Sailor-Aviator's Playlist Writing Challenge
Tumblr media
Hello, hello!! Welcome back to another writing challenge! This one also had a lot of votes in the poll I posted, so I figured why not go ahead and release it?
The Concept
I have what some might call an eclectic music taste. What does that mean? I like a bit of just about everything! So, I compiled a list of songs from my playlists that I thought might make good fanfic inspiration! As with my Christmas Challenge, there will be a limited number of spots for each song! Just send me a DM/ask telling me which song you'd like to choose and for which Top Gun character you'd like to write for!
The Rules
You may sign up for more than one slot as long as there are slots available. However, you can not take up two slots for the same song.
Tag your fics appropriately! (Angst, smut, fluff, warnings, etc.)
18+ ONLY!
This can be a series, a one-shot, moodboards, or even a collection of drabbles! Just have fun with it!
You MUST use your song in some way in the fic. For example, if your song is Two Doors Down by Dolly Parton, then you could write about going to a party or about being a Dagger's neighbor.
HAVE FUN!!!
This writing challenge will not have a time limit, and you can sign up whenever you want! When you are finished (or started the series/collection), you can shoot me the link so I can tag it below. Also, please tag me in the fic and tag the challenge! The more the merrier! Now, there are some popular artists on here, but I encourage EVERYONE to listen to ALL the songs before making your decisions!! I will add more songs if I need to as well!
Tagging a couple of mutuals who I think would be interested: @goldenseresinretriever @bobgasm @mamachasesmayhem @hangmansgbaby @jupitercomet @seresinhangmanjake @number-0-iz

Rating all the artists I’ve seen in concert
(It's long srry)
Innings festival 2023
The offspring : 8/10 First concert and also my first festival. I didn't really know many songs at the time but they put on a good show.
Weezer: 9/10 2nd artist at the same festival as offspring. Great show. Got weezered live. I wanna see them again someday
Green Day: 9/10 the main reason we went to the festival. They were amazing but Billie was sick so he didn't really sound as good as he could've. So happy that i got see them tho
This is why tour (7/20, 2023)
The Linda Lindas: 9/10 really good & high energy. I don't really remember anymore than that tbh
Paramore: 100/10 literally so perfect. Cried multiple times. The reason I even got to see them was because the concert we were going to got canceled and the nosebleed seats weren't super expensive
Jaws of life tour (11/7, 2023)
Destroy boys: 10/10 opened for ptv. Great energy. But it seemed like no one else in the crowd liked them
L.S. Dunes: 8/10 I love dunes <3 I wasn't super into them at the time but I got to see frank iero in person for it was amazing
Pierce the Veil: (the first time) 1000000/10 actually so amazing omfg. I was literally sobbing durring hold on till may and emergency contact
Saviors tour (9/14, 2024)
The Linda Lindas: 9/10 still really good. So glad I got to see them again (and across the street from where I saw them the first time lol)
Rancid: 9/10 really good but I don't really listen to them
The smashing pumpkins: 10/10 they were amazing & I learned I knew a lot more songs by them than I thought lol
Green day: 80/10 so glad I got to see one of the first bands I ever fell in love with. & having them play my 2 favorite albums by them was magical
WWWY 2024
Ls dunes : 10/10 only saw like half if their set but they were just as good at the first time I saw them
Mayday Parade : 10/10 I didn't really listen to them besides Jaimie all over before but they're one of my favorite bands now
Cobra starship : 10000/10 ahhhh so happy I got to see them. So much energy and sounded great
Simple plan : 8/10 I dont really listen to them but hearing the Scooby Doo theme was fun
Taking back Sunday : -80000/10 they fucking sucked. I'm lowkey worried for the singers health because I'm like 99% sure he was either super drunk or high. Was super disappointing cuz I was exited to see them
The used : 7/10 Bert sounded like shit but I expected it cuz I watched a few videos before. They were still pretty good
Pierce the veil: ajhhhhhhhhhh/10 omg I'm so happy I got to see them a second time. I'm so happy I got to hear 100 sleepless nights live
Jimmy eat world : 9/10 again dont really listen to may of their songs but they sounded pretty close to the recorded version imo
A day to remember : 9/10 soooo good. Only knew a few songs but they were so good & I need to listen to more of them
Fall out boy : 1000000/10 ahhhhhh the the second main reason I wanted to go. I'm so glad I finally got to heal my inner elementary school (and now) self by seeing them. Also them bringing out travie & doing cupids chokehold killed me
MCR: ∞/10 I think seeing them actually fixed everything wrong ever. I'm so greatfull that I got to see my favorite band of 3 years. I was actually sobbing by the end of the show & didn't stop until we pretty much had left the venue. It was such a magical experience and I don't think anything will ever compare to it

*runs into inbox clothes burning and disheveled* LAMPLIGHT QUESTIONS??? YOU WANT LAMPLIGHT QUESTIONS??? (i think you made that post like four days ago so i'm late but aaaaaaaa)
what do you think is like, The Turning Point in Martyn and Ren's companionship? Or if there's more than one already written, what's your favorite?
Is there a scene that you've really been excited to write for lamplight/one that you've written but haven't shown The Public yet?
In his original party, were there like, designated roles for everyone to play? Like healer/brawler/short-range/scholar etc? If so, what role do you think Martyn specialized in? And everyone else? Is there anything you would say lamplight Martyn is good at--- like a skill or something? Also, how long had the group been together before that incident at Dogwarts?
From what I can remember, Ren and Scar are the only Gods we've seen so far--- do you have an idea of any other familiar faces that are also Gods?
Do you have any other world-building details you wanna talk about? Any Martyn or Ren thoughts that you've been wanting to talk about?
Sorry if this is too many questions, you don't have to answer all of them! Give as vague answers as you please--- honestly, anything you say about the lamplight world i Will Chew Up Like Dog Toy, so put whatever you want!
Regardless, thank you for your writing and all your efforts! I hope you have a nice day ^_^
okay this is a massive ask with so many questions in it, so im gonna repeat/bold each question and deal w em one by one
i will put this under a cut bc it is So Long. below this cut is SO MUCH lamplight worldbuilding, like, So Much, so i hope you enjoy that
what do you think is like, The Turning Point in Martyn and Ren's companionship? Or if there's more than one already written, what's your favorite?
turning point... i guess it depends how you define a turning point? any point of development in their relationship? there's been a few--heliography, with Martyn deciding to swear a real oath to Ren (if still one he can back out of); sleeping hound, w Martyn realizing Ren wouldnt ever burn him; worship the ashes, love wins. there's another big one for Martyn planned that i havent written yet, and one, maybe two or three for Ren.
my favorite, tho, hmm... i think sleeping hound.
Is there a scene that you've really been excited to write for lamplight/one that you've written but haven't shown The Public yet?
i planned the scene for how Ren gets his body back literally day one of the damn fic and i still havent written it a year later i want to SO BAD YOU DONT UNDERSTAND
literally this one fuckign scene is part of the reason i STARTED WRITING THE DAMN FIC. crying
for the latter half, i posted this!
In his original party, were there like, designated roles for everyone to play? Like healer/brawler/short-range/scholar etc? If so, what role do you think Martyn specialized in? And everyone else?
i get so many questions abt martyns og party you think after a year i would have answers to them but my answer is unfortunately always that i am a treebark writer making a treebark au and it isnt relevant to ren and martyn doing ren and martyn things so i didnt really bother
that said! i dont think they necessarily had roles? they all strike me as pretty mid-level adventurers. theyre not chosen ones on holy quests. none of them are going to have songs sung about them for decades to come. they can hold their own, but they arent saving the world. theyre like,,, fantasy backpacking. doing some minor jobs sometimes. all of em are skilled enough w their weapons/magic but none of em are like, The Fighter or The Mage.
all of them are swordsmen tho bc i think swords are cool. i think Jimmy is better at it than you think he is, but not as good as he says. he will occasionally surprise you by doing something really cool and then when he turns around to brag about it he eats shit. jimmys magic really only affects the area immediately around himself
i asked local to weigh in on bigb bc thats who im least confident on and he suggested bigb using a fighting style that heavily relies on a shield? like sword in one hand shield in the other. i think thats very sick. also, bigbs magic only affects his own body
i can see Grian having some kinda little explosives he uses to fight, tho he clearly doesnt have them anymore (and doesnt need em--bro has talons these days). he used to be immune to magic, but bc of the watchers, he now has a magical core and can be cast on, which is new to him
their group didnt have a leader, either, and all decisions were just made as a group. if asked, both Martyn and Jimmy would say they were the leader (tho neither would boast this anymore, due to believing that would imply having lead Grian to his death). Grian used to handle their money (and hes annoyed about having lost it)
Is there anything you would say lamplight Martyn is good at--- like a skill or something?
