Hey all, know I've been quiet but I'm in the home stretch!! Just gotta survive three more days and then exams are over, pray for me 🙏

Anyway in honor of me spending my weekend fighting for my life trying to memorize formulas that look like alphabet soup:

Heartsteel helping you study headcanons

Kayn

- Let's be real he ain't helping. Like he understands this is important and you need to focus but he also really, really wants your attention, are you sure it's not time for you to take a break? No? :(

- Like you'll be taking notes and you'll just see him in the background slowly vibrating out of his skin restraining himself from bothering you. But also, he ain't gonna leave unless you ask him to, he'd still rather hang out with you ignoring him than not spend time with you.

- Let him quiz you or something, please he'll do such a good job just pleeeease pay attention to him. Or just talk him about whatever it is you're working on, he'll do his best to follow along but really it doesn't matter if he doesn't understand, if having someone to bounce ideas off of helps you then he's absolutely there for that.

- Largely mollified if you work while sitting on his lap. He'll do his best not to be distracting, he promises. That being said, if you try to work one minute past when you said you were gonna stop your laptop is getting ejected and he will be pouncing on you, he's been so patient goddamnit.

Aphelios

- Will actually help you study. He's pretty well read so there's a few subjects he can help you with, otherwise he just sits next to you and keeps you on track. There will be no getting distracted by your phone on his watch, and you will be taking regular breaks. Mostly he's doing his own thing so he doesn't bother you, like mixing tracks with his headphones on, but trust me he Will notice if you start slacking off.

- Honestly he's the kind of guy who appreciates just spending time in the same space as you

- Recruits Alune to retrieve snacks. She's also very willing to help if it's a subject she's familiar with, but she's also very talkative with people she likes so Phel will shoo her away if she's distracting you.

- If he can, will help organize your notes or put together flash cards. Great at quizzing you, though he also tends to ask insane niche question that really tests your understanding.

Sett

- The only reason he had decent grades in high school was because he didn't want to upset his mom, so he knuckled down and worked his ass off. He sucks at studying otherwise, he never had the patience for it, so he really respects your determination

- If you tell him you're gonna work and then end up on your phone he Will notice. He knows all the tricks in the book, he used them himself, you are not gonna start after just one more video, you're gonna start now. He's pretty hard to argue with when he's got his Boss voice on.

- That being said, he ain't gonna be much help with academics–even the stuff he's great at, like songwriting, he doesn't really consciously think about; he just has an intuitive sense of what does and doesn't work, and goes purely off of what feels right.

- Any other support he can offer though, he's There. You want snacks? A quiet spot to study? Coffee on the hour every hour? He's got you, ask and you shall receive.

- He's drawing the line if you start going overboard though, working tired is worse than not working at all so you're gonna call it for the night and come back when you're back on your game.

Yone

- Another man who's likely to actually know the subject you're studying. He'll sit down with you and help you make a study plan, and then he'll make sure you actually stick to it. A firm yet gentle hand–he’s used to dealing with that lot, keeping you on track is easy mode comparatively. Also, he'll find a way to minimize potential distractions so sneakily you won't even notice, like you get the urge to go on your socials but your phone's somehow all the way over on the couch so it's too much effort.

- Offers to let you study at his place. It's a very quiet and relaxing space, and also he point blank bans any of the other band members from bothering either of you while you're working.

- You thought that thing about herbal tea helping with concentration was an old wives tale but whatever is in this little clay cup is legitimately a god send. He also makes his own wagashi, and it's so pretty you'd almost feel bad about eating it if it didn't taste so good.

- Helps you with flashcards and quizzes and anything else that will help you feel prepared. Will go out of his way to read up on the subject so he can help you better.

