The main thing I wish were in the movie of the Princess Bride is the Zoo of Death
But the other thing, the thing y'all who've only seen the movie would flip over, is how young Billy's father (it's not his grandfather) is portrayed in his memory as a semi-literate working class immigrant. Reading this long-ass book and judiciously editing it on the fly to only share the "good parts" is an extreme labor of love.
Like, there's something you can do for this person you love who is suffering. And you are pretty sure it will ease their pain, but it's a STRUGGLE. And you do it every day, after a long fucking day of working as a barber. And it fucking works, this person you love latches onto what you're doing and comes out the other side a changed person.
I always say William Goldman writes the best suspense scenes of anyone but he writes so many kinds of love beautifully, too.

Grishaverse 🌌✨
The Grishaverse, created by the brilliant mind of Leigh Bardugo, is a captivating literary universe that enchants readers with its intricate blend of magic, adventure, and diverse characters. Spanning multiple novels, short stories, and now even a television adaptation, the Grishaverse has become a beloved realm for fantasy enthusiasts worldwide. Let's embark on a journey through this wondrous realm and unravel its many wonders. 📖
At the heart of the Grishaverse lies the Ravkan Empire, a land divided by social hierarchy and political intrigue. Here, Grisha, individuals with the ability to manipulate elements through Small Science, hold both power and fear. From summoning fire to controlling the winds, Grisha possess extraordinary abilities that shape the fate of nations. Among them, the protagonist Alina Starkov rises from obscurity to become a beacon of hope in the face of darkness, as depicted in the "Shadow and Bone" trilogy. 🏰🔥
But the Grishaverse extends far beyond the borders of Ravka. In the Six of Crows duology, Bardugo expands her universe to the bustling city of Ketterdam, a hub of crime and commerce. Here, a diverse cast of characters, including the cunning Kaz Brekker, the mysterious Nina Zenik, and the sharp-witted Jesper Fahey, navigate a world of heists, betrayals, and unexpected alliances. Through their eyes, readers explore themes of friendship, redemption, and the complexities of human nature. 🏙️💰
One of the most compelling aspects of the Grishaverse is its rich tapestry of cultures and identities. From the vibrant Suli nomads to the enigmatic Fjerdans, Bardugo populates her world with a diverse array of peoples, each with their own customs, languages, and beliefs. This commitment to representation not only adds depth to the narrative but also resonates with readers from all walks of life. 🌍👥
Moreover, the Grishaverse serves as a platform for exploring complex themes such as power, privilege, and prejudice. Through the struggles of characters like Alina and Nikolai Lantsov, Bardugo examines the corrupting influence of power and the sacrifices required to wield it responsibly. Meanwhile, the discrimination faced by Grisha in Ravka mirrors real-world issues of marginalization and oppression, inviting readers to reflect on their own societies. 💪🏽🤝
In addition to its thought-provoking themes, the Grishaverse captivates audiences with its lush imagery and evocative prose. Bardugo's vivid descriptions transport readers to snow-capped mountains, bustling markets, and shadowy alleyways, immersing them in a world brimming with magic and wonder. Whether it's the grandeur of the Little Palace or the grittiness of the Barrel, every corner of the Grishaverse is teeming with life and possibility. 🏞️✨
As the Grishaverse continues to expand with new novels, spin-offs, and adaptations, its allure shows no signs of waning. With each new installment, Bardugo invites readers to delve deeper into this fantastical realm, uncovering its secrets and unraveling its mysteries. Whether you're a fan of epic quests, intricate plots, or diverse representation, there's something for everyone in the enchanting world of the Grishaverse. 🌟📚
In conclusion, the Grishaverse stands as a shining example of the power of storytelling to transport, inspire, and unite readers around the world. With its compelling characters, richly imagined world, and thought-provoking themes, it continues to capture the hearts and imaginations of audiences everywhere. So, grab your kefta and your crow's cloak, and join us on an unforgettable journey through the enchanting realms of the Grishaverse! 🚪🔮

A Year in (Book) Review: My 2024 Reading Journey 📚
Tumblr media
#43 - The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill
Fantasy / 400 pages / published in 2016 / Finished May 13
One Sentence Review: One of my all-time favorite novels, this book is pure joy, heartache, and beauty - from the setting to the characters to the elaborate world-building to the storytelling itself, The Girl Who Drank the Moon is a story about love, and loss, and what forgetting, willful ignorance, and complacency can do to people, but also what love - a mother's love, a grandmother's love, a father's love, and even a dragon's love and a swamp monster's love - can do even more.
Favorite Quotes
"'I was taken from my mother,' Luna explained. 'Like you, I was brought to a family who loved me and whom I love. I cannot stop loving that family, and I don't want to. I can only allow my love to increase.' She smiled. 'I love the grandmother who raised me. I love the mother I lost. My love is boundless. My heart is infinite. And my joy expands and expands. You'll see.'"
*
"'Caw,' said the crow. 'I am the most excellent of crows,' the crow meant."
*
"'It's all right,' she said. Her throat hurt. Her chest hurt. Love hurt. So why was she happy? 'The world is good. Go see it.'"
*
"How many feelings can one heart hold? She looked at her grandmother. At her mother. At the man protecting his family. Infinite, Luna thought. The way the universe is infinite. It is light and dark and endless motion; it is space and time, and space within space, and time within time. And she knew: there is no limit to what the heart can carry."
*
"The heart is built of starlight / And time. / A pinprick of longing lost in the dark. / An unbroken chord linking the Infinite to the Infinite. / My heart wishes upon your heart and the wish is granted. / Meanwhile the world spins. / Meanwhile the universe expands. / the mystery of love reveals itself, again and again, in the mystery of you."
My rating: 5/5
A Few More Thoughts (Spoilers):
This is one of my favorite books ever written. Barnhill is a master storyteller, and this book not only has endless charm, a cast of wonderful characters, and a deep and beautiful meaning, but also the writing itself is a work of art.
Every time I read this book (I believe this was #3), I find myself awestruck by how perfectly everything fits together in the end, as well as the heart-wrenchingly bittersweet ending and the achingly deep and familiar message that forgetting or pretending all is well will not deny or delay death or change - acceptance, even of the hard things, is the only way to move on, to have any kind of peace.
I have taken so many things from this book and treasure each one closely. That turning our pain inward and refusing to move on is not only dangerous to us, but makes us dangerous to others, that family is who you choose, that love is not finite but boundless, that acceptance is the only true path to peace and growth.

"pie in a bed of raw onions. human skull looking put upon." is still one of the silliest, most apt descriptions i've ever run across.
it's up there with "You speak pants?" except it's in a published work so it isn't just us DCA lovelies who know about it XD
Hecking Miyazaki knows the pie line.