he's a musician! it's come up a few times, but he's skilled in a few instruments and has a nice singing voice. hes played a lute on page, i believe, but i think he could also use a harmonica. dont worry abt whether or not those have been invented yet i dont care i just think he deserves one. probs knows a fair amount of songs thatre good in taverns and some dances that accompany them. if he ever got tired of adventuring, he could probs make a fair amount playing at bars (he'd probs do it to fundraise for himself if he didnt have to worry abt ren's lantern)
he's also a pretty decent cook. at least, Ren really likes his cooking, when he has a body again, tho Ren hasnt eaten anything in 20 years
he's generally pretty strong/fit w good stamina to walk all day long. when Ren has a body again, Martyn will be strong enough to lift him, even tho Ren is not much shorter/smaller than him. Ren finds this incredibly impressive. Ren finds everything Martyn does incredibly impressive
of course, there's also being a deadzone, making him completely immune to magic (within reason--if someone casts fireball at him hes still going to burn). charms and curses dont work on him at all, which is very helpful as an adventurer
Also, how long had the group been together before that incident at Dogwarts?
jimmy, grian, and martyn were childhood friends, all lived in the same town/neighborhood (Evo) and grew up together. bigb moved to their hometown/neighborhood when Dogwarts fell, he was about 10? theyve been friends ever since. so theyve known each other about 20 years minimum
(note on ages: i dont know how old any of these people actually are so in lamplight theyre all like early 30s. pretty sure grian and jimmy are like late 20s? and bigb and martyn are somewhere in their 30s? so i set em all as early 30s)
barely related, it does make me laugh Dogwarts has Watchers and Evo doesnt
From what I can remember, Ren and Scar are the only Gods we've seen so far--- do you have an idea of any other familiar faces that are also Gods?
the answer to this is uh. kind of long and a little bit hysterical. so ill first direct you to this paragraph from moonlight ch2
Tumblr media
i did actually have uh... a few things in mind for this? but not uh. not reasonable ones
so. quite a few of them. ill be honest. to fill the paragraph and make it long and expansive i recounted the pantheon from a zolu fic abt the entire strawhat pirate crew as gods which i wrote w my friend Sam when i was like 16. i do not think the strawhat pantheon is canon to lamplight but recalling the domains i used for the strawhats was how i made a lot of the list, so, uh, take that as you will
for other characters... the god of nothing is Scar. the god of death is Kristin. the god of blood is... not Technoblade, actually? tho ive thought abt him in Lamplight. i like to think he may actually also be a paladin, he travels around w Phil. gods of places references Ren but also is a shoutout specifically to my friend Zeph who loves place gods, so i just wanted the world to have lots of them
the god of survival is actually Martyn! in leaflight, the roleswap, Martyn has long since abandoned his post as a god, but he was born the god of survival
.....oh and uh. well. the god of decay is... me! my mcrp character on another server is the god of decay. the secret truth about this specific paragraph is i wrote the entire thing so i could make a cameo in lamplight
Do you have any other world-building details you wanna talk about?
magic system... have i told you guys about magical cores? i had some of this already in mind but typing it out i made up a lot more. it is also approaching 1am so if this doesnt make any sense that's why
every person in lamplight has a magical core. it's sort of like a,,, spiritual organ? a little core of magic in them which takes magic from the air and makes it usable for an individual. cores vary in size/reserve, which is how much magic a person can do at max / how much magic their core can store. they also vary in type/strength of magic, which i guess is what a person's core processes ambient magic as
people can usually only use one kind of magic, which corresponds to what their core is. i think the type of magic is mostly determined by what/who it works on. it might work on just you and the space around you, it might work on just objects, it might work on animals, it might work on other people. magic which works on just yourself is most common and weakest, and the majority of people have that
deadzones dont have a magical core At All. theres nothing in there. straight up missing an organ. most deadzones are born this way, but i can see it be possible to become one if you Really, REALLY exhaust your core, tho that's probs rare
casting a spell depends entirely on belief. if you believe it should work, and are confident in your spell, it should do what you want, esp if it's in your power. you can... probs push your limits a bit if youre super confident, and doing this enough with enough confidence is basically the closest thing to training one's magic a person can get?
related, i can see bc of this kids having magic thats just a little stronger than adults bc of this, which is cute. kids probs also have smaller cores w smaller reserves, tho im not sure how much a core grows as a person ages
inanimate objects dont have magical cores or innate magic. i said earlier i think the lamplight world has a lot of ambient magic just floating about (which is how cores refill back to baseline once you use magic), but it doesnt stick to things unless you make it. to cast on an object, you have to use magic from your own core to adhere it to the thing youre casting on (which is why spells casted on objects dont USUALLY last that long--as said in moonlight, most only last a short while, and ren's enchants only lasted for months is just bc he was insanely powerful). you basically give items a little piece of your core with an instruction of how to use it
(jimmy's magic i think affects himself and ambient magic around him, while bigb draws entirely on his own core and can only affect himself)
i dont know if animals have magical cores ive never thought about it until this exact second. probably, but not ones most creatures know how to use? magic is belief based, they might use magic a little bit on accident? i dont know. some monsters absolutely have magical cores they know how to use
this is probs how zombies work. i think it's either a curse cast by one very powerful god/magic user a long time ago, or that people need to be properly buried or else weird things happen to their lingering magical core. or smth. i havent entirely decided
to cast on a person, you need to get your magic to stick to, cover up, or drown out Their magical core, depending on the spell. spells cast on other people dont last very long bc magical cores dont tend to like things intruding on them. this is why deadzones cant be cast on--no core, nothing for other magic to stick to
it's a little bit like a sliding scale? "weakest" magic is yourself, it's easiest to cast on yourself bc your will is your own and should generally line up w your magic, so long as you believe in what you're doing. then ambient magic, bc it's just chillin, you just need a little extra strength to grab it. then objects, tho you have to share a little will to cast on objects. then animals, they usually have smaller magical cores than ppl, friendly animals are a bit easier to bend to your will, tho some animals are harder to cast on then others, esp hostile animals or monsters. then other people. people have their own will and their own cores that are most difficult to bend/influence. so magic that works on other ppl is the "strongest"
being able to cast on a later step on the scale, like animals or ppl, doesnt mean you can do all the steps before it, tho. Scar i think can ONLY cast on living things, his magic sorta specializes in sticking to other ppls' cores. i would imagine all magic users can cast on themselves at least a little tho
to cast on a deadzone, you have to first give them a magical core, which is incredibly difficult, unstable, and dangerous. it requires a lot of power and a lot of people, which is why it did such weird things to Grian
divine magical cores are on another level entirely compared to mortals, and tho ren's was impressive as a human, it got infinitely more powerful when he became a god. he's basically a well of magic all on his own, w no limit on the size/reserve of his core
ren is overflowing w magic, but it works only on inanimate objects (things that dont have wills of their own to fight his) and himself (obviously he doesnt have to fight his own will). if Martyn werent a deadzone, he could probablt have cast on late-series Martyn, as martyn's will as ren's paladin would probs line up w ren's own
none of these rules are super hard and set in stone. lamplight magic is vibe based first and foremost
uhhh. i dont know if this all made sense? if it doesnt feel free to ask follow up questions
oh, and before anyone asks:
jimmy has a slightly more powerful core than bigb bc he can cast on ambient magic and bigb cant. bigb's core is probs bigger than jimmy's tho, so he can use more magic / use magic for longer than jimmy can
Any Martyn or Ren thoughts that you've been wanting to talk about?
heres a fun fact: gods are supposed to give their paladins blessings. Ren is no exception to this, but bc Martyn has no magical core, he cant receive them. if he did, ren's blessings would be all about protection. it'd basically be like casting armor enchants like protection and unbreaking directly on martyn's body? he'd less likely to be directly injured and sturdier in general. he would also be completely resistant to any fire, not just ren.
(the thing i said earlier is sort of why blessings work for Ren despite the fact hes technically mortal, but for other gods blessings are automatic so long as the paladin's oath stands)
Ren is aware of the fact he should be able to bless Martyn and cant and is sort of upset about it, but he blessed his armor, so he thinks thatll have to be enough

Fandom: NCIS Character: Alden Parker & Jessica Knight (father/daughter relationship)
Author’s note: English is not my first language so I apologise for any mistakes.
