Sin to their Eve, like

My #1 post of 2022

This has always been a favorite color spread of mine, and that's primarily because of just... How much personality and characterization shows through in each pose Strike chose for every character.

For Mahiru, his posture can only be described as “open”. He’s facing you head on, he’s leaning forward a little, he’s ready! He’s gonna go! He’s determined! It’s very simple but very direct, just like him.

Kuro’s pose is simple too, but there’s the subtle touch of his coat tails curling up and toward the “Throne” his Eve sits on. It’s protective, even if it’s not obvious.

Touma in contrast is totally closed off. His legs are crossed, his hand is hiding his mouth, his arm is close to his body, he doesn’t want to talk to anyone or be perceived by anything that isn’t afraid of him. Like Mahiru, he has one arm positioned correctly on the rests, but he seems… Stiff, doesn’t he? He’s threatening, calculating, and so very him, laughs

And then, behind him, Tsurugi is facing backwards, indicating that their relationship isn’t as cut and dry as it appears. It’s a literal “turning your back on,” yet his hands are literally tied, and he leans over Touma like he can’t decided whether he wants to be away from him or get closer to the man who saved his life.

And then there’s Envy pair. I love their positions the most because it’s so… Them. Mikuni, like Touma, is more closed off than Mahiru. Legs crossed, creating a literal barrier between himself and the viewer. And yet, he allows his face to be viewed in full, indicating he’s more comfortable with people than Touma is. He’s cheeky, goading, and most importantly? Relaxed. He’s not in any hurry, and he doesn’t feel like there’s anything which can move him from his seat.

As for Jeje, he and Tsurugi has similar poses in that neither of them are facing their “owners,” but Jeje, unlike Tsurugi, is FREE. His hands are free. Mikuni feels no need to bind him like Touma does Tsurugi, because he’s confident Jeje will not disobey or leave him. Jeje also has, tellingly, a gun pointed at the viewer. He’s on a constant vigil to protect not himself, but Mikuni, from harm. And yet… His gaze is fixated on the people to his left. Is he watching them for Mikuni’s sake? Or is he envious of the bonds he finds there, where the Kings give their attention to their subjects?

And finally… Tsubaki. Tsubaki, with his seemingly empty chair. His hand is draped over the back, blocking anyone from taking a seat. He, very clearly? Still considers it to be occupied. And now we know why.

None of my friends are watching The Ultimatum because apparently I'm the only good gay in my friend group so please give me all your thoughts. I want all of them.

i just finished watching the last two and when i tell you i have NEVER IN MY FUCKING LIFE been more vindicated by a reunion episode. i mean it. i watched the proposal episode and with the exception of ONE couple (we all know who...i hope we all know who. i hope we're all smart enough to know who!) i was progressively more outraged by all those decisions. you can tell im trying to be as least spoilery as possible because y'all need to go watch this mess for yourselves but jesus fucking christ. none of those people should've been together to begin with much less for however many years they have been together.

im 97.2% certain one of them is a full blown psycopath (i also hope we all know who it is) and aussie...oh my god aussie. throw the whole person away and start over. that's a ten-year-old child with zero communication skills in the body of a forty-two-year old. literally infuriating. they need at least five years of therapy twice a week before they get a waiver to date anyone.

this show is proof that all the conversations ive had this year about how everyone these days seems so fucking scared to move on from relationships that are NOT working and they're clinging to that shit for dear life out of convenience/habit when it's fucking clear as fucking day that they would at the very least be better off alone are accurate. ive had the same conversation at least a dozen times in the past few months. literally was having it with my therapist like two weeks ago and she was like "the majority of my friends and half of my clients are in one of those". y'all...LET SHIT GO. i don't care if you've been in it for two years or twenty years. if it's not actively making you better cut that chord. walk away. i promise you it feels better than being stuck lol. coasting is not where it's at. you deserve 110% every day.

Where I’m at right now:

I haven’t done any protest behavior so far. I realize now that on my old Angsty account my attachment style was activated and I was doing what’s called protest behavior. I didn’t know it at the time, in fact I wasn’t even aware that I had an attachment style. Today I realize that certain people can activate or deactivate me and it’s scary. I don’t want to be codependent on a relationship I have with someone and I also don’t want to feel smothered or like I have no space to myself. I read this book called attached that gives excellent advice on attachment styles and how to cope with them. It’s given me a newfound confidence in myself and helped me understand why I latch on to some people and detach from others. I haven’t been depressed in quite some time and I’m incredibly grateful for that. I spent the entire fall season in my room stuck in my head, crying every single day, wondering what was wrong with me and hating myself. Now I know that I was just activated, or rather my attachment style was. I wish I had known about attachment styles at that time, I feel like it would’ve really helped guide me through that time. I hurt some people that I cared about, or thought I cared about. I realize now that I was giving way too much of myself and also expecting too much in return. I know now that it’s selfish to give 110% of yourself and expect the same in return. I also know that it’s not fair to give someone my all no matter the person. I see now exactly how I have been affected and also how I hurt other people. I do believe that today I am aware of myself and my attachment style. I can start to see how I activate/ deactivate based on my attachment style. I know that it stems from a deep rooted fear that I have, but I know I that that fear I feel isn’t reality; rather, it’s just a feeling. I wish I could give people peace of mind. I wish I could take away their pain because I cannot stand seeing someone hurt. I think it’s because I know what it feels like to hurt alone and have no one notice. I just see myself hurting in that person and I want nothing more than to help. But, I know now that it’s better for me to offer comfort and advice (if it’s asked) instead of latching on to that person and trying to reassure them and then turn around and expect the same reassurance. I know today that I have to do what’s best for me and sometimes that’s walking through the most uncomfortable situations and leaving. I haven’t been stuck up in my room blaming myself for how things ended. I haven’t carried that shame or guilt on my shoulders because that’s not my cross to bare and I’ll be damned if I carry someone else’s ever again. I know today that I have to be my number 1 and that I cannot let someone dump their trauma on me because it’s painful and it’s not for me to bare. There are things that I wish I could say and I wish that I could get off my chest, but I don’t need the other person to hear me when I say this:

