Journey to the West Chapter 25

Today on Journey to the West with @journeythroughjourneytothewest Sun Wukong violates Tree Law. So lets get into it shall we?

So Tripitaka's disciples have all decided to play dumb about the missing fruit. Pigsy plays dumb (not that it would be hard for him) while Monkey starts acting defensive and snappish. Sandy meanwhile is just wisely silent. Eventually though Tripitaka is able to get Monkey to confess, while also being sure to throw Pigsy under the bus.

So Clear Breeze and Bright Moon immediately start tearing into the group and yelling at them about the missing fruit. Monkey, who notably hates being scolded, takes exception to this and decides he'll give them a *real* reason to yell. So Monkey makes a clone to take his place in being scolded while his real body goes back to the ginseng tree and uses his staff to knock it over. Since his staff is capped with gold, this also causes all the fruit to fall and assimilate into the ground. With that done Monkey returns to his place.

Meanwhile Clear Breeze and Bright Moon notice the monks are being awfully accepting of their lecture and begin to wonder if maybe they just miscounted and started yelling at them unjustly. So the two go back to the garden, only to find the broken tree on the ground. The two are horrified by this and begin to panic about what to do. Eventually the two decide that since they wouldn't be able to beat the four of them in a fight, it's better to stall them here until their master returns.

So Clear Breeze and Bright Moon return to the group with false cheer and say they were mistaken! All the fruits are of course perfectly accounted for! And that they are so sorry for their crass language earlier. Pigsy jumps on this like a complete idiot despite *knowing* that they are guilty, and scolds the two for being so quick to condemn them. Monkey meanwhile is much more suspicious and wonders if they somehow revived the tree. Tripitaka meanwhile is just grateful the situation resolved itself and asks for some rice so they can just eat and leave.

So Clear Breeze and Bright Moon serve them their meal...and then immediately lock all the doors in the house trapping them inside. They then reveal to them what really happened to the tree and start verbally tearing into them all again. Eventually the two get tired of yelling at them, and with I assume sore throats, return to their own rooms for the night. However the lecturing isn't over quite yet since now it's Tripitaka's turn. Tripitaka begins yelling at Monkey for the stunt he pulled, but Monkey tells him to relax and that they'll all just leave tonight. Sandy asks how they are supposed to leave when they've all been locked in, but Monkey isn't worried about that and says he'll find a way. Pigsy meanwhile says it would be easy enough for Monkey to just shapeshift in order to leave, and leave the rest of them behind to take the punishment. Tripitaka however says that if he does that he'll recite the tight fillet spell on Monkey. Pigsy however has no idea what that is, so Monkey explains about his cursed fillet and promises that it won't come to that and that they will all leave together.

So with that said, Monkey uses some lock picking magic to cause all the doors to unlock and swing open. You'd think a place like this would have better security then that, or at the very least that Monkey would never be troubled by a shut door again but... Anyways! So Monkey tells them to get ready to leave while he makes sure Clear Breeze and Bright Moon can't come after them while Tripitaka tells Monkey not to harm them. So Monkey uses some sleep inducing insects that he apparently won in a game of guess-fingers, which causes Clear Breeze and Bright Moon to fall into a deep sleep. With that the gang continues on their journey west. They travel all night without rest which Tripitaka is very cranky about. Monkey finally agrees to let everyone rest, which they do so, except for Monkey who just spends the night playing around.

Meanwhile the Great Immortal returns home only to find his disciples Clear Breeze and Bright Moon in an enchanted sleep. So he spits some water in their faces to wake them up. Which works. Clear Breeze and Bright Moon upon seeing their master immediately enter Snitch Mode and tell the immortal all about how Tripitaka came with his unruly disciples, including one Sun Wukong, who stole their fruit and struck down their tree.

The Great Immortal isn't angry with them, after all Sun Wukong is notorious for wreaking havoc in heaven and for his vast power. Instead he just asks them if they will be able to recognize them if they see them again. The two say they can, so The Great Immortal brings them with him to find them in order to bring them back to be whipped.

So the immortal manages to find them without to much trouble, although he does initially overshoot the distance by about 900 miles. When he does find Tripitaka and the gang he has Bright Moon and Clear Breeze confirm it for him, and then has them prepare the ropes while he goes down to capture them himself. So the immortal transforms himself into an ordinary Daoist and greets Tripitaka, asking him where he came from. So Tripitaka tells him that he came from the land of the east and is heading to the Western Heaven for scriptures. The Daoist then asks if Tripitaka just so happened to pass by his humble abode... the Five villages Abby. This gets Monkey's attention so he immediately jumps in to deny it and say they came another way. The Great Immortal gets mad that they dare deny it, so he and Sun Wukong start fighting. They fight for a little while before the Great Immortal whips out his magic sleeves and traps all four of them, and the horse in his sleeves. Pigsy tries to break them out by tearing a hole in the sleeves with his rake but to no avail and soon they all arrive back at the Abby.