Warnings: father/daughter relationship, Parker stepping in for Knight, listens to her, and gives advice.
Summary: Inspired by episode 21x5. A missing scene between Jess and Parker, and between Parker and Feng
Words: 2,720k
The plan
Knight sat alone in the break room, her thoughts swirling like a storm. The usual bustle of the NCIS office had quieted down to a gentle hum. It was one of those rare moments when she found herself truly alone, with nothing but her thoughts to keep her company.
She poked at the bag of chips in front of her, eating them with chopsticks as a means of distraction. The room was quiet, a temporary refuge from the pressures of the outside world, a place where she could pretend, if only for a few moments, that everything was under control. But deep down, she knew that wasn’t the case.
She was hiding—hiding from the expectations, the plan, and more immediately, from the conversation she knew she needed to have with her father. It was easier to stay in this room, avoiding the confrontation, than to face the disappointment she feared was inevitable.
Parker walked in, his expression softening when he saw her sitting there alone. He didn’t say anything at first, just grabbed a cup of coffee and made his way over to her. "You’re hiding from your father, Knight?" he asked, his voice tinged with sarcasm but also genuine.
Jess scoffed, trying to brush off the truth in his words. "Maybe," she replied, popping another chip into her mouth with the chopsticks.
Parker, ever the observer, pulled out a chair and sat down across from her, feeling that something was bothering her but didn’t push her. They sat in comfortable silence for a few minutes, the kind that spoke of understanding. Jess appreciated it; Parker wasn’t one to push unless he felt it was necessary.
After a while, the silence became too heavy for her to bear. She glanced up at Parker, her eyes filled with uncertainty, her voice low. "Do you think I’m a bad girlfriend?"
Parker paused mid-sip, surprised by the question. He looked at her, trying to gauge the depth of her concern. "For not telling your father about you and Jimmy?" he asked, unsure of what she was referring to.
She nodded, still avoiding his gaze, as if afraid to see judgment in his eyes. "There must be a reason why you didn’t," he said gently. "The question is, Is it a good one?"
Jess mulled over his words, the conflict within her surfacing. She loved Jimmy Palmer. He was her light after the darkness of losing her REACT team. He made her laugh and brought joy back into her life, and she adored his daughter, Victoria, who was like a mini version of him. Jess had never imagined herself as a mother figure, but with Vic, it felt natural, right even.
But then there was the plan—the plan she and her father had meticulously crafted over the years. A plan that had been ingrained in her since childhood, before she even understood what it meant to have a choice in her own life. Her father was her hero, but his expectations had always been a weight she carried.
"They're bad for the plan," she confessed quietly. "Jimmy and Vic."
Parker frowned slightly. "What plan?"
Jess sighed, knowing she had to explain further. "Ever since I was a kid, my father and I planned my career. Team leader, field office SAC, assistant director, and then NCIS director. It was all mapped out. But when I lost my team, everything changed. I joined this team, and I found a family. I found Jimmy. Suddenly, the idea of changing the plan didn’t seem so bad."
Her voice wavered, and Parker noticed the tears brimming in her eyes. It was rare to see her this vulnerable, and he felt out of his depth. He could handle crime scenes and tough decisions all day long, but emotional advice wasn’t his forte. Still, he knew what it felt like to be a disappointment in your father’s eyes.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a tissue, handing it to her with a soft smile. "You know, your father and mine are very similar," he began, catching her attention. "My father had our careers all planned out, too. But I ruined his plan when I ended up in juvie. As a Parker, I was supposed to join the Navy and wear the uniform. But I had other interests, and he hated me for years because of it. Joining the FBI didn’t help either."
Jess listened intently, surprised by his admission. Parker wasn’t one to share personal stories often, so when he did, it meant something. "But now your father is proud of you," she pointed out.
"Yeah, now," Parker agreed. "But it took years for us to get there. Every family dinner was a minefield of frustration and unspoken resentment. But I’m more than sure your father won’t hate you if you choose not to follow the plan."
Jess wasn’t convinced. "Are you sure? Because he already thinks that Jimmy, Vic, you and the team are a distraction."
Parker leaned back in his chair, studying her carefully. "What do you think, Jessica?"
The use of her full name caught her off guard. It was the first time he’d called her that since joining the team, and it made her pause. What did she think? She had spent so long focused on what her father wanted that she had never really considered her own desires.
"I love being a part of this team," she said slowly, almost as if she were discovering the truth as she spoke it. "It’s a blast, and I can’t imagine myself anywhere else. My father knows that—I’ve told him how much I enjoy working with all of you, how lucky I am to be here."
"But you love your father too, and you don’t want to let him down, right?" Parker asked gently.
She nodded, not needing to say the words aloud. He understood.
"Do you love Jimmy?" Parker continued.
"Yes," she answered without hesitation this time.
The truth was, she didn’t just love Jimmy—she was in love with him. It was a love that had grown gradually, naturally, rooted in shared experiences, late-night conversations, and the simple joy of being together. It was a love she hadn’t expected to find, especially not after the trauma of losing her REACT team.
"Do you see a future with him?"
"I hope so," Jess said, her voice filled with a mix of hope and uncertainty. "Right now, it feels right to be with him. But I don’t know what the future has in store for us."
Parker nodded, appreciating her honesty. "No one does. You like living in the present, but Jimmy wants stability, and you can’t blame him for that. He’s been through a lot, and he doesn’t want to lose you too."
Jess felt a pang of guilt. She knew Parker was right. Jimmy had endured so much, and she didn’t want to be the one to cause him more pain. She felt ashamed of the way she had been handling things, torn between her father’s expectations and her own happiness.
"As for your father," Parker continued, "just talk to him. Tell him everything you’ve told me. If he loves you, and I’m sure he does, he’ll trust your decision and be happy for you."
Jess smiled softly, feeling a bit lighter. "Thank you, Parker."
"But in case he doesn’t," Parker added with a small grin, "I’ll gladly have a little chat with the guy."
Jess blinked in surprise. She hadn’t expected that. "You’d do that for me?" she asked, her voice tinged with disbelief.
"Of course," Parker replied, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "You are part of my team, and so is Jimmy. Besides, I promised Gibbs I’d take care of the team. We have joint custody, as he put it, and you were included in that deal."
She laughed, the tension easing as she did. It was a genuine laugh, one that felt good after the heaviness of their conversation.
"Thank you," she said again, her voice filled with sincerity. "It means a lot to me."
"Anytime," Parker replied, his tone warm and reassuring.
They sat in silence once more, but this time it was a silence filled with understanding and mutual respect. Jess felt a new sense of clarity. She knew what she had to do—talk to her father, be honest about what she wanted, and trust that he would understand. And if he didn’t, she had Parker and the rest of the team to support her.
As they finished their break, Jess felt closer to Parker than ever before. He had shown her a side of himself she hadn’t seen, and in doing so, had helped her see a way forward. She realized that she was truly lucky to be part of this team—a team that felt like family. And for the first time in a long while, she felt at peace with the idea of breaking the plan and forging her own path.
Later that day, the NCIS office was abuzz with the usual activity as Parker made his way to the elevator. He had just finished a meeting with Director Vance when he noticed Feng Zhao waiting for the elevator. From her desk, Knight could see the interaction between the two men and wondered what could happen.
"Feng, mind if I join you?" Parker asked, stepping into the elevator.
"Of course, Alden," Zhao replied, a hint of curiosity in his voice, hitting the button for the floor he knew Parker was heading to.
But instead of letting the elevator continue its descent, Parker reached over and pressed the emergency stop button, bringing the elevator to a sudden halt.
Zhao raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement in his eyes. “I see you’ve learned some old tricks.”
Parker smiled, recalling how Gibbs used to do the same thing whenever he needed to have a serious talk with someone. “Sometimes the old ways are the best ways,” Parker said, leaning against the elevator wall. “I wanted to have a word with you, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity.”
Zhao crossed his arms, his expression unreadable. “I assume this is about Jessica.”
“It is,” Parker confirmed. “We all notice the tension between you, her, and Jimmy. She told me about the plan, and I get that you want what’s best for her. I just wanted to make sure that whatever problems you have, it’s not affecting the job.”
Feng didn’t respond and Parker studied him for a moment, understanding the struggle of a father watching his child grow up and make their own choices. It was a universal conflict—one that transcended careers and positions. But Parker also knew that Jess was no longer a child. She was a capable, intelligent woman who had earned her place in the agency and his team.