Ezreal

- This guy 100% has undiagnosed ADHD, I don't make the rules. Unlike Kayn who has some pretty obvious hyperactivity symptoms, Ez is one of those people whose like ‘nahhh I can't have that, I get on just fine when it's something I'm interested in :)) in fact I'm so good at studying things I'm interested in that I'll do it for hours at a time without taking breaks! :)) that's normal!’. So while he really wants to be helpful, he has horrible studying habits and honestly he's impressed you're starting before midnight the night before your test. If you need someone to keep an eye on your bad study habits, he is not the guy. If you need a quick confidence boost or moral support though, he's absolutely there for you.

- Extremely knowledgeable on a very specific and eclectic range of subjects. If you happen to by studying ancient history he will explode with excitement, babygirl he knows facts you couldn't even begin to be assessed on.

- He'll bring you your favorite snacks and drinks! Occasionally he'll start talking to you only to remember you're busy and cut himself off mid word–he doesn't mean to, it's just whenever he finds something interesting he immediately wants to share it with you.

- Second you say you're done he'll insist on doing something to celebrate, whatever gets your batteries recharged, whether that's going out and doing something fun or snuggling down and watching a movie, he thinks you deserve a reward.

K’Sante

- Actually very studious, he knows how to knuckle down and get something done. If you have trouble keeping on track he can help with that. Like he gets this gaggle of dumbasses to meet deadlines, he's pretty good at figuring out what motivates people

- His knowledge base is mostly music theory and visual design, but he'll help out if he can.

- He'll invite you to his place and make you lunch as a treat, which is very motivating because he is a fantastic cook. Plying you with food is also his way of maneuvering you into taking breaks when you need them.

- He can tell when you start slowing down and need to call it for the day, and gently extracts you from your work by suggesting you take a walk and stretch your legs or something.

Bonus

- Whole band is throwing you a party as soon as your exams are over, whether it's a celebration of your hard work or a ‘thank fuck it's over’ bash. There will be another party when you get your results back, they'll take any excuse for a party if it means you'll be there.

This could be songs, movie quotes, scenes, or anything from your own writing.

Attempt to pronounce these by looking at the writing.

He feels all of the guys outside lift a hand at once, though only one of them actually knocks on the door. Doesn’t bode great for them not being Clayface, he thinks. Or Hatter victims. Or something equally fucking horrifying.

Could always be a total unknown, of course. Could always be that. 

“Who’s there?” Pete calls, sounding oddly . . . grim, almost. Or maybe . . . wry? 

Some part of Kid expected him to say it jokingly, for some reason. Like a knock-knock joke, or . . . like he was mocking or teasing the problem, showing off sly humor and casual confidence. Not . . . 

Why did he expect that, he wonders? 

No–why did Superman expect that? 

Because it was definitely Superman’s memories that expected that. 

“Open up,” the man who knocked drones, which is notably not a response to what Pete said. All their bodies still feel too dense, but the knocker’s built a little different from the others. 

Meaning, his body has enough in the way of lungs to actually speak. 

Fuck, Kid thinks, tightening his hands into fists. 

He knows ASL because Superman has an eidetic memory and has been slowly but surely making his way through learning the basics of as many languages as he can, for crisis situations and the like. Or at least, he knew enough ASL to get by, and he’s taught himself a little more since then. Except it’s only enough to “get by” when there’s someone else around who knows it, and he doesn’t know how to relay anything about how wrong all these fucks’ bodies feel to a bunch of strangers who probably don’t know any sign at all. 

Though even if he did, he’s not sure he wants to play that card either. 

But if it might get the others hurt . . . 

Kid hesitates, then reaches out for Pete’s sleeve. Pete jerks his arm out of the way without looking, the reaction an obvious reflex, then stares blankly back at him over his shoulder. 

“This really the time, kid?” he asks. 

Kid . . . hesitates, then points at the door. Then he fingerspells n-o b-r-e-a-t-h-e, hoping maybe the guy at least knows the alphabet. He doesn’t want to get into the whole total lack of lungs and other vital organs issue, for obvious reasons. Nobody in the neighborhood would question him saying something like that, at this point, but he doesn’t know if Pete’s gonna listen to even this much. Assuming he’s even understanding him right now, anyway.