So The Immortal brings them out one by one and ties them all to pillars. The horse meanwhile is just kind of tied up in the courtyard and even given some hay. Lucky.... Anyways, the Great Immortal then brings out a dragon hide whip which he soaks in water for a while, and then he says he is going to beat Tripitaka first since he is the senior member of the party. However when Monkey hears this he thinks that Tripitaka wouldn't be able to stand being flogged. So he speaks up, taking responsibility for stealing and eating the fruits and also for knocking down the tree and saying they should beat him first. Say what you want about Sun Wukong, but he IS loyal to Tripitaka and takes his guard dog duties very seriously, even this early in the story.

So The Immortal agrees and whips Monkey thirty times for the thirty lost fruits. However it doesn't have much effect on Monkey since he just changed his body to steel where he whipped. When that's done The Immortal once again wants to whip Tripitaka, for not disciplining his disciples and allowing them to be unruly. Sun Wukong once again speaks up for Tripitaka, saying that he had nothing to do with it since he was conversing with Clear Breeze and Bright Moon at the time and had no idea what was going on. So Monkey volunteers to be whipped again, and is given another thirty lashes. Monkey's legs are in pretty rough shape from the whipping by now, but at least he can't feel it.

By now it's gotten late, so The Immortal has the whip soaked in water again in order to punish them again tomorrow. And with that they all go to bed for the night. Tripitaka meanwhile is crying and having a miserable time being tied up like this and being punished with them even though he didn't even do anything! Monkey tells him to stop his whining after all he hasn't even been whipped! Tripitaka complains that the rope itself hurts, and Sandy and Pigsy are with him on this one. Monkey once again tells them to quit their bitching and that he's got this under control.

So Monkey easily wiggles out of the ropes and unties the other three. Then they gather their luggage and retrieve the horse. After that Monkey has them go fetch four willow tree's which Monkey then ties to the pillars and transforms them into identical copies of the four pilgrims that know how to make replies and respond to their names. With the duplicates now in place they once again flee from the Abby traveling all through the night. They travel for so long that Tripitaka even starts nodding off on the horse, which Monkey makes fun of him for, bragging that he himself could stay awake for a thousand nights and not get tired. Well we aren't all super powered celestial monkeys Sun Wukong!

Checking back in on how things are going back at the Abby, The Immortal is up and ready to whip them some more. He once again decides to start with 'Tripitaka' and this time and this time no one interjects with 'Tripitaka' simply telling him to 'go ahead'. So he whips 'Tripitaka' and then 'Pigsy', then 'Sandy' and finally it's back to 'Monkey' again. However the real Sun Wukong feels a disturbance in the force when they are getting ready to whip his willow replacement. Monkey hadn't planned on them whipping him again today since they whipped him yesterday and is forced to stop the spell, causing the willow tree's to revert back to their true form.

Seeing that they've been duped The Immortal once again sets out to pursue the pilgrims. Upon seeing that they are once again being chased Monkey tells Tripitaka to put away the word 'kindness' for a moment and instead allow them to use his personal favorite way of solving conflicts: Incredible Violence. And with that all three disciples face off against The Immortal. However despite all three of them fighting this time, The Immortal once again captures them all with just a wave of his sleeve.

This time they bind Tripitaka, Pigsy and Sandy to tree's but leave Monkey bound on the ground. They then proceed to bring out ten large bales of cloth which they then proceed to wrap Tripitaka, Pigsy and Sandy in. They then soak the cloth in lacquer and then they bring out a large frying pan and start boiling some oil. The Great Immortal gives the order to Fry Sun Wukong when it boils to repay the loss of his tree.

Sun Wukong has been joking around for the entirety of these preparations and still isn't worried, in fact an oil bath actually sounds rather nice. However he is a bit worried that there might be some kind of magic trick to the oil so when the time comes he transforms a stone lion statue to look like him, while he once again hides his true body in order to watch the proceedings. Once the oil is boiling the Daoist's try to pick 'Monkey' up to throw him into the pan but find him to heavy to move. Eventually twenty of them together are able to get the job done and throw 'him' into the pan. This turns out to be a bad idea though since not only does the oil splash out of the pan burning all the Daoist's, but the lion statue also manages to poke a whole in the pan.

The Immortal is pissed that Sun Wukong once again managed to escape his grasp, and even ruined his frying pan! In revenge he decides that it's now Tripitaka's turn to be boiled. Upon hearing this though, Sun Wukong knows that Tripitaka would never survive an oil bath and resolves to rescue him. So Monkey surrenders himself saying he simply had to relieve himself so that he didn't ruin their oil but now he is ready to go into the frying pan in Tripitaka's place.

We'll find out how that turned out for him next chapter!