“Knight is one of the best agents I’ve ever worked with and an essential part of my team,” Parker said sincerely. “We’re on the same page when you say she could have more—no doubt about that. But she’s an adult, and she can make her own decisions. She’s happy with the team, and she’s happy with Jimmy, but she doesn’t want to let you down.”
Feng’s face softened further, the tough exterior cracking just a bit. “She could never let me down. I just want what’s best for her.”
Parker nodded, sensing the genuine care behind Feng’s words. “Then start listening to her. She knows what she’s doing.”
Feng was silent for a moment, considering Parker’s advice. To his eyes, Jess would always be his little girl, and it was hard to accept that she was now a grown woman with her own life, her own dreams.
“I’ve always wanted her to succeed, to be the best. I just… I don’t want her to lose sight of her potential.”
“And she won’t,” Parker assured him. “But potential isn’t just about titles or positions. It’s about finding fulfillment in what you do. She’s happy with where she is, and she’s with someone who cares about her deeply and I’m not talking just about Jimmy.”
“Thank you, Alden,” Feng finally said, his voice carrying a note of gratitude. “It’s good to see that you have her back.”
Parker offered a small, reassuring smile. “We’re a team. We have each other’s backs.”
Parker’s mind drifted back to his early days with the team. The day he had officially joined NCIS felt like a lifetime ago, and he could still remember the cautious, almost skeptical looks from the other agents. Taking Gibbs’ place was no small task, and he knew they had all been measuring him against their former leader. But among the wary faces, Jessica Knight had stood out as different.
Jess had been the first to extend a hand of trust, understanding what it was like to be the new addition to a close-knit group. She hadn’t hesitated to defend him when Torres or others crossed the line, and for that, Parker had always been grateful. Their bond had grown from that initial solidarity, and over time, Parker had come to see Jess as not just a valuable team member, but as a friend and on some level, the daughter he never had.
“I know it wasn’t easy for you at first,” Feng said as they walked toward the exit, his tone more conversational now. “Taking Gibbs’ place and all. But Jessica always spoke highly of you, and from what I’ve seen, your team respects you and trusts you.”
Parker glanced at Feng, a hint of surprise in his eyes. It wasn’t often that he received such straightforward praise, especially from someone as accomplished as Feng. “It’s all on them,” Parker replied humbly. “They’re good to work with and make a great team.”
Feng smiled slightly, the kind of smile that spoke of hard-earned respect. “I can see that. It’s clear that you’ve earned their trust, and that’s not an easy thing to do, especially with a team that was so close to Gibbs.”
Parker nodded, appreciating the recognition. “We’ve all found our rhythm now.”
“And Jimmy? How does he fit into all of this?”
Parker could hear the underlying concern in Feng’s voice. The protective father in him was trying to reconcile the plan with the reality of his daughter’s relationship. “Jimmy’s a good man,” Parker said firmly. “He cares about Knight deeply, and he’s been through a lot. They make each other happy, and that’s what matters.”
Feng nodded, processing Parker’s words. It was clear that he was still struggling with the idea of his daughter’s life diverging from the path they had laid out. But as he looked into Parker’s eyes, he saw something that gave him comfort—a deep, unwavering respect for his daughter and her choices.
“I’ll listen to what Jessica has to say,” Feng said finally, his voice carrying a note of resolve.
Parker smiled, knowing that this was the first step toward understanding. “That’s all she needs.” He said releasing the emergency stop, allowing the elevator to resume its descent.
As the elevator doors opened, they stepped out and Feng reached out to shake Parker’s hand, a gesture of mutual respect and understanding. “Thank you, Alden. I appreciate you looking out for her.”
“We’re a team,” Parker reiterated his grip firm. “And that includes making sure everyone has the support they need, on and off the field.”
Parker and Feng returned to the squad room, the tension from earlier had eased, replaced by mutual respect. They both knew there was still a case to solve. Knight was at her desk, reviewing files when she looked up and saw Parker and her father approaching. She noticed the subtle shift in their demeanor but neither of them said anything.
She had been anxiously wondering how their encounter might unfold. When her gaze met Parker’s, she gave him a sympathetic smile, filled with gratitude. It was clear that whatever was said in that elevator was all in her favor. “Thank you,” she muttered in his direction.
Parker returned the smile, offering a reassuring look that said, “Everything’s going to be okay”. He moved to his desk and started reviewing the latest updates on the case, but the warmth from Jessica’s smile lingered, grounding him.

I listened to Paul F. Tompkins' stand-up last week, a bandwagon-jumping move in anticipation of the fact that he might be doing Taskmaster. Listened to three of his albums and his TV special. I enjoyed them. They were a bit different than I'd expected, and I'm not sure why as I don't think I had any particular reason to expect anything in particular from his stand-up. I think I'd heard him compared to Mike Birbiglia before, so I may have been surprised when he didn't jump out any windows.
It was good though. I sort of stereotype American comedy as thinking it's all about sex and drugs, and Paul F. Tompkins... I mean, there were some drugs stories. More than I usually like. I don't object on puritan grounds or anything, I just find them fairly boring. But besides that, I liked his stories. The first couple of albums were fairly entertaining mostly unconnected routines, then I got to his 2012 album Labouring Under Delusions, which was a chronological autobiographical thing, and I thought that was fantastic. Takes you through from dropping out of college to hosting TV shows and acting in movies.
I did find it funny how his "showbiz stories" differed from what I'm used to, in terms of levels of glamour. British comedians tell name drop-y stories about "one time I was on a panel show and Jimmy Carr was there", Paul F. Tompkins' one was "One time I was reading for a movie and Tom Cruise showed up!"
To be honest, the main effect that stand-up had on me was reminding me how much I loved BoJack Horseman, which I tried to re-watch but somehow did not have it in my Non-British Sitcom sub-folder of my comedy hard drive, which is a massive oversight. That folder is meant to be for any show where I've seen every episode many times, at some point in the past 20 years, and have at times had in rotation as the go-to thing to put on when I'm eat a meal or staying up at night or something and would like televisual accompaniment. Preferably something I've already seen many times so it's an easy watch. I made that folder because it's nice to have those at my fingertips, so I don't have to mess around with the effort of increasingly sketchy streaming sites when I'm just trying to put on a show that I want to watch while being lazy.
So I downloaded BoJack Horseman, and while I was at it fixed a few other oversights, and I'm fairly sure this folder now covers most of my possible go-tos:
Tumblr media
It's my non-British sitcoms folder, unable to be just named "American sitcoms" because the Australian show Utopia is in there. Which I liked a lot for its first few seasons, and then it went weird right-wing in the last couple.
I meant to only dip into a couple of episodes of BoJack Horseman, but then I accidentally re-watched the entire first two seasons in about three days. God, that show is impressive. The continuity, the attention to detail, the background jokes, the foreground jokes, the complexities of characters.
I forgot how much happened in seasons 1 and 2. I think it may have got a bit uneven after those first couple, which may be why the stuff I remember most was near the beginning (and from the last season, which I also remember well and liked a lot). But those first seasons were very good.
I was also reminded of conversations I used to have with my friend, years ago, who watched BoJack Horseman and told me no fictional character had ever reminded him as much of a real person as Diane Nguyen did of me. And that is definitely the fictional character I relate to the most, out of all the fictional characters I've ever encountered. I'd love to say that makes me special in some way, but I'm pretty sure they were just really good at writing disillusioned self-hating frustrated feminists, better than anyone else I've seen try to do a character like that. Pretty sure the world is full of people who would look at that one and say "Oh yeah, that's what it's like. It's not that dramatic, it just makes you not want to go to work anymore." If you don't have a part where she spends three months sitting on her friend's couch drinking beer and throwing cans at the wall because life is pointless and nothing would be accomplished by going to work anyway, you haven't written the disillusioned feminist right. I'd forgotten that the part where Diane gets into a public fight with a powerful sex pest, loses that fight and gets told by all her friends that it's not a big deal even though every person on every side of that fight agrees that he did do all that stuff, then she goes off to try to work for a charity and learns that that is also bullshit, then spends three months drinking beer on a couch and giving up on life - that's all in season 2. For some reason I'd remembered that as taking place across multiple seasons. They really fucked with her across 12 episodes.