Pete . . . tilts his head. 

“Boss?” one of his guys says, eyeing the door warily. 

“Hm,” Pete says, then looks up at the window above the door. “Wait here.” 

“Wait for–” another one of his guys starts to ask, and Pete jumps up, grabs Lily’s abandoned perch, and pulls himself up onto it all in one swift motion. The move looks smooth and effortless, and Kid might even believe it was if Superman didn’t know damn well exactly how much effort it takes a human to move like that.

At least the unenhanced ones, anyway. 

Kid remembers how green Pete’s eyes are again, and just . . . wonders, a little. 

Pete peers through the window above the door, then grins. It’s a mean, merciless one. Not the one Superman’s memories expect. 

Kid doesn’t know quite what those memories do expect, though. Just that it’s something else. Something . . . different.

Bubba Sawyer

After a long day of chores and killing, Bubba was exhausted and ready to get out of the Texas heat. As he walks into the house, he sees you in the living room sitting on the couch observing an object, resting in your lap. 

You look up from the object and smile at him, patting the cushion next you: informing him to sit on the couch with you. As Bubba joins you on the couch, he notices the object is a book.

Bubba never knew how to read. His brothers never taught him, let alone, never let him go to school. He was always needed around the house and didn’t have time for education.  

He points to the book in your lap and squeals in his pig language. You’ve been with Bubba long enough to understand him. What you can make out from his squeals is that he wants you to teach him how to read??? Well, if that’s what you want Bubba that you can do! 

When you first start teaching him how to read, you teach him the alphabet. You can’t read words without knowing the alphabet. Bubba is a pretty fast learner; he has to be if he wants to keep up with the rest of his family. In a couple of days, he got the alphabet down to a science. 

Now that Bubba knows the alphabet, you teach him how to read simple words. You get a bunch of sheets of paper and cut them out into many small boxes. You put different words on the small papers: flash cards. You and Bubba practice with the flash cards every night after dinner. Overtime, Bubba came to know every word on every flash card. He could read! Somewhat. 

You bought him some picture books. You and him would sit on your shared bed every night, reading them. You would read each word slowly so Bubba could learn the pronunciation of the words. He’d babble each word after you would say them.

Once Bubba perfected the basic skills of reading, he starts reading small novels. Wait hold on! By himself?! Yes! You’ll catch him reading all sorts of stuff: mysteries, action, fantasy. You name it! He loves reading everything! 

Bubba has a huge imagination. He loves to pretend that he is one of the characters in the book. 

His favorite genres of books are definitely fantasy and romance. He likes how bubbly it makes him feel and he loves all the different mystical creatures. Unicorns are his favorite. He’ll always try and find a book that has a unicorn in it.

He loves to read to you and his brothers. You will all sit in the living room while Bubba babbles the words written on the pages in the book. He’ll mimic the characters actions and babble the different tones of the characters dialogues. It’s so cute and Bubba has a lot of fun doing it.

miscellaneous thoughts!

No update today :( but I have some miscellaneous thoughts bouncing around in my head, so here they are.

I rewatched the end of act 1 flash animation (p.246) and was hit for the first time with how terrifying this must be for John. I think on first watch I was scared from an external perspective (is he gonna be ok?) but wasn't in his head. This time I was in his head. John's life isn't good or happy right now but there's no indication that he's suffered violent or sudden trauma before. This is probably the single scariest event that's happened to John. His whole life was destroyed in less than five minutes. When I look at this with analytical brain it's so easy to forget that but... no wonder he hesitated. No wonder he was paralyzed with fear for a few seconds before taking that bite. It's such a trial by fire and so much responsibility to just throw at somebody who's been pretty sheltered and not at all prepared for this by their upbringing. I want to highlight this because I want to keep it in mind to understand his character going forward.