Im truly sorry for all of the trauma and pain you’ve gone through, but how dare you dump that all on me? How dare you minimize my own trauma and feelings. How dare you blame me for someone’s demise, how dare you blame me for someone’s near death experience and how dare you put that all on me? I am not your emotional punching bag and I am not the one that hurt you or caused any of that. I do not need you to reassure me, I do not need you in my life, I do not need you to be by my side, nor do I want you to be. You’re sick and toxic and I know that you’re hurting, but you cannot take that out on me.

I don’t need you to forgive me and I don’t need to forgive you. I don’t want it. I like who I am today and I’ll be damned if I ever question that based on how someone treats me. I hope that continue healing from this and I hope that I never befriend a person like you ever again. That was truly the worst friendship I have ever had in my entire life and one of the most painful experiences I’ve ever felt. And if that’s how I felt, I can’t imagine how you must feel day in and day out. I’m not going to allow you to minimize my feelings or compare your own trauma to me. I don’t care if YoUvE bEeN tHrOuGh WoRsE. That’s not an excuse for you to take it out on me or invalidate my own feelings.

You know something? Transformania did have alot of problems, but one thing it DID do well was what it did with this whole thematic thing I noticed with Drac and fire. There's MULTIPLE references to fire (and burning) throughout the movie series. Often of course associated somehow with the humans or how Drac relates to humanity.

I mean, Martha's death is associated with a fire set by humans. (It's unknown EXACTLY how she was killed, tho.) What is Drac told NOT to do to keep humans away from the hotel? Basically, Anything to do with fire. What draws Johnny to the hotel in the first place? The fire Drac and the zombies accidentally set in trying to scare away Mavis from the human world. Quasi tries to cook Johnny over a fire. Johnny helping Mavis see the sun without burning. (And that's not even counting his firey red hair.) Griffin using fire to spur Frank to try and scare the humans which leads to the humans helping Drac. Drac burning up in the sun to reach Johnny and bring him back. And at the end of movie 1, when Johnny is allowed to stay with Mavis, they shoot off fireworks, something that was forbidden before.

Now, 2 is a bit more subtle about the whole fire thing. But at the low point of Drac trying to turn Dennis into a vamp rather than a human, what happens? They accidentally set fire to Camp Winnipecaca. (To a certain extent, the bit around the campfire singing the sappy songs counts as well) Possessed Kakie, created by Vlad to turn Dennis into a Vamp, also had fire on him as well. Whereas Mavis often takes Dennis out in the sun till the end of the movie. Even Puppy! had Tinkles' destructive antics result in setting the lobby on fire.

In 3 (One of the best in the film series, in my opinion.) the fire comes back full force. ESPECIALLY with Ericka, although Van Helsing uses fire to force Frank to unmask himself and as an old man, he's almost constantly spewing steam from his mechanics. As much as Ericka is associated with water (the opposite of fire and the stuff surrounding the hotel, our character's home and sanctuary), she has at least 3, possibly 5 associations to fire. When Drac zinged with her, she was backed by fireworks. She tried to shoot Drac with a flare gun. The entire tango of death STARTS with Ericka LITERALLY leading Drac through fire. And Ericka's whole association with sunflowers, which, in addition to and because of their association with the sun, are associated with the element of fire. Not only THAT, but Ericka's engagement ring? It's a ruby, also associated with fire. To a certain extent, the whole bit if using a cruise to lure the monsters and using a Kraken to destroy them all ties into it: Water is safety/comfort/love/order/security, fire is risk/danger/hate/chaos/freedom.

Now we come to 4. First of all, you start with Johnny being turned into a literal fire breathing dragon, and many scenes that involve Human!Drac and the sun somehow. And even Johnny's moment of showing Drac how to look at the bright side - and Drac's analogy to how his life was before - involves a burnt marshmallow. You also have Mavis, Drac's daughter and really the last part of Martha he has, going through sun to save Johnny and being AIDED by the both monster and human members of the family so that she doesn't burn up.

Of course, all of this also gets interesting when you consider the fact Drac and Mavis have been implied to be jewish (and possibly Johnny as well.) And while not SUPER overt, Ericka's cross-stake implies the Van Helsings are christian. Something I'm sure was not lost on Sandler OR Genndy, who are both jewish. While not a jew myself (Disclaimer, I am a Christian.) I do know fire has some very specific associations, both good and bad, in jewish culture. 3 that come to mind that particularly apply to the symbolism surrounding fire and the messages in HT is Hannukah candles, the burning bush, and the incinerators used in the holocaust. All of which, I'm sure, inspired Sandler or Genndy or more likely both in the use of this symbolism. At least in part.

Just something I've noticed looking at the series as a whole. It's not something that's made a HUGE deal of in the series and if you're not thinking about it, you might not notice it. It took me a while to realize it myself, and I've been a fan of the series for a while even though my hyperfixation with it is rather recent. But there does seem to be quite a bit of insteresting and wonderfully deep symbolism around how fire is used in this series of films.

My #1 post of 2022

Something interesting I noticed in Transformania that makes me wonder if Ericka might have a sensitivity to loud sounds? Both times, Ericka covered her ears when Mavis and later Also Wanda, both of which most likely have more powerful hearing than a human, merely wince. Part of this could be Ericka having more exaggerated acting than most of the animated ladies of the franchise, but as someone with sensory issues MYSELF...