I love the way that show would play with perspective, write the rom-com episode from the POV of the character who was being inconvenienced by all the protagonist's romantic epiphanies, the wacky sitcom plots from the perspective of the characters who had to get shit done. And for the first while it looks like BoJack Horseman gets to be the brooding depressed main character and maybe Diane is the One Girl Who Could Be Brooding Enough To Understand Him For All His Flaws, With Her Cynical Wit. Like a reverse manic pixie dream girl. But by the end of season 2, we've seen enough from her perspective to see that actually it's her who's too flawed for everyone else, and she's just decided everyone else can sort their own lives out while she sits in the living room explaining:
Tumblr media
Anyway, sorry for starting a post about Paul F. Tompkins and finishing it about a fictional character (played very well but also rather problematically by Alison Brie, who is very white to be playing the Vietnamese-American character), I quite enjoyed his stand-up. I have also quite enjoyed suddenly and unexpectedly re-watching his sitcom all weekend. Though I might need a palette cleanser after being immersed in the levels of cynicism that show reached. Perhaps Community, for a far more hopeful tone and Alison Brie playing an excellent and more racially appropriate character.

You Want to Visit Theo's Grave
Start | Prev
“Let’s go see his grave first,” you decide.
Pat hums, amused. “I thought you might say that. Let’s go then,” they say. They back out of the parking spot and start navigating out of the parking lot.
“I wasn’t kidding when I said this would be a long drive though. He’s way up north,” Pat tells you. “We’re probably gonna have to switch out driving half way. Think you can handle it?”
You nod. “I think so. I managed to drive to the cabin and back okay, didn’t I?”
“Yeah, that’s true. We’ll switch when we stop for lunch then. And try to find a florist while we’re stopped.”
“A florist?”
Pat raises a brow. “You’re really going to visit his grave without bringing him some flowers? Rude,” they say, but their tone is teasing.
“Oh. I hadn’t thought about that,” you admit.
“Good thing you’ve got me around to remind you of your manners then,” they say without bite.
The car falls silent after that.
The drive stretches on mostly empty. Pat drives a little faster than might be legal.
After a bit, they speak up. “Okay it’s too quiet in here. You’re in charge of music now,” Pat says.
They don’t seem to look at you, though you can’t quite tell with the sunglasses, but they seem to sense your deer in headlights demeanor.
“Music stuff is in the glove box,” they remind you.
“Right.”
You open it to discover many CD’s in clear cases, all with handwritten labels. There’s also an aux cord, which you pull out before shutting the door again.
You hook up your phone and pull up your music app.
You have a lot of playlists made, but you figure the one labeled “Car Music - Pat Approved” is your best bet for now. Maybe when you get some down time you’ll give the rest a listen.
After setting the playlist to shuffle, Jimmy Eat World’s “Sweetness” starts playing through the speakers.
“That’s better,” Pat says.
The music makes the time go faster.
It’s a little frustrating listening to it though. None of it sounds familiar at all. You know music must have been very important to you before you lost your memory, considering how many band T-shirts you seem to own. You try to let the music elicit some emotion in you other than that frustration but you get nothing.
You wonder what kind of music Theo likes. Maybe you’ll ask him next time you see him.
Getting curious about Pat’s taste in music, too, you look through the glove compartment again.
They’ve got Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, R.E.M., the Eurythmics, Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark, and… none of this means anything to you because you don’t recall having heard any of their music.
Sighing, you close the glove compartment again after putting all the CDs away.
You’re just about to look back up at the road, when Pat says something, sounding urgent.
“Close your eyes.”
You look over at them. “What? Why?”
“Close your eyes, Sylv. Now.” Their tone brooks no argument.
You close your eyes. “Okay. Fine.”
“Good. Keep them closed until I say, alright? There’s something very dangerous happening,”
“Okay?” You do as you’re told.
You have to wonder what dangerous thing you could avoid simply by closing your eyes, but Pat has never steered you wrong.
Time moves a lot slower when your eyes are closed.
You wonder about how Pat is avoiding this dangerous thing, since they better not be driving with their eyes closed.
After more time passes, Pat finally says: “Okay, you can open your eyes now. Don’t look in the rearview mirror for a while though, okay?”
“Sure,” you agree, opening your eyes.
Your curiosity demands you look in the rear view, but you don’t want to invite trouble right now.
“What was that all about?”
“We just passed an urban legend,” Pat says, like that explains anything.
“Why did that require me to have my eyes closed?”
“Because, if you had looked at it, and it noticed you looking, it probably would have followed us. And we don’t need that kind of complication right now. One ghost and one mystery shadow person is quite enough,” they say.
You frown. “I thought you promised to help ghosts?”
Pat sighs. “Urban legends aren’t ghosts. Sometimes they start as ghosts, but they’re… a lot more dangerous. There’s no moving on for an urban legend, as long as there are people that believe in them. And they usually are pretty keen on killing people, so, you know. We don’t want to mess with that. Especially if we’re on the outs with the exorcist community at the moment,” Pat explains.
“Oh.” you say. Then, “Why didn’t you mention any of this while teaching me about ghosts?”
They sound rattled and a bit agitated. “Because they aren’t ghosts, and we do not fuck with them, like I just said. Don’t need info on something we aren’t going to touch with a 10 foot pole, huh?”
You don’t think that’s true, but you’re not going to argue that point right now. “You saw it, why isn’t it chasing us still?” you ask instead.
“I’m wearing sunglasses. It can’t tell for sure that I saw it, so it can’t follow us. Urban legends typically have rules. And we’ve passed this one before on our way down, so I got a chance to find out what those rules were,” they say.
You suppose that makes sense.
“So what sort of legend was it?”
“Repeating the legend gives it more power,” Pat says.
That sounds like a cop out, but you don’t say as much.
Pat sighs. “But. I can tell you the general idea. Hitchhiker gets murdered, they become an angry ghost, legend states that if you pick them up, they kill you in revenge against the person that picked them up and killed them, if you see them and pass them by they follow you and kill you for not trying to help them. The only way to pass safely is to make it seem like you never saw them,” they explain, sounding a little agitated.
“That sounds like most people would end up dead passing that stretch of road then,” you say.
“Yeah, well. It only effects people who have heard the legend and believe it, or people who are sensitive to supernatural phenomena. Like us,” they say.
“Oh. That sucks,” you say.
“It does suck. I totally forgot I needed to watch out for that,” they grumble. You realize they might be grumpy because they’re upset with themself.
“Anyway,” they say to change the subject. “Can you skip this song? I’m not in the mood for it.”
You do as you’re asked. The next song is “Little Talks” by of Monsters and Men.
Pat sighs like they’re not in the mood for this one either, but they don’t ask you to skip it.
Conversation peters out between the two of you, and the road stretches on as your journey continues.

More Umbra Ben ideas I thought of (also if you have ideas for a better sounding name, feel free to suggest it 😭)
-He knows how to pose for the camera. If he sees a camera pointed his way, he’ll probably show off even more than usual.
-I forgot about his version of Snake/Centipede within. His is Viper Within. Specifically, he’s a horned viper. While we’re on the topic, I’ve decided to change his flight beast to a Hawk. Idk why but it seems to suit him more to me.
-Gwen also has her own Beast Within forms: Eagle Owl for flight, Doves for her Bat within, a Red Wolf for land, and I haven’t decided on her Snake Within yet.
-Unfortunately, Nyancy Chan would be able to control him if - and only if - he’s in his tiger form. The same goes for Bayonetta and Jeanne. None of them would take kindly to being treated like an exotic cat.
-Speaking of his Tiger form, he’ll lounge around in it sometimes.
-I forgot to mention this, but he is famous like Prime. I don’t think he’s quite as popular though because of the whole demonic thing he has going on. Doesn’t stop him from having plenty of fans, though. He just has more critics, too.
-Similar to Prime, Harangue is a big critic of his. However, unlike Prime Harangue, his arguments come from a genuine place of concern, not xenophobia. He’s also a very good reporter in general with a high moral standard. He’s basically the polar opposite of Prime Harangue.
-Ben’s probably said a million times to not contract a demon or practice Umbran arts or literally do anything with demons bc it’s far more dangerous than he makes it look. Though he usually scoffs are the overbearing parents and their cries of Santanism, he doesn’t actually want anyone to get hurt trying to emulate him. He definitely doesn’t want anyone to land themselves in a contract with a demon.
-Despite his warnings, people do try to summon demons, and every now and then, it actually works. He’s definitely had to save someone from a demon they’ve summoned at least once.
-Jimmy Jones is one such idiot who has probably summoned a demon and Ben had to save him.