Back with the recent Rose update. I think the plastic letters on Rose's fridge are the secret to her modus. The command 'Captchalogue W' for an alphabetical modus really hit me, and the way everything auto-balanced could definitely be utilized, potentially even weaponized, by simply grabbing the right letters to push the necessary card to the root. This would be perfect for someone as wordy as she is, and it's a fun contrast to Dave - her alphabetical modus vs his numerical one.

With Rose's writing journals (p.220) she seemed to have some awareness of the Homestuck player watching her. Now that's gone, with no difference in command style, and I'm kind of mystified. Is it an occasional prickle at the back of her head that happens randomly? Is she more ashamed of her creative writing than of her silly behavior, and will we understand why if we ever get to peek in those journals? Is this location based - Rose is aware of being watched in her room but by leaving it, the threat of her mom looms so large in her mind that she forgets about the player?

Finally, something more serious. There have been a few instances of the r-slur in this comic already. Everyone gets one - John (p.154), Rose (p.249), Dave (p.333) and the narrator (p.387). I think this is realistic dialog for all these characters (but fwiw I do not think GG would say it). I also think that just because something is realistic doesn't make it ok to uncritically write. Anyone could be reading this who has had this word used against them, and could get hurt again by its being casually tossed around by characters who otherwise mean something to them.

Homestuck is a fairly popular webcomic, and making something on the internet - especially as a full time job - is kind of a legacy. People could read this thing 10 or 50 or 100 years in the future, and using language that, while normalized, is known to be offensive, could keep it in the lexicon and continue to normalize it in future. Maybe this is harsh. But it's everyone's responsibility to be a little kinder in how we talk about vulnerable people. And this is an example of somebody not doing that for the sake of teh jokez. I'm not gonna laugh at that or let it slide without saying something.

so anki is the love of my life, and i'd like to discuss it re language learning.

spaced repetition systems in general

SRSs are helpful tools to prevent memory loss for specific facts. there's some criticism behind the specifics, but it's pretty safe to say that it's good to have a huge flashcard deck with relevant flashcards where you review the new-to-you stuff with relative immediacy and your already-reviewed stuff with relative distance.

flashcard model recommendations

go for a monolingual deck!!! if you absolutely can't, edit the flashcard to monolingual after you're vaguely familiar with the word!!! (i use wordreference - it's good but imperfect)

edited to add - a TL/NL vocab deck can be very efficient if languages are from the same family

i use a picture for the front unless the vocab word is too high concept, and using a picture would just be misleading/ineffectual.

i use soundclips about half the time - i pull clips from wiktionary, forvo, & the collins dictionary.

i use the fill-in-the-blank feature (cloze) pretty heavily with antonyms, and if i'm trying to remember specific usages of common words/phrases

i also use the fill-in-the-blank feature for chunking, altho i use this fairly rarely

i recommend 25 new words daily, or anything that'll set you for your regular pomodoro time for studying vocab (which is 25 mins for me).

i'm not at an advanced level yet for language learning, but this format is recommended for higher levels!

i lowkey recommend including example sentences on the backside, re chunking, but the utility really can depend on the vocab word

limitations

some limitations are a bit obvious - the quality of your study is 100% down to the quality of the flashcard (e.g. accuracy, relevancy, does it need more explanation for you to understand it)

it's also a hell of a time-suck to create these decks. i study 25 new cards a day, which means i have to create about two hundred flashcards every week. i make this quicker by having an ongoing list of words to add to my deck, instead of trying to look up vocab lists or whatever in the moment. i also do the whole week at once because i do get into the rhythm of dictionary-picture-audio searching while watching tv or whatever.

there are some fun add-ons (like for deadlines), and some complicated customization within anki itself. i usually just google if i have a question - a ton of people use anki, so there are tutorials for almost anything you want to do.

fluent forever

if you're unfamiliar, the fluent forever guy wrote a book about language learning which really hinges on a specific model of flashcard. he has tons of tutorial videos on his website, but basically he incorporates the phonetic alphabet, Google Images, and other relevant info for a vocab word (and grammar) in a flash card.

i think his flashcards take an unrealistic/unproductive amount of time, with a bunch of useless filler. however, i do recommend doing a quick read-through of his model and reasoning, as he might speak to something that you're struggling with. (for example, i've never struggled significantly with pronunciation so i think the IPA stuff is 100% useless.)

here's an integration to create the fluent forever flashcards much much faster. i don't use it but i've seen it recommended before.

outside of language learning!

i've used anki to learn for my work certification, for english vocab words from books i'm reading, and for titles of paintings that i want to remember forever. i wouldn't recommend shared decks for language learning, but i emphatically recommend them for other subjects!

