Hey 2010-2013 tumblr residents who have never left, I don’t have the poll function on this blog but as one of you, I would like us to gather ‘round and discuss something. I know the Onceler gets the title for the first documented tumblr sexy man, but given the chokehold Cecil Gershwin Palmer has had on here as a whole these last 11 years & his debut coinciding alongside the Onceler fandom domination, would it be more accurate to call him the standard?

I know I sound like I’m speaking blasphemy but hear me out. Many of the base line traits past winners of the tumblr sexy men generally have are actually closer to Cecil’s canon outfits, hair style, power scaling, sass, & personality as a whole (especially in fan works). And, tbh, past polls staff made went by most used tags at the time rather than long term lasting impact (which is one of the many reasons why Sans has been a power house for several years now despite the very obvious lull in Undertale fandom activity). If Onceler was truly the standard, Sans would have never qualified on the grounds of a lot of people want to fuck him as a skeleton rather than as a human & Reigen doesn’t have nearly as many aus to qualify in comparison to the majority of his past competitors. Furthermore a sexyman is supposed to be evil OR have a unique trait, which the Onceler doesn’t even meet because his power of being big oil is temporary & he guilt’s himself out of evil. And no- playing guitar isn’t unique when you think about all past winners; Sans and Reigen could sing and play the guitar but the Onceler can’t throw hands without needing money to hire people to do it for him. If you make Cecil the standard, there is no contradiction nor issue with the rules.

Anyways everyone chew it over, doubly those of us who could qualify for a veteran’s discount, because the new polling system made me realize staff kinda ignored Cecil & many other men properly for a while now on the grounds of trending popularity within the prior year instead of the actual requirements a character has to meet under the “Onceler” standards. And shout out to all the Onceler fans- sorry if I made you mad with this but we’ve needed to all collectively reconsider what the winners are actually referencing for a while now.

Matchup #7.1: Cecil Gershwin Palmer (Welcome to Night Vale) vs Teruki Hanazawa (Mob Psycho 100)

This is it! From 64 initial contenders, we're down to the final 2. Trexel Geistman from Stellar Firma took the third spot already, but who will be first on the podium? Who deserves a nice pair of golden crocs for just how BAD their fashion sense is?

For one last time, let's review their Fashion Crimes!

On the left side, rises Cecil Gershwin Palmer. Crowned the Tumblr sexyman, iconic enough to make it into so many tournaments, is he also Disastrous enough to win here? His run in this competition so far has been smooth, full of sweeps even against the toughest contenders. He has been often nominated for (all canonically):

his first date outfit being described as "my best tunic and furry pants"

wearing capri pants and a cummerbund to work

wearing yellow sponge clogs, cat ears, and tights to the opera

On the right, we have Teru. Oh Teru. While his fashion sense has inspired much art from his voters, he struggled in a couple of matchups, but Terunation always pulled through - even in the last 10 minutes in one case. Can he take down Cecil? Can he succeed where Reigen failed? Here are a few of his (illustrated) Fashion Crimes:

Vox canonically having fans while Alastor and Lucifer don't kinda make a bit of sense. Neither Alastor nor Lucifer have been seen in years, what with Aladtor disappearing for 7 years and Lucifer being a shut in. On top of that, seeing Alastor in person and recognizing him as such was probably a rarity since his medium is nonvisual in nature. So unless there's some sort of Naruto-esque Bingo Book with a list of all the major overlords out there, there's no reason for anyone to even know what Alastor looks like

anon it's funny you say this because I have earlier posts talking about random sinners who never met alastor misinterpreting how he looks based on vox's shitty drawing alone. characters without canon appearance have appeal too you know? alastor could still have a fanbase from that. also there is something appealing about just a voice you know. cecil gershwin palmer is not a sexyman for no reason.

I mean I do agree it makes the most sense for only vox to have fans but also. don't underestimate the power of a voice. alastor may have been gone for 7 years but the entirety of stayed gone still happened publicly. those sinners heard his voice, they saw the shitty drawing vox did. he could still have a fanbase based on that

okay my mind is reeling from the latest episode i'm going to fucking explode this is one of the best episodes... period

so cecil's dad... left when cecil was born. For what reason, it's hard to tell. The narrative certainly seems to be setting it up as a concious choice, framing him as an absent father rather than just a dead one. The line "It’s not incomprehensible that two living, physical people could haunt each other." makes me really think the Gershwin-Palmer relationship was not a healthy one in any way.