-Kevin in this world isn’t a Lumen or Umbra. Rather, he’s got the same absorption powers as his Prime counterpart. I wanted to keep it this way so the trio could represent the three worlds: Paradiso (Gwen), Inferno (Ben), and Chaos (Kevin). I really haven’t decided too much else about him, but I don’t imagine him to be quite as scruffy as Prime Kevin. I think he’d go down a route similar to Enzo where he’s underhanded but more well put together. He doesn’t necessarily look like a thug on the outside, but he’s still got a lot of shady contacts, one of which is actually Enzo. In fact, Enzo was how Ben and Gwen met back up with Kevin once they were teenagers.
-This Ben is also allergic to peanuts, and he’s very militant about not eating them. If he’s gonna die, he doesn’t want peanuts to be the reason.

hello, tumblr, i am 30 years old and i got into baking and cooking on october 7, 2023–if you know anything about october 7, 2023, you should know how much all of this means to me 😅 i’m a gentile girl trying to be a mensch. am yisrael chai, don’t even think about it 🇮🇱
a little bit about me: i am an artist and a writer with a long background in science and engineering. i love animals (namely, dogs, cats, horses, birds, bats, rabbits, and reptiles), cartoons, books, and movies. i’m a hockey player at heart. i love formula 1. i love top gear and those three zany british men. i love the winter olympics. i love halloween and christmas. i’m a west coast girl. i love hawai’i and the ocean. i’m making a graphic novel. i was friends with chris cornell (yes, him). i’m a grunge fan but grunge fans don’t like me, though: you know that weird little alt rock kid seeing the heavy metal band that no one thinks about? that’s me.
i struggled with anorexia in my late teen years and obesity in the back half of my twenties: if you want to know what it’s like to deal with a debilitating eating disorder and then push nearly 300 pounds, imagine you’re drowning… and then someone hands you a big wedding cake. all jokes aside, i actually have a fat kink, if you can believe that. i actually have a number of kinks, but that’s one of my main ones. i deliberately gained weight to heal from my eating disorder, and to fulfill something that i had been curious about pretty much my whole life (like, “what if i got really fat, as fat as i could be?”) and i felt good. i loved being heavy and the idea of being a “big beautiful woman” if you will (especially when fat women have been worshipped for millennia; the whole skinny craze is relatively new). but i couldn’t keep it up, though: i started having trouble with my heart and my stomach, i was having migraines, and most of all, i was getting edema in my feet.
as of my writing this, since i started losing weight back in mid-july, i have lost 59 pounds, down from my heaviest ever at 268: i crossed the 200 pound threshold back in 2015, and now that i write it out, it would’ve been something to hit that number again after ten years (i’ll go with nine, though 🤷🏻‍♀️).
i’m pansexual and polyamorous. i’m single… but jimmy cracked corn and i don’t care (really, i don’t even think about relationships). i do have a crush, though, on a jewish man and i’ve felt this way about him for almost three years now. i have a crush on him (and he’s even said “i love you” to me) even though he’s in a relationship… yeah. the love of my life is with someone else. but like, i want to see him happy, though, you know? i love him perhaps more so following october 7.
october 7. the day of that attack—the day, the very day—i baked my very first loaf of bread, a simple bloomer courtesy of paul hollywood, one of my influences in the culinary world: as the dough was proofing, i saw a huge horde of people posting about palestine and israel, and it reminded me of a guy who ran into a convenience store at the start of the pandemic and he yelled out, “can someone please tell me what the hell is going on?” that was my reaction to it all. i just wanted to know what had happened and no one would tell me… and a friend of mine finally said “pray for israel.” i asked what happened and she told me. i just foresaw everything unraveling from that point forward. so i took the bloomer out of the oven and it felt fated, like it was meant to be. my basic thought was “the world is going to need art and words, and also, people willing to get down and make things to eat”. this is going down fast. (in other words, my healing my body from itself and satisfying a kink had a point after all 😜).
and it might seem counterintuitive, but baking and cooking has actually helped me lose even more weight than i can ever imagine (besides weightlifting and aerobics and boxing and martial arts and yoga, of course). you might think that baking cakes and pies and cookies and making dinner every night would make me 300+ pounds tout suite, but it’s actually done the opposite (so, sorry, feeder community)—and if anything, i enjoy every cookie and slice of cake now. there’s no fad diets here or anything fancy with me, and even with 60 pounds lost i still have a chubby belly (i don’t mind, though—my stomach has been through a lot, it should keep *something*), so i’m definitely not a fitblr.
since october, i’ve felt this need to blog my journey in baking and cooking, and away from my personal blog, too. stuff i made, recipes i think of (and maybe some that need to be passed on, too?), and food i want to make.
my art blog is on here at nuagederose—i also have a therapy blog, theghostandthehealer—and my instagram is badmotorartist. if erotic band fiction (among other things) is your thing, my ao3 is josiebelladonna.
and yeah, i’m 30 and i think i found the proverbial missing jigsaw puzzle piece. age really is just a number!

fall out boy was a religious experience tonight. Kintsugi kid took me out back and shot me straight through the heart. I had neon in the nighttime on my wrist. I never thought I’d hear Disloyal Order or I am My Own Muse or Reinventing the Wheel live. If it turns out that all it takes for me to feel alright is a baseline reverberating in my bones and lyrics that once gutted me that I now scream along to, I think I’ll make it through. I got choked up screaming detox just to retox.
games we play were cool, hot mulligan was awesome, and I think Jimmy Eat World blew me away even more than I thought they would. Gonna be honest, the live version of Sweetness was beautiful. I already loved that song now I like it even more.
I’d also like to apologize to the two thirty-something couples on either side of me sorry if I sang too loud sometimes. (The guy to my right had this dope sequined jacket though).
I’ll try to upload some photos in the morning or a bit later, I think I might have gotten some good ones. Although idk since my phone camera isn’t the greatest.

Desert Island Discs
Tagged by @jamilas-pen and @a-noble-dragon @saraminia 🤍
You're stranded on a desert island, but you can pick eight recordings, a book and a luxury item to have with you. You get the complete works of Shakespeare and the Bible/other appropriate religious or philosophical book as a 'freebie'. The luxury item must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside. What do you take? Say as much or as little as you like about why you made those picks
Please know this was so hard!! At first I thought 'recordings' meant whole albums and then I read your list and was very wrong 😅
Recordings
Jimmy Eat World - A Praise Chorus This isn’t my all time favourite JEW song but it is still very much loved and it's a really fun song to sing along to, has a great beat, is motivational and I can listen to it over and over - all qualities I think would be important if I’m stuck on a desert island.
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody A song with multiple genres, also fun to sing along to, and goes for six minutes? Yes plz.
Erik Satie - Gymnopédies A melancholic piece of music for when my brain is tired of listening to words. It’s beautiful to listen to if you concentrate on it but also something to have on that’s not invasive just to quell silence without even realising. I'll lay on the beach and ponder about life and when the hell I'm going to be rescued.
Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way I love the rhythm of this song and I can see myself dancing in the sand to it.
Empty Chairs at Empty Tables - Ramin Karimloo and Hadley Fraser specifically this version. The beginning is so fun to watch. Their voices together are beautiful and powerful. I watch it multiple times every time I come across it. And I need some show tunes to get me through my days.
Taking Back Sunday - There’s No ‘I’ In Team My favourite TBS song. I’m not sure I’ll ever grow out of being an emo kid and to me the album this song is from is genre defining.
Noah Reid - Runaway Obviously I have to have an olreid tune and this is one of those songs that I can listen to over and over and it feels new each time.
Of Monsters and Men - Crystals This is another song that I can just have on repeat and it feels like it’s scratching an itch in my ear. I think it’s the rhythm section - so bold, but also the melody is just pretty and relaxing. Also a great sing along song.
Book
The Faraway Tree Series - Enid Blyton I think this was harder than the songs. Mainly because I can't think of a book I've read more than once in the recent past. But when I was a kid I was obsessed with this series, in particular The Folk Of The Faraway Tree and reread it so many times I could recite pages of it verbatim. This would be a nice easy, escapism read.
Luxury Item
Does an entire bed and all it's accoutrements count as one thing? If not then I'll just take the doona, because I can't sleep if it's cold and I'd imagine that a deserted island would be quite cool at night. Also I can use it as a tent like thing during the day and hopefully it'll cover me from creepy crawlies at night too.
This was v fun to think about!