Unthinkable (how hard it is to call someone?)

Robert Kennedy x Ava Worthing (OC)

Synopsis: A phone number, from a girl he likes, but Bobby can't make the call. However, fate has a way of bringing people together, like at a wedding.

Trigger Warnings: obsessive thoughts and/or overthinking, otherwise none as far as I know

Winter, 1958 - Spring, 1959 

After that night in November, a thank you-card did turn up at Bobby’s apartment in Georgetown. With a telephone number. But he was hesitant. What was she aiming for with the number? Did she...was she... 

A million thoughts rolled around in Bobby’s head, even when he was in Teamster hearings, having back-and-forth's with Sam Giancana, Jimmy Hoffa or David Beck.  

Afterhours, he questioned the meaning of those 10 digits. 8913588122. Written in a sleek and refined cursive, that the pad of his pointer finger had traced over too many times.  

So, he didn’t call. For months. He told himself it was because he needed to focus on the Senate investigations and planning for Jack’s campaign in ‘60. That he didn’t have time to explore what it would be like to talk to someone with who it was easy. It had been easy with Ethel...but she wasn’t Ethel. Ava was blonde, shorter than him, but the similarities ended quite quickly. She was twelve years younger than him, still in college, and the sister of his friend. There were too many variables. His parents' approval, her growing bored of him. Not including the fact, he felt he didn’t deserve it (a possible relationship with a woman? He wasn’t quite sure what ‘it’ was, either), or that he was scared out of his mind. He was detail-oriented, and he had the capacity to overthink. 

How could one singular interaction (and a hand-written thank-you card) throw his whole world off balance? Bobby had no idea. But he knew he was going to see her again, call or no call. Alec was getting married in June and undoubtably Ava would be present at her brother’s wedding. Would she even remember their conversation in that staff kitchen, had she thought about him, had she waited for him to call her? The slightly obsessive nature of his thoughts annoyed him.

June 8th, 1959, Newport, RI. 

Under a large white tent in the back garden of the Worthing summer home in Newport, was where the wedding reception for Alec Worthing and the new Mrs. Alec Worthing (former-Vogue model, Lydia Kay). Bobby was one of Alec’s ushers. But after giving his best wishes to the very happy (and slightly frisky couple), Bobby’s pale blue eyes searched for another carrying the Worthing last name. First name beginning with the first letter of the alphabet. Ava. Ava, Ava, Ava...every time he repeated her name in his head it sounded fresh. Like the air after a rainstorm or newly mowed grass. Ava. A palindrome.  

He saw her, talking with some girls her age, fellow bridesmaids he guessed, by the way they were dressed. Her bridesmaid dress was a deep emerald green, with a full skirt and an off- the shoulder neckline. The slight bareness of her shoulders extenuated the curve of her neck. And her face, looking better in the sunlight than under artificial staff kitchen lights. Her hair was curved at the ends, shining like gold. Bobby swallowed as he tried to tear his eyes from her. 

Then they’re eyes met. For a single moment he saw a flash of disappointment in her eyes. Bobby couldn’t stand it, his eyes falling to the floor. He didn’t know how long he stared at a single blade of green grass. 

Her voice made him jump. “You didn’t call.” 

“I...I...um...” He stuttered, still not meeting her gaze. How could he stare down Jimmy Hoffa, but not a girl who he hadn’t called. He was a grown man, for God’s sake. 