But either way, he left, and maybe he died after he left, or maybe he left because he died.

But he's gone, and it broke their mother. She mourned him, she was forever haunted by him, haunted by the him she saw in Cecil. It completely ruined any semblance of relationship she had with her kids. As Cecil tells us in 182 (It Sticks With You), "Our mother wouldn’t speak to us. She would just walk and walk, much faster than we could. I think she wanted to lose us in the shadowy labyrinth of tall trees. [...] we always found our mom. She was at the same old tree, leaving flowers at the base of its giant trunk. And we would hike home. I don’t remember who the flowers were for. Maybe she never said."

That's as plain as it gets. She abandoned them, consumed in her grief and her anger. And, as we learn in Ghost Stories, she never recovered.

There's also the oracle element, however. And the Mirrors. That's weird, right? The prophecy that Cecil would die, and it would involve a mirror? Is this real? Is this an element of her mental deterioration? I can't say for certain. I hope it's not, I don't want cecil to die by murder.

And the trees. God, the trees. The trees are fucking everywhere and this isn't necessarily an unanswered question, more of a thematic element I want to draw more attention to.

Cause we have all the drawings of trees in 245, and we have 182.

But then there's episode 132, "Bedtime Story."

And this is a DOOZY. This is a story Cecil's mother used to tell him (Not Abby?) meaning that:

there were times she did managed to be somewhat motherly, although perhaps this was influenced by her weird oracular relationship with him

she told him. A bedtime story. About a little boy who felt neglected by his family, so he went out and dug into the mud and turned into A TREE.

I just want you to really take that in. This little boy felt neglected by his family, so he turned into a tree and eventually grew to abandon his humanity to the point where he could no longer recognize or comprehend the passing of his own family.

"And then my mother would pat my head and say: "Good night, Cecil. Good night." Or so I imagined. By then, I was long asleep." Cecil's mom... probably didn't do that. But he imagined she did.

I've lost the spoons to write out a shitton of analysis but I haven't seen anyone bring up Bedtime Story in reference to ep 246 and I think they really should

Also something something "What would be worse than death? Living long enough to stop being a human" "Oh Cecil is... way older than he knows isn't he...."

every day I think about episode 73 - ‘triptych’ - and I think about This specifically:

I think about how— despite everything— despite all of the terrible things kevin has done, despite all of the crimes against night vale, despite all of the reasons cecil hates him— cecil still gave him the one thing he knew he needed most in that moment:

hope.

of course kevin doesn’t win, and he gets brainwashed by strexcorp and everything unfolds just the way it does in cecil’s timeline, but he didn’t tell kevin that.

I’ve seen some people in the fandom bring this interaction up as a criticism against cecil for giving kevin false hope, but… what was he supposed to say?

cecil knew he couldn’t change anything. he knew there was nothing he could do to actually ‘fix’ the kevin he knows today… but he knew he could also, at the very least, give him hope. and a listening ear. someone to offer reassurance, even for just a moment.

every day I think about how, despite his flaws, cecil is just fundamentally a kind person. he saw this younger kevin struggling in the same way he did when future kevin inflicted the same sort of pain against him and his town, and he took it as an opportunity to try and soften the blow the best he could.

Could you perhaps give me, as a person who hasn't listened to WTNV before, a basic summary? I'm really interested in learning more about it!

Ok. I have no idea how to answer that. But I'll try my best. This here will be the version without any major spoilers if you want more details about what happened in the seasons the lore and all you can either send an ask or just DM me (I will love to talk to you either way, bestie).

So let's go.

Welcome to Nightvale is a fiction podcast that mostly follows the (now mandatory) comunity radio show of the fictional city of Nightvale. "A friendly desert community where the sun is hot, the moon is beautiful, and mysterious lights pass overhead while we all pretend to sleep."