I'll no pressure tag @ramonaflow @stargazer56 @carolrain @tyfinn if they want to play 🏝️

One Piece: ep 5 spoilers
damn
First I've got to say that in Sims 3 there's this world that's got a pirate ship pulled up on the beach that you can eat out at in one of the worlds and yeah, I loved that ship. I miss that ship in sims 4.
I really enjoy the chef character too. I mean, yes, the one in charge of the kitchen - his mustache is magnificent - but the - and I never thought I'd say these words together - rebellious flirt line chef - is an interesting character as well and now that Luffy's found out what his dream is I can only assume he's going to become the next adopted crew member since that seems to be the resume for the job. That should be good for Luffy's stomach at the very least.
I also liked Nami's bit of this episode. First the drinking game with Zoro and then her decision not to split the crew with the Jimmy Buffett captain and run off. Both of them were well directed to put the emphasis on her and the actress really sold it with her facial expressions. Usually I'd find the 'only out for herself' girl annoying by this point in the series but she's allowed to be human and bond and have a growing friendship with the crew and care about them and I really still enjoy her. Her still always ready to make a run for it makes her interesting instead of annoying.
I also really like the introduction of the Shirtless Spanish Musketeer. I was all set to dislike him and be annoyed with him because he was so OP and that's usually a sign that he's going to annoy instead of entertain me - the yellow eyes weren't helping - but no! No, by the end of the episode I thoroughly like him and can't wait to see him come back down the line.
And of course we were all waiting for Zoro. I enjoyed him this episode too, of course I did, but he had a very standard roll to play. The actor did it very well, I really enjoyed watching it play out, but so much of this series so far has been new stuff for me that the fight was just a solid part of the story progression, not anything zingy for me. Good and I get why we had to have it but I'm glad we did it so we can get on with other things. I also think having the SSM be his goal is a really interesting bit because I really liked SSM so I'm looking forward to seeing where that goes down the line. I also appreciate that the white sword held up when his own broke. I'm not overly worried about him dying, we're too early in and I'm pretty sure I've seen him in manga for a long time past the first year of it but I'm curious to see how the show plays a wound that bad and its effect on him.
Lastly, still liking Garp. Him being meal fixated is a funny touch and I appreciate it. I also appreciate how he took the time to explain to Coby what was going on. Also like that Blond Guy also took the time to explain to Coby how the world was. Am I getting a budding teammate storyline with them? I hope so. I really enjoy that their interaction can be more than just 'dumb bully' 'smart kid'.
Another great episode. Thumbs up. I'm hungry though and there's no way the bagel I just had is going to take the place of the food I saw on the show. Of to be a starving pirate washed up on the shores of a floating fish restaurant.

Hehe what is smut but an excuse for gratuitous amounts of world building
I fucking love those ideas , renfields as an adaption to certain environments ( I’m guessing it would favour higher human population areas myself but that’s just my take) makes sense to me , humans will attempt to pack bond with a rock we’re certainly risk taking enough to attempt a negotiation with the local apex predator to get it to eat throg in the cave over the other side of the valley, I’d be willing to bet some vampires would play ball if food availability wasn’t the most pressing issue.
Vampires are people despite being horrifying monsters from our perspective ( without watering down the horror) is somthing i really loved from the original books as well it’s one of the things I enjoyed about the Valerie - brüks interactions, you get to watch his reactions as a shit scared prey animal only able to consider her actions from the angle of “all this thing thinks about all day every day is hurting me” but also consider other motives than “ to rustle human jimmies” . Like I think her behavior at the end in the desert was sort of an attempt at affection- obviously to manipulate him into staying where she wanted him and weird even for a vampire because she got raised in a lab but I think it shows that vampires are at least capable of it as their own thing rather than just pure imitation.
Anyway sorry this went all over the place, that outline sounds really great I really hope it works out .
I'm glad you like the idea! I've had such fun playing with it but totally got off the rails in the worldbuilding.
I really feel bad for the vampires in the books because baseline humans look at them and think "how can this person disrupt my life/my community/my society?" instead of "how can I make space in my life/community/society for this person?"
Like in Valerie's case I don't think there would be any reason to think she would be a violent person if she had been given the means to lead a life that let her pursue all kinds of interests and relationships. We never get to see a vampire character who has any kind of family or friends, it totally sucks for them.
I was originally thinking of just writing something quick and dirty but like so many people before me, I got too invested in backstories and characters.
Here's a chunk I've written that I like. The character names--Cyrus for the vampire and Danielle for the woman--are both placeholders unless I end up liking them a lot.
"You begin this attraction when you're still very young," he said. He'd always avoided acknowledging it, but she was grown and he could no longer hide from her affections.
"Well, I was always interested in you."
"I'm interesting," he admitted, a little smug. "But this is attraction. Am I attractive?"
He knew the answer already. "Well I think so," she said. His long fingers touched her cheek and her neck. It didn't bother him when strange humans were tense around him, but it never made him feel good, either. But a calm human? This woman showing him that his presence could be a source of ease or happy excitement? That felt miraculous.
Cyrus' academic curiosity was intense enough that if he left it unchecked, it would derail any ability to flirt. He surrendered to it for just a moment. "When do you first decide that I am attractive? Why?"
"Probably when I was about eleven, some time during the divorce," she said. Danielle brought a hand up to her face to shield her mouth in embarrassment of something she had not yet shared. "I found videos of you giving presentations. I thought you had a sexy accent."
He laughed. Vampires' mouths and throats were shaped just differently enough to make some sounds difficult in many languages. In baseline humans it would have been called a speech impediment. Combined with his refusal to use the past tense unless writing for publication, he sounded like he might have learned English later in life. "You think I'm foreign?"
She covered more of her reddening face. "I know! It's ridiculous. But I thought you were like some kind of European or something!"
All of his teeth showed when he leaned his head back and laughed again. "It's not the first time I hear this. There is a discussion among the vampiro-linguists about how to describe it and some people say vampire accent."
"Well, I don't know about other vampires," she said. Other vampires still had the capacity to unsettle her. "But when you talk, it's hot."
I think this makes a little more sense if you've heard the blindsight and echopraxia audiobooks, where the reader gives Sarasti and Valerie what really does sound like an accent, but even if you just go by the text they do speak strangely enough that they could be mistaken as non-native english speakers.

Y'ALL REMEMBER THIS DREAM I HAD ONE YEAR AGO ?
Well during my hiatus out of NOWHERE I had another dream taking place in the SAME HC continuity. One year ago I had a dream that had the black feathered one be the brother of Beaky's mom and the brown one be Beaky's dad who has just a fling with her, and for being useless parasitic hunters she had kicked out both. Hence why they starve and also why they don't look like friends even before trying to eat each other, as if they were stuck together
In it, it made sense. The 2 buzzards obviously are fake friends (aside frol the fact despair and hunger have them try to eat each other, they have no hesitation or regret and are happy to try to do so it's not tragic as it would be if they liked each other, and even before resorting to canibalism they obviously did not like to share abd fought and argued) and were most likely stuck together. Well the dream established they are in laws. The brown one, Joe, had a fling with Mama Buzzard (and making sense she is taller and buffier given she is a female bird of prey !) which resulted in her hatchlings among thel Beaky. She is kinda pissed that got her gravid since he is not a mate she selected for being well an actual mate, and sees Joe is a terrible hunter so doesn't want to include him in the family not to influence badly her "killers" given how much of a loser he is to her (and ironically Beaky is kinda like him) so he doesnt get to see his kids often
But at the same time she kicked him out, she kicked out her brother, the Jimmy Durante-like black feathered vulture, who was a parasite lying around ib her nest who was hypocritically criticizing him (as well as kind of protective glaring at him like "SO YOU GOT MY SISTER GRAVID...") and ecnouraging her to kick him away while he was just as useless as him in the nest life. So both found themselves alone together that way because she wants excellence and doesnt want to feed 2 adults or badly influence her more capable kids, hence why they are starving and trying to eat each other now. She didn't cut ties either, she tolerates them occasionnally
Well it was weird, like a HC I never made myself but my brain thought of while sleeping, and it was silly enough. Plus in that first dream logic, there was no explanation why her Jimmy Durante-like bro had an American accent and she an Eastern European one, so I figured cartoon logic since unlike him she is menacing and a capable huntress
BUT during my hiatus I had another dream taking place in that universe ! (Animaniacs have both Looney Tunes and Hanna Barbera in the same world. HB also has MGM cartoons. So they all make sense to be in the same universe !)