“I thought I was being quite plain. And Alec told me that you liked people being direct with you.” 

Bobby’s Adam's apple bobbed slightly as he slowly met her grey eyes. His throat felt dry. 

Ava was still talking. “...maybe I just misread our interaction. My hand was hurting quite bit, but I thought you liked talking with me. Though maybe you just were pitying me.” 

Bobby found his voice again. “I... I do. Like you.” Damn, why was he reduced to a nervous schoolboy with her confronting words. He was 33 years old, a counsel for a Senate committee who spent his days in hearings with men more dangerous than this college graduate. And yet, he did feel guilty. “And I wasn’t pitying you. I genuinely enjoyed talking with you.”  

“So, what was stopping you from calling me these past seven months?” 

“I...” He didn’t want to answer. The truth would make him look pathetic and weak-willed. And a Kennedy was never either of those.  

“I know you’ve got the Teamster hearings, but you don’t have even the guts for one phone call to tell me you’re not interested? To tell me not to bother, that I was either too young or too forward. Rejection would have been easier than complete radio silence.” She sighed, running a quick hand through the ends of her hair, slightly mussing her hair up. “That’s all I wanted to say to you. Now that I’ve got it off my chest you can enjoy the party, and I won’t wait around for any sub-par explanations from you.”  

Turning on her heel to return to her friends, Bobby said. “I was scared.” His voice was small and meek, and Ava almost couldn’t hear it in the buzz of the reception. “The last time I liked a woman, she left me.”  

Ava froze. “Oh...” 

“Yes, so, um, I was stupidly scared that it would happen again, and I was foolish enough to think so after one conversation that history would repeat itself and I didn’t want to risk making a complete laughingstock of myself. So, I-” He spoke at a rapid and almost desperate pace, as if worried his time would run out to say what he meant. 

“So, you didn’t call.” She finished for him.  

“I didn’t call.” He nodded. “And I’ve regretted it, because I can’t get you out of my head. Or your number.” He chuckled sheepishly, hand rubbing the back of his neck. “I memorized it actually.” 

“For the phone call you weren’t going to make?” She said, a small...something pulling on her lips. 

He nodded, noticing her growing amused expression, mirroring it. “Yeah. Doesn’t make much sense, does it?” 

“No, but I’m not blameless. I should’ve made a more direct move-” 

“No, no, this is not your fault. You made a very *direct* move, and I was just...an idiot.” He looked down at the ground and then back up at her face. “Can you forgive me for that?” 

She waved him off. “Nothing to forgive, you told me your side of things and I understand better now.” She turned her head as she heard her sister-in-law call for her. “I should go, the bride’s demands must be met.” 

A look of disappointment faintly crossed his expression, showing best in his eyes with a silent “Must you?” passing to her.  

“Save me a dance?” She asked.  

“I’m not much of a dancer.” 

“Doesn’t matter. No one here is. Except maybe my parents or Lydia...” She shook her head. “I’m rambling, anyway, if you don’t want to-” 

“No, I do. I just don’t want to step on your toes.” 

“Don’t worry about that. Now, I’ll see you on the dance floor.” She said and went to help her new sister-in-law with whatever she needed. 

Bobby was struck in his spot, running over what just happened. She wasn’t mad at him, and he was going to dance with her later. How quickly the conversation had turned. 

Later...a picture of Bobby and Ava was taken while they danced inside the large white tent. The first picture of them together, but not the last.

Chapter 26: Onward!

Summary: Prowls first day of language school.

“Day three without food or water and the task is seemingly impossible. I’m not sure how much longer we can last out here like this.”

“Oh would you quit it with the voice over. We’ve barely started, we just had breakfast, and there’s water Everywhere.”

“This is my movie preview voice and it makes everything sound awesome, Blaster.” I spoke in a matter of fact tone.

“Great. Wonderful. Now are you going to help me teach Prowl or not?”

“Yes.”

“Then get off the floor and come up here.”

