Pride VT's theme this year is Ruby Anniversary, so my first thought was to go back to this commission from last winter as a starting point for a showpiece.

Have y'all read Hell Followed With Us? You should. It's the transmasc exvangelical apocalyptic body horror I didn't know I needed, after last year's whole, getting my body taken over by deeply gendered forces I didn't understand and couldn't control, thing.

Maybe the concept is a little more bloody than bejeweled, but I bet I could do something fun with the reds and glittery silvery whites I still have left. Rubies as eyes. Eyes as jewels. Maybe the wings will be completely made of eyes this time.

Just read hell followed with us, and the spirit bares it's teeth and omg, they are so good. If you haven't read these books (warning for intense gore)

These books changed my life, no joke. They got me into reading. They got me into books. I used to hate reading. I despised it. These books have changed my views. Now I read for fun before. But I was slow and tedious. I finished hell followed with us in a week and two weeks for the spirit bares its teeth. These are both 5 star books.

Review: (MILD SPOILERS)

This was honestly a really good time even if you're not a huge fan of extensive blood, gore, and body horror. I tend to not mind dystopian novels, even though they can really stress me out because I start to overthink every single action that occurs, but if you really just go into with the idea that this is a character driven story, it'll be a bit easier.

Conceptually, this is a well thought out tale that follows Benji through a rather fucked up healing process of overcoming multiple areas of trauma. Granted some were kind of dope as fuck. I really enjoyed the monster aspect of it all because it felt like it wasn't only trying to come off as symbolic, but also nostalgic, at least for me. It felt very mid-2000's thriller/horror video games!

We don't spend a whole tone of time within the setting, as it is a character centric story, but we do focus on the world building details. This book is HEAVY with its religious themes and I am no expert to say if they are accurate or not, however, it felt as though the author was reliving/healing themselves as they explored these aspects of conservative Christianity. It didn't read preach-y. It read as like an active commentary against the persecutions the queer & LGTBQAI+ face even in today's day in age.

Super fucked up, but I enjoyed it!

Honestly, I thought that the greatest challenge in The Spirit Bares its Teeth would be the C-section scene but guess which chapter was the fastest and easiest to translate?

And I have to emphasize how I hate all surgical procedures in practice (but at least thanks to this I ran into an animation of how hysterectomy is done which is the funniest shit bc I should've looked it up before going through it... Better late than never?)