It is foggier, but I dinstinctly remember the 2 guys trying in vain to hunt, and the Durante one chilling with his sister in a nest a day they could tolerate each other and it seemed like for once Joe was with his kids. And that dream GAVE an explanation why the siblings have a different accent ! Both come from Eastern Europe and Durante-like buzzard just has a better ear than her and mimicked the way he heard the local accent. HOWEVER the dream established that despite him having a very very good level to the point you can think he is American, there is a few modern slang he takes literally. Cues him wanting to say that so far he and Joe are happy, so he says, chilling "yeah Joe and I are gay" and his sister SPITS OUT HER DRINK. She still sees from his face and knowing him something must be wrong so she holds in a laughter and begins trolling him and ask questions which out of context are hilarious and he doesnt even realize and anzwers with assurance... until the end he realizes "HEY" and she laughs her ass off
And only a few days later I HAD ANOTHER
And this one depicted Joe STILL into her and struggling between trying to survive, see his kids he wants to see as not very responsible as he is, and trying to awkwardly win her back despite how they never were more than a fling because he likes them tall and buff like her (and as much as she denies it and calls him everything she is not unsensitive about it), all under his in-law uncaring eye
It was weird how in one year I had THREE dreams of a same headcanon a dream had created and not my own conscious self, and developped it more than I would !
It used to be a side thought, now I really headcanon it XD

For the past few years I've been taking a deep dive into various alternative genres, especially shoegaze and emo.
I initially became interested in that spectrum of rock music in my late teens (circa 2007-09), when I suddenly became aware of the type of music I had been hearing in Hot Topic and Vans Shoes stores- the latter of which is still an association I make to this day. I had also been hearing pop punk like Green Day and the recent wave of garage rock, especially since I had become a White Stripes fan a few years prior.
This stuff was very different from the classic rock I had grown up listening to on the car radio- the likes of Led Zeppelin, The Who, Boston, Queen, and Journey, as well as occasional prog tunes by Yes and Rush. (Full disclosure: 1960s and 1970s rock and pop is still my favorite kind of music, but I like to broaden my horizons.) I'm not entirely sure when and where I had first encountered alt rock- I had heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and Weird Al's "Angry White Boy Polka", but other than that, all I can figure is that it was just... around. I couldn't tell you exactly what drew me to it in the first place, either. Maybe it was just different from the blond divas and boy bands everyone else my age was listening to.
I get the impression that people my age (and skin color) are expected to have already gone through a depressed, whiny thirteen-year-old phase of blasting My Chemical Romance and Jimmy Eats World in their bedroom, but that never happened to me. It's not that middle school wasn't harrowing and traumatizing, but rebelling against my parents was never an option, because I always thought they were pretty cool. I was actually listening to *more* classic rock in middle school, as well as 1950s rock 'n' roll. In hindsight, I was probably hopped up on adrenaline rather than moping. (My angsty, dark period was 18-20, and I'm not entirely sure why.)
When I did initially dip my toe into alternative, it was alongside my discovery of Christian extreme metal bands, and great many other genres, which kept me pretty busy. So it wasn't until about four years ago (once streaming music was firmly established) that I decided to really sit down and listen to these 1990s bands that lots of people keep saying are great and "defined my generation", so I feel like I'm catching up on all of it.
This was kinda the culmination of that period of my life when my guitar amp was broken and I could only play unplugged (before I discovered amp sims). I couldn't rely on merely crunching power chords and wailing minor pentatonic scales whilst masking my lack of ability and talent by cranking the gain and the EQ all the way up to ten the whole time. I had to keep from getting bored by fooling around with weird scales, modes, and strange harmonies. I think that's one of the big reasons I like emo and shoegaze in particular, 'cause those genres tend to employ interesting, colorful chords (although the music theory and power pop sides of my brain tend to cause an internal conflict of wanting more satisfying, unambiguous cadences). Just like the rock groups of three decades ago, I had grown weary of simply playing blues licks. It's almost like history repeating itself.
But something that's perhaps more meaningful is the vocal style. I find myself refreshed by the unembellished, unintimidating singing. I was never a fan of the big, over-the-top singers in pop, r&b, or even the types who sing sappy ballads like "Alfie" or "Hallelujah", with their perfect technique, dynamic breath control, and so-called expressiveness. They always screw with the melody, sing offbeat, ignore the backing band, and leave me feeling empty and emotionless. The way singers in grunge, Midwest emo, metalcore, slowcore, etc. express weariness, anxiety, quiet contemplation, self reflection, rage, sleepiness, ennui, self-doubt, or what have you unlike any musical movement before it is incredibly inspiring, and makes me feel like I don't always have to blast the eardrums of the people sitting in the back seats of the auditorium to convey the meaning of the words. I've discovered that not all emotions in rock music have to be extreme. This is especially true now that I'm an adult and I feel the urge to slow down and mellow out, probably due to waning adrenaline levels, and I rely less on loud, fast, energetic music to keep my spirits up.
That said, I still wind up defaulting back to 1960s and 1970s music after an album or two. So I still seek to strike a balance between the two.
(I suppose by now you might be wondering what my favorite bands under the alternative umbrella are. Well, so far I've been most impressed by Nirvana, Weezer, Pavement, Sunny Day Real Estate, Cursive, Snowing, Algernon Cadwallader, Bedhead, Duster, My Bloody Valentine, Lush, Slowdive, and Ringo Deathstarr.)

Doctor Who and Fallout (The Show) which i haven’t seen (don’t have Amazon) but it fits and I wanna hear your thoughts (and I love Kyle MacLaughlin and Matt Berry)
Omg yayy! :) Ok ok (this is a long post)
Doctor Who!!
My favourite female character: Ik this is super surprising and will shock absolutely everyone but I actually love Rose Tyler sooo much!!
For real though she is my favourite character of any media ever, to me she is joy and compassion and bravery and all things good. I adore her <3
My favourite male character: The Ninth Doctor! I’ve already said how much he means to me many times but he makes me feel so safe I love him :)
My favourite book/season/etc: Series 1 is my go to comfort series but series 10 is a close second it’s so good and I love Bill Potts!!!
My favourite episode (if it’s a tv show): Rose! It is the one I rewatch the most <3 but other favs are Boom Town, The Long Game, School Reunion, The Beast Below and The Pilot :)
My favourite cast member: Don’t make me choose between Billie Piper and Christopher Eccleston I will explode into one billion pieces
My favourite ship: Doctor x Rose <3<3 (NineRose and ThirteenRose especially!)
A character l'd die defending: 😬 <- me holding myself back from saying words when someone says they think Rose is annoying (happens way too often irl) also I will defend Thirteen til my dying day!
A character I just can't sympathize with: Idk I can’t think of anyone other than the obvious villains so I’ll just say the “eat my salad” guy from The Woman Who Fell To Earth what was his deal
A character I grew to love: River. I don’t know that I love her but I’ve grown to appreciate the tragedy of her arc especially on my latest rewatch and Alex Kingston is so fun in that role
My anti otp: I don’t really have opinions on ships outside of DoctorRose so idk? Fuck Jimmy Stone I guess.
Fallout!! I will be more vague so as not to spoil it for you :)
My favourite female character: Lucy ofc!! She’s such a great protagonist and she reminds me a lot of my Sole Survivor :)
My favourite male character: I’m gonna be honest I was mainly focused on Lucy but I also liked Wilzig!
My favourite episode: Ep 1 (The End) solely for the opening scene. Genuinely incredible television, it completely took my breath away and I knew from the moment I saw it the show would be brilliant!
My favourite cast member: Ella Purnell!! From the interviews I’ve watched with her she’s so sweet and funny and also she is so gorgeous omg
My favourite ship: I don’t really have one? Lucy and Maximus are cute ig. Lucy x Myself tbh <3
A character I’d die defending: I haven’t really seen much discourse so I’ll just say I would die for CX404/Dogmeat
A character I just can’t sympathize with: Aside from obvious baddies I don’t really have one. I don’t like the Brotherhood but I like Maximus so I hope he gets outta there
A character I grew to love: The Ghoul! I was not immediately enamoured by him from the first images we got like so many people were but he is a really great character and I’m probably most excited to see more of his story in season 2! I love that they use him to show us more of the pre-war world.
My anti otp: I know so many people like them together but I really don’t like Lucy x The Ghoul I’m sorry!!! I think Ella and Walton have great chemistry and their dynamic is very compelling but the idea of them being a couple squicks me out after everything he does to her :(