Nightvale is a strange city. With strange norms and where the unusual is normal. It's a very dangerous city as well, with tragedy and danger at every corner. But it's citzens are close knit, people care about each other and there's none of the types of bigotry we see on our world.

The voice that guides us through Nightvale is our friendly and wacky radio host: Cecil Gershwin Palmer. He is one of my favorite characthers and he is really weird and complex and the ultimate Tumblr Sexyman.

As the episodes go we are presented with more and more of this comunity and met is fascinating residents. Like Carlos, the scientist that came to Nightvale to study it because he and his team find the city to be the most scienticaly interesting comunity around (now while they have a past conected to Lubelle, Carlos and his team are the good scientists), Cecil falls in love with him the moment he meets him though Carlos takes longer to reciprocate. They are the main couple.

Some other famous characthers are John Peters (you know the farmer), Steve Carlsberg, the Glow Clous (all hail), Dana, Tamika Flyn, Old Woman Josie and the Erikas (the likely bíblical accurated angels and the old woman they live with), the Faceless Old Woman that secretly lives in the house of all nightvale citzens, Deb the sentient patch of haze, Kosheck the statiom cat, City Council (an entidy with many heads), Kevin and soo many more.

Nightvale is a mostly linear story that has been going for ten years with some arcs like Strext Corp, Lot 37, the Evil Beagle, Doctor Lubelle and the University of What It Is (the current one) and the slowly unconver of Cecil's confusing and misterious past that started with "Cassetes" the 33th episode years ago.

Is really good and created a lot of the tropes used in modern horror and comedy podcasts. It also was a strong step into good queer representatitivity having an openly jewish gay main characther whose queernes was never used as mockery since 2012 and whose main interest was a gay latino man who is described as being dark skinned. And the representatitivity only improved with time.

I feel like a lot of people don't know how 100% Tumblr Culture the character of Cecil Gershwin Palmer is. This is a character who, in the first episode, outs with the fact that he's gay so plainly and bluntly ("and I fell in love instantly") that some people didn't believe it was a thing until he got with the object of his affections several episodes later.

He has no canon character design. We do not know what he looks like. He's described as being "neither tall nor short, neither thin nor fat," and that's all we've got.

He lives in a paranormal surrealist horror town where there are ghosts and angels and monsters and a floating cat in the bathroom of the radio station, the manager of which is some kind of horrifying tentacle monster.

Cecil lost his mother under mysterious circumstances when he was a kid—not because of the paranormal surrealist horror, but because she was a severely mentally ill alcoholic who could not take care of her children. He delivers a beautiful soliloquy about it that is one of the best parts of the entire series.

His love interest, Carlos, was originally voiced by one of the writers; eventually they re-cast him to be played by a queer POC because the character is a queer POC and the team did not feel right not representing him properly.

His actor, also named Cecil, is an openly HIV+ gay man who brings some of the best energy to a live show that I've ever seen; if you get the chance to see WTNV live, do it.

This show is such a cornerstone of fandom on this platform that the WTNV crew was invited to DashCon as guests of honor. (They showed up, too, but I think we all know how that went. 2014 was a hell of a time.)

The exact way Cecil's voice continuously breaks in the post-weather portion of "215 - Sarah Sultan, Explained". Like he's on the verge of sobbing, yes, because his friend has been murdered out of the blue. But there's also the slight edge of laughter in those breaks. And it's not the laughter of hysteria that is common with grief, when facing the incomprehensible fact that your loved one no longer exists and she will never be in your future again. No, it's a self-deprecating laugh. How foolish you were to think that a fist-sized river rock could have ever been a person. It's stupid to grieve her because she couldn't have existed. And yet you do, even though you know in your bones that rocks aren't sentient.

A lesser form of this painful, self-conscious awareness graces Cecil's voice at the very end of "219 - The Traveling Tarot Reader" when he says "I think I wasted three bucks." Over ten years and two hundred episodes and I've never heard Cecil sound like that.

When going to the transcripts just now to get that quote, I see that the stage direction was [trying to convince himself it doesn’t mean anything].

Anyways, Cecil Baldwin is a phenomenal actor, and Cecil Gershwin Palmer owns my heart.