I looked up from my spot on the floor. Both Blaster and Prowl were watching me. Prowl was looking rather confused and Blaster was looking at me like I was an idiot. I stood and began my climb.

“With one final push-”

“Stop. I swear I will slap you.”

“It’s fun. Ya should try it.”

“No thank you. Ok so lets get started before Prowl decides that we aren’t worth this.”

“I was just having some fun before we got down to being serious.”

“And Prowl might start thinking you’re going crazy or dying because you keep changing your voice.”

“Che. Prowl doesn’t care.”

“Really? To me it looked like he was looking at you like you were an idiot.”

“How do ya know what he was thinking?” I challenged.

“If he didn’t care he wouldn’t have looked at you in the first place.” Blaster answered without pause before going back to opening the little box we brought along.

We had brought along some flash cards, a notebook, a few pencils, and plenty of items that were common in the ocean. The page that had the alphabet on it was in a ziplock bag to protect it and folded to fit.

“Ok, Prowl. Lets get started.” I announced with a grin.

Prowl looked at the items curiously. First up was showing him the notebook and how the pencil worked via demonstration. Next was showing him the page with the alphabet. Through this simple step Prowl just simply watched us as per usual. Then I pulled out the seashell and set it before him. He turned it over as if looking for something before giving a confused expression. Like he was asking me what he was possibly supposed to do with it. I took it back and set it next to the notebook where Blaster wrote out the word seashell slowly for Prowl to watch.

“Seashell.” I smiled as I pointed to the word and then the shell.

And there was that look again. The one that plainly said that I was an idiot. I sighed dramatically before pointing out each individual letter on the protected sheet and the word on the notebook to show him where we got our little ‘symbols’ though he still didn’t lose that look. This was going to be harder than we thought.

Day by day we worked on trying to get him to understand while his neighbors still struggled for his attention. The day that he was to be brought into the merger tank was rapidly approaching. We were still working on getting him to understand just One word. Just the fact that we had our own language and that this was how we got words. How we wrote them and blah blah blah. But no he was looking at me like I was the one who didn’t understand.

“This isn’t that hard. Ok maybe it kinda is. Languages are hard, but you’d think ya would have one word down by now.” I sighed and Prowl hadn’t bothered to move.

“Things like this take time.”

“Yeah yeah yeah. I know. Ok lets take this from the top. Ya know what this is. This is a piece of coral, but this is how we spell it. C- O- R- A- L Coral.” I spoke out loud as I wrote each letter down. “So- hey! Don’t roll your eyes at me.”

“Jazz-”

“No. He rolled his eyes at me. Ya didn’t see it because he isn’t facing ya.”

“I don’t think he rolled his eyes at you. And if he did we have no clue if it means the same thing where he comes from.”

“Well he could have picked it up from being around us for so long. Hey hey hey! Where are ya going? We’re not done here.”

Prowl ignored me and slipped off the stand and into the water.

“Well. I think you offended him.”

“Me? He’s the one who rolled his eyes at me and has been looking at me like I don’t have a brain since we started this. If anything I am the one who should be offended.”

Our little argument was cut off when Prowl returned with a larger piece of coral. He settled back across Blasters lap and started scratching at it.

“What are ya doing now?”

All I got was a slight growl before he went back to scratching at it. When he was done he showed it to me. There were three little symbols scratched into it. He then pointed to the symbols and then to the coral before crossing his arms. One looked like a lowercase A with a circle in it. The next was two matching squiggles that looked like waves and the third looked like a two intersecting triangles. We both took a second.

“Oh… my…” Then Blaster burst out laughing.

“What?!”

“He thinks you’re a moron.”

“Oh shut up.”

Well in a way this was progress. Also this was solid proof if there was any that they did have a written language. If only we could get him to understand. So far all he was doing was acting like I was the one who wasn’t getting it. Blaster was absolutely no help. All he was doing was laughing at me and when I made to smack him Prowl growled at me. Why couldn’t things ever go my way? Also getting him to stop looking at me like I was an idiot would be great too.
